In this chilling twenty-seventh installment of our Jack Ruby miniseries, we step inside Cell 6F2 of the Dallas County Jail on Sunday, April 26, 1964, just six weeks after Jack Ruby was sentenced to die in the electric chair. Following a frantic, desperate suicide attempt the previous night where Ruby smashed his head into his cell wall and tried to fashion a noose, a renowned psychiatrist arrived to conduct a series of closed-door examinations. That psychiatrist was Dr. Lewis Jolyon "Jolly" West. Brought in by appeal attorney Hubert Winston Smith—who initially sought to use hypnosis and sodium pentothal to unlock Ruby's memories of the shooting—Dr. West emerged from the cell to drop a public bombshell: declaring that Jack Ruby had suffered an acute, sudden psychotic break marked by severe paranoid delusions, visual and auditory hallucinations, and a hysterical belief that his family was being dismembered and American Jews were being systematically executed in retaliation for his crime.
However, behind Dr. West's respectable academic profile lay a sinister, top-secret dual life. We explore the unsealed federal files exposing Jolly West as a chief contractor for the CIA's infamous MK Ultra program (Subproject 43). We trace his decade-long career experimenting with LSD, hypnotic trance states, and chemical interrogation techniques designed to alter memory, induce temporary insanity, and implant false recollections without a subject's knowledge. Furthermore, we confront the most enigmatic, unexplained sentence in West's official eight-page medical affidavit filed in court—where West explicitly recorded that "some material pertaining to the shooting of Oswald was obtained" during his cellblock sessions, yet bluntly noted that this critical information was being withheld and "not included in this report."
Finally, we examine the immediate, contentious aftermath inside the Dallas legal system. We detail Judge Joe B. Brown's abrupt rejection of the defense's motion to transfer Ruby to a state mental hospital, as the judge dismissed West's findings and demanded independent court-appointed physicians. We also analyze the subsequent evaluation by Dallas psychiatrist Dr. William Beavers, who confirmed Ruby's severe psychotic depression while casually dismissing the possibility of "toxic psychosis"—drug-induced insanity—on the naive assumption that a jail cell was a "protected situation." We explore the tragic, unsettling paradox of a mentally collapsing prisoner left locked in a high-security cell while the CIA's premier mind-control expert walked out the door carrying an unrevealed secret about the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.
