1. Elisha’s Unbreakable Loyalty to Elijah (2 Kings 2:1–15)“As the Lord lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.”
When Elijah called Elisha, Elisha immediately left his family’s wealthy agricultural business. As Elijah’s ministry neared its end amidst dangerous transitions, Elijah repeatedly told Elisha to stay behind for his own safety. Elisha refused to abandon his mentor, remaining by his side until Elijah was taken up to heaven. Because of his persistent, active commitment, Elisha inherited Elijah’s mantle and a double portion of his prophetic spirit.
2. Barnabas Staking His Reputation on Paul (Acts 9:26–27)Following Saul’s dramatic conversion, the Jerusalem apostles were terrified of him due to his past persecution of Christians. Barnabas stepped in as a dependable advocate—risking his own reputation by bringing Paul before the apostles and defending his genuine transformation. Later, Barnabas traveled to Tarsus to retrieve Paul, bringing him into leadership at Antioch and launching his global missionary calling.
3. Jonathan’s Sacrificial Covenant with David (1 Samuel 18:3, 20:13–17, 23:17)“You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you.”
Jonathan, the rightful heir to King Saul’s throne, recognized that God had anointed David as the next king. Instead of fighting for his own royal succession, Jonathan made a formal covenant with David. He actively protected David from Saul’s assassination attempts, risked his own life to warn him, and declared his desire to see David succeed. Years later, David fulfilled his end of that covenant by permanently providing for Jonathan’s disabled son, Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9).
