Note to All Listeners: Ghosting is defined as: The practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and without explanation withdrawing from all communication (Oxford Languages). When you leave an abusive situation without saying "goodbye," it's not ghosting, it's "self-protection." When you quietly exit a relationship after a boundary has been violated, it's not ghosting, it's "self-respect."

00:00:17.839 --> 00:00:29.679
Welcome to episode 100 of Coping with Ghosting, the podcast that provides hope, healing, and understanding for anyone who's been hurt, ghosted, or betrayed in relationships.
00:00:29.679 --> 00:00:37.359
If you're watching this on YouTube, just a quick heads up that my podcast hasn't always been on this platform.
00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:51.359
So if you want to catch up on the journey to 100, you can find the entire backlog of audio episodes on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever it is that you listen to your favorite shows.
00:00:51.359 --> 00:00:52.880
And thank you.
00:00:52.880 --> 00:01:00.399
Thank you for being here and for supporting my work and showing up here to take care of yourself.
00:01:00.399 --> 00:01:03.359
I'm so grateful for you.
00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:06.640
If you don't know me, I am Gretta.
00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:14.719
I'm a certified post-betrayal transformation coach and a sensitive soul who's been ghosted one too many times.
00:01:14.719 --> 00:01:23.920
And in today's episode, I'm going to share what to do if you think you're being ghosted in love, friendship, or family.
00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:32.000
And this is inspired by my upcoming book, Coping with Ghosting: The Ultimate Guide to Healing in Dating and in Love.
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:39.280
This episode is for you if you're in a ghosting gray area.
00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:45.439
Maybe you talk to the person you've been dating every single day, but they've been silent for 24 hours.
00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:56.000
Or maybe your bestie put a thumbs up emoji on the last text message that you sent, but then they never replied to you, and it's been like a whole entire week.
00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:04.079
If you're unclear whether you're being ghosted or not, I have strategies to help you relax and gain clarity.
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:13.919
But before I dive into the what to do, let's make sure that we're all on the same page about what being ghosted actually is.
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:30.159
I use the Oxford Dictionary's definition of the word, which is the practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and without explanation, withdrawing from all communication.
00:02:30.159 --> 00:02:38.479
A quick note if you're in an unsafe situation of any kind, suddenly withdrawing from it isn't ghosting, it's self-protection.
00:02:38.479 --> 00:02:45.599
And if a person is violating your communicated boundaries, exiting without a goodbye is an act of self-respect.
00:02:45.599 --> 00:02:58.639
When I first started coping with ghosting, I collaborated with certified mediator Aaron Fisher, and we created a copy and paste guide full of text messages to send to the person who's ghosting you.
00:02:58.639 --> 00:03:02.639
You can find this free on my website, copingwithghosting.com.
00:03:02.639 --> 00:03:04.719
I'll put a link for it in the show notes.
00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:08.960
And today's episode really expands upon this guide.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:17.360
And as you listen, just please keep in mind that you're the authority of your own life.
00:03:17.360 --> 00:03:28.319
Of course, I'm gonna have strong opinions about this subject, but I want you to customize your own ghost action plan based on how you feel.
00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:36.960
For example, if you're seriously concerned about the well-being of a person who's not getting back to you, you do what you need to do about it.
00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:45.039
However, be mindful to avoid intrusive activities such as showing up at their workplace to try to find them.
00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:53.439
If you're not sure what the most appropriate next step is, you can always join my free coping with ghosting Facebook group.
00:03:53.439 --> 00:03:55.919
We'd love to support you if you have a question.
00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:00.719
You could also schedule a private coaching session with me.
00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:03.280
I'd absolutely love to see you there.
00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:06.159
And so let's just get right into it.
00:04:06.159 --> 00:04:11.840
The first step I suggest you take if you think you're being ghosted is to pause, reflect, and ground down.
00:04:11.840 --> 00:04:15.039
Let's all just take a deep breath together.
