00:00:24,560 --> 00:00:27,280
I'm your host, Ali McLaughlin-Sulkowski.
6
00:00:27,280 --> 00:00:29,680
And I'm your co-host, Eli Sulkowski.
7
00:00:29,680 --> 00:00:34,400
And this is Cold and Missing, where we cover cold cases and missing person cases.
8
00:00:34,400 --> 00:00:37,240
Hello everyone and welcome back to Cold and Missing.
9
00:00:37,240 --> 00:00:38,900
I'm your host, Ali.
10
00:00:38,900 --> 00:00:40,680
And I'm your co-host, Eli.
11
00:00:40,680 --> 00:00:41,680
Welcome back, everyone.
12
00:00:41,680 --> 00:00:47,720
I just wanted to take a minute at the top just to say a quick apology that we weren't
13
00:00:47,720 --> 00:00:50,160
able to bring you an episode last week.
14
00:00:50,160 --> 00:00:58,480
COVID hit our household pretty hard and we just needed a good rest and some time to heal.
15
00:00:58,480 --> 00:01:00,320
So it's that time of year.
16
00:01:00,320 --> 00:01:02,880
Make sure you're washing your hands, everybody.
17
00:01:02,880 --> 00:01:04,640
Oh, and happy Halloween.
18
00:01:04,640 --> 00:01:07,500
I think this episode comes out officially on Halloween.
19
00:01:07,500 --> 00:01:08,960
So happy Halloween.
20
00:01:08,960 --> 00:01:09,960
Be safe out there.
21
00:01:09,960 --> 00:01:13,580
If you're going out trick or treating, be safe.
22
00:01:13,580 --> 00:01:20,100
We are very blessed this year to be attending some great friend's wedding on Halloween and
23
00:01:20,100 --> 00:01:22,160
we're super excited for it.
24
00:01:22,160 --> 00:01:27,520
So yeah, if you're going out and celebrating in any capacity, please be safe.
25
00:01:27,520 --> 00:01:35,840
But I think we can jump right into this week's episode, which is episode number 107.
26
00:01:35,840 --> 00:01:37,100
Let's do it.
27
00:01:37,100 --> 00:01:43,760
So just as a quick content warning at the top, this case does involve a young person.
28
00:01:43,760 --> 00:01:48,400
Today we're talking about the missing person case of Jared Negrete.
29
00:01:48,400 --> 00:01:55,620
And this takes place in July of 1991 in San Bernardino County, California.
30
00:01:55,620 --> 00:01:57,760
But first a little bit about Jared.
31
00:01:57,760 --> 00:02:02,200
Jared is 12 years old in July of 1991.
32
00:02:02,200 --> 00:02:07,960
He lives with his parents, Felipe and Linda Negrete in El Monte, California.
33
00:02:07,960 --> 00:02:12,520
Jared is a shy young man, but he is extremely smart.
34
00:02:12,520 --> 00:02:18,260
He's an eighth grader and a proud member of Boy Scout Troop number 538.
35
00:02:18,260 --> 00:02:24,280
The Boy Scout Troop is sponsored by his church, the El Monte Congregation of the Church of
36
00:02:24,280 --> 00:02:27,360
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
37
00:02:27,360 --> 00:02:30,820
And now a timeline of events.
38
00:02:30,820 --> 00:02:38,960
On Friday, July 19th, 1991, Jared is wearing his Boy Scout uniform, green pants and a tan
39
00:02:38,960 --> 00:02:40,160
shirt.
40
00:02:40,160 --> 00:02:43,880
He's on his first overnight trip with his Boy Scout Troop.
41
00:02:43,880 --> 00:02:47,960
There are five other Scouts and their troop leader, Dennis Knight.
42
00:02:47,960 --> 00:02:54,720
This troop planned to hike to the summit of San Gregorio, which is over 11,000 foot summit
43
00:02:54,720 --> 00:02:58,120
and the highest point in Southern California.
44
00:02:58,120 --> 00:03:04,000
The plan was to hike from Camp Toquits, which is a Boy Scout camp, to the summit.
45
00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:09,000
It takes about a full day to hike to the summit and then hike back down to the base level.
46
00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:15,280
So when I was researching this case, most wilderness guides say that this is at minimum
47
00:03:15,280 --> 00:03:19,800
like a one camping night hike.
48
00:03:19,800 --> 00:03:25,360
So on Friday, as the Boy Scout Troop headed to the summit, Jared was having trouble keeping
49
00:03:25,360 --> 00:03:27,360
up with the other hikers.
50
00:03:27,360 --> 00:03:32,240
By all accounts, it appears that this was his first time climbing at this elevation
51
00:03:32,240 --> 00:03:34,960
and the altitude was getting to him.
52
00:03:34,960 --> 00:03:38,760
It appears that the Boy Scout Troop carried on without him.
53
00:03:38,760 --> 00:03:40,720
There are some different reports.
54
00:03:40,720 --> 00:03:45,320
Some say that the Scout leader told Jared to stay behind on the trail while they went
55
00:03:45,320 --> 00:03:48,880
ahead to the summit and they would come back to get him.
56
00:03:48,880 --> 00:03:53,560
Other reports are that Jared just couldn't keep up with the troop and they moved ahead
57
00:03:53,560 --> 00:03:55,360
without him.
58
00:03:55,360 --> 00:03:59,120
Either way, Jared is left alone on the mountainside.
59
00:03:59,120 --> 00:04:04,480
Jared was last seen by a firefighter that was walking the Vivian Creek Trail.
60
00:04:04,480 --> 00:04:08,840
He saw Jared leaving the marked trail and he called out to him that it was safer to
61
00:04:08,840 --> 00:04:10,620
stay on the trail.
62
00:04:10,620 --> 00:04:14,400
The sighting happened around 5 or 6 p.m.
63
00:04:14,400 --> 00:04:16,680
Both times have been reported.
64
00:04:16,680 --> 00:04:21,120
There are reports that other hikers saw the troop leader at the summit and mentioned that
65
00:04:21,120 --> 00:04:23,240
they were worried about the boy.
66
00:04:23,240 --> 00:04:28,200
When the Scout leader couldn't locate Jared, he ends up hiking 12 miles in the dark to
67
00:04:28,200 --> 00:04:30,400
be able to report him missing.
68
00:04:30,400 --> 00:04:35,960
By the time Dennis Knight is able to report Jared is missing, darkness has already fallen
69
00:04:35,960 --> 00:04:39,240
so authorities couldn't spring into action.
70
00:04:39,240 --> 00:04:43,560
But they start making plans to begin searching at daybreak.
71
00:04:43,560 --> 00:04:49,400
At 7 a.m. the next morning, Saturday, July 20th, a massive search for Jared is launched.
72
00:04:49,400 --> 00:04:52,480
They are hopeful that he is still alive.
73
00:04:52,480 --> 00:04:57,520
While he wasn't dressed for the weather, it got down to around 50 degrees that night
74
00:04:57,520 --> 00:05:03,200
and he was only in a t-shirt, but searchers believe that he did have some water with him
75
00:05:03,200 --> 00:05:06,200
and that they'll be able to locate him.
76
00:05:06,200 --> 00:05:10,880
It's believed that he had about two quarts of water in a canteen.
77
00:05:10,880 --> 00:05:14,560
Searchers have to take their time due to the steep terrain.
78
00:05:14,560 --> 00:05:19,080
Police also launch helicopters to try to search for him via the air.
79
00:05:19,080 --> 00:05:23,980
However Jared's boy scout uniform would make him blend into the wilderness making it harder
80
00:05:23,980 --> 00:05:26,320
to spot from a helicopter.
81
00:05:26,320 --> 00:05:31,680
They do attempt to use thermal search from the helicopter during the day, but because
82
00:05:31,680 --> 00:05:37,840
it's the middle of July, the temperatures are so hot that surfaces are absorbing the
83
00:05:37,840 --> 00:05:41,640
heat and it's making it harder to look for Jared.
84
00:05:41,640 --> 00:05:46,720
No sign of Jared is found that first day, but searchers plan to begin at daybreak again
85
00:05:46,720 --> 00:05:48,400
the next day.
86
00:05:48,400 --> 00:05:53,480
On Sunday, July 21st, Jared has been missing since Friday.
87
00:05:53,480 --> 00:05:55,960
The search starts at dawn.
88
00:05:55,960 --> 00:06:00,280
Police and searchers are still hopeful that Jared is alive.
89
00:06:00,280 --> 00:06:02,200
On Sunday, they catch a break.
90
00:06:02,200 --> 00:06:07,560
They find a set of footprints that match the type of tennis shoes that Jared was wearing.
91
00:06:07,560 --> 00:06:13,880
They find the footprints at around the 10,000 foot elevation on the southern slope.
92
00:06:13,880 --> 00:06:19,600
San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy Doruff says, quote, they picked up a set of tracks
93
00:06:19,600 --> 00:06:22,000
that they feel pretty good about.
94
00:06:22,000 --> 00:06:26,760
That's the most positive thing we've had all day, end quote.
95
00:06:26,760 --> 00:06:31,040
Searchers follow the footprints, but again, when night falls, they have to call the search
96
00:06:31,040 --> 00:06:32,400
off.
97
00:06:32,400 --> 00:06:38,160
On Monday, July 22nd, right at dawn, searchers are back following the footprints, hoping
98
00:06:38,160 --> 00:06:40,560
that they lead to Jared.
99
00:06:40,560 --> 00:06:45,160
Searchers follow the footprints until they lead to an area of rock and shale where they
100
00:06:45,160 --> 00:06:47,040
lose the trail.
101
00:06:47,040 --> 00:06:51,720
Searchers focus on six square miles around the footprints to see if they can find any
102
00:06:51,720 --> 00:06:54,540
other sign of Jared.
