Now let's jump right in.
00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:30.160
Hey, welcome to Let's Talk About Pools Live Podcast, August 4th already.
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:32.799
God, the the summer just blew by, Rob.
00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:34.640
It it did.
00:00:34.719 --> 00:00:41.920
It started off really super slow and then all of a sudden it just like a roller coaster just hit that steep slope and away we went.
00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:44.079
I know.
00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:46.560
It's amazing how fast it goes.
00:00:46.880 --> 00:00:53.359
So, first thing I want to do is uh as you saw, we have a great sponsor for our podcast.
00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:55.679
So I want to acknowledge Pool Brain.
00:00:55.759 --> 00:00:58.399
Thank you for being an awesome podcast sponsor.
00:00:58.479 --> 00:01:05.920
So let's listen in to what they have to offer for our Pool Service Pros, and then we'll jump right into this uh live podcast episode.
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:15.040
Well, why don't you just do Fulbright because we can do it all?
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:16.640
Absolutely love Fulbright.
00:01:16.719 --> 00:01:18.560
There's not a better app on the market.
00:01:18.799 --> 00:01:22.000
We've tested a ton of different ones and windows on Fulbright for weeks.
00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:08.639
It's a stuff.
00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:15.599
So, like I promised on the last episode, I would I went and I checked out Full Brain to see how it would apply to like my business kind of thing.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.400
And it just offers so much.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:28.639
I mean, uh I can see, you know, like if you had like 10 crews out there, stuff like that, everything under one umbrella, it totally, totally makes sense.
00:02:28.879 --> 00:02:36.000
It's way too much for the scope of my company, unfortunately, because I would have loved to give it a kick, but it's just way too much for my company.
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:38.800
But you know, bigger companies, absolutely for sure.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:42.800
I could see this uh just going through all the benefits and stuff.
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:47.759
Yeah, yeah, it it they're really in tune with really big companies.
00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:53.199
They have some that have like, God, I forget the number of pool techs they have, it's amazing.
00:02:53.439 --> 00:03:05.439
And the integrations, I I just met with Ket uh Kevin with uh Pool Brain and it the new integration with Penthair, that that was really game-changing there.
00:03:05.599 --> 00:03:07.840
Um yeah, I saw something about that.
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:13.039
Yeah, check them out and see what they have to offer and see if they're a great fit for you guys.
00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:14.319
So let's jump right in.
00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:18.240
I want to uh, you know, Rob is my awesome co-anchor.
00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:27.199
He comes here every two weeks with me and banters with me back and forth, and I want to say thank you for joining with me on the uh live podcast, Rob.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:29.120
Oh well, thanks for inviting me back.
00:03:29.199 --> 00:03:31.759
I you know, I love being here, I love chatting with you.
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:38.960
So, you know, plus it's a nice uh it's a nice little break uh from actually having to work for a change.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:44.639
So and and pretty soon I'm getting him a shirt, guys.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:47.680
So he's gonna have the same shirt as me so we can match.
00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:50.879
He's gonna have a nice collared shirt that he wanted.
00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:52.639
So that's on order.
00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:53.919
That's coming soon for you.
00:03:54.080 --> 00:03:57.280
And pretty soon pretty soon on the website.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:00.240
Any listeners are really excited about the podcast.
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:03.759
Uh, I'll be linking up uh a little page.
00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:12.319
There'll be like you can go straight to Rev-Up Apparel and you can buy any shirts that you like with the podcast, and that's what you're into.
00:04:13.919 --> 00:04:20.959
So we are live on uh Instagram as well, and we have a couple people on there that have joined us.
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:26.959
Aqua John's, hello, want to say hi to you, and Jocelyn's has joined as well.
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:28.319
So stay on, listen.
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:30.560
We're we have a lot to talk about today.
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:34.000
Um, first thing, what do we want to bring up, Rob?
00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:35.600
What were we gonna talk about first?
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:36.720
That ends tomorrow.
00:04:36.959 --> 00:04:42.720
That explosive lettuce diarrhea stuff that everybody's all uh that's not ending tomorrow.
00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:52.879
Oh, that oh yeah, no, no, I I it'd be nice if it would end tomorrow, but no, we're talking uh you're talking about uh the Pool Nation award nominations.
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:54.319
Yes, that ends tomorrow.
00:04:55.360 --> 00:04:58.480
Yes, that our friends at Pool Nation.
00:04:58.720 --> 00:05:04.240
Hi Edgar, hi John Flawless, and Zach and everybody out there.
00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:06.879
Uh they had an awesome live podcast this week.
00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:18.319
I listened to, I think it was Joey Garcia uh or Joe Garcia with Lion Financial is an awesome podcast, but looking forward to seeing who gets nominated.
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:22.000
Uh so get out there because it ends tomorrow, as Rob said.
00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:22.879
Nominate.
00:05:22.959 --> 00:05:24.480
There's so many categories.
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:34.160
And then uh we'll find out who's nominated on the evening of August nineteenth when they announce it live on uh social media.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:37.759
So listen in to see if you made the list, if you made the cut there.
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:42.639
Um I'll be there listening and just sitting in the audience.
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.639
So I'll be there live, but you won't see me on camera, I don't think.
00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:52.800
But I'm gonna be out there waiting in anticipation to see who gets nominated.
00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:54.399
So they'll find you.
00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:56.560
They'll find you in the audience, don't worry.
00:05:56.879 --> 00:06:00.720
There's some awesome pool pros, awesome pool products out there.
00:06:00.879 --> 00:06:12.240
Uh I even want to I'm gonna have Aquastar on soon on the regular episodes of the podcast, and uh have Todd Pieri and all them on.
00:06:12.319 --> 00:06:22.639
They're awesome over there, and they're an educational sponsor uh for Space Coast Pool School, so wanna reach out to them because they're a diamond partner and say thank you.
00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:28.639
Supporting education in the industry is very, very important.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:29.680
Right, Rob?
00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:31.600
Absolutely.
00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:33.759
So we we did that.
00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:42.160
Uh the other oh, I mean, this is just a month of pool nation stuff, so might as well mention uh the women's summits coming up, the pool nation woman summit.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:43.519
I'm all hyped up for it.
00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:49.600
I'm sure if you're all on social media, Yuri saw my beautiful hair that I got done yesterday.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:51.680
It's still nice and straight, too.
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:56.399
So I went ahead and got a flat iron so I can keep it looking nice and straight.
00:06:56.480 --> 00:06:57.839
I really like this look.
00:06:57.920 --> 00:06:59.759
So I got mine done as well.
00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:03.839
Uh for all of you who didn't notice that I it looks so great, Rob.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:05.279
It looks beautiful.
00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:06.319
Let's see, let's see how much.
00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:09.839
Well, I haven't I get a free bowl of soup when I get my hair cut like this.
00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:16.319
Rob's hair, guys.
00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:18.079
Rob's hair.
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:20.079
Yeah.
00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:21.600
Great, great haircut.
00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:23.439
You beat me you beat me right there.
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:26.480
But I I got I'm getting ready for the woman's summit.
00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:29.360
Have to look nice and kind of pretty.
00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:34.160
The one I really go out for is the uh when I go to the Pool Nation Awards.
00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:35.439
That's like red carpet.
00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:37.360
I get super excited about that.
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:41.600
I usually uh divulge the color I'm wearing by how, Rob.
00:07:41.839 --> 00:07:42.879
Do you remember?
00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:46.079
Uh I think you sent me a string of pictures.
00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:48.079
Uh I sent you pictures.
00:07:48.160 --> 00:07:48.800
You're special.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:50.319
You get to see what I'm wearing.
00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:54.639
But the rest of everybody else doesn't know yet, so don't divulge the color yet.
00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:56.480
I won't say anything.
00:07:56.879 --> 00:08:04.399
A week or two before the Pull Nation Awards, which will be in November this year, I will get my nails done about a week before.
00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:12.240
And I will just take a picture of my fingernails, and that will tell you the color that I am wearing to the Pull Nation Awards.
00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:15.279
Oh, jeez, you sound like a 16-year-old girl.
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:19.759
Try and piece together the clues so that you can figure out what I'm up to.
00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:40.879
Alright, so let's get into we've got all our stuff in the beginning there, and now I want to really get into our serious topics that we want to talk about, and and one that's kind of you know made the news a lot, just saw it on the news this morning.
00:08:41.120 --> 00:08:44.799
I always watch the news from the previous night stream the next day.
00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:46.559
I know, isn't that wonderful?
00:08:46.799 --> 00:08:56.080
And so the statistics I just got recently, and this is a cyclosphora, the explosive diarrhea we're talking about that people have had.
00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:06.320
The statistics as of the news reporting from last night is that they there's more than 18,000 reported cases.
00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:12.000
So these are people who tested positive who went to a lab and tested.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:15.200
There are lots of cases we don't know about.
00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:16.960
That's true, public health, okay.
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:21.120
18,000 cases across 45 states in the United States.
00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:46.159
And they've had their first two reported deaths in Michigan from cyclosphora, but the two people were what we call immunocompromised, meaning they had other underlying conditions that if they're elderly or anything else, anything, you know, dehydration from that kind of explosive diarrhea can kill certain people, depending on what underlying conditions they have.
00:09:46.320 --> 00:09:56.960
So it wasn't like it was a young person with no, you know, back history of anything going on or anything like that, but this it's still not good, right?
00:09:57.840 --> 00:10:02.720
Well, when people start dying, no, it's absolutely not, you know, and they have to take that real serious.
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:12.399
And I I'm gonna mention my spouse here, my husband, Ben, who turns 50 Friday, guys, coming an old man.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:17.600
Uh he asked this because we know you're from Canada, Rob.
00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:21.919
So we know the stabs, and we've heard about it here in the United States, Europe, and Canada.
00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:27.840
Are you guys seeing the Cyclospore up there the same way we are down here in the States?
00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:34.399
Uh, to be quite honest with you, Lauren, I have not watched the news in about 30 years.
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:41.360
So uh, you know, it's hard enough going through a day, uh, the days as it is.
00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:44.159
Uh so no, I don't I don't follow any of that kind of stuff.
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:47.200
What I see, I see on social media, which is what everybody sees.
00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:52.159
Um, so unfortunately, I can't that's an awesome question.
00:10:52.320 --> 00:11:01.759
I would I would imagine, I would imagine, okay, so I had seen an article where they had tied it back to lettuce from a certain producer that goes to a certain franchise.
00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:09.279
We have that franchise in Canada, so it's completely understandable that you know our stuff would be affected as well.
00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:19.120
Now, in in the city where I live, Ottawa, um, because of the way they do their splash pads, it's not going to spread through that.
00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:23.279
So it's going to have to spread through other means, all right, such as public pools.
00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:34.159
Well, a lot of splash pads, as you know, you have to have uh circulation, filtration, sanitation, the whole thing, and they use that same water that's recirculated.
00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:43.840
In Ottawa, they don't use recirculated water, they take it right out of the drinking system, it hits the ground, and then it goes right back out to the plant for uh treatment again.
00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:50.080
So there's no filtration, there's no uh circulation, there's no none of that stuff on our splash pads.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:12:03.679
Well, and and I'm gonna say that I think more in the states, especially the Sunbelt states that have splash pads, they're gonna have recirculated water, which is why it's more of a topic to talk about because ours operate year-round.
00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:08.320
And so losing the water, you're paying for water, and then you're paying for the wastewater.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:16.000
It's recirculating it makes more sense, but that's where you have the higher risk of illness if you don't have the circulation infiltration.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:30.159
So, yes, experts are talking about it, it's very resistant to chlorine, uh, or bleach as we want to call it, which makes it more difficult to eliminate from a swimming pool or splash pad.
00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:36.799
And we know, I mean, when I worked for the health agency, there was a name we had for splash pads.
00:12:36.879 --> 00:12:38.080
We call them baby today.
00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:47.600
Little kids just put their little beehinds over the spray feature and it goes right up their their swim diaper and then they like to drink the water.
00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:54.080
So splash pads are such hotbeds for uh outbreaks a lot of times, especially crypto and stuff like that.
00:12:54.159 --> 00:13:01.120
I've seen Salmonella um is because of the habits of the majority of the population that uses it.
00:13:01.360 --> 00:13:15.360
Their habits of putting their butts over, they're not usually fully potty trained, they so they got a load in their, you know, and they may have diarrhea and they don't know how to tell their parents they have diarrhea and they drink the water that's being recirculated.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:29.120
So, you know, between the feces and everything else and the young children, and it's hard to kill with chlorine, it that's the big deal why kind of people were trying to talk about it when it came to our industry.
00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:32.799
But I'm gonna say that it's not as likely.
00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:42.720
There's not a lot of uh outbreaks and studies, especially in the States, with cyclosphora within pools and and splash pads and stuff like that.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:47.759
It's really a ready-to-eat food item type thing, so that's relieving.
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:49.759
Which makes sense with the lettuce.
00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.200
It is known as the, you know, commonly spread through lettuce, and it's you know how it's spread?
00:13:56.000 --> 00:14:03.840
It's spread from people's w waste that's it it gets spread over at the farm usually and it contaminates it.
00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:26.000
And the big way to prevent getting it wash your produce before you cut it or do anything, even if it's pre-washed salad in a bag pre-packaged, they say wash it still, because it's not guaranteed that cutting process somewhere along the line, it can get contaminated, and washing it will reduce the effective dose.
00:14:26.320 --> 00:14:30.559
All I know is chocolate is safer to eat than lettuce right now, so I'm all in.
