00:00:00
Speaker 1: All right, but tip to feel you all.
00:00:04
Speaker 2: To talk, that's all.
00:00:06
Speaker 3: Today is Wednesday, September eighteenth, and the Yankees were back in Seattle to take on the Mariners in game two of a three game set. With a win, they would clinch a playoff. Birth my recap, your reactions coming up next. This is Pinstripe Territory. Welcome who we got neil, y'all sit Stripe Territory?
00:00:28
Speaker 1: Just really up?
00:00:30
Speaker 4: Pull me back, all right, Welcome back, everybody, Welcome back.
00:00:40
Speaker 3: Game one fifty two is in the books. Just ten games to go in the twenty twenty four season, and the Yankees are officially headed to the playoffs. They have punched their ticket TK. This has been a wild season. H and also Orioles lost. How you feeling feeling pretty good?
00:01:04
Speaker 1: Five games up? I'll be feeling even better when Clay Holmes is no longer a Yankee because he will be a free agent and there's no chance that the Yankees will be bringing him back. I don't think he gets dfaid. Kimberle got dfaied today, I believe because he's had a rough year. But Holmes will not be a Yankee next season, and I'll feel much better when that happens.
00:01:23
Speaker 3: He's taking years off my life. For the people who like this podcast, and we're planning to watch for many, many decades, You've got a few less years of podcasting now because Clay Holmes is killing me. He's taking years off of my life. Really good start for Nestor Cortes tonight, and for the past several starts, he has looked like that twenty twenty two version of Nestor Cortez, who had about a two point four to four era. Not much offense for the Yankees tonight, just three hits. They had two hits in the first nine innings, they had won an extra inning, big big double from Anthony Rizzo, and then Volpi back in the lineup. Did not look good. We'll talk more about that. We'll talk a little bit about Spencer Jones. But TK you know one thing they never mentioned on the broadcast. When the Yankees are in Seattle. They always talk about the city. They talk about the ski resorts, they talk about the harbor and the music, but they never talk about the disproportionate number of serial killers from Seattle. Think about it. Ted Bundy, one of the goats as far as serial killers are concerned Green River killer Gary Ridgeway, the one of the Beltway sniper guys. Dangerous place apparently, Man, why do you think that there's so many deviant psychopaths in Seattle? Is it the rain? The constant rain is at the proximity to dump sites? What is it? Man?
00:02:39
Speaker 1: Well, I mean I've actually been to Seattle. I've been to the ballpark as well. It's really nice. But maybe it's all all that caffeine, man, from the coffee I've seen there. It is the fun hat. I've seen the original Starbucks in Seattle. But I was thinking, you know what it is, there are so many national parks in close proximity, and if you look at a map of missing missing people and now national parks, there is a scary parallel right there. So maybe that's what it is.
00:03:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, let's talk a little bit on Neester Cortez because he was essential in this victory. They mentioned this on the broadcast. But he seems to be throwing a little bit harder lately. I don't know if he's angry, I don't know if he's ticked off, but he's reaching back and getting a little bit extra. Six shutout innings in his and in his last seven games, including six starts in one relief, outing one point five to eight e ra a zero point nine zero whip. And I hope somebody's dumping Champagne on his little head right now elite numbers. He has really stepped up when we've needed him most. Somebody on Reddit said it's like when Mario and the Mario Brothers gets that flower lets Hi shoot fireballs. That's angry nestor. I thought that was great thoughts on Nester tonight, Dude, I think.
00:03:54
Speaker 1: It's more the Star where he's like a rainbow that you know what I'm talking about, inn Invincible, Invincible, the Invincible Star. I'm thinking to more of that. But yeah, that's awesome. I love that comparison. Somebody's got to make like a really bad graphic of that now. But yeah, he's been great last seven games, Like you said, really really good stats. I was actually thinking about this before. I didn't look up the stats. But since they skipped his spot in the rotation, he's he's pitching a little pissed off, it seems, and that's really uh really gotten in together with him. But it's funny with this team. Usually they're all about like really coddling the players. The Yankees have been doing that for this kind of whole Judge era since seventeen. But funny enough, they they kind of gave Glabor a little spanking and sat him down, and they skipped uh Nest in the rotation. So both of those guys kind of got a little bit of a more of a harsher reaction than the Yankees have given in recent years, and they've both responded really well. So maybe maybe you have a bunch of grown men on your team and they understand what's at stake and maybe just be I'm not gonna say it, be like a total like ass towards them, but maybe just be a little bit more firm.
