À PROPOS DE CET ÉPISODE
Dracula wasn’t born in a castle, and he definitely wasn’t born sparkling. We start with the real-world roots of the myth in Vlad the Impaler, then follow the vampire story as it migrates through European folklore, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and the film versions that lock the character into our collective brain. Along the way, we call out the weird details that make this legend stick, from “vampire panic” misunderstandings about decomposition to the way blood becomes a shortcut for fear, desire, and danger.
Then we make it personal and very Gen X. The late 70s, 80s, and 90s don’t give us one Dracula, they give us a whole vampire food court: comedy, horror, romance, cartoons, and cult classics. We talk Love at First Bite, Count Von Count somehow becoming a kid’s first Dracula, and why the 80s are the undefeated decade for cool vampires with swagger. From Fright Night to Once Bitten to The Lost Boys, vampires stop being dusty aristocrats and become stylish outsiders with soundtracks, trauma, and attitude.
The 90s flip the genre again by making vampires romantic and tragic. We get into Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and how it ties the Vlad connection into a love story, then zoom out to Anne Rice’s huge influence on modern vampire fiction. We also hit TV staples like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the pop culture moment when everyone knows the rules well enough to parody them. We wrap by mapping the major vampire archetypes, including Blade’s action makeover, and we land on the real reason Dracula survives: every generation builds the version it needs.

00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:14.400
Seeing these dreams, thinking on screens, it was all bad.
00:00:24.559 --> 00:00:27.440
We'll take you back like whatever.

Welcome to Like Whatever, a podcast for, by, and about Gen X.
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:39.759
I'm Nicole, and this is my BFFF Heather.
00:00:40.640 --> 00:00:41.280
Hello.

So let's see here.
00:00:45.520 --> 00:00:49.679
On the way down, um, I heard Israel's elections have wrapped up.
00:00:50.079 --> 00:00:51.039
That was today.
00:00:51.200 --> 00:00:56.000
It does not look like not Netanyahu is going to win about that.
00:00:56.399 --> 00:01:00.640
So hopefully that will bring some sort of positive change to the world.
00:01:00.880 --> 00:01:07.200
I just read just uh about 20 minutes ago that they have linked Ted Bundy to another murder.
00:01:07.519 --> 00:01:08.000
What?
00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:09.680
In Utah.
00:01:10.879 --> 00:01:11.359
Utah.
00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:12.079
Love it.
00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:12.560
Love it.
00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:13.120
Love it.
00:01:13.760 --> 00:01:13.920
Okay.
00:01:14.159 --> 00:01:16.719
Now they'll put a whole bunch more specials out about it.
00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:26.079
We also want to wish Christine and Pat.
00:01:26.239 --> 00:01:27.200
Congratulations.
00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:29.359
Yes, congratulations.
00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:31.280
Wedding bells this weekend.
00:01:31.439 --> 00:01:31.840
Yes.
00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:32.560
Lovely.
00:01:32.879 --> 00:01:34.079
Everyone was lovely.
00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:36.400
Yeah, the bride was absolutely stunning.
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:36.879
Yes.
00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:38.239
And the groom was all right.
00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:38.480
Yeah.
00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:39.200
I'm just kidding.
00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:41.040
He looked fantastic too.
00:01:43.920 --> 00:01:46.879
But yes, we are super, super happy for them.
00:01:47.040 --> 00:01:47.680
Yes, we are.
00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:48.319
Yeah.
00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:49.760
Very cool.
00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:51.280
Let's see.
00:01:51.599 --> 00:01:51.920
Oh.
00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:56.959
I was gonna text you this when I was watching it, but I was like, no, I'm gonna wait and tell her in person.
00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:03.599
I was watching Killer Couples, um, and it was Amish.
00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:06.640
Oh my God.
00:02:08.719 --> 00:02:12.240
The Amish, the wife died, the Amish wife died.
00:02:12.400 --> 00:02:20.080
Uh, they start looking into things, and the Amish husband is on numerous dating apps on his cell phone.
00:02:20.240 --> 00:02:20.560
Okay.
00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:23.680
I'm out already.
00:02:25.439 --> 00:02:26.879
I'm already out.
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:30.639
So he had this girlfriend, she was a Mennonite.
00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:32.560
They're even worse.
00:02:34.080 --> 00:02:38.879
And he brainwashed her into killing his wife.
00:02:39.360 --> 00:02:40.960
Um probably not hard.
00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:41.759
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:43.199
Probably didn't have to try too hard.
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:46.879
Yeah, but his uh dating app name was Amish Stud.
00:02:50.400 --> 00:02:56.240
Oh I don't know if I've mentioned my dislike of the Amish people here.
00:02:56.800 --> 00:02:59.520
I do not care for Amish people.
00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:02.719
I was laughing so hard through this show, it just cracked me up.
00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:05.759
But he convinced the the Mennonite to murder.
00:03:06.240 --> 00:03:07.919
They're even worse, the Mennonites.
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:08.560
He wanted them.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:14.719
They wanted to be together and he couldn't divorce his wife, but murder was okay.
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:19.120
Which just goes to show people aren't actually following their religion.
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:20.240
Let me tell you something.
00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:23.759
The Amish are kings and queens of the fucking loophole.
00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:25.280
So that's how they get around.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:33.199
I don't even want to talk about the fucking Amish loopholes because it is the most infuriating thing ever.
00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:35.280
Well, he did go to jail.
00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:38.800
But but he got to live with electricity.
00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:39.759
And a cell phone.
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:42.000
And a cell phone dating apps.
00:03:43.840 --> 00:03:44.560
I don't even think.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:48.800
He was posting shirtless pictures like with the charger trail going down.
00:03:49.280 --> 00:03:51.840
Oh my god, I can't even get the fucking Amish boots.
00:03:51.919 --> 00:03:52.159
I can't.
00:03:54.159 --> 00:03:55.360
I can't take the Amish.
00:03:55.439 --> 00:03:56.000
I just can't.
00:03:56.159 --> 00:03:57.360
They're not listening, probably.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:03:57.840
I don't know.
00:03:57.919 --> 00:03:59.759
They might be because they have Amish loopholes.
00:03:59.919 --> 00:04:00.319
Probably.
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:06.159
So most I just they aggravate me to no end.
00:04:08.080 --> 00:04:09.439
I can't be cracking up.
00:04:09.680 --> 00:04:12.800
I can't be anywhere near them when I see them.
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:14.560
I saw them this summer.
00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:15.599
I don't care.
00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:19.680
You can call me anti-well, I am anti-Amish.
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:21.040
And I don't care.
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:22.319
Who knows it?
00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:24.879
They are just a bothersome people.
00:04:25.120 --> 00:04:31.759
Well, and the other thing was they had Amish people on there that they were interviewing, you know, like family members and such, dressed as Amish.
00:04:31.839 --> 00:04:32.000
Yeah.
00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:32.639
Loopholes.
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:34.639
Aren't they not supposed to be on camera?
00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:38.319
I remember you weren't even supposed to take their pictures if you were up there.
00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:40.560
They find fucking loopholes everywhere.
00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:41.600
Why are they in Walmart?
00:04:41.680 --> 00:04:43.040
They shouldn't be in fucking Walmart.
00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:44.399
I saw some at the beach this year.
00:04:44.480 --> 00:04:45.360
What are you doing at the beach?
00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:45.759
You should.
00:04:45.920 --> 00:04:49.279
I saw some, no joke, at the fucking water park.
00:04:49.519 --> 00:04:50.800
What are you doing at the water park?
00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:51.120
Yeah.
00:04:51.279 --> 00:04:52.160
In their ankle length?
00:04:52.399 --> 00:04:52.959
Yes.
00:04:53.519 --> 00:04:54.560
Get out of the water park.
00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:55.519
You're gonna drown in that.
00:04:56.079 --> 00:04:56.480
Stop it.
00:04:56.639 --> 00:04:57.680
Just fucking stop.
00:04:57.759 --> 00:04:58.399
Just no.
00:04:58.560 --> 00:04:59.759
It's a hard no for me.
00:04:59.920 --> 00:05:00.399
You cannot.
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:03.519
Go turn on your hose and put your thumb over it and you guys can run through.
00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:05.680
Go run through sprinklers or something.
00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:06.480
That's no.
00:05:06.639 --> 00:05:07.680
It's a no for me.
00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:10.399
You cannot be at a water park.
00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:15.920
I don't care what your loop is, I don't care how big the loophole is that you are trying to make here.
00:05:16.079 --> 00:05:17.040
It's a no.
00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:19.519
Ugh.
00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:20.399
I know.
00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:28.560
I mean, I sat there for a good just set staring at and you the look on my face had to be like, this is fucking despicable.
00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:32.639
Like I just had anger in my soul.
00:05:33.839 --> 00:05:36.079
I was like, this is just wrong.
00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:36.959
Yeah.
00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:39.519
That's probably gonna be what happens to me when I die.
00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:41.839
My hell is I'm gonna have to go live with the Amish.
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:42.800
Oh my gosh.
00:05:42.959 --> 00:05:43.759
That would be awful.
00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:44.639
That would be awful.
00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:48.079
I will find Jesus if that's what happens.
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:51.120
That's what has to happen for me to get away from the Amish.
00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:55.680
I will, I will look for him and I will find him.
00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:57.759
I will apologize.
00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:02.000
Oh Lord God.
00:06:02.560 --> 00:06:03.680
I hate I hate him.
00:06:03.839 --> 00:06:04.639
I know you do.
00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:05.600
I know you do.
00:06:05.759 --> 00:06:06.879
I was just like, wow.
00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:07.360
I know.
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:11.920
And people think it's like everybody the first time they hear it from me, they're like, what?
00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:13.600
Like they're so nice.
00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:14.240
Yeah, they're not.
00:06:14.399 --> 00:06:15.439
And they make bake goods.
00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:16.480
They're not nice.
00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:17.360
And that's what happens.
00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:18.639
You know what they put in there?
00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:22.319
They put that, you eat that shit, and you're like, oh, they're not so bad.
00:06:22.399 --> 00:06:23.040
Yeah.
00:06:23.680 --> 00:06:27.519
They're poisoning you to make you think they're not so bad.
00:06:28.160 --> 00:06:28.720
Mm-hmm.
00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:29.199
Mm-hmm.
00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:30.720
It's all part of their plan.
00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:34.319
I don't go to Lancaster for this exact reason.
00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:37.600
I've been to Lancaster approximately twice in my life.
00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:38.000
Yeah.
00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:39.439
And I will not go again.
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:40.000
No.
00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:41.199
Fuck that.
00:06:41.360 --> 00:06:41.600
No.
00:06:41.839 --> 00:06:43.439
You don't even want to go out to Westover.
00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:43.839
No.
00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:46.079
Nowhere where there's Amish people.
00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:48.879
Do not want to be around Amish people.
00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:52.480
And I don't want them in my space either.
00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:53.279
Yeah.
00:06:54.480 --> 00:06:55.839
They're not allowed in my space.
00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:58.399
My space is the 21st century.
00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:00.879
And you're loud and proud about it.
00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:05.040
You're not out trying to find all these noise to sneak around.
00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:05.759
Nope.
00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.720
I have the brand newest Samsung.
00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:15.279
Oh, speaking of phones, you see the iPhone fold is breaking already.
00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:18.800
Here's the thing about well, because it was made by Samsung.
00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:21.199
It's just a Samsung phone with an Apple on it.
00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:23.199
But people have only had it a week and it's breaking.
00:07:23.439 --> 00:07:30.560
Yeah, because Samsung was like they'd sent their cheap seconds to Apple.
00:07:31.600 --> 00:07:33.279
They were like, Yeah, you want it to fold?
00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:33.600
Okay.
00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.240
It's a$2,000 phone.
00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:38.000
It's insane.
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:42.319
And people are they're just opening it and they're like, I heard a pop and I look down at my.
00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:48.480
And then they're acting like it's like, oh when I saw it come out, I was like, you have got to be fucking kidding me.
00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:55.600
Because the way that every Apple's like, oh, this new invent, this new invention, Samsung has had it for like five years now.
00:07:55.759 --> 00:07:56.000
Yeah.
00:07:56.160 --> 00:07:57.199
I even know people that have them.
