00:00:05.660 --> 00:00:12.410
Welcome to the Great Adventurers of Old Time Radio. From Boise, Idaho,
2
00:00:12.470 --> 00:00:15.669
this is your host, Adam Graham. In a moment, we're
3
00:00:15.689 --> 00:00:20.190
going to bring you this week's episode of Counterspy. But first,

to patreon.greatdetectives.net. I do want to go ahead and warn
12
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:58.100
that the audio quality on today's episode is listenable, but
13
00:00:58.280 --> 00:01:01.810
not at the level that we've come to expect of
14
00:01:01.890 --> 00:01:08.769
Counterspy over the last few months. But now, from February 13th, 1950,
15
00:01:08.769 --> 00:01:11.930
here is Counterfeit Traveler's Checks.
16
00:01:14.109 --> 00:01:15.489
And now to Counterspy.
17
00:01:22.689 --> 00:01:28.799
Well, I got.
18
00:01:28.540 --> 00:01:30.659
An order for you. Just the right kind of an
19
00:01:30.680 --> 00:01:31.739
eye for it. A car?
20
00:01:32.060 --> 00:01:35.540
Look, I'll wait for you in the car. You handle
21
00:01:35.560 --> 00:01:37.519
Steve Morris alone. There's nobody else here on the wall.
22
00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:41.010
Nothing's doing, pal. Officer Lusky said you're in on this
23
00:01:41.049 --> 00:01:44.189
with me and your study. Hey, it's coming out of
24
00:01:44.250 --> 00:01:53.140
the dark now. Got the bottle? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I
25
00:01:53.159 --> 00:01:57.439
got your message to meet you. What's up? No more, Steve.
26
00:01:57.480 --> 00:01:57.640
What?
27
00:01:58.959 --> 00:02:02.120
What's the idea of the gun? Steve, Count Zaleski don't
28
00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:05.909
like competition. Competition? Especially for one of his own passes.
29
00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:07.750
I don't know what you're talking about, that's it.
30
00:02:07.849 --> 00:02:10.270
I can't find out about your setting up shop for
31
00:02:10.310 --> 00:02:13.229
yourself on 12th Street to cut phony traveler's checks.
32
00:02:13.270 --> 00:02:14.870
Lou, get your... I can explain.
33
00:02:14.909 --> 00:02:17.849
That's why Carl's got that bottle of engraving acid in
34
00:02:17.909 --> 00:02:18.389
his hand.
35
00:02:19.389 --> 00:02:21.669
Hitcher, the count's orders is to get rid of you
36
00:02:21.689 --> 00:02:24.150
the best way. Hitcher, don't. Yes, it is the best
37
00:02:24.189 --> 00:02:33.180
way I know of. Okay, go ahead. Give it to him.
38
00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:39.379
All counter-spy field officers, stand by. This is headquarters Washington.
39
00:02:39.740 --> 00:02:46.069
A special message from Mr. David Harding. This is David Harding.
40
00:02:46.509 --> 00:02:49.240
One of the cleverest counterfeiting rings in criminal history is
41
00:02:49.300 --> 00:02:50.759
now operating.
42
00:02:50.300 --> 00:02:51.219
In high gear.
43
00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:55.680
This gang specializes in passing fake traveler checks and has
44
00:02:55.699 --> 00:02:58.340
to date cashed over a half a million dollars worth
45
00:02:58.479 --> 00:03:02.729
in 37 states. All counters by field officers will immediately
46
00:03:02.770 --> 00:03:06.969
contact local police authorities and set up cooperation plan R3.
47
00:03:07.729 --> 00:03:21.659
Reports will be radioed daily to this headquarters. Hello? Hilda?
48
00:03:22.330 --> 00:03:27.409
This is Carl. Okay to talk? Yes, yes, Carl. What
49
00:03:27.449 --> 00:03:28.250
about Count Zaleski?
50
00:03:28.629 --> 00:03:30.449
He's down in the basement of the house with Etcher.
51
00:03:30.469 --> 00:03:32.590
They're in the print shop. Carl, I've been waiting for
52
00:03:32.610 --> 00:03:34.870
your call for hours. I was afraid you'd run out
53
00:03:34.930 --> 00:03:36.780
on me. What, me run out on you, Hilda?
54
00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:39.280
Listen, you and I are going to cash in on
55
00:03:39.319 --> 00:03:42.599
those printing plates together, just like I promised. Do you
56
00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:46.240
have the plates with you, Carl? I got them where
57
00:03:46.259 --> 00:03:49.590
they're nice and safe. How did John take it when
58
00:03:49.629 --> 00:03:52.909
he found the plates were gone? Thought he could get
59
00:03:52.949 --> 00:03:56.729
away with throwing me crumbs. I showed him, didn't I, baby? Uh, Carl,
60
00:03:56.909 --> 00:04:00.090
when do I meet you and where? I'm up in
61
00:04:00.569 --> 00:04:01.409
White Plains, Hilda.
62
00:04:01.430 --> 00:04:05.930
Remember that spot outside town where we parked on our
63
00:04:05.949 --> 00:04:06.449
first date?
64
00:04:06.629 --> 00:04:10.509
Uh-huh. I'll be waiting for you there. I'll start right away, Carl.
65
00:04:10.930 --> 00:04:13.550
From here on, honey, it's just you and me and
66
00:04:13.590 --> 00:04:21.199
a nice fat million bucks thanks to the Miley Hilda?
67
00:04:22.459 --> 00:04:25.920
It's all range, Count Zaleski. He's waiting for me up
68
00:04:25.939 --> 00:04:29.560
at White Plains. And the plates? He says he has
69
00:04:29.579 --> 00:04:35.079
them in a safe place. Hilda performed excellently. Don't you think, Hector? Sure.
70
00:04:35.100 --> 00:04:38.500
As a regular captain, I have fun. Count, I feel
71
00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:44.709
like such a... Well, Carl isn't a bad choice. What's
72
00:04:44.730 --> 00:04:46.050
the idea of slapping me?
73
00:04:46.129 --> 00:04:48.589
To remind you, my dear Hilda, just what a bad
74
00:04:48.629 --> 00:04:50.040
sort Kong is.
75
00:04:50.060 --> 00:04:55.180
Low despicable feet. Slimy double courses. Makes one lose faith
76
00:04:55.240 --> 00:04:56.000
in human nature.
77
00:04:56.040 --> 00:04:58.240
Three months of my best and clever work went into
78
00:04:58.279 --> 00:05:00.100
those plates for the new Travers checks.
79
00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:01.339
Real masterpiece.
80
00:05:01.379 --> 00:05:04.490
And even more important than Etcher's professional pride is the
81
00:05:04.529 --> 00:05:08.449
tremendous financial setback. My passers throughout the country are awaiting
82
00:05:08.490 --> 00:05:11.089
the shipment of new checks. In the meantime, my press
83
00:05:11.110 --> 00:05:16.300
in the basement stands idle. Million-dollar business. Hilda stands still.
84
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:19.040
And you have the temerity to say Carl is not
85
00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:22.910
a bad sort. Really, Hilda, I'm ashamed of you.
86
00:05:24.269 --> 00:05:27.930
As you bring the car around, you'll go keep Hilda's
87
00:05:28.009 --> 00:05:30.870
date with Carl. Yeah.
88
00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:43.029
Carl, any untoward move and I'll fire this automatic without hesitation.
89
00:05:43.170 --> 00:05:46.189
Now, honest, Con, Celestia, you got it all wrong.
90
00:05:46.209 --> 00:05:49.730
That's a knife right beside Hilda when you spoke to
91
00:05:49.750 --> 00:05:50.569
her on the phone.
92
00:05:50.589 --> 00:05:53.430
She's a liar. She probably took the plates herself. You
93
00:05:53.889 --> 00:05:57.459
can't trust a dame like Hilda in the police. Yeah, yeah, Con. Well,
94
00:05:57.480 --> 00:05:58.779
if Con wants to hear out of you as a
95
00:05:58.819 --> 00:06:01.420
place where you had the plates hidden. Con, I wouldn't
96
00:06:01.459 --> 00:06:04.040
try to pull a fast one on you. Side road, Con.
97
00:06:05.610 --> 00:06:08.329
Carl, I'm going to let Etcher have a session with you.
98
00:06:08.709 --> 00:06:11.920
But I told you... Perhaps recall the session with Steve
99
00:06:12.009 --> 00:06:13.300
Morris last month.
100
00:06:13.860 --> 00:06:16.800
I brought an extra large bottle of engraving ass for me.
101
00:06:17.500 --> 00:06:21.040
Etcher, I'm sure Carl vividly recalls there was hardly enough
102
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:22.500
left of Steve Morris.
103
00:06:22.180 --> 00:06:25.920
To make a decent burial. Count, if I tell you
104
00:06:25.939 --> 00:06:28.439
where the plates are, will you give me a break?
105
00:06:29.819 --> 00:06:32.000
Where are they? I promise you, Count, you won't let
106
00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:36.410
Etcher do that to me. I promise. I won't permit
107
00:06:36.569 --> 00:06:42.389
Etcher to touch you. Where are the plates? Yeah. In
108
00:06:42.439 --> 00:06:46.620
a locker in Grand Central Station. The key to the locker?
109
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:49.180
Right here in my coat. Come on. I'll reach in
110
00:06:49.240 --> 00:06:55.360
and get it. I have it, Etcher. Now everything's okay.
111
00:06:56.019 --> 00:06:58.329
Now you get the plates back. You'll let me go?
112
00:06:58.829 --> 00:07:03.939
Of course, Carlton. Open the door. Huh? You heard the cop.
113
00:07:04.379 --> 00:07:06.660
Open the door to the cop. You're going to jump.
114
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:06.730
Out, cop.
115
00:07:06.779 --> 00:07:09.339
No, but, cop, you promised you'd give me a break.
116
00:07:09.660 --> 00:07:16.170
This is it. We're only doing 40 miles an hour. Now, cop. Now, cop, please. No, please.
117
00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:22.110
Get out. Cop, what if the cop didn't finish him off?
118
00:07:22.990 --> 00:07:24.009
Pull up and turn back.
119
00:07:24.069 --> 00:07:24.389
That's it.
120
00:07:30.459 --> 00:07:32.779
Well, if he's alive and someone picks him up, he'll talk.
121
00:07:32.860 --> 00:07:35.759
You should have let me give him the acid treatment.
122
00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:38.430
We're doing this the way I planned.
123
00:07:38.970 --> 00:07:44.290
Okay, cop. You're the boss. Hey, look up ahead, cop. Man,
124
00:07:44.970 --> 00:07:47.370
trying to crawl up the road. Took a smart fall.
125
00:07:48.189 --> 00:07:53.500
Hey, he's just coming. Step on it. More speed. He's
126
00:07:53.540 --> 00:07:56.860
crawling faster. More speed. More speed.
127
00:07:58.810 --> 00:07:59.350
Now, that's it.
128
00:07:59.370 --> 00:08:11.439
Get him. Stop! Hello, Hilda. Quick, let me talk to
129
00:08:11.449 --> 00:08:12.079
the count.
130
00:08:12.100 --> 00:08:12.459
Yes, Dr.
131
00:08:12.500 --> 00:08:12.720
Miller.
132
00:08:13.399 --> 00:08:17.139
Count Valesky, that's her. What's the matter with you, that's her?
133
00:08:17.220 --> 00:08:18.680
I told you to come right back here to the
134
00:08:18.740 --> 00:08:21.319
house after you picked up the plates at Grand Central.
135
00:08:21.339 --> 00:08:23.959
Carl pulled a fast one on us. The plates aren't there.
136
00:08:24.040 --> 00:08:34.830
Carl's locker was empty. Harding, Washington, calling Peters at Baltimore
137
00:08:34.850 --> 00:08:35.350
Field Office.
138
00:08:35.409 --> 00:08:38.620
Peters, Baltimore Field Office.