103
00:06:54,540 --> 00:06:58,880
Searchers are worried that he may have fallen and hurt himself, and that's preventing him
104
00:06:58,880 --> 00:07:02,760
from either calling out to searchers or being seen.
105
00:07:02,760 --> 00:07:07,200
There are gullies and ravines in the area that are easy to fall into.
106
00:07:07,200 --> 00:07:11,680
The Boy Scouts of America also announced that they're going to look into what happened.
107
00:07:11,680 --> 00:07:18,040
Quote, obviously, we would be concerned if proper safety protocol was not in fact followed,
108
00:07:18,040 --> 00:07:19,480
end quote.
109
00:07:19,480 --> 00:07:25,400
But the scouts say that right now, their efforts are focused on finding Jared, their thought
110
00:07:25,400 --> 00:07:29,840
being, let's bring him home first, and then we'll look into what happened.
111
00:07:29,840 --> 00:07:35,560
However, as night begins to fall on Monday, the search is called off again.
112
00:07:35,560 --> 00:07:40,960
On Tuesday, July 23rd, Jared has been missing for four days now.
113
00:07:40,960 --> 00:07:45,320
Police have the scout leader come in with the rest of the scout troop to reenact the
114
00:07:45,320 --> 00:07:48,720
last moments that they saw Jared.
115
00:07:48,720 --> 00:07:51,480
Searchers are desperate to find his trail again.
116
00:07:51,480 --> 00:07:56,400
It's reported that they do find another set of footprints that could be a match.
117
00:07:56,400 --> 00:08:01,320
This time, searchers camp out next to the footprints so they can start searching right
118
00:08:01,320 --> 00:08:03,960
at dawn the next day.
119
00:08:03,960 --> 00:08:08,840
Police are also starting to look into the possibility that Jared was abducted.
120
00:08:08,840 --> 00:08:13,600
As there are no signs of him on the mountain, they can't rule out abduction, but they're
121
00:08:13,600 --> 00:08:20,120
also not finding any signs of foul play, so they keep searching on the mountain for him.
122
00:08:20,120 --> 00:08:25,680
On Wednesday, July 24th, Jared has been missing for five days.
123
00:08:25,680 --> 00:08:30,840
Right at dawn, those who camped out near the footprints start searching at daybreak.
124
00:08:30,840 --> 00:08:34,760
Marines are also joining the search as of Wednesday.
125
00:08:34,760 --> 00:08:39,680
The searchers are still optimistic, quote, the rescue teams have a good feeling about
126
00:08:39,680 --> 00:08:40,680
this.
127
00:08:40,680 --> 00:08:45,240
They aren't looking for a body, but for a live youngster, end quote.
128
00:08:45,240 --> 00:08:49,840
They believe the good weather and the abundance of fresh water would all support Jared and
129
00:08:49,840 --> 00:08:53,560
help him survive five days in the wild.
130
00:08:53,560 --> 00:08:58,400
One of the best trackers in the country arrives to try to help find Jared.
131
00:08:58,400 --> 00:09:03,260
They lead a small team of five and try to focus on finding his trail.
132
00:09:03,260 --> 00:09:08,320
The Boy Scouts also come out with preliminary results from their investigation.
133
00:09:08,320 --> 00:09:14,360
They acknowledge that the scout leader failed to follow several rules, specifically in supervision,
134
00:09:14,360 --> 00:09:17,280
pace, and equipping of hikers.
135
00:09:17,280 --> 00:09:21,960
They point out that two adults should have been on the hike, but there was only one,
136
00:09:21,960 --> 00:09:27,400
that scouts were only supposed to move as fast as their slowest hiker, but instead Jared
137
00:09:27,400 --> 00:09:33,400
was left behind, and that scouts are supposed to carry trail food and weatherproof clothing
138
00:09:33,400 --> 00:09:38,480
on all hikes, but Jared was not properly dressed for the weather.
139
00:09:38,480 --> 00:09:45,040
Additionally, the scout leader failed to file a notice that he was taking the troop on a
140
00:09:45,040 --> 00:09:46,040
hike.
141
00:09:46,040 --> 00:09:52,440
Jared's parents, Felipe and Linda, do not put any blame on the scout leader.
142
00:09:52,440 --> 00:09:54,580
They just want their son home.
143
00:09:54,580 --> 00:09:59,640
On Friday, July 26th, Jared has been missing for one week.
144
00:09:59,640 --> 00:10:02,440
His parents speak to the local news.
145
00:10:02,440 --> 00:10:08,000
His mother Linda says, quote, There are times when I ask God, should we still be hoping?
146
00:10:08,000 --> 00:10:12,280
I have thought of all the things that might have happened, but I have faith in God and
147
00:10:12,280 --> 00:10:13,280
in Jared.
148
00:10:13,280 --> 00:10:15,120
I know he is alive.
149
00:10:15,120 --> 00:10:16,120
End quote.
150
00:10:16,120 --> 00:10:20,240
Again, searchers remain optimistic that Jared is still alive.
151
00:10:20,240 --> 00:10:24,560
Quote, The probability of survival is very high.
152
00:10:24,560 --> 00:10:28,480
He's described as having a good heart and he's not a quitter.
153
00:10:28,480 --> 00:10:29,800
End quote.
154
00:10:29,800 --> 00:10:33,120
More volunteers come out over the weekend to help search.
155
00:10:33,120 --> 00:10:36,560
Hundreds of people take to the mountain to look for Jared.
156
00:10:36,560 --> 00:10:41,960
And on Saturday, July 27th, Jared's been missing for eight days.
157
00:10:41,960 --> 00:10:43,960
There's a break in the case.
158
00:10:43,960 --> 00:10:50,320
They find a camera that belongs to Jared just 45 feet off of the Vivian Creek Trail, near
159
00:10:50,320 --> 00:10:52,760
where he was last seen.
160
00:10:52,760 --> 00:10:57,300
It's reported that the camera was found while following footprints that were believed to
161
00:10:57,300 --> 00:10:59,380
belong to Jared.
162
00:10:59,380 --> 00:11:05,320
Under the camera are some food wrappers, a wrapper from beef jerky and one from a fruit
163
00:11:05,320 --> 00:11:06,800
snack.
164
00:11:06,800 --> 00:11:11,040
It was reported that the items, the wrappers and the camera, were found tucked under a
165
00:11:11,040 --> 00:11:12,800
bush.
166
00:11:12,800 --> 00:11:18,760
Police say, quote, The wrappers, which were probably discarded the first day he was lost,
167
00:11:18,760 --> 00:11:22,880
give us a direction of travel and we hope we'll find him Monday.
168
00:11:22,880 --> 00:11:25,200
We aren't going to just quit looking.
169
00:11:25,200 --> 00:11:27,320
We have somebody's baby out here.
170
00:11:27,320 --> 00:11:29,040
End quote.
171
00:11:29,040 --> 00:11:32,680
Police are able to develop the film from the camera.
172
00:11:32,680 --> 00:11:37,000
Police believe that the camera was dropped on the first or second day that he went missing.
173
00:11:37,000 --> 00:11:43,120
There are 12 photos altogether and only one photo that police believe that Jared took
174
00:11:43,120 --> 00:11:45,440
after he went missing.
175
00:11:45,440 --> 00:11:52,520
Of the 12 photos, 11 of them are of landscapes that would have been seen along the hike.
176
00:11:52,520 --> 00:11:56,480
The last photo was a close up of Jared's face.
177
00:11:56,480 --> 00:12:00,480
It only shows his eyes, eyebrows and nose.
178
00:12:00,480 --> 00:12:06,600
It appears that Jared did take the picture himself at night and the flash was used.
179
00:12:06,600 --> 00:12:09,920
The background is not captured in the photo.
180
00:12:09,920 --> 00:12:14,640
Searchers focus around the area where the camera was found, but again, there is no additional
181
00:12:14,640 --> 00:12:16,600
sign of Jared.
182
00:12:16,600 --> 00:12:23,480
On Monday, July 29th, Jared's mother Linda rides in a helicopter around the search area
183
00:12:23,480 --> 00:12:29,560
talking on a loudspeaker to Jared, telling him to come out from his hiding spot, that
184
00:12:29,560 --> 00:12:33,680
he doesn't need to be afraid of these people and that they're here to help, that he's
185
00:12:33,680 --> 00:12:36,040
not in trouble.
186
00:12:36,040 --> 00:12:39,240
And still, nobody can find Jared.
187
00:12:39,240 --> 00:12:45,080
The search for Jared continues for days, starting near the first light of the day and then getting
188
00:12:45,080 --> 00:12:48,760
called off only when it was too dark to search anymore.
189
00:12:48,760 --> 00:12:56,600
Finally, after Jared had been missing for 17 days, on Sunday, August 4th, police announce
190
00:12:56,600 --> 00:13:01,720
that there is 0% chance that Jared would be found alive at this point and the search is
191
00:13:01,720 --> 00:13:04,480
scaled way back.
192
00:13:04,480 --> 00:13:09,920
Authorities say, quote, as we've said throughout the entire search, when the probability of
193
00:13:09,920 --> 00:13:15,800
survival reaches far below zero and the risk of injury to our people becomes substantially
194
00:13:15,800 --> 00:13:19,240
high, the search will be scaled back.
195
00:13:19,240 --> 00:13:25,080
We believe we reached the zeroing point a few days ago, end quote.
196
00:13:25,080 --> 00:13:31,520
Overall, nearly 16 different police and search and rescue organizations came out to help
197
00:13:31,520 --> 00:13:33,760
assist in the search.
198
00:13:33,760 --> 00:13:40,440
Expert trackers and around 200 search and rescue professionals assisted in the search.