00:07:57.519 --> 00:07:57.920
Yes.
00:07:58.160 --> 00:07:59.680
I know lots of people that have them.
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:01.839
I don't because it's a stupid idea.
00:08:02.480 --> 00:08:04.000
And it's going to break.
00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:04.879
Yeah.
00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:07.839
I want to sing that big up by a tablet.
00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:08.480
A tablet.
00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:11.360
You want you are it's getting me riled up today.
00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:14.560
Rile Heather up day.
00:08:14.800 --> 00:08:15.680
I guess.
00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:18.160
I already got riled up earlier.
00:08:18.399 --> 00:08:19.040
Yeah, I know.
00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:20.560
My job is stupid.
00:08:20.720 --> 00:08:21.120
Yeah.
00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:21.920
Yeah.
00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:28.399
Speaking of jobs being stupid, I gave myself a five-day staycation this week.
00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:28.720
Oh.
00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:31.040
Because we're off Tuesday for election day.
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:31.439
Right.
00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:34.000
And so I took Friday and Monday off.
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:37.120
And then I only had to use two days to have a five-day week.
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:38.240
And I I know.
00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:39.440
That's smart thinking.
00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:41.519
I'm just gonna stay home and do nothing for five days.
00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:43.039
I love that idea.
00:08:43.919 --> 00:08:44.799
I do too.
00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:46.159
I was like, man, I need a break.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:48.240
I know I can't afford to go on vacation.
00:08:48.480 --> 00:08:51.919
I need to take a vacation because my time is stacking up.
00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:53.360
Um we only get the rollover.
00:08:54.240 --> 00:08:54.559
Yeah.
00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:58.559
But I don't think I have enough to lose yet.
00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:00.320
But next year I will.
00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:02.399
So I will have to use up some of my time.
00:09:02.559 --> 00:09:04.879
You'll never have use or lose.
00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:05.840
I will.
00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:08.960
Especially in like utilize my vacation days.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:14.240
I think we get three weeks, and then in like maybe two or three more years, I get five weeks.
00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:16.879
And I'll never use five weeks of vacation.
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:17.679
You won't.
00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:18.000
No.
00:09:18.559 --> 00:09:19.279
It's wasted on you.
00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:19.840
It is way.
00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:21.600
I don't know why they won't just pay it out.
00:09:21.759 --> 00:09:23.759
When I worked at FedEx, they paid it out.
00:09:24.639 --> 00:09:26.000
Yeah, it's stupid.
00:09:26.320 --> 00:09:27.360
Just pay it out.
00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:29.039
Apparently you can.
00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:30.559
There's ways.
00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:32.080
There's loopholes.
00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:34.320
Amish must have come up with this.
00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:38.879
I'm not gonna go into that now that I just went out and ran about my Amish loopholes.
00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:43.039
I'm not gonna go on and ran about the postal services loopholes.
00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:48.240
Well, they're not gonna pay you out because then when you don't use it, that's just right.
00:09:48.399 --> 00:09:50.480
They don't have it's just money they don't have to spend.
00:09:50.639 --> 00:09:51.200
That is true.
00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:52.639
I don't care about you.
00:09:52.879 --> 00:09:53.840
They don't.
00:09:54.399 --> 00:09:55.440
Clearly.
00:09:55.840 --> 00:09:57.840
In the last two days, they don't.
00:09:59.840 --> 00:10:02.000
Or anybody in any office anywhere.
00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:07.039
Are you done?
00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:12.480
Rant over.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:12.960
Okay.
00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:19.679
Well, before we get started, if you're still with us at this point, like, share, rate, review.
00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:22.639
Please find us on all the socials at like whatever pod.
00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:23.519
Yeah.
00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:27.679
Um, we have a website, likewhateverpod.com.
00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:32.559
And you can email us at likewhateverpod at gmail.com.
00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:41.679
So Nicole reminded me that I dropped an Easter egg a couple weeks ago, but I'm not doing that this week because I forgot what this week was.
00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:43.200
I can't believe you forgot that.
00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:49.759
Well, it's not that I forgot, it's just that I didn't remember when I said it the last time that my week would be this.
00:10:49.919 --> 00:10:54.080
So I didn't forget it's Halloween.
00:10:54.320 --> 00:10:55.840
Happy Halloween, everybody.
00:10:56.080 --> 00:10:56.639
Yes.
00:10:56.879 --> 00:10:59.279
Um, I am going as Freddie Krueger.
00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:00.159
Ooh.
00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:01.440
I have my sweater.
00:11:01.600 --> 00:11:02.320
I love it.
00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:02.720
Yeah.
00:11:02.799 --> 00:11:06.639
I'm not gonna wear the the glove was cheap and shitty.
00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:08.639
Yeah, but you know, whatever.
00:11:08.720 --> 00:11:10.240
But I can't drive with it anyway.
00:11:10.320 --> 00:11:12.720
So now I'll be working on Halloween.
00:11:12.960 --> 00:11:14.559
So I'm just gonna wear the sweater.
00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:14.799
Yeah.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:17.200
And you're just gonna have to use your imagination.
00:11:17.440 --> 00:11:18.639
Well, you need the fedora.
00:11:18.720 --> 00:11:20.960
I have the fedora, but I look terrible in hats.
00:11:21.440 --> 00:11:22.799
Yeah, but it's a costume.
00:11:23.039 --> 00:11:23.679
True.
00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:24.480
I don't know.
00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:25.039
We'll see.
00:11:25.120 --> 00:11:26.720
I'll bring it, but I probably won't wear it.
00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:27.200
Okay.
00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:36.240
Anyway, so let's fuck around and find out about vampires.
00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:37.279
Ooh.
00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:46.159
Few historical figures have undergone a transformation as dramatic as Vlad III of Wallachie.
00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:49.840
Wallachia, better known to history as Vlad the Impaler.
00:11:50.320 --> 00:12:00.240
Born in the 15th century and feared for his brutality, Vlad would eventually be reborn in popular culture as Count Dracula, the world's most famous vampire.
00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:03.120
Yet Dracula is more than a literary character.
00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:04.720
He is a cultural phenomenon.
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:08.720
Every generation reinvents him according to its fears and fantasies.
00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:15.600
For baby boomers, it was Bella Lugosi's hypnotic aristocrat and Christopher Lee's terrifying predator.
00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.519
For Gen X, Dracula became something stranger.
00:12:19.600 --> 00:12:23.519
He was scary, sexy, funny, tragic, and sometimes educational.
00:12:24.159 --> 00:12:30.960
He appeared in horror films, comedies, Saturday morning television, cartoons, and even on the Sesame Street.
00:12:31.759 --> 00:12:35.919
So this is the story of how a medieval prince became an immortal icon.
00:12:36.320 --> 00:12:42.159
And I will, of course, be especially paying attention to the 80s and 90s.
00:12:46.960 --> 00:12:50.000
Dracula began not in a haunted castle but on a battlefield.
00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:56.399
Vlad III was born around 1431 in Transylvania, a region in modern-day Romania.
00:12:56.720 --> 00:13:06.639
His father, Vlad II, belonged to a military order known as the Order of the Dragon, created to defund Christian Europe against Ottoman expansion.
00:13:06.799 --> 00:13:11.120
Members of the order used the title Dracul, meaning dragon.
00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:16.240
Vlad became known as Dracula, which roughly translates to son of Dracul.
00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:17.600
Didn't I know that?
00:13:17.679 --> 00:13:18.240
Now you do.
00:13:18.399 --> 00:13:20.000
And what year was Vlad the Impeller?
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:21.279
1431.
00:13:21.440 --> 00:13:21.759
Okay.
00:13:22.559 --> 00:13:25.600
The 15th century was a violent period in Eastern Europe.
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:31.360
Kingdoms rose and fell, empires expanded, and rulers often survived through cruelty as much as diplomacy.
00:13:31.519 --> 00:13:36.960
Vlad's reputation was forged during his struggles against the Ottoman Empire and rival nobles.
00:13:37.360 --> 00:13:39.919
His preferred punishment became legendary.
00:13:40.240 --> 00:13:41.279
Impalement.
00:13:42.240 --> 00:13:45.840
It's also my preferred punishment.
00:13:47.200 --> 00:13:48.320
Impalement.
00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:52.399
Victims were placed on large wooden stakes and left to die publicly.
00:13:54.159 --> 00:13:58.559
Accounts from the period described forests of impaled enemies surrounding cities.
00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:04.159
I mean, nothing says more of like, hey, you should probably not come here than a bunch of dead bodies strung up on sticks.
00:14:04.399 --> 00:14:07.360
I would definitely be like, get a little U-turn.
00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:09.600
Maybe we should not go here.
00:14:12.159 --> 00:14:19.840
Some stories were undoubtedly exaggerated by political opponents, but even sympathetic historians acknowledge Vlad employed terror as a weapon.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:27.360
I mean, it's quite uh his cruelty earned cruelty earned him the nickname Vlad the Impaler.
00:14:27.600 --> 00:14:32.559
Ironically, none of the historical records suggest he drank blood or possessed supernatural powers.
00:14:32.720 --> 00:14:35.919
The vampire connection would not emerge until centuries later.
00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:40.879
Vlad died in battle sometime between 1476 and 1477.
00:14:41.200 --> 00:14:44.799
His reign ended, his legend was just beginning.
00:14:45.600 --> 00:14:51.840
Long before Bram Stoker wrote his famous novel, vampire stories existed throughout Europe.
00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:57.120
Ancient cultures told stories of spirits returning from the dead to drain the life from the living.
00:14:57.360 --> 00:15:04.960
In Eastern Europe, Pian folklore described creatures that rose from graves, spread disease, and preyed upon their families.
00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:10.799
Oh, can I just say for one second that I have been really enjoying the rest is history podcasts?
00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:26.320
I wanted to say this up top here recently because I enjoy hearing history from a different perspective that is not the American propaganda machine.
00:15:26.639 --> 00:15:26.960
Yeah.
00:15:28.159 --> 00:15:33.039
Um they did a like I just I don't listen to every episode, I just jump around once.
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:40.639
And so they had the founding fathers, they had Ben Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington.
00:15:40.720 --> 00:15:41.679
They did each one.
00:15:42.879 --> 00:15:51.840
And to hear the Revolutionary War told from the British side was a lot was eye-opening.
00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:57.440
Because of course, you know, it's rah-rah America go team, you know, over here.
00:15:57.519 --> 00:16:02.159
And like, but not really.
00:16:02.639 --> 00:16:03.440
Not really.
00:16:04.320 --> 00:16:09.039
And I mean, I guess, you know, somewhere in between their propaganda and our propaganda is the truth somewhere.
00:16:09.120 --> 00:16:19.120
I mean, I don't I'm not saying they're lying about it, but not so much we won the Revolutionary War so much as England didn't want to deal with it anymore.
00:16:19.360 --> 00:16:19.840
Yeah, yeah.
00:16:20.159 --> 00:16:20.879
They were just done.
00:16:21.039 --> 00:16:21.279
Yeah.
00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:23.120
So let's not set off.
00:16:23.600 --> 00:16:31.200
Before you move in or move on, I um meant to ask you, did you see what I sent you in Messenger about the couple and Smyrna?
00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:32.159
I did, I saw that.
00:16:32.320 --> 00:16:32.960
Did you read it?
00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:33.279
I did.
00:16:33.679 --> 00:16:36.159
I saw the um I saw the headline earlier.
00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:44.559
Yeah, they apparently they are this on Halloween, they are opening their home for people to come in and see all the human bones they've collected.
00:16:44.799 --> 00:16:46.000
Can you have one?
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:47.360
Do you get to take it?
00:16:47.440 --> 00:16:48.159
Can you steal one?
00:16:48.399 --> 00:16:51.039
Um well they give you one because there's souvenirs.
00:16:51.279 --> 00:16:52.720
Is there a souvenir shop?
00:16:53.279 --> 00:16:54.480
A goodie bag.
00:16:57.039 --> 00:16:57.840
I'm not sure.
00:16:57.919 --> 00:16:59.200
I didn't read that far into it.
00:16:59.360 --> 00:17:01.759
So I probably have to check it out.
00:17:02.960 --> 00:17:08.000
Yeah, but I thought that was a pretty good idea though to do that on Halloween.
