The Internal Map | Navigating Suffering and Glory

"All of us carry an internal map inside of us and we overlay our entire life experience based on this map."

An episode of "The Pursuit of God" series on the ReNew Your Mind podcast, based on Donna K. Woolam's book His Hostage Heart | Encountering the Unrelenting Love of God.

In this episode of The Pursuit of God series, Author and Teacher Donna K. Woolam explores the "internal maps" we use to navigate life’s hardships. Using the Gospel story of the man born blind, she challenges the religious grid that equates suffering with personal sin or a God who inflicts pain for His own glory. Donna shares her own journey through her husband Richard’s cancer diagnosis, illustrating how we must often abandon old maps to discover God’s true character in the midst of the mud. The core transformation is moving from a place of blaming or hiding from God to a place of generative language—asking Him what false beliefs are hurting our relationship with Him. The call to action is to surrender our faulty overlays and run to Him, where His presence is most felt in our brokenness.

---------------------

Have you ever felt like you were navigating a terrain that didn’t match your map? When life hits hard—be it a health crisis, a broken relationship, or financial ruin—we often overlay our pain with old stories or religious traditions that don’t actually reflect the heart of God. I’ve sat in those dark rooms, most notably in 2017 when my husband Richard’s cancer returned, and I realized my old map couldn't guide me through this new valley. We have to decide: will we believe the lie that God is holding back, or will we trust the Master Architect who kneels in the mud with us?

• The Internal Map: We all navigate life through a grid created by past experiences and stories, but often this map colors our reality incorrectly and hides the true terrain of God’s grace.

• The Wrong Question: Like the disciples, we often ask "Who sinned?" when we see suffering, but Jesus shifts the focus from the cause of the pain to the revelation of God’s glory through it.

• God as the Master Creator: In the story of the man born blind, Jesus uses mud—a callback to creation—to show that He is not a distant observer of our pain but a participant who enters into it to bring restoration.

• Generative Language: True healing begins when we stop hiding and ask, "God, what am I believing in this situation about myself or You that is hurting us?".
