00:00:03.520 --> 00:00:04.799
Well, hello again, everyone.
00:00:04.959 --> 00:00:12.400
Welcome to another episode of Solid Start, a podcast designed to get your week off to a solid start by focusing on life from God's perspective.
00:00:12.480 --> 00:00:20.480
I'm Greg Greed, life coach at Merrill Bros, and joined by my amazing and uh very popular co-host Brian Hertzog.
00:00:20.640 --> 00:00:21.600
Brian, good morning.
00:00:21.839 --> 00:00:22.399
Good morning.
00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:23.760
Happy Monday.
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:24.879
It was a good weekend.
00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:25.760
Was it?
00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:26.640
Great?
00:00:26.879 --> 00:00:27.600
Yeah, it was great.
00:00:27.839 --> 00:00:28.000
Okay.
00:00:28.239 --> 00:00:28.800
Had a good weekend.
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:30.160
It was gorgeous, wasn't it?
00:00:30.320 --> 00:00:30.879
It was beautiful.
00:00:31.039 --> 00:00:36.320
Got to clean up the garage and still don't know what to do with half of my son's stuff that's still in my garage.
00:00:36.399 --> 00:00:38.399
He doesn't have room for it where he currently lives.
00:00:38.799 --> 00:00:41.520
That's what happens when you get a married uh married guy in the family.
00:00:41.759 --> 00:00:45.840
I'm like, half of my garage is his stuff that he can't take to his apartment.
00:00:46.399 --> 00:00:47.359
So what do you do?
00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:51.759
Yeah, that uh I'm I remember we were uh we did that a couple for a couple of kids.
00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:53.600
So they just didn't have a place to put it.
00:00:53.840 --> 00:00:54.719
At some point, right?
00:00:54.880 --> 00:00:55.359
At some point.
00:00:55.679 --> 00:01:00.560
You're like, hey, either sell this stuff or do something with it.
00:01:00.880 --> 00:01:01.520
It is yours.
00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:02.640
It's yours now.
00:01:02.960 --> 00:01:03.520
Well, good.
00:01:03.679 --> 00:01:05.599
Glad you had a great uh great weekend.
00:01:05.760 --> 00:01:08.400
We have a guest this morning, so I'll I'll have you make the introduction.
00:01:08.719 --> 00:01:10.719
Yeah, this morning we're joined by Matt Mitchell.
00:01:10.799 --> 00:01:14.719
Uh he's a junior at Purdue in Ag Business.
00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:24.239
Uh he's wor he's been with us since 2023, uh doing part-time, and then just recently he did an internship with us in the manufacturing integration.
00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:24.719
Yeah.
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:26.239
It was great to have you here, Matt.
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:29.040
So welcome back and thanks for uh doing the podcast with us.
00:01:29.599 --> 00:01:30.079
Yeah, thank you.
00:01:30.159 --> 00:01:30.480
No problem.
00:01:30.879 --> 00:01:32.239
Good to uh good to have you.
00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:38.480
So last uh Monday we introduced this whole idea of making our pasture a safe place.
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:41.439
In other words, creating a place where people feel safe.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:49.040
And so I thought it would be fun to uh talk to a couple of people in the next few weeks just to say, hey, are we doing that at Merrillbros?
00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:54.719
Are we are we providing a place where the culture is good and people feel like, wow, I can fit in.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:59.599
So you were uh tell us just a little bit before you talk about your experience here.
00:01:59.760 --> 00:02:05.120
Tell us about growing up and all of that, uh about your family, who's in your family and who's a part of your tribe.
00:02:05.599 --> 00:02:11.520
Yeah, so I have a great mom and dad, um, and then I have an older sister and a younger brother.
00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:15.520
Um, yeah, so I'd say I went to Northwestern High School.
00:02:15.599 --> 00:02:17.919
Um Tigers! Woo! Woo!
00:02:18.240 --> 00:02:20.080
I went to Come on, Brian.
00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:30.879
I went to a uh smaller private school when I was in elementary, and then after the fourth grade, I went to Howard Elementary and then continued at Northwestern.
00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:33.439
Okay, great for middle school and high school.
00:02:33.599 --> 00:02:34.080
But okay.
00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:37.120
Yeah, I uh grew up Kokomo my whole life.
00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:44.080
Um went to church at first CPC and then later on we went to uh crossroads.
00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:46.240
So I've grew up in the church most of my life.
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:50.560
Okay, so faith's been an important part of your journey for your family as well as for you.
00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:51.039
Yep.
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:51.280
Yeah.