00:17:08.319 --> 00:17:08.480
Yeah.
00:17:08.880 --> 00:17:14.319
If they give you um, if there's a souvenir shop at the end, I agree.
00:17:14.559 --> 00:17:16.240
If not, then I'm not going.
00:17:17.440 --> 00:17:20.000
Because I know how much a human skeleton costs.
00:17:20.480 --> 00:17:27.200
There's one for sale on one of my sites, and it's very tempting.
00:17:28.880 --> 00:17:34.640
I'm like, oh, if I took a loan out on my TSP, I could have it.
00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:39.039
But then I said no.
00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:40.960
Doesn't sound very responsible.
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:42.880
It's not at all.
00:17:44.640 --> 00:17:46.480
It's not even close.
00:17:47.039 --> 00:17:51.440
Because I carry around a human skeleton all the time with me.
00:17:51.920 --> 00:17:53.200
That's free.
00:17:57.599 --> 00:17:58.240
Anyway.
00:17:58.480 --> 00:17:58.799
Anyway.
00:17:59.039 --> 00:17:59.759
Back to Vlad.
00:18:00.079 --> 00:18:00.480
Yes.
00:18:00.640 --> 00:18:01.920
Uh no, I don't.
00:18:03.759 --> 00:18:10.240
In villages throughout Romania, Serbia, Hungary, and neighboring regions, people genuinely feared vampires.
00:18:10.400 --> 00:18:14.880
The 18th century even witnessed what historians now call vampire panics.
00:18:15.039 --> 00:18:22.400
When disease outbreaks occurred and people died unexpectedly, villagers sometimes exhumed bodies looking for evidence of vampirism.
00:18:22.799 --> 00:18:27.200
Natural decomposition often produced effects that seemed supernatural.
00:18:27.440 --> 00:18:33.839
Corpses appeared bloated, blood sometimes leaked from the mouth, hair and nails seemed to continue growing.
00:18:34.079 --> 00:18:38.880
To frighten communities, these looked like proof that the dead were feeding on the living.
00:18:39.440 --> 00:18:49.119
I mean, again, let's just blame something supernatural on a naturally occurring thing.
00:18:50.960 --> 00:18:51.920
Science.
00:18:59.599 --> 00:19:00.799
They had no king.
00:19:01.039 --> 00:19:02.960
That changed in 1897.
00:19:03.119 --> 00:19:09.920
Irish author Bram Stoker published Dracula, a gothic horror novel that forever changed vampire fiction.
00:19:10.240 --> 00:19:17.359
Stoker borrowed heavily from vampire folklore and discovered the name Dracula during his research into Romanian history.
00:19:17.599 --> 00:19:24.000
Historians continue debating how much he actually knew about Vlad the Impaler, but the name fascinated him.
00:19:24.160 --> 00:19:32.240
The novels Count Dracula is an ancient Transylvanian nobleman who survives by drinking blood and seeks to spread his influence into England.
00:19:32.400 --> 00:19:36.480
The book introduced many elements that still define vampire fiction.
00:19:36.720 --> 00:19:52.000
The aristocratic vampire, the castle in Transylvania, bats and wolves as symbols, the vampire hunter Van Helsing Van Helsing, Blood as both horror and seduction, Dracula became a literary sensation.
00:19:52.559 --> 00:19:56.240
But cinema would make him immortal.
00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:04.480
The earliest Dracula films appeared during the silent era.
00:20:04.799 --> 00:20:17.680
The lost Hungarian film Dracula's Death in 1921 is considered one of the earliest Dracula-related productions, while Nosferatu in 1922 became the first major cinematic adaptation of Stoker's story.
00:20:17.839 --> 00:20:20.799
Although names were changed to avoid copyright issues.
00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:23.200
Then came the version that changed everything.
00:20:23.440 --> 00:20:28.799
In 1931, Universal Pictures released Dracula starring Bella Legosi.
00:20:30.079 --> 00:20:36.480
Legosi's accent, cape, stare, and aristocratic manner defined Dracula for generations.
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:41.440
For many audiences, Dracula became sophisticated rather than monstrous.
00:20:42.160 --> 00:20:49.119
The next major transformation occurred in 1958 when Christopher Lee portrayed Dracula for Hammer films.
00:20:49.279 --> 00:20:55.920
Unlike Legosi's restrained count, Lee's Dracula was physical, violent, sensual, and animalistic.
00:20:56.240 --> 00:21:02.480
Hammer's version added vivid color, blood, and sexuality, helping create the modern horror vampire.
00:21:02.799 --> 00:21:11.359
Blacula in 1972, rather than creating a new vampire mythology, the filmmakers connected their hero directly to Dracula himself.
00:21:11.599 --> 00:21:17.759
In the story, an African prince visits Transylvania, is cursed by Dracula, and becomes Black Cula.
00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:21.119
What makes this movie significant is its cultural impact.
00:21:21.279 --> 00:21:25.200
It was one of the most successful black black sploitation.
00:21:25.440 --> 00:21:26.960
That is not an easy word to say.
00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:28.000
Horror films.
00:21:28.160 --> 00:21:34.880
One of the first major attempts to reinterpret vampire mythology through a black cultural lens.
00:21:35.920 --> 00:21:38.240
It was a precursor to later films like Blade.
00:21:38.559 --> 00:21:42.720
Without Blackula, you can make a strong argument there is no Blade.
00:21:43.759 --> 00:21:52.799
1973, the sequel to Bacula, Blackula, Scream Black Yellow Scream, expanded the mythology and gained cult status.
00:21:52.880 --> 00:21:57.279
By the late 70s, Dracula had already survived nearly 50 years of cinema.
00:21:57.519 --> 00:21:59.279
And then Gen X arrived.
00:22:00.640 --> 00:22:04.880
The late 70s and early 80s marked a major turning point.
00:22:05.119 --> 00:22:09.519
Young Gen X audiences were no longer content with a single version of Dracula.
00:22:09.680 --> 00:22:10.640
They wanted options.
00:22:10.880 --> 00:22:14.160
Funny, cool, romantic, monster, cartoon.
00:22:14.400 --> 00:22:16.960
The vampire exploded into pop culture.
00:22:17.200 --> 00:22:23.359
One of the first major signals was Love at First Bite in 1979, starring George Hamilton.
00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:29.680
The film presented Dracula as a fish out of water romantic comedy hero navigating modern New York City.
00:22:29.839 --> 00:22:36.640
It became a significant box office success and demonstrated that audiences were willing to laugh with Dracula, not just fear him.
00:22:36.799 --> 00:22:41.039
This playful approach would heavily influence Jen X perception of vampires.
00:22:41.359 --> 00:22:43.119
Did he only go out at night?
00:22:43.359 --> 00:22:43.759
I don't know.
00:22:43.839 --> 00:22:44.640
I've never seen that one.
00:22:46.079 --> 00:22:49.279
Oh, did you see that um one of the OG Star Treks?
00:22:49.599 --> 00:22:49.920
Yes.
00:22:51.119 --> 00:22:51.599
Yeah.
00:22:51.839 --> 00:22:56.799
And I watched an interview with him, an old interview when they were talking about him passing.
00:22:57.359 --> 00:23:00.799
And uh he's actually from Chicago.
00:23:01.920 --> 00:23:03.200
He hate up the accent.
00:23:03.519 --> 00:23:04.480
That's funny.
00:23:05.279 --> 00:23:09.680
It's crazy too because the kid that played Chekhov in the newer ones died too.
00:23:10.559 --> 00:23:11.279
His Jeep.
00:23:11.359 --> 00:23:12.880
He got ran over by his own Jeep.
00:23:13.359 --> 00:23:14.160
Changing attire.
00:23:14.480 --> 00:23:15.119
Recently?
00:23:15.359 --> 00:23:18.160
No, it was shortly after the third movie.
00:23:18.640 --> 00:23:19.440
Oh, okay.
00:23:19.680 --> 00:23:21.440
I think there's three of those.
00:23:22.720 --> 00:23:24.079
They're fine.
00:23:25.359 --> 00:23:26.400
They're whatever.
00:23:26.559 --> 00:23:28.240
This is not Star Trek.
00:23:29.519 --> 00:23:36.880
No discussion of Gen X vampires is complete without talking about perhaps the most beloved vampire of all time.
00:23:38.079 --> 00:23:46.720
And my personal favorite, Count Von Count of Sesame Street.
00:23:47.200 --> 00:23:54.240
Introduced in the early 1970s, the Count borrowed many elements from the classic Dracula image.
00:23:54.400 --> 00:23:58.640
The cape, the accent, the pointed features, the spooky laugh.
00:23:58.799 --> 00:23:59.519
Ah, uh.
00:24:00.400 --> 00:24:02.960
But instead of drinking blood, he counted things.
00:24:03.440 --> 00:24:04.000
Everything.
00:24:04.160 --> 00:24:04.559
Steps.
00:24:05.039 --> 00:24:06.240
How I learned how to count.
00:24:06.480 --> 00:24:08.079
Raindrops, bats.
00:24:09.359 --> 00:24:15.039
Children who grew up during the 80s and 90s often encountered Count Bon Count before they ever saw a horror movie.
00:24:15.119 --> 00:24:19.599
For countless Gen X and millennial viewers, he became their first Dracula.
00:24:20.960 --> 00:24:22.319
One Dracula.
00:24:23.519 --> 00:24:24.480
I love him.
00:24:24.880 --> 00:24:25.519
He's great.
00:24:25.599 --> 00:24:26.480
That's a great character.
00:24:26.720 --> 00:24:27.039
It is.
00:24:27.200 --> 00:24:28.160
I mean, come on.
00:24:29.200 --> 00:24:32.720
Like, I know we talked about Oscar the Grouch, also a great character.
00:24:33.359 --> 00:24:36.319
But I mean, to throw a motherfucking vampire.
00:24:36.480 --> 00:24:37.359
It is so random.
00:24:37.519 --> 00:24:38.240
It really is.
00:24:38.319 --> 00:24:41.119
And I mean, it's clever because the counting.
00:24:41.920 --> 00:24:42.720
Yeah, yeah.
00:24:42.880 --> 00:24:44.400
But it is super random.
00:24:44.559 --> 00:24:48.880
Like just it's great though.
00:24:51.279 --> 00:24:52.640
Uh the cow.
00:24:52.960 --> 00:25:00.799
Oh, children are the genius of the character was that he transformed vampire imagery into something educational and comforting.
00:25:00.880 --> 00:25:03.839
The count wasn't a predator, he was a math teacher.
00:25:04.160 --> 00:25:09.440
In a strange way, Count Von Count helped normalize Dracula as a family-friendly cultural icon.
00:25:09.680 --> 00:25:12.240
Very few monsters have ever made that transition.
00:25:14.079 --> 00:25:15.200
So there you go.
00:25:16.079 --> 00:25:18.400
Cookie monster, but he was a cookie monster.
00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:18.880
Exactly.
00:25:19.119 --> 00:25:20.640
That's not a very threatening monster.
00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:24.559
I mean, I guess it is if you're a cookie, but I am not.
00:25:26.079 --> 00:25:30.880
The 1980s were arguably the coolest decade ever for vampires.
00:25:31.359 --> 00:25:31.759
Yeah.
00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:33.599
There were a lot of the movies back then.
00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:37.359
Rather than dusty gothic castles, vampires entered Saburia.
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:40.319
They wore leather jackets and they listened to rock music.
00:25:40.559 --> 00:25:42.160
They became anti-heroes.
00:25:42.400 --> 00:25:50.960
The Hunger in 1983, a stylish atmospheric vampire film starring Catherine Devonaux, David Bowie, and Susan Sarandon.
00:25:51.119 --> 00:25:57.359
Miriam Blaylock, an ancient vampire, promises her lovers eternal life, but not eternal youth.
00:25:57.599 --> 00:26:08.799
When her longtime companion suddenly begins aging at an unnatural rate, she seeks help from a researcher studying aging, setting off a story that mixes horror, romance, and tragedy.
00:26:08.960 --> 00:26:17.680
The film became a cult classic and helped establish the sexy, sophisticated vampire aesthetic that would heavily influence later vampire fiction.
