I don't know how this works, but yeah, let's check it out, man.
00:00:13.201 --> 00:00:14.945
Welcome back to the Old Grappler.
00:00:14.945 --> 00:00:16.768
My guest today is Tony.
00:00:16.768 --> 00:00:25.413
I'll let you introduce yourself when you train or hear at your studio what your studio name is Beltrank.
00:00:25.592 --> 00:00:26.335
Yeah, yeah.
00:00:26.335 --> 00:00:29.423
First of all, welcome, jose.
00:00:29.423 --> 00:00:31.728
I really appreciate you guys coming down, jesse, as well.
00:00:31.728 --> 00:00:32.990
I'm Tony Cato.
00:00:32.990 --> 00:00:40.000
I am the head black belt here at Sensei Studio headquarters in Modesto, california.
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:47.171
We have about maybe 100 or so, 110 kids, maybe about the same in adults, 150.
00:00:47.171 --> 00:00:48.774
We're only less than three years old.
00:00:48.774 --> 00:00:51.319
Our three year anniversary comes up here in November.
00:00:51.319 --> 00:00:52.000
I hope you can come.
00:00:52.860 --> 00:00:56.826
That's what Mike was saying, yeah 11-11 is our anniversary.
00:00:57.148 --> 00:00:58.409
It'll be our three year anniversary.
00:00:58.409 --> 00:01:05.000
We're currently under Coyoteira CTA Really wonderful, amazing group out there, based out of San Jose.
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:13.912
It's only for the people that don't know it's only about two hours less than two by hour and a half from here and I'm a first degree black belt.
00:01:13.912 --> 00:01:24.528
I'm doing my second here, coming up pretty soon, and I started originally back in the 90s Half, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Mountain View, California, a long time ago, 1993.
00:01:24.528 --> 00:01:35.165
But just like many of us that started way back in the day, life happened Right and eventually training for a little bit.
00:01:35.165 --> 00:01:36.486
I developed some tumors.
00:01:36.486 --> 00:01:37.608
I broke my collarbone.
00:01:37.608 --> 00:01:39.269
They did some X-rays.
00:01:39.269 --> 00:01:51.206
They found tumors in my brain, my cerebellum, spinal cord and my chest and had to take a long stay away from Jiu-Jitsu, but eventually made my way back, started all over, had to get my motor skills back.
00:01:51.206 --> 00:01:58.575
You might have seen from some of the videos on my Instagram I had to learn how to walk and talk again back in 2008.
00:01:59.200 --> 00:02:06.647
2012, I had the second part of the three-part surgery, which was the tumors in my spinal cord.
00:02:06.647 --> 00:02:13.115
So I had to have C3, 4, 5, and 6 removed, Cadaver bones put in and a metal plate right in this incision.
00:02:13.115 --> 00:02:14.536
Here you saw the big scar in the back of my head.
00:02:14.536 --> 00:02:15.800
Yeah, that was 2008.
00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:18.104
This one was 2012.
00:02:18.104 --> 00:02:21.307
And I'm praying now like not just turned 50.
00:02:21.307 --> 00:02:27.635
I told myself I was going to wait for the rest of the last surgery to get the tumors out of my chest to a 50.
00:02:27.635 --> 00:02:36.775
So my focus here has been to develop other trainers to kind of hold the reins while I go into the next phase of my life, which is taking care of the rest of it.
00:02:36.775 --> 00:02:40.629
But it's been a beautiful journey so far.
00:02:40.629 --> 00:02:42.545
Yeah, you have a wonderful place.
00:02:42.545 --> 00:02:43.805
Hey, thank you, man.
00:02:43.805 --> 00:02:44.429
I appreciate that.
00:02:44.429 --> 00:02:45.033
That means a lot.
00:02:45.235 --> 00:02:46.000
Really means a lot to me.
00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:48.526
Yeah, this second time that I've been here.
00:02:48.526 --> 00:02:51.572
Like I said, we came with Craig.
00:02:52.781 --> 00:02:54.484
Yeah, for his memorial.
00:02:54.484 --> 00:02:57.950
That was a tough loss for us, Very tough loss for us.
00:02:57.950 --> 00:02:59.834
Him and I have been friends many years.
00:02:59.834 --> 00:03:15.786
You'll develop these relationships with people that and it's a little bit of a sweet and sour relationship with people that you kind of train daily to beat each other up and then over the years you're kind of all banged up.
00:03:15.786 --> 00:03:18.611
You wake up one day and your 50 and that was, I think, 48.
00:03:18.611 --> 00:03:25.437
And we both shared the same heart mentality of serving the youth, especially on this part.
00:03:25.437 --> 00:03:29.610
This side of Modesto, Right on the other side of the freeway, is one of some of the roughest parts of Modesto.
00:03:30.200 --> 00:03:36.885
So reaching out to the kids right there, the freeway is right there on the other side, the west side, we have a lot of youth that we want to reach out to.
00:03:36.885 --> 00:03:41.000
So, even though he's passed, we started an academic scholarship in his name.
00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:43.645
You saw that that day.
00:03:43.645 --> 00:03:52.870
We've already given out, I think, seven scholarships, something like that, 14 in total, 14 kind of like in general youth in the area.
00:03:52.870 --> 00:03:55.574
But we're going to continue to do this.
00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:56.542
It's a good thing.
00:03:56.542 --> 00:03:57.185
Thank you, man.
00:03:57.185 --> 00:03:57.847
I appreciate it.
00:03:57.847 --> 00:03:58.520
It's really good.
00:03:58.520 --> 00:04:05.032
I mean, I've seen something on social media the other day like every kid deserves to train.
00:04:05.032 --> 00:04:12.489
The unfortunate part is, not every kid has the resources to train.
00:04:12.489 --> 00:04:16.274
Someone does something like what you're doing.
00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:26.980
It can be very tough and that's why, when this opportunity came up in this 6,000 square foot warehouse, I didn't know how we were going to make this happen.
00:04:26.980 --> 00:04:28.504
This is too big for me.
00:04:28.504 --> 00:04:34.000
This was at the beginning of when the first COVID restrictions started coming out and they were shutting everything down.
00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:37.187
I lost everything I had in the barbershop that we had downtown.
00:04:37.187 --> 00:04:39.793
We had to shut down and this opportunity came up.
00:04:39.793 --> 00:04:45.471
The bill was just bigger than I could ever imagine, but the owner was willing to work with us.
00:04:45.471 --> 00:04:57.565
I told him the vision and how I thought we could make a healthy contribution to the youth in this area, because even if they don't have the means to get here, maybe we could figure that piece out, but they can walk right across.
