GH: Committed to the podcast earlier to my call there in Sydney and I'm up early. Committed. Stay off work and I'm committed to the podcast already.
Conor Curran: What time what time is it there?
GH: It's a good time, 7.20 in the morning. The clocks went forward. So summer has officially started in Sydney. No, it's spring. It's spring because
Conor Curran: Nice. And is it is it summertime? Is today first day of sum right.
GH: there was a storm over the weekend. Tornado hit.
Conor Curran: Nice.
GH: Wasn't my run in the tornado, was an actual...
Conor Curran: Would wouldn't be your wouldn't be your wind your running generating that kind of wind?
GH: when assisted probably from another aspect of running but snap
Conor Curran: Yeah.
GH: performances.
Conor Curran: Good to see you back. We'll catch up in a wee minute. Mark, what about you?
mark malone: Thanks for having me on Connor. It's nice to I it's surprising we're gonna after you released a monologue during the week we're actually getting
GH: You
mark malone: we're actually gonna be able to hear our voices, myself and Jared,
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: rather than the
GH: I thought it was going to be, this is your life, Conor Kern.
mark malone: the Connor Kern monologue. did you get much feedback on your monologue?
Conor Curran: Well, you know I I haven't ha I haven't had a chance, no. I think two people have left it five star reviews
mark malone: No.
Conor Curran: on Spotify. And I was one of them. so we just saw filling with that microphone Malone, I'm gonna kill ya. Ha ha. Yeah, you were. Yeah, you were. No no, this is this is this is this is you this is your platform as much as mine. Mm-hmm.
mark malone: No no no, this is all
GH: Yeah, I'm alone. tried to ask for five minutes into the podcast and he said, no, I'll just do it all.
mark malone: This is this is all this is all Mr. Kern. This is all Mr. Kern.
Conor Curran: Well, I don't think so.
GH: The feedback I give them on the monologue was there's a lot of eyes going on in that recording. was I, I, I, I.
Conor Curran: And and who edited it heavily, Jared? I took your feedback on board and I cut I cut a lot of that out. I did. I know I did.
GH: Did you? I listened to it again. I was like, obviously he take our feedback on board.
Conor Curran: God, right, it's gotta be more or less. More of the same. More the same. listen, we've got a big go.
mark malone: I've wore I've I've wore a I'll be I'm surprised you haven't pulled me up on what I'm wearing. I wore this specifically
Conor Curran: has n is that your North of Ireland Masters running half
mark malone: So that's not
Conor Curran: sip?
mark malone: let's not get political. But this is a half set I'm wearing because I was selected to run unlike
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: unlike Mr. Kern here.
Conor Curran: We're not gonna reopen that. I mean, you've got plenty of opportunities to slag the Isle Boy, but you've obviously listened to the monologue where I I included that wee part about you slagging me at the rich pensioners' championships. Actually a few people got back to me on that. I don't think they were too happy, but there you go. Aye.
mark malone: Well what is it then?
GH: start off here as me to go on this podcast.
Conor Curran: Not exactly. Right. Listen, we've got a good show and a sort of decent sort of thirty to forty minutes coming up over the next while. So we're just gonna have a bit of a catch up and go into our training talk. we're just gonna review the training week that we've had. George's gonna kick off, I'm gonna go into my wee bit, Mark's household's been hit a wee bit by sickness and stuff this week, so that could be a fairly short segment. you'll not be hearing much from Malone in that bit. In fact you might not be hearing anything from Malone in this, so let us sort of mean Hini get our way.
GH: Nothing's changed in four years.
Conor Curran: yeah, nothing's changed. Nothing's changed. the next section then is spotted on socials, where we just go stuff that we've spotted in social media during the week. We have a section then called Parkrun Podiums, where we look at all of the fastest times across Ireland this weekend in Parkrun. and then we looked at the week ahead. In the second part of today's show, we've got a fantastic interview with two of Ireland's top rising distance stars, Callum Morgan and Amor Mayer. So we'll hope you'll stick around and not fast forward through the sweet bit. and give that a good review if you get it. so we'll be kicking off training, training week, Jared. Do you wanna take us through your Monday through to today? And well I suppose before they do that, how's your how's your running going?
GH: Questionable would be how the running's going. Not as consistent as probably I would like to be, but we're getting better. Work being busy and life being busy is just hard to get out the door sometimes. But sessions have started to come back in more often, which is probably the main thing. I thought jogging around would do it, jogging around seven-minute mile doesn't actually get you fit. in second sessions in, last week jogged for 50 minutes, around seven a mile. I've been noticing the heart rates come on down a bit, in the weather. it's like mid one thirties, which is good for me. then Tuesday evening went over to the park, which I'll refer to this park 99 % of my runs, which is Centennial park. Sydney's probably the best place. It's the equivalent of Vicky Park only it's not as flat. Did 10 by 2 minutes at around about 330 per kps which I think is like 530 mile. Walk and recover. Absolutely sweating buckets. was one of them.
Conor Curran: What kind of recovery? Like a minute or
GH: 60 seconds walk. Just far walking in between basically. It was more, do you know that 40 seconds walk and then start to jog the last 20 seconds? Yeah.
Conor Curran: Joking dude. Mm-hmm.
