This was an episode of the podcast Drumming Up Conversation where hosts Justin and Andrea Wood interviewed David Deane Haskell, a drummer and writer currently living in Japan. David explained how he discovered the podcast through AI assistance using Claude Code, and shared his unique background starting with marching drums in competitive groups like the Blue Devils, followed by 10 years performing at Tokyo Disneyland, and recent coaching clinics in Indonesia. The conversation covered David's musical influences including Queensryche, Metallica, and Van Halen, his decision to pursue marching drums over drum set, and his experiences with orchestral percussion including playing Handel's Messiah. The hosts also discussed their own drumming backgrounds and experiences, with Justin having played since age 6, while Andrea had wanted to play drums in school but never pursued it. The discussion touched on various topics including concert experiences, the cost of live music in different countries, and the challenges of apartment living while playing drums. Check out everything David is up to including the newly released audiobook version of The Wounded Angels (Read by the author) at the link below:
