Scottish football is struggling on the European stage — but why?
On the latest episode of Off The Underside, Jamie, Corrie and Davie take a deep dive into the recent European struggles of Celtic, Rangers and Hearts, and ask whether Scottish clubs need to rethink how they operate both on and off the pitch.
They discuss Rangers’ transfer business and the pressure on Derek McInnes, the lack of squad depth and quality across the league, and whether Scottish clubs are simply failing to get enough from the resources available to them.
They also look at one of the biggest issues facing the Scottish game: youth development. Should clubs stop constantly spending money on ready-made players and instead give young Scottish talent a genuine opportunity? We look at clubs such as Barcelona and Ajax as examples of what can be achieved when youth players are trusted.
Financial limitations will always play a part, but is there also a mentality problem within Scottish football that needs to be addressed?
With fans increasingly frustrated and pressure building on club boards, we ask what needs to change if Scottish football is ever going to close the gap and compete more consistently in Europe.