00:04:57.565 --> 00:04:59.430
They're within walking distance.
00:04:59.430 --> 00:05:00.713
How could I say no?
00:05:01.321 --> 00:05:03.651
The old grappler just awarded my blue belt.
00:05:03.651 --> 00:05:06.000
I've been coaching wrestling for about 14 years now.
00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.048
When I get in there, it is like everything just goes away.
00:05:10.048 --> 00:05:13.476
You're in there coaching on the map for Jiu-Jitsu.
00:05:13.476 --> 00:05:14.920
It's a way of therapy.
00:05:14.920 --> 00:05:19.918
The old grappler, I'm a Castro's pool service.
00:05:19.918 --> 00:05:21.365
What am I saying?
00:05:21.365 --> 00:05:23.024
Check.
00:05:23.024 --> 00:05:30.959
I'd like to say thank you to our sponsor, castro's Pool Service and Repair, phone number 209-675-5418.
00:05:30.959 --> 00:05:33.567
I am Castro's Pool Service and Repair.
00:05:33.567 --> 00:05:41.000
Thanks, so yeah, so originally you're from the Bay Area.
00:05:41.822 --> 00:05:45.771
Yeah, I was born in San Francisco, raised throughout the entire Bay Area.
00:05:45.771 --> 00:05:50.526
My mom and dad split up when I was younger.
00:05:50.526 --> 00:05:54.853
We didn't live with a lot.
00:05:54.853 --> 00:06:01.351
There were many times we were homeless, living out of a car from park to park.
00:06:01.351 --> 00:06:07.312
She worked in thrift stores and she also worked throughout Redwood City, San Carlos area cleaning motel rooms.
00:06:07.312 --> 00:06:12.026
So a lot of times I had to switch schools almost every year throughout the Bay Area.
00:06:12.026 --> 00:06:16.694
The only toys I had was whatever I could fit in a shoebox.
00:06:16.694 --> 00:06:21.387
We were in a big Lincoln Continental.
00:06:21.387 --> 00:06:24.973
It was like a 1979 Lincoln Continental, four-door, like a big boat.
00:06:24.973 --> 00:06:30.511
That was just life growing up in the Bay Area for me.
00:06:30.511 --> 00:06:43.970
Like I said, I think God blessed me with those type of experiences so that I have compassion for the kids and situations out here Born and raised throughout the Bay Area.
00:06:45.925 --> 00:06:47.980
So you said, you started training in 93?
00:06:47.980 --> 00:06:47.980
.
00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:57.745
Yeah, so my prudential who started One World Judges too, him and I grew up together and through high school we were really big on martial arts.
00:06:57.745 --> 00:06:59.829
We thought we were pretty good at it.
00:06:59.829 --> 00:07:10.814
We were in Kaji Kimbo for a while Mike, just a little bit longer than I and I want to say, like in high school, we thought we could hold our own, you know.
00:07:10.814 --> 00:07:17.533
And then one day Mike said, hey, I'm going to quit Kaji Kimbo and I'm going to go do this jujitsu thing.
00:07:17.533 --> 00:07:20.146
And back then you didn't have like now where you could just Google stuff, you know.
00:07:20.146 --> 00:07:23.711
So I said, well, what is it you want to like?
00:07:23.711 --> 00:07:24.975
Climb walls and wear a mask?
00:07:24.975 --> 00:07:25.959
I thought it was a ninja too, you know.
00:07:26.822 --> 00:07:27.884
I didn't know what jujitsu was Like.
00:07:27.884 --> 00:07:32.230
We would throw ninja stars or something like that you know, and he goes no, man, it's not like that man.
00:07:32.250 --> 00:07:33.959
There's this little guy, poise Gracie.
00:07:33.959 --> 00:07:37.773
He's a Poise Gracie is out there killing guys.
00:07:37.773 --> 00:07:40.000
And I ordered a VHS tape.
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:43.259
I want you to see it when I get out of the first UFC, you know, yes, and he goes.
00:07:43.259 --> 00:07:55.612
Anyway, he's got a cousin out this way named HALF and he's out in Mountain View, which is we were living in Fremont at the time, and he says so, I've been trying it out and you should quit and come with me.
00:07:55.612 --> 00:07:58.668
And I said well, try it out for a little bit longer and get back to me.
00:07:58.668 --> 00:07:59.704
You know, let me know how it goes.
00:07:59.744 --> 00:08:03.000
So he quit and I was still stuck at now, kaji Kimbo, pretty much.
00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:11.411
He was like my big friend, you know, my big sparring partner, yeah, so then one day he would just always ask me hey, you got to quit this, you got to come do this.
00:08:11.411 --> 00:08:15.903
So he showed me the tape and I was like bro, you want to wrap your legs around guys, man, what's wrong with you?
00:08:15.903 --> 00:08:19.000
Like I wasn't homophobic, but it was just like this is like you didn't do that kind of stuff.
00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:26.673
And during that time so this would have been the so early nineties, you know, so nine or 93.
00:08:26.673 --> 00:08:30.980
And he said man, I'm telling you right now, this is real, this is all that stuff we've been learning.
00:08:30.980 --> 00:08:35.971
Yeah, if you get the first punch, good, but someone can catch you too.
00:08:35.971 --> 00:08:37.566
What's going to happen when you go to the ground?
00:08:38.140 --> 00:08:40.778
He goes how many times have we been in fights in Fremont when we were in high school?
00:08:40.778 --> 00:08:43.616
We were in group fights being knuckleheads.
00:08:43.616 --> 00:08:45.988
He goes how many times did it get to the ground?
00:08:45.988 --> 00:08:47.687
I'm like, yeah, I get it.
00:08:47.687 --> 00:08:58.429
So I went for my first class and this 15 year old man, one round, tapped me seven times and 15 years old, literally.
00:08:58.429 --> 00:08:59.293
I went there back then.
00:08:59.293 --> 00:09:00.236
It was kick skin.
00:09:00.236 --> 00:09:04.711
They were like big bell bottom giz back in the day was that was the brand of G that they had at house back then.
00:09:04.711 --> 00:09:05.721
They had other ones too.
00:09:05.721 --> 00:09:08.490
But Dave Camaro was there.
00:09:08.490 --> 00:09:09.902
Cameron O'Roll was there.
00:09:09.902 --> 00:09:13.792
People don't know those names as much, but Cameron O'Roll beat Marcelo Garcia like twice.