00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:23.360
Even though it may not feel like it right now, you do have everything you need to get through this.
00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:26.720
So become aware of the story you're telling yourself.
00:04:26.720 --> 00:04:32.959
Do you really have all the information to determine that this relationship is over?
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:40.079
Try to separate what is really truly happening from any fear-driven assumptions you might have.
00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:46.480
The person who is unresponsive could be going through something you're not aware of.
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:50.959
I find this saying if they wanted to, they would really harmful.
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:54.079
What if this person has no cell phone reception right now?
00:04:54.079 --> 00:04:58.079
What if they had some type of extreme personal emergency?
00:04:58.079 --> 00:05:12.720
I have a friend who has a friend who she thought was ghosting her, but as it turns out, this person had checked themselves into rehab and didn't have access to their phone for over a month.
00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:17.439
Not everyone has the ability to communicate, even if they want to.
00:05:17.439 --> 00:05:26.160
And I know these examples might sound extreme, but the point I'm trying to make is that oftentimes people can't respond to you for whatever reason.
00:05:26.160 --> 00:05:32.639
And while you can't control that, you can control how you choose to respond to silence.
00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:41.040
Instead of rereading your texts with them or checking your phone to see if they've contacted you or monitoring their socials.
00:05:41.040 --> 00:05:46.720
And by the way, I'm saying these things because these are things that I have done in the past when I thought I was being ghosted.
00:05:46.720 --> 00:05:51.040
But instead of doing all of that, try practicing some self-care.
00:05:51.040 --> 00:06:00.959
You could cook a healthy meal for yourself or watch a funny TV show, move your body, shake it out, go on a run, go on a walk, exercise.
00:06:00.959 --> 00:06:04.079
Also be mindful to feel your feelings.
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:06.959
It's okay to cry, it's okay to be upset.
00:06:06.959 --> 00:06:08.639
That's very natural.
00:06:08.639 --> 00:06:11.839
Feel these feelings, but don't judge yourself for them.
00:06:11.839 --> 00:06:16.240
Be really nice to yourself as you're going through this because this is hard.
00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:16.959
I get it.
00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:18.639
This is this isn't easy.
00:06:18.639 --> 00:06:26.720
When somebody that you care about isn't getting back to you, it can be extraordinarily challenging and frustrating.
00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:28.959
So be nice to yourself right now.
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:32.240
You deserve respect and kindness.
00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:37.360
And somebody not showing up for you has nothing to do with your worth.
00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:39.279
You're always worthy.
00:06:39.279 --> 00:06:41.120
Nothing can touch that.
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:41.600
Okay.
00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:44.079
So at this point, just remember that.
00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:46.959
Stay rooted in the fact that you are important.
00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:48.160
You matter.
00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:51.199
You are a valuable person no matter what.
00:06:51.199 --> 00:07:03.360
Now, if at any point you feel uneasy during the next steps I provide to determine whether you're being ghosted or not, rewind and redo step one.
00:07:03.360 --> 00:07:05.920
Pause, reflect, and ground down.
00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:10.879
And for more healing tips, you can always listen to other episodes of this podcast.
00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:12.639
Let's move on to step two.
00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:14.000
Reach out to find out.
00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:19.519
If you haven't already, now's the time to reach out to the person you feel may be ghosting you.
00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:30.160
Communication is a two-way street, so it's essential to try to interact with this person by asking a question before you declare, I've been ghosted.
00:07:30.160 --> 00:07:32.160
You're not chasing them.
00:07:32.160 --> 00:07:36.720
You're doing your part to keep the lines of communication open.
00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:51.360
It's not desperate to send a message or two or even three to somebody you're in a relationship with when you're seeking basic clarity about what's going on.
00:07:51.360 --> 00:08:01.600
Plus, it's entirely possible that the person who's missing in action may be wishing, hoping, or waiting for you to reach out to them.
00:08:01.600 --> 00:08:04.319
Right now, you don't know if you're being ghosted.