139
00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:39.519
Go ahead, Chief.
140
00:08:40.039 --> 00:08:41.940
I'm leaving my office now to get the 5 o'clock
141
00:08:41.980 --> 00:08:44.460
train for New York. You board the train at Baltimore
142
00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:47.279
and meet me car 4, compartment C.
143
00:08:47.639 --> 00:08:48.500
What's up, Mr. Harding?
144
00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.529
With a surprise break in the traveler check fraud, Peters,
145
00:08:51.730 --> 00:08:53.309
I'll fill you in on the details on the way
146
00:08:53.330 --> 00:09:07.639
to New York. Peter, the counterfeit engraving plates are now
147
00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:08.220
in our New.
148
00:09:08.139 --> 00:09:10.139
York field office. How'd we get them, Ted?
149
00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:14.179
Right before last, a man named Carl Walton was found
150
00:09:14.200 --> 00:09:17.470
dead on a dirt road north of White Plains, New York. Apparently,
151
00:09:17.490 --> 00:09:21.070
the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Apparently, while our agents
152
00:09:21.110 --> 00:09:23.250
went over the scene of the accident, they found evidence
153
00:09:23.289 --> 00:09:26.230
that Walton had tried to crawl off the road before
154
00:09:26.269 --> 00:09:26.970
the car hit him.
155
00:09:27.610 --> 00:09:28.889
Why are interests in Walton, Ted?
156
00:09:28.909 --> 00:09:32.789
Two previous convictions as a passer of counterfeit money. So
157
00:09:32.860 --> 00:09:34.679
Brayden from the New York office went to the rooming
158
00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:37.399
house where this Walton had lived. The landlady turned a
159
00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:39.720
package over to Brayden that Walton had left with her
160
00:09:39.779 --> 00:09:40.580
for safekeeping.
161
00:09:40.779 --> 00:09:43.299
And the package contained the traveler check plates. Right, Peter.
162
00:09:44.279 --> 00:09:47.039
The landlady was also helpful in another way. There's a
163
00:09:47.100 --> 00:09:48.799
coin phone in the rooming house.
164
00:09:48.899 --> 00:09:51.190
And she recalled that Walton spoke on the phone many
165
00:09:51.250 --> 00:09:54.269
times to someone he called Count Zaleski.
166
00:09:54.629 --> 00:09:55.289
Count Zaleski?
167
00:09:55.850 --> 00:09:58.909
Our old friend the International Swindler. According to our periodic
168
00:09:58.929 --> 00:09:59.710
surveillance reports.
169
00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:02.519
He arrived back here in the States from Argentina six
170
00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:05.100
months ago. He rented a brownstone house on East 86th
171
00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:07.580
Street in New York City. An operation like the phony
172
00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.799
traveler's check syndicate would be right up his alley, Dad.
173
00:10:10.659 --> 00:10:13.019
Looks like Zaleski's our boy, all right. Well, we can
174
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:15.320
pick him up for questioning, but when we take him in,
175
00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:17.299
I want to make sure that we have all.
176
00:10:17.139 --> 00:10:21.350
The evidence we need. Oh, by the way, Peter, remember
177
00:10:21.389 --> 00:10:22.710
my friend Mickey Alvin?
178
00:10:23.389 --> 00:10:25.860
The Colby City bootlack who sends his savings to the
179
00:10:25.899 --> 00:10:26.980
Counterspy Fund?
180
00:10:27.460 --> 00:10:29.940
You said you hoped to meet him sometime. Well, here's
181
00:10:29.980 --> 00:10:31.539
his latest letter. Oh, let's see.
182
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:33.779
Dear Mr.
183
00:10:33.820 --> 00:10:37.320
David Harding, I'm very glad you put my money in
184
00:10:37.340 --> 00:10:40.059
the fund. It makes me feel like I am part
185
00:10:40.100 --> 00:10:41.620
of your wonderful bunch of fellows.
186
00:10:42.529 --> 00:10:43.269
Even if it's only $ 2.
187
00:10:43.169 --> 00:10:43.230
62.
188
00:10:43.210 --> 00:10:48.450
Quite a boy, huh? Last week, I had a very
189
00:10:48.490 --> 00:10:49.149
good week, Mr.
190
00:10:49.210 --> 00:10:52.370
Harding, because there was a big convention in Colby City,
191
00:10:52.409 --> 00:10:56.340
and I picked up a lot extra in tips. I
192
00:10:56.360 --> 00:10:58.200
figured that if I take a bus and back, I
193
00:10:58.220 --> 00:11:01.600
could take a trip to Washington pretty soon. I know
194
00:11:01.620 --> 00:11:04.019
this is asking pretty much, but could I at least
195
00:11:04.139 --> 00:11:06.460
walk through the counter-spy main building?
196
00:11:08.460 --> 00:11:10.919
I wouldn't bother anybody. I'd just like to walk through.
197
00:11:10.940 --> 00:11:13.820
And if I knew I could do that, I would
198
00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:16.950
work extra hard and save every cent. I hope this
199
00:11:17.009 --> 00:11:18.529
is not asking too much, Mr. Hunting.
200
00:11:18.549 --> 00:11:20.789
I'm surely Nicky Allen.
201
00:11:21.350 --> 00:11:23.230
Well, I wrote him, Peter, that he can not only
202
00:11:23.269 --> 00:11:24.950
walk through the building, but he can come and have
203
00:11:25.009 --> 00:11:27.789
lunch or dinner with us, whichever he likes. Oughtn't you
204
00:11:27.830 --> 00:11:29.830
to send him the money, Dave? Well, the way I
205
00:11:29.850 --> 00:11:31.629
think of that boy, he likes to make his own way.
206
00:11:31.720 --> 00:11:33.200
Let him earn the trip, and then I'll give him
207
00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:35.080
the money when he starts back for Colby City.
208
00:11:35.129 --> 00:11:41.399
Good hunch, Dave. Um, what's your plan now about Count Zaleski? Oh, yes,
209
00:11:41.419 --> 00:11:45.500
I didn't tell you, did I? Uh-oh. Here I go again.
210
00:11:45.519 --> 00:11:45.840
That's right.
211
00:11:46.840 --> 00:11:49.059
Only this time, when you go undercover, Peter, it's going
212
00:11:49.100 --> 00:12:03.769
to be much more risky than usual.
213
00:12:04.289 --> 00:12:06.470
Well, now, I told you to stay away from that window.
214
00:12:07.090 --> 00:12:09.009
But, Count Gillespie, I just wanted to see if that
215
00:12:09.070 --> 00:12:11.240
man was still watching his house from across the street.
216
00:12:11.250 --> 00:12:15.679
Of course he is. He may be from the police. Well,
217
00:12:15.700 --> 00:12:20.159
we'll soon find out. Hatcher. Yeah, Tom Selesky?
218
00:12:20.820 --> 00:12:27.789
Come on upstairs. I got a more important job for
219
00:12:27.809 --> 00:12:31.830
you at the moment. And, uh, Hatcher, bring your gun
220
00:12:31.870 --> 00:12:32.309
with you.
221
00:12:32.330 --> 00:12:43.720
Hey, okay, you don't have to shove it.
222
00:12:49.240 --> 00:12:51.960
Why were you standing across the street watching this house?
223
00:12:52.750 --> 00:12:53.179
Oh, me?
224
00:12:54.789 --> 00:12:57.970
You answer a question with an answer, not a question.
225
00:12:58.450 --> 00:13:00.250
You wouldn't be so free with that midi-ear that you
226
00:13:00.289 --> 00:13:01.509
didn't have a rod on the other one.
227
00:13:01.769 --> 00:13:04.269
Consuleski, he doesn't sound as if he's from the police.
228
00:13:04.289 --> 00:13:07.620
Keep out of this, is he? Well, are you prepared
229
00:13:07.659 --> 00:13:09.200
to answer my question now?
230
00:13:09.220 --> 00:13:12.820
I'm standing over there waiting for an invitation to come in.
231
00:13:12.840 --> 00:13:17.100
Who are you? You mean in New York? That's, uh...
232
00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:17.960
All right, all right.
233
00:13:19.110 --> 00:13:22.509
Don't take me long to catch on. My name's Vince Powell.
234
00:13:23.070 --> 00:13:24.629
I used to be tied up at the Tyler crowd
235
00:13:24.669 --> 00:13:27.600
in Mason City. I got out of the jug there
236
00:13:27.620 --> 00:13:28.899
a couple of months ago and I come east to
237
00:13:28.940 --> 00:13:31.820
look up an old friend of mine. What friend, Powell?
238
00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:32.960
Carl Walton.
239
00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:37.679
Too bad about what happened to Carl, eh, Chancellor? I
240
00:13:38.779 --> 00:13:42.610
don't know any Carl Walton. Now look, Cal, if you
241
00:13:42.629 --> 00:13:44.289
and me are going to do any business, let's talk
242
00:13:44.309 --> 00:13:45.000
him the up and up, hmm?
243
00:13:46.110 --> 00:13:49.190
Carl was working for you before he had that accident.
244
00:13:50.190 --> 00:13:54.440
This guy's twice. How about that, Jack? Carl, you said
245
00:13:54.460 --> 00:13:58.399
something about our doing business. Carl left something for me
246
00:13:58.440 --> 00:14:00.600
to hold for him. The plates.
247
00:14:01.759 --> 00:14:03.940
Count, your boy here is a real genius, ain't he?
248
00:14:04.039 --> 00:14:07.960
About that business, Carl. Well, putting counterfeit ain't in my line.
249
00:14:07.980 --> 00:14:11.019
So I figured I'd put those plates on the market.
250
00:14:12.389 --> 00:14:14.169
I also figured that I ought to give you first
251
00:14:14.190 --> 00:14:20.820
chance to buy them. Where are the plates now? You
252
00:14:20.840 --> 00:14:24.860
know something, Cap? I think I got a temporary loss
253
00:14:24.919 --> 00:14:32.919
of memory. And you know something, Power? I admire you.
254
00:14:33.340 --> 00:14:33.740
Sure.
255
00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:37.590
I'm a grand guide. The courage for you to come
256
00:14:37.649 --> 00:14:38.769
here and make your offer.
257
00:14:39.389 --> 00:14:39.990
Oh, I don't know.
258
00:14:40.889 --> 00:14:42.750
I figured as long as I had those plates on set,
259
00:14:42.789 --> 00:14:44.269
you'd make sure that I wouldn't have any, uh.
260
00:14:45.610 --> 00:14:50.049
Sudden accidents. Now that we understand each other, Captain Zaleski,
261
00:14:51.309 --> 00:14:52.509
what do you say we talk business?
262
00:15:00.679 --> 00:15:04.080
Peters to Harding. Peters to Harding. Harding, go ahead, Peters.
263
00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:07.220
I just got back to my room, Dave. Zaleski's stooge, Etcher,
264
00:15:07.259 --> 00:15:09.139
tailed me. He reads outside in the hall now.
265
00:15:09.159 --> 00:15:12.090
Are you sure he can't hear you, Peters?
266
00:15:12.169 --> 00:15:15.840
I set up the tuning radio in the closet. You
267
00:15:15.879 --> 00:15:18.190
did all right, Dave. I set up a deal to
268
00:15:18.230 --> 00:15:20.509
sell him back the plate one at a time the.
269
00:15:20.429 --> 00:15:24.289
Way you lined it out. All right, Dave. Boy, be careful.
270
00:15:24.330 --> 00:15:26.289
Dave, there might be a shortcut to some of the
271
00:15:26.330 --> 00:15:30.259
evidence to Zaleski's secretary, Ilda Krakow. Huh?