GH: not mad cause the clocks only changed at the weekend there. So it was starting to get dark, pretty bad in the park. So I had to go outside the park. and then Wednesday I jogged another 50 minutes. The plan is to increase them this week to an hour. So it'll probably be 13 or eight mile each day. And then Friday, so I'm doing a Tuesday, Friday split. It's easier than the standard. The standard. What do got there? Tuesday, Thursday, Friday we did a lap of the park. So that's what 3.7 K did that handy enough. I think the pace is like 350 to 400 Ks. So roughly about 550, six minute mile. and then walked over to a hill and did one 20 to like one 30 meter hills, which was trying to get the legs moving like closer to that, like three 10 piece. Haven't worked three 10 in about six months. No joke. First rep thought my hamstring went up the hill. I was like, what just happened? And then when you get going, did six by them and then Slow jog down and then five minute tempo at the end to kind of flush out the rubbish in the legs.
mark malone: Did you ever do raps on Drum Cree Hill back in the day? Yeah.
GH: My wraps are going down the hill rather than up the hill in drumcray.
mark malone: Fair plenty, yeah. Fair plenty, not many get to do that.
Conor Curran: Is that your traditional rate?
GH: Yeah, I actually got a free pass. I was allowed to go down the road. So it wasn't too bad. We got clearance from the locals. Not much of the protests were happening in this. And then I didn't run Saturday and then Sunday I got up for an hour yesterday to be about 70k for the week. So this week will probably be closer to the 100k. That's it.
Conor Curran: What kinda what kind of neck do you think you're in if you're on like a five K or tank at the minute?
GH: Honestly, I don't even think I could break 1730. But I do have a few plans to race because it's coming into the track season over here now.
Conor Curran: Mm.
mark malone: That's a good run for you anyway, no?
GH: So that's why. Well, you're not too far in front of me with your 5k PB, so you keep it going out there. think your 5k is the only one and the Marston is only one faster than me. Yeah, I want to try and get low 15s by the end of the year in the track, which will be very, very, very interesting.
Conor Curran: Good man.
GH: There's a money bet on it with a few boys around here.
Conor Curran: No, nice.
GH: I actually have to get out the door.
Conor Curran: Good man. It's nice little with the weather changing and all the like and Yeah, at least we're not coming back.
GH: I think last night I jogged and it was like 80 % humidity at 26, 27 degrees at 5 o'clock.
Conor Curran: God. solid
GH: Beautiful.
Conor Curran: solid week. What's that about forty five miles or so?
GH: Yeah, something like that. Nothing major
Conor Curran: Yeah.
GH: though.
Conor Curran: Mark, do you want to do yours? No, they'll do mine at the end. I'll wrap through mine at the
mark malone: Thirty minutes. Monday.
Conor Curran: I thought you were gonna say it, that's it. Thirty minutes.
mark malone: No, the thirty minutes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Friday, Saturday. that's it. Just thirty minutes. Just jog. Yeah, yeah, yeah. yeah. Absolutely. So well it turns out
Conor Curran: Running. right, on any pin or dear. Do you wanna do you wanna fill the listeners in on your on your injury rules in about thirty seconds?
GH: This might be a quick show, that's gonna take a while.
Conor Curran: Thirty seconds, thirty seconds.
mark malone: So it turns out I I I have a hernia, an inguinal hernia. So I definitely have to get a bit of an operation now. still that on Friday. So two choices, go to Manchester or get it done here. And that's it. That's on top of tornado ductures and a stress reaction. So but I think I
Conor Curran: Jeez.
mark malone: think I've always am convinced the hernia is the pain I had initially back in January and that caused everything else. And then but it just took until now to it didn't
Conor Curran: I agree properly.
mark malone: show up in the MRA and then different sort of ultrasound scans didn't see it until a couple of weeks ago. So even though I was
Conor Curran: Right, right.
mark malone: moaning to everybody that listened, two different consultants.
Conor Curran: Yeah. Is thirty minutes all you can manage without pain?
mark malone: No, I like it's I could go and run an hour, it's just uncomfortable.
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: and you could juggle for an hour, it's just annoying.
Conor Curran: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
mark malone: but I just know I couldn't run any quicker. Like I couldn't there there'd be no point in going to the section. So but
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: my Khalise is crying at me now too, 'cause I think I've done too much this week. But here. But
Conor Curran: Jesus. Falling apart. Showing you a youngster, you're falling apart.
mark malone: that's it. So yeah, no, it's sort of pointless. I'm just jogging for the sake of it.
GH: What's a recovery on a hernia?
mark malone: but sixty weeks, I think.
Conor Curran: Nasty. Well, we'll
mark malone: So yeah.
Conor Curran: keep you sane. If you if you jump onto this every two weeks we'll keep you sane and hopefully we'll
mark malone: I anchored London, the all right.
Conor Curran: Of course you did. Aye. London Marathon? Aye. Sensible. Good for age. You forty yet?
mark malone: Yeah, they're good for age. Just for the crack. I don't know. Yeah. I s No, but I was
Conor Curran: Soon.
mark malone: I messed up doubling last year. I didn't realise the championship time was sub two thirty eight. And I've had a no, not a wood around sub two thirty-eight. but I messed it by about fifteen seconds. I didn't realise that until like early this year. So
Conor Curran: Right.
mark malone: yeah, I just entered through it in for the sake of it. I may go. If I can run that would just be for a jog around, just something to do.
Conor Curran: Well you always bind
GH: Would you go on that two again? Is on the siren dance on Disney?
mark malone: It's a Saturday. Yeah, it's a s it's defin the men's is d did you hear how they don't made the decision between the
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: men's and the women's? rock, paper, scissors. They did if you go they did Yeah, they did they got
GH: No that didn't.
