Do you know a livery yard manager or owner is keeping strangles out of their busy yard? Yard Managers and Owners play an important role in horse owner education and protecting horse health but updating livery agreements and disease protocols can be tricky when it calls for horse owners to follow new rules.
When and how do you upgrade your biosecurity. How do you encourage horse owners to follow the rules and how do you prepare yourself for an infectious horse on your yard?
In this episode we speak to Yard Manager and British Horse Society Welfare Officer Anna Gregory who manages the Yard at Brackenhurst Campus of Nottingham Trent University. Although students may come with a lack of understanding she explains how the Yard's policies educate and reassure clients and how gratifying it is to see biosecurity become an integrated part of everyday horsecare.
We also hear from Cheryl Johns who is founder of the UK's largest Livery Yard Directory and equestrian columnist and blogger on all things Livery Yard. She has passionately advocated for better biosecurity across the Livery Yard Sector whether small scale or catering for scores of horses.
The conversation is an inspiring one for anyone on a yard with aspirations of better disease prevention and preparation before an outbreak happens.
Strangles Awareness Week is a campaign that aims to promote openness around the disease and make biosecurity a part of everyday horse care across the Equine Industry. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the British Horse Society, Intervacc, Keeping Britain’s Horses Healthy, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Scotland’s Rural College’s Premium Assured Strangles Scheme (PASS), Surveillance of Equine Strangles (SES), The (Dick) Royal School of Veterinary Studies and World Horse Welfare.