272
00:15:30.279 --> 00:15:32.419
Yes, she was going in the aisle all the time
273
00:15:32.480 --> 00:15:35.799
I was there. Maybe I can make Ilda Krakow really
274
00:15:35.820 --> 00:15:46.659
go for Vince Powell. Okay. Vince Carl asked me to
275
00:15:46.679 --> 00:15:49.220
go out with him tonight, John Celestis. Of course, you
276
00:15:49.259 --> 00:15:49.980
accepted me.
277
00:15:50.320 --> 00:15:53.019
Look, Carl, I'm not telling you how to run your business,
278
00:15:53.080 --> 00:15:54.539
but I don't trust Carl.
279
00:15:54.600 --> 00:15:56.799
How do we know who he is? That's what I
280
00:15:56.870 --> 00:15:59.830
intend to find out, Edger. Who he really is.
281
00:16:00.789 --> 00:16:02.970
If he actually was a member of the Tyler crowd
282
00:16:03.009 --> 00:16:05.210
and did serve time in Mason City, as he says,
283
00:16:05.230 --> 00:16:07.730
then a fingerprint check will prove it.
284
00:16:08.809 --> 00:16:11.190
I can get a routine check through a politician friend.
285
00:16:11.029 --> 00:16:13.840
Of mine in Mason City. The police won't know anything
286
00:16:13.879 --> 00:16:16.860
about it. Oh, I get you, Card. You're going to
287
00:16:16.919 --> 00:16:19.419
use Hilda to get a set of Powell's prints, huh?
288
00:16:20.200 --> 00:16:25.740
Hilda, use the compact trick. Make sure it's open when
289
00:16:25.779 --> 00:16:31.240
you drop it till the powder spills out. For his
290
00:16:31.340 --> 00:16:34.960
own sake, Vince Powell had better be everything he says
291
00:16:35.039 --> 00:16:35.460
he is.
292
00:16:41.700 --> 00:16:52.149
Well, good night, please. Good night, Hilda. Aren't you going
293
00:16:52.190 --> 00:16:53.330
to ask me in for a night, Kat?
294
00:16:54.990 --> 00:16:58.309
Count Gillespie doesn't approve of my entertaining friends in his home.
295
00:16:59.409 --> 00:17:01.019
But I've had a wonderful evening again.
296
00:17:01.100 --> 00:17:03.860
Thanks. I know a better way than that of saying thanks. Hmm?
297
00:17:04.319 --> 00:17:04.420
Yeah.
298
00:17:11.369 --> 00:17:15.859
My compact had slipped right out of my hand. Shows
299
00:17:15.890 --> 00:17:19.319
what a kiss can do sometimes. There's powder spilled all over.
300
00:17:19.339 --> 00:17:21.640
No use crying over spilled powder.
301
00:17:23.079 --> 00:17:25.759
Vince, aren't you going to pick up my compact?
302
00:17:27.720 --> 00:17:28.039
Well?
303
00:17:29.420 --> 00:17:31.200
Sure, I'll clean it off with my handkerchief.
304
00:17:31.680 --> 00:17:34.640
No, no. Never mind, Vince. I'll clean it when I
305
00:17:34.660 --> 00:17:38.119
get inside. Okay. Here. Thanks.
306
00:17:41.569 --> 00:17:46.289
That's supposed to mean bad luck. I hope not, James.
307
00:17:46.890 --> 00:17:49.819
I hope dropping this compact meant only good luck.
308
00:17:50.880 --> 00:18:05.269
For both of us. Now, back to Counterspy.
309
00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:14.099
Crouched in the closet of his room, Harry Peters is
310
00:18:14.119 --> 00:18:16.099
working over a small two-way radio.
311
00:18:17.660 --> 00:18:21.509
Peters to Harding. Peters to Harding. Come in, Dave. Peters
312
00:18:21.549 --> 00:18:21.910
to Harding.
313
00:18:21.950 --> 00:18:24.970
Go ahead, Peters. Dave, I thought I'd never get you
314
00:18:25.009 --> 00:18:26.750
on this two-way. I had some trouble with the condenser.
315
00:18:26.769 --> 00:18:28.430
Been fooling around with it for almost an hour. How
316
00:18:28.869 --> 00:18:32.200
did you do with Zaleski's secretary tonight? He'll have pulled
317
00:18:32.240 --> 00:18:34.859
a fast one on me, Dave. Got my fingerprints by
318
00:18:34.960 --> 00:18:37.599
using the old dropped compact gang. I couldn't avoid it.
319
00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:41.079
And Zaleski's not as sold on Vince Powell as we
320
00:18:41.119 --> 00:18:41.509
thought he was.
321
00:18:42.180 --> 00:18:44.519
I figure you'll probably have somebody in Mason City check
322
00:18:44.599 --> 00:18:45.220
on my prints.
323
00:18:45.940 --> 00:18:48.539
You sit tight, Peters. I'll contact Washington and have a
324
00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:50.990
set of your prints rushed out to the Mason City police.
325
00:18:51.369 --> 00:18:55.210
We'll make it easy for Zaleski. Okay, Dad. Here's hoping
326
00:18:55.230 --> 00:18:56.410
we beat Zaleski to the punch.
327
00:19:11.220 --> 00:19:13.920
John Zaweski, use a sample of a poised on a
328
00:19:13.960 --> 00:19:18.400
traveler's check for the new front flight.
329
00:19:18.759 --> 00:19:22.799
Excellent counterfeiting, ain't ya? Don't want that press stopped until
330
00:19:22.819 --> 00:19:24.720
the run is completed. Then you'll set it up for
331
00:19:24.740 --> 00:19:27.329
the run on backflip. Too bad we haven't got that
332
00:19:27.390 --> 00:19:28.970
backflip right now, John.
333
00:19:29.009 --> 00:19:31.630
We'll have it by tomorrow night when Vince Powell makes
334
00:19:31.670 --> 00:19:32.269
his second.
335
00:19:32.769 --> 00:19:35.250
Ah, and a final delivery.
336
00:19:35.309 --> 00:19:37.529
I should know. Someone's coming down the stairs to the
337
00:19:37.549 --> 00:19:39.930
place right now. Wait, I'll log out through the transparent mirror.
338
00:19:41.180 --> 00:19:43.380
Let's kill them and bolt the door, I tell you.
339
00:19:43.400 --> 00:19:43.539
Right.
340
00:19:41.230 --> 00:19:48.880
It's Hilda, on Boca Doit. Right. Come on, Hilda. I
341
00:19:49.500 --> 00:19:51.579
was going to ask you, but a call just came
342
00:19:51.640 --> 00:19:52.599
in from Mason City.
343
00:19:53.720 --> 00:19:53.920
And?
344
00:19:54.180 --> 00:19:57.519
The fingerprint's checked. Vince Powell's everything he says he is.
345
00:19:57.960 --> 00:20:01.650
Looks to me, it sounds like our girlfriend Hilda's fallen again.
346
00:20:01.670 --> 00:20:04.390
Why, don't be silly. Would be a shame, Hilda, if
347
00:20:04.410 --> 00:20:05.849
you fall in love with Powell.
348
00:20:07.079 --> 00:20:09.309
Would be such a short-lived romance.
349
00:20:10.029 --> 00:20:12.789
What? What do you think?
350
00:20:13.170 --> 00:20:16.849
I'm afraid, Hilda, that Vince Powell will soon join his friend,
351
00:20:16.869 --> 00:20:18.670
Carl Watson.
352
00:20:18.710 --> 00:20:23.200
But Vince hasn't double-crossed you. Did you think I was
353
00:20:23.240 --> 00:20:25.160
really going to pay him for those plates?
354
00:20:26.079 --> 00:20:32.410
My own plates? The man's practically a blackmailer. And I
355
00:20:32.400 --> 00:20:34.150
detest blackmailers.
356
00:20:47.529 --> 00:20:49.359
Vince, I'm so glad I found you in your room.
357
00:20:49.380 --> 00:20:50.460
What's the matter, Gilda?
358
00:20:50.700 --> 00:20:53.380
Take an honest day a minute. Look, don't deliver that
359
00:20:53.440 --> 00:20:55.019
back plate to the count tomorrow night.
360
00:20:55.039 --> 00:20:56.799
But I've got a deal. He's going to kill you.
361
00:20:57.480 --> 00:20:57.740
What?
362
00:20:58.000 --> 00:21:00.259
Just as soon as you turn that back plate over
363
00:21:00.299 --> 00:21:01.809
to him, he's going to have Etcher kill you.
364
00:21:02.369 --> 00:21:05.750
Vince, I don't want that to happen to you. You don't?
365
00:21:07.009 --> 00:21:11.089
You don't believe me. Should I? Vince, I don't want
366
00:21:11.109 --> 00:21:11.670
to help you.
367
00:21:12.069 --> 00:21:12.269
Why?
368
00:21:13.640 --> 00:21:19.450
Because you're nice, and I liked you very much when
369
00:21:19.490 --> 00:21:23.809
you kissed me the other night. You know something? I'm
370
00:21:23.829 --> 00:21:28.799
beginning to believe you. Thanks for the tip, Hilda. Well,
371
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:33.960
I've got to get back now. Maybe I'll hear from
372
00:21:33.980 --> 00:21:34.740
you sometime, Vince.
373
00:21:39.240 --> 00:21:39.880
Goodbye.
374
00:21:40.200 --> 00:21:43.619
That's it. You move, Paul, and the gun goes off. Linda,
375
00:21:43.740 --> 00:21:46.200
I didn't know he followed me here. Believe me. It's okay, Hilda.
376
00:21:46.640 --> 00:21:49.059
Thanks for the try, anyway. Hilda, I told the count
377
00:21:49.079 --> 00:21:51.500
it seemed like you couldn't be trusted. I heard the
378
00:21:51.539 --> 00:21:54.160
talk you two had in the air. Come on, both
379
00:21:54.180 --> 00:21:57.269
of you. Count Zalewski's waiting for you downstairs in the car.
380
00:21:57.289 --> 00:21:58.670
It's kind of cold out there, too. Do you mind
381
00:21:58.690 --> 00:21:59.730
if I get my coat out of the car? I'm
382
00:21:59.750 --> 00:22:00.630
trying tricks.
383
00:22:00.710 --> 00:22:05.349
Don't worry. I know better. Come on, come on. Make
384
00:22:05.410 --> 00:22:05.849
it snappy.
385
00:22:05.950 --> 00:22:07.869
Right with you. I'm just looking for my best coat.
386
00:22:08.789 --> 00:22:10.450
After all, I want to look stylish when I go
387
00:22:10.519 --> 00:22:11.599
riding with Count Zaleski.
388
00:22:11.680 --> 00:22:13.720
I said snap it up. Here it is.
389
00:22:16.900 --> 00:22:19.920
Nice looking coat, huh? Get it on fast, pal. A
390
00:22:19.960 --> 00:22:21.710
cop don't like to be kept waiting.
391
00:22:21.849 --> 00:22:34.589
Yeah. Enter, there's a turn off the main highway up ahead.
392
00:22:34.839 --> 00:22:39.200
Take it. We're flushing, consular. Hilda brought here with me.
393
00:22:39.220 --> 00:22:42.279
She's got the shakes, cons. Hilda recalls what happened to
394
00:22:42.339 --> 00:22:46.279
Carl Walton, don't you? Consular, please don't do that to me.
395
00:22:46.700 --> 00:22:49.519
You don't have to worry about being thrown from the car, Hilda.
396
00:22:50.920 --> 00:22:53.450
I've got something special planned for you when we get.
397
00:22:53.369 --> 00:22:54.210
Through with Powell.
398
00:22:54.670 --> 00:22:56.730
You know, Count, I thought you were a smart operator.
399
00:22:57.190 --> 00:22:59.789
Why should you doubt it now, Powell? Because getting rid
400
00:22:59.849 --> 00:23:01.230
of me isn't going to get you what you want.
401
00:23:02.250 --> 00:23:13.059
Here's a time-off, cop. Uh-huh. Uh, you were saying, Powell?
