Gaming has been the R&D engine of every major technology shift for the past 25–30 years. In this episode of Interconnected, hosts Shaneil Lafayette (Senior Product Marketing Manager, Equinix) and Thomas Gould (Senior Manager, Equinix) sit down with Royal O’Brien, CEO of Expanxia, and Wesley Kuo, CEO of Ubitus, to unpack how gaming evolved far beyond entertainment to become the proving ground for scalable compute, intelligent networks, and real-time digital experiences.
From cloud and edge rendering to latency optimization and AI-driven pipelines, discover how the systems perfected in multiplayer worlds now underpin the next generation of connected applications.
Key points:
- Gaming has been the testing ground for graphics rendering, distributed systems, and real-time internet performance.
- Cloud and edge rendering reduce hardware limits and expand access.
- Logical routing can outperform geographic proximity for latency.
- Distributed compute zones support fairness and synchronization at scale.
- Player token identity enables rapid reconnection and continuity.
- AI is becoming the next game engine across creation, QA, and world simulation.