00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:37.440
Yeah, if you really want to lose weight, maybe get some cyclospora, but I don't do not do that.
00:14:37.679 --> 00:14:39.600
That is not a good way to do it.
00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:42.639
It's uh it you're peeing from your butt, guys.
00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:47.120
It is treatable with antibiotics, and early detection is very important.
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:57.440
But the interesting thing that makes it hard is it can take up to two weeks sometimes to sh from when you ingest it to you show illness.
00:14:57.840 --> 00:15:13.039
And so that's a long period of time, which makes it hard to contact trace where it started, and that's why it's gotten so big out of an outbreak, is because it came from a very large farm supplier that supplies a lot of different places.
00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:19.679
And so trying to get people to remember where they ate yesterday is really hard.
00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:25.120
Ask them what they ate a week ago or two weeks ago, they're not gonna remember it.
00:15:25.200 --> 00:15:26.000
It's very hard.
00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:35.679
The longer Well, plus at this time of year it's it's hot and everybody is enjoying the water features and stuff like that, and people are all on vacation, so they're traveling all over the place.
00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:36.559
Yep.
00:15:36.799 --> 00:15:44.639
So according to Cleveland Clinic, they say the illness could be spread through contain, you know, obviously through contaminated food and water.
00:15:44.879 --> 00:15:50.480
So if it can be spread through water that is even sprayed, you know, then we ingest it.
00:15:50.559 --> 00:15:55.840
If somebody's ill, I mean, there's still a possibility that it can be spread through swimming pools, hot tubs, and lakes.
00:15:55.919 --> 00:15:57.759
Let's not take that out completely.
00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:02.080
But the risk is kind of lower compared to cryptosporidium, even.
00:16:02.639 --> 00:16:14.240
So officials say it's important that if you have diarrhea, period, doesn't even matter if you've been diagnosed, don't be in recreational waters where you're getting hardly circulated.
00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:16.960
That's how we spread illness no matter what it is.
00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:19.519
Cryptosporidium doesn't matter.
00:16:19.840 --> 00:16:25.200
So this is why a lot of health agencies will require signage, like Florida does.
00:16:25.279 --> 00:16:33.759
They added signage, do not swallow the water, it's recirculated, and it's required on splash pads, and I believe on pool signs now.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:39.759
Um it says uh if you're ill with diarrhea, don't go swimming, basically.
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:41.759
We they love that one on the sign.
00:16:41.840 --> 00:16:47.759
That that word diarrhea to people on on the pool rules sign on a public pool down here in Florida, they love it.
00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:51.600
Well, it's sad that it's not common sense and people have to be told.
00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:52.879
Yep.
00:16:53.200 --> 00:16:55.919
Wash your hands, wash your hands frequently.
00:16:56.080 --> 00:17:00.240
You go to the bathroom, wash your hands before you go back into a public facility, please.
00:17:00.480 --> 00:17:07.200
Wash it well, not this quick thing that you do with soap and or you know, really quick and you're done.
00:17:07.440 --> 00:17:18.079
Um that's I I kind of determine that when I'm at an airport and the line for the woman's room is out the hall into the hall and the men's room has no line.
00:17:18.160 --> 00:17:19.200
I'm like, why?
00:17:19.359 --> 00:17:26.720
I know one reason why, but the other reason is I think in my head, do they wash their hands?
00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:28.079
You know?
00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:33.839
Well, no, it's because if everybody had to sit, you gotta remember we have like 15-year-olds that don't take extra space.
00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:46.160
So if we had every single guy going into the men's room have to sit down to use the washroom, uh sure would raise the sanitary level of that room, but it would also slow things down.
00:17:46.400 --> 00:17:57.440
I think I worked in public health, and my nine-year-old son, I'll still catch him trying to come out of the bathroom, and he hasn't washed his hands, and I have to send him back and he gets mad at me.
00:17:57.680 --> 00:18:01.599
So I have a kid that does it, and I work in public health.
00:18:01.759 --> 00:18:13.759
I guarantee it's happening a lot at our public facilities, pools and hot tubs and splash pads where they're going to that bathroom by the facility and they're not washing their hands so they come out.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:15.599
They think I'm just going back in the water.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:16.240
Right?
00:18:17.680 --> 00:18:19.599
So I saw an interesting post.
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:21.839
I like to give credit when credit is due.
00:18:21.920 --> 00:18:23.359
This is Dewey Case.
00:18:23.599 --> 00:18:36.480
He works uh in the aquatic industry for a very long time, very involved with the Association of Aquatic Professionals and the CDC model aquatic health coaches.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:41.200
And he had made a post about cyclospora and had a lot of good information.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:43.680
And he he said what about pools?
00:18:43.920 --> 00:18:48.480
He said information is limited for pools and cyclosphora.
00:18:48.960 --> 00:18:54.480
Um, but he did find a couple little things, you know, that it takes a lot of chlorine to kill it.
00:18:54.880 --> 00:18:57.440
The size and then it got into the filter even.
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:04.160
So the size of Cyclospora oosis, because remember it's a parasite, so it has an oosis like crypto.
00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:08.720
It is about 7.5 to 10 microns in size.
00:19:08.880 --> 00:19:14.480
So sand filters without a coagulant will likely not capture the oosis.
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:25.680
And he stated uh in this uh post that older and dirtier sand media will have a better success of capturing it.
00:19:26.480 --> 00:19:32.319
Cartridge filters will be more successful depending on the condition of the cartridge.
00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:41.039
And then he went on to DE and Paralyte, which will capture the oasis because they can they filter down to like four microns.
00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:44.720
So this was from uh Yeager et al.
00:19:45.119 --> 00:20:01.359
uh kind of study that he found online found that sand-based pool filters captured 82% of a proxy pathogen for cyclosphora without coagulants, additives, or secondary filtration.
00:20:01.839 --> 00:20:14.799
So kind of interesting that we're not talking about just the amount of disinfection, but also being able to filter out the oosis, which is part of the life cycle, which is why crypto is so hard to kill, too, right?
00:20:15.119 --> 00:20:28.240
Yeah, well now a lot of people are switching from uh sand filter media to glass filter media, and I've seen reports in some cases where the sand or the excuse me, the glass filter media will filter down to four microns as well.
00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:34.799
So, I mean, if you've upgraded from your regular sand to a glass media, you might have better protection than you think.
00:20:35.119 --> 00:20:39.440
Yeah, it's that micron size that it's gonna filter down to, which is awesome.
00:20:39.920 --> 00:20:53.119
Um, so of course, as we said, cyclospora takes one to two weeks to mature to its infectious stage, and it so person-to-person transmission per CDC is very unlikely.
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:56.160
It's a fecal oral type route, okay?
00:20:56.559 --> 00:21:01.119
Can't contaminate and you know, get it into your body somehow.
00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:06.400
Uh ingest it with just a little bit of water on your lips, anything like that while you're swimming.
00:21:06.880 --> 00:21:13.839
Um he stated from multiple non-CDC commission studies, so it means not they're not commissioned by the CDC.
00:21:14.319 --> 00:21:23.119
It appears it's unlikely to be present in solid stool, but it it is a cause of diarrhea in humans, so it'd be present in the fecal matter of infected people.
00:21:23.759 --> 00:21:37.039
Um he cited a 2017 vanilla study that's again not commissioned by the CDC that found that cyclospore oosis can survive in water for up to two months, depending on temperature of the water.
00:21:37.279 --> 00:21:37.519
Yeah.
00:21:38.400 --> 00:21:40.079
Interesting information, isn't it?
00:21:40.400 --> 00:21:43.119
Uh this is all Dewey Case guys, he's an awesome guy.
00:21:43.359 --> 00:21:48.480
He has, I think the C the center the Model Aquatic Health Code has their own podcast as well.
00:21:49.039 --> 00:21:56.160
Um he's been on Rudy's podcast about uh recreational water illnesses and the Mac and stuff like that.
00:21:56.640 --> 00:21:59.599
Another study talked about the disinfection.
00:21:59.680 --> 00:22:04.480
So So he he goes, This is what I would call discouraging results.
00:22:04.960 --> 00:22:12.319
An approximate one log reduction, which is not a lot, was reached at 50 parts per million of chlorine.
00:22:13.039 --> 00:22:13.440
5.0.
00:22:14.559 --> 00:22:15.599
Yeah, 5-0.
00:22:16.799 --> 00:22:23.920
And a 200 ppm concentration of chlorine, we saw a 2.5 log reduction of cyclospora.
00:22:24.160 --> 00:22:34.720
So the parasite is unaffected by normal chlorine ppm values that we would keep in a normal public pool and by most health jurisdictions.
00:22:35.039 --> 00:22:47.440
So hyperchlorination to those levels showing any significant significant inactivation are very gonna be very challenging for our pools, the pool equipment, and for our pool operators.
00:22:48.079 --> 00:23:03.839
So, I mean, what is what does this mean as we talked about apart from and he talked about there was this one Nepalese study from Nepal, I believe, that there's no evidence linking swimming pools to the spread of cyclospora otherwise.
00:23:03.920 --> 00:23:07.440
There's this one study he found that because they're in Nepal.
00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:09.440
Right, they're in Nepal.
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:12.000
So it's a they don't have swimming pools, do they?
00:23:12.559 --> 00:23:20.559
So, other than that, there's not been evidence really linking swimming pools to the spread of cyclospora.
00:23:20.799 --> 00:23:40.640
The research is limited though, and the explosive diarrhea found what cyclosporosporosis, which is the condition you get, the illness you get from cyclospore, is likely limiting to participating in swimming activities treated what treated and filtered, being filtered out.
00:23:40.799 --> 00:23:49.359
So we're talking remember, we brought up filters, we've brought up chlorine, we brought up it's really more a food item, ready-to-eat food item.
00:23:49.519 --> 00:23:50.559
Let's bring that up.
00:23:50.960 --> 00:24:01.519
So he he said, just keep what you're doing, no reason to get all ups, you know, oh my god, you know, we're all gonna die, kind of a level, you know, and I agree.
00:24:01.920 --> 00:24:11.519
But if you're renovating or updating equipment, give more consideration to your filtered designs so they can capture smaller than 10 microns.
00:24:11.839 --> 00:24:21.759
Give stronger consideration to installing secondary treatment systems like UV, ozone, or AOP.
00:24:22.400 --> 00:24:25.920
And I was just have I was waiting for a break in the conversation to bring that up.
00:24:26.079 --> 00:24:32.240
I wonder what you know, for example, Dave Rockwell would say, he deals with AOP on on the regular basis.
00:24:32.400 --> 00:24:38.400
I wonder how much studies are being done to see how effective AOP is as far as treating this goes.
00:24:38.720 --> 00:24:39.200
Yep.
00:24:39.440 --> 00:24:49.359
And I will be interviewing uh Tom Schaefer coming up from uh Clear Comfort, which they're a leading company as well for AOP.
00:24:49.920 --> 00:24:59.759
And they even have a really interesting study we're gonna talk about on a future episode that'll be on with him uh with Department of Energy, which is has nothing to do with this.
00:24:59.839 --> 00:25:04.480
But secondary disinfection is kind of something interesting to talk about.
00:25:04.720 --> 00:25:24.799
It would really increase uh or increase our being ready for public health in this way that we're talking about, but decrease our outbreaks because they're really good and they these type of secondary disinfection systems are really good at inactivating Cryptosporidanus as well.
00:25:25.359 --> 00:25:29.680
And so you still have your chlorine residual floating around where people are swimming.
00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:38.640
We both know secondary disinfection doesn't leave a residual, which is why it's not really you can't really test it as easily, you don't know what's there.
00:25:38.880 --> 00:25:41.119
You gotta know that there's something there.
00:25:41.279 --> 00:25:48.720
So when you have chlorine primary disinfection and some one of these secondary disinfection systems, this will really help.
00:25:49.279 --> 00:25:58.880
So, as he said, if you have or had diarrhea in the last two weeks, don't we teach that somewhere, Rob, in the last two weeks?
00:25:59.039 --> 00:26:02.000
If you've had diarrhea, what what what do you want to do?
00:26:02.160 --> 00:26:04.799
Do you want to go swimming or not go swimming?
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:09.119
Um, I don't go swimming in public pools uh right off the hop.
00:26:09.200 --> 00:26:13.680
Uh, this is just another line on my list of reasons that Rob doesn't go into public pools.
00:26:13.839 --> 00:26:18.319
Um, but obviously, yeah, if you're if you're not feeling well, stay away from the general public.
00:26:18.480 --> 00:26:20.480
Nobody wants to put up with your stuff.
00:26:20.640 --> 00:26:26.480
Uh, you know, there's you know, uh, it's just you're putting everybody else at risk.
00:26:26.559 --> 00:26:27.359
Why do it?
00:26:27.680 --> 00:26:28.319
Yep.
00:26:28.720 --> 00:26:38.640
And when I interviewed, because I did interviewing of all these recreational water illnesses when I worked for the Florida Health Agency down here for the Florida Department of Health.
00:26:38.880 --> 00:26:42.960
And I did everything from cryptosporidium.
00:26:43.119 --> 00:26:45.519
We had two at the summer of 2007.
00:26:45.599 --> 00:26:48.160
We called it at the health department, the summer poop.
00:26:48.720 --> 00:26:55.759
We had so third like 33 confirmed cases, which normally we'd have like way less than that.
00:26:56.160 --> 00:26:59.759
Um, and it was determined started in a splash pad.
