This week on The Introverted Obelisk, Obie Knox takes a look at the 1948 horror-comedy classic Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, where Universal's legendary monsters discover that dealing with two bumbling baggage handlers might be more trouble than they're worth.
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play Chick Young and Wilbur Grey, two unsuspecting deliverymen who become entangled in a sinister plot involving Count Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man. Dracula has plans for the Monster, Larry Talbot is desperately trying to stop him, and poor Wilbur finds himself caught in the middle of a supernatural nightmare that nobody seems willing to believe.
We'll explore how Universal brought together its most famous monsters for a film that successfully blends genuine horror with Abbott and Costello's signature comedy. From Bela Lugosi's return as Dracula to Lon Chaney Jr.'s familiar struggle with the Wolf Man, we'll look at the performances, production history, and surprising respect the film shows its monstrous stars.
It's a celebration of classic horror, perfectly timed comedy, and the unlikely movie that helped give Universal's monsters one last memorable moment in the spotlight. After all, sometimes the scariest thing a monster can encounter is Lou Costello.