402
00:23:13.640 --> 00:23:17.569
Oh, yes, about my lack of judgment and disposing of
403
00:23:17.609 --> 00:23:18.069
you now.
404
00:23:18.109 --> 00:23:20.529
You need that back plate to finish printing the traveler's check.
405
00:23:20.549 --> 00:23:21.549
You'll never get it this way.
406
00:23:22.410 --> 00:23:25.819
I realize that. Well, I'm forced to attend to first
407
00:23:25.900 --> 00:23:28.220
things first. It'll take Etcher a long time to make
408
00:23:28.259 --> 00:23:30.220
a new plate. You can save all that time.
409
00:23:30.240 --> 00:23:34.279
Sorry, pal. No more deals. Be good enough to open
410
00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:36.109
that door. Look, Count, don't be a sucker.
411
00:23:36.200 --> 00:23:38.619
Open the door, pal, unless you prefer that I fire
412
00:23:38.730 --> 00:23:39.829
this gun at you.
413
00:23:41.130 --> 00:23:43.250
Police car. I can see the headlights in the rear
414
00:23:43.269 --> 00:23:54.029
view mirror. Step on it, Etcher. They're gated on us. Faster, faster.
415
00:23:54.130 --> 00:23:56.430
I can't get any more out of it, cop. They'll
416
00:23:56.450 --> 00:23:58.549
be up to us in a minute. All right, slow down.
417
00:23:58.569 --> 00:24:01.309
Don't stop. Let them come. Are you crazy? Don't stop,
418
00:24:01.410 --> 00:24:03.589
I said. All they can do is give us a
419
00:24:03.609 --> 00:24:06.269
ticket for speeding. Brother, are you in for a surprise?
420
00:24:08.549 --> 00:24:10.490
Oh, Hilda, I love you so much as to open
421
00:24:10.509 --> 00:24:14.130
your mouth.
422
00:24:15.329 --> 00:24:17.650
I shoot. Remember your tune, not a word.
423
00:24:17.710 --> 00:24:19.990
Brayden, you and Carpenter come to the other side of
424
00:24:20.009 --> 00:24:20.829
the car. All right.
425
00:24:22.420 --> 00:24:25.079
All right, everybody out. What's the meaning of this?
426
00:24:25.099 --> 00:24:28.660
We're under arrest by the United States government. Keep them covered, Braden.
427
00:24:28.680 --> 00:24:29.240
Got it, Mr.
428
00:24:29.259 --> 00:24:29.539
Harding.
429
00:24:29.640 --> 00:24:29.859
Harding?
430
00:24:29.880 --> 00:24:32.200
Do you know what I meant, Count Zaleski? I had
431
00:24:32.220 --> 00:24:34.069
a couple of bad minutes back there, Mr. Harding, before
432
00:24:34.089 --> 00:24:36.190
I heard the patrol car siren. Sorry we took so long, Peter.
433
00:24:36.210 --> 00:24:38.089
We wanted to avoid shooting on the main highway.
434
00:24:38.250 --> 00:24:38.789
What is this?
435
00:24:39.309 --> 00:24:42.329
This, Zaleski, is my assistant, Counter-Spy Agent Harry Peters. And
436
00:24:42.390 --> 00:24:44.549
it's also the wind-up for you and your gang, Zaleski.
437
00:24:45.619 --> 00:24:47.299
By the way, Etcher, thanks for giving me the chance
438
00:24:47.319 --> 00:24:49.019
to get my coat out of that closet. When I
439
00:24:49.019 --> 00:24:50.859
went in there, I switched on a radio transmitter and
440
00:24:50.880 --> 00:24:52.299
my conversation with you tipped off Mr.
441
00:24:52.420 --> 00:24:53.559
Harding as to what was going on.
442
00:24:53.579 --> 00:24:56.400
Chief, I want to talk to you about Hilda Krakow,
443
00:24:56.420 --> 00:24:57.980
about putting in a clemency plea for her when they
444
00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:58.539
come to trial.
445
00:24:59.220 --> 00:25:01.569
Brayden, you and Carpenter take care of this bunch. Will do, Mr.
446
00:25:01.619 --> 00:25:01.920
Harding.
447
00:25:02.240 --> 00:25:02.740
Come on, Peter.
448
00:25:03.160 --> 00:25:05.740
We'll talk about that clemency plea on the way back
449
00:25:05.769 --> 00:25:06.140
to town.
450
00:25:20.519 --> 00:25:23.619
Tune in every Tuesday and Thursday, same time, same station,
451
00:25:23.640 --> 00:25:27.660
to Counterspy. Listen on Thursday for the exciting case of
452
00:25:27.700 --> 00:25:30.740
the rats of relief. An empty truck and a dead
453
00:25:30.799 --> 00:25:33.380
man lay at the bottom of the river as rats
454
00:25:33.440 --> 00:25:36.680
of relief gnawed at the goodwill between America and Europe.
455
00:25:37.400 --> 00:25:40.210
To smash the racket, a Counterspy took his life in
456
00:25:40.250 --> 00:25:43.720
his hands to save another life. Be tuned in on
457
00:25:43.759 --> 00:25:48.519
Thursday to Case of the Rats of Relief on Counterspy.
458
00:26:01.069 --> 00:26:03.990
Tonight's Counterspy program originated in New York and was directed
459
00:26:04.009 --> 00:26:04.539
by Leonard L.
460
00:26:04.569 --> 00:26:04.930
Bass.
461
00:26:05.190 --> 00:26:08.589
Dramatized by Edward Adamson, featured Don McLaughlin and Mandel Kramer,
462
00:26:08.609 --> 00:26:10.009
with music by Jesse Crawford.
463
00:26:11.529 --> 00:26:15.549
Counterspy is a Phillips H. Lord production for Pepsi-Cola. Enjoy
464
00:26:15.569 --> 00:26:17.170
some delicious Pepsi tonight.
465
00:26:17.849 --> 00:26:22.039
Welcome back.
466
00:26:41.710 --> 00:26:45.400
As I said before the episode, the quality is not great,
467
00:26:45.640 --> 00:26:51.460
but I did catch Ralph Bell in this episode as Etcher. Overall,
468
00:26:51.519 --> 00:26:57.240
I thought the Count was quite ruthless and intimidating, which
469
00:26:57.579 --> 00:27:05.099
certainly can be a one of those criminals who seemed
470
00:27:05.299 --> 00:27:10.299
destined to get caught because he left a trail of bodies.
471
00:27:10.660 --> 00:27:14.220
And really, the only way that he got caught here
472
00:27:14.619 --> 00:27:20.369
was because on that second murder, he didn't verify that
473
00:27:20.930 --> 00:27:24.890
he had been given the correct location of the plates.
474
00:27:25.369 --> 00:27:28.910
before he killed off his henchmen. And the murder of
475
00:27:29.109 --> 00:27:32.430
Peter seemed to be based more on a, it's the
476
00:27:32.529 --> 00:27:36.730
principle of the matter. I don't want to be seen
477
00:27:36.829 --> 00:27:41.410
as playing blackmail, even if it means that I am
478
00:27:41.990 --> 00:27:45.779
forfeiting a plate and all the works that Etcher went
479
00:27:45.859 --> 00:27:49.599
in to make it. Listener comments and feedback. And we go,
480
00:27:49.980 --> 00:27:53.829
first of all, to Patreon regarding the case of the
481
00:27:54.430 --> 00:27:58.650
high-class hijacker. David Harding grows on me all the time
482
00:27:58.710 --> 00:28:02.019
as a leader. He is very smart, creative, and would
483
00:28:02.039 --> 00:28:05.619
be a great boss to work for. Definitely agreed. He
484
00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:09.170
does show a lot of creativity, but he also does
485
00:28:09.230 --> 00:28:13.769
care about keeping his people safe. A random Spotify user writes,
486
00:28:14.089 --> 00:28:17.390
Central City. Maybe this is the same place where Mr.
487
00:28:17.430 --> 00:28:21.619
Chameleon is from. He worked at Central Police Headquarters, and
488
00:28:21.660 --> 00:28:25.579
he was the most famous and dreaded detective. Heck, maybe
489
00:28:25.660 --> 00:28:29.480
David Harding was working alongside him and didn't even know
490
00:28:30.359 --> 00:28:34.670
it because of the disguise. trying to remember whether they
491
00:28:34.769 --> 00:28:39.710
specifically said this in Mr. Chameleon, but I always took
492
00:28:39.769 --> 00:28:45.210
the series as being based in New York and the
493
00:28:45.529 --> 00:28:52.720
central police headquarters was the particular place where he worked
494
00:28:53.000 --> 00:28:59.500
and not a separate city. Personally, when I heard Central City,
495
00:28:59.519 --> 00:29:03.740
I thought of one of my favorite superheroes of all time,
496
00:29:03.769 --> 00:29:06.609
who I've loved since I was nine and saw the
497
00:29:06.670 --> 00:29:14.369
John Wesley ship live-action version in 1990, The Flash. Of course,
498
00:29:14.710 --> 00:29:18.750
Central City was not actually the home of the original Flash,
499
00:29:18.829 --> 00:29:23.829
who had been published in comics at this point, Jay Garrick,
500
00:29:23.910 --> 00:29:27.799
who was located in New York City at the time.
501
00:29:28.279 --> 00:29:33.849
One thing you find reading and listening to old Golden
502
00:29:33.940 --> 00:29:37.910
Age fiction is that Central City was just one of
503
00:29:37.970 --> 00:29:42.900
those common names. Go City was to an extent, but
504
00:29:43.859 --> 00:29:51.109
much like Gotham, Central City became so associated with the superhero,
505
00:29:51.250 --> 00:29:54.809
you wouldn't really, as a writer, associate it with some
506
00:29:54.890 --> 00:29:59.480
other character nowadays. but there were plenty of generic central
507
00:29:59.519 --> 00:30:00.539
cities back.
508
00:30:00.339 --> 00:30:00.880
In the day.
509
00:30:01.200 --> 00:30:06.660
Then, Peter writes regarding the episode The Society Swindler, Counterspy
510
00:30:06.700 --> 00:30:10.089
hasn't exactly been my favorite series to listen to, but
511
00:30:10.130 --> 00:30:13.069
this episode was fantastic from start to finish. It was
512
00:30:13.109 --> 00:30:17.170
a good story with memorable villains and had a satisfying ending.
513
00:30:17.289 --> 00:30:18.579
Well, thanks so much, Peter.
514
00:30:19.539 --> 00:30:22.980
And then we had another comment regarding the episode on
515
00:30:23.039 --> 00:30:28.160
YouTube and casting. Saisoff writes another casting note. If that
516
00:30:28.200 --> 00:30:31.599
wasn't Raymond Edward Johnson in the role of Babson, I'll
517
00:30:31.640 --> 00:30:34.640
eat my hat. I mean, several months ago, I suspected
518
00:30:34.660 --> 00:30:36.680
that I heard him in a minor role as a doctor,
519
00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:39.250
but this time I'm sure of it. Now, if only
520
00:30:39.349 --> 00:30:41.569
Mary could have been with him to sell us some
521
00:30:41.630 --> 00:30:45.349
Lipton tea, the setup would have been complete. Well, thanks
522
00:30:45.390 --> 00:30:48.660
so much, Sesov, and I'll take your word on it.
523
00:30:49.220 --> 00:30:51.400
I've not gotten to the point where I can just
524
00:30:51.619 --> 00:30:56.509
easily clock Raymond Edward Johnson's voice. So I can't say
525
00:30:56.509 --> 00:31:01.150
100% for sure whether you're right or wrong. But regardless,
526
00:31:01.490 --> 00:31:05.049
your hat is safe. Thanks so much. And once again,
527
00:31:05.109 --> 00:31:07.650
thanks for the comment. Now it's time to thank our
528
00:31:07.710 --> 00:31:11.609
Patreon supporter of the day. Thank you to James, Patreon
529

11
00:00:46.619 --> 00:00:52.479
to patreon.greatdetectives.net. I do want to go ahead and warn
12
00:00:52.600 --> 00:00:58.100
that the audio quality on today's episode is listenable, but
13
00:00:58.280 --> 00:01:01.810
not at the level that we've come to expect of
14
00:01:01.890 --> 00:01:08.769
Counterspy over the last few months. But now, from February 13th, 1950,
15
00:01:08.769 --> 00:01:11.930
here is Counterfeit Traveler's Checks.
