Deep Dive into The Death of Death in the Death of Christ by John Owen - The Last General Argument
In this text, John Owen argues that Jesus Christ died exclusively for the elect rather than for all of humanity. He examines various biblical passages to establish a clear distinction between the seed of the woman (believers) and the seed of the serpent (reprobates). The author contends that Christ explicitly laid down His life solely for His chosen sheep and church, as demonstrated by passages limiting His intercession and love. Furthermore, Owen reasons that the infallible effects of Christ's sacrifice, such as redemption and justification, are intended strictly for those given to Him by the Father. Ultimately, the writing asserts that a universal ransom contradicts scripture because Christ's suffering successfully guarantees salvation only for His appointed people.