00:09:14.201 --> 00:09:15.083
People won't really talk about that.
00:09:15.384 --> 00:09:15.725
To me.
00:09:15.765 --> 00:09:26.154
Marcelo is like a God to me, but there were some tough dudes in that academy during that time, but I was at the level of below this 15 year old and I was like man.
00:09:26.154 --> 00:09:27.698
It really opened my eyes.
00:09:27.698 --> 00:09:36.511
You think you're a badass until that happens, and then you realize, wow, if this kid had to fight this kid in the street he would kill me.
00:09:37.421 --> 00:09:40.331
So it was a very eye opening thing, it gives you perspective, right.
00:09:40.350 --> 00:09:41.936
Man, it really does and it's humbling.
00:09:41.936 --> 00:09:44.586
It's humbling A little bit of a rougher crowd.
00:09:44.586 --> 00:09:50.832
Back then, you know that Gracie time, during that time period, nobody kind of knew what this was really about.
00:09:50.832 --> 00:09:53.488
It was kind of like a hidden secret in this hidden gem for a while.
00:09:53.488 --> 00:09:55.687
All those guys were tough, all more tough.
00:09:55.687 --> 00:09:58.427
So I appreciate those days.
00:09:58.427 --> 00:10:01.908
I'm a different guy now, carlos Sopone, still really good friend of mine.
00:10:02.149 --> 00:10:03.916
Yes, yeah, he's been here a few times.
00:10:03.916 --> 00:10:05.000
He's been here a few times in the seminar.
00:10:05.341 --> 00:10:10.748
He was head black out over there for a while too and he's always still a dear friend of mine.
00:10:10.748 --> 00:10:12.030
He comes out here regularly.
00:10:12.030 --> 00:10:12.732
He's like a brother to me.
00:10:12.732 --> 00:10:17.187
We speak regularly but we're different people now those days are.
00:10:17.187 --> 00:10:19.000
You know, you gather what you can from it.
00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:25.952
But I think now the more gentler, more kinder side is the right way to train.
00:10:25.952 --> 00:10:26.653
You know it's not a bit.
00:10:26.653 --> 00:10:28.625
It's definitely a marathon.
00:10:29.105 --> 00:10:34.868
Yes, yeah, so you said Kaji Kembo.
00:10:35.248 --> 00:10:35.789
Kaji Kembo.
00:10:35.789 --> 00:10:37.854
Yeah, that was like the dirty form of karate back then.
00:10:37.854 --> 00:10:45.086
You know, there's a group of like guys from Hawaii that started like this grungy Kemos, like a grungy form of street karate back then.
00:10:45.086 --> 00:10:46.408
Oh yeah, we thought it was pretty cool.
00:10:46.408 --> 00:10:48.110
I mean, there's no shame on those.
00:10:48.110 --> 00:10:48.751
Those guys were good.
00:10:48.751 --> 00:10:54.366
Yeah, I was under Greg Ligera, who is a known kind of bad guy in the Bay Area.
00:10:54.366 --> 00:10:55.168
It's a poker.
00:10:55.168 --> 00:10:55.809
Oh, you did yeah.
00:10:55.809 --> 00:10:57.692
Yeah, there's not much to say.
00:10:57.692 --> 00:11:05.052
I also want to make a point to say that we shouldn't shun any other of the martial arts as well, yeah.
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:07.938
It's just we didn't do any ground stuff at that time.
00:11:07.938 --> 00:11:09.980
It was very foreign, very foreign.
00:11:09.980 --> 00:11:16.000
I think these days you go to some of these karate schools, they know to incorporate some ground, at least some, they can't deny it.
00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:22.758
But back then you were kung fu, you were kung fu, right, you were karate, you were karate.
00:11:23.520 --> 00:11:28.231
There was no like mixed martial arts didn't come until later, later, yeah, later.
00:11:28.231 --> 00:11:31.688
There wasn't no cross training and all that.
00:11:32.341 --> 00:11:33.182
So Mike was doing.
00:11:33.182 --> 00:11:36.772
I remember Mike, I was already now hooked on Jitsu.
00:11:36.772 --> 00:11:38.986
He was cross training at Kung Lee's in San Jose.
00:11:38.986 --> 00:11:46.089
He was a pretty well known kickboxer during that time, so he was getting his striking in there and Jitsu over at house.
00:11:46.089 --> 00:11:51.961
But again, like time progresses, and then I developed these health conditions and kind of took me out for a while.
00:11:51.961 --> 00:11:53.427
Yeah, yeah.
00:11:55.902 --> 00:12:03.875
So when you went through that health issue, timeframe wise, how long were you out for A year.
00:12:04.019 --> 00:12:06.126
So I was also a single father raising my boys alone.
00:12:06.126 --> 00:12:09.668
I have five boys and one girl.
00:12:09.668 --> 00:12:14.485
My oldest son, anthony, he's one of the head black belts at Maraki's down in Sokau.
00:12:14.485 --> 00:12:16.264
He was just a kid.
00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:30.950
As I was recovering from the brain surgery I put my kids back in health school, but then he had a school in Dublin and I lived in San Ramon with raising my older boys and so I put them.
00:12:30.950 --> 00:12:38.745
As soon as health took over that school in Dublin, I put them back there and health remember me from the 90s, but I just wasn't very.
00:12:38.745 --> 00:12:44.424
I was a very high risk patient still with all the other tumors, especially the ones in my spinal cord.
00:12:44.424 --> 00:12:49.912
So as much as I wanted to train, I just had to wait it out to at least I got this one done.
00:12:49.912 --> 00:13:03.192
The ones in my chest don't really bother me, but the brain one was starting to cause a paralyzation on my left side and then the one in my spinal cord was starting to really impinge the flow of brain fluid to my brain.
00:13:03.880 --> 00:13:09.183
So there's very touchy time for me, especially being a single dad, you know, trying to figure that piece out as well.
00:13:09.183 --> 00:13:15.782
It's not like again, it's not like back then I think you had like the dial up internet, but you had these.
00:13:15.782 --> 00:13:17.028
They had this place called a library.
00:13:17.028 --> 00:13:18.091
I don't know if people know what that is.
00:13:18.091 --> 00:13:19.076
It's a place with books.
00:13:19.076 --> 00:13:26.649
I don't know if people know what books are, but there's these libraries, and I used to have to go to these libraries to read books on how to raise kids, because I was trying to figure this out, you know.
00:13:26.649 --> 00:13:28.080
And then so, just, it wasn't really.
00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:31.227
You found a book on that, huh, yeah, well, I'll tell you what it was?
