For nearly five decades, Gino Crognale has helped turn imagination into reality—creating unforgettable characters, creatures, wounds, transformations and monsters for some of film and television's most recognizable productions.
In Conversation 006 of Taking Notes, Gino joins Helen L. Collen for a candid, funny and surprisingly deep conversation about the artistry behind special effects makeup, his journey from Philadelphia to Hollywood, decades of creative collaboration, and what it takes to build a career with your own two hands.
From The Walking Dead and the evolution of practical effects to creativity, fear, failure, friendship and the future of handmade movie magic, Gino takes us beyond what audiences see on screen and into the mind of the artist responsible for making us believe it.
But this conversation ultimately goes somewhere bigger: What happens when you've spent a lifetime transforming other people? What does creating monsters teach you about humanity? And after decades of making unforgettable images, what does an artist hope will remain when the work is done?
Keep listening. Keep learning. And keep Taking Notes.
