À PROPOS DE CET ÉPISODE
What if what looks like procrastination is really resistance, and there's a reason underneath it?
On Tuesday I challenged you to name one thing you've been resisting. Today we get to the why. In this episode, I share what I uncovered about my own resistance to getting our house in order. Then we will walk through 4 simple steps to help you uncover what's really going on, so you can finally take action on the thing you know would make your life better.
Procrastination vs. ResistanceSometimes we think we're just putting something off, but there's an underlying reason we don't want to do it. That reason often shows up as doubt, stopping halfway, or thinking we won't finish. The real cause is usually one of three things:
- A lack of clarity: you can't see the path forward or what the finish line looks like, so it feels easier to avoid.
- A fear: fear of failing, fear of letting go, or even a fear you inherited without realizing it.
- A feeling: an emotion tied to the task, like sadness, anger or guilt.
- Ask why until you hit the real answer. Keep peeling back the layers. It could be seven layers deep, and if you think you've hit the answer but part of you says it might be deeper, keep going.
- Name what's missing. Is it a system, a plan, support, or permission? Sometimes you need all of them.
- Shrink it to one small step. Not the whole project, just one thing you can do this week.
- Change the thought behind it. Once you know the why, reframe what you're telling yourself, and the resistance starts to loosen.
- Teal Swan on why resistance always has a reason
- Chip Heath on how resistance is often a lack of clarity
- Brendan Burchard on the long-term cost of avoidance
- Robert Conklin on changing the thought that creates resistance
- Robin Sharma on how the thing you're avoiding may hold your biggest opportunity
You are not a failure, mama. You may just be missing clarity, a plan, or support. And the thing you're avoiding might be your biggest opportunity. Even if there's fear behind it, remember that you don't know how it will turn out, and what if it turns out better than you imagined?