Conor Curran: Shut up. No they didn't. London Marathon. Ungood for the age.
mark malone: y no, to d to decide who ran on the Saturday and who ran on the Sunday. Rock, paper, scissors, yeah. Between they did. How much do you want about?
Conor Curran: They did rock, paper, scissors. No, they didn't, Mark. Go. Where'd you read that?
mark malone: On that's
GH: It is on BBC News.
Conor Curran: Is it?
GH: Yeah.
mark malone: Yeah, they got they got they got somebody from Games World Records and they got what do you call your World what do you call the sub two gay?
Conor Curran: So
GH: Sawa.
mark malone: yeah, they got him and one other female wheelchair off weeks to play a rock pier paper scissors. So the elite band, good for age man.
GH: Catherine de Brunner beat men's world record Sebastian Sawa in a game of rock paper scissors.
mark malone: Yeah, just kidding that. So all the men, all the like good free age championship on a late Saturday, all the women Sunday. So Mm, interesting.
Conor Curran: Right. Hm. Be interesting to see how that
GH: Apparently it was an
Conor Curran: works out.
GH: entertaining way to decide which day held the elitress. I'm sure it was enthralling to watch that.
Conor Curran: Maybe there should be more. Maybe Stormund maybe Storm maybe maybe Garvahi Road could be done on Vogue Paper Scissors. Are
GH: Jesus.
Conor Curran: you making your home check yet, G? No, we'll leave that by then, just for the crack, sure.
GH: There's a part getting edited.
mark malone: Do you reckon like we need a move for influence, but do you reckon A rogue male athlete could mess up the female risk. They would need to
Conor Curran: What do you mean?
mark malone: be ac like they would need to be capable of running low two teens. But do you reckon that there's a slight possibility that could happen on a Sunday? So
Conor Curran: I I d I actually don't know what you mean. I don't know what you mean.
GH: I was here saying
mark malone: so
GH: like a male to go out the front and actually ruin the women's
mark malone: Yeah.
GH: to like split it apart.
Conor Curran: right. Yeah, of course they will.
mark malone: If all if if if it all starts together, 'cause usually another way
Conor Curran: Yeah, and there'll be someone we know.
GH: but it's a women's only risk.
mark malone: No, it's not. No, it's it's just the elite like so the the masses will be mixed. It's not I I I I think I don't think it's gonna be Yeah, well true. But anyway, you know, you let's let's talk about the pensioners trailing week when you go. Did you use your bus did you
Conor Curran: yeah. It's the kind of thing he needed to think he need he'd need he need try and lead for four miles and then he'd blow up. Aye. Anyway, listen. Let's talk about other stuff. right, well I'll rat
mark malone: use your bus pass to get to the track?
Conor Curran: My buckfast on my bus pass. you're very funny. on Monday I did I well what was I doing? Monday. Monday, Monday. I got back from France, long weekend, wedding anniversary. Got out the door for an hour, an easy hour at seven twos and actually felt great. And given the amount of beer I put away in France that weekend, I had no right to feel that good.
GH: So I had about four paints.
Conor Curran: And it was about four pounds an hour for about ten hours on both days. It was horrendous. I'm telling you,
GH: You're from North Belfast, so it's definitely not what happens like it's probably before we lost the wine line.
Conor Curran: it was wild. But did an easy R seven twos at one one three seven average, which was very low. I was like, What's going on? Then the next
GH: So tap or threshold.
Conor Curran: I didn't let's not get into that. Malone doesn't believe in any of that stuff. next night up the track of my own four by a mile off sixty. first one five thirty-two, five twenty-nine, five twenty eight, five twenty-two. Felt quite good. Joel Come, Wednesday, easy nine, easy nine mile. Seven eighteens average at one forty, so heart rate's in a good place at the minute. it's taking a long time to get down that low. Thursday, back up the track. And did the same session again, four by mile and similar s
GH: Not to keep harping on about your age. How are you recovering to the Dune Tuesday, Thursday?
Conor Curran: What do you mean? It's I I don't I've I've always done it.
GH: Like does a body actually, yeah, but it's just cause you all done it like, but now have
Conor Curran: Mm.
GH: you seen over the years, like it takes longer to recover between the sessions or are you fine because you're actually not going that hard.
Conor Curran: I I'm not going that hard. Like the heart rates, you know, on those let me see what the heart rate was on those mile reps. I think it was like, you know, one sixties, yeah, like one
GH: because not a lot of groups actually train to use a thirst anymore.
Conor Curran: No, I know. And there's very few people up at our track actually do that. But I'm trying to actually just keep a lid on it. You know, all the training, none of its hand on knees, none of its sort of heavy breeding. So it's all feels fairly manageable. Friday did an easy hour just before flew over to England and then took Saturday off and then today I landed back home at about half one from England and was out the door at two and I did an easy twelve married at seven sixteens. And The heart rate was one forty three, so it was a wee bit tired. Don't know what the miles were for the week, but probably around fifty four, something like that. So good week. Just another solid good week. Nothing spectacular in it.
GH: Okay, you run for five, okay? What'd you run? 16.30 I see the other way.
Conor Curran: Sixteen twenty the other week. I'm doing the Galliber Thompson, I reckon probably if I got sixteen ten, something like that, I'd be happy enough at the minute.
GH: What's your objective for a road roister in the winter so you don't go into the muck?
Conor Curran: winter just do the Joe Cele, try and get mid thirty threes and then maybe go indoors again. So that's the plan.
GH: Also, what happened to the Joe Celia? I went to get onto the website to possibly enter it and I refreshed it and was gone.
Conor Curran: I think it sold out in about forty five minutes, didn't it, Mark?
mark malone: Would you not go down the jingle bells?
Conor Curran: Yeah, good end so yeah, I've I'm thinking jingle bells.
mark malone: They're not clashing.
Conor Curran: I don't think jingle
mark malone: Usually.
Conor Curran: bells is up on the website yet. I checked the other day. It's not up yet. It's usually the same
mark malone: Usu is it not usually the same day as C D?
Conor Curran: weekend. I think last year it might have been different weekends. but yeah, I'd like to do jingle bells. What?
GH: I'll be ahead of Heather. What am I doing? What am I doing, Jenga wheels?
Conor Curran: bought a new pair of those Puma R three's Aye like there's a double discount on them, so I couldn't I couldn't let them go. One eighty.
mark malone: Like everybody else. What should you get them for?
Conor Curran: I don't know. I haven't I haven't worn them yet, but
GH: I was listening to the Inside Run On podcast, the Nike Gaito and about the airparks.
Conor Curran: right, the new one?
GH: Yeah, the header, one of the head goes in Nike was talking about the Alpha four and the new air parks and the purpose behind the air parks.
Conor Curran: What what have you seen these, Mark?
mark malone: Yeah, I've I've seen there's three.
Conor Curran: The very sexy odd.
mark malone: no, I haven't seen that, I've just seen photos.
GH: Well, the Apex is not for me because it's apparently meant to be for the elites. and the alpha fly is catch your shelf on,
Conor Curran: Mean is mean you Malone? Or do we get a power?
GH: the alpha flies. said it's the best Martin to you on the market. then the, Apex is meant to be more robust and for the actual racer. so it's got more guts to the front of it. And I think it's probably going to be more aggressive. So very, probably very like the Puma. but the it's got a double stack airport on it and apparently they can change the actual pressure in it in the airports, but they didn't for this one to be consistency to be consistent so that the material around it doesn't actually deteriorate. So it'll be very interesting to see what that shoes like in a couple of years.
Conor Curran: A nice looking shoe, aren't they?
mark malone: You could bring back your reviews, Jared. Remember you d you you done the all to you can
GH: I know two and half thousand two and a half thousand
Conor Curran: So
GH: two and a half thousand views on the AlphaFly one of the first to get it.
mark malone: Somebody hanging out at the side of a car.
Conor Curran: his YouTube channel?
GH: It's up on YouTube, out of two videos, one in McGarrett.
Conor Curran: His dad his dad was hanging out of the car with a camera for him. Do you have in there, Jert?
GH: Do know why Hickey said that line back in the day?
mark malone: That was the Alphas or something, wasn't it? You like you bought one of the you got the pre sale or something?
GH: Yeah, got the pre-sealed of the Alphalight one. Down Oxford Island, mate was hanging out the window near fucking Ditchit.
Conor Curran: Bring I think you need to bring back that YouTube channel.
mark malone: Then sent took them a review and sent them back.
GH: done a review and put them on Facebook marketplace for 500.
Conor Curran: Right. Listen, that's the trade in the week's done. Let's move on. Spotted on socials. I'm gonna rapidly read out a load of stuff that has been spotted on social media over the last week. And then we're gonna choose one each to talk about. And I'm gonna miss some of this stuff, Mark. So if I miss anything, you let me know, okay? And I'm gonna You're gonna time me and you're gonna cut me off.
mark malone: Yeah, I'm gonna t I I'm gonna time ya. So you're getting it's I'm renaming this segment. What do I call it? Social sprint? Sprint social social sprint? And you've sub threshold.
Conor Curran: Social sprint?
GH: Probably a threshold if you're timeing it. It's probably a threshold on socials. Sub-threshold.
Conor Curran: L T one. L T one. How many seconds have I got?
mark malone: You've got eleven you've
GH: as long as you can last, which is not that money.
mark malone: got eleven point one three, Rashid Alalecki's hundred metre work.
Conor Curran: Right. Time we want to go.
mark malone: And because you have to do the old classic, do you know when people do their like they take their bloods on the track and they've got a camera looking at them and you have to do the old
Conor Curran: Not better not.
GH: What is that?
mark malone: That's like apparently your your bloods don't count unless you stick your tongue out and do the old wave to the camera and say, Come with bloods
Conor Curran: Not there. Right?
GH: that one hasn't migrated across.
mark malone: Doesn't work.
Conor Curran: I this is an audio only podcast, it's not gonna work. right. Start me off there. Ready? Sent. Go.
mark malone: Alright, hold on. On your marks. Get set. Go.
Conor Curran: Right. Double marathon to be televised live and free the air on TV four. The entry fee going up to 130 euros. Spencer Matthews and his big apology on Instagram to Steven Scullion.
mark malone: That's it, so you get two you get that's it, that's eleven seconds. That's eleven seconds. That's eleven seconds. You get two points.
Conor Curran: What? That wasn't eleven seconds. That was like five seconds. come on ahead. I've like I've I've like half my list done. come on.
GH: You That's why the monologue was 25 minutes. That's why the monologue was 25 minutes.
Conor Curran: Right, you were not doing eleven seconds. Dude a thirty second two hundred.
mark malone: What it so do you wanna will do the four hundred meter world record? What? Or not world record, national record. Right.
Conor Curran: Right, Jesus Christ. Right, no, just right, okay. Well, time the rest, but then we'll see. But there's only like six things here.