00:26:18.960 --> 00:26:26.720
Before vampires became brooding heartthrobs in the 90s, the hunger made them fashionable, erotic, artistic, and emotionally complex.
00:26:27.519 --> 00:26:31.759
Now this one is also one of my favorite.
00:26:31.920 --> 00:26:39.599
I don't know if I mentioned this, but the reason I'm doing vampires is that they seem to be my favorite of all the uh the monsters.
00:26:39.759 --> 00:26:40.400
Yeah, definitely.
00:26:40.559 --> 00:26:41.599
I mean they're the coolest.
00:26:41.759 --> 00:26:42.000
Yeah.
00:26:42.160 --> 00:26:43.440
They definitely got the swag.
00:26:43.599 --> 00:26:44.400
Yeah, for sure.
00:26:44.559 --> 00:26:46.640
They got Riz as the kids these days.
00:26:46.880 --> 00:26:48.960
And they decorate their house the way you would want to decorate their house.
00:26:49.279 --> 00:26:49.759
100%.
00:26:50.799 --> 00:26:51.759
Totally get down.
00:26:51.920 --> 00:26:55.359
The only thing I don't like about them is that they live forever and I don't want to do that.
00:26:55.680 --> 00:26:56.000
Yeah.
00:26:56.240 --> 00:26:56.960
That's terrible.
00:26:57.200 --> 00:26:57.599
True.
00:26:57.759 --> 00:26:59.519
And they gotta eat drink blood.
00:26:59.759 --> 00:27:00.000
Yeah.
00:27:00.319 --> 00:27:01.680
But they get to sleep in a coffin.
00:27:01.839 --> 00:27:03.119
They do get to sleep in a coffin.
00:27:03.440 --> 00:27:07.359
And but they they can't go out in the day, and I get very tired at night.
00:27:08.000 --> 00:27:09.680
Yeah, I'm not a night person.
00:27:10.640 --> 00:27:12.319
So many, many reasons.
00:27:12.559 --> 00:27:14.640
No, it's not in the stars for you to be a vampire.
00:27:14.880 --> 00:27:16.079
I guess I won't be a vampire.
00:27:16.240 --> 00:27:16.799
Oh well.
00:27:17.759 --> 00:27:18.480
Oh well.
00:27:19.839 --> 00:27:26.000
One of the defining Gen X vampire films is Fright Night from 1985.
00:27:26.799 --> 00:27:27.519
I don't care.
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:30.559
I can watch Fright Night any day.
00:27:30.960 --> 00:27:31.839
Evil Ed.
00:27:32.640 --> 00:27:39.359
Also, Chris Durandon is um the head vampire, and he is also Jack Skellington.
00:27:40.880 --> 00:27:42.319
I remember Fright Night.
00:27:42.480 --> 00:27:43.359
I fucking love Fright.
00:27:43.519 --> 00:27:44.240
I remember watching it.
00:27:44.400 --> 00:27:46.240
I can say it word for word.
00:27:46.960 --> 00:27:52.720
My friend and I used all she had it on VHS.
00:27:53.279 --> 00:27:55.039
And we would watch it in the summer all the time.
00:27:55.119 --> 00:28:01.680
And her mom would make us double decker peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and black cherry Kool-Aid.
00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:06.160
And we would watch Fright Night at least once a week.
00:28:07.759 --> 00:28:10.880
And Evil Ed, oh man.
00:28:13.200 --> 00:28:25.119
God, that's it's uh I could do it, but I'm not going to because that's a great part, is when the Evil Ed is in the bed pretending to be his mom.
00:28:26.880 --> 00:28:28.400
But she left a note.
00:28:28.880 --> 00:28:31.279
His dinner is in the oven.
00:28:31.599 --> 00:28:33.279
And then he thought, oh, great.
00:28:34.400 --> 00:28:40.319
A teenage horror fan discovers that his neighbor is a vampire and struggles to convince anyone he's telling the truth.
00:28:40.559 --> 00:28:48.480
The film perfectly captured an era when horror movies were becoming self-aware while reimagining genuine, genuinely frightening.
00:28:48.640 --> 00:28:51.039
I don't know that it was genuinely frightening.
00:28:51.359 --> 00:28:52.000
Yeah.
00:28:52.960 --> 00:28:54.720
Even then it didn't scare me.
00:28:55.599 --> 00:28:58.319
I used to watch it, so it couldn't have been too much.
00:28:58.559 --> 00:29:02.079
You have to have faith for that to work on me, Mr.
00:29:02.319 --> 00:29:03.119
Vincent.
00:29:03.839 --> 00:29:05.680
God, I love that movie.
00:29:06.160 --> 00:29:10.079
Once bitten in 1985, starring a young Jim Carrey.
00:29:10.160 --> 00:29:11.039
Also a great one.
00:29:11.519 --> 00:29:19.039
The story follows a teenage boy persuaded by a centuries-old vampire countess who needs the blood of a virgin to maintain her youth.
00:29:19.200 --> 00:29:23.200
Today it is mainly remembered because it's an early Jim Carrey performance.
00:29:23.359 --> 00:29:27.039
It captures 1980s teen comedy culture perfectly.
00:29:27.279 --> 00:29:30.160
And it proves vampires could work outside of horror.
00:29:30.720 --> 00:29:33.519
I didn't realize that that was Jim Carrey.
00:29:33.839 --> 00:29:34.079
Yes.
00:29:34.240 --> 00:29:34.799
It's yes.
00:29:35.039 --> 00:29:36.000
I haven't watched it in a long time.
00:29:36.240 --> 00:29:36.640
It's great.
00:29:36.720 --> 00:29:37.119
You should.
00:29:37.279 --> 00:29:37.519
Yeah.
00:29:37.759 --> 00:29:38.880
I'm sure it's on right now.
00:29:39.119 --> 00:29:39.920
Probably.
00:29:40.400 --> 00:29:45.920
Um, of course, no, we can't have a list without the Lost Boys.
00:29:46.160 --> 00:29:48.319
I was gonna say, what are you gonna skip over it?
00:29:48.640 --> 00:29:50.720
No, because it wasn't until 1987.
00:29:51.039 --> 00:29:52.960
Um, another movie I love.
00:29:53.279 --> 00:29:57.279
I mean I'm not into vampire movies, but uh hi a that is just love that movie.
00:29:57.519 --> 00:30:00.640
I'm gonna say, and this this might be controversial.
00:30:00.799 --> 00:30:01.039
Okay.
00:30:01.200 --> 00:30:02.880
I'm gonna be controversial for a moment.
00:30:03.119 --> 00:30:06.480
Okay, it is my second favorite.
00:30:07.279 --> 00:30:09.359
We have not mentioned my first favorite yet.
00:30:09.599 --> 00:30:09.920
Okay.
00:30:10.480 --> 00:30:18.079
I know you know what my first favorite is, but it's my second favorite, and then I would put Fright Night as a close third.
00:30:18.319 --> 00:30:18.640
Okay.
00:30:18.880 --> 00:30:23.519
I do love The Lost Boys, and I have watched it numerous times in the last month.
00:30:24.240 --> 00:30:25.359
Great soundtrack, too.
00:30:25.599 --> 00:30:30.799
It's it's all the way, I mean, all the way around, it's a great movie.
00:30:31.279 --> 00:30:39.039
I I just keeper is just so everything.
00:30:39.200 --> 00:30:44.559
This see, this is the problem because this uh all this is where my love of the bad boy has come up.
00:30:47.599 --> 00:30:50.400
I mean, keep come on, it's keeper's fault.
00:30:50.559 --> 00:30:52.240
It is keeper's fault.
00:30:52.880 --> 00:30:55.279
The vampire is a rebellious teenager.
00:30:55.440 --> 00:30:58.559
Motorcycles, rock music, boardwalks, leather coats.
00:30:58.720 --> 00:31:03.519
The film transformed vampires from old aristocrats into cool outsiders.
00:31:03.680 --> 00:31:07.279
Its influence can still be seen in modern vampire fiction.
00:31:08.480 --> 00:31:14.079
I was gonna go more into like all, but then I was like, we will be here for the rest of eternity.
00:31:14.319 --> 00:31:18.079
So I'm not gonna, we're just gonna remember the movie and move to the next one.
00:31:18.160 --> 00:31:18.799
Yep, yep.
00:31:18.960 --> 00:31:24.640
We all know, and if you're listening, I'm sure that you love the Lost Boys too because you're Gen X.
00:31:24.960 --> 00:31:27.279
So you remember it.
00:31:27.519 --> 00:31:31.920
You don't need to go into the Monster Squad in 1987.
00:31:32.880 --> 00:31:38.960
The plot centers around a group of children facing classic universal-inspired monsters led by Count Dracula.
00:31:39.119 --> 00:31:47.119
Dracula serves as the mastermind attempting to take over the world while commanding Frankenstein's monster, the wolfman, the mummy, and the gill man.
00:31:47.279 --> 00:31:49.359
I don't remember the monster squad.
00:31:50.160 --> 00:31:51.680
I don't either.
00:31:52.400 --> 00:31:54.960
It was a cartoon, I do think.
00:31:55.279 --> 00:31:55.599
Oh.
00:31:56.000 --> 00:32:01.200
I was gonna say it sounded like Transylvania 6500 when you started naming all the characters off.
00:32:01.759 --> 00:32:04.000
Who also has a vampire in it, Gina Davis.
00:32:04.160 --> 00:32:04.640
It does.
00:32:07.599 --> 00:32:07.920
Okay.
00:32:08.400 --> 00:32:13.519
The 1980s also brought vampire imagery into mainstream television.
00:32:13.839 --> 00:32:17.839
Horror anthology series frequently featured vampire episodes.
00:32:18.000 --> 00:32:21.039
Saturday morning cartoons regularly spoofed Dracula.
00:32:21.200 --> 00:32:23.839
Even commercials borrowed vampire imagery.
00:32:24.559 --> 00:32:31.200
By the end of the decade, Dracula was everywhere, and audiences still wanted more.
00:32:31.759 --> 00:32:34.160
Including my favorite serial count chocolate.
00:32:34.319 --> 00:32:37.039
I was just gonna say count chocula and booberry.
00:32:37.279 --> 00:32:39.440
Although count chocolate was way better back then than it is.
00:32:39.920 --> 00:32:42.799
Well, now it's everything was way better then.
00:32:43.039 --> 00:32:51.359
It was my friend and I were talking about it the other day, and he was so jealous that I got to eat the foods in the 80s because he was like, I'm sure all that shit tasted way better.
00:32:51.440 --> 00:32:52.720
And I was like so much better.
00:32:52.960 --> 00:32:55.039
That's trans fats and everything.
00:32:55.359 --> 00:32:56.160
Yep, yep.
00:32:56.400 --> 00:32:57.279
So much better.
00:32:58.000 --> 00:33:06.240
So now we're gonna before we move to the 90s, before we leave the 80s and move to the 90s, let's do your diary.
00:33:06.960 --> 00:33:13.359
All right, all right, for this week's uh passage from Nicole's diary.
00:33:13.599 --> 00:33:16.240
We've jumped all the way to July 8th, 1987.
00:33:16.480 --> 00:33:16.960
Oh wow.
00:33:17.119 --> 00:33:18.720
We were only in 86 last time that we went.
00:33:18.880 --> 00:33:19.359
We have, yeah.
00:33:19.519 --> 00:33:20.960
We are moving fast through time.
00:33:21.119 --> 00:33:23.279
Yes, and it was Wednesday, in case you were wondering.
00:33:23.599 --> 00:33:24.240
Interesting.
00:33:24.480 --> 00:33:25.279
Hey Diary.
00:33:25.599 --> 00:33:27.519
Hey, what's up?
00:33:27.839 --> 00:33:29.599
What's up, down, and around?
00:33:29.839 --> 00:33:30.640
Oh shit.
00:33:30.799 --> 00:33:31.440
Yep.
00:33:31.680 --> 00:33:33.519
Uh well, that was so cool.
00:33:33.839 --> 00:33:38.319
You were uh well, a lot has happened lately, so I decided to tell you about my life.
00:33:38.559 --> 00:33:39.599
I mean, that's a good idea.
00:33:40.799 --> 00:33:44.319
Summer has been happening and it's been great.