00:08:04.319 --> 00:08:11.680
So it's completely reasonable to send this outreach message to get information about where you stand.
00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:25.199
But before you pick up the phone, hear me out because I want to share where, what, why, and when, and what I believe is the best protocol of reaching out to a potential ghost.
00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:25.920
Here it is.
00:08:25.920 --> 00:08:33.039
So first I would say when you reach out, do it via the normal lines of communication that you usually use to talk to them.
00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:36.320
So if you call them all the time, pick up the phone and call them, right?
00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:38.240
If you see them in person, walk up to them.
00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:40.879
Text them if you usually only text.
00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:45.679
And when you do this, ask a question that requires a response.
00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:52.000
Make it a quick question, be respectful and kind, and give them the benefit of the doubt.
00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:54.399
Keep it short and to the point.
00:08:54.399 --> 00:08:56.960
So I have a few examples for you.
00:08:56.960 --> 00:09:00.240
Hi, I haven't heard back from you.
00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:02.000
Everything okay?
00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:05.919
Or hi, I miss seeing you.
00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:08.080
Want to video chat.
00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:14.399
You could also write something more customized, like, hey, hope you're enjoying the amazing weather this week.
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:18.000
Do you have any fun outdoor plans?
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:23.679
So make this make sense for the circumstances that you're in.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:27.919
So I want to pause here and share an experience that one of my best friends recently shared.
00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:29.440
She gave me permission to share it.
00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:31.759
She called me up and said, Hey, I've been ghosted.
00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:33.519
And I said, Okay, tell me the story.
00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:40.559
She said, Well, a few weeks ago, I sent a question to one of my new friends and I sent a picture.
00:09:40.559 --> 00:09:45.519
She hearted the picture, but she never wrote back to my question.
00:09:45.519 --> 00:09:50.240
And it's just silence for a couple of weeks.
00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:55.519
And I know she is out and about, I see her on social media, whatnot, but she hasn't responded.
00:09:55.519 --> 00:09:57.279
And so I think I've been ghosted.
00:09:57.279 --> 00:10:10.720
And I said, okay, well, if this is an important friendship to you, which I think it sounds like it is, then what do you have to lose by sending a message that just says, like, hey, I haven't heard from you in a hot minute.
00:10:10.720 --> 00:10:13.600
How are things to this person?
00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:15.360
What do you have to lose?
00:10:15.360 --> 00:10:23.759
I mean, I think keeping the lines of communication open with somebody that you're friends with is really important.
00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:28.080
Trying to understand where they're at, what they're thinking.
00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:33.600
Instead of retreating and saying, I've been ghosted.
00:10:33.600 --> 00:10:42.159
I think it's important to try to have some dialogue with the person who's kind of missing in action.
00:10:42.159 --> 00:10:44.559
And my friend said, Thank you.
00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:45.200
You're right.
00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:46.559
I have nothing to lose.
00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:48.320
So I'm going to reach out to her.
00:10:48.320 --> 00:10:57.840
So going back to step two, after you've reached out once, give this person time to breathe and process and get back to you before you try to connect with them again.
00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:01.440
We live in this society of like instant replies.
00:11:01.440 --> 00:11:05.360
And so I think it's really kind to give people grace and space.
00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:16.399
Now, if you're in a situation where the person ignoring you has read your messages and you know this because you got the red receipts, or you see them active online and they haven't responded to you.
00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:26.320
Again, I want you to go back to this consideration of the fact that you might not be aware of what's going on behind the scenes.
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:36.480
I know it's frustrating, but maybe, maybe this person received intense news, or they just don't feel like engaging in conversation at this very moment.
00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:43.120
Additionally, just because they're active online doesn't mean that they're obligated to get back to you.
00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:47.759
Uh, one of my friends treats Instagram like going to the movies.
00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:51.840
So if my friend was at the movie, she wouldn't be on her phone texting me.
00:11:51.840 --> 00:11:55.039
For her, Instagram is like her main form of entertainment.