199
00:13:40,440 --> 00:13:46,400
During the search, they found a wallet that someone had lost over a year ago, a microwave
200
00:13:46,400 --> 00:13:53,520
oven, and a plot of marijuana plants with an intricate irrigation system in place.
201
00:13:53,520 --> 00:13:56,000
But they never found Jared.
202
00:13:56,000 --> 00:14:02,200
At this point in 1991, it was the largest search in the region's history.
203
00:14:02,200 --> 00:14:04,760
Jared's family refuses to give up hope.
204
00:14:04,760 --> 00:14:09,400
They ask the governor to revive the full scale search for their son.
205
00:14:09,400 --> 00:14:13,960
The governor's office responds with, quote, the sheriff's department makes the judgment
206
00:14:13,960 --> 00:14:18,840
call as to whether the search would produce any tangible results, but we'll talk to
207
00:14:18,840 --> 00:14:23,880
anybody they want us to talk to to see what can be done, end quote.
208
00:14:23,880 --> 00:14:29,760
A full scale search is never revived, but searchers keep going back looking for Jared,
209
00:14:29,760 --> 00:14:32,720
just on a much smaller scale.
210
00:14:32,720 --> 00:14:39,520
On September 9th, 1991, so it's been about six weeks since Jared vanished, and his family
211
00:14:39,520 --> 00:14:44,200
acknowledges that he likely isn't going to be coming home, and they hold a memorial
212
00:14:44,200 --> 00:14:46,480
service for him.
213
00:14:46,480 --> 00:14:52,320
Over 500 people attend the service to pay respect to Jared's life.
214
00:14:52,320 --> 00:14:56,600
At the service, Jared's uncle hovered in the doorway.
215
00:14:56,600 --> 00:15:02,960
He refused to step foot into the church and later told an elder, quote, to the day I die,
216
00:15:02,960 --> 00:15:08,240
I'll believe that this church and the Boy Scouts of America are responsible for my nephew's
217
00:15:08,240 --> 00:15:11,360
death, end quote.
218
00:15:11,360 --> 00:15:16,800
But that is all we know about the disappearance of Jared Negrete.
219
00:15:16,800 --> 00:15:23,760
So if you know anything about the disappearance of Jared Negrete in July of 1991, or his whereabouts
220
00:15:23,760 --> 00:15:33,440
today, please call the San Bernardino County Sheriff at 909-387-2978.
221
00:15:33,440 --> 00:15:36,320
So that is the case of Jared Negrete.
222
00:15:36,320 --> 00:15:44,040
I was very interested in, obviously, the case as a whole, but the landscape you were speaking
223
00:15:44,040 --> 00:15:54,080
about in particular, the San Bernardino and St. Gorgonio Mountain is a place that I lived
224
00:15:54,080 --> 00:15:56,080
near for a time in my life.
225
00:15:56,080 --> 00:16:00,000
I lived in Santa Monica, California at one point in my life.
226
00:16:00,000 --> 00:16:07,000
Even though I'm a midwesterner, I am relatively familiar with this landscape, environment,
227
00:16:07,000 --> 00:16:12,320
vegetation, the animals that are in these kinds of mountains.
228
00:16:12,320 --> 00:16:21,980
So I was kind of taken by the story in an investigative sense right up until the very
229
00:16:21,980 --> 00:16:23,720
end.
230
00:16:23,720 --> 00:16:31,400
And hearing that statement from his uncle, I could really just feel the familial and
231
00:16:31,400 --> 00:16:38,880
community impact that this lost boy had.
232
00:16:38,880 --> 00:16:42,800
And it's heartbreaking because this was the 90s.
233
00:16:42,800 --> 00:16:49,880
And granted, that's—I hate saying it out loud—a while ago now, it's not necessarily
234
00:16:49,880 --> 00:16:53,360
of a time where this case was unsolvable.
235
00:16:53,360 --> 00:16:54,360
No.
236
00:16:54,360 --> 00:17:01,480
This case, it felt like it was right in their hands, and then it slipped through.
237
00:17:01,480 --> 00:17:03,400
It's really disappointing.
238
00:17:03,400 --> 00:17:09,600
And like you said, the anger that can really be felt at the loss of this young man, the
239
00:17:09,600 --> 00:17:15,200
sense of grief that must be felt to not know where he is or what happened to him, that
240
00:17:15,200 --> 00:17:17,000
can deeply be felt here.
241
00:17:17,000 --> 00:17:20,400
And I feel it so much for the family.
242
00:17:20,400 --> 00:17:30,360
While I don't think that there is any tie or relation to Joseph D'Angelo, aka the Golden
243
00:17:30,360 --> 00:17:40,400
State Killer, he did have two victims in San Bernardino, and it kind of was an area that
244
00:17:40,400 --> 00:17:45,840
he used as his stomping and murdering grounds.
245
00:17:45,840 --> 00:17:53,480
Not necessarily hiking areas, but I do think it's just kind of worth mentioning that Southern
246
00:17:53,480 --> 00:18:01,720
California is a prolific spot or historically has been a prolific spot for serial killers.
247
00:18:01,720 --> 00:18:02,720
Yeah.
248
00:18:02,720 --> 00:18:10,960
Unfortunately, I don't know how much they looked into the abduction angle here.
249
00:18:10,960 --> 00:18:18,880
But there are a lot of, you know, internet forums, comment sections, all of that, where
250
00:18:18,880 --> 00:18:24,240
people do talk about the possibility that Jared was abducted by somebody, that there
251
00:18:24,240 --> 00:18:28,280
were nefarious characters living in this area, people in the woods.
252
00:18:28,280 --> 00:18:31,280
So that's all I think on the table.
253
00:18:31,280 --> 00:18:36,920
And we don't really know to the depth that police investigated that to rule it out because
254
00:18:36,920 --> 00:18:44,080
ultimately hundreds, if not thousands of people searched this mountain for a young man and
255
00:18:44,080 --> 00:18:46,120
he was not found.
256
00:18:46,120 --> 00:18:51,960
Which seems really remarkable to me when you consider small things that they did end up
257
00:18:51,960 --> 00:18:52,960
finding.
258
00:18:52,960 --> 00:18:58,680
Again, about the landscape of San Bernardino, the San Bernardino Mountains, the San Gorgonio
259
00:18:58,680 --> 00:19:01,800
Mountain, which is also known as Old Greyback Mountain.
260
00:19:01,800 --> 00:19:04,680
That's how I was introduced to it.
261
00:19:04,680 --> 00:19:06,180
It is so vast.
262
00:19:06,180 --> 00:19:11,880
And when you look at Southern California on a map, when you even look at the San Bernardino
263
00:19:11,880 --> 00:19:19,280
Mountains on a map, that area, even if you open up the scope just a little bit, it almost
264
00:19:19,280 --> 00:19:22,860
looks like half of Southern California.
265
00:19:22,860 --> 00:19:29,020
And when you compare that landscape to, you know, smaller states next door, on a map,
266
00:19:29,020 --> 00:19:31,560
it can look almost as big as its own state.
267
00:19:31,560 --> 00:19:40,920
So I do think it's interesting that they found anything because the area is so large, but
268
00:19:40,920 --> 00:19:47,520
it also makes sense to me that they did because they were looking for something so specific.
269
00:19:47,520 --> 00:19:51,480
I'm really glad you have that perspective because it's so hard for me to imagine.
270
00:19:51,480 --> 00:19:55,120
I grew up in the Midwest and I've lived in the Midwest my whole life.
271
00:19:55,120 --> 00:19:57,360
So mountains are really foreign to me.
272
00:19:57,360 --> 00:20:03,040
So for me, it feels like thousands of people searching this area, they're finding trails,
273
00:20:03,040 --> 00:20:08,840
they found his camera, they found a wallet somebody had lost a year ago, but they couldn't
274
00:20:08,840 --> 00:20:12,280
find this boy, like how does that happen?
275
00:20:12,280 --> 00:20:16,920
But it makes a lot of sense, like you describing the vastness of it.
276
00:20:16,920 --> 00:20:25,320
That's where I think it is absurd that there was a split from this boy, because that landscape
277
00:20:25,320 --> 00:20:28,200
is massive.
278
00:20:28,200 --> 00:20:34,920
And the elevation changes so much from spot to spot.
279
00:20:34,920 --> 00:20:42,000
I did write down like, did this boy have any skills or survival skills?
280
00:20:42,000 --> 00:20:49,960
And I think his footprints kind of speak for himself because he did survive.
281
00:20:49,960 --> 00:20:56,300
If he walked that far, it meant that he did it in the daytime because you cannot hike
282
00:20:56,300 --> 00:20:58,740
those areas at night.
283
00:20:58,740 --> 00:21:04,840
And I imagine his flashlight, if he had one, was relatively small and the lighting capabilities
284
00:21:04,840 --> 00:21:09,780
of flashlights back in the 90s are nothing close to what they are now.
285
00:21:09,780 --> 00:21:15,080
So the fact that he did it says to me that he fought to survive out there for quite a
286
00:21:15,080 --> 00:21:16,080
while.
287
00:21:16,080 --> 00:21:24,880
Yeah, his footprints, from my understanding, it seems like they were going down the mountain,
288
00:21:24,880 --> 00:21:29,600
like each time they found them, that they were farther down the mountain.
289
00:21:29,600 --> 00:21:32,480
So they were trying to focus farther down.
290
00:21:32,480 --> 00:21:36,360
To me, it seemed like he was trying to get back to that Boy Scout camp.
291
00:21:36,360 --> 00:21:43,240
To your point about how absurd it is that he was left alone, like it is absurd to me.
