A quote from the 19th century German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt still holds truth these days: “The unveiling of truth is inconceivable without differences of opinion.”
Humboldt believed that diversity of perspectives is essential for understanding the world. How we see the world depends on what we know, and certainly also on where we stand. On what we've experienced. And – perhaps most importantly – on how we believe the world should work. These days, at least from a European perspective, it can feel as though the world isn't working the way it should. Geopolitical rivalries are increasing. Autocrats are on the rise. Long-held assumptions about international cooperation and development are being challenged. And yet, inequality is rampant while we are more connected than ever before.
Climate change is reshaping economies and societies. And rapid technological developments are creating profound new opportunities and risks – for Europe and many other parts of the world. Humboldt might have said that we need perspective. Or rather: different perspectives. And that's the idea behind IDOS Perspectives – a new podcast from the German Institute of Development and Sustainability, or IDOS for short. IDOS is a research institute and think tank. We conduct empirical research, advise policy makers and enable knowledge cooperation and training. In this podcast we would like to share some insights from our work and put them into perspective. IDOS Perspectives explores some of the big questions emerging from the changing world order. In each episode, we'll take a closer look at a question that matters for the future of global development and international cooperation.
Autokratische Regime gewinnen an Einfluss.