00:33:44.640 --> 00:33:46.240
Good, good, good news.
00:33:46.480 --> 00:33:46.880
Uh-huh.
00:33:47.039 --> 00:33:47.440
Uh-huh.
00:33:48.160 --> 00:33:52.240
I've gone to Busch Gardens for making honor roll in school.
00:33:52.640 --> 00:33:54.720
And I've gone to Hershey Park for the band.
00:33:55.519 --> 00:33:59.759
And my friend is taking me again in August to Hershey Park.
00:33:59.839 --> 00:34:03.039
And I rode a roller coaster for the first time this summer.
00:34:03.279 --> 00:34:04.880
They are so awesome.
00:34:05.119 --> 00:34:06.240
So awesome.
00:34:06.480 --> 00:34:10.719
On July 24th, I am going to see Joan Jet.
00:34:11.039 --> 00:34:11.360
Oh.
00:34:11.840 --> 00:34:12.800
At the fair.
00:34:13.599 --> 00:34:14.639
You bitch.
00:34:14.880 --> 00:34:16.800
I remember it was my first concert.
00:34:16.960 --> 00:34:22.079
And I thought I was 16, but apparently I was only 14, which is so much more exciting.
00:34:23.039 --> 00:34:24.000
I can't wait.
00:34:24.159 --> 00:34:27.519
Well, that's all I have to say for now.
00:34:27.679 --> 00:34:29.760
Just figured I'd update you on my life.
00:34:29.920 --> 00:34:30.719
Love Nicole.
00:34:31.119 --> 00:34:31.679
You know what?
00:34:31.840 --> 00:34:38.480
2026, Heather is very happy that you updated us on going to see Joan Jet.
00:34:38.880 --> 00:34:46.960
I remember I wanted to go so bad, and my friend was going, and I begged and begged and begged and begged my mom and she actually let me go.
00:34:47.199 --> 00:34:48.400
I can't believe she let you go.
00:34:48.559 --> 00:34:50.000
I can't either.
00:34:50.400 --> 00:34:51.039
Yes.
00:34:51.519 --> 00:34:52.320
Good for you.
00:34:52.480 --> 00:34:52.719
Yeah.
00:34:52.880 --> 00:34:53.760
I'm so jealous.
00:34:53.920 --> 00:34:54.159
Yeah.
00:34:54.800 --> 00:34:56.159
I have not ever seen Joan Jet.
00:34:56.239 --> 00:34:57.760
Oh my gosh, I've seen her three times.
00:34:58.000 --> 00:34:59.920
I cannot ever get to Joan Jet.
00:35:00.320 --> 00:35:02.239
Joan Jet eludes me.
00:35:03.840 --> 00:35:05.280
And I love Joan Jet.
00:35:05.679 --> 00:35:07.519
I love Joan Jet.
00:35:08.079 --> 00:35:09.199
She's awesome.
00:35:09.440 --> 00:35:09.760
Yeah.
00:35:10.000 --> 00:35:10.400
All right.
00:35:10.480 --> 00:35:11.119
So that's it.
00:35:11.280 --> 00:35:11.599
Okay.
00:35:16.480 --> 00:35:21.360
If the 90s if the 80s made vampires cool, the 90s made them romantic.
00:35:22.639 --> 00:35:25.920
The decade began with a major event.
00:35:26.800 --> 00:35:27.920
1992.
00:35:28.079 --> 00:35:29.440
I graduated from high school.
00:35:29.920 --> 00:35:35.360
Other than that, I didn't realize that that's when this came out.
00:35:35.840 --> 00:35:37.199
But it makes sense.
00:35:37.519 --> 00:35:39.360
Bram Stoker Dracula.
00:35:39.599 --> 00:35:44.800
Which is in fact, spoiler alert, my favorite vampire movie.
00:35:45.119 --> 00:35:45.840
Thanks, of course.
00:35:46.079 --> 00:35:49.039
I mean, fucking Gary Oldman.
00:35:49.360 --> 00:35:49.840
Yeah.
00:35:50.079 --> 00:35:51.599
I would move the world for Gary.
00:35:52.320 --> 00:35:53.760
You have loved him for a long time.
00:35:54.000 --> 00:35:57.760
Man, there is not a movie that I don't like that he Oh, I lied.
00:35:58.239 --> 00:36:00.880
He's in a Harry Potter, and I've never seen the Harry Potter.
00:36:01.440 --> 00:36:02.320
So sorry, Gary.
00:36:02.719 --> 00:36:04.159
I think I saw the first one, but that's awesome.
00:36:04.400 --> 00:36:05.599
Yeah, he's in one of them.
00:36:05.760 --> 00:36:08.480
I mean, he plays Commissioner Gordon.
00:36:08.960 --> 00:36:13.519
He The Professional is only one of the greatest movies.
00:36:14.079 --> 00:36:15.280
Does he ever do bad?
00:36:15.360 --> 00:36:15.599
No.
00:36:15.840 --> 00:36:17.039
Sid and Nancy?
00:36:19.519 --> 00:36:20.719
Gary Oldman.
00:36:21.360 --> 00:36:23.599
Gary Oldman and Wanona Ryder.
00:36:23.840 --> 00:36:24.320
Yeah.
00:36:24.639 --> 00:36:25.280
And Keanu.
00:36:26.320 --> 00:36:28.480
I guess we'll add him in, but you know.
00:36:28.800 --> 00:36:30.320
You can't forget Johnny Depp.
00:36:31.440 --> 00:36:33.440
Johnny Depp's not in Dracula, though.
00:36:33.599 --> 00:36:33.920
Oh.
00:36:34.159 --> 00:36:35.199
I thought you were just listening.
00:36:35.360 --> 00:36:36.400
No, Keanu is in Dracula.
00:36:38.000 --> 00:36:42.000
No, I know nothing against Keanu, but I'm not.
00:36:42.239 --> 00:36:43.280
You're not a Keanu fan.
00:36:43.440 --> 00:36:44.159
I'm not a Keanu.
00:36:44.400 --> 00:36:46.079
I I I like him as a human being.
00:36:46.159 --> 00:36:48.159
I just not a big I mean Bill and Ted.
00:36:48.239 --> 00:36:49.280
I love fucking Bill and Ted.
00:36:49.440 --> 00:36:49.920
Yeah, yeah.
00:36:50.079 --> 00:36:50.800
And he does fine.
00:36:50.960 --> 00:36:51.440
I get that.
00:36:51.679 --> 00:36:54.880
I think my issue is I can't ever move past Bill and Ted.
00:36:55.280 --> 00:36:56.239
I think that's a problem.
00:36:56.480 --> 00:37:00.800
He he is one of those actors that it's hard to take seriously, but he's made serious movies.
00:37:01.199 --> 00:37:02.239
Like Nicolas Cage.
00:37:02.400 --> 00:37:02.719
Yeah.
00:37:02.960 --> 00:37:07.199
So like I like Nicolas Cage, but it's hard to take in a serious role.
00:37:07.280 --> 00:37:07.440
Yeah.
00:37:07.519 --> 00:37:07.679
Yeah.
00:37:07.760 --> 00:37:09.519
I mean he was face off.
00:37:09.599 --> 00:37:13.280
So I mean, let's he he was fine in Dracula.
00:37:13.440 --> 00:37:14.800
Like he did the job.
00:37:15.039 --> 00:37:16.320
It was acceptable.
00:37:16.559 --> 00:37:17.039
Yeah.
00:37:17.280 --> 00:37:19.679
But you're also going, and that's another thing.
00:37:19.840 --> 00:37:27.760
Like, I mean, you're going up with Gary Ullman and Winona Ryder and um uh Anthony Hopkins.
00:37:27.840 --> 00:37:34.480
And I mean, like, you're in a movie with some heavy hitters there, and that's tough spot for Keanu.
00:37:34.880 --> 00:37:38.159
But I don't get me wrong, I do love Keanu as a human being.
00:37:38.239 --> 00:37:39.599
I think he's a great human being.
00:37:40.239 --> 00:37:42.320
Just have trouble taking him seriously.
00:37:43.039 --> 00:37:43.760
I get it.
00:37:44.000 --> 00:37:49.599
Francis Ford Coble's lavish adaptation became the defining Dracula film of the decade.
00:37:49.760 --> 00:38:01.679
The movie starred Gary Oldman as Dracula and explicitly linked the count to Vlad the Impaler, portraying Dracula as a 15th century ruler transformed into a vampire after tragedy and betrayal.
00:38:02.079 --> 00:38:03.920
This was a critical turning point.
00:38:04.079 --> 00:38:07.360
Earlier films presented Dracula primarily as a monster.
00:38:07.599 --> 00:38:10.559
Coppola presented him as a tragic anti-hero.
00:38:10.719 --> 00:38:14.880
Suddenly, Dracula had motivations, heartbreak, loss, and a love story.
00:38:15.119 --> 00:38:20.079
The film was visually extravagant, commercially successful, and enormously influential.
00:38:20.239 --> 00:38:25.280
It grossed over 215 million worldwide and won three Academy Awards.
00:38:25.920 --> 00:38:31.199
Many modern vampire romances trace directly back to this interpretation.
00:38:32.800 --> 00:38:33.440
Yeah.
00:38:34.639 --> 00:38:56.480
I mean the scene where Gary Oldman has got the tap top hat and one own is walking around and he just says, see me now, and she uh that's the only reason I would want to be a vampire is if I could live with Gary Oldman forever.
00:38:57.519 --> 00:39:00.320
I mean, name a Gary Oldman movie that's not good.
00:39:00.639 --> 00:39:01.199
You can't.
00:39:01.360 --> 00:39:01.840
You can't.
00:39:01.920 --> 00:39:03.039
Maybe the Harry Potter.
00:39:03.119 --> 00:39:03.440
I don't know.
00:39:03.519 --> 00:39:04.639
I didn't see it.
00:39:05.599 --> 00:39:07.039
I'm sure he crushed it.
00:39:07.280 --> 00:39:08.159
I mean, fifth element?
00:39:08.400 --> 00:39:09.360
He's in the fifth element.
00:39:09.920 --> 00:39:12.880
Oh god, is there anything that man can't do?
00:39:13.280 --> 00:39:15.519
I'm a big Gary Oldman fan.
00:39:18.000 --> 00:39:22.880
If Dracula made vampires monsters, Anne Rice made them protagonists.
00:39:23.039 --> 00:39:28.159
Her 1976 novel, Interview with the Vampire, completely changed the genre.
00:39:28.400 --> 00:39:34.800
Before Rice, most vampire stories were about stopping vampires, hunting vampires, escaping vampires.
00:39:35.119 --> 00:39:38.559
Rice asked, What if the vampire is the main character?
00:39:38.800 --> 00:39:44.159
Suddenly, vampire stories became philosophical, romantic, tragic, and existential.
00:39:44.400 --> 00:39:46.800
They mom the monsters became sympathetic.
00:39:46.960 --> 00:39:49.519
The hunter became less important than the victim.
00:39:49.760 --> 00:39:52.000
The influence dominated the 90s.
00:39:52.320 --> 00:39:55.760
And is that your least favorite vampire movie?
00:39:56.079 --> 00:39:56.639
Yes.
00:39:57.199 --> 00:39:58.960
Can anyone guess why?
00:39:59.360 --> 00:40:00.159
Two reasons.
00:40:00.400 --> 00:40:00.719
Oh.
00:40:01.440 --> 00:40:02.719
I know one reason.
00:40:03.920 --> 00:40:05.519
Starring Tom Cruise.
00:40:05.840 --> 00:40:06.639
One reason.
00:40:07.119 --> 00:40:09.199
Oh, interview of the vampire 1994.
00:40:09.360 --> 00:40:11.599
Starring Tom Cruise, reason number one.
00:40:11.840 --> 00:40:13.760
Brad Pitt, reason number two.
00:40:14.159 --> 00:40:14.880
Don't like him.
00:40:15.039 --> 00:40:15.360
Sorry.
00:40:15.679 --> 00:40:16.719
I can tolerate him.
00:40:17.039 --> 00:40:18.639
I don't hate him as much as Tom Cruise.
00:40:18.719 --> 00:40:19.840
Like I won't avoid him.