00:05:05
Speaker 3: I don't know. Yeah, I mean, Glabor's played better since he got benched all that stuff. So hey, we got a couple of things that we got to talk about too before we get to everything else. How about Jay Rod having a little near death experience there in the ninth and then the extra inning. In the tenth inning, there was a strikeout, the bat went flying towards him. He had to run out of the way. Jazz is screaming throw the ball. The third base coach is saying get back Jay. Rod's confused for a second. He goes diving back. Wells nails him. So Weaver was great today. We didn't mention him in the opening there. He was tremendous again. He continues to be really really good. Ian Hamilton shutting things down and right now the Yankees are partying in the clubhouse. Nestor did not get win number ten. I was hoping he would get his tenth win. He would be ten and ten. But Clay Holmes, what do you what are you gonna do? I mean, the guy just thinks, yeah, he's awful, awful, I do. Yeah. Let's talk a little bit about uh Anthony Vopie here because Volpie was back in the lineup. He was not good. Banged into a double play his first to bat, he went oh for four, could not get a bunt down in the tenth inning and that was a big run, you know, if you get that runner over to third. He scores on the next at bat was just fly ball. So there's been a ton of heat on him lately via social media. Yankees universe feels like they're they're getting on him because of his offensive struggles. He's still a good defensive player. But I think a lot of people feel like we've been sold a bag of goods on Anthony Vopie. He's gonna be this stud, the superstar quick rise through the miners, and he's been given a lot more leashed than I think a lot of other Yankees who have more promising offensive ability have. Like I have no doubt in my mind that Piazza would be hitting better right now if he had been given the same amount of bats that Volpie has been given. And we know he's he was seen as the better defender of the two. So Volpi was kind of taken because of his good spring training. He out hit Braza in spring, but he's never really gotten it going. He had a couple of good months this year to open up the season. I think that was like peak Volpe's. That's the Vopee we all want to see. He was getting on base every day, he was dynamic out of the leadoff spot. But he's really been dreadful for the last few months, and I'm starting to feel like his ceiling is like an average player, Like he just doesn't have the offensive ability to, you know, be a consistent major league hitter at least not now. Defense sure been great, and that's, as Boone says, enormous, but offensively, he's just been a huge disappointment.
00:07:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I hear everything that you're saying. I think there's a lot of things going on here with Folpi. First of all, like you said, the bag of goods, we were kind of toll and sold as Yankee fans that this guy was going to be the future, the second coming of Derek Jeter, which, frankly, I thought that was always a little ridiculous saying that Derek Jeter is kind of a once in a generation player. But with Anthony Volte gold glove defense great, We're not even going to discuss that great. But I think what the Yankees have kind of sold to Yankee fans is the player that he was in the first like six weeks of the season. That's I think the player that they were expecting him to become, and that was the player that they were selling to us, because at the time when he was in the minor leagues, they said no to Castillo, they said no to signing Trey Turner or Corey Seeker, and Derek and I were discussing this in the green room, but Corey Seeker is a guy who's had an excellent three years in Texas. He won World Series MVP Lefty Swing. He averages a little over thirty home runs. There probably hits about forty and Yankee Stadium, but they are discussing moving positions with him. But that's, you know, regardless of the fact. I think Anthony Volpi at this point, I think he's starting to feel the heat a little bit. And I think that the Yankees may have bamboozled themselves by kind of buying into the storyline a little bit too much about local kid grew up a Yankee fan from the Tri State area. You know, all you want to do is be a Yankee. Kind of sound familiar, Derek Peter esk right when Really interestingly enough, I think it's the same draft. Correct me if I'm wrong, Derek. But they drafted vult in the first round and then Gunner Henderson went in the second round. Yes, exactly, Like who would you rather have as your shortstop right now? It's a no brainer. Now, if they picked Vulpi in the first round and they got Gunner Henderson in the second, great they probably would have went with Volti at second I think he profiles a little bit better at that position physically, but you know, at this point, yeah, you would have rather had Gunner Henderson. Now, I'm not ready to give up on Anthony Voltpi offensively. The defense is there, but I just think that there's still at a little bit too much to give up on. He's still really young. But I think Derek for me next year is like, show me something. If you don't show me something next year, I'm kind of just like, Okay, fine, you're a career two forty five hitter and you're gonna play good defense, you know what I mean. If you don't hit me like two seventy next year, then I I'm sorry. But like, we're heading in the wrong direction here, and I don't want to hear people say, oh, you know, he's young and give him time. I've said this before. If you're gonna be a phenom player, you're a phenom player immediately. Bobby Wood Junior kind of burst onto the scene. Juan Soto did it. De la Cruz with the Reds is kind of doing it right now. Paul Skeen's like these phenom guys, they're great as soon as they get up to the big leagues, they don't really have this kind of growth period, if you will. So and the guys, some guys, some guys do. Some guys are late bloomers. But I'm talking like the phenoms of phenoms. I feel like they're immediately kind of just there. And I feel like they've already ruined Parraza, they already.