16
00:01:14.109 --> 00:01:15.489
And now to Counterspy.
17
00:01:22.689 --> 00:01:28.799
Well, I got.
18
00:01:28.540 --> 00:01:30.659
An order for you. Just the right kind of an
19
00:01:30.680 --> 00:01:31.739
eye for it. A car?
20
00:01:32.060 --> 00:01:35.540
Look, I'll wait for you in the car. You handle
21
00:01:35.560 --> 00:01:37.519
Steve Morris alone. There's nobody else here on the wall.
22
00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:41.010
Nothing's doing, pal. Officer Lusky said you're in on this
23
00:01:41.049 --> 00:01:44.189
with me and your study. Hey, it's coming out of
24
00:01:44.250 --> 00:01:53.140
the dark now. Got the bottle? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I
25
00:01:53.159 --> 00:01:57.439
got your message to meet you. What's up? No more, Steve.
26
00:01:57.480 --> 00:01:57.640
What?
27
00:01:58.959 --> 00:02:02.120
What's the idea of the gun? Steve, Count Zaleski don't
28
00:02:02.159 --> 00:02:05.909
like competition. Competition? Especially for one of his own passes.
29
00:02:06.120 --> 00:02:07.750
I don't know what you're talking about, that's it.
30
00:02:07.849 --> 00:02:10.270
I can't find out about your setting up shop for
31
00:02:10.310 --> 00:02:13.229
yourself on 12th Street to cut phony traveler's checks.
32
00:02:13.270 --> 00:02:14.870
Lou, get your... I can explain.
33
00:02:14.909 --> 00:02:17.849
That's why Carl's got that bottle of engraving acid in
34
00:02:17.909 --> 00:02:18.389
his hand.
35
00:02:19.389 --> 00:02:21.669
Hitcher, the count's orders is to get rid of you
36
00:02:21.689 --> 00:02:24.150
the best way. Hitcher, don't. Yes, it is the best
37
00:02:24.189 --> 00:02:33.180
way I know of. Okay, go ahead. Give it to him.
38
00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:39.379
All counter-spy field officers, stand by. This is headquarters Washington.
39
00:02:39.740 --> 00:02:46.069
A special message from Mr. David Harding. This is David Harding.
40
00:02:46.509 --> 00:02:49.240
One of the cleverest counterfeiting rings in criminal history is
41
00:02:49.300 --> 00:02:50.759
now operating.
42
00:02:50.300 --> 00:02:51.219
In high gear.
43
00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:55.680
This gang specializes in passing fake traveler checks and has
44
00:02:55.699 --> 00:02:58.340
to date cashed over a half a million dollars worth
45
00:02:58.479 --> 00:03:02.729
in 37 states. All counters by field officers will immediately
46
00:03:02.770 --> 00:03:06.969
contact local police authorities and set up cooperation plan R3.
47
00:03:07.729 --> 00:03:21.659
Reports will be radioed daily to this headquarters. Hello? Hilda?
48
00:03:22.330 --> 00:03:27.409
This is Carl. Okay to talk? Yes, yes, Carl. What
49
00:03:27.449 --> 00:03:28.250
about Count Zaleski?
50
00:03:28.629 --> 00:03:30.449
He's down in the basement of the house with Etcher.
51
00:03:30.469 --> 00:03:32.590
They're in the print shop. Carl, I've been waiting for
52
00:03:32.610 --> 00:03:34.870
your call for hours. I was afraid you'd run out
53
00:03:34.930 --> 00:03:36.780
on me. What, me run out on you, Hilda?
54
00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:39.280
Listen, you and I are going to cash in on
55
00:03:39.319 --> 00:03:42.599
those printing plates together, just like I promised. Do you
56
00:03:42.639 --> 00:03:46.240
have the plates with you, Carl? I got them where
57
00:03:46.259 --> 00:03:49.590
they're nice and safe. How did John take it when
58
00:03:49.629 --> 00:03:52.909
he found the plates were gone? Thought he could get
59
00:03:52.949 --> 00:03:56.729
away with throwing me crumbs. I showed him, didn't I, baby? Uh, Carl,
60
00:03:56.909 --> 00:04:00.090
when do I meet you and where? I'm up in
61
00:04:00.569 --> 00:04:01.409
White Plains, Hilda.
62
00:04:01.430 --> 00:04:05.930
Remember that spot outside town where we parked on our
63
00:04:05.949 --> 00:04:06.449
first date?
64
00:04:06.629 --> 00:04:10.509
Uh-huh. I'll be waiting for you there. I'll start right away, Carl.
65
00:04:10.930 --> 00:04:13.550
From here on, honey, it's just you and me and
66
00:04:13.590 --> 00:04:21.199
a nice fat million bucks thanks to the Miley Hilda?
67
00:04:22.459 --> 00:04:25.920
It's all range, Count Zaleski. He's waiting for me up
68
00:04:25.939 --> 00:04:29.560
at White Plains. And the plates? He says he has
69
00:04:29.579 --> 00:04:35.079
them in a safe place. Hilda performed excellently. Don't you think, Hector? Sure.
70
00:04:35.100 --> 00:04:38.500
As a regular captain, I have fun. Count, I feel
71
00:04:38.519 --> 00:04:44.709
like such a... Well, Carl isn't a bad choice. What's
72
00:04:44.730 --> 00:04:46.050
the idea of slapping me?
73
00:04:46.129 --> 00:04:48.589
To remind you, my dear Hilda, just what a bad
74
00:04:48.629 --> 00:04:50.040
sort Kong is.
75
00:04:50.060 --> 00:04:55.180
Low despicable feet. Slimy double courses. Makes one lose faith
76
00:04:55.240 --> 00:04:56.000
in human nature.
77
00:04:56.040 --> 00:04:58.240
Three months of my best and clever work went into
78
00:04:58.279 --> 00:05:00.100
those plates for the new Travers checks.
79
00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:01.339
Real masterpiece.
80
00:05:01.379 --> 00:05:04.490
And even more important than Etcher's professional pride is the
81
00:05:04.529 --> 00:05:08.449
tremendous financial setback. My passers throughout the country are awaiting
82
00:05:08.490 --> 00:05:11.089
the shipment of new checks. In the meantime, my press
83
00:05:11.110 --> 00:05:16.300
in the basement stands idle. Million-dollar business. Hilda stands still.
84
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:19.040
And you have the temerity to say Carl is not
85
00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:22.910
a bad sort. Really, Hilda, I'm ashamed of you.
86
00:05:24.269 --> 00:05:27.930
As you bring the car around, you'll go keep Hilda's
87
00:05:28.009 --> 00:05:30.870
date with Carl. Yeah.
88
00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:43.029
Carl, any untoward move and I'll fire this automatic without hesitation.
89
00:05:43.170 --> 00:05:46.189
Now, honest, Con, Celestia, you got it all wrong.
90
00:05:46.209 --> 00:05:49.730
That's a knife right beside Hilda when you spoke to
91
00:05:49.750 --> 00:05:50.569
her on the phone.
92
00:05:50.589 --> 00:05:53.430
She's a liar. She probably took the plates herself. You
93
00:05:53.889 --> 00:05:57.459
can't trust a dame like Hilda in the police. Yeah, yeah, Con. Well,
94
00:05:57.480 --> 00:05:58.779
if Con wants to hear out of you as a
95
00:05:58.819 --> 00:06:01.420
place where you had the plates hidden. Con, I wouldn't
96
00:06:01.459 --> 00:06:04.040
try to pull a fast one on you. Side road, Con.
97
00:06:05.610 --> 00:06:08.329
Carl, I'm going to let Etcher have a session with you.
98
00:06:08.709 --> 00:06:11.920
But I told you... Perhaps recall the session with Steve
99
00:06:12.009 --> 00:06:13.300
Morris last month.
100
00:06:13.860 --> 00:06:16.800
I brought an extra large bottle of engraving ass for me.
101
00:06:17.500 --> 00:06:21.040
Etcher, I'm sure Carl vividly recalls there was hardly enough
102
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:22.500
left of Steve Morris.
103
00:06:22.180 --> 00:06:25.920
To make a decent burial. Count, if I tell you
104
00:06:25.939 --> 00:06:28.439
where the plates are, will you give me a break?
105
00:06:29.819 --> 00:06:32.000
Where are they? I promise you, Count, you won't let
106
00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:36.410
Etcher do that to me. I promise. I won't permit
107
00:06:36.569 --> 00:06:42.389
Etcher to touch you. Where are the plates? Yeah. In
108
00:06:42.439 --> 00:06:46.620
a locker in Grand Central Station. The key to the locker?
109
00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:49.180
Right here in my coat. Come on. I'll reach in
110
00:06:49.240 --> 00:06:55.360
and get it. I have it, Etcher. Now everything's okay.
111
00:06:56.019 --> 00:06:58.329
Now you get the plates back. You'll let me go?
112
00:06:58.829 --> 00:07:03.939
Of course, Carlton. Open the door. Huh? You heard the cop.
113
00:07:04.379 --> 00:07:06.660
Open the door to the cop. You're going to jump.
114
00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:06.730
Out, cop.
115
00:07:06.779 --> 00:07:09.339
No, but, cop, you promised you'd give me a break.
116
00:07:09.660 --> 00:07:16.170
This is it. We're only doing 40 miles an hour. Now, cop. Now, cop, please. No, please.
117
00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:22.110
Get out. Cop, what if the cop didn't finish him off?
118
00:07:22.990 --> 00:07:24.009
Pull up and turn back.
119
00:07:24.069 --> 00:07:24.389
That's it.
120
00:07:30.459 --> 00:07:32.779
Well, if he's alive and someone picks him up, he'll talk.
121
00:07:32.860 --> 00:07:35.759
You should have let me give him the acid treatment.
122
00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:38.430
We're doing this the way I planned.
123
00:07:38.970 --> 00:07:44.290
Okay, cop. You're the boss. Hey, look up ahead, cop. Man,
124
00:07:44.970 --> 00:07:47.370
trying to crawl up the road. Took a smart fall.
125
00:07:48.189 --> 00:07:53.500
Hey, he's just coming. Step on it. More speed. He's
126
00:07:53.540 --> 00:07:56.860
crawling faster. More speed. More speed.
127
00:07:58.810 --> 00:07:59.350
Now, that's it.
128
00:07:59.370 --> 00:08:11.439
Get him. Stop! Hello, Hilda. Quick, let me talk to
129
00:08:11.449 --> 00:08:12.079
the count.
130
00:08:12.100 --> 00:08:12.459
Yes, Dr.
131
00:08:12.500 --> 00:08:12.720
Miller.
132
00:08:13.399 --> 00:08:17.139
Count Valesky, that's her. What's the matter with you, that's her?
133
00:08:17.220 --> 00:08:18.680
I told you to come right back here to the
134
00:08:18.740 --> 00:08:21.319
house after you picked up the plates at Grand Central.
135
00:08:21.339 --> 00:08:23.959
Carl pulled a fast one on us. The plates aren't there.
136
00:08:24.040 --> 00:08:34.830
Carl's locker was empty. Harding, Washington, calling Peters at Baltimore
137
00:08:34.850 --> 00:08:35.350
Field Office.
138
00:08:35.409 --> 00:08:38.620
Peters, Baltimore Field Office.
139
00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:39.519
Go ahead, Chief.
