The Washington Commanders are preparing for a massive Monday Night Football matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, and Sean Anderson breaks down the optimal, suboptimal and realistic outcomes for Washington. The Commanders are coming off a brutal 27-27 tie against the New York Giants, but Sean believes Washington still has a path to pulling off a massive upset in San Francisco. The optimal outcome starts with Jayden Daniels. Sean wants Daniels to finally eclipse 200 passing yards this season, with 250 yards being the dream scenario. After returning from his elbow injury against the Giants, Daniels now has an opportunity to make a major statement against one of the NFL's best teams. Sean also wants Chigoziem Okonkwo to become a consistent weapon. Okonkwo getting at least one catch in every quarter would force San Francisco's defense to account for him throughout the entire game. Sean believes Washington needs to keep its tight end involved instead of allowing the offense to move away from successful concepts. The defense also has an enormous task. Sean's optimal outcome is for Washington to force two Brock Purdy turnovers. Against a team as talented as San Francisco, those extra possessions could completely change the game. Washington also needs to turn field-goal possessions into touchdown possessions. Sean isn't advocating for reckless fourth-down decisions. Instead, he believes the Commanders have to finish drives with touchdowns when opportunities present themselves because settling for field goals against San Francisco could leave Washington playing from behind all night. The suboptimal outcomes are just as important. Washington cannot afford to come out flat after the disappointing Giants tie. A “tie hangover” would be disastrous heading into Monday night. Sean also doesn't want Brock Purdy to light up Washington's defense. San Francisco's quarterback has played extremely well this season, and Washington's defense will have its hands full trying to slow down Kyle Shanahan's offense. The Commanders also need offensive balance. Washington's rushing attack has been one of its strengths, and Sean believes the Commanders need to remain competitive on the ground while also finding success through the air. The realistic outcomes are more complicated. Ultimately, Sean sees two realistic paths for Monday night. The 49ers could win big if San Francisco successfully schemes up Washington's defense or if the Commanders come out flat. Or Washington could win a close game if Jayden Daniels plays well, the Commanders force Brock Purdy into turnovers and Washington converts its scoring opportunities into touchdowns. And can Washington pull off the upset before heading into its bye week? Sean Anderson breaks down the optimal, suboptimal and realistic outcomes for Commanders-49ers.
