Some weekends, life doesn't ask permission. It just shows up and rearranges everything.
In this episode of the Thrive Mindset Podcast, Carrie Dahle gets real about the Mother's Day weekend that looked nothing like the one she planned — and what it taught her about staying grounded, choosing gratitude, and finding the one true thing to hold onto when everything feels uncertain. This one is coming straight from the waiting room, unfiltered and from the heart.
Because here's what the hard moments remind us: we don't do this mindset work so life stops being hard. We do it so we know how to meet whatever comes with grace, patience, and an open heart.
In this episode, you'll discover:
→ Why the unexpected always offers a split-second choice — and how to use it → What gratitude really means when you're in the middle of something scary → How to find your anchor when the waves are big → Three simple practices to get through the moments that go off script → What actually matters when everything else falls away
If life has handed you a week that wasn't part of the plan — this episode is for you.

00:00:44.960 --> 00:00:51.359
If you're ready to uplevel your life, your relationships, your success, then this is your place.
00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:53.119
Let's dive in.
00:00:59.359 --> 00:01:01.920
Welcome back to the Thrive Mindset podcast.
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.400
I'm your host, Carrie Dale, and I'm so glad that you're here with me today.
00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:15.120
I really want to start by saying that if you're listening to this and life feels messy right now, you're exactly in the right place.
00:01:15.359 --> 00:01:20.239
Because today's episode, I'm not coming from a place of having it all figured out.
00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:26.959
In fact, I'm coming from the middle of it, the real raw, unexpected middle of it.
00:01:28.239 --> 00:01:31.840
I want to tell you about my Mother's Day weekend.
00:01:32.239 --> 00:01:34.719
I had it all planned.
00:01:34.879 --> 00:01:36.560
You know how you picture something.
00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:39.760
I had this vision of Sunday morning.
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:45.040
Coffee, probably still hanging out in my pajamas for a little while.
00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:50.000
My husband sitting there just chatting with me like he normally does.
00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:55.120
My middle son and daughter-in-law coming down and hanging out with us for a little bit.
00:01:55.280 --> 00:02:02.000
And then we'd all go meet his other brothers and their significant others at brunch.
00:02:02.079 --> 00:02:03.840
And we've been looking forward to it.
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:06.719
And honestly, I was excited, right?
00:02:06.879 --> 00:02:16.319
I was excited finally to get out in the garden and get some plants and flowers in the ground and just have one of those good, happy days.
00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:19.360
Well, that is not what happened.
00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:26.560
The weekend actually started with around five o'clock on Friday.
00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:33.520
Our phones all buzzing with an emergency alert from our daughter's phone.
00:02:33.840 --> 00:02:35.039
She had been in an accident.
00:02:35.199 --> 00:02:36.800
She's out of state from us.
00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:43.439
And it was horrific.
00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:46.479
Actually, my husband didn't even hesitate for a second.
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:52.879
He just packed his bag and got in the car and took off to go make sure she was okay.
00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:59.360
And I stayed home holding my breath and holding the house together and holding on to hope.
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:03.680
And that was hard in itself, just sitting in the uncertainty of what?
00:03:03.919 --> 00:03:08.879
Waiting for updates and and you know, just worrying, right?
00:03:09.039 --> 00:03:16.719
And she ultimately, you know, it was it's amazing that she survived, to be honest.
00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:19.439
And I'm so grateful that she did.
00:03:19.680 --> 00:03:23.039
And I'm so grateful to be able to share this story today.
00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:30.319
But during during those first little bit of time, it was terrifying.
00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:43.919
So we get through her and knowing that she's alive and safe and definitely beat up and broken and has lots of metal in her body now, but she's okay.
00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:45.199
And that was hard.
00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:48.000
But then Mother's Day morning arrived.
00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:57.039
And instead of waking up to the coffee and flowers, I woke up to another one of my kids in serious pain.
00:03:57.520 --> 00:04:05.280
And we ended up in the emergency room that morning with his appendix needing to be removed.
00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:14.719
And yeah, that was crazy in itself, too, because apparently there was a lot of emergencies everywhere that weekend.
00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:18.079
And so there was no bed for him at the hospital.
00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:19.680
They had to just wait.
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:29.439
So we just sat in one ER of one hospital, waiting for them to find a bed in another hospital, and also waiting for them to find a surgeon who was available to do the surgery.
00:04:29.600 --> 00:04:35.519
And we still didn't get it all done until Monday morning when we had his appendectomy.
00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:46.879
But as crazy as all this is, and as hard as it was, here's the one thing I want you to hear because it's the most important thing.