00:13:31.268 --> 00:13:31.528
Yeah.
00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:33.985
It was a focus on the family.
00:13:33.985 --> 00:13:42.043
That's the title of it and it was some pastor guy that wrote on the Christian side of, or Christian perspective of, raising kids.
00:13:42.043 --> 00:13:43.865
So it was a focus on the family.
00:13:43.865 --> 00:13:49.482
I forgot which volume it was, but it was specific toward families that were like, usually, single parent families.
00:13:49.482 --> 00:13:51.884
But here's the turning point.
00:13:51.884 --> 00:14:13.212
The turning point was when my oldest son now a black belt, back then white belt getting his first stripes I have a picture of it that I'll send to you Half was putting on his first stripe on his belt and it was the first time I saw this glow at the time oldest son's face.
00:14:13.212 --> 00:14:16.604
He was probably seven years old and I remember being jealous.
00:14:17.840 --> 00:14:23.778
I remember looking at that like man, if I had not of quit you know, had I oh, I was jealous in the moment that you could have been.
00:14:24.966 --> 00:14:27.077
Yeah, like I could have been the one doing that on my son, you know.
00:14:27.077 --> 00:14:31.432
So it's bittersweet, right, because now we fast forward.
00:14:31.432 --> 00:14:32.600
And then I got back into it.
00:14:32.600 --> 00:14:33.563
I moved out to Modesto.
00:14:33.563 --> 00:14:34.166
Nobody knew me.
00:14:34.166 --> 00:14:41.764
I started training under another Academy over here where nobody knew me, and I felt horrible because it's like walking you guys just walk normal.
00:14:42.240 --> 00:14:45.327
For me, after the surgeries I have to actually throw my foot forward to walk.
00:14:45.327 --> 00:14:46.471
It's different.
00:14:46.471 --> 00:14:53.163
So it's kind of like I have Android, my wife and my kids, they all have iPhones, they all want me to get an iPhone.
00:14:53.163 --> 00:14:56.489
But for me to get an iPhone today and navigate is lost.
00:14:56.489 --> 00:15:01.524
But you understand screens, you understand where Google does, you understand what YouTube does, but navigating is hard.
00:15:01.524 --> 00:15:04.383
So that's what happened after my brain surgery and spinal cord surgery.
00:15:04.383 --> 00:15:10.687
I knew what the end result was supposed to look like in these techniques, but I couldn't get there because navigating there's like new screens, you know.
00:15:10.687 --> 00:15:12.192
So it was very frustrating.
00:15:12.279 --> 00:15:29.113
But this Academy that I was with they really allowed me to learn and then allowed me to teach kids class and then I worked my way up and then eventually, on my second life in Jiu-Jitsu, was able to get my black belt and then start all of this.
00:15:29.113 --> 00:15:32.227
But here's the sweet part of the bitter part of my son getting a striper belt.
00:15:32.227 --> 00:15:36.808
I wasn't able to tie his stripe on his white belt.
00:15:36.808 --> 00:15:43.605
I worked it out with his head black belt in the LA to bring him up here as a brown belt to promote him the black belt here.
00:15:43.605 --> 00:15:47.490
So I wasn't able to tie his stripe but I was able to tie his black belt.
00:15:47.490 --> 00:15:49.384
So it came full circle for me.
00:15:50.279 --> 00:15:50.841
That was special.
00:15:51.485 --> 00:16:08.293
That was the mission, that was my driving mission was I wanted to redeem myself from the time that I had to, well, quit for a while, but at the same time I felt what my son I saw the brightness in his eyes and spirit when he got promoted.
00:16:08.293 --> 00:16:09.945
I was like every kid should have that.
00:16:09.945 --> 00:16:17.129
Every kid should have that moment, that feeling, even if it doesn't come from their parent, but just to go somewhere where they feel a sense of achievement of something real.
00:16:17.129 --> 00:16:26.524
Not something where they win a high score on saving the world 12 times on some video game and then, once they turn it off, they're back to shit again, being nobody, and then they get depressed.
00:16:26.524 --> 00:16:31.168
So here the kids, achieve something real, Right?
00:16:32.520 --> 00:16:43.232
I like that and, coming from the adult side of that, we had a stripe promotion a few weeks ago.
00:16:43.232 --> 00:16:45.442
My coach is Craig.
00:16:45.442 --> 00:16:51.846
Yes, and we're fairly new.
00:16:51.846 --> 00:16:59.390
This month is two years that he's been there, that we've had a Jiu-Jitsu program in our gym.
00:17:04.786 --> 00:17:18.070
And when it first started I don't know, we had to have been maybe six months in or so and we got a stripe, and that day I was like that's cool, right.
00:17:18.070 --> 00:17:25.105
And then later on, we just kept going and going and going and I started competing.
00:17:25.105 --> 00:17:33.009
I competed right away, but the stripes didn't mean anything to me.
00:17:33.009 --> 00:17:36.645
Right, like after that first one.
00:17:36.645 --> 00:17:53.059
I was excited for the first one, but after that I got to tournaments and I seen guys with two, three, four stripes on their belt and like it's almost like you're, given those stripes valued.
00:17:53.059 --> 00:18:03.030
They're still a person that's training, like you are, yeah, that has to go out and see if their game is going to work against you.
00:18:03.030 --> 00:18:03.672
Sure, yeah.
00:18:03.672 --> 00:18:21.699
So when I went in and I seen these guys that like seen the stripes, and then we got on the mat and actually combat, right, and I felt like the stripes didn't mean anything.
00:18:21.778 --> 00:18:36.291
After that, I was able to win a couple of tournaments, so I was like, okay, like just keep training the promotions, the stripes, whatever, though, happened, they happen, yeah, and it does, you know, yeah.
00:18:36.291 --> 00:18:43.551
So I got one stripe on the white belt and then I got promoted to blue, right, yeah.
00:18:43.551 --> 00:18:51.059
And then he did like he did stripes the other day, yeah, so we had class on Thursday night.
00:18:51.059 --> 00:18:55.320
He stripes, like all the white belts, yeah Right, like.
00:18:55.320 --> 00:19:01.278
And then he striped me, and then the next that's Saturday or Sunday.
00:19:01.298 --> 00:19:15.872
We went to a seminar up at San Lorenzo and it was me and another lady that trains with us and he asked us about the stripes and I was just like, and he's all, what is the?
00:19:15.872 --> 00:19:33.573
And I'm like coach, you know, like we've had this conversation before like after the first stripe, it doesn't really for me, I didn't really care about the stripes anymore, like it's just, it's just a signal of progress, that's it Right Time spent in progress.