00:11:55.039 --> 00:11:58.799
So she's not going to be texting me while she's scrolling through reels.
00:11:58.799 --> 00:12:06.320
And also, a lot of people do use social media for work, so they might be active online, but they're working.
00:12:06.320 --> 00:12:11.440
Another outcome of texting an almost ghost is discovering you've been blocked.
00:12:11.440 --> 00:12:15.120
If you're in this boat, it doesn't mean anything about you.
00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:25.200
In many episodes, I explain why this is, but in a nutshell, when people have ghosted and blocked, it's about their unwillingness or inability to communicate with respect.
00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:30.320
Please be kind to yourself and whatever you do, don't blame yourself for their actions.
00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:30.879
All right.
00:12:30.879 --> 00:12:33.519
So just so we're on the same page, I'm gonna recap.
00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:43.840
The first step, if you think you're being ghosted, is to pause, reflect, and ground down, and then send a short outreach message to the ghost with a question just to see if they respond.
00:12:43.840 --> 00:12:50.080
And after you did that, make sure to practice some self-care, especially if you discovered you were blocked.
00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:52.639
And now at this point, you have a choice.
00:12:52.639 --> 00:12:55.360
You could follow up again or not.
00:12:55.360 --> 00:13:07.519
Let your level of follow-up be proportional to the relationship's scale, depth, and length, and only check in up to three times.
00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:14.159
So if on the first outreach you sent a text, maybe try calling the person this time.
00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:19.120
You could mix up the way you reach out to them if that feels right to you.
00:13:19.120 --> 00:13:21.519
And I'll give some examples.
00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:28.240
Let's say you're in a long-term relationship or you're married and you talk to this person every single day.
00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:32.240
Well, check in once a day for three days.
00:13:32.240 --> 00:13:36.720
You could say something like, Hey, I haven't heard back from you.
00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:39.600
I'm concerned, everything okay?
00:13:39.600 --> 00:13:46.879
If this is a friend and you only talk to them like once a month, text them once.
00:13:46.879 --> 00:13:51.360
And if they don't reply, text them a week later.
00:13:51.360 --> 00:13:56.480
At this point, you may be wondering how many days without texting is ghosting.
00:13:56.480 --> 00:14:05.440
Since every relationship has its own cadence of communication, it's impossible for me to provide a specific timeline for when you've officially been ghosted.
00:14:05.440 --> 00:14:12.639
And though every single situation is different, I have created some general guidelines to help you out.
00:14:12.639 --> 00:14:20.879
So if you're in the early to mid stages of a relationship, one week of unplanned silence likely flags ghosting.
00:14:20.879 --> 00:14:30.639
If you're in a committed relationship and you typically communicate with your person daily, you're entering ghost territory when there's been a few days of silence.
00:14:30.639 --> 00:14:42.000
And as a rule of thumb, if a good friend or family member who talks to you all the time ignores you for like a week, it likely flags ghosting behavior.
00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:45.279
Again, this framework is extremely flexible.
00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:47.679
It really depends on your situation.
00:14:47.679 --> 00:14:49.360
So I've covered a lot.
00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:55.600
First, you're gonna pause and reflect and ground down, and then you're gonna reach out to the potential ghost with a question.
00:14:55.600 --> 00:14:58.960
And you might do this once, twice, or even three times.
00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:03.120
And now it's possible that you realized, hey, I was ghosted.
00:15:03.120 --> 00:15:07.279
And if that's you, I have a few action steps I'm gonna get to in a second.
00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:22.240
But if you did all the steps and the person who was ignoring you comes back and you haven't been ghosted, and this is fairly soon after your outreach messages, well, they're not a ghost because now you're communicating with them.
00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:26.559
So ask yourself, how am I feeling in this relationship?
00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:29.759
Is this behavior acceptable to me?
00:15:29.759 --> 00:15:33.279
And if not, what action steps can I take?
