À PROPOS DE CET ÉPISODE
Chapters 9–12: Lucy’s mysterious illness worsens, Van Helsing is called in, repeated blood transfusions fail to save her, and the struggle against Dracula becomes more urgent and tragic.
In Chapters 9–12 of Dracula, Lucy’s condition becomes increasingly alarming. Dr. Seward cannot explain her weakness, blood loss, strange marks, and nighttime decline, so he asks his former teacher Professor Van Helsing for help. Van Helsing recognizes that something beyond ordinary medicine is at work, but he does not immediately explain everything to the others. He orders garlic flowers, watches Lucy carefully, and begins combining modern medical methods with old protective practices.
The men repeatedly give blood transfusions to save Lucy: Arthur, Seward, Van Helsing, and Quincey all become symbolically connected to her through blood. But Dracula continues to attack. A wolf breaks into the Westenra home, Lucy’s mother dies from shock, the protective garlic is removed, and Lucy is left vulnerable. By the end of this section, Lucy dies, though Van Helsing’s behavior suggests that death may not be the end of her story.
This episode summarizes and analyzes Chapters 9–12, focusing on Lucy’s illness, the limits of modern medicine, Van Helsing’s arrival, blood as a symbol, gender and protection, and the growing horror of a vampire threat that the characters still do not fully understand.