00:19:33.573 --> 00:19:41.443
But I know I'm there, I know I'm putting in the time when it happens, it's going to happen, yeah, and I think that's.
00:19:41.443 --> 00:19:42.788
You still need to show up.
00:19:44.059 --> 00:19:50.807
The interesting thing that, when it comes to the mentality behind promotions, different strokes for different folks some people don't need the piece of tape, right?
00:19:51.047 --> 00:19:54.983
For little kids, that piece of tape man, it's a world Huge right.
00:19:54.983 --> 00:19:59.269
But for the adults, like I've never really been big on stripes either.
00:19:59.269 --> 00:20:05.625
My wheels over there, that shows all my different belts on the journey to black, and some of them only have two stripes or three stripes.
00:20:05.625 --> 00:20:15.286
But I always remind folks you got to remember everybody's training to get better every single day too, and everybody's learning curve is different.
00:20:15.286 --> 00:20:21.163
Everybody has different availabilities to be able to spend the amount of time that they do on the mat.
00:20:21.163 --> 00:20:24.148
What you should be doing, if you do at all.
00:20:24.250 --> 00:20:25.273
Look at the stripes on your belt.
00:20:25.273 --> 00:20:28.944
Is you now as a two stripe or three stripe?
00:20:28.944 --> 00:20:32.532
What could you have done had you have fought yourself at one stripe?
00:20:32.532 --> 00:20:35.630
There should be a substantial, substantial difference.
00:20:35.630 --> 00:20:36.644
There should be substantial growth.
00:20:36.644 --> 00:20:41.343
So if you were to take your first stripe, which meant a little something, second stripe really didn't mean anything.
00:20:41.343 --> 00:20:48.162
But if you had to fight yourself to the death, fighting the guy that was at one stripe is nine day.
00:20:48.162 --> 00:20:50.348
Between stripes Is night and day.
00:20:50.348 --> 00:21:03.042
So maybe you don't see the progress against the guy that gives you a hard time on the mat today, but if you reflect on where you were back then is nine day between stripes, because sometimes stripes is what?
00:21:03.063 --> 00:21:11.104
Every six months, or three to six months, whatever that may be, yeah, but somebody who's training two, three times a day, they might get striped up in the next belt within the same year.
00:21:11.104 --> 00:21:13.002
You just never know.
00:21:13.002 --> 00:21:18.163
So the comparison should never be you versus your teammates, it should be you versus you.
00:21:18.163 --> 00:21:23.167
And even the guys that start here after three months like, hey, I don't know, am I progressing?
00:21:23.167 --> 00:21:24.150
I feel like I'm not progressing.
00:21:24.150 --> 00:21:24.911
How long have you been here?
00:21:24.911 --> 00:21:25.792
Oh, three months.
00:21:25.792 --> 00:21:31.282
If you had to fight yourself to the death the day you walked in here for the very first time, what would you do?
00:21:31.282 --> 00:21:38.086
You're going to learn something about their personalities, because the two popular answers are this I would fuck that dude up.
00:21:38.086 --> 00:21:40.505
That's one of them.
00:21:40.987 --> 00:21:43.763
Okay, that's three months, oh fuck that dude up, right.
00:21:45.420 --> 00:21:51.847
But something will be different if you're a blue belt going to purple belt talking about what you would do had you on the day that you first walked in.
00:21:51.847 --> 00:21:57.111
Typically what happens is they say I would subdue the person and I would show them mercy.
00:21:57.111 --> 00:21:59.145
It's a different mentality.
00:21:59.145 --> 00:22:03.844
So the white belts that usually come in it's like they already have this idea it's a killer, be killed mentality, depending on them.
00:22:04.144 --> 00:22:07.605
The nature of your gym you know different gyms, different strokes for different folks.
00:22:07.605 --> 00:22:09.821
Right, I don't knock it For here.
00:22:09.821 --> 00:22:11.969
We're a very respectable, loving family group here.
00:22:11.969 --> 00:22:13.164
This is how I like it here.
00:22:13.164 --> 00:22:17.462
I've gone to gyms where the testosterone is pretty thick, right when you walk in through the doors.
00:22:17.462 --> 00:22:18.267
I don't knock it.
00:22:18.267 --> 00:22:24.326
It might be just the character of that area and they have to be that way and that's what motivates them in that area.
00:22:24.326 --> 00:22:25.540
So I don't knock it For us.
00:22:25.540 --> 00:22:26.223
It's not like that here.
00:22:26.223 --> 00:22:45.630
But I will say this over time, as you get off, maybe from the blue to purple, you should be thinking and your mentality should change where you're a little bit more merciful, this is why I get a little bit bothered when I hear comments from people saying oh, as a pro belt, you should just be beating up every blue belt.
00:22:46.080 --> 00:22:46.624
What does that mean?
00:22:46.624 --> 00:22:56.530
I have some blue belts that are really good, that could keep up, and then I have some blue belts that have no athleticism at all and they're up there in age and I have those guys too.
00:22:56.530 --> 00:23:08.972
Yeah, no, there should be a level of professionalism, but also there should be a level of where you have the right personality to know when to apply and when to not apply so much pressure.
00:23:08.972 --> 00:23:11.626
There should be a balance of that.
00:23:11.626 --> 00:23:33.463
There have to catch that mentality early, because as you're developing as a white belt, you're really just trying to figure it all out and you're just trying to survive, and so you're so wrapped up in that you're not thinking in terms of well, I would control the situation and maybe talk to the guy Like I tell my guys here, like, if you're going to bar fight out here, I would hope that you wouldn't do something to get yourself put in jail for a long time, if not forever.
00:23:33.463 --> 00:23:37.548
I would hope that you would control the situation and then tell the guy look, I'm going to let you go.
00:23:37.548 --> 00:23:38.631
Let's just pretend this didn't happen.
00:23:38.631 --> 00:23:42.128
I would hope you'd be that guy instead of the guy that's like I'm going to fuck you up.
00:23:44.042 --> 00:23:45.808
I remember that mentality from way back, when.
00:23:45.808 --> 00:23:47.003
It doesn't have to be like this.
00:23:47.003 --> 00:23:47.464
Now.
00:23:47.464 --> 00:23:53.332
I think you learn and you train so that you can be in control.
00:23:53.332 --> 00:23:57.184
This is a control game, right, it's not just a kill, break bones and choke.