GH: it was actually a little longer segment of the title
Conor Curran: Jesus Christ. Right. Okay. Jakob and the Run Fest in Norway and Sandnese. Vinny Morey, the treadmill king from Chicago, article on Let's Run. Absolutely mental sessions. This guy guy was doing. AI slop advertising races. Seems like every flyer has been generated by Chat GPT. Splits dot IE, brilliant new website that we've all been on this week. might be worth talking about. Arma five K Flyer came out and seems to be quite a few races on that. anything else, boys?
mark malone: what else had you?
GH: Sam Bruce training with the Irish quilt.
Conor Curran: Time Ruth, up and font. Yeah.
mark malone: I seen The fifteen hundred metre European bronze medalist racing in Sligo today. casual
Conor Curran: Maybe it's odd.
mark malone: threshold ten K twenty
GH: Oscar.
mark malone: nine thirty six.
Conor Curran: Who's that?
GH: Colescom.
mark malone: Coco Aldre Cosgram. Yeah.
Conor Curran: right. Okay. Interesting. Well I'm gonna add one more in. some seventeen year old French kid ran a European under eighteen ten K and French under twenty record. Metzian Benau in Brassov ran twenty eight thirty nine and he's seventeen. So what one do you
mark malone: You had you had one on your list about a well known athlete.
GH: going overseas.
mark malone: University.
Conor Curran: Yeah, might just leave that yeah, might just leave that for another episode. Yeah.
mark malone: Might not talk about that. That's fine. That's fine. What about the
GH: I might take that one.
mark malone: what about
Conor Curran: Mm.
mark malone: what about the person getting done for full?
Conor Curran: Yeah, might just leave that for legal reasons as well.
mark malone: And he you should go and check out the Belfast Telegraphs article today. Yeah. But everybody else should. Running Marth and running
Conor Curran: No, I did check that out. We'll leave that we'll leave that out for legal reasons. Right, pick pick what
mark malone: benefits cheat defiant over fifty two thousand pound fraud and they're still affiliated to Athletics NA, so there you are.
Conor Curran: Well, I I'm not picking that one. But if you want if you want to chat about that one, Mark, crack on.
mark malone: Not it not.
Conor Curran: Right, okay.
mark malone: I think we should talk about splits.ie.
Conor Curran: Yes, I do too. Right.
GH: 100%.
mark malone: I dropped I dropped Creswee message. Did you drop my message, Connor?
Conor Curran: I did. Why don't you give us a bit of background on the website, Mark, and what it's all about?
mark malone: It popped up on my Instagram this week. It's basically an Irish version of Piratein. and I think if you remember when we chatted a number of years ago with Mr. Conroy, I think the subject came up about
Conor Curran: Mm-hmm.
mark malone: not having. And he's like, it'd be great if something if somebody was able to do something because you have the two main sites in the South pop up in my room results. all the results are there. But they're they're just not like part of ten. And that's what this splits.a is and you can your profile you can go and claim your profile and it's accurate enough now. Look, it's it's not it doesn't have my sub twos, but we'll let that go.
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: but it's good, it's dead handy to use. It's and his mate seems to have something similar for Martin type tracking. train up but yeah splits that A it's really yeah it's just
Conor Curran: Yeah. Re I w I was really, really impressed by it. Like I when I saw it come up, I thought, looks quite professional in terms of the Instagram posts, nice website. Then someone messaged me going, Is this is this what you lads are up to? thinking the final split and splits.a. They thought we were behind it. So I was like, No, no, we'll have a wee look at it. And that
mark malone: You should have claimed it.
Conor Curran: yeah, then I went on to it and I was like, nah, bet you this is not great. Stuck my own name in. I was like, gee, Burge Creepers, he's got all of my results from Ireland. Now I think there's very few Northern Ireland results or UK results at the minute. I'm not sure whether that's is hit
GH: Hard border.
Conor Curran: his yeah, that's his intention to do that. But I was surprised that like so you've got the homepage, rankings, races, clubs, head to head. You can log in and create your own profile. You can submit missing races and it's it's actually
mark malone: Rankins and everything. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's really good.
Conor Curran: The rankings are brilliant actually. really up to date. I mean, they had my two recent most recent races there. So yes, it's Chris O'Sullivan who's put it all together. And I dropped them a wee message. You must have messaged him around the same time, Mark. And I think we'll get him onto the show at some point over the next few weeks. Definitely.
mark malone: Yeah, 'cause it's definitely worth publicising that 'cause it's really it's really good. Talking about rankings. see the Fet fifty Irish Martin record went last week. Mr Michael Venna.
Conor Curran: Really? What'd he do?
mark malone: Brian, yeah. Two twenty six.
Conor Curran: Two twenty six? Wow. Well
mark malone: Five fifty.
Conor Curran: done, Brian. Gee, did you see split start AE?
GH: Yeah, I did say it had a nosey around it. I'm a big fan of it in terms of the actual interface on it. Very, if you're on the webs, if you're on a desktop, it's very visually good. I haven't actually went onto my phone. It's very good. I like the fastest across the year.
Conor Curran: Mm.
GH: And I was checking them out because it's hard to actually, if you're trying to see all these races, it's hard to actually see people who are actually running well. And then if you're looking at them, can kind of group them as well.
mark malone: He has the banger tank A last week on it, Satan Classics, so yeah, so it must be.
Conor Curran: does he? so he's he's pulling Northern Ireland races in too? Okay. Well listen, Chris, keep keep up the good work. We're big fans and we'll definitely get you on the show in a few weeks' time to chat about it.
GH: Malone, what was the other website that you did? was trying to actually find it. Remember the one that did all the races and it showed you the profile of it? I think that's another website actually, out. Cause it showed all
mark malone: The profiles, the elevation profiles. Yeah.