00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:59.199
So was there a turning point that you thought, hey, this is not just my parents' faith, not just my family, well, my family does, but this is who Matt is.
00:02:59.520 --> 00:03:11.840
Yeah, so I think it would have been my junior to senior year um of high school, where I uh really um gone fire for God through a uh church camp.
00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:18.479
Um but before the church camp, I got invited to a uh youth group at Crossroads from a friend.
00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:37.120
And uh then I went to that church camp following that um invitation, and I just kind of realized, you know, going to that public or the private school and then public school, um, I kind of maybe changed the way I acted or maybe the way I talked or just um wanted to fit in.
00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:42.639
And um I don't think it's bad to fit in, but I think maybe the way I was trying to go about it wasn't always the right way.
00:03:42.719 --> 00:03:42.879
Okay.
00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:49.680
And, you know, maybe things I would say I knew I wouldn't say around my my parents or um you know my grandma type of a deal.
00:03:50.080 --> 00:03:50.560
There you go.
00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:52.080
Not around grandma, Brian.
00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:52.639
Yeah.
00:03:53.120 --> 00:03:56.560
You get your mouth washed out with soap when you say all those things around grandma.
00:03:57.039 --> 00:04:08.400
So I uh I kind of decided, you know, through that camp that I really wanted to change, and you know, I was really worried about what people thought of me and like you know, like what people would think of me kind of changing.
00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:24.399
Um but you know, like I said, I grew up in church, so I I knew about the faith, but it really wasn't until that um that week uh I think it was uh that camp at that church camp that I really decided to um be on fire for God and kind of um you know make it my own faith and my own walk.
00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:25.680
How great.
00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:27.199
Well, thanks for sharing that with us.
00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:30.959
So uh help us think back to your first few days at Merrill Bros.
00:04:31.279 --> 00:04:34.720
What was it like being the new guy or the new kid on the block?
00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:40.800
And what were you most uncertain or nervous about in those first few weeks, if you can remember that?
00:04:41.199 --> 00:04:46.160
Yeah, I remember um when I had my interview, you know, my dad always told me to dress up nice.
00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:59.759
So I came in to Meh Her Brothers for his part-time parts job wearing a uh um black slacks and a white shirt, and you know, I was like, Dad, you're making me look, you know, more professional than I need to for this place.
00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:08.160
And I walked in here looking like I was trying to sell them something when um I guess myself, but um This is a biosolids business, by the way.
00:05:08.319 --> 00:05:09.600
White doesn't really work, Brian.
00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:10.480
No, no.
00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:15.759
So I uh yeah, I I was just nervous, and then um I started that following Monday.
00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:16.319
Okay.
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:23.920
And um, yeah, I think just being in high school at the time, um, having some experiences in agriculture, but not a whole lot.
00:05:24.079 --> 00:05:24.319
Right.
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:38.000
Um and not knowing exactly all what Bear Brothers does, and um knowing I'll be working with gentlemen and uh other guys and gals that will be older than me um and more experienced just because you know they're uh had more time than I have.
00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:50.959
Um I think I was just more so nervous about wanting to perform at a high standard, but because I haven't had opportunities, not being able to um know everything, you know.
00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:56.240
I I like to know a lot of things before you do stuff, and so uh asking questions was something that I really had to learn.
00:05:56.399 --> 00:05:56.639
Okay.
00:05:56.800 --> 00:06:06.480
Um but yeah, I think it was just the nervousness of my inexperience and wanting to make sure I didn't get looked down or um, you know, I wanted to make sure people wanted to give me the opportunities.
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:08.720
Yeah, and that and that was a safe place.
00:06:08.879 --> 00:06:09.120
Yeah.
00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:09.519
Yeah.
00:06:09.759 --> 00:06:20.879
Matt, what uh is there someone that you say, hey, that was the person that went out of his way to help me feel welcome, to be included, or to be comfortable even asking questions.
00:06:21.040 --> 00:06:23.279
Did you have some of those people at Merrill Bros?
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:25.680
Did we did we live out our culture?
00:06:25.839 --> 00:06:26.800
Is what I'm asking.
00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:34.800
Yeah, I'd say um the guys in the parts department really um kind of your immediate supervisor and the other people in there, okay?
00:06:35.199 --> 00:06:38.399
Yeah, um the manager that's currently there, he was my manager.
00:06:38.480 --> 00:06:52.399
Um then there's also another individual that no longer works with us, but both of them were really um helpful and um answering questions, uh, you know, making me feel uh included on things, trusting me with things after maybe they taught me it.