00:40:19.920 --> 00:40:23.199
I thought his performance in 12 Monkeys was phenomenal.
00:40:25.920 --> 00:40:28.079
And I like I I like his movies.
00:40:28.239 --> 00:40:30.000
I just don't know how I feel about him.
00:40:30.480 --> 00:40:31.440
I think that's it.
00:40:31.599 --> 00:40:32.960
I don't mind his movies.
00:40:33.199 --> 00:40:33.760
I mean seven.
00:40:35.280 --> 00:40:37.920
Fucking seven is just but I don't know that.
00:40:38.480 --> 00:40:40.559
I just watched one of his movies the other day.
00:40:40.800 --> 00:40:44.960
Um god damn it.
00:40:45.039 --> 00:40:46.159
It's one of my favorites.
00:40:46.239 --> 00:40:54.639
It's the one where he's uh he's Irish and he's a boxer, and it has Jason Statham in it.
00:40:54.800 --> 00:40:56.559
It's a guy Richie movie.
00:40:56.719 --> 00:40:58.079
Is it fight club?
00:40:58.320 --> 00:40:58.639
No.
00:40:58.880 --> 00:40:59.679
I don't know then.
00:41:00.639 --> 00:41:02.880
It's one of my favorites though, too.
00:41:03.840 --> 00:41:06.800
I can't remember right now what it's called, but yeah.
00:41:07.039 --> 00:41:08.320
I I like Brad Pitt.
00:41:08.400 --> 00:41:10.079
I mean, I I like him in movies.
00:41:10.239 --> 00:41:13.039
So I I he doesn't deter me from seeing a movie.
00:41:13.280 --> 00:41:13.599
Okay.
00:41:14.159 --> 00:41:16.480
I just would prefer he not be in a movie.
00:41:16.719 --> 00:41:17.760
Like he's fine.
00:41:18.320 --> 00:41:19.119
He's fine.
00:41:19.440 --> 00:41:23.199
But I wouldn't go out of my way unless I want to see the movie.
00:41:23.280 --> 00:41:28.079
I mean, seven, I feel like Morgan Freeman is the seven.
00:41:28.320 --> 00:41:28.719
Yeah.
00:41:28.960 --> 00:41:33.440
Like he's kind of a Morgan Freeman makes seven, I think.
00:41:33.760 --> 00:41:38.719
And and and uh what's his name who's not allowed to be in movies anymore.
00:41:39.119 --> 00:41:40.320
Kevin Spacey.
00:41:40.480 --> 00:41:43.280
I mean the premise of that movie is amazing.
00:41:43.440 --> 00:41:45.519
Everything about that movie, but we're not talking about yes.
00:41:45.679 --> 00:41:45.920
What?
00:41:46.159 --> 00:41:46.719
Snatch.
00:41:46.960 --> 00:41:47.440
Snatch.
00:41:47.679 --> 00:41:48.960
That was what I was trying to think of.
00:41:49.119 --> 00:41:49.440
Okay.
00:41:50.239 --> 00:41:51.679
I just he's fine.
00:41:51.840 --> 00:41:52.159
Okay.
00:41:52.719 --> 00:41:57.039
Uh Kirsten Dunst is in it in Antonio Banderas.
00:41:57.519 --> 00:42:00.960
Although I thought Antonio Banderas wasn't in it until later.
00:42:01.840 --> 00:42:04.559
Kirsten Dunst seems like an odd choice.
00:42:04.800 --> 00:42:06.559
She was the little girl, Claudia.
00:42:07.280 --> 00:42:08.239
I like the books.
00:42:08.639 --> 00:42:10.079
I have read all of the Anne Rice.
00:42:10.320 --> 00:42:13.599
Not all of them, but I've read the majority of them.
00:42:14.079 --> 00:42:19.199
But, and I have seen it is one of the few Tom Cruise movies I have seen.
00:42:19.440 --> 00:42:24.159
And the love of Anne Rice outweighed my hatred of Tom Cruise on that one.
00:42:24.559 --> 00:42:25.679
And my love of vampires.
00:42:25.840 --> 00:42:26.159
Yes.
00:42:26.400 --> 00:42:27.519
So I did go see that.
00:42:27.840 --> 00:42:30.639
I have, however, now I won't watch it again.
00:42:31.599 --> 00:42:34.719
Like I've maybe seen it two or three times, and I just won't do it anymore.
00:42:34.880 --> 00:42:37.199
I also did not see the Aaliyah one.
00:42:38.320 --> 00:42:39.519
Queen of the Damned.
00:42:39.760 --> 00:42:40.320
All right.
00:42:40.800 --> 00:42:48.639
I Tom, I think because I saw interview with the vampire and it just turned my stomach to the whole situation.
00:42:51.519 --> 00:42:53.280
Tom Grez could go live with the fucking eye.
00:42:53.599 --> 00:42:55.599
He is another random choice for a vampire.
00:42:55.920 --> 00:42:56.800
He shouldn't have been it.
00:42:56.960 --> 00:42:57.280
No.
00:42:57.519 --> 00:42:57.840
No.
00:42:59.519 --> 00:43:04.719
You could have made if you're gonna do it, literally anybody else.
00:43:04.960 --> 00:43:05.519
Literally.
00:43:06.000 --> 00:43:10.079
I mean, obviously you couldn't use Gary Ollman because he was already in a vampire memory.
00:43:12.400 --> 00:43:13.599
Does he have a cousin or something?
00:43:13.920 --> 00:43:14.320
Yeah, right?
00:43:14.480 --> 00:43:15.920
Like any literally anyway.
00:43:16.400 --> 00:43:18.000
What's Kiefer doing?
00:43:19.840 --> 00:43:21.280
Let's bring him back.
00:43:23.760 --> 00:43:31.119
The sexy, tortured, immortal vampire that would later dominate pulp culture owes far more to Anne Rice than Bram Stoker.
00:43:31.440 --> 00:43:33.920
A great point for the oh wait, no.
00:43:35.599 --> 00:43:36.960
Dracula wants your blood.
00:43:37.039 --> 00:43:39.360
Louis wants you to understand his feelings.
00:43:39.599 --> 00:43:42.320
And that's the shift Anne Rice created.
00:43:43.360 --> 00:43:45.519
Dracula on television.
00:43:45.760 --> 00:43:52.239
The 90s also saw Dracula and vampire mythology become increasingly common across television.
00:43:52.559 --> 00:43:58.719
Shows such as I'm gonna leave the last one for last, Tales from the Crypt.
00:43:59.199 --> 00:43:59.760
I love that show.
00:44:00.079 --> 00:44:01.599
Are you afraid of the dark?
00:44:01.840 --> 00:44:06.079
And of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
00:44:06.320 --> 00:44:23.679
I did not mention the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is also one of my favorite movies of all time because Paula Rubens, aka Pew E Herman, has the greatest death scene of any death scene ever on earth in that movie.
00:44:24.400 --> 00:44:25.920
It's just great.
00:44:27.119 --> 00:44:30.320
I also love the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
00:44:30.719 --> 00:44:35.199
Although I have heard that watching it now is a little more difficult.
00:44:35.920 --> 00:44:37.280
I haven't watched it in a while.
00:44:37.599 --> 00:44:38.639
Did it not age well?
00:44:38.960 --> 00:44:40.000
Apparently not.
00:44:40.400 --> 00:44:41.920
Some of it did not age well.
00:44:42.159 --> 00:44:42.480
Okay.
00:44:42.960 --> 00:44:46.639
I also enjoyed the spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
00:44:46.800 --> 00:44:47.360
Angel.
00:44:49.119 --> 00:44:49.519
Yeah.
00:44:50.559 --> 00:44:55.519
But we won't go into depth on Bump, but because again, we could be here forever.
00:44:55.679 --> 00:44:56.559
If I go in.
00:44:56.960 --> 00:45:00.400
By the way, I preferred Spike over Angel.
00:45:01.280 --> 00:45:01.679
Yeah.
00:45:01.840 --> 00:45:03.440
Did you watch Buffy?
00:45:04.079 --> 00:45:04.400
No.
00:45:05.840 --> 00:45:06.320
I didn't.
00:45:07.119 --> 00:45:07.280
I did.
00:45:07.519 --> 00:45:08.800
I I loved it.
00:45:10.000 --> 00:45:19.760
I don't think it's so much that it it's it's I think it tries to take itself too seriously is part of the problem why it doesn't hold up now.
00:45:19.920 --> 00:45:21.760
Like the movie was just silly.
00:45:23.920 --> 00:45:25.440
And I don't know.
00:45:25.599 --> 00:45:27.119
I I'll watch it again, maybe.
00:45:27.199 --> 00:45:28.480
And then I'll come back.
00:45:28.639 --> 00:45:29.519
I'll revisit.
00:45:29.760 --> 00:45:30.000
Okay.
00:45:30.239 --> 00:45:34.639
But I have heard other people say, don't go back and watch it because you don't want that.
00:45:35.199 --> 00:45:37.119
You don't want to take that away from yourself.
00:45:37.360 --> 00:45:37.679
Okay.
00:45:40.159 --> 00:45:44.320
Are you afraid of the dark helped keep vampire lore visible to younger audiences.
00:45:44.480 --> 00:45:48.320
Even when Dracula himself was absent, his DNA remained everywhere.
00:45:48.639 --> 00:45:53.360
Numerous cartoon productions adapted or spoofed Dracula during the decade.
00:45:53.599 --> 00:45:58.239
And that was a um like a teen book series, right?
00:45:58.480 --> 00:45:58.639
Yes.
00:45:58.800 --> 00:45:59.360
Are you afraid of the dark?
00:45:59.519 --> 00:46:00.159
Are you afraid of the dark?
00:46:00.400 --> 00:46:00.480
Okay.
00:46:01.360 --> 00:46:08.480
Um then they had the um the brat dolls that aren't bratz dolls, that they're monster, monster high.
00:46:08.639 --> 00:46:09.440
Oh yeah.
00:46:09.679 --> 00:46:10.079
Yeah.
00:46:10.320 --> 00:46:11.039
Dracula.
00:46:11.119 --> 00:46:11.920
There was a vampire.
00:46:12.079 --> 00:46:12.800
Dracula High.
00:46:13.039 --> 00:46:13.360
Okay.
00:46:14.639 --> 00:46:19.360
Um the Dracula myth had become a universal shorthand.
00:46:19.440 --> 00:46:21.519
Everyone understood the joke.
00:46:21.920 --> 00:46:32.159
In the 90s, also produced one of the most memorable Dracula comedies, Dead and Loving It in 1995, directed by Mel Brooks and starring starring Leslie Nielsen.
00:46:32.239 --> 00:46:42.159
The film spoofed Bram Stoker's novel as well as previous Dracula movies, including Coppola's adaptation, adaptation, and classic Universal and Hammer films.
00:46:43.199 --> 00:46:44.480
I don't remember that one.
00:46:44.639 --> 00:46:46.559
I don't remember that one either.
00:46:47.039 --> 00:46:52.239
But I'm not, it's not that I'm not a Mel, but I have to like, I feel like I'm always caveating things.
00:46:52.800 --> 00:46:55.440
The problem is, is I am not a movie fan.
00:46:55.599 --> 00:46:57.119
I don't watch a lot of movies.
00:46:57.519 --> 00:47:00.880
I don't know why, because I can binge watch a TV show for hours at a time.
00:47:01.039 --> 00:47:01.679
I'm the same.
00:47:02.000 --> 00:47:05.840
I will sit down with the intent, I'm gonna sit here and watch all eight of these episodes.
00:47:06.000 --> 00:47:06.159
Yes.
00:47:06.320 --> 00:47:08.880
But I'll go to a movie and it'll say two hours and 32 minutes.
00:47:09.119 --> 00:47:10.000
I'm like, that's way too long.
00:47:10.159 --> 00:47:11.360
Yeah, there's no way I can't do it.
00:47:11.519 --> 00:47:11.599
Yeah.
00:47:11.920 --> 00:47:13.039
And I can pause it.
00:47:13.119 --> 00:47:16.400
It's not like I have to sit there for two and a half hours and watch it.
00:47:16.719 --> 00:47:17.519
No, I don't know.
00:47:17.679 --> 00:47:18.480
It's so weird.