00:15:33.279 --> 00:15:36.399
Ask the almost ghost what happened.
00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:39.200
Try to understand why they went silent.
00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:44.480
You could say something like, I noticed that our communication has been different than usual.
00:15:44.480 --> 00:15:46.639
Is there something you want to share?
00:15:46.639 --> 00:15:48.960
Observe their response.
00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:52.240
Hopefully, they'll explain why they were unresponsive.
00:15:52.240 --> 00:16:03.600
Hopefully, they'll care about how their behavior influenced your feelings and they'll take note of any communication requests that you have.
00:16:03.600 --> 00:16:10.000
I hope that this person is respectful and takes responsibility for going silent.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:28.000
But if that's not the case and they continue to breadcrumb you, or if they take forever to get back to you, or they're generally unresponsive, then it's high time to reevaluate if this relationship is actually even meeting your standards.
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:36.240
If, on the other hand, you never heard back after your outreach message, and now you're like, well, I have been ghosted.
00:16:36.240 --> 00:16:40.559
First of all, I'm sending you a big virtual bear hug.
00:16:40.559 --> 00:16:47.600
Ghosting is awful, and it's an inappropriate way to end a relationship.
00:16:47.600 --> 00:16:51.120
Nobody should have to experience being ghosted.
00:16:51.120 --> 00:16:58.080
And in my opinion, there is no excuse for intentionally ghosting somebody.
00:16:58.080 --> 00:17:03.919
If you have been ghosted, I have a couple of suggestions on what to do next.
00:17:03.919 --> 00:17:11.359
The first option is to meet silence with silence because you don't ever have to reach out to them again.
00:17:11.359 --> 00:17:13.440
And it's okay to say nothing.
00:17:13.440 --> 00:17:19.759
You don't owe a ghost an ounce of your time, energy, or effort.
00:17:19.759 --> 00:17:23.680
Another option is sending a final message.
00:17:23.680 --> 00:17:38.480
Here's my take: sending one respectful final relationship-ending message to a ghost can feel really good and be beneficial because it ends the relationship on your terms with clear communication.
00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:40.799
Your voice matters.
00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:47.200
And a final message signals to your brain that this relationship is over now.
00:17:47.200 --> 00:17:57.359
So I do have a template on what to say, and you can download the free text guide I have linked in my show notes for that script.
00:17:57.359 --> 00:18:17.519
Well, also, there's a scenario where if you're deeply involved with the ghost, like you are pregnant with this person's child, or you own a home together, you're married, or you have legally binding obligations, you might want to consider contacting a mediator or even a lawyer.
00:18:17.519 --> 00:18:29.359
Now, I also encourage you at this point to unfollow this ghost across all platforms like payment apps, social media, and beyond.
00:18:29.359 --> 00:18:31.920
If you do want to block them, go for it.
00:18:31.920 --> 00:18:33.839
That's a personal preference.
00:18:33.839 --> 00:18:39.440
For me, blocking is an act of self-care, but do what feels right for you.
00:18:39.440 --> 00:18:52.640
Do your best also not to reread all the messages you've had with them or to re-listen to their voice notes or look at pictures of them because you've put a significant amount of your focus on this person.
00:18:52.640 --> 00:18:57.440
And it's time for you to bring your attention back to yourself.
00:18:57.440 --> 00:19:06.319
Somebody who is unable or unwilling to show up to a relationship is not the person who's going to heal you.
00:19:06.319 --> 00:19:13.119
You don't need answers or an apology or a final conversation to feel better.
00:19:13.119 --> 00:19:20.400
You don't need anything from the ghost to move forward in your recovery process after being ghosted.
00:19:20.400 --> 00:19:34.079
And when you quit vying for a ghost's attention, you're stepping into your power because you're shifting your focus onto yourself and people who are choosing you.
00:19:34.079 --> 00:19:36.319
You're protecting your peace.
00:19:36.319 --> 00:19:40.000
You're saying, I choose me now.
00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:53.200