00:10:56
Speaker 3: Ruined so Volpi now in his career two ninety two on base, which is just not good enough. And you know, he's taken a serious dip in power this year. He has raised his average from two oh nine to two forty five, So that's a big leap in average. But I mean he's just he's he's not doing much else. I mean, he's got a few more doubles, few more triples. He's only walked thirty eight times, so he's walked way less than last year. He walked fifty two times last year. I don't think he's gonna walk another, you know, fifteen times this year to pass that. So I don't blame anybody who's not feeling super excited about what we've seen from Volpi. Let's talk a little bit about Spencer Jones, our top prospect, hit a four hundred and fifty three foot home run. Yesterday. I have a little clip from JJ Cooper. This is another prospect that I feel like the Yankee should be a little bit alarmed about, at least Yankees fans. So this is JJ Cooper. He's one of the big prospect gurus in the world. He's with Baseball America and he had a little segment on Spencer Jones yesterday. It's about a minute long, So I'm gonna play it and then I want to get your reaction.
00:12:06
Speaker 5: It's an over thirty six percent strikeout rate this year. You cannot succeed in the big league. You do not succeed in the big leagues if you're striking out thirty six percent of the time in Double A. There's not a translation where you say, Okay, well, I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and it's going to work in the big leagues if you're already striking out that much in Double A. The key thing for him is is this is not a year he wants to repeat. He doesn't want to repeat Double A next year either. Obviously, this has to be kind of the step forward where next year, okay, some changes, some adjustments to make more contact, because that is a derailing flaw. If he can't fix it, it's you're hoping it's a one year kind of It was a derailment. You get the train back on the tracks, and you keep going down the down, you know, towards the journey. But right now, it's got to get better because there are just not examples of guys striking out at this rate who then go on to big league success without making improvement.
00:13:02
Speaker 3: So at Double A this year, two fifty nine, seventeen home runs, two hundred strikeouts, two hundred TK. So let me get your thoughts on Spencer Jones. I knew you were very high on him headed into the season.
00:13:18
Speaker 1: Any thoughts, I mean, I'm still high on and I just want to give you some context because I was looking at this before the show. But for for some context, and this has nothing to do with my argument. Aaron Judge in twenty fifteen between Double A and Triple A had approximately a thirty percent strikeout percentage just for frame of reference there, and we obviously know what Aaron Judge became. Thirty six percent. Yeah, it is absolutely way too high. Now I've watched him play a little bit. He has a very uppercut swing. And the reason why you have to compare him to Judge is they're both really tall, really tall outfielders. It's kind of a lefty air and Judge in that way. And I'm not saying he's going to become Aaron Judge. I certainly hope you will, but just in terms of the body, right, it's hard to be tall as a baseball player, I think, especially if you're not a pitcher. But he hits nukes when he gets a hold of them. But yeah, he has a very uppercut swing. Now, Aaron Judge has just got to be like, listen, man, we're gonna go to California. We're gonna go see my guy. You're gonna lock You're gonna be locked in his hitting cage for four months and we're gonna just work on it. Frankly, I don't know what the Yankees are doing. Just hire him at this point, just get the whole team there.