00:47:18.639 --> 00:47:22.800
I I I don't I've never been a big movie.
00:47:22.960 --> 00:47:24.960
I never really went to the movies all that much.
00:47:25.119 --> 00:47:27.519
And I just I don't know why.
00:47:27.760 --> 00:47:30.000
Television, I've always preferred the small screen.
00:47:30.639 --> 00:47:31.199
I see.
00:47:31.920 --> 00:47:33.119
I don't know why.
00:47:34.320 --> 00:47:34.960
Weirdo.
00:47:37.199 --> 00:47:45.039
Uh Dracula had become so culturally recognizable that the entire movie could be built around paroding him.
00:47:45.199 --> 00:47:46.480
Everyone already knew the rules.
00:47:46.639 --> 00:47:51.280
Avoid sunlight, fear garlic, sleep in a coffin, transform into a bat.
00:47:51.440 --> 00:47:54.480
That's also why I couldn't be a I I like garlic too much.
00:47:54.559 --> 00:47:58.960
Like you would eliminate like nearly all the foods I eat if I can't have garlic.
00:47:59.280 --> 00:47:59.599
True.
00:47:59.760 --> 00:48:00.159
Very true.
00:48:00.480 --> 00:48:01.360
That would be the end of.
00:48:01.679 --> 00:48:03.360
I mean, I guess I could only drink blood.
00:48:03.519 --> 00:48:04.239
But then so what?
00:48:04.320 --> 00:48:05.920
You can't drink like Italian blood?
00:48:06.079 --> 00:48:07.679
Because it's just trust me.
00:48:08.000 --> 00:48:12.239
My mom is like, there's mostly garlic running through those veins.
00:48:13.199 --> 00:48:14.559
So you can't.
00:48:15.519 --> 00:48:16.639
I guess you can't.
00:48:18.320 --> 00:48:20.239
You're gonna have to ask a vampire sometimes.
00:48:22.079 --> 00:48:23.280
If I run into one.
00:48:23.440 --> 00:48:24.079
Yeah.
00:48:24.400 --> 00:48:27.679
Blade in 1998, starring Leslie Snipes.
00:48:27.840 --> 00:48:33.519
Blade follows a half human, half-vampire warrior who dedicates his life to hunting vampires.
00:48:33.760 --> 00:48:45.440
Immune to many vampire weaknesses, but cursed with their thirst for blood, Blade wages war against a powerful vampire faction led by Deacon Frost, who seeks to unleash a vampire apocalypse.
00:48:46.400 --> 00:48:49.039
Blade reinvented the vampire genre.
00:48:49.199 --> 00:48:57.760
Instead of the gothic horror or romance, it turned vampires into action movie villains and introduced the modern leather-clad vampire aesthetic.
00:48:58.239 --> 00:49:07.920
It was also one of the first major Marvel movies, Marvel movie successes, and helped pave the way for the superhero boom that followed.
00:49:09.519 --> 00:49:32.480
By 1999, vampires had fractured into five major archetypes: the Dracula vampire, old world aristocrat, Gary Oldman, the Anne Rice vampire, beautiful, tragic, romantic, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, the Rebel Vampire, The Lost Boys, The Comedy Vampire, Count Vaughn Count.
00:49:32.800 --> 00:49:35.599
Ah, ah, once bitten.
00:49:35.840 --> 00:49:38.079
The action vampire, Blade.
00:49:39.679 --> 00:49:44.000
Um, I don't think I I don't I probably have seen Blade.
00:49:44.960 --> 00:49:46.159
I know I saw it.
00:49:46.320 --> 00:49:49.360
I don't think I saw it until like the past 10 years.
00:49:50.000 --> 00:49:56.000
Um, and I remember watching it, but it didn't leave any kind of impression on me.
00:49:56.320 --> 00:49:56.639
No.
00:49:58.960 --> 00:50:00.960
But you don't like superhero movies.
00:50:01.119 --> 00:50:01.840
I don't like superhero.
00:50:02.079 --> 00:50:02.800
That's probably when it's it.
00:50:02.960 --> 00:50:03.920
And I don't like vampires.
00:50:04.079 --> 00:50:04.320
Yeah.
00:50:04.960 --> 00:50:07.599
I like superhero movies, but not vampires.
00:50:10.480 --> 00:50:12.719
No vampires in my superhero.
00:50:13.039 --> 00:50:14.000
I don't like it.
00:50:14.079 --> 00:50:15.760
I don't like crossing crabs.
00:50:16.320 --> 00:50:17.119
Not right.
00:50:18.400 --> 00:50:23.760
I feel like I mean, I do enjoy the old like nosfer.
00:50:25.039 --> 00:50:25.679
Here's the thing.
00:50:25.920 --> 00:50:29.440
I have watched about 15 minutes of twilight.
00:50:30.159 --> 00:50:31.840
I was wondering if you were gonna bring that.
00:50:32.239 --> 00:50:34.719
No, no, they can't even stand any of those.
00:50:38.719 --> 00:50:39.679
They sparkle.
00:50:39.840 --> 00:50:42.719
You cannot fucking sparkle.
00:50:43.039 --> 00:50:44.480
You vampires don't sparkle.
00:50:44.639 --> 00:50:47.679
They don't they don't they can't go out in the light, so what's the point in having sparkles on you?
00:50:47.920 --> 00:50:48.400
You can't.
00:50:48.559 --> 00:50:50.400
They can because they just sparkle.
00:50:50.639 --> 00:50:51.599
Oh yeah.
00:50:51.760 --> 00:50:54.239
That's that they just no.
00:50:54.480 --> 00:50:56.159
I'm sorry, millennials.
00:50:56.239 --> 00:50:57.360
I hate your vampire.
00:51:00.000 --> 00:51:02.159
Every generation gets its monster.
00:51:02.239 --> 00:51:06.239
For boomers, it might have been Frankenstein or Frankenstein's monster.
00:51:06.639 --> 00:51:08.480
For millennials, it's zombies.
00:51:08.639 --> 00:51:11.280
For Gen X, it was undoubtedly vampires.
00:51:11.760 --> 00:51:14.079
Because the vampire matched the era.
00:51:14.800 --> 00:51:17.039
The Cold War created anxiety.
00:51:17.199 --> 00:51:22.400
The AIDS crisis changed cultural conversations about blood, disease, intimacy, and mortality.
00:51:22.800 --> 00:51:26.239
The rise of MTV emphasized style and image.
00:51:26.559 --> 00:51:28.400
Vampires fit perfectly.
00:51:29.119 --> 00:51:30.079
That is true.
00:51:30.320 --> 00:51:32.719
Unlike zombies, vampires were intelligent.
00:51:32.880 --> 00:51:35.039
Unlike slashers, they were charismatic.
00:51:35.119 --> 00:51:37.599
Unlike werewolves, they remained in control.
00:51:38.000 --> 00:51:43.760
Gen X vampires reflected the decade's fascination with identity, outsider culture, and rebellion.
00:51:45.199 --> 00:51:52.239
Sometimes they were villains, sometimes heroes, rock stars, comedians, sometimes Muppets teaching us arithmetic.
00:51:54.159 --> 00:51:57.440
The decades that followed continued to reinvent Dracula.
00:51:57.599 --> 00:52:01.280
The 2000s gave audience increasingly sympathetic vampires.
00:52:01.920 --> 00:52:02.239
No.
00:52:02.639 --> 00:52:07.360
The 2010s embraced vampire romance through franchises and television dramas.
00:52:07.519 --> 00:52:10.639
Streaming services introduced new interpretations.
00:52:10.880 --> 00:52:16.480
Comedy series like What We Do in the Shadows proved vampire satire remained alive and well.
00:52:16.559 --> 00:52:19.440
Now I do love what we do in the shadows.
00:52:19.840 --> 00:52:20.719
Hilarious.
00:52:20.960 --> 00:52:22.880
I've never seen I didn't even know what it was about.
00:52:23.039 --> 00:52:24.079
Oh my god, it's great.
00:52:24.239 --> 00:52:25.280
It's fucking hilarious.
00:52:25.519 --> 00:52:26.800
How how old is that?
00:52:27.039 --> 00:52:28.320
Is it been out for a long time?
00:52:28.559 --> 00:52:28.800
Yeah.
00:52:29.119 --> 00:52:29.440
Okay.
00:52:29.760 --> 00:52:33.280
I don't know when it started, but like it's it's pretty old.
00:52:33.360 --> 00:52:34.079
I mean not old old.
00:52:34.400 --> 00:52:37.280
I remember the name of it, but I never paid any mind to it.
00:52:37.360 --> 00:52:38.239
I didn't know what it was about.
00:52:38.480 --> 00:52:39.039
That's great.
00:52:39.199 --> 00:52:40.079
Oh, it's great.
00:52:40.239 --> 00:52:41.280
That's good.
00:52:41.679 --> 00:52:42.719
It's hilarious.
00:52:42.880 --> 00:52:45.440
The guy you will, I think you would actually like it.
00:52:45.679 --> 00:52:45.840
Okay.
00:52:46.000 --> 00:52:51.280
There's an energy vampire in there, and I know you you would love the energy vampire.
00:52:51.760 --> 00:52:52.559
I know it.
00:52:52.880 --> 00:52:58.400
Because he is great and reminds you of exactly what you're thinking.
00:53:00.400 --> 00:53:00.719
Oh.
00:53:03.519 --> 00:53:04.480
Exactly.
00:53:05.440 --> 00:53:06.320
Awesome.
00:53:06.559 --> 00:53:11.280
Nearly every modern vampire still owes something to the versions Gen X grew up with.
00:53:11.440 --> 00:53:13.440
The cool vampire comes from the 80s.
00:53:13.599 --> 00:53:15.599
The romantic vampire comes from the 90s.
00:53:15.760 --> 00:53:18.320
The tragic Vlad connection comes from Coppola.
00:53:18.639 --> 00:53:21.519
The playful vampire comes from Count Von Count.
00:53:21.840 --> 00:53:24.400
They are all descendants of the same immortal bloodline.
00:53:24.800 --> 00:53:28.320
Vlad the Impaler probably would not recognize his modern legacy.
00:53:28.480 --> 00:53:35.599
The historical Vlad was a warrior prince, a politician, and a brutal ruler trying to survive in a dangerous world.
00:53:35.760 --> 00:53:38.800
The fictional Dracula became something entirely different.
00:53:39.039 --> 00:53:48.719
He became a literary icon, a movie star, a Saturday morning cartoon guest, a romantic lead, a comedy character, a Halloween costume, a global brand.
00:53:48.880 --> 00:53:51.840
What makes Dracula unique is not that he survives.
00:53:52.000 --> 00:53:53.760
All fictional characters survive.
00:53:53.920 --> 00:53:57.519
What makes Dracula remarkable is that he constantly changes.
00:53:57.760 --> 00:54:00.400
Each generation creates the Dracula it needs.
00:54:00.559 --> 00:54:03.840
For Gen X, Dracula was at his most versatile.
00:54:04.000 --> 00:54:15.440
He could be terrifying in the monster squad, tragic in Branchoker's Dracula, hilarious in Dracula's Dead and Loving It, and charming in love at first bite, and educational on Sesame Street.
00:54:15.519 --> 00:54:18.079
That flexibility is why Dracula remains immortal.
00:54:18.239 --> 00:54:22.480
Vlad died more than five centuries ago, but Dracula never will.
00:54:37.760 --> 00:54:38.079
Okay.
00:54:38.559 --> 00:54:40.719
But there's a Scars Guard in it.
00:54:42.320 --> 00:54:43.679
That's always a plus.
00:54:44.079 --> 00:54:44.400
Oh.
00:54:47.360 --> 00:54:48.719
You see all of him.
00:54:48.960 --> 00:54:50.559
Oh yes.
00:54:50.800 --> 00:54:51.119
Okay.
00:54:51.440 --> 00:54:52.079
True blood.
00:54:52.239 --> 00:55:00.960
But like I said, it's it starts good, but then somewhere it goes off the rails.
00:55:01.199 --> 00:55:01.599
Gotcha.
00:55:01.760 --> 00:55:06.000
It gets to it's after like I think it's like the third season.
