ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Nicole explores how schools can transform mathematics instruction by prioritizing discussion, conceptual understanding, and productive struggle over speed and memorization. She shares why professional learning for teachers is just as important as student learning, discusses the role of project-based learning, and explains how slowing down to encourage critical thinking ultimately leads to deeper understanding and greater student confidence.
The conversation also examines the growing impact of artificial intelligence in education. Rather than fearing AI, Nicole argues that educators should embrace it as a tool while continuing to value reasoning, communication, and human thinking. She explains why students must learn to evaluate answers, explain their reasoning, and connect mathematics to the real world--skills that technology alone cannot replace.