00:14:27
Speaker 6: Uh.
00:14:27
Speaker 1: But I really think that he's got tools that you can work with. I think you can definitely fix a lot of that. You can definitely get the strikeout rate, you know what for a goal for him, Let's let's try to see the strikeout rate at twenty five percent, can we make that an achievable goal. It's a big jump, I feel like, from thirty six to twenty five, but twenty five percent I think would make him a successful prospect with a legitimate chance to succeed in the major leagues. We've talked about the speed guy is lightning. I really would like to see him in center field with Jason and left He obviously had that blunder tonight. I think Jason probably profiles better as a left fielder and Yankees ate him rather than a centerfielder. And you put Jones in center and then the lefty swing would just be sweet. Right, So get him in Aaron Judges guru guy, and just fix him and it'll be fine.
00:15:18
Speaker 3: He teach your man, Teach your man. Yeah. One of the things he did with Aaron Judge between the twenty sixteen season when he came up and hit like one seventy over the final two months, and the twenty seventeen season where he really should have been MVP. He has fifty two home runs and his career basically changed to that. Yeah, was that he got into much more of a crouch like if you watch his twenty sixteen at bats. He's very tall, right, and that's kind of what Spencer Jones is. If you look at him in the box, he's standing straight up and that means you've got an enormous strike zone, right, And with as hard as guys throw today, I just don't know if it's physically possible to cover that much space in that little amount of time. So what he needs to do is crouch. He needs to get into a shorter crouch, eliminate the size of his zone and pick out more spots, and I think that will help him a little bit. So we're gonna have a quick word from the Foul Territory squad about tonight's sponsor, Nevage. This is a contraption that helps you if you've got lots of nasal congestion. 00:17:57
Speaker 3: All right, let's go, let's get it going. All right, you know what just happened, TK, I just lost the game. I just lost the game. Are you familiar with the game?
00:18:09
Speaker 1: With the game?
00:18:10
Speaker 3: All right, So if you don't know the game, I'm gonna tell you the game, and the audience is gonna know the game. I'm sure a lot of you play it. You are now playing the game, Okay. You can never win the game. You can only be winning the game. Anytime you think of the game, you lose and you have to tell whoever's in your presence that you just lost the game and then explain the game if they don't know what it is. So you're now playing the game whenever you think about it. Me and my friend we've been playing this for like twenty five years, so like every once in a while we'll just have some kind of a weird thing where we lose and we'll tell each other in the creative way. And my friend he sent me a package that was the remember the TV show Lost. It was a board game and it was called Lost the Game, and so I opened it up and it made me lose the game. And I was just glancing at it during the commercial there, and I lost the game. So anyway, I love and a lot of people are pissed off because they play the game and and they just lost the game. So a Rothman just lost the game. Remouses haven't lost the game. And so long, you were doing so well, you were doing so well, but guess what, you lost the game. All right, all right, let's recap this one and then we'll give away the belt.
00:19:24
Speaker 2: Here.
00:19:25
Speaker 3: Yankees got on the board in the top of the second inning. Really fantastic at bat from Jason Dimingez to eyeball some close pitches and draw a walk. He then stole second base, advanced a third on a bad throw, and then Rizzo knocked him in with a base it. You know what, that's how you manufacture runs, baby, and Domingos continues to have grated bats, and Rizzo actually had two RBIs. He actually had our RBI double two. Let me just add that to the notes here. And he had some great defense today. So a really good day for Anthony Rizzo. Bottom half was not so pretty friend to me. Yes, oh man, this one was a beauty long flyball to center field and he got under it. He was camped. I thought he was getting ready to catch it, and then the ball lands like ten feet behind him. I think he just lost it in the twilight. I used to play the outfield, and I played the outfield for a long time, and look, sometimes when you're in that twilight zone, twilight zone between like you know, daytime and when it gets really dark, somebody hits a really high flyball just looks like a little gray speck, right, especially if it gets above the lights. And it did have a ninety nine percent catch probability, but that's a rookie mistake.