00:55:06.159 --> 00:55:07.920
And then by the end, you're just like, I just want this.
00:55:08.000 --> 00:55:12.800
I just need to keep watching because eventually it's gonna end and I need to see the end.
00:55:12.960 --> 00:55:16.000
Like that's just how the last like two seasons are.
00:55:16.079 --> 00:55:20.800
You're just like, I just need to get to the end of this just because but it is it is good.
00:55:20.960 --> 00:55:22.880
Um yeah.
00:55:23.280 --> 00:55:34.400
But they're um they are modern vampire living in the modern world, and they um it's a drug.
00:55:34.880 --> 00:55:43.039
Their vampire blood is a drug, and they're trying to integrate into like the people know that they are vampires.
00:55:43.199 --> 00:55:43.440
Okay.
00:55:43.599 --> 00:55:44.719
And their blood is a drug.
00:55:44.800 --> 00:55:46.800
I forget what uh what they call it.
00:55:47.039 --> 00:55:49.199
V I forget.
00:55:49.440 --> 00:55:58.159
But so they have and they have a nightclub and um they call them oh hold on.
00:55:58.719 --> 00:55:59.519
This is true.
00:56:00.239 --> 00:56:07.199
They they have they the groupies are called fangbangers, and I mean come on.
00:56:07.920 --> 00:56:09.599
Yeah, that's pr that's pretty awesome.
00:56:09.679 --> 00:56:14.559
That's that's a perfect it's it's Alexander Skarsgard is the one as the Skarsgard in it.
00:56:14.800 --> 00:56:15.599
It doesn't matter.
00:56:15.840 --> 00:56:21.760
You know, speaking of him this wicker movie.
00:56:22.880 --> 00:56:23.360
Wicker?
00:56:23.519 --> 00:56:26.320
Wicker Oh, the Tom Hanks I mean Tom Cruise one.
00:56:26.480 --> 00:56:27.599
No wicker.
00:56:27.760 --> 00:56:29.599
Oh was it the Skarsgard?
00:56:30.559 --> 00:56:32.079
He's made of Wicker.
00:56:32.400 --> 00:56:33.679
That's new, it's new?
00:56:33.840 --> 00:56:34.719
Yeah, where have you been?
00:56:34.800 --> 00:56:37.199
They have literally been playing the I don't know.
00:56:37.280 --> 00:56:40.559
The only stupid movie I see commercials for now is Clayface.
00:56:40.639 --> 00:56:41.920
No, which looks so dumb.
00:56:42.079 --> 00:56:55.599
This is Wicker, where this lady, I don't know when the century is supposed to be, but I guess she's like an old maid, and so she goes to um Peter Dinklage and has him make a husband for her out of Wicker.
00:56:55.840 --> 00:57:03.840
I know the concept sounds totally ridiculous, and I thought that too, but apparently it is amazing.
00:57:04.079 --> 00:57:06.320
Like everybody says, you gotta go see it.
00:57:06.400 --> 00:57:09.119
It's great and looks stupid, it looks terrible.
00:57:09.360 --> 00:57:10.159
It sounds horrible.
00:57:10.320 --> 00:57:15.760
It does, absolutely, but everybody's review is like you have to see it.
00:57:16.000 --> 00:57:16.960
I'll let you watch it first.
00:57:17.360 --> 00:57:18.079
I'm not gonna see it.
00:57:18.239 --> 00:57:25.840
I don't, I have no interest in it at all, but it does pique my interest because everybody is like, you gotta see it.
00:57:26.400 --> 00:57:28.559
But apparently it's very graphic.
00:57:28.800 --> 00:57:33.119
Okay, like apparently it's girl porn, from what I understand.
00:57:33.280 --> 00:57:36.480
It is like straight up girl porn.
00:57:36.639 --> 00:57:40.480
That's how I feel about Oceans 11 without the nudity.
00:57:40.719 --> 00:57:40.880
Yeah.
00:57:41.039 --> 00:57:44.000
Well, this is like it's yeah.
00:57:44.239 --> 00:57:48.880
Oh, so oh, so she has sex with the man.
00:57:49.039 --> 00:57:50.559
Like he straightens her out.
00:57:51.039 --> 00:57:52.320
That's what she says.
00:57:54.000 --> 00:57:57.440
It's and uh I g I don't know, but I have seen look it up.
00:57:57.760 --> 00:58:04.559
Well, they made that movie recently about that the what was it, the something of water?
00:58:05.039 --> 00:58:07.920
What's in somebody having sex with a fish in that movie?
00:58:08.159 --> 00:58:08.639
I don't know.
00:58:08.800 --> 00:58:10.239
Yeah, I'm trying to think of weird scene.
00:58:10.559 --> 00:58:12.239
You know what it says to me?
00:58:12.800 --> 00:58:16.239
It says to me that women are like, you know what?
00:58:16.320 --> 00:58:17.599
I don't want an actual man.
00:58:17.679 --> 00:58:20.559
I want one made of wicker that I can just put in the corner.
00:58:20.960 --> 00:58:22.719
Make him be quiet.
00:58:24.400 --> 00:58:37.280
Although I did see, you know, I know I've said this before, but technically, scientifically, men are no longer needed at all.
00:58:38.639 --> 00:58:40.800
You can make a clone if you want a baby.
00:58:40.880 --> 00:58:45.679
You can clone yourself, you can clone your friend and have your friend, you could there's yeah.
00:58:46.079 --> 00:58:52.159
I also heard today on the way down that um the birth rate is the lowest it's been like ever.
00:58:52.400 --> 00:58:52.800
Yes.
00:58:53.840 --> 00:59:05.760
Um we don't even want so they apparently in lab they have created testicles and they're developing the ability to make sperm in them.
00:59:06.079 --> 00:59:06.719
Amazing.
00:59:06.880 --> 00:59:12.719
And I was like, you do know that you are replacing yourself, right?
00:59:12.880 --> 00:59:15.760
Like you keep going down this road.
00:59:16.000 --> 00:59:18.159
It's the eliminating reproduction.
00:59:18.320 --> 00:59:20.079
Yeah, you're eliminating yourself.
00:59:20.159 --> 00:59:21.280
You already eliminated yourself.
00:59:21.519 --> 00:59:22.800
It's time for us to rise up, girls.
00:59:22.880 --> 00:59:23.199
Let's go.
00:59:23.440 --> 00:59:24.800
That's what I'm saying.
00:59:26.239 --> 00:59:27.760
It's it's it's over for them.
00:59:27.920 --> 00:59:31.360
Like they just invented every way to get rid of themselves.
00:59:31.599 --> 00:59:32.000
Yeah, yeah.
00:59:32.159 --> 00:59:35.039
To to we it's it's it's I love it.
00:59:35.119 --> 00:59:36.159
Let's let's harness it.
00:59:36.320 --> 00:59:37.599
I just think it's hilarious.
00:59:37.760 --> 00:59:41.039
And it's like, did you not think this all the way through when you were inventing this?
00:59:41.199 --> 00:59:44.559
Like when you cloned something, were you not like, oh, wait a minute?
00:59:45.920 --> 00:59:53.599
If the women knew that they could just clone, the only that it's just because we've been kept down, and all there's more of us too.
00:59:53.920 --> 00:59:57.519
There is more women on this planet than there are men, and we live longer.
00:59:57.679 --> 00:59:58.079
Yep.
00:59:58.639 --> 01:00:05.039
They just they're they're keeping us down by telling us we're inferior.
01:00:05.840 --> 01:00:06.559
We're not.
01:00:06.880 --> 01:00:07.199
No.
01:00:08.000 --> 01:00:12.320
I've seen all those men do the period simulators and they can't even get past five.
01:00:12.559 --> 01:00:13.440
Yeah, I know.
01:00:13.599 --> 01:00:15.280
Then they're like freaking the fuck out.
01:00:15.679 --> 01:00:17.360
Forget about the birthing ones.
01:00:17.599 --> 01:00:18.639
Oh my god, yeah.
01:00:18.800 --> 01:00:21.280
Those are hilarious to watch.
01:00:24.639 --> 01:00:25.039
Ugh.
01:00:25.199 --> 01:00:29.280
The period simulator simulators are just yeah, I love them.
01:00:29.440 --> 01:00:37.840
I would like to get one just to see how close it is because I had horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible periods.
01:00:38.000 --> 01:00:39.119
And that's just the cramps.
01:00:39.280 --> 01:00:41.360
That's not factoring in all the other garbage development.
01:00:41.599 --> 01:00:43.599
That's exactly what I was thinking about the birthing thing.
01:00:43.920 --> 01:00:49.280
You're just feeling the cramping and you're you're not getting ripped open as a creature comes out of you.
01:00:49.519 --> 01:00:52.559
Like, yeah, but definitely I I did too.
01:00:52.719 --> 01:00:54.800
That's why I got an IUD like 10 years ago.
01:00:54.880 --> 01:00:56.719
Yeah, simply because of the cramps.
01:00:57.119 --> 01:00:59.679
I was my tubes were tied, I wasn't having any more kids.
01:00:59.840 --> 01:01:02.000
Yeah, it was it was it was brutal.
01:01:02.400 --> 01:01:03.280
They were brutal.
01:01:03.440 --> 01:01:04.079
Yeah.
01:01:05.519 --> 01:01:07.920
Anyway, that's my vampires.
01:01:08.159 --> 01:01:09.280
That was super fun.
01:01:09.440 --> 01:01:11.840
I figured for Halloween, I love it.
01:01:12.079 --> 01:01:16.480
We would well, the funny thing is I yelled at you because I was like, how could you not know?
01:01:16.559 --> 01:01:20.719
But it never even occurred to me that you might do a Halloween episode this week.
01:01:21.280 --> 01:01:27.280
So well, I remember last year we ch we switched it up so that I could have Halloween.
01:01:27.440 --> 01:01:28.159
We did, yeah.
01:01:28.400 --> 01:01:30.480
And then probably we'll have to do that again next year.
01:01:30.639 --> 01:01:31.199
Yeah.
01:01:31.519 --> 01:01:41.360
I should start thinking my because well, I was gonna do monster movies, and then I was like, let's just concentrate because again, we'll be here a yeah.
01:01:41.599 --> 01:01:45.360
But what is the most influential of Gen X?
01:01:45.519 --> 01:01:47.280
And it hands down has to be a vampire.
01:01:47.519 --> 01:01:48.159
A million percent.
01:01:48.320 --> 01:01:52.239
Like I think of like werewolf movies like a handful, maybe.
01:01:52.400 --> 01:01:54.239
Yeah, it was um the Michael J.
01:01:54.400 --> 01:01:57.599
Fox one and Teen Wolf.
01:01:57.760 --> 01:01:59.519
Yeah, American Werewolf in London.
01:01:59.679 --> 01:02:01.360
That's what the next one I was gonna say.
01:02:01.599 --> 01:02:06.800
Um then you really get you kind of go off.
01:02:08.000 --> 01:02:08.320
Yeah.
01:02:08.559 --> 01:02:16.079
I mean, and Frankenstein's monster's been done a hundred times, but still everybody references the OG black and white one.
01:02:16.159 --> 01:02:18.159
Like, yeah, it's not like any of those really stuck.
01:02:18.400 --> 01:02:19.039
Yeah.
01:02:19.440 --> 01:02:23.679
And I I can't even think of any that like no, I can't.
01:02:24.000 --> 01:02:24.960
So I don't know.
01:02:25.199 --> 01:02:26.159
Yeah, for sure.
01:02:26.320 --> 01:02:27.679
Vampires, definitely.
01:02:28.079 --> 01:02:30.239
Definitely, they're just so cool.
01:02:30.480 --> 01:02:31.119
Yeah.
01:02:31.679 --> 01:02:32.239
All right.
01:02:32.480 --> 01:02:33.199
Well, okay.
01:02:33.280 --> 01:02:35.679
Well, thank you so much, and happy Halloween again to everyone.

01:02:39.360 --> 01:02:40.960
Uh Devil's Night.
01:02:41.199 --> 01:02:41.599
Mm-hmm.
01:02:42.239 --> 01:02:43.519
Oh, one other thing, also.
01:02:43.679 --> 01:02:43.920
Okay.
01:02:44.239 --> 01:02:44.960
