Nothing ruins a beautiful internet story quite like finding out the “concerned neighbor” telling it was actually the guy’s daughter wearing a fake identity like a cheap pair of Groucho glasses.
Today’s comedy podcast kicks off with the wild story of an 81-year-old Texas luggage driver who was reportedly working grueling hours while his wife battled cancer. The internet rallied around him, a GoFundMe exploded to roughly $745,000…and then the whole thing got shut down and refunded after GoFundMe discovered the woman claiming to be a caring local neighbor was actually the couple’s daughter.
Cool. Cool cool cool.
The underlying family hardship was reportedly real, but the fake identity wasn’t — which launches Riz, Lern and Moon into the bigger question: does one giant internet lie destroy an otherwise legitimate cause? We also get into the sketchier side of online fundraising, how scammers can target vulnerable people, why the show tries to vet fundraisers before sharing them, and the very important distinction between “I genuinely need help” and “Hey guys, can the entire city buy me some tires?”
From there, we do what any responsible morning show would do and immediately start arguing about Back to the Future.
The trilogy has somehow survived decades without Hollywood rebooting it into seventeen streaming series, three prequels and a gritty Doc Brown origin story. But Moon has a problem with Back to the Future Part II: old Biff, the sports almanac and an alternate-timeline paradox that he believes breaks the movie’s own rules.
Riz responds with the scientific precision of a Nobel laureate: wormholes.
Case closed.
We also discover — or rediscover — the largely forgotten Back to the Future animated series, where Marty McFly gets shoved aside so Doc Brown’s kids Jules and Verne can carry a Saturday morning cartoon. Because apparently somebody looked at one of the most beloved movie trilogies ever made and said, “Yeah, but what if we focused on the kids?”
Then Pat Smear commits the shocking act of…smoking a cigarette.
At a rock awards show.
The horror.
After Pat lights up onstage during the Nirvana Video Vanguard Award segment at the VMAs, people online apparently have feelings about it. The crew has feelings about people having feelings about it. Along the way we learn Pat Smear’s real name, admire his ability to still look cool at 67 and conclude that a guy who played in the Germs, Nirvana and Foo Fighters probably isn’t sitting backstage wondering whether Twitter approves of his decisions.
This comedy podcast also takes a trip back through September 29th in history, including the debut of MacGyver, the Breaking Bad finale and one absolutely ridiculous day in 1992 when Alice in Chains released Dirt and Stone Temple Pilots released Core. Kids, there used to be a thing called “albums,” and apparently we were spoiled rotten.
Then Lern brings the Crap on Celebrities.
Rod Stewart announces a final rock tour, Oasis heads to streaming with a reunion documentary, John Mayer prepares a multi-format Sphere residency, Miley Cyrus lands back atop the charts, and we briefly discover how aggravating band names become when nobody knows how the hell they’re supposed to be pronounced.
Nick Cannon is also bringing cameras into the circus that is raising 12 children with six different women, which naturally leaves everyone wondering when this man sleeps considering he also appears to have approximately 46 jobs.
Plus, Tom Cruise randomly makes one worker’s day, we remember Saved by the Bell’s Mr. Belding, debate some supposedly overrated movies, celebrate celebrity birthdays and once again prove that nostalgia is basically the gasoline keeping this entire show running.
It’s scams, movies, rock stars, celebrities, questionable logic and grown adults arguing about fictional time-travel mechanics.
In other words, another perfectly normal comedy podcast from The Rizzuto Show.