00:27:00.319 --> 00:27:06.640
So, and it was a child, and it and it spread through more children, and then it actually spread through, I believe, a child care center.
00:27:06.799 --> 00:27:11.119
So it can spread outside of the aquatic venue after.
00:27:11.200 --> 00:27:12.319
That's the big deal.
00:27:12.559 --> 00:27:16.640
We did contact tracing, kind of like you everybody knew from COVID.
00:27:17.039 --> 00:27:20.799
Everybody knew that word, contact those two words, contact tracing.
00:27:21.039 --> 00:27:23.759
The annoying public health people that kept calling you.
00:27:24.400 --> 00:27:25.279
Are you sick yet?
00:27:25.440 --> 00:27:26.319
Are you sick yet?
00:27:26.480 --> 00:27:27.759
Stop calling me.
00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:30.400
I got hung up so many times during COVID.
00:27:30.640 --> 00:27:34.240
I worked the first six months of COVID, I got hung up on so many times.
00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:38.720
But it's important what public health is doing, and they've always done it.
00:27:38.799 --> 00:28:02.960
There's a reportable disease list of certain things that could turn into a very pretty big outbreak, and this is what they do, and they are trying to keep people from getting sick, trying to keep people from dying, because if you reduce the number of people, you can't stop it altogether, but you're trying to reduce the statistics how many people are gonna get it by doing contact tracing and finding the root source and stopping it, right?
00:28:03.440 --> 00:28:04.000
Right.
00:28:04.240 --> 00:28:11.519
And so well during COVID, I had uh provincial police parked in my laneway for a few days, and that's the same as your like state troopers.
00:28:11.759 --> 00:28:15.279
Uh so that yeah, that was an exciting, uh, exciting time.
00:28:15.519 --> 00:28:16.640
Glad it's over.
00:28:16.960 --> 00:28:17.359
All right.
00:28:17.440 --> 00:28:18.480
I saw this article.
00:28:18.640 --> 00:28:22.880
I like to bring up service industry news, uh great partner with me.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:25.440
I write for them on a quarterly basis.
00:28:25.599 --> 00:28:29.680
I've been writing for them for like six years, so please check out their articles.
00:28:29.759 --> 00:28:33.839
They're a full online publication for the pool service industry.
00:28:34.079 --> 00:28:37.519
And their article, they've put everything in there, all kinds of stuff.
00:28:37.680 --> 00:28:42.000
I saw this and kind of like was putting it with after the cyclosphora here.
00:28:42.400 --> 00:29:11.039
And I saw that they had put in an article about a competition pool, which is a public pool owned by a city in the state of Alabama, it's an aquatic center, and they decided they were gonna ban all children ages one to four instead of opting for that prevention strategy instead of just relying on cleanup procedures after fecal accidents occur.
00:29:12.960 --> 00:29:27.440
I think this has uh gotten, you know, some people probably over there upset because on the other side we worry about the children not being able to get swim lessons done and disruption in the learn to swim type thing.
00:29:27.680 --> 00:29:46.480
But then we could sit here and talk about if there's a poop incident and are it I mean, are they having that many that it's a problem that they have to like just say no to ages children one to four, or are they treating everything the wrong way and like closing the pool for the 12.75 hours?
00:29:47.039 --> 00:29:54.559
Well, I mean, that's that's the whole thing, and and you know, as a CPO instructor, I'm sure you probably go along the same route.
00:29:54.720 --> 00:29:58.880
If somebody is my age, your age has diarrhea, they're sick.
00:29:59.039 --> 00:30:00.000
It's as simple as that.
00:30:00.160 --> 00:30:02.079
I mean, there's no other reason for it.
00:30:02.400 --> 00:30:05.759
Babies traditionally do not have solid food.
00:30:05.839 --> 00:30:06.880
I mean, it's as simple as that.
00:30:06.960 --> 00:30:11.200
So just because they have diarrhea doesn't necessarily mean that they're sick.
00:30:11.359 --> 00:30:29.200
Now it doesn't mean that everybody wants to swim around it and stuff like that, but I mean I feel that a young child who is not ill should be treated more like a solid school incident than a diarrheal incident, just for the fact that we know that you know, chances are they don't have MRSA.
00:30:29.440 --> 00:30:34.480
Chances are they don't have one of these uh you know really bad diseases that we're trying to contain.
00:30:34.799 --> 00:30:40.160
Whereas, you know, teenagers and up, like 10 years old and up sort of thing, yeah.
00:30:40.240 --> 00:30:43.839
I mean, if they've got diarrhea, there's something that's just not right with their system.
00:30:44.640 --> 00:30:46.240
Oh, we bring up MRSA.
00:30:46.720 --> 00:31:01.680
I remember when we had an it that you know that's gonna be surfaces, and oh, I remember this one outbreak we had, and it we figured out it was the sharing of towels between the teenage kids at a summer.
00:31:03.279 --> 00:31:07.680
It was interesting that we were able to figure that out and backtrack it.
00:31:08.160 --> 00:31:11.519
Um so let's jump to our next topic.
00:31:11.599 --> 00:31:15.519
You know, I'm a pinball machine, so that's for me.
00:31:16.640 --> 00:31:24.640
Uh we're gonna talk about lightning safety because it is a summer and we got a lot of storms rolling through in different places.
00:31:24.880 --> 00:31:34.640
So I mean, what do you think policy should be when it comes to you know, we're outdoor workers and lightning is a safety hazard.
00:31:34.720 --> 00:31:38.480
And I've seen this brought up on social media a lot of times.
00:31:38.559 --> 00:31:39.839
Like, what is your policy?
00:31:40.000 --> 00:31:41.119
What do you do?
00:31:42.960 --> 00:31:46.640
Well, okay, so you guys know that I'm real sweet, right?
00:31:46.720 --> 00:31:49.039
So I'm made of sugar, I stay out of the rain.
00:31:49.200 --> 00:31:50.960
When it's raining, I just don't work in it.
00:31:51.039 --> 00:31:52.400
It's it's that simple.
00:31:52.640 --> 00:31:59.119
Uh now, way back a million years ago when I was lifeguarding, um, I was a lifeguard in an outdoor pool.
00:31:59.200 --> 00:32:03.920
So as soon as there was lightning, we had to evacuate the pool and send everybody home.
00:32:04.079 --> 00:32:10.000
And we weren't allowed to open the swimming pool back up until it had been at least a half an hour since the last thunder.
00:32:10.160 --> 00:32:12.960
And as you know, thunder travels for miles and miles.
00:32:13.279 --> 00:32:17.039
So at that point, we can declare a safe area.
00:32:17.279 --> 00:32:21.119
But up until then, no, it was complete like there was no interpretation.
00:32:21.279 --> 00:32:24.240
Close the pool down, get everybody out, bye bye, go home.
00:32:24.400 --> 00:32:29.680
And uh when the pools open back up again, you know, everything was being safe.
00:32:30.240 --> 00:32:39.440
Yeah, and down here, I I think Florida is known out of all 50 states as the lightning capital of the country or world or something.
00:32:39.519 --> 00:32:48.880
We get a lot of lightning, and so and we're servicing pools year-round down here, so and I'm sure Texas and other places as well.
00:32:49.119 --> 00:32:54.079
And so you deal with lightning quite a bit here almost on a daily basis.
00:32:54.640 --> 00:32:59.759
So don't risk yourself getting hit, it's not worth it.
00:33:00.720 --> 00:33:05.680
You if you can't go into a building or anything like that, the best place is go to your vehicle.
00:33:06.400 --> 00:33:13.519
Go to your vehicle, and there's a 30-30 rule that is taught in a lot of safety classes.
00:33:13.680 --> 00:33:20.319
The 30-30 rule, I can send it to you if you're interested, you contact me and I can send that to you.
00:33:20.880 --> 00:33:24.640
And it's counted out, and then it's safe to go back out.
00:33:25.200 --> 00:33:25.759
All right.
00:33:26.400 --> 00:33:29.759
I I remember I was working doing septic.
00:33:30.799 --> 00:33:55.039
I was doing a soil evaluation with a six-foot auger digging a six-foot hole in somebody's yard, trying to play the game that a lot of you guys try to play as well, holding a metal pole, and don't those fiber poles conductivity primate has it right on their website that they're not gonna guarantee that it's still conductive even though it's carbon fiber, okay?
00:33:55.279 --> 00:34:01.920
There's they know they make them, they know, and so it doesn't matter if it's not the old metal ones anymore.
00:34:02.000 --> 00:34:03.359
You're sitting there holding it.
00:34:03.599 --> 00:34:05.920
It's like, hit me, right?
00:34:06.079 --> 00:34:13.039
It's like, and then being being by the equipment with all the metal and everything else there, and electricity and everything.
00:34:13.119 --> 00:34:14.639
That's unsafe.
00:34:14.960 --> 00:34:16.559
Yeah, it's an unsafe place.
00:34:16.719 --> 00:34:19.280
It's again, hit me, hit me, hit me.
00:34:19.519 --> 00:34:20.559
Please, please, please.
00:34:20.639 --> 00:34:23.679
We care about you guys, the pool service pros out there.
00:34:23.840 --> 00:34:24.480
It matters.
00:34:24.639 --> 00:34:30.880
The safety that we're gonna talk about on this live podcast sometimes like this is very important.
00:34:31.039 --> 00:34:34.159
We care about all of you listening or not listening right now.
00:34:34.320 --> 00:34:42.400
We hope you become a listener, but we care about all of you in the industry across all countries, even Canada and everybody else.
00:34:42.639 --> 00:34:47.280
And make sure that you're it sounds easy and simple, but you know what?
00:34:47.360 --> 00:35:00.320
You need to sit down and have a staff meeting if you do have a staff of technicians and go over lightning safety because OSHA can come out if your employee gets hit and killed by lightning.
00:35:00.480 --> 00:35:14.079
It is a reportable death, and one single reportable death to OSHA in the United States, they will come out and do a full inspection of all your chemical safety, things you might be lacking, and everything else.
00:35:14.320 --> 00:35:19.679
They're not just gonna look at what caused the death of that one employee, they're gonna just check out everything while they're there.
00:35:19.760 --> 00:35:22.559
They figure if this happened, what else is going on?
00:35:22.639 --> 00:35:24.960
And they're gonna start getting in.
00:35:25.119 --> 00:35:27.199
So let's talk safety more.
00:35:27.360 --> 00:35:32.239
I know people are like, oh, come on, duh, lightning's outside, I shouldn't be out there.
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:34.960
But there are people that push it, okay?
00:35:35.119 --> 00:35:36.639
Let's not push it.
00:35:36.880 --> 00:35:42.079
Um a lot of times these storms blow through and then it's safe to go back out, you know.
00:35:42.320 --> 00:35:54.159
Work on other things like communication with your customers, especially with your public pools, because I mean that always caused a lot of violations, people not knowing what was going on at the public pool.
00:35:54.480 --> 00:36:01.039
Well, isn't that a rule in Florida that Florida, because it's a peninsula, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it'll change?
00:36:01.360 --> 00:36:04.480
It yeah, we're it it can change pretty quickly here.
00:36:04.559 --> 00:36:12.639
I'll look outside and like the wind picked up and all of a sudden and it's like raining out, and I'm like, wasn't the sun just out?
00:36:12.880 --> 00:36:14.320
It it's strange here.
00:36:15.039 --> 00:36:18.400
Um I I'm not looking forward to the season coming up.
00:36:18.480 --> 00:36:19.360
We're in it now.
00:36:19.519 --> 00:36:23.599
As soon as August, I start getting a little anxious.
00:36:23.760 --> 00:36:29.679
I have that anxiety a little bit, but not nearly as much as people that live outside the Florida.
00:36:29.840 --> 00:36:33.119
Like tropical storms, they don't get me uh excited.
00:36:33.280 --> 00:36:36.559
Okay, it's gonna be those hurricanes.
00:36:36.880 --> 00:36:42.639
I went through the 2004 two of them that hit the Linux coast here and lost a house.
00:36:42.960 --> 00:36:44.559
Right, ceilings fell in.
00:36:44.639 --> 00:36:46.239
So I I'm getting a little anxious.
00:36:46.320 --> 00:36:48.480
I'm anxious till about mid-October.
00:36:48.639 --> 00:36:52.239
Then I'm like, Well, nicely, we don't get too much severe weather.
00:36:52.400 --> 00:36:57.920
Uh, we've been getting a lot of tornadoes recently for some reason or another, but uh, you know, come and go.
00:36:58.159 --> 00:37:00.639
Um, but I am looking forward to the end of the season.
00:37:00.719 --> 00:37:02.400
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
00:37:02.480 --> 00:37:05.840
Uh starting to get all psyched up and motivated and stuff.
00:37:05.920 --> 00:37:08.559
And I had to open a swimming pool yesterday.
00:37:08.880 --> 00:37:13.119
Oh, yeah, oh my gosh.
00:37:13.280 --> 00:37:20.400
So I'm familiar with the pool because I opened the pool two years ago, and it had like prehistoric stuff like swimming in it.
00:37:20.559 --> 00:37:26.480
They were like this long, and they look like those bugs off of Star Trek with the spiny legs and stuff like that.
00:37:26.639 --> 00:37:29.760
And it's like the faster I can get out of here, the better.
00:37:30.079 --> 00:37:35.599
So I roll into this guy's laneway and driveway, laneway, it's the same thing, guys.
00:37:35.679 --> 00:37:36.239
So relax.
00:37:36.639 --> 00:37:44.559
I roll down the window, Canadian, and Buddy is standing there, and I said, I'm told I'm here to open your pool.