00:06:52.480 --> 00:07:00.720
Um they never hesitated to um re like retell me how to do things or instruct me if I had questions.
00:07:00.879 --> 00:07:02.720
They always you know had patience.
00:07:02.800 --> 00:07:20.399
Um but yeah, they they were just really welcoming and uh made me feel included, even though I maybe wasn't as um smart when it came to maybe mechanical things or just other things because I haven't had the opportunities, but you know, they took the time out of their day to make sure I um felt comfortable and was included.
00:07:20.800 --> 00:07:24.000
Can you name all two million parts that are in the parts department?
00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:26.560
Um at least two million, Brian.
00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:33.600
I think I can probably maybe like one million, but I don't know about the uh once it got over one million, it's a little tough.
00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:33.920
Yeah.
00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:37.279
I mean, Brian not having our expertise is what he's saying.
00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:38.560
Uh yeah.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:41.680
Or lack thereof, at least in my case.
00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:53.600
So, Matt, then based on your experience, um what advice would you give to somebody who's listening to this podcast about how they can help a new person to feel safe and accept it?
00:07:53.759 --> 00:08:00.639
Maybe it's at work, maybe it's somewhere else, uh, based on what you learned, what what would you say to somebody that's listening?
00:08:00.959 --> 00:08:20.319
Yeah, I think um through some things that I've been able to be a part of, as well as just my experience here at Mower Brothers, I've kind of learned that um taking the time to get to know the person and know that they're cared for really is a a a good start because um you know people want to know how they're cared for, not necessarily what you know about.
00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:20.639
Yeah.
00:08:20.800 --> 00:08:32.559
Um and so you know, when I knew that they cared about me, you know, not only did it make me feel good about myself and feel good about them, but you know, it made me um have something to look forward to coming in.
00:08:32.960 --> 00:08:38.000
And um, you could talk about more than just uh work, you can talk about it.
00:08:38.159 --> 00:08:41.440
Yeah, it wasn't just your job performance, they cared about Matt Mitchell, yeah.
00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:44.879
And they wanted to know about you and your family and all of those things.
00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:51.679
So that's I mean, that's what this developing a safe culture is all about is that first we have to get to know people.
00:08:51.840 --> 00:08:57.360
We certainly need to get a job done, um, but we do have to care about people uh along the way.
00:08:57.519 --> 00:09:04.799
So Brian, uh anything else to add on uh on that that you remembered from your first few days or weeks here?
00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:06.399
Yeah, I would say the same thing.
00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:06.799
Okay.
00:09:11.440 --> 00:09:15.039
That's right is to care for uh our folks here.
00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:23.440
And uh we literally we have a meeting right after this podcast where we're gonna go and pray and uh just talk about things that are going on.
00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:25.279
So it is a very real thing.
00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:42.159
And I'm glad you f you said you felt that because um all the way down from our executive team to our directors, managers, I mean that we pour a lot of time and effort into even training on how to care for our uh Merrill Brothers family.
00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:44.159
And uh I'm glad you you said that.
00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:49.120
Like, hey, I mean you work for some good people in the man.
00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:50.960
Yeah, yeah, I love those guys.
00:09:51.279 --> 00:10:01.919
You know, Matt, there's an interesting story in uh the book of Acts, uh the fifth book in the New Testament, where there's a guy named Barnabas who takes in uh a guy named Saul.
00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:19.679
Saul, his previous life was uh to do everything possible to uh uh to imprison and to make life difficult for people that were following Jesus, and then he comes to a shocking um transformation, and everybody's suspicious.
00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:22.320
It's like, hey, I don't want to have anything to do with him.
00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:31.840
And so in Acts 9, it says that uh nobody really believed he was a disciple, but a guy named Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles.
00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:42.879
He told them how Saul had um seen the Lord on the road and the Lord had spoken to him, and how Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Nazareth.
00:10:43.200 --> 00:10:49.120
So it was this guy named Barnabas who noticed Saul, who said, Hey, I think there's something real here.
00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:50.480
I think we can trust him.
00:10:50.799 --> 00:11:02.399
Nobody else did, and so I'm thankful that there were people here and other places where you've been that said, Hey, we care about you as a person, and we think you're valuable, and we're glad to have you a part of the team.
00:11:02.639 --> 00:11:14.879
So we are glad to have you as a part of our team and are excited for what's ahead for you, the rest of this um this year as a junior and then next year, and look forward to uh great things from Matt Mitchell.
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:21.600
So uh thanks so much for uh living out your faith uh at school and at work and wherever you go.
00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:27.279
So uh have a great uh have a great rest of your uh semester and uh a great junior year.
