TENTANG EPISODE INI
In this installment of the Portus Perspectives series, William takes a step back from client stories and market commentary to answer a question that comes up more often than you might expect, even among people who already have a financial advisor.
What is financial planning? Really...
William's been in this business for over 20 years.
He started selling annuities and life insurance, moved to Morgan Stanley, and eventually landed in the back office of a growing financial planning firm where he learned what the profession actually looked like when done right. And the framework that firm used has stayed with him ever since.
They called it Part A and Part B... not the most glamorous branding, but the structure was solid.
Part A is the here and now:
1. Cash flow first. What do you make, what do you spend, what do you save?
2. From there, taxes. What are you paying now and what might you pay in the future?
3. Then retirement, or what William now calls financial independence. Do the assets you have accumulated support a life where work becomes optional? And if not, what investment strategy, savings rate, and bucket allocation gets you there? The 401k bucket, the Roth bucket, the taxable bucket, the 529 bucket. All of it lives in Part A.
Part B is the what if:
- What if you die?
- What if you can't work?
- What if you need long term care?
That's where life insurance, disability insurance, and long term care insurance come in. And then the piece nobody likes to talk about but everyone needs. Estate planning. When you're gone, where does the money go? To your spouse, your kids, a charity? How is it structured and what does it protect?
Wrap those two frameworks around each other and you have financial planning. Not investment management. Not tax prep. Not insurance sales. The whole picture.
If your current advisor only does one piece, William has a clear message for you: "That is not financial planning."
That is a single component of the bigger picture.
