Talented photographer Sarah learned how the body buries trauma after she went through an abortion in 2022. She lacked a support system for that difficult experience, and her family history was not conducive to sharing the burden of uncomfortable emotions.
After she terminated her pregnancy, Sarah threw herself into body building. Despite being hyper-disciplined about her food and workouts, her body was inflamed, bloated and not responding to all her efforts. She was baffled by her lack of results, and couldn’t understand why her body wasn’t cooperating.
It wasn’t until she met an older woman who had also gone through an abortion that Sarah began to realize her physical symptoms were just a mask for her inner trauma. Her sadness, anger and guilt raged inside with nowhere to go. Being able to confide in another woman who shared the same experience held the key for Sarah to recognize her trauma, to grieve, and to begin the process of healing.
As Sarah leaned into the events leading up to her decision, she realized that it was compounded trauma — mixed with self-medicating with alcohol — that led to less than ideal circumstances. As she healed, Sarah knew that overcoming the judgment of others could be transformed into a powerful message to help other people stuck on toxic cycles of shame.
Now, Sarah has taken her story of overcoming trauma and giving it a voice to the stage with her signature talk. She hopes to encourage others to come out of the shadows of shame, and to reclaim their self worth and courage.