292
00:21:43,240 --> 00:21:50,640
I am not a Boy Scout leader, but I have worked in recreational camping and the thought of
293
00:21:50,640 --> 00:21:56,400
leaving a kid who was not well known for the mountains.
294
00:21:56,400 --> 00:21:59,760
From everything I read, this was his first overnight trip.
295
00:21:59,760 --> 00:22:02,960
This was his first time doing a hike like this.
296
00:22:02,960 --> 00:22:07,800
The thought of leaving behind a child that does not have those skills and is not comfortable
297
00:22:07,800 --> 00:22:13,720
in that setting because you are trying to get to the summit, that goes against everything.
298
00:22:13,720 --> 00:22:14,720
Everything.
299
00:22:14,720 --> 00:22:17,600
And it was wildly reckless that they did that.
300
00:22:17,600 --> 00:22:24,080
Yeah, my whole body rejected the idea of that happening and it sounds like it is the same
301
00:22:24,080 --> 00:22:25,360
for you too.
302
00:22:25,360 --> 00:22:31,680
I also wrote down what was up with the leadership of this troop.
303
00:22:31,680 --> 00:22:37,600
I know you said that the parents did not point blame at the time, but I have a hard time
304
00:22:37,600 --> 00:22:40,320
reckoning with that.
305
00:22:40,320 --> 00:22:46,680
And granted, we do not have kids, we have not lost children in this way.
306
00:22:46,680 --> 00:22:51,080
I imagine you have to compartmentalize and get right with yourself in a lot of ways to
307
00:22:51,080 --> 00:22:54,400
continue to survive this kind of loss.
308
00:22:54,400 --> 00:22:59,560
But personally, I am at least frustrated on their behalf because I just, I do not really
309
00:22:59,560 --> 00:23:01,080
understand what happened there.
310
00:23:01,080 --> 00:23:05,840
Well, yeah, and the more you kind of mull it over as you are trying to fill in the blanks
311
00:23:05,840 --> 00:23:11,000
of the story, you turn back around and it is like, well, why were all these rules broken?
312
00:23:11,000 --> 00:23:16,120
Is there something nefarious bubbling under the surface that they were trying to cover
313
00:23:16,120 --> 00:23:17,120
up?
314
00:23:17,120 --> 00:23:22,440
This trip was not reported to the Boy Scout office, which is supposed to be protocol.
315
00:23:22,440 --> 00:23:27,720
So was someone just being lazy and forgetful at best?
316
00:23:27,720 --> 00:23:33,880
Or was someone being purposefully negligent at worst?
317
00:23:33,880 --> 00:23:37,880
What happened and why were these mistakes made?
318
00:23:37,880 --> 00:23:44,720
On the error of mistakes that I just want to comment on and how probably all of the
319
00:23:44,720 --> 00:23:46,920
boys were not properly dressed.
320
00:23:46,920 --> 00:23:53,200
Because of the elevation changes and this being a mountainous environment, yes, it is
321
00:23:53,200 --> 00:23:54,760
very hot during the day.
322
00:23:54,760 --> 00:23:59,600
And like you said, the temperature drops to 50 degrees.
323
00:23:59,600 --> 00:24:09,320
And as time goes on, as Southern California moves into the later seasons, past summer,
324
00:24:09,320 --> 00:24:13,840
those temperature differences are even more drastic.
325
00:24:13,840 --> 00:24:20,960
They can be 50 degrees during the day and then drop to below freezing at night.
326
00:24:20,960 --> 00:24:25,880
The weather did catch me off guard again as somebody who did not grow up in or around
327
00:24:25,880 --> 00:24:28,280
mountains that difference.
328
00:24:28,280 --> 00:24:32,520
I know that that kind of happens out in the desert, but I was surprised how drastic it
329
00:24:32,520 --> 00:24:37,740
was in the mountains as well, especially for July, which is when Jared went missing.
330
00:24:37,740 --> 00:24:43,360
And in some of the landscape photos that Jared took on the camera that was found, it does
331
00:24:43,360 --> 00:24:46,120
look like there's snow in certain spots.
332
00:24:46,120 --> 00:24:49,440
Like it, it was cold at night.
333
00:24:49,440 --> 00:24:54,680
Just to pivot a little bit, I just wanted to briefly mention the, the photo, the last
334
00:24:54,680 --> 00:24:58,480
photo of just Jared.
335
00:24:58,480 --> 00:25:01,920
We're going to have it up on our Instagram at cold and missing.
336
00:25:01,920 --> 00:25:02,920
Please go look at it.
337
00:25:02,920 --> 00:25:10,200
But it is a hauntingly captivating photo because we're trying to fill in so many blank spaces
338
00:25:10,200 --> 00:25:11,200
for me.
339
00:25:11,200 --> 00:25:14,400
I'm not looking at it, I'm like searching for what, what is he feeling?
340
00:25:14,400 --> 00:25:15,400
What is he thinking?
341
00:25:15,400 --> 00:25:17,560
What's he trying to communicate right now?
342
00:25:17,560 --> 00:25:26,720
But the picture is really devastating that this is the last moment that we have of him,
343
00:25:26,720 --> 00:25:29,440
you know, captured.
344
00:25:29,440 --> 00:25:39,360
I think the other most haunting element of this story is her son like calling out to
345
00:25:39,360 --> 00:25:42,400
the mountains for him.
346
00:25:42,400 --> 00:25:50,440
I can't really get that imagery or just echo out of my mind of what that must felt like
347
00:25:50,440 --> 00:25:57,300
for her as a mother, as a parent to like the yearning and longing of just calling out to
348
00:25:57,300 --> 00:26:03,840
like echoes of emptiness and to be filled with the possibility that he was still down
349
00:26:03,840 --> 00:26:04,840
there.
350
00:26:04,840 --> 00:26:10,600
It was quite heartbreaking and I imagine that some people in this family are still here
351
00:26:10,600 --> 00:26:11,600
with us.
352
00:26:11,600 --> 00:26:15,000
So my heart really goes out to them.
353
00:26:15,000 --> 00:26:23,880
I hope that with the fact that science has grown and changed and that there's more capabilities
354
00:26:23,880 --> 00:26:30,520
for searching for people in these types of missing cases that there are answers eventually
355
00:26:30,520 --> 00:26:36,440
and that this family has some kind of peace about what happened to this boy.
356
00:26:36,440 --> 00:26:37,440
Definitely.
357
00:26:37,440 --> 00:26:43,160
I hope that Jared comes home one way or the other and that his family is able to put him
358
00:26:43,160 --> 00:26:50,480
to rest and that they get the answers that they deserve because since 1991 that's a long
359
00:26:50,480 --> 00:26:53,920
time to go without answers.
360
00:26:53,920 --> 00:26:58,820
And you know, it's a really popular hike.
361
00:26:58,820 --> 00:27:00,880
People take to the summit a lot.
362
00:27:00,880 --> 00:27:03,320
So it's a popular route.
363
00:27:03,320 --> 00:27:06,080
There are people on that trail all the time.
364
00:27:06,080 --> 00:27:11,680
So I'm hopeful that at some point somebody will find Jared and be able to give the family
365
00:27:11,680 --> 00:27:13,680
those answers.
366
00:27:13,680 --> 00:27:21,680
Again, if you know anything about the disappearance of Jared Negrete in July of 1991, please call
367
00:27:21,680 --> 00:27:28,440
the San Bernardino County Sheriff at 909-387-2978.
368
00:27:28,440 --> 00:27:34,560
And we'll have pictures of Jared on our Instagram at Cold and Missing as well as that last photo
369
00:27:34,560 --> 00:27:39,320
from the camera roll that we were discussing in the episode that'll be on there as well.
370
00:27:39,320 --> 00:27:42,160
Again, at Cold and Missing will pop right up.
371
00:27:42,160 --> 00:27:46,080
And if we ever do need to take a week off because something unexpected happens, we'll
372
00:27:46,080 --> 00:27:51,680
always post about it there so you can stay updated with the podcast there.
373
00:27:51,680 --> 00:27:56,180
Also thank you so much to everyone who's rated and reviewed us these past few weeks.
374
00:27:56,180 --> 00:28:03,960
It's been such an honor that we're part of so many weeks and routines and just in people's
375
00:28:03,960 --> 00:28:07,400
rotation of their podcasts.
376
00:28:07,400 --> 00:28:08,400
It's incredible.
377
00:28:08,400 --> 00:28:12,880
And the fact that so many of you have taken time out of your day to rate us or leave us
378
00:28:12,880 --> 00:28:15,080
a review means the world to me.
379
00:28:15,080 --> 00:28:16,080
So thank you so much.
380
00:28:16,080 --> 00:28:20,280
If you haven't had the opportunity to do that, maybe today's the day, leave us a review.
381
00:28:20,280 --> 00:28:25,880
You can do it on Apple Podcast or our website www.coldandmissing.com.
382
00:28:25,880 --> 00:28:30,280
We have all our old episodes up there as well as transcripts.
383
00:28:30,280 --> 00:28:35,160
So if you or someone you love is hard of hearing, you can follow along with the podcast there.
384
00:28:35,160 --> 00:28:36,760
But that is all I have.
385
00:28:36,760 --> 00:28:39,040
Thank you so much for listening to Cold and Missing.
386
00:28:39,040 --> 00:28:40,640
I'm your host, Allie.
387
00:28:40,640 --> 00:28:42,400
And I'm your co-host, Eli.
388
00:28:42,400 --> 00:28:44,400
Have a good week and stay safe, y'all.
389
00:28:44,400 --> 00:28:45,400
Stay safe, y'all.
390
00:28:45,400 --> 00:28:56,080
And I'll see you next time.
391
00:28:56,080 --> 00:28:57,080
Bye.