GH: the profile of all the websites or all the races and it had the elevation profile on it. I tried to find the name of it, can't find it. Can't find it. Do you remember that one Connor?
Conor Curran: No, don't remember.
mark malone: probably called Irish Downhill Races dot A.E.
GH: We'll find that one for the next recording, but yeah.
mark malone: Every road race you look at in the south. It's questionable, isn't it?
Conor Curran: any what other? Okay, let's ask your one w dun splits.ie jarred. What do you want to talk about spot on socials?
GH: what's the big, why is there so much media around Dublin Martin raising it to one 30? I thought one 30 is a reasonable price.
Conor Curran: I don't is it Mark? You do more marathons than anyone?
GH: 20 euro 20 euro increase
mark malone: Everything's dear. Everything's it's
Conor Curran: Is one thirty? Is one thirty good value for a doubling?
mark malone: I don't know. Like it's it's more expensive than London Marathon. And people will always probably throw that line out.
Conor Curran: Mm.
GH: London Barsons is cheap. Is London not like 50 quid?
mark malone: It's it's it's a lot cheaper.
GH: Like Sydney was, Sydney was like $300, which was like 160 or like 180.
mark malone: Like how much is Belfast? I think Belfast is maybe it's probably it's going up to about sixty or something. It's stupid. Like everything's
Conor Curran: The path that's would be probably like seventy. Okay, yeah. Everything's going through the roof.
mark malone: everything's mad. I don't like it's
GH: But with Dublin, is there ever anything, there's never really any complaints with Dublin in terms of
Conor Curran: No.
mark malone: No, it's always yeah.
GH: collecting your babes, organization of the race. The actual course is pretty good. Everybody on course is actually good.
mark malone: The expo last year was a bit of a mess. but yeah, like it's I don't know. What do you do? Everything's
GH: I don't think 130 is actually
Conor Curran: Well
GH: the bottom for an answer.
Conor Curran: I I don't think one thirty's that I don't think one thirty's that bad. And to be fair, like the Irish Times run an article on it and basically said, look, the organizers are saying it's the first time in five years they've hik hiked the price. Ever the cost of everything are going up. So last year the entry fee was 110 euros and and so it's it's gone to one thirty, eighteen percent rise. and from next year's event the four euro ballot fee will be refunded to all unsuccessful applicants. said there was a record forty-seven thousand applications in the lottery based ballot for this year's event with the five euro administration fee applied to cover all entries. the increased entry fee for 130 euros plus platform and payment processing fees is mainly the result of inflation, significantly increasing the cost of delivering the event. and I think they've been on social media. Like I saw a few posts on this week where the CEO Sean O'Reilly came on and like
GH: Yeah, say not what's up.
Conor Curran: They've been fairly transparent about it, you know, and anyone I know who does Dublin says what a brilliant day out it is, what a brilliant event it is. There's never any complaints. And, you know, if they if they Yeah,
GH: with it being televised this year, gonna make it even better.
Conor Curran: exactly. And, you know, if they're able to keep keep it as a running event because it does feel like a runners marathon as opposed to like a big charity event and they put the money back into the race or the supporting races, which are all really good as well. I think runners will suck it up because it gives them a it gives them a good autumn focus. And when it comes around everyone loves it. So yeah. There you go.
GH: Yeah, that's mine.
Conor Curran: Everything else is going up. yeah, no, in terms of spotted on socials, let me see what I'll pick.
GH: We can't go on about a slop when we did.
Conor Curran: No, I know. Spencer Matthews
mark malone: What about
Conor Curran: thing I thought was interesting, though. did you see it? Storm the T comp. Click bit, no?
GH: We'll not start off that in the first podcast.
mark malone: I watched to be fair when Mr Scullion and Mr Matthews started working together originally, I got sucked in because it was very funny. and then I stopped watching it and then
Conor Curran: Aye. Yeah.
mark malone: somebody said, do you hear the two boys have fallen out? I was like
Conor Curran: Yeah. It seems that d well they s it seems like they didn't really fall out. You know, it
mark malone: No.
Conor Curran: just seems like there'll be difference of opinion and they're still good mates. So
mark malone: It was very funny because Scullian didn't take any nonsense and it
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: was really amusing. but but here what
Conor Curran: Yeah, yeah. anyway, a stun
mark malone: about Orma so we'll just maybe this last one, Orma now having a women's five K for the first time. I would imagine it's
Conor Curran: I so why why don't you sort of see what tell sort of tell the listeners are what you've spotted?
mark malone: Well I just seen it was just before we come on the Sherlock Post. the women's races are growing to races, elite women's five K, a new world accredited five K for our elite women and then three K open, so it's it's pretty much like for like for the men's. Five K elite and three K open.
Conor Curran: I think that's brilliant.
mark malone: yeah, so 'cause the women I was only at one race as well. It was just
Conor Curran: Yeah.
mark malone: three K so no it's yeah, it's it should be good. It may bring a higher like the female races we're always talking but it may get more because it's more of a five K is more of it's it's it's a more common race distance, I guess it so no, that should be good. That should be good.
Conor Curran: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. What do you think, G?
GH: Will it dilute the women's field? Like
mark malone: No.
GH: is there enough women that come across or race the three care that will fill out both sides? So like, I mean like the top
mark malone: I think it'll be like it'll be like
GH: end.
mark malone: but you're look at the men's the elite men's five K there's a handful of people from Ireland. Everybody else is shipped in and the op the three K open is all locals, apart from one or two maybe.
