Packers Total Access: Packers vs. Lions: Zaire Franklin Injury Scare & Josh Jacobs Practice Look!
Two storylines are driving the Packers’ week before Sunday’s 4:25 p.m. ET game at Ford Field. Linebacker Zaire Franklin, the defensive captain and play-caller, has been ruled out with a shin injury after taking a knee in a collision at Thursday’s practice. LaFleur said “I don’t think it’s going to be anything too long-term,” and the team does not expect to put him on injured reserve. The other storyline is running back Josh Jacobs, who got a light walkthrough Wednesday and a full practice Thursday, and LaFleur said Friday he is on track to play as long as he gets through the day and keeps trending in the right direction. The Packers are 4-2 and have won three straight, and they face a Lions team that ranks second in the NFL in scoring and fourth in total offense.
In this complete injury update and Lions preview, we dive into:
- The Franklin Injury: Franklin is the Packers’ second-leading tackler and has been the green-dot signal-caller for Gannon’s defense in his first year in Green Bay. Sunday will be only the second game he has missed in nine NFL seasons, ending a streak of 48 straight games played. Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper, and Nick Niemann are the linebackers LaFleur said he has confidence in.
- Linebackers Without Cooper Or Franklin: Edgerrin Cooper has been on injured reserve since his Achilles tear in Week 4, so Green Bay now faces Jahmyr Gibbs without either starting inside linebacker. The question is who relays the defensive calls and keeps Gannon’s disguises intact against a Lions offense that makes you tackle in space.
- Josh Jacobs’ Practice Week: LaFleur said Jacobs is in “a pretty good spot,” has stayed engaged in meetings and lifting, and has been training, but “missed the exposure to football.” Packers running backs have not scored a rushing touchdown this season, and Green Bay ranks last in the NFL in rushing at 59.8 yards per game. If he plays, expect the Packers to ease him back in with Lloyd, Johnson, and Strong still part of the rotation.
- The NFL Investigation Is Still Open: Ian Rapoport reported the NFL plans to interview Jacobs before making a disciplinary ruling. A suspension is still possible, and the six games he missed would count toward it. The Packers are treating this as a week-by-week decision.
- Lions Preview: Detroit’s Brian Branch (Achilles) and center Cade Mays (wrist) are listed as questionable. Jahmyr Gibbs is the key matchup for a defense missing both starting inside linebackers. Gannon’s blitz and disguise rates will be put to the test against one of the NFL’s best offenses.