I'm your host, Ali McLaughlin-Sulkowski.
6
00:00:27,280 --> 00:00:29,680
And I'm your co-host, Eli Sulkowski.
7
00:00:29,680 --> 00:00:34,400
And this is Cold and Missing, where we cover cold cases and missing person cases.
8
00:00:34,400 --> 00:00:37,240
Hello everyone and welcome back to Cold and Missing.
9
00:00:37,240 --> 00:00:38,900
I'm your host, Ali.
10
00:00:38,900 --> 00:00:40,680
And I'm your co-host, Eli.
11
00:00:40,680 --> 00:00:41,680
Welcome back, everyone.
12
00:00:41,680 --> 00:00:47,720
I just wanted to take a minute at the top just to say a quick apology that we weren't
13
00:00:47,720 --> 00:00:50,160
able to bring you an episode last week.
14
00:00:50,160 --> 00:00:58,480
COVID hit our household pretty hard and we just needed a good rest and some time to heal.
15
00:00:58,480 --> 00:01:00,320
So it's that time of year.
16
00:01:00,320 --> 00:01:02,880
Make sure you're washing your hands, everybody.
17
00:01:02,880 --> 00:01:04,640
Oh, and happy Halloween.
18
00:01:04,640 --> 00:01:07,500
I think this episode comes out officially on Halloween.
19
00:01:07,500 --> 00:01:08,960
So happy Halloween.
20
00:01:08,960 --> 00:01:09,960
Be safe out there.
21
00:01:09,960 --> 00:01:13,580
If you're going out trick or treating, be safe.
22
00:01:13,580 --> 00:01:20,100
We are very blessed this year to be attending some great friend's wedding on Halloween and
23
00:01:20,100 --> 00:01:22,160
we're super excited for it.
24
00:01:22,160 --> 00:01:27,520
So yeah, if you're going out and celebrating in any capacity, please be safe.
25
00:01:27,520 --> 00:01:35,840
But I think we can jump right into this week's episode, which is episode number 107.
26
00:01:35,840 --> 00:01:37,100
Let's do it.
27
00:01:37,100 --> 00:01:43,760
So just as a quick content warning at the top, this case does involve a young person.
28
00:01:43,760 --> 00:01:48,400
Today we're talking about the missing person case of Jared Negrete.
29
00:01:48,400 --> 00:01:55,620
And this takes place in July of 1991 in San Bernardino County, California.
30
00:01:55,620 --> 00:01:57,760
But first a little bit about Jared.
31
00:01:57,760 --> 00:02:02,200
Jared is 12 years old in July of 1991.
32
00:02:02,200 --> 00:02:07,960
He lives with his parents, Felipe and Linda Negrete in El Monte, California.
33
00:02:07,960 --> 00:02:12,520
Jared is a shy young man, but he is extremely smart.
34
00:02:12,520 --> 00:02:18,260
He's an eighth grader and a proud member of Boy Scout Troop number 538.
35
00:02:18,260 --> 00:02:24,280
The Boy Scout Troop is sponsored by his church, the El Monte Congregation of the Church of
36
00:02:24,280 --> 00:02:27,360
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
37
00:02:27,360 --> 00:02:30,820
And now a timeline of events.
38
00:02:30,820 --> 00:02:38,960
On Friday, July 19th, 1991, Jared is wearing his Boy Scout uniform, green pants and a tan
39
00:02:38,960 --> 00:02:40,160
shirt.
40
00:02:40,160 --> 00:02:43,880
He's on his first overnight trip with his Boy Scout Troop.
41
00:02:43,880 --> 00:02:47,960
There are five other Scouts and their troop leader, Dennis Knight.
42
00:02:47,960 --> 00:02:54,720
This troop planned to hike to the summit of San Gregorio, which is over 11,000 foot summit
43
00:02:54,720 --> 00:02:58,120
and the highest point in Southern California.
44
00:02:58,120 --> 00:03:04,000
The plan was to hike from Camp Toquits, which is a Boy Scout camp, to the summit.
45
00:03:04,000 --> 00:03:09,000
It takes about a full day to hike to the summit and then hike back down to the base level.
46
00:03:09,000 --> 00:03:15,280
So when I was researching this case, most wilderness guides say that this is at minimum
47
00:03:15,280 --> 00:03:19,800
like a one camping night hike.
48
00:03:19,800 --> 00:03:25,360
So on Friday, as the Boy Scout Troop headed to the summit, Jared was having trouble keeping
49
00:03:25,360 --> 00:03:27,360
up with the other hikers.
50
00:03:27,360 --> 00:03:32,240
By all accounts, it appears that this was his first time climbing at this elevation
51
00:03:32,240 --> 00:03:34,960
and the altitude was getting to him.
52
00:03:34,960 --> 00:03:38,760
It appears that the Boy Scout Troop carried on without him.
53
00:03:38,760 --> 00:03:40,720
There are some different reports.
54
00:03:40,720 --> 00:03:45,320
Some say that the Scout leader told Jared to stay behind on the trail while they went
55
00:03:45,320 --> 00:03:48,880
ahead to the summit and they would come back to get him.
56
00:03:48,880 --> 00:03:53,560
Other reports are that Jared just couldn't keep up with the troop and they moved ahead
57
00:03:53,560 --> 00:03:55,360
without him.
58
00:03:55,360 --> 00:03:59,120
Either way, Jared is left alone on the mountainside.
59
00:03:59,120 --> 00:04:04,480
Jared was last seen by a firefighter that was walking the Vivian Creek Trail.
60
00:04:04,480 --> 00:04:08,840
He saw Jared leaving the marked trail and he called out to him that it was safer to
61
00:04:08,840 --> 00:04:10,620
stay on the trail.
62
00:04:10,620 --> 00:04:14,400
The sighting happened around 5 or 6 p.m.
63
00:04:14,400 --> 00:04:16,680
Both times have been reported.
64
00:04:16,680 --> 00:04:21,120
There are reports that other hikers saw the troop leader at the summit and mentioned that
65
00:04:21,120 --> 00:04:23,240
they were worried about the boy.
66
00:04:23,240 --> 00:04:28,200
When the Scout leader couldn't locate Jared, he ends up hiking 12 miles in the dark to
67
00:04:28,200 --> 00:04:30,400
be able to report him missing.
68
00:04:30,400 --> 00:04:35,960
By the time Dennis Knight is able to report Jared is missing, darkness has already fallen
69
00:04:35,960 --> 00:04:39,240
so authorities couldn't spring into action.
70
00:04:39,240 --> 00:04:43,560
But they start making plans to begin searching at daybreak.
71
00:04:43,560 --> 00:04:49,400
At 7 a.m. the next morning, Saturday, July 20th, a massive search for Jared is launched.
72
00:04:49,400 --> 00:04:52,480
They are hopeful that he is still alive.
73
00:04:52,480 --> 00:04:57,520
While he wasn't dressed for the weather, it got down to around 50 degrees that night
74
00:04:57,520 --> 00:05:03,200
and he was only in a t-shirt, but searchers believe that he did have some water with him
75
00:05:03,200 --> 00:05:06,200
and that they'll be able to locate him.
76
00:05:06,200 --> 00:05:10,880
It's believed that he had about two quarts of water in a canteen.
77
00:05:10,880 --> 00:05:14,560
Searchers have to take their time due to the steep terrain.
78
00:05:14,560 --> 00:05:19,080
Police also launch helicopters to try to search for him via the air.
79
00:05:19,080 --> 00:05:23,980
However Jared's boy scout uniform would make him blend into the wilderness making it harder
80
00:05:23,980 --> 00:05:26,320
to spot from a helicopter.
81
00:05:26,320 --> 00:05:31,680
They do attempt to use thermal search from the helicopter during the day, but because
82
00:05:31,680 --> 00:05:37,840
it's the middle of July, the temperatures are so hot that surfaces are absorbing the
83
00:05:37,840 --> 00:05:41,640
heat and it's making it harder to look for Jared.
84
00:05:41,640 --> 00:05:46,720
No sign of Jared is found that first day, but searchers plan to begin at daybreak again
85
00:05:46,720 --> 00:05:48,400
the next day.
86
00:05:48,400 --> 00:05:53,480
On Sunday, July 21st, Jared has been missing since Friday.
87
00:05:53,480 --> 00:05:55,960
The search starts at dawn.
88
00:05:55,960 --> 00:06:00,280
Police and searchers are still hopeful that Jared is alive.
89
00:06:00,280 --> 00:06:02,200
On Sunday, they catch a break.
90
00:06:02,200 --> 00:06:07,560
They find a set of footprints that match the type of tennis shoes that Jared was wearing.
91
00:06:07,560 --> 00:06:13,880
They find the footprints at around the 10,000 foot elevation on the southern slope.
92
00:06:13,880 --> 00:06:19,600
San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy Doruff says, quote, they picked up a set of tracks
93
00:06:19,600 --> 00:06:22,000
that they feel pretty good about.
94
00:06:22,000 --> 00:06:26,760
That's the most positive thing we've had all day, end quote.
95
00:06:26,760 --> 00:06:31,040
Searchers follow the footprints, but again, when night falls, they have to call the search
96
00:06:31,040 --> 00:06:32,400
off.
97
00:06:32,400 --> 00:06:38,160
On Monday, July 22nd, right at dawn, searchers are back following the footprints, hoping
98
00:06:38,160 --> 00:06:40,560
that they lead to Jared.
99
00:06:40,560 --> 00:06:45,160
Searchers follow the footprints until they lead to an area of rock and shale where they
100
00:06:45,160 --> 00:06:47,040
lose the trail.
101
00:06:47,040 --> 00:06:51,720
Searchers focus on six square miles around the footprints to see if they can find any
102
00:06:51,720 --> 00:06:54,540
other sign of Jared.