00:20:41
Speaker 1: I have a couple of things there. First of all, I thought it was gone. Off of I thought it was gone, and I think probably Martian thought it was also gone. But like I said, I've been to that ballpark and I had pretty good seats, so I was pretty close to the field. Because of the way the roof is that it slides over. I swear to God that ball went over the roof, lost out of the lights. I'm serious. The way the roof is set up in that park if the park is open, I think it kind of kind of messes you up judging the ball in the outfield. But yeah, I think just he overran it. That's it. Rooky mistake chocking up as that.
00:21:13
Speaker 3: Well Actually, the very next batter this didn't get talked about. The very next batter popped it up towards first base and Austin Wells got it and he couldn't see it. He couldn't see it above you know. Once he got above the lights. Anthony Rizzo ended up tracking down made a catch. Nice job by Nester Cortez to pitch out of the you know jam with the runner on second base. It should have never been there. Another great pick by Rizzo in the bottom of the third to save Jazz from an error at third base. He was a picking machine tonight and Jazz has a great arm, but he has not been very accurate on his throes from third. Do you think he's gonna stick at thirty? You think he might stay at second base next year?
00:21:51
Speaker 1: No? I think they moved him in a second I think that more natural position. But honestly, hell of an athlete to never play third in a professional game, until, of course, the New York Yankees. Of course, the New York Yankees, they're smarter than everybody. They're gonna put a guy at the third who's never played third base. But he's made them look pretty good because he's made some sparkler plays over there. But yeah, he's a little inaccurate with his throws across the diamond. I think he profiles better as the second baseman, and I like his speed better in the middle of the field. And then they'll figure out third base. I don't know what they'll do at third. Maybe as Waldo will play third, maybe Paraza or I guess it can Orbit play third or somebody like that. But I think Jazz ends up at second next year.
00:22:29
Speaker 3: Apparently Jazz Chisholm is live streaming right now. Let me let me see. If you're in the.
00:22:33
Speaker 1: Clubhouse, they're like, yeah, they're probably going crazy. He's probably got the like nineties cam quarter out right now too, Like you see those videos that he was doing.
00:22:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't see it on Twitter. I guess it might must be on YouTube. But anyway, thank you for such I probably shouldn't advertise another stream while I'm live, but Nestor was done after six fantastic innings, four hits, allowed, three walks, no run, six strikeouts. You know, uh, let's not leave all in the regular season. Let's save from some for the postseason. But really, great job from Nestor Cortez. Tonight, Tommy Kinley came in, got a couple of outs, Clay Holmes relieved him and got out of the inning. Umpire was squeezing him. I thought he threw you know, five or six pitches that were strikes in that bad and a few of them got called balls. Umpiring tonight was just just trash in general. Bottom eight Yankees hadn't had a blown save in a while. So Clay Holmes did you know, you know, took care of that. Served up a solo home run to Justin Turner, thirteenth blown save of the season for Clay Holmes. He is a travesty man. He cannot be on the postseason roster. He cannot be near the postseason roster. I don't even want him reading the postseason roster. I just go home, just leave him in Seattle. You know, look, I'm just I'm over him. The Orioles dfa Kimberl. Yankees should DFA Holmes. He is not reliable. He's gonna be a free agent. They'll never do it. But if I were the GM, I would absolutely leave him in Seattle. Luke Weaver throw the ball really, really well in the eighth and ninth. Today, Yankees took the lead in the tenth RBI double by Anthony Rizzo could have been more, but Volte popped out on a bunt attempt that would have got the runner over and the next batter hit a sackfly, so missed opportunity. There bottom ten Ian Hamilton in the game. He gave up the leadoff single. Jay Rod got to third base, and then jay Rod had a near death experience. There was a wicked strikeout, bat went flying jay Rod. He gets off a third base, he loses track, he loses his mind for a second. Everybody's screaming at him to get back. Jazz are screaming for the ball. Wells throws it down and nails him at third. Really dumb bas running by the Mariners in this series, but it worked out. Yankees win, and guess what They're headed to the playoffs.
00:24:55
Speaker 1: Time in October of the Bronx singular experience ever experienced it.