00:23:57.184 --> 00:24:08.203
You're controlling the situation and then maybe let a little bit of your humanity out and a little bit of compassion for the person that you could kill if you wanted to, but you don't have to.
00:24:08.203 --> 00:24:10.907
This is what I would think we should develop more.
00:24:10.907 --> 00:24:13.647
So limit the damage, exactly, exactly.
00:24:13.647 --> 00:24:17.909
There comes a point like even you now, the little that we did earlier.
00:24:17.909 --> 00:24:27.666
I would think there comes a point where you know when somebody's just crushed and it's not going to teach them anything, to just crush them all the way through You'll have other people.
00:24:27.686 --> 00:24:28.229
Yeah, you know what?
00:24:28.509 --> 00:24:31.103
I mean it's better to be like you have it.
00:24:31.103 --> 00:24:33.609
They're not tapping, let it move on to something else.
00:24:33.609 --> 00:24:35.905
But don't ruin the dance.
00:24:35.905 --> 00:24:39.167
You have a full four, five minute, seven minute round.
00:24:39.167 --> 00:24:41.507
Enjoy your dance throughout.
00:24:41.507 --> 00:24:43.425
You don't have to kill everybody.
00:24:43.425 --> 00:24:47.325
I understand the people I came from that mentality.
00:24:47.325 --> 00:24:53.412
Health was all about kill back then, but I also know health now.
00:24:53.412 --> 00:24:56.806
He's a lot more compassionate now than he was back then.
00:24:57.347 --> 00:24:58.671
You could start there the times.
00:24:58.730 --> 00:25:00.769
Yeah, the times have changed?
00:25:01.031 --> 00:25:02.099
Yeah, for sure.
00:25:02.099 --> 00:25:08.891
But the bigger picture, jose, is the nature of your gym.
00:25:08.891 --> 00:25:12.604
I would put it out there to the other gym owners.
00:25:12.604 --> 00:25:16.667
Just think about what positive influence you can have in the community.
00:25:16.667 --> 00:25:18.892
You're in Right More than anything else.
00:25:18.892 --> 00:25:23.530
It's not like that board of everybody, like all of our people that win at tournaments and stuff like this.
00:25:23.530 --> 00:25:30.301
Okay, that's cool, that's enough to tell people hey, the stuff we teach it works, works pretty good, we have all you know.
00:25:30.301 --> 00:25:38.107
But once that's out of the way it's, how many kids can you bring in here to make a positive influence on?
00:25:38.660 --> 00:25:39.544
We have a big problem now.
00:25:39.544 --> 00:25:44.990
I would say it starts with understanding the why behind what you're doing.
00:25:44.990 --> 00:25:55.262
I don't mean to ramble, but the reality is you're going to have all these gym owners that are going to listen to this and they have instructors under them, like I have instructors that use some of them today.
00:25:55.262 --> 00:25:58.926
Do they understand the why behind what they're doing?
00:25:58.926 --> 00:26:09.347
Is it just to smash people, just to let people know they're a badass, or is there a bigger picture in this and that's to help out in the community?
00:26:09.347 --> 00:26:13.047
God put you, whatever your belief is, mohammed, universe, god, whatever that is.
00:26:13.047 --> 00:26:16.644
This is where you are and and and.
00:26:16.644 --> 00:26:19.911
Are you exercising all your options to make a positive influence there?
00:26:19.911 --> 00:26:21.578
Our kids are in a big trouble right now.
00:26:21.578 --> 00:26:22.743
It's a big problem right now.
00:26:22.865 --> 00:26:26.449
Yeah, I think there's too much influence outside right.
00:26:27.260 --> 00:26:27.823
Like it's.
00:26:27.823 --> 00:26:29.307
I think it's worse than what people think.
00:26:29.307 --> 00:26:31.030
You know, I saved something on my phone.
00:26:31.030 --> 00:26:32.444
Do you mind if I read this to you?
00:26:32.444 --> 00:26:33.790
Anybody could look this up.
00:26:33.790 --> 00:26:36.247
This is 2021.
00:26:36.247 --> 00:26:38.445
Just some basic statistics.
00:26:38.445 --> 00:26:42.489
Okay, this is on the youth of today.
00:26:42.489 --> 00:26:44.165
That's on that Android phone.
00:26:44.165 --> 00:26:45.310
Yes, on the Android.
00:26:45.310 --> 00:26:47.607
You put this on an iPhone.
00:26:47.607 --> 00:26:48.902
I wouldn't be able to.
00:26:48.902 --> 00:26:52.324
Here's let me.
00:26:52.324 --> 00:26:53.488
Let me read you this statistic.
00:26:53.488 --> 00:27:02.807
According to the new data 2021, more than a third 37% of high school students reported poor mental health during COVID-19 pandemic.
00:27:02.807 --> 00:27:05.721
37% Reported Jose.
00:27:05.721 --> 00:27:10.210
What that means is these are the kids that were brave enough to say something about it.
00:27:10.210 --> 00:27:14.136
Right, there's an even bigger number of people, kids that are afraid to say something.
00:27:14.136 --> 00:27:15.770
They're afraid to say something 37%.
00:27:15.770 --> 00:27:19.648
Okay, 44% reported persistently.
00:27:19.648 --> 00:27:22.571
They persistently felt sad or hopeless during this past year.
00:27:22.571 --> 00:27:24.098
This was 2021.
00:27:25.006 --> 00:27:26.214
It's up 30%, bro.
00:27:26.819 --> 00:27:28.404
It's up 30% going into 2023.
00:27:28.404 --> 00:27:31.044
Okay, but read the list of these statistics.
00:27:31.044 --> 00:27:32.670
More than half 55.
00:27:32.670 --> 00:27:35.244
So of that, 33% in 2021,.
00:27:35.244 --> 00:27:44.530
More than half reported they experienced emotional abuse by a parent or other adult in the home, including swearing at, insulting or putting down the student.
00:27:44.530 --> 00:27:52.208
11% experienced physical abuse by a parent or adult in the home, including hitting, beating, kicking, physically hurting the student, so on and so forth.
00:27:52.208 --> 00:27:57.289
More than a quarter 29% reported a parent or adult in their home lost their job.
00:27:59.221 --> 00:28:00.182
I don't think.
00:28:00.182 --> 00:28:02.186
I really don't think.
00:28:02.186 --> 00:28:04.652
I have no way of wrapping my brain around this.
00:28:04.652 --> 00:28:17.251
I really don't think we spend enough time sitting down with our staff in these academies to say look, do you understand the why behind what you're doing, especially with the youth classes Very tough class, by the way.