103
00:06:54,540 --> 00:06:58,880
Searchers are worried that he may have fallen and hurt himself, and that's preventing him
104
00:06:58,880 --> 00:07:02,760
from either calling out to searchers or being seen.
105
00:07:02,760 --> 00:07:07,200
There are gullies and ravines in the area that are easy to fall into.
106
00:07:07,200 --> 00:07:11,680
The Boy Scouts of America also announced that they're going to look into what happened.
107
00:07:11,680 --> 00:07:18,040
Quote, obviously, we would be concerned if proper safety protocol was not in fact followed,
108
00:07:18,040 --> 00:07:19,480
end quote.
109
00:07:19,480 --> 00:07:25,400
But the scouts say that right now, their efforts are focused on finding Jared, their thought
110
00:07:25,400 --> 00:07:29,840
being, let's bring him home first, and then we'll look into what happened.
111
00:07:29,840 --> 00:07:35,560
However, as night begins to fall on Monday, the search is called off again.
112
00:07:35,560 --> 00:07:40,960
On Tuesday, July 23rd, Jared has been missing for four days now.
113
00:07:40,960 --> 00:07:45,320
Police have the scout leader come in with the rest of the scout troop to reenact the
114
00:07:45,320 --> 00:07:48,720
last moments that they saw Jared.
115
00:07:48,720 --> 00:07:51,480
Searchers are desperate to find his trail again.
116
00:07:51,480 --> 00:07:56,400
It's reported that they do find another set of footprints that could be a match.
117
00:07:56,400 --> 00:08:01,320
This time, searchers camp out next to the footprints so they can start searching right
118
00:08:01,320 --> 00:08:03,960
at dawn the next day.
119
00:08:03,960 --> 00:08:08,840
Police are also starting to look into the possibility that Jared was abducted.
120
00:08:08,840 --> 00:08:13,600
As there are no signs of him on the mountain, they can't rule out abduction, but they're
121
00:08:13,600 --> 00:08:20,120
also not finding any signs of foul play, so they keep searching on the mountain for him.
122
00:08:20,120 --> 00:08:25,680
On Wednesday, July 24th, Jared has been missing for five days.
123
00:08:25,680 --> 00:08:30,840
Right at dawn, those who camped out near the footprints start searching at daybreak.
124
00:08:30,840 --> 00:08:34,760
Marines are also joining the search as of Wednesday.
125
00:08:34,760 --> 00:08:39,680
The searchers are still optimistic, quote, the rescue teams have a good feeling about
126
00:08:39,680 --> 00:08:40,680
this.
127
00:08:40,680 --> 00:08:45,240
They aren't looking for a body, but for a live youngster, end quote.
128
00:08:45,240 --> 00:08:49,840
They believe the good weather and the abundance of fresh water would all support Jared and
129
00:08:49,840 --> 00:08:53,560
help him survive five days in the wild.
130
00:08:53,560 --> 00:08:58,400
One of the best trackers in the country arrives to try to help find Jared.
131
00:08:58,400 --> 00:09:03,260
They lead a small team of five and try to focus on finding his trail.
132
00:09:03,260 --> 00:09:08,320
The Boy Scouts also come out with preliminary results from their investigation.
133
00:09:08,320 --> 00:09:14,360
They acknowledge that the scout leader failed to follow several rules, specifically in supervision,
134
00:09:14,360 --> 00:09:17,280
pace, and equipping of hikers.
135
00:09:17,280 --> 00:09:21,960
They point out that two adults should have been on the hike, but there was only one,
136
00:09:21,960 --> 00:09:27,400
that scouts were only supposed to move as fast as their slowest hiker, but instead Jared
137
00:09:27,400 --> 00:09:33,400
was left behind, and that scouts are supposed to carry trail food and weatherproof clothing
138
00:09:33,400 --> 00:09:38,480
on all hikes, but Jared was not properly dressed for the weather.
139
00:09:38,480 --> 00:09:45,040
Additionally, the scout leader failed to file a notice that he was taking the troop on a
140
00:09:45,040 --> 00:09:46,040
hike.
141
00:09:46,040 --> 00:09:52,440
Jared's parents, Felipe and Linda, do not put any blame on the scout leader.
142
00:09:52,440 --> 00:09:54,580
They just want their son home.
143
00:09:54,580 --> 00:09:59,640
On Friday, July 26th, Jared has been missing for one week.
144
00:09:59,640 --> 00:10:02,440
His parents speak to the local news.
145
00:10:02,440 --> 00:10:08,000
His mother Linda says, quote, There are times when I ask God, should we still be hoping?
146
00:10:08,000 --> 00:10:12,280
I have thought of all the things that might have happened, but I have faith in God and
147
00:10:12,280 --> 00:10:13,280
in Jared.
148
00:10:13,280 --> 00:10:15,120
I know he is alive.
149
00:10:15,120 --> 00:10:16,120
End quote.
150
00:10:16,120 --> 00:10:20,240
Again, searchers remain optimistic that Jared is still alive.
151
00:10:20,240 --> 00:10:24,560
Quote, The probability of survival is very high.
152
00:10:24,560 --> 00:10:28,480
He's described as having a good heart and he's not a quitter.
153
00:10:28,480 --> 00:10:29,800
End quote.
154
00:10:29,800 --> 00:10:33,120
More volunteers come out over the weekend to help search.
155
00:10:33,120 --> 00:10:36,560
Hundreds of people take to the mountain to look for Jared.
156
00:10:36,560 --> 00:10:41,960
And on Saturday, July 27th, Jared's been missing for eight days.
157
00:10:41,960 --> 00:10:43,960
There's a break in the case.
158
00:10:43,960 --> 00:10:50,320
They find a camera that belongs to Jared just 45 feet off of the Vivian Creek Trail, near
159
00:10:50,320 --> 00:10:52,760
where he was last seen.
160
00:10:52,760 --> 00:10:57,300
It's reported that the camera was found while following footprints that were believed to
161
00:10:57,300 --> 00:10:59,380
belong to Jared.
162
00:10:59,380 --> 00:11:05,320
Under the camera are some food wrappers, a wrapper from beef jerky and one from a fruit
163
00:11:05,320 --> 00:11:06,800
snack.
164
00:11:06,800 --> 00:11:11,040
It was reported that the items, the wrappers and the camera, were found tucked under a
165
00:11:11,040 --> 00:11:12,800
bush.
166
00:11:12,800 --> 00:11:18,760
Police say, quote, The wrappers, which were probably discarded the first day he was lost,
167
00:11:18,760 --> 00:11:22,880
give us a direction of travel and we hope we'll find him Monday.
168
00:11:22,880 --> 00:11:25,200
We aren't going to just quit looking.
169
00:11:25,200 --> 00:11:27,320
We have somebody's baby out here.
170
00:11:27,320 --> 00:11:29,040
End quote.
171
00:11:29,040 --> 00:11:32,680
Police are able to develop the film from the camera.
172
00:11:32,680 --> 00:11:37,000
Police believe that the camera was dropped on the first or second day that he went missing.
173
00:11:37,000 --> 00:11:43,120
There are 12 photos altogether and only one photo that police believe that Jared took
174
00:11:43,120 --> 00:11:45,440
after he went missing.
175
00:11:45,440 --> 00:11:52,520
Of the 12 photos, 11 of them are of landscapes that would have been seen along the hike.
176
00:11:52,520 --> 00:11:56,480
The last photo was a close up of Jared's face.
177
00:11:56,480 --> 00:12:00,480
It only shows his eyes, eyebrows and nose.
178
00:12:00,480 --> 00:12:06,600
It appears that Jared did take the picture himself at night and the flash was used.
179
00:12:06,600 --> 00:12:09,920
The background is not captured in the photo.
180
00:12:09,920 --> 00:12:14,640
Searchers focus around the area where the camera was found, but again, there is no additional
181
00:12:14,640 --> 00:12:16,600
sign of Jared.
182
00:12:16,600 --> 00:12:23,480
On Monday, July 29th, Jared's mother Linda rides in a helicopter around the search area
183
00:12:23,480 --> 00:12:29,560
talking on a loudspeaker to Jared, telling him to come out from his hiding spot, that
184
00:12:29,560 --> 00:12:33,680
he doesn't need to be afraid of these people and that they're here to help, that he's
185
00:12:33,680 --> 00:12:36,040
not in trouble.
186
00:12:36,040 --> 00:12:39,240
And still, nobody can find Jared.
187
00:12:39,240 --> 00:12:45,080
The search for Jared continues for days, starting near the first light of the day and then getting
188
00:12:45,080 --> 00:12:48,760
called off only when it was too dark to search anymore.
189
00:12:48,760 --> 00:12:56,600
Finally, after Jared had been missing for 17 days, on Sunday, August 4th, police announce
190
00:12:56,600 --> 00:13:01,720
that there is 0% chance that Jared would be found alive at this point and the search is
191
00:13:01,720 --> 00:13:04,480
scaled way back.
192
00:13:04,480 --> 00:13:09,920
Authorities say, quote, as we've said throughout the entire search, when the probability of
193
00:13:09,920 --> 00:13:15,800
survival reaches far below zero and the risk of injury to our people becomes substantially
194
00:13:15,800 --> 00:13:19,240
high, the search will be scaled back.
195
00:13:19,240 --> 00:13:25,080
We believe we reached the zeroing point a few days ago, end quote.
196
00:13:25,080 --> 00:13:31,520
Overall, nearly 16 different police and search and rescue organizations came out to help
197
00:13:31,520 --> 00:13:33,760
assist in the search.
198
00:13:33,760 --> 00:13:40,440
Expert trackers and around 200 search and rescue professionals assisted in the search.