00:25:04
Speaker 3: We can't hear you over that music. But oh well, it's all right. You're you're still a newbie. I do the summer night, I do the night here. It's all good. So we we thought about the belt, you know, we we thought, listen, we gotta maybe even reconsider this because I had forgotten that Rizzo had that other RBI double. You know, I'll let you make the final call, man, but uh, I kind of feel like there's any of the options that we go with would work. So you go ahead make the call, and I'll make the adjustment here.
00:25:38
Speaker 1: Well, can I can I change to what we have already originally agreed to.
00:25:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, do what you want?
00:25:45
Speaker 1: Unique, all right, So usually the graphic is set up. We originally went with Nestor for the belt, and that's what we were gonna go with, as Rizzo as an honorable mention. But honestly, Rizzo had an enormous impact on the game. Obviously the game winning hit, some great scoops in the field that really killed some rallies for the Mariners. I think he's just as deserving, and I'm kind of feeling like we can't really go with col belt. I wish there was a way you could pull it where you could let the let the fans vote, because there.
00:26:14
Speaker 3: Is there is. We we used to do that all the time. But yeah, I saw I stopped. I just don't have the bandwidth to during the game, and sometimes it changes so late, and sometimes it's a late decision right now, so screw it, We're going Rizzo.
00:26:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go. We're going on the chat, felt Rizzo, and I could I could feel him. I could feel him, Yeah, but never very close. Second.
00:26:39
Speaker 3: Well's got some love too for that throwdown to third base. Luke Weaver was a real candidate with his pitching.
00:26:49
Speaker 1: But sorry, I just saw Richard give the belt to Homes.
00:26:52
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, give him whatever. The opposite of the belt is give him the belt like you know, hitting him on the hand. So yeah, that's that. We should break that out next year, just have it be like a like a yeah, yeah, I'm sure we could have AI come up with some fun images for that one. Lou Godbar says, no Stra Derek predicted six K's tonight, so that is a hit. So Nostra Derek with the prediction again, So thank you guys for watching. I hope, I hope you won millions of dollars with that bet. I was actually FRANCESSA. His prediction was five, and I was like, I think he'll do better than That's why I chose six.
00:27:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, but uh, Francesco is a hack.
00:27:38
Speaker 3: Oh, I love FRANCESSA. Don't don't be shitting on my man, francess If fuck you.
00:27:43
Speaker 1: All right, I'm a K show guy. But yeah, they had a little beef back in the day. But it's fine, all.
00:27:51
Speaker 3: Right, all right, ladies and gentlemen. Yankees are headed to the playoffs. We're gonna wrap it up here one eighteen on a Thursday, and the Yankees now lead the American League East by five games. Orioles have really flushed it down the toilet over the last uh, you know, a couple of months here. But TK any final thoughts here as we approach the postseason, now ten games left.
00:28:16
Speaker 1: How about for the Anti Belt the sun gets sent to the sun?
00:28:20
Speaker 3: Yeah, get launched into the sun.
00:28:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, get launched into the sun. And then you could do like a song with that. I'm sure there's something that would go well with it or something, but yeah, see him.
00:28:30
Speaker 3: Says, give him the boot, not the belt.
00:28:32
Speaker 1: I like it, and I like it exactly.
00:28:34
Speaker 3: Uh and five fo says we were closer next year. We were talking about that in the green room. We got it. You gotta do it. He's already under contract. He's uh, he's pretty much their best relief pitcher at this point. He's making a name for himself here down the stretch. I think he's gonna have some big postseason moments. He's got that moxy that you like.
00:28:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, Derek and I were talking about I say, he's got the cubes for it. He's got the cubes. The closer. He's a psycho on the mound, that's what you want to see. He's like screaming and all that after he gets a big strikeout. And we were staying in the green room. I'm really digging this Hamilton Weaver back end of the bullpen kind of thing they got going on. And it's funny how they kind of became strikeout guys as the season's going on. It almost feels like they're throwing harder towards the end of the season, right like ninety eight, ninety seven. Yeah, definitely gotta go with Weaver. They're gonna pick up his two and a half million dollar club option, and he's gonna be the closer next year, and Hamilton might be the eighth inning guy. And that's probably the direction I go.
00:29:25

Then we'll be back in about sixty seconds to break down the game give away the belt. We had a lot of debate about the belt tonight and we'll go from there, but stick around.