00:37:44.639 --> 00:37:50.800
And he says, Yeah, he says, We didn't open it last year either, and the water's a little black.
00:37:51.119 --> 00:37:52.559
It's like, buddy, no shit.
00:37:52.639 --> 00:37:53.760
It's August.
00:37:54.960 --> 00:37:56.000
Bad language.
00:37:56.239 --> 00:37:57.599
Bad language.
00:38:00.159 --> 00:38:06.320
So he's gonna he's gonna spend three weeks getting the water clear so that it's nice and clean when somebody closes the pool for him.
00:38:07.679 --> 00:38:09.360
It's like, come on.
00:38:09.599 --> 00:38:13.199
He's gonna open it and then close it in like two days.
00:38:13.519 --> 00:38:16.480
Yeah, because we start closing pools at the beginning of September.
00:38:16.719 --> 00:38:18.800
Yeah, it's like when the kids go back to school.
00:38:19.599 --> 00:38:21.119
We're in August dude already.
00:38:21.199 --> 00:38:22.239
It's Canada.
00:38:22.559 --> 00:38:24.320
Yeah, and the water was black.
00:38:24.559 --> 00:38:27.119
I have to tease Rob here because he's from Canada.
00:38:27.280 --> 00:38:28.320
This one I always do.
00:38:28.559 --> 00:38:36.159
Notice when we I mentioned restroom or bathroom earlier, and then he called it the what do you call it, Rob?
00:38:36.239 --> 00:38:36.559
Go.
00:38:36.800 --> 00:38:37.599
Washroom?
00:38:37.840 --> 00:38:38.880
The washroom.
00:38:38.960 --> 00:38:42.559
So I wanted to make sure everybody knew what the washroom is.
00:38:43.599 --> 00:38:46.400
It's also in in the UK, it's called a water closet.
00:38:46.800 --> 00:38:47.840
So chill out.
00:38:48.079 --> 00:38:53.039
Well, a lot of our health agencies call them health clo or water closets in the health code.
00:38:53.440 --> 00:38:54.000
All right.
00:38:54.400 --> 00:39:03.119
This last one I thought was interesting again, saw in service industry news, but I also saw it posted somewhere else before this as well.
00:39:03.360 --> 00:39:05.360
And this is Florida only.
00:39:06.079 --> 00:39:10.559
Florida expands their sexual offender law.
00:39:10.800 --> 00:39:22.239
So registered sex offenders against minors cannot live now within a thousand feet of public pools and slash pads.
00:39:23.360 --> 00:39:29.599
And if you knew Florida and how they defined a public pool, that you'd look at and go, wow.
00:39:30.480 --> 00:39:36.960
Because an apartment complex pool is a public pool, so is that like they can't live there now?
00:39:37.440 --> 00:39:43.920
An HOA is regulated as a public pool, so they can't live in a gated HOA community homeowner association.
00:39:44.239 --> 00:39:51.840
A condo owner association, a COA is also a public pool with their pool there, so they can't live where can they live now?
00:39:51.920 --> 00:39:54.880
Because they can't be by schools and daycare.
00:39:55.280 --> 00:39:58.000
It's like I j I I know they're bad people.
00:39:58.079 --> 00:40:01.039
I'm just saying, wow, that's interesting.
00:40:01.199 --> 00:40:09.199
It's like it's really gonna limit where are they are they really trying to put them on an island off the coast of Florida or something?
00:40:09.760 --> 00:40:10.800
Uh you know what?
00:40:10.960 --> 00:40:14.880
I've yeah, I I am I saying it's a good thing.
00:40:15.119 --> 00:40:18.079
I mean, protecting the kids absolutely is a good thing.
00:40:18.400 --> 00:40:25.519
But it's also been my experience that government just kind of jams in a law without actually looking at it and says we'll fix it later.
00:40:25.679 --> 00:40:36.159
And this might be one of those things where they put this law in, and if the person's living there and stays off the radar, nobody's gonna say anything, right?
00:40:36.559 --> 00:40:44.719
But the second somebody says something, it's gonna turn into, well, you should have known better and enjoy your three hots in the cot.
00:40:44.800 --> 00:40:45.840
You know what I mean?
00:40:46.159 --> 00:40:47.599
I just thought it was interesting.
00:40:47.920 --> 00:40:52.320
Wanted my Florida listeners to be aware that might be going on.
00:40:52.480 --> 00:41:05.519
If you see somebody getting arrested while you're servicing that public pool, you know, it's probably it could be their assets offender and they're not supposed to be within a thousand feet of that pool that you're cleaning that's a public pool.
00:41:05.599 --> 00:41:07.760
And a lot of people think it's everything though.
00:41:08.159 --> 00:41:13.119
A thousand feet from a public pool, five hundred feet from a schoolyard.
00:41:13.280 --> 00:41:21.039
Uh, you know, by the time we put all the restrictions and regulations in place, we might as well build some kind of a resort out in the middle of Death Valley.
00:41:21.440 --> 00:41:27.920
Because that's the only place where you're not going to be able to bounce off of one of these boundaries.
00:41:29.119 --> 00:41:29.679
All right.
00:41:29.840 --> 00:41:32.159
I have my last thing I want to bring up.
00:41:32.239 --> 00:41:45.199
We'll talk about uh next time around, we'll talk about test kit interferences because a lot of listeners might not be aware of you know your manual test kit and the four big interferences that happen.
00:41:45.360 --> 00:41:46.880
We'll talk about that next time.
00:41:47.039 --> 00:41:49.519
I want to talk about alkalinity, total alkalinity.
00:41:49.599 --> 00:41:51.760
Why is total alkalinity so important?
00:41:53.280 --> 00:41:54.800
Oh, yeah, I'm sorry, are you asking me?
00:41:55.039 --> 00:41:58.880
Yeah, I'm throwing it out to you so they don't have to hear me talk, they've already heard me talk enough.
00:41:59.119 --> 00:42:00.639
I'm gonna let you talk more.
00:42:01.360 --> 00:42:01.760
Oh, okay.
00:42:01.840 --> 00:42:06.079
Well, I mean we use we use alkalinity in our pool of water as a buffer for pH.
00:42:06.320 --> 00:42:08.239
It helps keep it from dropping down.
00:42:08.400 --> 00:42:11.440
Uh, it also sets the ceiling for your pH.
00:42:11.519 --> 00:42:16.239
So the higher your alkalinity, the higher your pH is going to climb in the pool of water.
00:42:16.719 --> 00:42:23.119
Um what else?
00:42:23.440 --> 00:42:25.119
Alkalinity is so important.
00:42:25.280 --> 00:42:26.639
That's why I was bringing it up.
00:42:26.800 --> 00:42:49.280
Just wanted to bring it up at the tail end here because a lot of people they say they'll have like a test kit that they got, and it tests it's like the mini kit from Taylor, and it's the one that the health agencies use because a lot of times all they test for is free chlorine and pH and cyanuric acid, maybe, and that's it.
00:42:49.840 --> 00:42:53.840
And so that's all they're testing, and so they don't have the full big test kit.
00:42:54.159 --> 00:43:08.239
And the importance of total alkalinity, guys, you gotta test for it every week at your residential, know where it's at, because it is the number one factor that you gotta look at for water balance.
00:43:08.480 --> 00:43:16.400
Chapter sits, if you take a CPO class or any pool operator course, water balance, water balance, water balance, right?
00:43:16.639 --> 00:43:22.079
Well, I mean, even the most basic test strips, test for sanitizer, pH, and alkalinity.
00:43:22.320 --> 00:43:23.840
The most basic strips.
00:43:24.000 --> 00:43:30.400
So if they're telling you right there that those are the three most important things to check, you should always be checking them.
00:43:30.639 --> 00:43:31.280
Yep.
00:43:31.519 --> 00:43:32.159
Yep.
00:43:32.639 --> 00:43:35.199
So been wonderful on here.
00:43:35.360 --> 00:43:47.840
Uh I just want to get some shout-outs to who is on the been on the live Instagram because it's kind of exciting to hear at least your your name, your handle, I'll call it.
00:43:48.000 --> 00:43:49.199
I call it a handle.
00:43:49.360 --> 00:43:54.800
My my brother's always been on uh C V radio and he calls it his handle.
00:43:55.119 --> 00:43:57.679
Stage name, whatever we want to call it.
00:43:58.400 --> 00:43:59.840
Any questions from Abdul this week?
00:44:00.559 --> 00:44:03.760
Um, I don't see anything from him, no.
00:44:04.320 --> 00:44:04.639
Okay.
00:44:04.960 --> 00:44:10.800
Um, let's see, we got Toasty73 that was on Instagram live.
00:44:11.280 --> 00:44:20.000
Uh KellMCD88, Yagari, XLNT pool, so that's awesome.
00:44:20.159 --> 00:44:22.320
Signature pooled spa, awesome.
00:44:22.800 --> 00:44:23.760
Nice to have you on.
00:44:24.000 --> 00:44:31.199
Murphy G5150, uh, Desert Promotions, not sure what you do, but that's cool.
00:44:31.360 --> 00:44:33.920
Thank you for listening into the podcast.
00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:39.440
And uh Albert Alberto Lugo176.
00:44:40.559 --> 00:44:46.159
So thank you so much for joining on the live Instagram.
00:44:46.639 --> 00:44:47.840
And joining me.
00:44:49.119 --> 00:44:50.719
Yes, both of us.
00:44:50.960 --> 00:44:55.360
Uh Rob, my co-anchor, and and myself, Lauren Groom.
00:44:55.440 --> 00:44:59.119
I gotta do a few more uh fun sounds here.
00:44:59.199 --> 00:45:00.480
Let's see what can I do.
00:45:00.719 --> 00:45:04.400
Oh, I should have done this one with the lightning safety thing.
00:45:09.039 --> 00:45:11.119
I'm not hearing anything at this end.
00:45:11.360 --> 00:45:13.840
Oh, it's not even playing on that side?
00:45:14.000 --> 00:45:14.480
I'm hoping.
00:45:14.960 --> 00:45:15.519
Not on my side.
00:45:16.639 --> 00:45:20.639
It lightning safety it was a it was thunder and lightning sound.
00:45:21.039 --> 00:45:21.760
Alright.
00:45:22.079 --> 00:45:26.400
So let I I think that's a wrap for us this week.
00:45:26.559 --> 00:45:28.880
We'll see everybody in two weeks.
00:45:29.119 --> 00:45:32.960
The next live uh let's talk about pools podcasts.
00:45:33.119 --> 00:45:35.360
Uh we'll be while you're looking that up.
00:45:35.440 --> 00:45:38.960
If anybody out there knows anything about PowerPoint, please hit me up.
00:45:39.119 --> 00:45:42.559
Uh it's been making me absolutely insane for the last week.
00:45:42.719 --> 00:45:48.800
All of a sudden, PowerPoint says there's no app uh available to read these PowerPoint files.
00:45:48.960 --> 00:45:52.000
It's like I haven't been able to figure it out.
00:45:52.320 --> 00:45:53.280
Oh no.
00:45:54.320 --> 00:45:57.519
Well, the next live, let's talk about pools podcast.
00:45:57.679 --> 00:46:01.039
We will see you guys live on You didn't give the date.
00:46:01.920 --> 00:46:05.039
Tuesday, August 18th.
00:46:05.199 --> 00:46:07.840
Two weeks from the 10 a.m.
00:46:08.079 --> 00:46:08.639
Eastern Time.
00:46:08.880 --> 00:46:10.639
Looking forward to seeing everybody on there.
00:46:10.719 --> 00:46:26.079
And as as always, this podcast episode will be posted as a recorded version within a week onto the uh Space Cool School website uh where my podcast kind of lies.
00:46:26.239 --> 00:46:28.480
But you can listen to it on all the directories as well.
00:46:28.559 --> 00:46:32.000
So go to your Apple Podcasts, Spotify, any of the directories.
00:46:32.079 --> 00:46:33.119
You'll find us on there.
00:46:33.280 --> 00:46:36.000
You'll get to hear me and Rob banter there as well.
00:46:36.159 --> 00:46:40.800
So this episode will be recorded there and up on my website under resources.
00:46:40.960 --> 00:46:43.679
Go to cpocertified.com.
00:46:43.840 --> 00:46:48.559
And as always, thank you for listening to the never know.
00:46:49.199 --> 00:46:51.760
Maybe by next time I'll have my super sexy shirt.
00:46:52.000 --> 00:46:56.159
Apparently, they're just uh sewing reams of uh fabric together to make it.
00:46:56.320 --> 00:46:58.960
So maybe I'll have my uh fancy dancey shirt next year.
00:47:01.280 --> 00:47:10.880
But the collared shirt version, he wants to look all professional and everything, and it's gonna be tight fitting so we can see Robert.
00:47:11.119 --> 00:47:12.159
I don't want a tight fitting.
00:47:14.000 --> 00:47:15.920
I make them tight fitting on my own.
00:47:16.079 --> 00:47:16.800
Thanks.
00:47:17.119 --> 00:47:26.079
All right, thank you for listening, everybody, to the live Let's Talk About Pools podcast uh with me and Rob Stewart, my co-anchor, and we'll see you in two weeks.
00:47:26.159 --> 00:47:28.079
And we hope you enjoyed the new intro.
00:47:28.159 --> 00:47:29.599
Um, very happy about that.
00:47:29.679 --> 00:47:31.280
And no, that's not my voice.