00:04:47.120 --> 00:04:50.720
And that was everyone's gonna be okay.
00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:53.199
Both my kids are gonna be okay.
00:04:53.600 --> 00:05:10.160
And I say that not to skip past like being scared, but because that truth is my anchor in this situation, and that truth is what I kept coming back to every single time my mind wanted to spiral.
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:14.240
I just kept saying everyone is going to be okay.
00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:24.319
But sitting in the waiting room in a weekend that looked nothing like the one I had planned, I found myself with some serious choices in front of me.
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:26.240
And that's what I want to talk about.
00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:30.639
Because here's what I've come to understand about the unexpected.
00:05:31.199 --> 00:05:42.480
When it's something as big as a medical emergency or something that feels smaller but still knocks the wind out of you, there are always these moments.
00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:46.160
A split second where you feel hit, right?
00:05:46.399 --> 00:05:48.879
And then that moment where you have a choice.
00:05:49.120 --> 00:06:05.759
And you can either let the fear spiral, you can let the disappointment turn into resentment, you can start the mental math of everything that went wrong and everything you missed, and everything that isn't how it should be.
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:13.120
And honestly, that spiral is so easy to fall into, it feels almost natural to do it.
00:06:13.279 --> 00:06:19.680
Because when things go sideways, your nervous system wants to go into reaction mode.
00:06:20.720 --> 00:06:25.759
But the other choice you can make is to just stop and take a breath.
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.600
And I don't mean that in a seriously dismissive way.
00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:33.680
I'm not saying that just a breath and everything will be fine.
00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:37.680
I'm saying that the breath is the pause.
00:06:38.480 --> 00:06:45.680
It's that tiny space between what just happened and how you choose to respond.
00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:51.439
In that pause, you get to decide who you want to be in that moment.
00:06:52.160 --> 00:06:59.199
Do you want to be the version of you that's white-knuckling it through that day and counting all the things that didn't happen?
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:07.519
Or do you want to be the version of me that finds the one real true thing to hold on to?
00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:13.839
For me, in that waiting room, the true thing was that we're all together.
00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:16.399
My family was showing up for each other.
00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:20.800
We were choosing love in the middle of chaos.
00:07:21.600 --> 00:07:23.839
And that that's not nothing.
00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:26.720
That's actually everything.
00:07:27.199 --> 00:07:33.759
You know, the boys set aside their frustrations with their sister on things.
00:07:34.079 --> 00:07:38.959
Everyone showed up just to love on her and make sure that she was going to be okay.
00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:50.240
Then the boys in their own way were teasing their younger brother for having a stomachache and ruining Mother's Day, but it was all in good fun, right?
00:07:50.399 --> 00:07:53.519
It was just all everyone being loving and fun together.
00:07:53.680 --> 00:08:00.399
And then the two in the hospital were facetiming each other, asking who was going to outdo the other one.
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:08.720
I mean, it it was it was humorous and fun and and and silly, but also it made it better.
00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:17.040
And and just that love, that isn't nothing, right?
00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:18.959
That's actually everything.
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:29.600
Buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction.
00:08:29.759 --> 00:08:30.959
It's your move.
00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:32.559
It's your next chapter.
00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:36.480
And we're here to make sure that your move is remarkable.
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:42.240
We know this market inside and out, and we care deeply about helping you find more than just a house.
00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:46.159
We want you to find the place where your life truly thrives.
00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:52.159
Whether you're stepping into your first home, upgrading to something new, or starting something fresh.
00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:54.639
You deserve more than ordinary.
00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:57.519
With the Scott Lewis group, it's your moop.
00:08:57.679 --> 00:08:59.440
Let's make it remarkable.
00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:06.720
I also want to talk about gratitude for a minute because I think it gets misunderstood sometimes.
00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:17.519
Gratitude is not pretending everything is fine when it isn't, it's not slapping like a positive spin on a scary situation and calling it done.
00:09:17.679 --> 00:09:18.960
That's not gratitude.
00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:20.960
That's avoidance.
00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:23.519
And we're not here for that.
00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:27.200
But real gratitude is something different.
00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:35.200
It is a practice of looking for what is true and good, even when the circumstances are hard.
00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:41.279
It doesn't dismiss the hard, it just exists along with it.
00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:52.240
So in a weekend where I didn't get Mother's Day plans that I planned, I also had a husband who didn't think twice about dropping everything for our child.
00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:56.080
I had a son who needed me and I was there.
00:09:56.879 --> 00:10:05.840
I had a family that it loves each other so much, so fiercely, that they show up in the hard moments.
