Smolin's 2006 book The Trouble with Physics criticized string theory's viability. He has made contributions to quantum gravity theory, in particular the approach known as loop quantum gravity.
#79 – Lee Smolin: Quantum Gravity and Einstein’s Unfinished Revolution
Lee Smolin is a theoretical physicist, co-inventor of loop quantum gravity, and a contributor of many interesting ideas to cosmology, quantum field theory, the foundations of quantum mechanics, theoretical biology, and the philosophy of science. He is the author of several books including one that …
Theory in Fundamental Physics: The View from the Outside
Massimo Pigliucci (City College of New York) gives a talk at the Workshop on "Why trust a Theory?" (7-9 December, 2015) titled "Theory in Fundamental Physics: The View from the Outside". Abstract: Trouble, as explicitly hinted at in the title of a recent book by Lee Smolin, has been brewing for a w…
Multiple Universes: Notes Over Time
In 2004, I was organizing notes on multiple universes and surviving singularity. I made a web page to document the idea and mark when I was developing it.
“I used the time … to organize all the notes I had on multiple universes and surviving singularity.”

Can Black Holes Create New Universes? - The Fine-Tuning Problem and Lee Smolin's Cosmological Model | Sleepy Facts About the Universe
We have always been taught that a black hole is an ending, a place where gravity becomes absolute and nothing returns. But the mathematics of general relativity suggest a more strange and wonderful possibility. The same equations that describe the collapse of a star also describe the expansion of t…
Stuart Kauffman - Why Open-Ended Evolution Has Never Happened in a Machine (Stewarding the Flame, Episode 5)
Stuart Kauffman has spent over 50 years asking a deceptively simple question: what actually makes something alive? His answer is that greater computational sophistication alone does not make AI alive.
In this installment of the Stewarding the Flame series, the pioneering complexity theorist argues …
Episode 55 - Living in a Black Hole
Send us Fan Mail
What if our universe isn't just expanding into space, but exists entirely inside a black hole? This isn't fringe speculation. Physicists Lee Smolin and Nikodem Poplawski have published peer-reviewed work suggesting every black hole spawns a new universe, and the math reflecting our…
Julian Gough — The Egg and The Rock (Infinite Loops Classics)
We're digging out some of our favorite conversations from the archive. This one is from January 2025, with Julian Gough. Enjoy. Julian Gough sums up his career as follows: "I just sit in my room and write."

Robert Wright: AI Alignment Is a Moral Problem, Not a Technical One
The real AI alignment problem is not technical. It is moral. You cannot align a superintelligence to human values if humans cannot agree on what those values are, and you cannot get that agreement without a level of global cooperation we have never managed before. Subscribe if you want science with…