140
00:08:40.039 --> 00:08:41.940
I'm leaving my office now to get the 5 o'clock
141
00:08:41.980 --> 00:08:44.460
train for New York. You board the train at Baltimore
142
00:08:44.480 --> 00:08:47.279
and meet me car 4, compartment C.
143
00:08:47.639 --> 00:08:48.500
What's up, Mr. Harding?
144
00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.529
With a surprise break in the traveler check fraud, Peters,
145
00:08:51.730 --> 00:08:53.309
I'll fill you in on the details on the way
146
00:08:53.330 --> 00:09:07.639
to New York. Peter, the counterfeit engraving plates are now
147
00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:08.220
in our New.
148
00:09:08.139 --> 00:09:10.139
York field office. How'd we get them, Ted?
149
00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:14.179
Right before last, a man named Carl Walton was found
150
00:09:14.200 --> 00:09:17.470
dead on a dirt road north of White Plains, New York. Apparently,
151
00:09:17.490 --> 00:09:21.070
the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Apparently, while our agents
152
00:09:21.110 --> 00:09:23.250
went over the scene of the accident, they found evidence
153
00:09:23.289 --> 00:09:26.230
that Walton had tried to crawl off the road before
154
00:09:26.269 --> 00:09:26.970
the car hit him.
155
00:09:27.610 --> 00:09:28.889
Why are interests in Walton, Ted?
156
00:09:28.909 --> 00:09:32.789
Two previous convictions as a passer of counterfeit money. So
157
00:09:32.860 --> 00:09:34.679
Brayden from the New York office went to the rooming
158
00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:37.399
house where this Walton had lived. The landlady turned a
159
00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:39.720
package over to Brayden that Walton had left with her
160
00:09:39.779 --> 00:09:40.580
for safekeeping.
161
00:09:40.779 --> 00:09:43.299
And the package contained the traveler check plates. Right, Peter.
162
00:09:44.279 --> 00:09:47.039
The landlady was also helpful in another way. There's a
163
00:09:47.100 --> 00:09:48.799
coin phone in the rooming house.
164
00:09:48.899 --> 00:09:51.190
And she recalled that Walton spoke on the phone many
165
00:09:51.250 --> 00:09:54.269
times to someone he called Count Zaleski.
166
00:09:54.629 --> 00:09:55.289
Count Zaleski?
167
00:09:55.850 --> 00:09:58.909
Our old friend the International Swindler. According to our periodic
168
00:09:58.929 --> 00:09:59.710
surveillance reports.
169
00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:02.519
He arrived back here in the States from Argentina six
170
00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:05.100
months ago. He rented a brownstone house on East 86th
171
00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:07.580
Street in New York City. An operation like the phony
172
00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.799
traveler's check syndicate would be right up his alley, Dad.
173
00:10:10.659 --> 00:10:13.019
Looks like Zaleski's our boy, all right. Well, we can
174
00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:15.320
pick him up for questioning, but when we take him in,
175
00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:17.299
I want to make sure that we have all.
176
00:10:17.139 --> 00:10:21.350
The evidence we need. Oh, by the way, Peter, remember
177
00:10:21.389 --> 00:10:22.710
my friend Mickey Alvin?
178
00:10:23.389 --> 00:10:25.860
The Colby City bootlack who sends his savings to the
179
00:10:25.899 --> 00:10:26.980
Counterspy Fund?
180
00:10:27.460 --> 00:10:29.940
You said you hoped to meet him sometime. Well, here's
181
00:10:29.980 --> 00:10:31.539
his latest letter. Oh, let's see.
182
00:10:33.279 --> 00:10:33.779
Dear Mr.
183
00:10:33.820 --> 00:10:37.320
David Harding, I'm very glad you put my money in
184
00:10:37.340 --> 00:10:40.059
the fund. It makes me feel like I am part
185
00:10:40.100 --> 00:10:41.620
of your wonderful bunch of fellows.
186
00:10:42.529 --> 00:10:43.269
Even if it's only $ 2.
187
00:10:43.169 --> 00:10:43.230
62.
188
00:10:43.210 --> 00:10:48.450
Quite a boy, huh? Last week, I had a very
189
00:10:48.490 --> 00:10:49.149
good week, Mr.
190
00:10:49.210 --> 00:10:52.370
Harding, because there was a big convention in Colby City,
191
00:10:52.409 --> 00:10:56.340
and I picked up a lot extra in tips. I
192
00:10:56.360 --> 00:10:58.200
figured that if I take a bus and back, I
193
00:10:58.220 --> 00:11:01.600
could take a trip to Washington pretty soon. I know
194
00:11:01.620 --> 00:11:04.019
this is asking pretty much, but could I at least
195
00:11:04.139 --> 00:11:06.460
walk through the counter-spy main building?
196
00:11:08.460 --> 00:11:10.919
I wouldn't bother anybody. I'd just like to walk through.
197
00:11:10.940 --> 00:11:13.820
And if I knew I could do that, I would
198
00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:16.950
work extra hard and save every cent. I hope this
199
00:11:17.009 --> 00:11:18.529
is not asking too much, Mr. Hunting.
200
00:11:18.549 --> 00:11:20.789
I'm surely Nicky Allen.
201
00:11:21.350 --> 00:11:23.230
Well, I wrote him, Peter, that he can not only
202
00:11:23.269 --> 00:11:24.950
walk through the building, but he can come and have
203
00:11:25.009 --> 00:11:27.789
lunch or dinner with us, whichever he likes. Oughtn't you
204
00:11:27.830 --> 00:11:29.830
to send him the money, Dave? Well, the way I
205
00:11:29.850 --> 00:11:31.629
think of that boy, he likes to make his own way.
206
00:11:31.720 --> 00:11:33.200
Let him earn the trip, and then I'll give him
207
00:11:33.240 --> 00:11:35.080
the money when he starts back for Colby City.
208
00:11:35.129 --> 00:11:41.399
Good hunch, Dave. Um, what's your plan now about Count Zaleski? Oh, yes,
209
00:11:41.419 --> 00:11:45.500
I didn't tell you, did I? Uh-oh. Here I go again.
210
00:11:45.519 --> 00:11:45.840
That's right.
211
00:11:46.840 --> 00:11:49.059
Only this time, when you go undercover, Peter, it's going
212
00:11:49.100 --> 00:12:03.769
to be much more risky than usual.
213
00:12:04.289 --> 00:12:06.470
Well, now, I told you to stay away from that window.
214
00:12:07.090 --> 00:12:09.009
But, Count Gillespie, I just wanted to see if that
215
00:12:09.070 --> 00:12:11.240
man was still watching his house from across the street.
216
00:12:11.250 --> 00:12:15.679
Of course he is. He may be from the police. Well,
217
00:12:15.700 --> 00:12:20.159
we'll soon find out. Hatcher. Yeah, Tom Selesky?
218
00:12:20.820 --> 00:12:27.789
Come on upstairs. I got a more important job for
219
00:12:27.809 --> 00:12:31.830
you at the moment. And, uh, Hatcher, bring your gun
220
00:12:31.870 --> 00:12:32.309
with you.
221
00:12:32.330 --> 00:12:43.720
Hey, okay, you don't have to shove it.
222
00:12:49.240 --> 00:12:51.960
Why were you standing across the street watching this house?
223
00:12:52.750 --> 00:12:53.179
Oh, me?
224
00:12:54.789 --> 00:12:57.970
You answer a question with an answer, not a question.
225
00:12:58.450 --> 00:13:00.250
You wouldn't be so free with that midi-ear that you
226
00:13:00.289 --> 00:13:01.509
didn't have a rod on the other one.
227
00:13:01.769 --> 00:13:04.269
Consuleski, he doesn't sound as if he's from the police.
228
00:13:04.289 --> 00:13:07.620
Keep out of this, is he? Well, are you prepared
229
00:13:07.659 --> 00:13:09.200
to answer my question now?
230
00:13:09.220 --> 00:13:12.820
I'm standing over there waiting for an invitation to come in.
231
00:13:12.840 --> 00:13:17.100
Who are you? You mean in New York? That's, uh...
232
00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:17.960
All right, all right.
233
00:13:19.110 --> 00:13:22.509
Don't take me long to catch on. My name's Vince Powell.
234
00:13:23.070 --> 00:13:24.629
I used to be tied up at the Tyler crowd
235
00:13:24.669 --> 00:13:27.600
in Mason City. I got out of the jug there
236
00:13:27.620 --> 00:13:28.899
a couple of months ago and I come east to
237
00:13:28.940 --> 00:13:31.820
look up an old friend of mine. What friend, Powell?
238
00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:32.960
Carl Walton.
239
00:13:34.740 --> 00:13:37.679
Too bad about what happened to Carl, eh, Chancellor? I
240
00:13:38.779 --> 00:13:42.610
don't know any Carl Walton. Now look, Cal, if you
241
00:13:42.629 --> 00:13:44.289
and me are going to do any business, let's talk
242
00:13:44.309 --> 00:13:45.000
him the up and up, hmm?
243
00:13:46.110 --> 00:13:49.190
Carl was working for you before he had that accident.
244
00:13:50.190 --> 00:13:54.440
This guy's twice. How about that, Jack? Carl, you said
245
00:13:54.460 --> 00:13:58.399
something about our doing business. Carl left something for me
246
00:13:58.440 --> 00:14:00.600
to hold for him. The plates.
247
00:14:01.759 --> 00:14:03.940
Count, your boy here is a real genius, ain't he?
248
00:14:04.039 --> 00:14:07.960
About that business, Carl. Well, putting counterfeit ain't in my line.
249
00:14:07.980 --> 00:14:11.019
So I figured I'd put those plates on the market.
250
00:14:12.389 --> 00:14:14.169
I also figured that I ought to give you first
251
00:14:14.190 --> 00:14:20.820
chance to buy them. Where are the plates now? You
252
00:14:20.840 --> 00:14:24.860
know something, Cap? I think I got a temporary loss
253
00:14:24.919 --> 00:14:32.919
of memory. And you know something, Power? I admire you.
254
00:14:33.340 --> 00:14:33.740
Sure.
255
00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:37.590
I'm a grand guide. The courage for you to come
256
00:14:37.649 --> 00:14:38.769
here and make your offer.
257
00:14:39.389 --> 00:14:39.990
Oh, I don't know.
258
00:14:40.889 --> 00:14:42.750
I figured as long as I had those plates on set,
259
00:14:42.789 --> 00:14:44.269
you'd make sure that I wouldn't have any, uh.
260
00:14:45.610 --> 00:14:50.049
Sudden accidents. Now that we understand each other, Captain Zaleski,
261
00:14:51.309 --> 00:14:52.509
what do you say we talk business?
262
00:15:00.679 --> 00:15:04.080
Peters to Harding. Peters to Harding. Harding, go ahead, Peters.
263
00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:07.220
I just got back to my room, Dave. Zaleski's stooge, Etcher,
264
00:15:07.259 --> 00:15:09.139
tailed me. He reads outside in the hall now.
265
00:15:09.159 --> 00:15:12.090
Are you sure he can't hear you, Peters?
266
00:15:12.169 --> 00:15:15.840
I set up the tuning radio in the closet. You
267
00:15:15.879 --> 00:15:18.190
did all right, Dave. I set up a deal to
268
00:15:18.230 --> 00:15:20.509
sell him back the plate one at a time the.
269
00:15:20.429 --> 00:15:24.289
Way you lined it out. All right, Dave. Boy, be careful.
270
00:15:24.330 --> 00:15:26.289
Dave, there might be a shortcut to some of the
271
00:15:26.330 --> 00:15:30.259
evidence to Zaleski's secretary, Ilda Krakow. Huh?
272
00:15:30.279 --> 00:15:32.419
Yes, she was going in the aisle all the time
273
00:15:32.480 --> 00:15:35.799
I was there. Maybe I can make Ilda Krakow really
274
00:15:35.820 --> 00:15:46.659
go for Vince Powell. Okay. Vince Carl asked me to
275
00:15:46.679 --> 00:15:49.220
go out with him tonight, John Celestis. Of course, you
276
00:15:49.259 --> 00:15:49.980
accepted me.