00:47:31.440 --> 00:47:36.719
That is a very nice lady who has a much nicer voice than mine.
00:47:37.440 --> 00:47:41.280
All right, see you next time, everybody, and see you next time too, Rob.
00:47:41.760 --> 00:47:42.480
Yeah, thanks.
00:47:42.559 --> 00:47:44.000
Stay safe, guys.
00:47:48.000 --> 00:47:51.840

Check them out at PoolBrain.com.
00:00:18.879 --> 00:00:20.800
Now let's jump right in.
00:00:25.039 --> 00:00:30.160
Hey, welcome to Let's Talk About Pools Live Podcast, August 4th already.
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:32.799
God, the the summer just blew by, Rob.
00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:34.640
It it did.
00:00:34.719 --> 00:00:41.920
It started off really super slow and then all of a sudden it just like a roller coaster just hit that steep slope and away we went.
00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:44.079
I know.
00:00:44.479 --> 00:00:46.560
It's amazing how fast it goes.
00:00:46.880 --> 00:00:53.359
So, first thing I want to do is uh as you saw, we have a great sponsor for our podcast.
00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:55.679
So I want to acknowledge Pool Brain.
00:00:55.759 --> 00:00:58.399
Thank you for being an awesome podcast sponsor.
00:00:58.479 --> 00:01:05.920
So let's listen in to what they have to offer for our Pool Service Pros, and then we'll jump right into this uh live podcast episode.
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:15.040
Well, why don't you just do Fulbright because we can do it all?
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:16.640
Absolutely love Fulbright.
00:01:16.719 --> 00:01:18.560
There's not a better app on the market.
00:01:18.799 --> 00:01:22.000
We've tested a ton of different ones and windows on Fulbright for weeks.
00:02:08.080 --> 00:02:08.639
It's a stuff.
00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:15.599
So, like I promised on the last episode, I would I went and I checked out Full Brain to see how it would apply to like my business kind of thing.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:18.400
And it just offers so much.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:28.639
I mean, uh I can see, you know, like if you had like 10 crews out there, stuff like that, everything under one umbrella, it totally, totally makes sense.
00:02:28.879 --> 00:02:36.000
It's way too much for the scope of my company, unfortunately, because I would have loved to give it a kick, but it's just way too much for my company.
00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:38.800
But you know, bigger companies, absolutely for sure.
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:42.800
I could see this uh just going through all the benefits and stuff.
00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:47.759
Yeah, yeah, it it they're really in tune with really big companies.
00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:53.199
They have some that have like, God, I forget the number of pool techs they have, it's amazing.
00:02:53.439 --> 00:03:05.439
And the integrations, I I just met with Ket uh Kevin with uh Pool Brain and it the new integration with Penthair, that that was really game-changing there.
00:03:05.599 --> 00:03:07.840
Um yeah, I saw something about that.
00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:13.039
Yeah, check them out and see what they have to offer and see if they're a great fit for you guys.
00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:14.319
So let's jump right in.
00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:18.240
I want to uh, you know, Rob is my awesome co-anchor.
00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:27.199
He comes here every two weeks with me and banters with me back and forth, and I want to say thank you for joining with me on the uh live podcast, Rob.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:29.120
Oh well, thanks for inviting me back.
00:03:29.199 --> 00:03:31.759
I you know, I love being here, I love chatting with you.
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:38.960
So, you know, plus it's a nice uh it's a nice little break uh from actually having to work for a change.
00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:44.639
So and and pretty soon I'm getting him a shirt, guys.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:47.680
So he's gonna have the same shirt as me so we can match.
00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:50.879
He's gonna have a nice collared shirt that he wanted.
00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:52.639
So that's on order.
00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:53.919
That's coming soon for you.
00:03:54.080 --> 00:03:57.280
And pretty soon pretty soon on the website.
00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:00.240
Any listeners are really excited about the podcast.
00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:03.759
Uh, I'll be linking up uh a little page.
00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:12.319
There'll be like you can go straight to Rev-Up Apparel and you can buy any shirts that you like with the podcast, and that's what you're into.
00:04:13.919 --> 00:04:20.959
So we are live on uh Instagram as well, and we have a couple people on there that have joined us.
00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:26.959
Aqua John's, hello, want to say hi to you, and Jocelyn's has joined as well.
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:28.319
So stay on, listen.
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:30.560
We're we have a lot to talk about today.
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:34.000
Um, first thing, what do we want to bring up, Rob?
00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:35.600
What were we gonna talk about first?
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:36.720
That ends tomorrow.
00:04:36.959 --> 00:04:42.720
That explosive lettuce diarrhea stuff that everybody's all uh that's not ending tomorrow.
00:04:43.759 --> 00:04:52.879
Oh, that oh yeah, no, no, I I it'd be nice if it would end tomorrow, but no, we're talking uh you're talking about uh the Pool Nation award nominations.
00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:54.319
Yes, that ends tomorrow.
00:04:55.360 --> 00:04:58.480
Yes, that our friends at Pool Nation.
00:04:58.720 --> 00:05:04.240
Hi Edgar, hi John Flawless, and Zach and everybody out there.
00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:06.879
Uh they had an awesome live podcast this week.
00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:18.319
I listened to, I think it was Joey Garcia uh or Joe Garcia with Lion Financial is an awesome podcast, but looking forward to seeing who gets nominated.
00:05:18.480 --> 00:05:22.000
Uh so get out there because it ends tomorrow, as Rob said.
00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:22.879
Nominate.
00:05:22.959 --> 00:05:24.480
There's so many categories.
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:34.160
And then uh we'll find out who's nominated on the evening of August nineteenth when they announce it live on uh social media.
00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:37.759
So listen in to see if you made the list, if you made the cut there.
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:42.639
Um I'll be there listening and just sitting in the audience.
00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:46.639
So I'll be there live, but you won't see me on camera, I don't think.
00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:52.800
But I'm gonna be out there waiting in anticipation to see who gets nominated.
00:05:53.279 --> 00:05:54.399
So they'll find you.
00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:56.560
They'll find you in the audience, don't worry.
00:05:56.879 --> 00:06:00.720
There's some awesome pool pros, awesome pool products out there.
00:06:00.879 --> 00:06:12.240
Uh I even want to I'm gonna have Aquastar on soon on the regular episodes of the podcast, and uh have Todd Pieri and all them on.
00:06:12.319 --> 00:06:22.639
They're awesome over there, and they're an educational sponsor uh for Space Coast Pool School, so wanna reach out to them because they're a diamond partner and say thank you.
00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:28.639
Supporting education in the industry is very, very important.
00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:29.680
Right, Rob?
00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:31.600
Absolutely.
00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:33.759
So we we did that.
00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:42.160
Uh the other oh, I mean, this is just a month of pool nation stuff, so might as well mention uh the women's summits coming up, the pool nation woman summit.
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:43.519
I'm all hyped up for it.
00:06:43.600 --> 00:06:49.600
I'm sure if you're all on social media, Yuri saw my beautiful hair that I got done yesterday.
00:06:49.680 --> 00:06:51.680
It's still nice and straight, too.
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:56.399
So I went ahead and got a flat iron so I can keep it looking nice and straight.
00:06:56.480 --> 00:06:57.839
I really like this look.
00:06:57.920 --> 00:06:59.759
So I got mine done as well.
00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:03.839
Uh for all of you who didn't notice that I it looks so great, Rob.
00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:05.279
It looks beautiful.
00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:06.319
Let's see, let's see how much.
00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:09.839
Well, I haven't I get a free bowl of soup when I get my hair cut like this.
00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:16.319
Rob's hair, guys.
00:07:16.639 --> 00:07:18.079
Rob's hair.
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:20.079
Yeah.
00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:21.600
Great, great haircut.
00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:23.439
You beat me you beat me right there.
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:26.480
But I I got I'm getting ready for the woman's summit.
00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:29.360
Have to look nice and kind of pretty.
00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:34.160
The one I really go out for is the uh when I go to the Pool Nation Awards.
00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:35.439
That's like red carpet.
00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:37.360
I get super excited about that.
00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:41.600
I usually uh divulge the color I'm wearing by how, Rob.
00:07:41.839 --> 00:07:42.879
Do you remember?
00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:46.079
Uh I think you sent me a string of pictures.
00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:48.079
Uh I sent you pictures.
00:07:48.160 --> 00:07:48.800
You're special.
00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:50.319
You get to see what I'm wearing.
00:07:50.480 --> 00:07:54.639
But the rest of everybody else doesn't know yet, so don't divulge the color yet.
00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:56.480
I won't say anything.
00:07:56.879 --> 00:08:04.399
A week or two before the Pull Nation Awards, which will be in November this year, I will get my nails done about a week before.
00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:12.240
And I will just take a picture of my fingernails, and that will tell you the color that I am wearing to the Pull Nation Awards.
00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:15.279
Oh, jeez, you sound like a 16-year-old girl.
00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:19.759
Try and piece together the clues so that you can figure out what I'm up to.
00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:40.879
Alright, so let's get into we've got all our stuff in the beginning there, and now I want to really get into our serious topics that we want to talk about, and and one that's kind of you know made the news a lot, just saw it on the news this morning.
00:08:41.120 --> 00:08:44.799
I always watch the news from the previous night stream the next day.
00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:46.559
I know, isn't that wonderful?
00:08:46.799 --> 00:08:56.080
And so the statistics I just got recently, and this is a cyclosphora, the explosive diarrhea we're talking about that people have had.
00:08:56.320 --> 00:09:06.320
The statistics as of the news reporting from last night is that they there's more than 18,000 reported cases.
00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:12.000
So these are people who tested positive who went to a lab and tested.
00:09:12.480 --> 00:09:15.200
There are lots of cases we don't know about.
00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:16.960
That's true, public health, okay.
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:21.120
18,000 cases across 45 states in the United States.
00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:46.159
00:09:46.320 --> 00:09:56.960
So it wasn't like it was a young person with no, you know, back history of anything going on or anything like that, but this it's still not good, right?
00:09:57.840 --> 00:10:02.720
Well, when people start dying, no, it's absolutely not, you know, and they have to take that real serious.
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:12.399
And I I'm gonna mention my spouse here, my husband, Ben, who turns 50 Friday, guys, coming an old man.
00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:17.600
Uh he asked this because we know you're from Canada, Rob.
00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:21.919
So we know the stabs, and we've heard about it here in the United States, Europe, and Canada.
00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:27.840
Are you guys seeing the Cyclospore up there the same way we are down here in the States?
00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:34.399
Uh, to be quite honest with you, Lauren, I have not watched the news in about 30 years.
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:41.360
So uh, you know, it's hard enough going through a day, uh, the days as it is.
00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:44.159
Uh so no, I don't I don't follow any of that kind of stuff.
00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:47.200
What I see, I see on social media, which is what everybody sees.
00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:52.159
Um, so unfortunately, I can't that's an awesome question.
00:10:52.320 --> 00:11:01.759
I would I would imagine, I would imagine, okay, so I had seen an article where they had tied it back to lettuce from a certain producer that goes to a certain franchise.
00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:09.279
We have that franchise in Canada, so it's completely understandable that you know our stuff would be affected as well.
00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:19.120
Now, in in the city where I live, Ottawa, um, because of the way they do their splash pads, it's not going to spread through that.
00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:23.279
So it's going to have to spread through other means, all right, such as public pools.
00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:34.159
Well, a lot of splash pads, as you know, you have to have uh circulation, filtration, sanitation, the whole thing, and they use that same water that's recirculated.
00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:43.840
In Ottawa, they don't use recirculated water, they take it right out of the drinking system, it hits the ground, and then it goes right back out to the plant for uh treatment again.
00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:50.080
So there's no filtration, there's no uh circulation, there's no none of that stuff on our splash pads.
00:11:50.399 --> 00:12:03.679
Well, and and I'm gonna say that I think more in the states, especially the Sunbelt states that have splash pads, they're gonna have recirculated water, which is why it's more of a topic to talk about because ours operate year-round.
00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:08.320
And so losing the water, you're paying for water, and then you're paying for the wastewater.
00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:16.000
It's recirculating it makes more sense, but that's where you have the higher risk of illness if you don't have the circulation infiltration.
00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:30.159
So, yes, experts are talking about it, it's very resistant to chlorine, uh, or bleach as we want to call it, which makes it more difficult to eliminate from a swimming pool or splash pad.
00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:36.799
And we know, I mean, when I worked for the health agency, there was a name we had for splash pads.
00:12:36.879 --> 00:12:38.080
We call them baby today.
00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:47.600
Little kids just put their little beehinds over the spray feature and it goes right up their their swim diaper and then they like to drink the water.
00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:54.080
So splash pads are such hotbeds for uh outbreaks a lot of times, especially crypto and stuff like that.
00:12:54.159 --> 00:13:01.120
I've seen Salmonella um is because of the habits of the majority of the population that uses it.
00:13:01.360 --> 00:13:15.360
Their habits of putting their butts over, they're not usually fully potty trained, they so they got a load in their, you know, and they may have diarrhea and they don't know how to tell their parents they have diarrhea and they drink the water that's being recirculated.
00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:29.120
So, you know, between the feces and everything else and the young children, and it's hard to kill with chlorine, it that's the big deal why kind of people were trying to talk about it when it came to our industry.
00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:32.799
But I'm gonna say that it's not as likely.
00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:42.720
There's not a lot of uh outbreaks and studies, especially in the States, with cyclosphora within pools and and splash pads and stuff like that.
00:13:42.879 --> 00:13:47.759
It's really a ready-to-eat food item type thing, so that's relieving.