00:28:17.251 --> 00:28:21.589
Jeff Glover used to say this if you want to help your academy out, help out in the kids' class.
00:28:21.589 --> 00:28:26.625
Yeah, that's the biggest contribution you can make in your academy, but we never go into the why.
00:28:26.625 --> 00:28:30.506
You realize how bad the situation is there.
00:28:30.506 --> 00:28:35.464
That's just focused on the kids, right, but where's the root of the problem?
00:28:35.464 --> 00:28:39.540
It's with the adults around those kids, this place.
00:28:39.540 --> 00:28:43.790
And you've been doing this for how long now Two years, yeah, two years.
00:28:44.700 --> 00:28:48.449
Have you witnessed people come in and become a better person in just two years?
00:28:48.449 --> 00:28:51.766
Yeah, nine day like night and day.
00:28:51.766 --> 00:29:02.576
If we would, through people like you, start talking more about the value of what these gyms have to offer outside of gold medals, competing and all the bragging rights and all that.
00:29:02.576 --> 00:29:20.789
If, through people like you, we could communicate to the gyms and community and say, hey, look, sit your staff down and let's talk about the kids in this area, imagine the impact you would not only have on the kids, but if we can change the adults to be better adults, how would we then impact the kids?
00:29:20.920 --> 00:29:21.462
I've seen it here.
00:29:21.462 --> 00:29:22.924
My staff will tell you the same thing.
00:29:22.924 --> 00:29:38.449
I've seen it where you've had the person with military PTSD from serving in some place had it in tears in one year come to me or any of my staff to say had it not have been for this place, I probably wouldn't have stuck it out with my family.
00:29:38.449 --> 00:29:44.721
I was a horrible, horrible, horrible person Because of a place like this.
00:29:44.721 --> 00:29:47.689
I can't thank you enough for keeping this thing going.
00:29:48.150 --> 00:29:48.912
That's a big deal, bro.
00:29:48.912 --> 00:29:51.907
That's a big deal, especially when that one person has four or five kids.
00:29:51.907 --> 00:29:55.348
What do you think that home life is now like, now that they've become a better person here?
00:29:55.348 --> 00:30:15.887
Then, when you see here the beautiful thing about here that I only know here, because this is where I'm at when you start seeing families with the kids training one session and then the kids are able to play out there in the patio area and then the parents are training, this is priceless, bro, bigger than any medal to me, bigger than any right.
00:30:15.887 --> 00:30:21.170
I think we can move the needle on this, but we have to talk about it.
00:30:22.259 --> 00:30:25.945
We're really trying to do that at our gym at Strike in Los Santos.
00:30:25.945 --> 00:30:40.382
What we have like we have all around gym there's Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and then a fitness side.
00:30:40.382 --> 00:30:41.144
Yeah.
00:30:41.144 --> 00:30:55.741
Sound familiar, so familiar, yeah Something for everybody the 430 class for the kids, so there's a 330 for beginner kids and a 430 for the advanced kids.
00:30:55.741 --> 00:31:03.211
So when those kids come in for Muay Thai, there's classes going on on the other side.
00:31:03.211 --> 00:31:10.741
So instead of the parent just sitting there watching, they can be there and get a workout in too.
00:31:12.160 --> 00:31:22.968
And if the parent is going to do the adult Muay Thai class, there's another class going on for fitness that the kids are welcome to join.
00:31:22.968 --> 00:31:26.105
Yes, so it becomes a family activity.
00:31:26.105 --> 00:31:28.806
We're really trying to push that.
00:31:29.287 --> 00:31:32.049
Yeah, because what you're left with without that is what.
00:31:33.442 --> 00:31:34.667
You left dysfunction.
00:31:34.740 --> 00:31:49.762
Not just dysfunction, but when you have divorce one out of every two, which is apparently higher now these days but you have single family homes, the child is left to the influence of social media or the video games or the chat rooms in the video games, and this is not working.
00:31:49.762 --> 00:31:51.344
We know it's not working.
00:31:51.344 --> 00:32:00.443
So this is what I'm hoping we can leave your viewers with today, the ones that have academies Do just a little bit of research.
00:32:00.443 --> 00:32:05.950
Find out what's going on with the youth in your area and see how you can help.
00:32:05.950 --> 00:32:09.449
Fuck the cities and all the financing they get.
00:32:09.449 --> 00:32:13.442
Let me just say that because let me give you one example Fuck the city group in this place.
00:32:13.442 --> 00:32:14.727
It makes me mad.
00:32:14.727 --> 00:32:15.769
You know what they open to here.
00:32:15.769 --> 00:32:17.905
They got an over a million dollar contribution.
00:32:17.905 --> 00:32:19.824
You know what they open to here A fucking art museum.
00:32:19.824 --> 00:32:20.951
How does that help with bullying?
00:32:20.951 --> 00:32:25.190
How does that help with these kids that are exposed to drug abuse?
00:32:25.190 --> 00:32:29.049
And you think somebody who's contemplating suicide is saying you know what?
00:32:29.049 --> 00:32:34.223
I was going to kill myself, but thank God I saw a nice drawing at the art museum last week when we went on a field trip.
00:32:34.223 --> 00:32:38.559
How many people are just going to go out and just so.
00:32:38.559 --> 00:32:43.981
This is and I'm sorry for the cursing, but let me just I want people to feel the passion.
00:32:44.980 --> 00:32:46.826
Don't wait for a handout from the government.
00:32:46.826 --> 00:32:49.506
Don't wait, don't wait, don't wait, don't wait.
00:32:49.506 --> 00:32:50.828
Make that shit happen in your academy.
00:32:50.828 --> 00:32:53.805
Don't wait for some nonprofit.
00:32:53.805 --> 00:32:54.827
You know all that other stuff.
00:32:54.827 --> 00:32:56.884
You want to give out an academic scholarship.
00:32:56.884 --> 00:32:58.964
Give out the damn scholarship.
00:32:58.964 --> 00:33:00.762
We have what?
00:33:00.762 --> 00:33:02.788
Four or five people here giving us their report cards.
00:33:02.788 --> 00:33:06.307
They have to maintain a 3.0 or above and they can train here.
00:33:06.307 --> 00:33:09.119
Yeah, I mean, we're not rich Like.
00:33:09.119 --> 00:33:09.942
This is everything we have.
00:33:09.942 --> 00:33:10.865
We're not rich at all.
00:33:10.865 --> 00:33:12.108
Right, we're not rich at all.