Conor Curran: Mm.
mark malone: so it'll probably be the same. So the elite women's five K be pretty much all people from across the water with the the Top end Arch.
Conor Curran: Yeah. And the three K the three K might become more of a club event or something. Do you know what I mean? Or juniors can do it, you know?
mark malone: Yeah, the same as the yeah, yeah, I think.
GH: No, I was kind of thinking that because you see,
mark malone: Yeah.
GH: I'm using splits, splits data either to check up the history on it. because you always, it's like, you always hear about the men's being so top heavy and all of these people coming across the world. was thinking, is that possible for the women's? because normally you only hear of like the first like maybe 10, 12 people. because this year nine, seven won the women's three K.
mark malone: Could have been a case that not travelling for a three K.
Conor Curran: Yeah. Yeah. I mean the three K time three K time's not gonna mean much, is it? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well lesson good to see. We're big fans of the Arma. Mm.
GH: Could be, be, could be, yeah. And it's a good opportunity for people to actually risk focus.
mark malone: Yeah, I'm not you know, I'm not gonna make No, I'm not gonna make the effort for a three K hours. If it's a five K it's like mm, that'll be worth more. But yeah, no, that's good to see. It's good to see it's all. Remember there was an awful rumour going about a couple of years ago it wasn't coming back.
Conor Curran: Yeah. Who started that? Who
GH: That was not allowed two years ago to
Conor Curran: started that rumor?
mark malone: An unreliable source.
Conor Curran: Aye. That's why that podcast shut down.
GH: You
Conor Curran: we're big fans of everything related to the OMA road race. They do a brilliant job up there. So maybe if we're still going in the new year.
GH: Remember I used to run around the bike and got half of everybody's name wrong.
Conor Curran: Still do. Still do. yes, okay, listen,
GH: So here's a quick segment there. Going ahead to the next one. A quick segment.
Conor Curran: let's rattle on. we'll look at parkrun listen, we know parkrun isn't a race. And before anyone gets up on their high horse and writes in, it's not a race, it's not a race. Let's just remind everyone that Parkrun is a fantastic event run across Ireland, every county, every week, for all abilities. And that in that also means People who are good club runners or international runners use it as a wee tempo session, threshold session, or a time trial. We all know it. And we are not trying to deflect from any other element of parkrun being a a fun timed run. But at the same time, we've done a wee bit of homework and we've looked at all of the parkrun results across Ireland this week. And every time we do a show, we're gonna read out the fastest meal. Park runners, the fastest female parkrunners in Ireland this weekend, and then the highest scoring age graders in Ireland. and that's just to give a little bit of recognition to that level of runner who who does parkrun every week. So Mark, do you wanna or go go.
GH: Wait there before you start, I have question here? Are we going to give people the platform who don't use a barcode because no doubt that's coming up in a couple of weeks and there will be
Conor Curran: Yeah.
GH: a group that turns to Vicky Park and don't actually use their barcode. I would like to put that segment that if they turn up, no, if they turn
Conor Curran: Listen. We'll put that in. Yep.
GH: up, we don't mention them because Malone is not right. You don't turn up your barcode. Shouldn't be mentioned.
mark malone: Yeah. And now write Connor. And I write mid. And now write. Yeah, that's right, yep. Connor
Conor Curran: Okay, I'll bring my barcode. I'll bring my barcode to Vicky Park in a few weeks. Yeah. All right. Wrists smacked. But no, it's a third
GH: Just,
Conor Curran: point.
GH: just if you're going to give so much publicity to this part, you need to actually also participate on none of this. I was doing a tempo session. Didn't have time to for that 10 seconds
Conor Curran: Okay. Okay. All right. All right.
GH: to put my number in.
mark malone: Connor's the Irish Parkrun record holder for not scanning barcodes.
Conor Curran: No I'm not. for an Oscar Prove it. Prove it, prove it. Right, who's
mark malone: Right, females top three, top three, top top two
Conor Curran: doing the mail and who's who's doing mail?
GH: You already mentioned this Malone's doing females. Go ahead Malone.
mark malone: I'll go. So top three
Conor Curran: Right, go ahead, Mark.
mark malone: females. Top two Irish internationals. Not sure about third. But top two definitely. Amory B. Glynn at Holy Cross College. And then Olympian Sophie O'Sullivan. was down in Inch Beach. Inch Beach? Where's it? Inch Beach. County
Conor Curran: I've been imagining cork.
mark malone: County Court. And then Katrina Edding Eddington.
GH: Wrong boys carry, near dingle.
mark malone: Omo Park. there you are. Top three. Times, you went or Times.
Conor Curran: Don't give their time, sorry, Mark? Mm.
mark malone: Times. Seventeen four, seventeen thirty two, eighteen thirty four. And Amory and Sophie were both first of a lie as well.
Conor Curran: Two famous names, I see, down their parkruns, and mails chart.
GH: Meals we got Evan Fitzgerald, 1524 Dora Whelan, 1537, and Morty Cox, 1553.
Conor Curran: Yep. Marty was at
GH: HUL
Conor Curran: Omo. Darwin was at is that Mungret? Mungret? M-U-N-G-R-E-T. Never heard
GH: Yeah, I've never
mark malone: Yeah, mongrate.
Conor Curran: of it. And Evan was at Cool. C O O L E. Dara Willin, have you heard of him?
GH: von Gretchen Lemmrich.
Conor Curran: Have you heard of Darwin?
mark malone: Don't think so. It's it sounds like we should.
Conor Curran: No. Absolut.
