For 150 years, Nevada State Prison stood in Carson City, a place of confinement, violence, escape, execution and thousands of individual human stories.
In this episode of Beyond Haunted UK, Jamie visits Nevada State Prison and explores the history contained within its stone walls.
We look back at the dramatic 1871 prison escape, the unusual execution of Andriza Mircovich using a mechanical firing device, and the story of Gee Jon, who in 1924 became the first person in the United States to be executed using lethal gas.
But behind the dates, prison records and methods of execution were real people.
Prisoners lived here, worked here, formed friendships and waited for release. They quarried stone, manufactured Nevada licence plates and, remarkably, were once even permitted to gamble inside the prison's own casino, known as the Bullpen.
For others, Nevada State Prison would be the last place they ever saw.
After 150 years, the prison finally closed in 2012. The cells emptied, the officers left, and corridors that had contained generations of human activity became quiet.
But according to visitors and paranormal investigators, they didn't become completely silent.
Reports associated with Nevada State Prison include unexplained footsteps, voices, sounds and the sensation that someone else is nearby when nobody can be seen.
Are these experiences influenced by expectation, history and the unusual environment of an old prison? Or can places somehow retain something of the people and experiences that once existed within them?
In this episode, we explore both possibilities without claiming to have the answer.
Because Nevada State Prison doesn't need ghosts to make its story powerful. The history behind these walls is enough.
