SELLEST OSAST
If someone has mentioned surgery as your next step for back pain — or you're losing sleep wondering if it's inevitable — this episode is for you.
In Episode 5 of The Decompression Authority Podcast, Dr. Chris Cameron gives you the honest, evidence-based answer to one of the most important questions in spinal care: Do you actually need surgery?
Not to talk you out of it if you genuinely do. But to make sure you have the full picture before making one of the most significant medical decisions of your life.
What You'll Learn in This Episode:
→ When spinal surgery IS genuinely necessary — cauda equina syndrome and progressive neurological deficits explained clearly → Why cauda equina syndrome is a medical emergency requiring immediate surgical intervention → Why the vast majority of people considering surgery are dealing with conditions that conservative care can address → The SPORT Trial (JAMA) — the most significant study in spinal surgery research and what it actually found about surgical vs. non-surgical outcomes over 2–4 years → The 2020 BMJ systematic review on lumbar discectomy — why long-term outcomes between surgery and conservative care are closer than most patients are told → Failed back surgery syndrome — what it is and why it affects 10–40% of patients who undergo lumbar surgery → Why larger herniations show the highest rates of spontaneous resorption (American Journal of Neuroradiology, 2017) → What a properly structured non-surgical protocol looks like: spinal decompression, chiropractic adjustments, laser therapy, corrective rehabilitation, and lifestyle support → The 86% significant pain reduction rate in herniated disc patients following non-surgical decompression (Surgical Technology International) → Why decompression outcomes are comparable to — and in some cases better than — surgery, without the surgical risks → How Dr. Cameron approaches the surgery conversation with every patient: exhaust conservative options first, then make an informed decision together
Conditions Discussed in This Episode: Herniated disc | Degenerative disc disease | Sciatica | Chronic low back pain | Spinal stenosis | Degenerative spondylolisthesis | Cauda equina syndrome | Failed back surgery syndrome | Disc resorption | Lumbar discectomy
