À PROPOS DE CET ÉPISODE
Chapters 1–4: Jonathan Harker travels through Transylvania, arrives at Castle Dracula, meets the Count, and slowly realizes that he is trapped in a terrifying supernatural prison.
In Chapters 1–4 of Dracula, Jonathan Harker records his journey from the modern West into the unfamiliar landscape of Transylvania. Along the way, local people react with fear when they learn he is going to Castle Dracula, giving him warnings, protective charms, and signs that something is deeply wrong. At first, Jonathan tries to explain everything rationally, but the atmosphere of superstition, strange language, wild mountains, and midnight travel builds Gothic suspense.
At Castle Dracula, Jonathan meets the Count: polite, intelligent, aristocratic, and deeply unsettling. The Count has no servants, moves strangely, casts no reflection, and seems to control wolves. Jonathan soon realizes that the castle is locked and that he is not free to leave. As he explores, he encounters three mysterious vampire women and discovers Dracula’s plans to travel to England. By the end of this section, Jonathan understands that he is in deadly danger.
This episode summarizes and analyzes Chapters 1–4, focusing on Jonathan’s journal, the East/West contrast, Castle Dracula as a Gothic prison, the first signs of vampirism, and the way Bram Stoker mixes travel writing, folklore, and horror.
