TENTANG EPISODE INI
In this installment of the Portus Perspectives series, William opens with something every business owner knows well. The constant stream of people calling to tell you about the latest and greatest strategy, product, or tool that will change everything.
In the financial planning world, that call usually involves tax strategies. And right now, one of the most popular ones showing up on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok is the short term rental depreciation play.
Buy a short term rental property, place it into service, depreciate it aggressively in year one, and offset a significant chunk of your taxable income. As long as someone in the household is actively managing the property, the loss can offset income in that given year.
It's a legitimate strategy. William isn't here to knock it.
But he is here to make sure business owners understand what it actually is and what it is not.
It's a tax shelter.
It moves your tax liability around. It does not eliminate it.
The depreciation you take in year one is depreciation you ca't take in future years, meaning the income the property generates going forward is no longer being offset. And when you eventually sell the property without rolling it into a 1031 exchange, you are paying recapture taxes on everything you deferred.
William connects this to a story about his dad, who worked at E.F. Hutton in the 1970s and sold tax shelters built around oil and gas depletion strategies that were wildly popular at the time. Then the 1984 tax code rewrite came along and wiped most of them out overnight. That moment's stuck with William ever since. Every time someone pitches a tax shelter, his first question is when's the next tax code rewrite and what happens to this strategy when it comes.
The lesson isn't to avoid tax shelters. It's to understand them fully, plan around them, and never mistake a here and now solution for a long term strategy.
