Packers Total Access: 🏈 Caleb Williams vs. The Media? Why The Bears Are Officially In Crisis! Bears vs. Falcons Preview!
The most fascinating and revealing Thursday press conference any NFL franchise quarterback has delivered in the entire 2026 season happened in Lake Forest yesterday — and Caleb Williams’ media session was every bit as combustible as the Bears’ 3-2 record and their upcoming must-win Week 6 game in Atlanta against the Falcons! Williams spoke to reporters Thursday for the first time since his Week 2 hamstring injury — and when asked about the severity of the Grade 2 strain, he shut the question down with the most direct and dismissive individual response of the entire media cycle: “Because it’s not deserving.” When the reporter pressed him — “Why?” — Williams responded: “Just not deserving. Next question.” He also said directly: “Before you start asking, I do not know if I’m playing yet.” And he defended his emotional reaction to the injury — the crying on the cart that generated widespread ridicule nationally — by saying “I’m always going to show emotion.” But despite the media confrontation, Ian Rapoport reported Thursday evening that Williams was a FULL PARTICIPANT at practice and is “likely to return Sunday barring a setback” against the Falcons — with the Bears desperately needing him back after Tyson Bagent posted a 32.9 PFF grade against the Packers, the lowest passer rating by a starting Bears quarterback since Caleb Hanie’s 23.8 in 2011. The Bears are officially in crisis without Caleb Williams. The question is whether he can save them in Atlanta.
In this complete Caleb Williams vs. media breakdown and full Bears-in-crisis and Bears vs. Falcons preview, we dive into:
- The “Not Deserving” Press Conference — What It Reveals About Williams: Williams’ decision to shut down the injury severity question is a direct response to what he perceives as weeks of false reporting — the initial Grade 1 misreport that fueled ridicule about his emotional reaction on the cart, followed by the upgraded Grade 2 diagnosis that kept him out three games. He called the ridiculing media coverage “not deserving” of clarification — which is the individual self-protective response of a 24-year-old franchise quarterback who was publicly mocked for showing emotion during an injury that turned out to be significantly more serious than the reporters who mocked him initially reported. The Chicago Sun-Times called it “one of the strangest days of Caleb Williams’ time as Bears quarterback.” What it actually is: a player drawing an individual boundary between himself and a media ecosystem that failed him in Week 2 — and refusing to reward false reporting with clarifying facts. Whether you agree with his approach or not, the individual logic is completely coherent.
- Williams Likely To Return Sunday — The Full Rapoport Update: Rapoport reported Thursday evening: “Caleb Williams, who has missed the last three games with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, was not only back at practice, but was a full participant, indicating that he is likely to return Sunday barring a setback.” Williams wore a black sleeve on his right leg during the open portion of practice, went through individual drills, looked agile working on pocket footwork, and threw on the run. He still needs to pass tests before being officially cleared — and said directly he does not know yet if he’s playing — but full participation after three weeks of nothing is the individual health signal the Bears have been waiting for all October. The Bears are a completely different team with Williams under center: 407 passing yards, two passing TDs, two rushing TDs, and a win in Week 1 against the Vikings before the injury.
- Why The Bears Are Officially In Crisis — The Bagent Numbers: Bagent finished the Packers game with a 32.9 PFF grade — the five worst PFF grades for Bears offensive players on Sunday were Bagent (32.9), Keenum (35.4), Colston Loveland (48.6), Kalif Raymond (50.6), and Rome Odunze (54.1). His adjusted game score was -10.20 — one of the five worst individual game grades by any quarterback in the entire 2026 NFL season. His passer rating of 27.4 was the lowest by a starting Bears QB since Caleb Hanie’s 23.8 in Week 13 of 2011. He now has nine career interceptions against three touchdowns in regular-season starts. Bleacher Nation said it directly: “I don’t want to hear about Tyson Bagent being a viable quarterback option for this team again.” The Bears went 2-1 without Williams — but that record was built against the Jets (with Case Keenum), Eagles (Keenum again), and Jets (Bagent). The Packers were the first genuinely elite defensive matchup, and the result was historically bad.
- The Bears vs. Falcons Preview — Why This Game Is A Must-Win: The Bears are 3-2, in last place in the NFC North after the Packers’ 31-7 win, and heading to Atlanta to face a Falcons team that beat them 35-14 at Lambeau Field in Week 3 — a game that handed the Packers their worst home loss of the LaFleur era and exposed every individual offensive weakness before the OL renovation. Michael Penix Jr. is the starting QB for Atlanta, Bijan Robinson is the league’s most physically dominant individual running back at this point in the season, and the Falcons defense that held the Packers to 17 rushing yards in Week 3 is the first genuine defensive test for a Bears offense that may be getting its franchise quarterback back. If Williams returns and plays in Atlanta, the Bears’ crisis is manageable. If Williams cannot go and Bagent starts again, the Bears could be looking at a 3-3 record heading into the NFC North stretch.
- The Full Friday Picture — Why This Matters For The Packers: The Packers are 3-2 and playing Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys while the Bears play the Falcons on Sunday afternoon. A Bears loss in Atlanta and a Packers win over Dallas would put Green Bay at 4-2 — tied with or ahead of every other NFC North team — entering the second-half stretch. The individual rivalry stakes extend beyond Sunday’s two games: the Bears-Packers rematch is on Christmas Day at Soldier Field, and the NFC North title race is defined by what happens across the next eight weeks. Caleb Williams either comes back Sunday or the Bears fall to 3-3. Jordan Love plays Sunday Night Football against Dak Prescott. The NFC North is wide open. Go Pack Go!