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:49.759
Which makes sense with the lettuce.
00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.200
It is known as the, you know, commonly spread through lettuce, and it's you know how it's spread?
00:13:56.000 --> 00:14:03.840
It's spread from people's w waste that's it it gets spread over at the farm usually and it contaminates it.
00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:26.000
And the big way to prevent getting it wash your produce before you cut it or do anything, even if it's pre-washed salad in a bag pre-packaged, they say wash it still, because it's not guaranteed that cutting process somewhere along the line, it can get contaminated, and washing it will reduce the effective dose.
00:14:26.320 --> 00:14:30.559
All I know is chocolate is safer to eat than lettuce right now, so I'm all in.
00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:37.440
Yeah, if you really want to lose weight, maybe get some cyclospora, but I don't do not do that.
00:14:37.679 --> 00:14:39.600
That is not a good way to do it.
00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:42.639
It's uh it you're peeing from your butt, guys.
00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:47.120
It is treatable with antibiotics, and early detection is very important.
00:14:47.440 --> 00:14:57.440
But the interesting thing that makes it hard is it can take up to two weeks sometimes to sh from when you ingest it to you show illness.
00:14:57.840 --> 00:15:13.039
And so that's a long period of time, which makes it hard to contact trace where it started, and that's why it's gotten so big out of an outbreak, is because it came from a very large farm supplier that supplies a lot of different places.
00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:19.679
And so trying to get people to remember where they ate yesterday is really hard.
00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:25.120
Ask them what they ate a week ago or two weeks ago, they're not gonna remember it.
00:15:25.200 --> 00:15:26.000
It's very hard.
00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:35.679
The longer Well, plus at this time of year it's it's hot and everybody is enjoying the water features and stuff like that, and people are all on vacation, so they're traveling all over the place.
00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:36.559
Yep.
00:15:36.799 --> 00:15:44.639
So according to Cleveland Clinic, they say the illness could be spread through contain, you know, obviously through contaminated food and water.
00:15:44.879 --> 00:15:50.480
So if it can be spread through water that is even sprayed, you know, then we ingest it.
00:15:50.559 --> 00:15:55.840
If somebody's ill, I mean, there's still a possibility that it can be spread through swimming pools, hot tubs, and lakes.
00:15:55.919 --> 00:15:57.759
Let's not take that out completely.
00:15:58.159 --> 00:16:02.080
But the risk is kind of lower compared to cryptosporidium, even.
00:16:02.639 --> 00:16:14.240
So officials say it's important that if you have diarrhea, period, doesn't even matter if you've been diagnosed, don't be in recreational waters where you're getting hardly circulated.
00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:16.960
That's how we spread illness no matter what it is.
00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:19.519
Cryptosporidium doesn't matter.
00:16:19.840 --> 00:16:25.200
So this is why a lot of health agencies will require signage, like Florida does.
00:16:25.279 --> 00:16:33.759
They added signage, do not swallow the water, it's recirculated, and it's required on splash pads, and I believe on pool signs now.
00:16:34.000 --> 00:16:39.759
Um it says uh if you're ill with diarrhea, don't go swimming, basically.
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:41.759
We they love that one on the sign.
00:16:41.840 --> 00:16:47.759
That that word diarrhea to people on on the pool rules sign on a public pool down here in Florida, they love it.
00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:51.600
Well, it's sad that it's not common sense and people have to be told.
00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:52.879
Yep.
00:16:53.200 --> 00:16:55.919
Wash your hands, wash your hands frequently.
00:16:56.080 --> 00:17:00.240
You go to the bathroom, wash your hands before you go back into a public facility, please.
00:17:00.480 --> 00:17:07.200
Wash it well, not this quick thing that you do with soap and or you know, really quick and you're done.
00:17:07.440 --> 00:17:18.079
Um that's I I kind of determine that when I'm at an airport and the line for the woman's room is out the hall into the hall and the men's room has no line.
00:17:18.160 --> 00:17:19.200
I'm like, why?
00:17:19.359 --> 00:17:26.720
I know one reason why, but the other reason is I think in my head, do they wash their hands?
00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:28.079
You know?
00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:33.839
Well, no, it's because if everybody had to sit, you gotta remember we have like 15-year-olds that don't take extra space.
00:17:34.799 --> 00:17:46.160
So if we had every single guy going into the men's room have to sit down to use the washroom, uh sure would raise the sanitary level of that room, but it would also slow things down.
00:17:46.400 --> 00:17:57.440
I think I worked in public health, and my nine-year-old son, I'll still catch him trying to come out of the bathroom, and he hasn't washed his hands, and I have to send him back and he gets mad at me.
00:17:57.680 --> 00:18:01.599
So I have a kid that does it, and I work in public health.
00:18:01.759 --> 00:18:13.759
I guarantee it's happening a lot at our public facilities, pools and hot tubs and splash pads where they're going to that bathroom by the facility and they're not washing their hands so they come out.
00:18:13.839 --> 00:18:15.599
They think I'm just going back in the water.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:16.240
Right?
00:18:17.680 --> 00:18:19.599
So I saw an interesting post.
00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:21.839
I like to give credit when credit is due.
00:18:21.920 --> 00:18:23.359
This is Dewey Case.
00:18:23.599 --> 00:18:36.480
He works uh in the aquatic industry for a very long time, very involved with the Association of Aquatic Professionals and the CDC model aquatic health coaches.
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:41.200
And he had made a post about cyclospora and had a lot of good information.
00:18:41.279 --> 00:18:43.680
And he he said what about pools?
00:18:43.920 --> 00:18:48.480
He said information is limited for pools and cyclosphora.
00:18:48.960 --> 00:18:54.480
Um, but he did find a couple little things, you know, that it takes a lot of chlorine to kill it.
00:18:54.880 --> 00:18:57.440
The size and then it got into the filter even.
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:04.160
So the size of Cyclospora oosis, because remember it's a parasite, so it has an oosis like crypto.
00:19:04.799 --> 00:19:08.720
It is about 7.5 to 10 microns in size.
00:19:08.880 --> 00:19:14.480
So sand filters without a coagulant will likely not capture the oosis.
00:19:15.519 --> 00:19:25.680
And he stated uh in this uh post that older and dirtier sand media will have a better success of capturing it.
00:19:26.480 --> 00:19:32.319
Cartridge filters will be more successful depending on the condition of the cartridge.
00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:41.039
And then he went on to DE and Paralyte, which will capture the oasis because they can they filter down to like four microns.
00:19:42.079 --> 00:19:44.720
So this was from uh Yeager et al.
00:19:45.119 --> 00:20:01.359
uh kind of study that he found online found that sand-based pool filters captured 82% of a proxy pathogen for cyclosphora without coagulants, additives, or secondary filtration.
00:20:01.839 --> 00:20:14.799
So kind of interesting that we're not talking about just the amount of disinfection, but also being able to filter out the oosis, which is part of the life cycle, which is why crypto is so hard to kill, too, right?
00:20:15.119 --> 00:20:28.240
Yeah, well now a lot of people are switching from uh sand filter media to glass filter media, and I've seen reports in some cases where the sand or the excuse me, the glass filter media will filter down to four microns as well.
00:20:28.480 --> 00:20:34.799
So, I mean, if you've upgraded from your regular sand to a glass media, you might have better protection than you think.
00:20:35.119 --> 00:20:39.440
Yeah, it's that micron size that it's gonna filter down to, which is awesome.
00:20:39.920 --> 00:20:53.119
Um, so of course, as we said, cyclospora takes one to two weeks to mature to its infectious stage, and it so person-to-person transmission per CDC is very unlikely.
00:20:53.359 --> 00:20:56.160
It's a fecal oral type route, okay?
00:20:56.559 --> 00:21:01.119
Can't contaminate and you know, get it into your body somehow.
00:21:01.440 --> 00:21:06.400
Uh ingest it with just a little bit of water on your lips, anything like that while you're swimming.
00:21:06.880 --> 00:21:13.839
Um he stated from multiple non-CDC commission studies, so it means not they're not commissioned by the CDC.
00:21:14.319 --> 00:21:23.119
It appears it's unlikely to be present in solid stool, but it it is a cause of diarrhea in humans, so it'd be present in the fecal matter of infected people.
00:21:23.759 --> 00:21:37.039
Um he cited a 2017 vanilla study that's again not commissioned by the CDC that found that cyclospore oosis can survive in water for up to two months, depending on temperature of the water.
00:21:37.279 --> 00:21:37.519
Yeah.
00:21:38.400 --> 00:21:40.079
Interesting information, isn't it?
00:21:40.400 --> 00:21:43.119
Uh this is all Dewey Case guys, he's an awesome guy.
00:21:43.359 --> 00:21:48.480
He has, I think the C the center the Model Aquatic Health Code has their own podcast as well.
00:21:49.039 --> 00:21:56.160
Um he's been on Rudy's podcast about uh recreational water illnesses and the Mac and stuff like that.
00:21:56.640 --> 00:21:59.599
Another study talked about the disinfection.
00:21:59.680 --> 00:22:04.480
So So he he goes, This is what I would call discouraging results.
00:22:04.960 --> 00:22:12.319
An approximate one log reduction, which is not a lot, was reached at 50 parts per million of chlorine.
00:22:13.039 --> 00:22:13.440
5.0.
00:22:14.559 --> 00:22:15.599
Yeah, 5-0.
00:22:16.799 --> 00:22:23.920
And a 200 ppm concentration of chlorine, we saw a 2.5 log reduction of cyclospora.
00:22:24.160 --> 00:22:34.720
So the parasite is unaffected by normal chlorine ppm values that we would keep in a normal public pool and by most health jurisdictions.
00:22:35.039 --> 00:22:47.440
So hyperchlorination to those levels showing any significant significant inactivation are very gonna be very challenging for our pools, the pool equipment, and for our pool operators.
00:22:48.079 --> 00:23:03.839
So, I mean, what is what does this mean as we talked about apart from and he talked about there was this one Nepalese study from Nepal, I believe, that there's no evidence linking swimming pools to the spread of cyclospora otherwise.
00:23:03.920 --> 00:23:07.440
There's this one study he found that because they're in Nepal.
00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:09.440
Right, they're in Nepal.
00:23:09.599 --> 00:23:12.000
So it's a they don't have swimming pools, do they?
00:23:12.559 --> 00:23:20.559
So, other than that, there's not been evidence really linking swimming pools to the spread of cyclospora.
00:23:20.799 --> 00:23:40.640
The research is limited though, and the explosive diarrhea found what cyclosporosporosis, which is the condition you get, the illness you get from cyclospore, is likely limiting to participating in swimming activities treated what treated and filtered, being filtered out.
00:23:40.799 --> 00:23:49.359
So we're talking remember, we brought up filters, we've brought up chlorine, we brought up it's really more a food item, ready-to-eat food item.
00:23:49.519 --> 00:23:50.559
Let's bring that up.
00:23:50.960 --> 00:24:01.519
So he he said, just keep what you're doing, no reason to get all ups, you know, oh my god, you know, we're all gonna die, kind of a level, you know, and I agree.
00:24:01.920 --> 00:24:11.519
But if you're renovating or updating equipment, give more consideration to your filtered designs so they can capture smaller than 10 microns.
00:24:11.839 --> 00:24:21.759
Give stronger consideration to installing secondary treatment systems like UV, ozone, or AOP.
00:24:22.400 --> 00:24:25.920
And I was just have I was waiting for a break in the conversation to bring that up.
00:24:26.079 --> 00:24:32.240
I wonder what you know, for example, Dave Rockwell would say, he deals with AOP on on the regular basis.
00:24:32.400 --> 00:24:38.400
I wonder how much studies are being done to see how effective AOP is as far as treating this goes.
00:24:38.720 --> 00:24:39.200
Yep.
00:24:39.440 --> 00:24:49.359
And I will be interviewing uh Tom Schaefer coming up from uh Clear Comfort, which they're a leading company as well for AOP.
00:24:49.920 --> 00:24:59.759
And they even have a really interesting study we're gonna talk about on a future episode that'll be on with him uh with Department of Energy, which is has nothing to do with this.
00:24:59.839 --> 00:25:04.480
But secondary disinfection is kind of something interesting to talk about.
00:25:04.720 --> 00:25:24.799
It would really increase uh or increase our being ready for public health in this way that we're talking about, but decrease our outbreaks because they're really good and they these type of secondary disinfection systems are really good at inactivating Cryptosporidanus as well.
00:25:25.359 --> 00:25:29.680
And so you still have your chlorine residual floating around where people are swimming.
00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:38.640
We both know secondary disinfection doesn't leave a residual, which is why it's not really you can't really test it as easily, you don't know what's there.
00:25:38.880 --> 00:25:41.119
You gotta know that there's something there.
00:25:41.279 --> 00:25:48.720
So when you have chlorine primary disinfection and some one of these secondary disinfection systems, this will really help.
00:25:49.279 --> 00:25:58.880
So, as he said, if you have or had diarrhea in the last two weeks, don't we teach that somewhere, Rob, in the last two weeks?
00:25:59.039 --> 00:26:02.000
If you've had diarrhea, what what what do you want to do?
00:26:02.160 --> 00:26:04.799
Do you want to go swimming or not go swimming?
00:26:05.119 --> 00:26:09.119
Um, I don't go swimming in public pools uh right off the hop.
00:26:09.200 --> 00:26:13.680
Uh, this is just another line on my list of reasons that Rob doesn't go into public pools.