277
00:15:50.320 --> 00:15:53.019
Look, Carl, I'm not telling you how to run your business,
278
00:15:53.080 --> 00:15:54.539
but I don't trust Carl.
279
00:15:54.600 --> 00:15:56.799
How do we know who he is? That's what I
280
00:15:56.870 --> 00:15:59.830
intend to find out, Edger. Who he really is.
281
00:16:00.789 --> 00:16:02.970
If he actually was a member of the Tyler crowd
282
00:16:03.009 --> 00:16:05.210
and did serve time in Mason City, as he says,
283
00:16:05.230 --> 00:16:07.730
then a fingerprint check will prove it.
284
00:16:08.809 --> 00:16:11.190
I can get a routine check through a politician friend.
285
00:16:11.029 --> 00:16:13.840
Of mine in Mason City. The police won't know anything
286
00:16:13.879 --> 00:16:16.860
about it. Oh, I get you, Card. You're going to
287
00:16:16.919 --> 00:16:19.419
use Hilda to get a set of Powell's prints, huh?
288
00:16:20.200 --> 00:16:25.740
Hilda, use the compact trick. Make sure it's open when
289
00:16:25.779 --> 00:16:31.240
you drop it till the powder spills out. For his
290
00:16:31.340 --> 00:16:34.960
own sake, Vince Powell had better be everything he says
291
00:16:35.039 --> 00:16:35.460
he is.
292
00:16:41.700 --> 00:16:52.149
Well, good night, please. Good night, Hilda. Aren't you going
293
00:16:52.190 --> 00:16:53.330
to ask me in for a night, Kat?
294
00:16:54.990 --> 00:16:58.309
Count Gillespie doesn't approve of my entertaining friends in his home.
295
00:16:59.409 --> 00:17:01.019
But I've had a wonderful evening again.
296
00:17:01.100 --> 00:17:03.860
Thanks. I know a better way than that of saying thanks. Hmm?
297
00:17:04.319 --> 00:17:04.420
Yeah.
298
00:17:11.369 --> 00:17:15.859
My compact had slipped right out of my hand. Shows
299
00:17:15.890 --> 00:17:19.319
what a kiss can do sometimes. There's powder spilled all over.
300
00:17:19.339 --> 00:17:21.640
No use crying over spilled powder.
301
00:17:23.079 --> 00:17:25.759
Vince, aren't you going to pick up my compact?
302
00:17:27.720 --> 00:17:28.039
Well?
303
00:17:29.420 --> 00:17:31.200
Sure, I'll clean it off with my handkerchief.
304
00:17:31.680 --> 00:17:34.640
No, no. Never mind, Vince. I'll clean it when I
305
00:17:34.660 --> 00:17:38.119
get inside. Okay. Here. Thanks.
306
00:17:41.569 --> 00:17:46.289
That's supposed to mean bad luck. I hope not, James.
307
00:17:46.890 --> 00:17:49.819
I hope dropping this compact meant only good luck.
308
00:17:50.880 --> 00:18:05.269
For both of us. Now, back to Counterspy.
309
00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:14.099
Crouched in the closet of his room, Harry Peters is
310
00:18:14.119 --> 00:18:16.099
working over a small two-way radio.
311
00:18:17.660 --> 00:18:21.509
Peters to Harding. Peters to Harding. Come in, Dave. Peters
312
00:18:21.549 --> 00:18:21.910
to Harding.
313
00:18:21.950 --> 00:18:24.970
Go ahead, Peters. Dave, I thought I'd never get you
314
00:18:25.009 --> 00:18:26.750
on this two-way. I had some trouble with the condenser.
315
00:18:26.769 --> 00:18:28.430
Been fooling around with it for almost an hour. How
316
00:18:28.869 --> 00:18:32.200
did you do with Zaleski's secretary tonight? He'll have pulled
317
00:18:32.240 --> 00:18:34.859
a fast one on me, Dave. Got my fingerprints by
318
00:18:34.960 --> 00:18:37.599
using the old dropped compact gang. I couldn't avoid it.
319
00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:41.079
And Zaleski's not as sold on Vince Powell as we
320
00:18:41.119 --> 00:18:41.509
thought he was.
321
00:18:42.180 --> 00:18:44.519
I figure you'll probably have somebody in Mason City check
322
00:18:44.599 --> 00:18:45.220
on my prints.
323
00:18:45.940 --> 00:18:48.539
You sit tight, Peters. I'll contact Washington and have a
324
00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:50.990
set of your prints rushed out to the Mason City police.
325
00:18:51.369 --> 00:18:55.210
We'll make it easy for Zaleski. Okay, Dad. Here's hoping
326
00:18:55.230 --> 00:18:56.410
we beat Zaleski to the punch.
327
00:19:11.220 --> 00:19:13.920
John Zaweski, use a sample of a poised on a
328
00:19:13.960 --> 00:19:18.400
traveler's check for the new front flight.
329
00:19:18.759 --> 00:19:22.799
Excellent counterfeiting, ain't ya? Don't want that press stopped until
330
00:19:22.819 --> 00:19:24.720
the run is completed. Then you'll set it up for
331
00:19:24.740 --> 00:19:27.329
the run on backflip. Too bad we haven't got that
332
00:19:27.390 --> 00:19:28.970
backflip right now, John.
333
00:19:29.009 --> 00:19:31.630
We'll have it by tomorrow night when Vince Powell makes
334
00:19:31.670 --> 00:19:32.269
his second.
335
00:19:32.769 --> 00:19:35.250
Ah, and a final delivery.
336
00:19:35.309 --> 00:19:37.529
I should know. Someone's coming down the stairs to the
337
00:19:37.549 --> 00:19:39.930
place right now. Wait, I'll log out through the transparent mirror.
338
00:19:41.180 --> 00:19:43.380
Let's kill them and bolt the door, I tell you.
339
00:19:43.400 --> 00:19:43.539
Right.
340
00:19:41.230 --> 00:19:48.880
It's Hilda, on Boca Doit. Right. Come on, Hilda. I
341
00:19:49.500 --> 00:19:51.579
was going to ask you, but a call just came
342
00:19:51.640 --> 00:19:52.599
in from Mason City.
343
00:19:53.720 --> 00:19:53.920
And?
344
00:19:54.180 --> 00:19:57.519
The fingerprint's checked. Vince Powell's everything he says he is.
345
00:19:57.960 --> 00:20:01.650
Looks to me, it sounds like our girlfriend Hilda's fallen again.
346
00:20:01.670 --> 00:20:04.390
Why, don't be silly. Would be a shame, Hilda, if
347
00:20:04.410 --> 00:20:05.849
you fall in love with Powell.
348
00:20:07.079 --> 00:20:09.309
Would be such a short-lived romance.
349
00:20:10.029 --> 00:20:12.789
What? What do you think?
350
00:20:13.170 --> 00:20:16.849
I'm afraid, Hilda, that Vince Powell will soon join his friend,
351
00:20:16.869 --> 00:20:18.670
Carl Watson.
352
00:20:18.710 --> 00:20:23.200
But Vince hasn't double-crossed you. Did you think I was
353
00:20:23.240 --> 00:20:25.160
really going to pay him for those plates?
354
00:20:26.079 --> 00:20:32.410
My own plates? The man's practically a blackmailer. And I
355
00:20:32.400 --> 00:20:34.150
detest blackmailers.
356
00:20:47.529 --> 00:20:49.359
Vince, I'm so glad I found you in your room.
357
00:20:49.380 --> 00:20:50.460
What's the matter, Gilda?
358
00:20:50.700 --> 00:20:53.380
Take an honest day a minute. Look, don't deliver that
359
00:20:53.440 --> 00:20:55.019
back plate to the count tomorrow night.
360
00:20:55.039 --> 00:20:56.799
But I've got a deal. He's going to kill you.
361
00:20:57.480 --> 00:20:57.740
What?
362
00:20:58.000 --> 00:21:00.259
Just as soon as you turn that back plate over
363
00:21:00.299 --> 00:21:01.809
to him, he's going to have Etcher kill you.
364
00:21:02.369 --> 00:21:05.750
Vince, I don't want that to happen to you. You don't?
365
00:21:07.009 --> 00:21:11.089
You don't believe me. Should I? Vince, I don't want
366
00:21:11.109 --> 00:21:11.670
to help you.
367
00:21:12.069 --> 00:21:12.269
Why?
368
00:21:13.640 --> 00:21:19.450
Because you're nice, and I liked you very much when
369
00:21:19.490 --> 00:21:23.809
you kissed me the other night. You know something? I'm
370
00:21:23.829 --> 00:21:28.799
beginning to believe you. Thanks for the tip, Hilda. Well,
371
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:33.960
I've got to get back now. Maybe I'll hear from
372
00:21:33.980 --> 00:21:34.740
you sometime, Vince.
373
00:21:39.240 --> 00:21:39.880
Goodbye.
374
00:21:40.200 --> 00:21:43.619
That's it. You move, Paul, and the gun goes off. Linda,
375
00:21:43.740 --> 00:21:46.200
I didn't know he followed me here. Believe me. It's okay, Hilda.
376
00:21:46.640 --> 00:21:49.059
Thanks for the try, anyway. Hilda, I told the count
377
00:21:49.079 --> 00:21:51.500
it seemed like you couldn't be trusted. I heard the
378
00:21:51.539 --> 00:21:54.160
talk you two had in the air. Come on, both
379
00:21:54.180 --> 00:21:57.269
of you. Count Zalewski's waiting for you downstairs in the car.
380
00:21:57.289 --> 00:21:58.670
It's kind of cold out there, too. Do you mind
381
00:21:58.690 --> 00:21:59.730
if I get my coat out of the car? I'm
382
00:21:59.750 --> 00:22:00.630
trying tricks.
383
00:22:00.710 --> 00:22:05.349
Don't worry. I know better. Come on, come on. Make
384
00:22:05.410 --> 00:22:05.849
it snappy.
385
00:22:05.950 --> 00:22:07.869
Right with you. I'm just looking for my best coat.
386
00:22:08.789 --> 00:22:10.450
After all, I want to look stylish when I go
387
00:22:10.519 --> 00:22:11.599
riding with Count Zaleski.
388
00:22:11.680 --> 00:22:13.720
I said snap it up. Here it is.
389
00:22:16.900 --> 00:22:19.920
Nice looking coat, huh? Get it on fast, pal. A
390
00:22:19.960 --> 00:22:21.710
cop don't like to be kept waiting.
391
00:22:21.849 --> 00:22:34.589
Yeah. Enter, there's a turn off the main highway up ahead.
392
00:22:34.839 --> 00:22:39.200
Take it. We're flushing, consular. Hilda brought here with me.
393
00:22:39.220 --> 00:22:42.279
She's got the shakes, cons. Hilda recalls what happened to
394
00:22:42.339 --> 00:22:46.279
Carl Walton, don't you? Consular, please don't do that to me.
395
00:22:46.700 --> 00:22:49.519
You don't have to worry about being thrown from the car, Hilda.
396
00:22:50.920 --> 00:22:53.450
I've got something special planned for you when we get.
397
00:22:53.369 --> 00:22:54.210
Through with Powell.
398
00:22:54.670 --> 00:22:56.730
You know, Count, I thought you were a smart operator.
399
00:22:57.190 --> 00:22:59.789
Why should you doubt it now, Powell? Because getting rid
400
00:22:59.849 --> 00:23:01.230
of me isn't going to get you what you want.
401
00:23:02.250 --> 00:23:13.059
Here's a time-off, cop. Uh-huh. Uh, you were saying, Powell?