GH: No. 15 to 17 year old.
Conor Curran: you you'll be hearing all about Darr Wheelin this autumn. He is an absolutely unbelievable runner, junior runner. I think he's sixteen, seventeen, maybe closer to seventeen, Irish junior international, but a superb runner. looking at Irish sorry, looking at the highest age grade park runners then, and this name's gonna come up probably every time that we read it because she's always there at the top. Annette Keely, former Irish International at Malahyde, female fifty-five to fifty-nine, with an age grade of ninety-nine point two zero from Raheini Shamrock running in eighteen forty-five. That's crazy. in second place, another woman, Eileen Kenny. female seventy five to seventy nine, age grade ninety eight point two seven. She's from St Finn Bars and she ran that at Glen River. That's twenty five seven. And in third place Anne Marie, who won that race up well not sorry, won that race, who was first across the line at Parkrun. At Holy Cross, she was third. So three women are the three highest age graders in Parkrun in Ireland this weekend. So well done, ladies. great running.
mark malone: I was gonna I was gonna slag Amory, but it's not right.
Conor Curran: sure we've plenty of time to do all that. Sure. We'll have to get it on. Listen, the week ahead, how's it how's it looking for you, Mark? Runaways? Do you think there's you gonna get out at all or are you gonna just do other things?
mark malone: no I have to phone my medical insurance company tomorrow to see if they'll pay for travel and accommodation.
GH: you
Conor Curran: Course it will.
mark malone: I said that's the head of my training week and then just just jog.
Conor Curran: That's your week that's your wake ahead. Aye.
mark malone: Just jog.
Conor Curran: Well, hopefully there's not too much pain, Jared. What's yours looking like?
GH: Going to do session tomorrow and session Friday. What are your any thoughts on? Give me a session for tomorrow. We tempo, we threshold, we rep once. I was thinking three minute reps.
Conor Curran: Why don't you why don't you do a progression? When you never seem to do like a a progression. Go out and do an eight mile progression. Start at seven and get under six minute mile for the last one. See how you get on.
GH: Cause they don't make a losty at mo.
Conor Curran: Cosha well.
GH: No, mean, because it's time to get dropped down. I think a few weeks before that, because I might do parkrun this weekend, talking about parkrun. Just give a baseline
Conor Curran: All right.
GH: where we're at. So I think I might do a session on Thursday of kind of a few reps and then hills. Get that leg spinning.
Conor Curran: I'm sure you can fill this in next time with chat. Mark, have a good one. Hope everything settles down. Me
mark malone: What are you doing this week?
GH: What are you doing? What are you doing, Karen? Yeah, what are you doing?
Conor Curran: this week, just normal, just two sessions. I'll probably do a Tuesday night and then there's a few boys doing Valencia Martin training from the club. So there's about I think there's about seven or eight boys from Harriers are all going to Valencia and they're starting their Saturday morning marathon paced sessions at Vicky Park. I think this Saturday. So normally they start like seven seven laps and go like five fifty fives and then they they rocket that up to like, you know, twelve, thirteen miles over the next while. So I might just jump in and do a few weekends of like steady seven, eight mile runs on Saturday mornings. They're a good crack.
GH: We have Melbourne Marathon on this weekend as well. Kepchoge's down for the Nike Marathon.
Conor Curran: I saw it I saw that. I saw And Shania Diver is down. She's like the
GH: Yeah. She, she needed divers for the women's, Kipchoge.
Conor Curran: Yeah.
GH: And then if he's a fan of cycling, Jimmy Whelan's debuting over the marathon, he ran 61
Conor Curran: So that
GH: low and, Antrim, that'll be interesting. And then
Conor Curran: Is that this weekend chart?
GH: yes, on that. it'll be probably Saturday evening, you guys. So it'd probably be easier to watch. Maybe like 10 30, UK at time, Saturday evening and local close to home finished on the podium last year in Dublin. Nicholas Sheridan is written,
Conor Curran: Yeah, so that as well. We'll we'll keep an eye out for Sinead Diver and I'm sure with all your contacts, Jared, you'll be able to get Sinead on the show, no bother. For us, so Mike You're run through lads. Come on. You're gonna name drop the other week and you you didn't drop any come on, drop some names who you're running with. Who are they all these famous people?
GH: know any famous people? I'm just Joe Bloggs running around the park. Never know who you see.
Conor Curran: no you are. well
GH: Just seen Peter Boll, fourth place in the Olympics just running around the park. She just have Benny Sint run the group. Nobody know who Benny Sint is.
Conor Curran: Benny St. Lawrence.
GH: Not a whole lot.
Conor Curran: Very good. Well listen, here we'll wrap it up. good seeing you back again. And in part two of the show we've got the the interview with Emer and Callum. GH: funny comments have more with
mark malone: I thought I thought he was ten. Have you just siphoned five off?
Conor Curran: Ten? ten entries? No, no, that's I think it was five.
mark malone: Do you not give ten entries? You just keep it five? Sub
Conor Curran: Well I'll double check it. Well there's five races I wanna do.
mark malone: First three.
Conor Curran: I was thinking the three of us could do jingle bells, so like we'll use those three. You know, and then I maybe I get
GH: Yeah, I'll probably take that.
Conor Curran: one for Cassie, you know, you get one for Rosie, you know. Don't tell anyone. So there's only five, right? All right, boys, boys. Good seeing ya. I do go and leave a one star review.
mark malone: I might leave a review, get an oil. I'll probably the only audit review.
Conor Curran: Boys, good seeing you.