00:26:13.839 --> 00:26:18.319
Um, but obviously, yeah, if you're if you're not feeling well, stay away from the general public.
00:26:18.480 --> 00:26:20.480
Nobody wants to put up with your stuff.
00:26:20.640 --> 00:26:26.480
Uh, you know, there's you know, uh, it's just you're putting everybody else at risk.
00:26:26.559 --> 00:26:27.359
Why do it?
00:26:27.680 --> 00:26:28.319
Yep.
00:26:28.720 --> 00:26:38.640
And when I interviewed, because I did interviewing of all these recreational water illnesses when I worked for the Florida Health Agency down here for the Florida Department of Health.
00:26:38.880 --> 00:26:42.960
And I did everything from cryptosporidium.
00:26:43.119 --> 00:26:45.519
We had two at the summer of 2007.
00:26:45.599 --> 00:26:48.160
We called it at the health department, the summer poop.
00:26:48.720 --> 00:26:55.759
We had so third like 33 confirmed cases, which normally we'd have like way less than that.
00:26:56.160 --> 00:26:59.759
Um, and it was determined started in a splash pad.
00:27:00.319 --> 00:27:06.640
So, and it was a child, and it and it spread through more children, and then it actually spread through, I believe, a child care center.
00:27:06.799 --> 00:27:11.119
So it can spread outside of the aquatic venue after.
00:27:11.200 --> 00:27:12.319
That's the big deal.
00:27:12.559 --> 00:27:16.640
We did contact tracing, kind of like you everybody knew from COVID.
00:27:17.039 --> 00:27:20.799
Everybody knew that word, contact those two words, contact tracing.
00:27:21.039 --> 00:27:23.759
The annoying public health people that kept calling you.
00:27:24.400 --> 00:27:25.279
Are you sick yet?
00:27:25.440 --> 00:27:26.319
Are you sick yet?
00:27:26.480 --> 00:27:27.759
Stop calling me.
00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:30.400
I got hung up so many times during COVID.
00:27:30.640 --> 00:27:34.240
I worked the first six months of COVID, I got hung up on so many times.
00:27:34.400 --> 00:27:38.720
But it's important what public health is doing, and they've always done it.
00:27:38.799 --> 00:28:02.960
00:28:03.440 --> 00:28:04.000
Right.
00:28:04.240 --> 00:28:11.519
And so well during COVID, I had uh provincial police parked in my laneway for a few days, and that's the same as your like state troopers.
00:28:11.759 --> 00:28:15.279
Uh so that yeah, that was an exciting, uh, exciting time.
00:28:15.519 --> 00:28:16.640
Glad it's over.
00:28:16.960 --> 00:28:17.359
All right.
00:28:17.440 --> 00:28:18.480
I saw this article.
00:28:18.640 --> 00:28:22.880
I like to bring up service industry news, uh great partner with me.
00:28:23.039 --> 00:28:25.440
I write for them on a quarterly basis.
00:28:25.599 --> 00:28:29.680
I've been writing for them for like six years, so please check out their articles.
00:28:29.759 --> 00:28:33.839
They're a full online publication for the pool service industry.
00:28:34.079 --> 00:28:37.519
And their article, they've put everything in there, all kinds of stuff.
00:28:37.680 --> 00:28:42.000
I saw this and kind of like was putting it with after the cyclosphora here.
00:28:42.400 --> 00:29:11.039
00:29:12.960 --> 00:29:27.440
I think this has uh gotten, you know, some people probably over there upset because on the other side we worry about the children not being able to get swim lessons done and disruption in the learn to swim type thing.
00:29:27.680 --> 00:29:46.480
But then we could sit here and talk about if there's a poop incident and are it I mean, are they having that many that it's a problem that they have to like just say no to ages children one to four, or are they treating everything the wrong way and like closing the pool for the 12.75 hours?
00:29:47.039 --> 00:29:54.559
Well, I mean, that's that's the whole thing, and and you know, as a CPO instructor, I'm sure you probably go along the same route.
00:29:54.720 --> 00:29:58.880
If somebody is my age, your age has diarrhea, they're sick.
00:29:59.039 --> 00:30:00.000
It's as simple as that.
00:30:00.160 --> 00:30:02.079
I mean, there's no other reason for it.
00:30:02.400 --> 00:30:05.759
Babies traditionally do not have solid food.
00:30:05.839 --> 00:30:06.880
I mean, it's as simple as that.
00:30:06.960 --> 00:30:11.200
So just because they have diarrhea doesn't necessarily mean that they're sick.
00:30:11.359 --> 00:30:29.200
Now it doesn't mean that everybody wants to swim around it and stuff like that, but I mean I feel that a young child who is not ill should be treated more like a solid school incident than a diarrheal incident, just for the fact that we know that you know, chances are they don't have MRSA.
00:30:29.440 --> 00:30:34.480
Chances are they don't have one of these uh you know really bad diseases that we're trying to contain.
00:30:34.799 --> 00:30:40.160
Whereas, you know, teenagers and up, like 10 years old and up sort of thing, yeah.
00:30:40.240 --> 00:30:43.839
I mean, if they've got diarrhea, there's something that's just not right with their system.
00:30:44.640 --> 00:30:46.240
Oh, we bring up MRSA.
00:30:46.720 --> 00:31:01.680
I remember when we had an it that you know that's gonna be surfaces, and oh, I remember this one outbreak we had, and it we figured out it was the sharing of towels between the teenage kids at a summer.
00:31:03.279 --> 00:31:07.680
It was interesting that we were able to figure that out and backtrack it.
00:31:08.160 --> 00:31:11.519
Um so let's jump to our next topic.
00:31:11.599 --> 00:31:15.519
You know, I'm a pinball machine, so that's for me.
00:31:16.640 --> 00:31:24.640
Uh we're gonna talk about lightning safety because it is a summer and we got a lot of storms rolling through in different places.
00:31:24.880 --> 00:31:34.640
So I mean, what do you think policy should be when it comes to you know, we're outdoor workers and lightning is a safety hazard.
00:31:34.720 --> 00:31:38.480
And I've seen this brought up on social media a lot of times.
00:31:38.559 --> 00:31:39.839
Like, what is your policy?
00:31:40.000 --> 00:31:41.119
What do you do?
00:31:42.960 --> 00:31:46.640
Well, okay, so you guys know that I'm real sweet, right?
00:31:46.720 --> 00:31:49.039
So I'm made of sugar, I stay out of the rain.
00:31:49.200 --> 00:31:50.960
When it's raining, I just don't work in it.
00:31:51.039 --> 00:31:52.400
It's it's that simple.
00:31:52.640 --> 00:31:59.119
Uh now, way back a million years ago when I was lifeguarding, um, I was a lifeguard in an outdoor pool.
00:31:59.200 --> 00:32:03.920
So as soon as there was lightning, we had to evacuate the pool and send everybody home.
00:32:04.079 --> 00:32:10.000
And we weren't allowed to open the swimming pool back up until it had been at least a half an hour since the last thunder.
00:32:10.160 --> 00:32:12.960
And as you know, thunder travels for miles and miles.
00:32:13.279 --> 00:32:17.039
So at that point, we can declare a safe area.
00:32:17.279 --> 00:32:21.119
But up until then, no, it was complete like there was no interpretation.
00:32:21.279 --> 00:32:24.240
Close the pool down, get everybody out, bye bye, go home.
00:32:24.400 --> 00:32:29.680
And uh when the pools open back up again, you know, everything was being safe.
00:32:30.240 --> 00:32:39.440
Yeah, and down here, I I think Florida is known out of all 50 states as the lightning capital of the country or world or something.
00:32:39.519 --> 00:32:48.880
We get a lot of lightning, and so and we're servicing pools year-round down here, so and I'm sure Texas and other places as well.
00:32:49.119 --> 00:32:54.079
And so you deal with lightning quite a bit here almost on a daily basis.
00:32:54.640 --> 00:32:59.759
So don't risk yourself getting hit, it's not worth it.
00:33:00.720 --> 00:33:05.680
You if you can't go into a building or anything like that, the best place is go to your vehicle.
00:33:06.400 --> 00:33:13.519
Go to your vehicle, and there's a 30-30 rule that is taught in a lot of safety classes.
00:33:13.680 --> 00:33:20.319
The 30-30 rule, I can send it to you if you're interested, you contact me and I can send that to you.
00:33:20.880 --> 00:33:24.640
And it's counted out, and then it's safe to go back out.
00:33:25.200 --> 00:33:25.759
All right.
00:33:26.400 --> 00:33:29.759
I I remember I was working doing septic.
00:33:30.799 --> 00:33:55.039
00:33:55.279 --> 00:34:01.920
There's they know they make them, they know, and so it doesn't matter if it's not the old metal ones anymore.
00:34:02.000 --> 00:34:03.359
You're sitting there holding it.
00:34:03.599 --> 00:34:05.920
It's like, hit me, right?
00:34:06.079 --> 00:34:13.039
It's like, and then being being by the equipment with all the metal and everything else there, and electricity and everything.
00:34:13.119 --> 00:34:14.639
That's unsafe.
00:34:14.960 --> 00:34:16.559
Yeah, it's an unsafe place.
00:34:16.719 --> 00:34:19.280
It's again, hit me, hit me, hit me.
00:34:19.519 --> 00:34:20.559
Please, please, please.
00:34:20.639 --> 00:34:23.679
We care about you guys, the pool service pros out there.
00:34:23.840 --> 00:34:24.480
It matters.
00:34:24.639 --> 00:34:30.880
The safety that we're gonna talk about on this live podcast sometimes like this is very important.
00:34:31.039 --> 00:34:34.159
We care about all of you listening or not listening right now.
00:34:34.320 --> 00:34:42.400
We hope you become a listener, but we care about all of you in the industry across all countries, even Canada and everybody else.
00:34:42.639 --> 00:34:47.280
And make sure that you're it sounds easy and simple, but you know what?
00:34:47.360 --> 00:35:00.320
You need to sit down and have a staff meeting if you do have a staff of technicians and go over lightning safety because OSHA can come out if your employee gets hit and killed by lightning.
00:35:00.480 --> 00:35:14.079
It is a reportable death, and one single reportable death to OSHA in the United States, they will come out and do a full inspection of all your chemical safety, things you might be lacking, and everything else.
00:35:14.320 --> 00:35:19.679
They're not just gonna look at what caused the death of that one employee, they're gonna just check out everything while they're there.
00:35:19.760 --> 00:35:22.559
They figure if this happened, what else is going on?
00:35:22.639 --> 00:35:24.960
And they're gonna start getting in.
00:35:25.119 --> 00:35:27.199
So let's talk safety more.
00:35:27.360 --> 00:35:32.239
I know people are like, oh, come on, duh, lightning's outside, I shouldn't be out there.
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:34.960
But there are people that push it, okay?
00:35:35.119 --> 00:35:36.639
Let's not push it.
00:35:36.880 --> 00:35:42.079
Um a lot of times these storms blow through and then it's safe to go back out, you know.
00:35:42.320 --> 00:35:54.159
Work on other things like communication with your customers, especially with your public pools, because I mean that always caused a lot of violations, people not knowing what was going on at the public pool.
00:35:54.480 --> 00:36:01.039
Well, isn't that a rule in Florida that Florida, because it's a peninsula, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it'll change?
00:36:01.360 --> 00:36:04.480
It yeah, we're it it can change pretty quickly here.
00:36:04.559 --> 00:36:12.639
I'll look outside and like the wind picked up and all of a sudden and it's like raining out, and I'm like, wasn't the sun just out?
00:36:12.880 --> 00:36:14.320
It it's strange here.
00:36:15.039 --> 00:36:18.400
Um I I'm not looking forward to the season coming up.
00:36:18.480 --> 00:36:19.360
We're in it now.
00:36:19.519 --> 00:36:23.599
As soon as August, I start getting a little anxious.
00:36:23.760 --> 00:36:29.679
I have that anxiety a little bit, but not nearly as much as people that live outside the Florida.
00:36:29.840 --> 00:36:33.119
Like tropical storms, they don't get me uh excited.
00:36:33.280 --> 00:36:36.559
Okay, it's gonna be those hurricanes.
00:36:36.880 --> 00:36:42.639
I went through the 2004 two of them that hit the Linux coast here and lost a house.
00:36:42.960 --> 00:36:44.559
Right, ceilings fell in.
00:36:44.639 --> 00:36:46.239
So I I'm getting a little anxious.
00:36:46.320 --> 00:36:48.480
I'm anxious till about mid-October.
00:36:48.639 --> 00:36:52.239
Then I'm like, Well, nicely, we don't get too much severe weather.
00:36:52.400 --> 00:36:57.920
Uh, we've been getting a lot of tornadoes recently for some reason or another, but uh, you know, come and go.
00:36:58.159 --> 00:37:00.639
Um, but I am looking forward to the end of the season.
00:37:00.719 --> 00:37:02.400
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
00:37:02.480 --> 00:37:05.840
Uh starting to get all psyched up and motivated and stuff.
00:37:05.920 --> 00:37:08.559
And I had to open a swimming pool yesterday.
00:37:08.880 --> 00:37:13.119
Oh, yeah, oh my gosh.
00:37:13.280 --> 00:37:20.400
So I'm familiar with the pool because I opened the pool two years ago, and it had like prehistoric stuff like swimming in it.
00:37:20.559 --> 00:37:26.480
They were like this long, and they look like those bugs off of Star Trek with the spiny legs and stuff like that.
