# Embracing Failure: Lessons from an Entrepreneur's Journey
> Johannes shares his entrepreneurial failures and what they taught him about success.
Johannes joined the show to discuss the inevitable failures that come with entrepreneurship and the invaluable lessons learned from them. He candidly shared three major failures from his career, emphasizing that **you often learn more from failure than success**.
## The Value of Failure
Johannes recounted his early success in his twenties, which led him to believe that entrepreneurship was straightforward. However, he faced a harsh reality over the next fifteen years, experiencing three significant failures:
1. **Product Market Fit:** His venture with Huawei aimed at monetizing Wi-Fi in Amsterdam Arena flopped because users viewed Wi-Fi as a basic utility rather than a paid service.
2. **Founder Friction:** Tensions among co-founders created barriers to progress, compounded by difficulties in securing funding in Europe.
3. **Unforeseen Circumstances:** A co-founder’s mental health crisis added unpredictable challenges to the startup.
Johannes stressed the importance of having a solid team and a clear product-market fit. He has since chosen co-founders he has known for a decade, illustrating the significance of trust and shared vision.

## The Madness of Risk
Ari humorously pointed out that the entrepreneurial journey requires a certain level of insanity, particularly regarding risk tolerance. Johannes elaborated on his own experiences:
- He took substantial risks, moving back to his parents’ house while raising two children to pursue his dream.
- He raised significant funds while living with little more than a mattress on the floor, demonstrating a willingness to face discomfort for the chance to succeed.
Johannes reflected on the alternative to entrepreneurship: a corporate environment filled with competition and micromanagement. He believes that the drive to build and innovate outweighs the fear of failure.
## Finding the Right Problem and Team
Johannes believes that successful startups often tackle hard problems that other companies overlook. He shared his philosophy:
- **Team Matters Most:** His experience showed that the founding team’s capabilities and endurance are critical to navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
- **Problem-Driven Focus:** It’s essential to work on valuable, complex problems rather than just jumping to a solution.
Ari highlighted the importance of addressing genuine pain points in the market, reinforcing Johannes's belief that understanding the problem is pivotal to startup success.
## A Path Forward
Johannes’s journey through failure and risk reveals a broader truth about entrepreneurship: it’s a long, often painful path filled with lessons. Yet, the desire to create and innovate propels many to continue despite setbacks.
As Johannes said, **"If this one goes well, then I'll be batting fifty percent. So three and three, which would be good."**
His experiences remind us that resilience and adaptability are crucial traits for anyone on the entrepreneurial path.
