The Native Explanation

Uintah Basin High Strangeness is best enjoyed with headphones.

Not every story about the Uintah Basin comes from science labs or newspaper headlines. Long before Skinwalker Ranch, the Ute, Shoshone, and other Native peoples carried their own accounts of strange lights, star beings, and places to avoid. In this episode, Don Mitchell and Larry Cesspooch share their perspectives—walking among petroglyphs, recounting personal encounters, and explaining why some things aren’t meant to be measured, only respected. Through their stories, the Basin’s mysteries are reframed as something older, rooted in memory, ceremony, and tradition.

🪨 Petroglyphs & Writings – Don Mitchell describes sacred rock carvings as burial markers, warnings, and stories from the old ones.
🌊 The Thruway – Don explains the river corridor as a pathway not just for people, but for other things.
🌌 Star People & Sky Doors – Ancient traditions describe lights and beings in the sky long before “UFO” became a term.
🎵 The Song & The Prayer – Don’s blessing and Sundance song remind us that some stories are carried in ceremony, not books.
🌾 The Orb by the River – Larry Cesspooch recalls a childhood encounter with a light that chased him and his friends in Fort Duchesne.
🌬️ What Stays With You – Larry explains how cedar is used to cleanse spiritual “residue” after an encounter.
🌀 The Medicine Wheel & The Gate – Larry recounts Native use of a natural medicine wheel near the ranch and offers his perspective on Skinwalker’s cultural appropriation.
✨ The Old Knowing – Respect, intent, and memory shape how the Basin’s strangeness is understood in Native tradition.