199
00:13:40,440 --> 00:13:46,400
During the search, they found a wallet that someone had lost over a year ago, a microwave
200
00:13:46,400 --> 00:13:53,520
oven, and a plot of marijuana plants with an intricate irrigation system in place.
201
00:13:53,520 --> 00:13:56,000
But they never found Jared.
202
00:13:56,000 --> 00:14:02,200
At this point in 1991, it was the largest search in the region's history.
203
00:14:02,200 --> 00:14:04,760
Jared's family refuses to give up hope.
204
00:14:04,760 --> 00:14:09,400
They ask the governor to revive the full scale search for their son.
205
00:14:09,400 --> 00:14:13,960
The governor's office responds with, quote, the sheriff's department makes the judgment
206
00:14:13,960 --> 00:14:18,840
call as to whether the search would produce any tangible results, but we'll talk to
207
00:14:18,840 --> 00:14:23,880
anybody they want us to talk to to see what can be done, end quote.
208
00:14:23,880 --> 00:14:29,760
A full scale search is never revived, but searchers keep going back looking for Jared,
209
00:14:29,760 --> 00:14:32,720
just on a much smaller scale.
210
00:14:32,720 --> 00:14:39,520
On September 9th, 1991, so it's been about six weeks since Jared vanished, and his family
211
00:14:39,520 --> 00:14:44,200
acknowledges that he likely isn't going to be coming home, and they hold a memorial
212
00:14:44,200 --> 00:14:46,480
service for him.
213
00:14:46,480 --> 00:14:52,320
Over 500 people attend the service to pay respect to Jared's life.
214
00:14:52,320 --> 00:14:56,600
At the service, Jared's uncle hovered in the doorway.
215
00:14:56,600 --> 00:15:02,960
He refused to step foot into the church and later told an elder, quote, to the day I die,
216
00:15:02,960 --> 00:15:08,240
I'll believe that this church and the Boy Scouts of America are responsible for my nephew's
217
00:15:08,240 --> 00:15:11,360
death, end quote.
218
00:15:11,360 --> 00:15:16,800
But that is all we know about the disappearance of Jared Negrete.
219
00:15:16,800 --> 00:15:23,760
So if you know anything about the disappearance of Jared Negrete in July of 1991, or his whereabouts
220
00:15:23,760 --> 00:15:33,440
today, please call the San Bernardino County Sheriff at 909-387-2978.
221
00:15:33,440 --> 00:15:36,320
So that is the case of Jared Negrete.
222
00:15:36,320 --> 00:15:44,040
I was very interested in, obviously, the case as a whole, but the landscape you were speaking
223
00:15:44,040 --> 00:15:54,080
about in particular, the San Bernardino and St. Gorgonio Mountain is a place that I lived
224
00:15:54,080 --> 00:15:56,080
near for a time in my life.
225
00:15:56,080 --> 00:16:00,000
I lived in Santa Monica, California at one point in my life.
226
00:16:00,000 --> 00:16:07,000
Even though I'm a midwesterner, I am relatively familiar with this landscape, environment,
227
00:16:07,000 --> 00:16:12,320
vegetation, the animals that are in these kinds of mountains.
228
00:16:12,320 --> 00:16:21,980
So I was kind of taken by the story in an investigative sense right up until the very
229
00:16:21,980 --> 00:16:23,720
end.
230
00:16:23,720 --> 00:16:31,400
And hearing that statement from his uncle, I could really just feel the familial and
231
00:16:31,400 --> 00:16:38,880
community impact that this lost boy had.
232
00:16:38,880 --> 00:16:42,800
And it's heartbreaking because this was the 90s.
233
00:16:42,800 --> 00:16:49,880
And granted, that's—I hate saying it out loud—a while ago now, it's not necessarily
234
00:16:49,880 --> 00:16:53,360
of a time where this case was unsolvable.
235
00:16:53,360 --> 00:16:54,360
No.
236
00:16:54,360 --> 00:17:01,480
This case, it felt like it was right in their hands, and then it slipped through.
237
00:17:01,480 --> 00:17:03,400
It's really disappointing.
238
00:17:03,400 --> 00:17:09,600
And like you said, the anger that can really be felt at the loss of this young man, the
239
00:17:09,600 --> 00:17:15,200
sense of grief that must be felt to not know where he is or what happened to him, that
240
00:17:15,200 --> 00:17:17,000
can deeply be felt here.
241
00:17:17,000 --> 00:17:20,400
And I feel it so much for the family.
242
00:17:20,400 --> 00:17:30,360
While I don't think that there is any tie or relation to Joseph D'Angelo, aka the Golden
243
00:17:30,360 --> 00:17:40,400
State Killer, he did have two victims in San Bernardino, and it kind of was an area that
244
00:17:40,400 --> 00:17:45,840
he used as his stomping and murdering grounds.
245
00:17:45,840 --> 00:17:53,480
Not necessarily hiking areas, but I do think it's just kind of worth mentioning that Southern
246
00:17:53,480 --> 00:18:01,720
California is a prolific spot or historically has been a prolific spot for serial killers.
247
00:18:01,720 --> 00:18:02,720
Yeah.
248
00:18:02,720 --> 00:18:10,960
Unfortunately, I don't know how much they looked into the abduction angle here.
249
00:18:10,960 --> 00:18:18,880
But there are a lot of, you know, internet forums, comment sections, all of that, where
250
00:18:18,880 --> 00:18:24,240
people do talk about the possibility that Jared was abducted by somebody, that there
251
00:18:24,240 --> 00:18:28,280
were nefarious characters living in this area, people in the woods.
252
00:18:28,280 --> 00:18:31,280
So that's all I think on the table.
253
00:18:31,280 --> 00:18:36,920
And we don't really know to the depth that police investigated that to rule it out because
254
00:18:36,920 --> 00:18:44,080
ultimately hundreds, if not thousands of people searched this mountain for a young man and
255
00:18:44,080 --> 00:18:46,120
he was not found.
256
00:18:46,120 --> 00:18:51,960
Which seems really remarkable to me when you consider small things that they did end up
257
00:18:51,960 --> 00:18:52,960
finding.
258
00:18:52,960 --> 00:18:58,680
Again, about the landscape of San Bernardino, the San Bernardino Mountains, the San Gorgonio
259
00:18:58,680 --> 00:19:01,800
Mountain, which is also known as Old Greyback Mountain.
260
00:19:01,800 --> 00:19:04,680
That's how I was introduced to it.
261
00:19:04,680 --> 00:19:06,180
It is so vast.
262
00:19:06,180 --> 00:19:11,880
And when you look at Southern California on a map, when you even look at the San Bernardino
263
00:19:11,880 --> 00:19:19,280
Mountains on a map, that area, even if you open up the scope just a little bit, it almost
264
00:19:19,280 --> 00:19:22,860
looks like half of Southern California.
265
00:19:22,860 --> 00:19:29,020
And when you compare that landscape to, you know, smaller states next door, on a map,
266
00:19:29,020 --> 00:19:31,560
it can look almost as big as its own state.
267
00:19:31,560 --> 00:19:40,920
So I do think it's interesting that they found anything because the area is so large, but
268
00:19:40,920 --> 00:19:47,520
it also makes sense to me that they did because they were looking for something so specific.
269
00:19:47,520 --> 00:19:51,480
I'm really glad you have that perspective because it's so hard for me to imagine.
270
00:19:51,480 --> 00:19:55,120
I grew up in the Midwest and I've lived in the Midwest my whole life.
271
00:19:55,120 --> 00:19:57,360
So mountains are really foreign to me.
272
00:19:57,360 --> 00:20:03,040
So for me, it feels like thousands of people searching this area, they're finding trails,
273
00:20:03,040 --> 00:20:08,840
they found his camera, they found a wallet somebody had lost a year ago, but they couldn't
274
00:20:08,840 --> 00:20:12,280
find this boy, like how does that happen?
275
00:20:12,280 --> 00:20:16,920
But it makes a lot of sense, like you describing the vastness of it.
276
00:20:16,920 --> 00:20:25,320
That's where I think it is absurd that there was a split from this boy, because that landscape
277
00:20:25,320 --> 00:20:28,200
is massive.
278
00:20:28,200 --> 00:20:34,920
And the elevation changes so much from spot to spot.
279
00:20:34,920 --> 00:20:42,000
I did write down like, did this boy have any skills or survival skills?
280
00:20:42,000 --> 00:20:49,960
And I think his footprints kind of speak for himself because he did survive.
281
00:20:49,960 --> 00:20:56,300
If he walked that far, it meant that he did it in the daytime because you cannot hike
282
00:20:56,300 --> 00:20:58,740
those areas at night.
283
00:20:58,740 --> 00:21:04,840
And I imagine his flashlight, if he had one, was relatively small and the lighting capabilities
284
00:21:04,840 --> 00:21:09,780
of flashlights back in the 90s are nothing close to what they are now.
285
00:21:09,780 --> 00:21:15,080
So the fact that he did it says to me that he fought to survive out there for quite a
286
00:21:15,080 --> 00:21:16,080
while.
287
00:21:16,080 --> 00:21:24,880
Yeah, his footprints, from my understanding, it seems like they were going down the mountain,
288
00:21:24,880 --> 00:21:29,600
like each time they found them, that they were farther down the mountain.
289
00:21:29,600 --> 00:21:32,480
So they were trying to focus farther down.
290
00:21:32,480 --> 00:21:36,360
To me, it seemed like he was trying to get back to that Boy Scout camp.
291
00:21:36,360 --> 00:21:43,240
To your point about how absurd it is that he was left alone, like it is absurd to me.