00:11:27.360 --> 00:11:28.399
So take care, my friend.
00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:29.840
Yeah, thanks for having me.
00:11:29.919 --> 00:11:35.679
And um, yeah, and our brothers have been good to me, so I plan to just continue to reciprocate that love that they give to me.
00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:36.879
So that's great.
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:56.159
So our challenge this week for you is kind of the Barnabas challenge, and it's really following up on what uh Matt and Brian just said is that we are going this week to say, hey, how do we notice somebody maybe who's new, somebody who who seems like they're not fitting in well, and we get to be the person that says, hey, tell me a little bit about your story.
00:11:56.320 --> 00:12:02.639
I don't I don't know you very well, and I'd love to know a little bit more about your family, about what what you love to do when you're not here.
00:12:02.799 --> 00:12:07.279
One of the questions I try to ask people, hey, what do you do when you're not when you're not at Merrill Bros?
00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:08.799
Like what do you what is it you love?
00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:14.960
And so I learned lots of things about people just by saying, hey, what do you like to do when you're not at work?
00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:28.879
So this week we're going to notice, uh, we're gonna be very conscious of reaching out, and maybe we get to open a door and help somebody to take a next step where they can feel more comfortable being a part of this incredible company.
00:12:35.759 --> 00:12:45.679
Brian, we have a lot of exciting news from uh this past weekend, some sad news, and then we're in this fourth quarter where we want to finish strong and live out this culture.
00:12:45.840 --> 00:12:48.639
So I think I'll just today have you uh have you pray for us.
00:12:48.960 --> 00:12:56.159
All right, yeah, we definitely need to pray for some of our Merrible Brothers family who have experienced loss this week for sure.
00:12:56.559 --> 00:13:00.799
Uh part of that caring piece, right, is uh lifting them up in prayer.
00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:03.200
And we want to celebrate new life too with our.
00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:05.840
Uh, let us pray.
00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:11.360
Uh Father, we just thank you for who you are and how you bless us each and every day.
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:17.679
Uh sometimes we don't even see the blessings, and so we just want to pause and give you thanks for those.
00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:24.879
Part of that blessing, God, is new life and the babies that were born this past weekend.
00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:39.200
Uh we're just so thankful for uh those lives and pray for the moms and the dads of those babies here in the Merrill Brothers family and uh exciting times, but also it can be scary times and the unknowns and uh just praying for them.
00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:58.559
Father, we've had several uh Merrill Brothers families experience uh loss over this past week, and so just pray, God, that you would comfort uh that you would just come alongside those who just maybe even asking questions why God, and uh just pray God that you would just care for them.
00:13:59.039 --> 00:14:05.120
Uh just allow your love and your grace to just fill them um during this time.
00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:24.559
This also is a is a time, God, where our company is just going through so much, and we just need we we need your guidance, we need your wisdom as we launch new products, as we have guys going all over the country, as we are continuing to uh bring in the harvest, and there's just a lot happening.
00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:47.919
There can be a lot of anxiety, but there's also a lot of excitement, and so we're just leaning on you, God, for just the guidance through all of the new opportunities that that come up and uh just all the new work that that is being put before us, and uh we just uh continue to trust you and and just give you thanks for how you have blessed us here.
00:14:48.080 --> 00:15:03.279
But I pray God that if there's anyone listening to this podcast that is just that wants to accept you or just has questions that they would reach out either to us or to someone, God, to uh just answer that little nudge that you've put on their heart.
00:15:03.840 --> 00:15:07.679
God, we thank you and we love you for all that you've done for us in Jesus' name.
00:15:08.080 --> 00:15:08.399
Amen.
00:15:08.559 --> 00:15:08.879
Amen.
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:09.360
Amen.
00:15:09.679 --> 00:15:10.480
Amen, Brian.
00:15:10.559 --> 00:15:11.919
Thank you for uh for praying.
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:19.840
So if someone does want to reach out to us so that we can pray and and be able to provide uh the next level of care, how do they get in touch with us?
00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:24.879
Just go to mirrorbros.com, click on the prayer tab at the top of the page, and you can get in touch with us that way.
00:15:25.120 --> 00:15:25.840
Okay, great.
00:15:26.080 --> 00:15:27.840
Well, Matt, again, thanks for joining us.
00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:32.559
And uh, those of you that are listening, thanks for another episode of Solid Start.
00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:39.360
Uh, we want you to keep growing, keep encouraging, and make someone feel safe uh with you this week and be included.
00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:40.879
Take care, my friends.
