Packers Total Access: 🔥 Green Bay's SECRET WEAPON While Micah Parsons Heals Up? Gannon Has A DAWG!
The national media is writing the Green Bay Packers' pass rush off before a single training camp padded practice has been played — and they are completely sleeping on the most dangerous secret weapon Jonathan Gannon has hiding in plain sight at 1265 Lombardi Avenue heading into the high-stakes 2026 NFL season! Brenton Cox Jr. had four sacks in a six-game stretch after Preston Smith was traded in 2024 — becoming the first player in Packers history since 1982 to play in seven or fewer games and register four-plus sacks in a single season — and after missing most of 2025 with a groin injury, Cox is healthy, hungry, and back with a vengeance that the rest of the NFC North is not ready for. At mandatory minicamp, Cox was getting consistent work with the No. 1 defensive unit, and when healthy, has repeatedly shown the kind of violent quarterback disruption ability that gives Jonathan Gannon's new hybrid system an immediate edge rusher it can count on while Micah Parsons completes his ACL recovery. Of the entire edge rush group competing for snaps in Parsons' absence, Cox was the most productive by a solid margin throughout the entire spring program — and we are about to make the case that Gannon's DAWG is about to have the breakout season Packers Nation has been waiting for. NFL + 2
In this complete Brenton Cox Jr. secret weapon breakdown and Packers pass-rush evaluation, we dive into:
- The Cox Résumé Nobody Is Talking About: Cox became the first player in Packers history since 1982 to register four-plus sacks in seven or fewer games, adding seven QB hits and 13 Next Gen Stat pressures in that dominant 2024 stretch — numbers that prove when healthy, Cox isn't a depth piece, he's a legitimate difference-maker capable of completely taking over games in Jonathan Gannon's new pass-rush wave system. Heavy Sports
- Why A Healthy Cox Changes Everything: After missing most of 2025 with a groin injury, Cox enters 2026 fully healthy and in position to earn key snaps — with some of the pass-rushing packages during the offseason program already featuring Cox working directly with the No. 1 defensive unit opposite Lukas Van Ness in what amounts to a jaw-dropping early audition for the starting role across from Green Bay's established edge anchor. NFL
- Gannon's System Unlocks His Ceiling: With Rashan Gary and Kingsley Enagbare both gone from the roster, that duo combined with Parsons for 22 of Green Bay's 36 sacks and 56 of 106 quarterback hits last season — meaning the void is massive and Cox's opportunity to operate as a featured, high-snap rotational weapon in Gannon's new hybrid system is more wide open than at any point in his Green Bay Packers career. Green Bay Packers
- The Full Pass-Rush Picture: The projected post-minicamp edge depth chart behind Parsons currently features Van Ness as the primary starter, with Cox, Barryn Sorrell, Dani Dennis-Sutton, and Collin Oliver battling for rotational snaps — and with pads going on July 29 at Ray Nitschke Field, Cox's combination of NFL experience, proven production, and full health makes him the most complete and dangerous option in that entire group. - What A Cox Breakout Means For The Championship Window: If Brenton Cox Jr. delivers the dominant, healthy, full-season performance his 2024 film suggests he's fully capable of, Brian Gutekunst's decision to retain him instead of pursuing a splash free agent addition becomes one of the shrewdest moves of the entire "Gute Blueprint" — and Green Bay's pass rush without Micah Parsons becomes far less of a national concern and far more of a hidden championship-caliber weapon nobody in the NFC North saw coming.