402
00:23:13.640 --> 00:23:17.569
Oh, yes, about my lack of judgment and disposing of
403
00:23:17.609 --> 00:23:18.069
you now.
404
00:23:18.109 --> 00:23:20.529
You need that back plate to finish printing the traveler's check.
405
00:23:20.549 --> 00:23:21.549
You'll never get it this way.
406
00:23:22.410 --> 00:23:25.819
I realize that. Well, I'm forced to attend to first
407
00:23:25.900 --> 00:23:28.220
things first. It'll take Etcher a long time to make
408
00:23:28.259 --> 00:23:30.220
a new plate. You can save all that time.
409
00:23:30.240 --> 00:23:34.279
Sorry, pal. No more deals. Be good enough to open
410
00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:36.109
that door. Look, Count, don't be a sucker.
411
00:23:36.200 --> 00:23:38.619
Open the door, pal, unless you prefer that I fire
412
00:23:38.730 --> 00:23:39.829
this gun at you.
413
00:23:41.130 --> 00:23:43.250
Police car. I can see the headlights in the rear
414
00:23:43.269 --> 00:23:54.029
view mirror. Step on it, Etcher. They're gated on us. Faster, faster.
415
00:23:54.130 --> 00:23:56.430
I can't get any more out of it, cop. They'll
416
00:23:56.450 --> 00:23:58.549
be up to us in a minute. All right, slow down.
417
00:23:58.569 --> 00:24:01.309
Don't stop. Let them come. Are you crazy? Don't stop,
418
00:24:01.410 --> 00:24:03.589
I said. All they can do is give us a
419
00:24:03.609 --> 00:24:06.269
ticket for speeding. Brother, are you in for a surprise?
420
00:24:08.549 --> 00:24:10.490
Oh, Hilda, I love you so much as to open
421
00:24:10.509 --> 00:24:14.130
your mouth.
422
00:24:15.329 --> 00:24:17.650
I shoot. Remember your tune, not a word.
423
00:24:17.710 --> 00:24:19.990
Brayden, you and Carpenter come to the other side of
424
00:24:20.009 --> 00:24:20.829
the car. All right.
425
00:24:22.420 --> 00:24:25.079
All right, everybody out. What's the meaning of this?
426
00:24:25.099 --> 00:24:28.660
We're under arrest by the United States government. Keep them covered, Braden.
427
00:24:28.680 --> 00:24:29.240
Got it, Mr.
428
00:24:29.259 --> 00:24:29.539
Harding.
429
00:24:29.640 --> 00:24:29.859
Harding?
430
00:24:29.880 --> 00:24:32.200
Do you know what I meant, Count Zaleski? I had
431
00:24:32.220 --> 00:24:34.069
a couple of bad minutes back there, Mr. Harding, before
432
00:24:34.089 --> 00:24:36.190
I heard the patrol car siren. Sorry we took so long, Peter.
433
00:24:36.210 --> 00:24:38.089
We wanted to avoid shooting on the main highway.
434
00:24:38.250 --> 00:24:38.789
What is this?
435
00:24:39.309 --> 00:24:42.329
This, Zaleski, is my assistant, Counter-Spy Agent Harry Peters. And
436
00:24:42.390 --> 00:24:44.549
it's also the wind-up for you and your gang, Zaleski.
437
00:24:45.619 --> 00:24:47.299
By the way, Etcher, thanks for giving me the chance
438
00:24:47.319 --> 00:24:49.019
to get my coat out of that closet. When I
439
00:24:49.019 --> 00:24:50.859
went in there, I switched on a radio transmitter and
440
00:24:50.880 --> 00:24:52.299
my conversation with you tipped off Mr.
441
00:24:52.420 --> 00:24:53.559
Harding as to what was going on.
442
00:24:53.579 --> 00:24:56.400
Chief, I want to talk to you about Hilda Krakow,
443
00:24:56.420 --> 00:24:57.980
about putting in a clemency plea for her when they
444
00:24:58.000 --> 00:24:58.539
come to trial.
445
00:24:59.220 --> 00:25:01.569
Brayden, you and Carpenter take care of this bunch. Will do, Mr.
446
00:25:01.619 --> 00:25:01.920
Harding.
447
00:25:02.240 --> 00:25:02.740
Come on, Peter.
448
00:25:03.160 --> 00:25:05.740
We'll talk about that clemency plea on the way back
449
00:25:05.769 --> 00:25:06.140
to town.
450
00:25:20.519 --> 00:25:23.619
Tune in every Tuesday and Thursday, same time, same station,
451
00:25:23.640 --> 00:25:27.660
to Counterspy. Listen on Thursday for the exciting case of
452
00:25:27.700 --> 00:25:30.740
the rats of relief. An empty truck and a dead
453
00:25:30.799 --> 00:25:33.380
man lay at the bottom of the river as rats
454
00:25:33.440 --> 00:25:36.680
of relief gnawed at the goodwill between America and Europe.
455
00:25:37.400 --> 00:25:40.210
To smash the racket, a Counterspy took his life in
456
00:25:40.250 --> 00:25:43.720
his hands to save another life. Be tuned in on
457
00:25:43.759 --> 00:25:48.519
Thursday to Case of the Rats of Relief on Counterspy.
458
00:26:01.069 --> 00:26:03.990
Tonight's Counterspy program originated in New York and was directed
459
00:26:04.009 --> 00:26:04.539
by Leonard L.
460
00:26:04.569 --> 00:26:04.930
Bass.
461
00:26:05.190 --> 00:26:08.589
Dramatized by Edward Adamson, featured Don McLaughlin and Mandel Kramer,
462
00:26:08.609 --> 00:26:10.009
with music by Jesse Crawford.
463
00:26:11.529 --> 00:26:15.549
Counterspy is a Phillips H. Lord production for Pepsi-Cola. Enjoy
464
00:26:15.569 --> 00:26:17.170
some delicious Pepsi tonight.
465
00:26:17.849 --> 00:26:22.039
Welcome back.
466
00:26:41.710 --> 00:26:45.400
As I said before the episode, the quality is not great,
467
00:26:45.640 --> 00:26:51.460
but I did catch Ralph Bell in this episode as Etcher. Overall,
468
00:26:51.519 --> 00:26:57.240
I thought the Count was quite ruthless and intimidating, which
469
00:26:57.579 --> 00:27:05.099
certainly can be a one of those criminals who seemed
470
00:27:05.299 --> 00:27:10.299
destined to get caught because he left a trail of bodies.
471
00:27:10.660 --> 00:27:14.220
And really, the only way that he got caught here
472
00:27:14.619 --> 00:27:20.369
was because on that second murder, he didn't verify that
473
00:27:20.930 --> 00:27:24.890
he had been given the correct location of the plates.
474
00:27:25.369 --> 00:27:28.910
before he killed off his henchmen. And the murder of
475
00:27:29.109 --> 00:27:32.430
Peter seemed to be based more on a, it's the
476
00:27:32.529 --> 00:27:36.730
principle of the matter. I don't want to be seen
477
00:27:36.829 --> 00:27:41.410
as playing blackmail, even if it means that I am
478
00:27:41.990 --> 00:27:45.779
forfeiting a plate and all the works that Etcher went
479
00:27:45.859 --> 00:27:49.599
in to make it. Listener comments and feedback. And we go,
480
00:27:49.980 --> 00:27:53.829
first of all, to Patreon regarding the case of the
481
00:27:54.430 --> 00:27:58.650
high-class hijacker. David Harding grows on me all the time
482
00:27:58.710 --> 00:28:02.019
as a leader. He is very smart, creative, and would
483
00:28:02.039 --> 00:28:05.619
be a great boss to work for. Definitely agreed. He
484
00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:09.170
does show a lot of creativity, but he also does
485
00:28:09.230 --> 00:28:13.769
care about keeping his people safe. A random Spotify user writes,
486
00:28:14.089 --> 00:28:17.390
Central City. Maybe this is the same place where Mr.
487
00:28:17.430 --> 00:28:21.619
Chameleon is from. He worked at Central Police Headquarters, and
488
00:28:21.660 --> 00:28:25.579
he was the most famous and dreaded detective. Heck, maybe
489
00:28:25.660 --> 00:28:29.480
David Harding was working alongside him and didn't even know
490
00:28:30.359 --> 00:28:34.670
it because of the disguise. trying to remember whether they
491
00:28:34.769 --> 00:28:39.710
specifically said this in Mr. Chameleon, but I always took
492
00:28:39.769 --> 00:28:45.210
the series as being based in New York and the
493
00:28:45.529 --> 00:28:52.720
central police headquarters was the particular place where he worked
494
00:28:53.000 --> 00:28:59.500
and not a separate city. Personally, when I heard Central City,
495
00:28:59.519 --> 00:29:03.740
I thought of one of my favorite superheroes of all time,
496
00:29:03.769 --> 00:29:06.609
who I've loved since I was nine and saw the
497
00:29:06.670 --> 00:29:14.369
John Wesley ship live-action version in 1990, The Flash. Of course,
498
00:29:14.710 --> 00:29:18.750
Central City was not actually the home of the original Flash,
499
00:29:18.829 --> 00:29:23.829
who had been published in comics at this point, Jay Garrick,
500
00:29:23.910 --> 00:29:27.799
who was located in New York City at the time.
501
00:29:28.279 --> 00:29:33.849
One thing you find reading and listening to old Golden
502
00:29:33.940 --> 00:29:37.910
Age fiction is that Central City was just one of
503
00:29:37.970 --> 00:29:42.900
those common names. Go City was to an extent, but
504
00:29:43.859 --> 00:29:51.109
much like Gotham, Central City became so associated with the superhero,
505
00:29:51.250 --> 00:29:54.809
you wouldn't really, as a writer, associate it with some
506
00:29:54.890 --> 00:29:59.480
other character nowadays. but there were plenty of generic central
507
00:29:59.519 --> 00:30:00.539
cities back.
508
00:30:00.339 --> 00:30:00.880
In the day.
509
00:30:01.200 --> 00:30:06.660
Then, Peter writes regarding the episode The Society Swindler, Counterspy
510
00:30:06.700 --> 00:30:10.089
hasn't exactly been my favorite series to listen to, but
511
00:30:10.130 --> 00:30:13.069
this episode was fantastic from start to finish. It was
512
00:30:13.109 --> 00:30:17.170
a good story with memorable villains and had a satisfying ending.
513
00:30:17.289 --> 00:30:18.579
Well, thanks so much, Peter.
514
00:30:19.539 --> 00:30:22.980
And then we had another comment regarding the episode on
515
00:30:23.039 --> 00:30:28.160
YouTube and casting. Saisoff writes another casting note. If that
516
00:30:28.200 --> 00:30:31.599
wasn't Raymond Edward Johnson in the role of Babson, I'll
517
00:30:31.640 --> 00:30:34.640
eat my hat. I mean, several months ago, I suspected
518
00:30:34.660 --> 00:30:36.680
that I heard him in a minor role as a doctor,
519
00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:39.250
but this time I'm sure of it. Now, if only
520
00:30:39.349 --> 00:30:41.569
Mary could have been with him to sell us some
521
00:30:41.630 --> 00:30:45.349
Lipton tea, the setup would have been complete. Well, thanks
522
00:30:45.390 --> 00:30:48.660
so much, Sesov, and I'll take your word on it.
523
00:30:49.220 --> 00:30:51.400
I've not gotten to the point where I can just
524
00:30:51.619 --> 00:30:56.509
easily clock Raymond Edward Johnson's voice. So I can't say
525
00:30:56.509 --> 00:31:01.150
100% for sure whether you're right or wrong. But regardless,
526
00:31:01.490 --> 00:31:05.049
your hat is safe. Thanks so much. And once again,
527
00:31:05.109 --> 00:31:07.650
thanks for the comment. Now it's time to thank our
528
00:31:07.710 --> 00:31:11.609
Patreon supporter of the day. Thank you to James, Patreon