292
00:21:43,240 --> 00:21:50,640
I am not a Boy Scout leader, but I have worked in recreational camping and the thought of
293
00:21:50,640 --> 00:21:56,400
leaving a kid who was not well known for the mountains.
294
00:21:56,400 --> 00:21:59,760
From everything I read, this was his first overnight trip.
295
00:21:59,760 --> 00:22:02,960
This was his first time doing a hike like this.
296
00:22:02,960 --> 00:22:07,800
The thought of leaving behind a child that does not have those skills and is not comfortable
297
00:22:07,800 --> 00:22:13,720
in that setting because you are trying to get to the summit, that goes against everything.
298
00:22:13,720 --> 00:22:14,720
Everything.
299
00:22:14,720 --> 00:22:17,600
And it was wildly reckless that they did that.
300
00:22:17,600 --> 00:22:24,080
Yeah, my whole body rejected the idea of that happening and it sounds like it is the same
301
00:22:24,080 --> 00:22:25,360
for you too.
302
00:22:25,360 --> 00:22:31,680
I also wrote down what was up with the leadership of this troop.
303
00:22:31,680 --> 00:22:37,600
I know you said that the parents did not point blame at the time, but I have a hard time
304
00:22:37,600 --> 00:22:40,320
reckoning with that.
305
00:22:40,320 --> 00:22:46,680
And granted, we do not have kids, we have not lost children in this way.
306
00:22:46,680 --> 00:22:51,080
I imagine you have to compartmentalize and get right with yourself in a lot of ways to
307
00:22:51,080 --> 00:22:54,400
continue to survive this kind of loss.
308
00:22:54,400 --> 00:22:59,560
But personally, I am at least frustrated on their behalf because I just, I do not really
309
00:22:59,560 --> 00:23:01,080
understand what happened there.
310
00:23:01,080 --> 00:23:05,840
Well, yeah, and the more you kind of mull it over as you are trying to fill in the blanks
311
00:23:05,840 --> 00:23:11,000
of the story, you turn back around and it is like, well, why were all these rules broken?
312
00:23:11,000 --> 00:23:16,120
Is there something nefarious bubbling under the surface that they were trying to cover
313
00:23:16,120 --> 00:23:17,120
up?
314
00:23:17,120 --> 00:23:22,440
This trip was not reported to the Boy Scout office, which is supposed to be protocol.
315
00:23:22,440 --> 00:23:27,720
So was someone just being lazy and forgetful at best?
316
00:23:27,720 --> 00:23:33,880
Or was someone being purposefully negligent at worst?
317
00:23:33,880 --> 00:23:37,880
What happened and why were these mistakes made?
318
00:23:37,880 --> 00:23:44,720
On the error of mistakes that I just want to comment on and how probably all of the
319
00:23:44,720 --> 00:23:46,920
boys were not properly dressed.
320
00:23:46,920 --> 00:23:53,200
Because of the elevation changes and this being a mountainous environment, yes, it is
321
00:23:53,200 --> 00:23:54,760
very hot during the day.
322
00:23:54,760 --> 00:23:59,600
And like you said, the temperature drops to 50 degrees.
323
00:23:59,600 --> 00:24:09,320
And as time goes on, as Southern California moves into the later seasons, past summer,
324
00:24:09,320 --> 00:24:13,840
those temperature differences are even more drastic.
325
00:24:13,840 --> 00:24:20,960
They can be 50 degrees during the day and then drop to below freezing at night.
326
00:24:20,960 --> 00:24:25,880
The weather did catch me off guard again as somebody who did not grow up in or around
327
00:24:25,880 --> 00:24:28,280
mountains that difference.
328
00:24:28,280 --> 00:24:32,520
I know that that kind of happens out in the desert, but I was surprised how drastic it
329
00:24:32,520 --> 00:24:37,740
was in the mountains as well, especially for July, which is when Jared went missing.
330
00:24:37,740 --> 00:24:43,360
And in some of the landscape photos that Jared took on the camera that was found, it does
331
00:24:43,360 --> 00:24:46,120
look like there's snow in certain spots.
332
00:24:46,120 --> 00:24:49,440
Like it, it was cold at night.
333
00:24:49,440 --> 00:24:54,680
Just to pivot a little bit, I just wanted to briefly mention the, the photo, the last
334
00:24:54,680 --> 00:24:58,480
photo of just Jared.
335
00:24:58,480 --> 00:25:01,920
We're going to have it up on our Instagram at cold and missing.
336
00:25:01,920 --> 00:25:02,920
Please go look at it.
337
00:25:02,920 --> 00:25:10,200
But it is a hauntingly captivating photo because we're trying to fill in so many blank spaces
338
00:25:10,200 --> 00:25:11,200
for me.
339
00:25:11,200 --> 00:25:14,400
I'm not looking at it, I'm like searching for what, what is he feeling?
340
00:25:14,400 --> 00:25:15,400
What is he thinking?
341
00:25:15,400 --> 00:25:17,560
What's he trying to communicate right now?
342
00:25:17,560 --> 00:25:26,720
But the picture is really devastating that this is the last moment that we have of him,
343
00:25:26,720 --> 00:25:29,440
you know, captured.
344
00:25:29,440 --> 00:25:39,360
I think the other most haunting element of this story is her son like calling out to
345
00:25:39,360 --> 00:25:42,400
the mountains for him.
346
00:25:42,400 --> 00:25:50,440
I can't really get that imagery or just echo out of my mind of what that must felt like
347
00:25:50,440 --> 00:25:57,300
for her as a mother, as a parent to like the yearning and longing of just calling out to
348
00:25:57,300 --> 00:26:03,840
like echoes of emptiness and to be filled with the possibility that he was still down
349
00:26:03,840 --> 00:26:04,840
there.
350
00:26:04,840 --> 00:26:10,600
It was quite heartbreaking and I imagine that some people in this family are still here
351
00:26:10,600 --> 00:26:11,600
with us.
352
00:26:11,600 --> 00:26:15,000
So my heart really goes out to them.
353
00:26:15,000 --> 00:26:23,880
I hope that with the fact that science has grown and changed and that there's more capabilities
354
00:26:23,880 --> 00:26:30,520
for searching for people in these types of missing cases that there are answers eventually
355
00:26:30,520 --> 00:26:36,440
and that this family has some kind of peace about what happened to this boy.
356
00:26:36,440 --> 00:26:37,440
Definitely.
357
00:26:37,440 --> 00:26:43,160
I hope that Jared comes home one way or the other and that his family is able to put him
358
00:26:43,160 --> 00:26:50,480
to rest and that they get the answers that they deserve because since 1991 that's a long
359
00:26:50,480 --> 00:26:53,920
time to go without answers.
360
00:26:53,920 --> 00:26:58,820
And you know, it's a really popular hike.
361
00:26:58,820 --> 00:27:00,880
People take to the summit a lot.
362
00:27:00,880 --> 00:27:03,320
So it's a popular route.
363
00:27:03,320 --> 00:27:06,080
There are people on that trail all the time.
364
00:27:06,080 --> 00:27:11,680
So I'm hopeful that at some point somebody will find Jared and be able to give the family
365
00:27:11,680 --> 00:27:13,680
those answers.
366
00:27:13,680 --> 00:27:21,680
Again, if you know anything about the disappearance of Jared Negrete in July of 1991, please call
367
00:27:21,680 --> 00:27:28,440
the San Bernardino County Sheriff at 909-387-2978.
368
00:27:28,440 --> 00:27:34,560
And we'll have pictures of Jared on our Instagram at Cold and Missing as well as that last photo
369
00:27:34,560 --> 00:27:39,320
from the camera roll that we were discussing in the episode that'll be on there as well.
370
00:27:39,320 --> 00:27:42,160
Again, at Cold and Missing will pop right up.
371
00:27:42,160 --> 00:27:46,080
And if we ever do need to take a week off because something unexpected happens, we'll
372
00:27:46,080 --> 00:27:51,680
always post about it there so you can stay updated with the podcast there.
373
00:27:51,680 --> 00:27:56,180
Also thank you so much to everyone who's rated and reviewed us these past few weeks.
374
00:27:56,180 --> 00:28:03,960
It's been such an honor that we're part of so many weeks and routines and just in people's
375
00:28:03,960 --> 00:28:07,400
rotation of their podcasts.
376
00:28:07,400 --> 00:28:08,400
It's incredible.
377
00:28:08,400 --> 00:28:12,880
And the fact that so many of you have taken time out of your day to rate us or leave us
378
00:28:12,880 --> 00:28:15,080
a review means the world to me.
379
00:28:15,080 --> 00:28:16,080
So thank you so much.
380
00:28:16,080 --> 00:28:20,280
If you haven't had the opportunity to do that, maybe today's the day, leave us a review.
381
00:28:20,280 --> 00:28:25,880
You can do it on Apple Podcast or our website www.coldandmissing.com.
382
00:28:25,880 --> 00:28:30,280
We have all our old episodes up there as well as transcripts.
383
00:28:30,280 --> 00:28:35,160
So if you or someone you love is hard of hearing, you can follow along with the podcast there.
384
00:28:35,160 --> 00:28:36,760
But that is all I have.
385
00:28:36,760 --> 00:28:39,040
Thank you so much for listening to Cold and Missing.
386
00:28:39,040 --> 00:28:40,640
I'm your host, Allie.
387
00:28:40,640 --> 00:28:42,400
And I'm your co-host, Eli.
388
00:28:42,400 --> 00:28:44,400
Have a good week and stay safe, y'all.
389
00:28:44,400 --> 00:28:45,400
Stay safe, y'all.
390
00:28:45,400 --> 00:28:56,080
And I'll see you next time.
391
00:28:56,080 --> 00:28:57,080
Bye.
