SELLEST OSAST
Your MRI shows a disc problem. But is it a herniation or a bulge — and does the difference actually change anything?
The answer is yes. And in this episode, Dr. Chris Cameron explains exactly what that difference is, why it matters clinically, and what it means for how your pain is treated.
This is one of the most commonly confused topics in spinal health — and one of the most important to get right before you make any decisions about your care.
What You'll Learn in This Episode:
→ The anatomy of a spinal disc — annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus explained simply → What a bulging disc actually is — and the 'squeezed hamburger' analogy that makes it click → What a herniated disc is — and what it means when the outer layer tears → Why 52% of people with NO back pain have a bulging disc on MRI (New England Journal of Medicine) → Why a disc abnormality on imaging does not automatically mean it is causing your pain → How lumbar disc herniation drives sciatica — and what the European Spine Journal found → The encouraging research on spontaneous disc resorption (American Journal of Neuroradiology, 2017) → How decompression therapy works differently for bulging vs. herniated discs → When conservative care is appropriate — and when surgical consultation may be warranted
Conditions Discussed in This Episode: Herniated disc | Bulging disc | Disc protrusion | Disc extrusion | Disc rupture | Sciatica | Nerve root compression | Lumbar disc herniation | Disc resorption