00:37:26.639 --> 00:37:29.760
And it's like the faster I can get out of here, the better.
00:37:30.079 --> 00:37:35.599
So I roll into this guy's laneway and driveway, laneway, it's the same thing, guys.
00:37:35.679 --> 00:37:36.239
So relax.
00:37:36.639 --> 00:37:44.559
I roll down the window, Canadian, and Buddy is standing there, and I said, I'm told I'm here to open your pool.
00:37:44.639 --> 00:37:50.800
And he says, Yeah, he says, We didn't open it last year either, and the water's a little black.
00:37:51.119 --> 00:37:52.559
It's like, buddy, no shit.
00:37:52.639 --> 00:37:53.760
It's August.
00:37:54.960 --> 00:37:56.000
Bad language.
00:37:56.239 --> 00:37:57.599
Bad language.
00:38:00.159 --> 00:38:06.320
So he's gonna he's gonna spend three weeks getting the water clear so that it's nice and clean when somebody closes the pool for him.
00:38:07.679 --> 00:38:09.360
It's like, come on.
00:38:09.599 --> 00:38:13.199
He's gonna open it and then close it in like two days.
00:38:13.519 --> 00:38:16.480
Yeah, because we start closing pools at the beginning of September.
00:38:16.719 --> 00:38:18.800
Yeah, it's like when the kids go back to school.
00:38:19.599 --> 00:38:21.119
We're in August dude already.
00:38:21.199 --> 00:38:22.239
It's Canada.
00:38:22.559 --> 00:38:24.320
Yeah, and the water was black.
00:38:24.559 --> 00:38:27.119
I have to tease Rob here because he's from Canada.
00:38:27.280 --> 00:38:28.320
This one I always do.
00:38:28.559 --> 00:38:36.159
Notice when we I mentioned restroom or bathroom earlier, and then he called it the what do you call it, Rob?
00:38:36.239 --> 00:38:36.559
Go.
00:38:36.800 --> 00:38:37.599
Washroom?
00:38:37.840 --> 00:38:38.880
The washroom.
00:38:38.960 --> 00:38:42.559
So I wanted to make sure everybody knew what the washroom is.
00:38:43.599 --> 00:38:46.400
It's also in in the UK, it's called a water closet.
00:38:46.800 --> 00:38:47.840
So chill out.
00:38:48.079 --> 00:38:53.039
Well, a lot of our health agencies call them health clo or water closets in the health code.
00:38:53.440 --> 00:38:54.000
All right.
00:38:54.400 --> 00:39:03.119
This last one I thought was interesting again, saw in service industry news, but I also saw it posted somewhere else before this as well.
00:39:03.360 --> 00:39:05.360
And this is Florida only.
00:39:06.079 --> 00:39:10.559
Florida expands their sexual offender law.
00:39:10.800 --> 00:39:22.239
So registered sex offenders against minors cannot live now within a thousand feet of public pools and slash pads.
00:39:23.360 --> 00:39:29.599
And if you knew Florida and how they defined a public pool, that you'd look at and go, wow.
00:39:30.480 --> 00:39:36.960
Because an apartment complex pool is a public pool, so is that like they can't live there now?
00:39:37.440 --> 00:39:43.920
An HOA is regulated as a public pool, so they can't live in a gated HOA community homeowner association.
00:39:44.239 --> 00:39:51.840
A condo owner association, a COA is also a public pool with their pool there, so they can't live where can they live now?
00:39:51.920 --> 00:39:54.880
Because they can't be by schools and daycare.
00:39:55.280 --> 00:39:58.000
It's like I j I I know they're bad people.
00:39:58.079 --> 00:40:01.039
I'm just saying, wow, that's interesting.
00:40:01.199 --> 00:40:09.199
It's like it's really gonna limit where are they are they really trying to put them on an island off the coast of Florida or something?
00:40:09.760 --> 00:40:10.800
Uh you know what?
00:40:10.960 --> 00:40:14.880
I've yeah, I I am I saying it's a good thing.
00:40:15.119 --> 00:40:18.079
I mean, protecting the kids absolutely is a good thing.
00:40:18.400 --> 00:40:25.519
But it's also been my experience that government just kind of jams in a law without actually looking at it and says we'll fix it later.
00:40:25.679 --> 00:40:36.159
And this might be one of those things where they put this law in, and if the person's living there and stays off the radar, nobody's gonna say anything, right?
00:40:36.559 --> 00:40:44.719
But the second somebody says something, it's gonna turn into, well, you should have known better and enjoy your three hots in the cot.
00:40:44.800 --> 00:40:45.840
You know what I mean?
00:40:46.159 --> 00:40:47.599
I just thought it was interesting.
00:40:47.920 --> 00:40:52.320
Wanted my Florida listeners to be aware that might be going on.
00:40:52.480 --> 00:41:05.519
If you see somebody getting arrested while you're servicing that public pool, you know, it's probably it could be their assets offender and they're not supposed to be within a thousand feet of that pool that you're cleaning that's a public pool.
00:41:05.599 --> 00:41:07.760
And a lot of people think it's everything though.
00:41:08.159 --> 00:41:13.119
A thousand feet from a public pool, five hundred feet from a schoolyard.
00:41:13.280 --> 00:41:21.039
Uh, you know, by the time we put all the restrictions and regulations in place, we might as well build some kind of a resort out in the middle of Death Valley.
00:41:21.440 --> 00:41:27.920
Because that's the only place where you're not going to be able to bounce off of one of these boundaries.
00:41:29.119 --> 00:41:29.679
All right.
00:41:29.840 --> 00:41:32.159
I have my last thing I want to bring up.
00:41:32.239 --> 00:41:45.199
We'll talk about uh next time around, we'll talk about test kit interferences because a lot of listeners might not be aware of you know your manual test kit and the four big interferences that happen.
00:41:45.360 --> 00:41:46.880
We'll talk about that next time.
00:41:47.039 --> 00:41:49.519
I want to talk about alkalinity, total alkalinity.
00:41:49.599 --> 00:41:51.760
Why is total alkalinity so important?
00:41:53.280 --> 00:41:54.800
Oh, yeah, I'm sorry, are you asking me?
00:41:55.039 --> 00:41:58.880
Yeah, I'm throwing it out to you so they don't have to hear me talk, they've already heard me talk enough.
00:41:59.119 --> 00:42:00.639
I'm gonna let you talk more.
00:42:01.360 --> 00:42:01.760
Oh, okay.
00:42:01.840 --> 00:42:06.079
Well, I mean we use we use alkalinity in our pool of water as a buffer for pH.
00:42:06.320 --> 00:42:08.239
It helps keep it from dropping down.
00:42:08.400 --> 00:42:11.440
Uh, it also sets the ceiling for your pH.
00:42:11.519 --> 00:42:16.239
So the higher your alkalinity, the higher your pH is going to climb in the pool of water.
00:42:16.719 --> 00:42:23.119
Um what else?
00:42:23.440 --> 00:42:25.119
Alkalinity is so important.
00:42:25.280 --> 00:42:26.639
That's why I was bringing it up.
00:42:26.800 --> 00:42:49.280
00:42:49.840 --> 00:42:53.840
And so that's all they're testing, and so they don't have the full big test kit.
00:42:54.159 --> 00:43:08.239
And the importance of total alkalinity, guys, you gotta test for it every week at your residential, know where it's at, because it is the number one factor that you gotta look at for water balance.
00:43:08.480 --> 00:43:16.400
Chapter sits, if you take a CPO class or any pool operator course, water balance, water balance, water balance, right?
00:43:16.639 --> 00:43:22.079
Well, I mean, even the most basic test strips, test for sanitizer, pH, and alkalinity.
00:43:22.320 --> 00:43:23.840
The most basic strips.
00:43:24.000 --> 00:43:30.400
So if they're telling you right there that those are the three most important things to check, you should always be checking them.
00:43:30.639 --> 00:43:31.280
Yep.
00:43:31.519 --> 00:43:32.159
Yep.
00:43:32.639 --> 00:43:35.199
So been wonderful on here.
00:43:35.360 --> 00:43:47.840
Uh I just want to get some shout-outs to who is on the been on the live Instagram because it's kind of exciting to hear at least your your name, your handle, I'll call it.
00:43:48.000 --> 00:43:49.199
I call it a handle.
00:43:49.360 --> 00:43:54.800
My my brother's always been on uh C V radio and he calls it his handle.
00:43:55.119 --> 00:43:57.679
Stage name, whatever we want to call it.
00:43:58.400 --> 00:43:59.840
Any questions from Abdul this week?
00:44:00.559 --> 00:44:03.760
Um, I don't see anything from him, no.
00:44:04.320 --> 00:44:04.639
Okay.
00:44:04.960 --> 00:44:10.800
Um, let's see, we got Toasty73 that was on Instagram live.
00:44:11.280 --> 00:44:20.000
Uh KellMCD88, Yagari, XLNT pool, so that's awesome.
00:44:20.159 --> 00:44:22.320
Signature pooled spa, awesome.
00:44:22.800 --> 00:44:23.760
Nice to have you on.
00:44:24.000 --> 00:44:31.199
Murphy G5150, uh, Desert Promotions, not sure what you do, but that's cool.
00:44:31.360 --> 00:44:33.920
Thank you for listening into the podcast.
00:44:34.239 --> 00:44:39.440
And uh Albert Alberto Lugo176.
00:44:40.559 --> 00:44:46.159
So thank you so much for joining on the live Instagram.
00:44:46.639 --> 00:44:47.840
And joining me.
00:44:49.119 --> 00:44:50.719
Yes, both of us.
00:44:50.960 --> 00:44:55.360
Uh Rob, my co-anchor, and and myself, Lauren Groom.
00:44:55.440 --> 00:44:59.119
I gotta do a few more uh fun sounds here.
00:44:59.199 --> 00:45:00.480
Let's see what can I do.
00:45:00.719 --> 00:45:04.400
Oh, I should have done this one with the lightning safety thing.
00:45:09.039 --> 00:45:11.119
I'm not hearing anything at this end.
00:45:11.360 --> 00:45:13.840
Oh, it's not even playing on that side?
00:45:14.000 --> 00:45:14.480
I'm hoping.
00:45:14.960 --> 00:45:15.519
Not on my side.
00:45:16.639 --> 00:45:20.639
It lightning safety it was a it was thunder and lightning sound.
00:45:21.039 --> 00:45:21.760
Alright.
00:45:22.079 --> 00:45:26.400
So let I I think that's a wrap for us this week.
00:45:26.559 --> 00:45:28.880
We'll see everybody in two weeks.
00:45:29.119 --> 00:45:32.960
The next live uh let's talk about pools podcasts.
00:45:33.119 --> 00:45:35.360
Uh we'll be while you're looking that up.
00:45:35.440 --> 00:45:38.960
If anybody out there knows anything about PowerPoint, please hit me up.
00:45:39.119 --> 00:45:42.559
Uh it's been making me absolutely insane for the last week.
00:45:42.719 --> 00:45:48.800
All of a sudden, PowerPoint says there's no app uh available to read these PowerPoint files.
00:45:48.960 --> 00:45:52.000
It's like I haven't been able to figure it out.
00:45:52.320 --> 00:45:53.280
Oh no.
00:45:54.320 --> 00:45:57.519
Well, the next live, let's talk about pools podcast.
00:45:57.679 --> 00:46:01.039
We will see you guys live on You didn't give the date.
00:46:01.920 --> 00:46:05.039
Tuesday, August 18th.
00:46:05.199 --> 00:46:07.840
Two weeks from the 10 a.m.
00:46:08.079 --> 00:46:08.639
Eastern Time.
00:46:08.880 --> 00:46:10.639
Looking forward to seeing everybody on there.
00:46:10.719 --> 00:46:26.079
And as as always, this podcast episode will be posted as a recorded version within a week onto the uh Space Cool School website uh where my podcast kind of lies.
00:46:26.239 --> 00:46:28.480

So this episode will be recorded there and up on my website under resources.
00:46:40.960 --> 00:46:43.679
Go to cpocertified.com.
00:46:43.840 --> 00:46:48.559
And as always, thank you for listening to the never know.
00:46:49.199 --> 00:46:51.760
Maybe by next time I'll have my super sexy shirt.
00:46:52.000 --> 00:46:56.159
Apparently, they're just uh sewing reams of uh fabric together to make it.
00:46:56.320 --> 00:46:58.960
So maybe I'll have my uh fancy dancey shirt next year.
00:47:01.280 --> 00:47:10.880
But the collared shirt version, he wants to look all professional and everything, and it's gonna be tight fitting so we can see Robert.
00:47:11.119 --> 00:47:12.159
I don't want a tight fitting.
00:47:14.000 --> 00:47:15.920
I make them tight fitting on my own.
00:47:16.079 --> 00:47:16.800
Thanks.
00:47:17.119 --> 00:47:26.079
All right, thank you for listening, everybody, to the live Let's Talk About Pools podcast uh with me and Rob Stewart, my co-anchor, and we'll see you in two weeks.

00:47:28.159 --> 00:47:29.599
Um, very happy about that.
00:47:29.679 --> 00:47:31.280
And no, that's not my voice.
00:47:31.440 --> 00:47:36.719
That is a very nice lady who has a much nicer voice than mine.
00:47:37.440 --> 00:47:41.280
All right, see you next time, everybody, and see you next time too, Rob.
00:47:41.760 --> 00:47:42.480
Yeah, thanks.
00:47:42.559 --> 00:47:44.000
Stay safe, guys.