00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:13.039
I had my own capacity to sit in discomfort and not fall apart completely.
00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:16.080
And that's something to be grateful for too.
00:10:16.480 --> 00:10:18.320
You know, the brunch didn't happen.
00:10:18.639 --> 00:10:20.639
My garden didn't get planted.
00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:31.679
And I generally don't care about it right now because gratitude has always had a way of putting those things in a proper place for me.
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:45.360
Because when you practice it, not just when things are good, but especially when they're not, it becomes like an anchor and it helps you get through those big waves of life.
00:10:46.480 --> 00:10:53.120
I do want to give you something practical to take with you because I think that that's where the real work lives.
00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:58.159
So here are three things that I came back to this weekend and I want to offer to you.
00:10:58.480 --> 00:11:01.200
Number one, take a breath first.
00:11:01.759 --> 00:11:08.480
Before you start fixing, before you pick up the phone and start calling everyone you know, just pause.
00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:12.559
One real intentional breath.
00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:16.960
It sounds almost too simple to matter, but I promise you it does.
00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:20.399
Because that pause is where your power lives.
00:11:20.960 --> 00:11:25.120
You cannot think clearly from a place of panic.
00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:32.639
That breath brings you back to your body and back to the present moment and back to yourself.
00:11:33.600 --> 00:11:33.759
Okay.
00:11:34.080 --> 00:11:38.159
Number two, find one true thing.
00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:43.919
Not a list, not a whole gratitude journal entry if you don't have it in you.
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:45.840
Just one true thing.
00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:51.759
Something real that is good right now, even if everything around you is hard.
00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:59.039
One person who loves you, one moment of grace, one sign that you're not alone in this.
00:11:59.440 --> 00:12:03.279
That one true thing, use that.
00:12:03.519 --> 00:12:04.399
Hold on to.
00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:06.720
And you don't have to figure it all out.
00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:10.720
You just have to have one positive thing.
00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:15.840
Give yourself permission to feel it and then keep moving.
00:12:16.159 --> 00:12:21.279
You don't have to be okay all the time, you don't have to hold it together perfectly.
00:12:21.600 --> 00:12:26.000
You are allowed to be disappointed.
00:12:26.320 --> 00:12:29.519
You are allowed to grieve the plans that didn't happen.
00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:33.759
You're allowed to sit in a waiting room and feel scared.
00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:35.360
Feel it.
00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:37.679
Let yourself be human.
00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:43.600
And then when you're ready, choose to take the next right step.
00:12:43.759 --> 00:12:47.120
Not the perfect step, just the next step.
00:12:47.759 --> 00:12:51.120
That is what got me through this weekend in the unexpected.
00:12:51.360 --> 00:13:00.000
And it was not by avoiding it, by moving through it with as much grace and gratitude as I could gather.
00:13:00.480 --> 00:13:12.000
We spend a lot of time planning our lives, building routines, setting intentions, creating the vision for how things are gonna go.
00:13:12.240 --> 00:13:14.000
And I believe in all of that.
00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:15.519
You know I do.
00:13:16.159 --> 00:13:23.840
Intentional living is everything to me, but there's also so much that we can't simply control.
00:13:24.399 --> 00:13:34.799
And when the uncontrollable does show up, it has a way of stripping back everything to what's real, to what actually matters.
00:13:35.759 --> 00:13:43.519
It's not the brunch, it's not the garden, it's not the perfectly planned holiday or the picture perfect day, right?
00:13:44.080 --> 00:13:45.039
It's love.
00:13:45.440 --> 00:13:50.720
It's showing up, it's patience with yourself and the people around you.
00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:56.159
It's the phone call you make just to say, I'm thinking of you.
00:13:57.039 --> 00:14:00.240
It's sitting in that waiting room and holding someone's hand.
00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:04.399
It's the husband who gets into his car without hesitation.
00:14:04.639 --> 00:14:08.799
It's the family that bends without breaking.
00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:10.799
That is the life.
00:14:10.960 --> 00:14:12.480
That is what we are building.
00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:24.799
And when we do this mindset work, not a life where nothing goes wrong, a life where we know how to meet what comes with strength and grace and an open heart.
00:14:25.039 --> 00:14:32.639
So, whatever you're doing today, whatever your week has handed you, I want you to know that you have everything you need to get through it.
00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:37.759
Take a breath, find the one true thing, and keep going.
00:14:38.799 --> 00:14:42.399
I thank you for being here with me even on the next week.
00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:45.039
Actually, especially on the next week.
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:53.840
And until next time, just remember that I believe and you must like.