00:33:13.259 --> 00:33:21.048
But if you're waiting because you want a nonprofit ID and you want, you're waiting for funding, what does it have to do with the kids right now?
00:33:21.048 --> 00:33:22.392
You waiting for what?
00:33:22.392 --> 00:33:27.150
Because the lifestyle that they're living right now that could be to their demise isn't waiting.
00:33:27.150 --> 00:33:29.339
It's trying to ruin them now.
00:33:29.339 --> 00:33:40.369
So for the viewers that own academies, I urge you, figure out where your hotspots are in your city, see what impact you can make with that youth and make that shit happen.
00:33:40.369 --> 00:33:41.132
Make it happen.
00:33:41.420 --> 00:33:49.924
If the funding comes later on, who knows, maybe one of the kids you help out has some rich dad or mom somewhere and they're like hey, you changed the life of my son or my daughter.
00:33:49.924 --> 00:33:51.269
Here's a checkbook.
00:33:51.269 --> 00:33:52.310
You know, I've seen it happen.
00:33:52.310 --> 00:33:58.045
It's happened here many times where somebody's like you did so much, here I want to give back, I want to sponsor some of these kids.
00:33:58.045 --> 00:33:59.603
I'll pay for their tournament, I'll pay for their ghee.
00:33:59.603 --> 00:34:00.742
It happens here.
00:34:00.742 --> 00:34:07.723
I think God, universe, muhammad, whatever you believe in Buddha, it'll put your heart in the right place and make that shit happen.
00:34:07.723 --> 00:34:08.465
Don't wait for handouts.
00:34:08.465 --> 00:34:09.670
Make that shit happen.
00:34:09.769 --> 00:34:09.969
You know.
00:34:10.780 --> 00:34:13.929
Sorry, I'll be on a tangent, but that's what this place is about.
00:34:13.929 --> 00:34:15.282
It's not about a play.
00:34:15.282 --> 00:34:25.865
If we don't do this, if we don't start making better adults now, what's the future look like later on for these youth, you know?
00:34:26.748 --> 00:34:27.289
I love it.
00:34:27.289 --> 00:34:29.103
I love the trending in the right direction.
00:34:29.324 --> 00:34:30.208
No, everything's giving.
00:34:30.208 --> 00:34:33.943
We do Thanksgiving lunches here First thing in the morning.
00:34:33.943 --> 00:34:36.389
We have these stations where we make brown bag sandwiches lunches.
00:34:36.389 --> 00:34:38.666
The first year we did 110.
00:34:38.666 --> 00:34:40.684
Second year, like 250.
00:34:40.684 --> 00:34:42.579
Last year we did 330.
00:34:42.579 --> 00:34:44.003
330 brown bag lunches.
00:34:44.003 --> 00:34:45.489
Somebody does 387.
00:34:45.489 --> 00:34:47.405
Yeah, so we make the brown bag lunches here.
00:34:47.405 --> 00:34:48.684
This is the first part of the morning.
00:34:48.684 --> 00:34:51.849
Then they go out with an adult and they give them out.
00:34:51.849 --> 00:34:54.748
It's showing our kids compassion to give back to the community.
00:34:54.748 --> 00:34:56.824
Where else are they going to get that?
00:34:56.824 --> 00:34:58.048
Who's going to do that Art museum?
00:34:58.048 --> 00:35:04.065
I'm sorry for my city that gets offended if they listen to this, but a damn art museum, bro.
00:35:04.065 --> 00:35:04.827
A million bucks.
00:35:04.827 --> 00:35:07.487
What could you have done with a million bucks more?
00:35:07.487 --> 00:35:09.246
They're still asking for more money for this stupid thing.
00:35:09.246 --> 00:35:12.007
I'm guarantee you, other cities are doing the same thing.
00:35:12.007 --> 00:35:13.684
They're using these funding things to make their.
00:35:13.684 --> 00:35:15.489
Oh, this is what we're doing for our kids.
00:35:15.489 --> 00:35:17.043
What are the issues?
00:35:17.043 --> 00:35:19.005
Mental health is an issue.
00:35:19.005 --> 00:35:22.583
Bullying is an issue.
00:35:24.039 --> 00:35:25.762
So mental health bullying.
00:35:25.762 --> 00:35:31.409
I follow a few people that are against bullying.
00:35:31.409 --> 00:35:33.152
Oh yeah, tom DeBlois.
00:35:33.152 --> 00:35:34.333
Oh yeah, good one.
00:35:34.333 --> 00:35:41.168
Yes, and that was one other place that has a ghee.
00:35:41.168 --> 00:35:42.449
That's anti-bullying.
00:35:42.449 --> 00:36:13.021
And I think, being able to Figure out how a kid, even adult, like you talked about the PTSD, yeah, right, if, if you can walk through the door and not be judged for anything and just train that hour or two hours that they're able to forget, they have that release About anything and everything that's going on in their life for that day.
00:36:13.021 --> 00:36:26.411
For those, for me and I talk about that in my mission statement when I open, when we started the podcast yeah, for me, like I'm a wrestling coach, the moment I walk into the wrestling room, everything outside the world just goes away.
00:36:26.451 --> 00:36:53.753
Yeah, like my focus is on making those kids better at what they're doing at what they're there for right and then, like I feel like the same thing, like in Los Banos, we we used to have a youth wrestling program at my high school I'm the high school coach, so and we have two high schools in Los Banos and both of them had a youth program.
00:36:53.753 --> 00:36:59.371
And then, a few years ago, money became an issue, right, yeah.
00:36:59.371 --> 00:37:09.030
And then they're like, hey, you can't have a youth program without paying for Renting the facility.
00:37:09.030 --> 00:37:12.476
And I'm like, well, wait a minute, how does that make any sense?
00:37:12.476 --> 00:37:19.016
Like they're telling me that we have to pay 65 bucks an hour for a janitor.
00:37:19.016 --> 00:37:26.692
Right, janitors, unless I put the trash outside, they don't come into the wrestling room.
00:37:26.692 --> 00:37:31.965
All right, right, unless I call them and say, hey, the trash cans fool, can you replace the liner?
00:37:31.965 --> 00:37:34.108
Mm-hmm, that they don't.
00:37:34.751 --> 00:37:36.934
We have the wrestling room, we have an office area.
00:37:36.934 --> 00:37:40.027
Unless I asked them to do something, they don't.
00:37:40.027 --> 00:37:41.269
Yeah, because we do it.
00:37:41.269 --> 00:37:48.170
Right, right, but you want to charge me 65 bucks an hour because the janitors got to be there?
00:37:48.170 --> 00:37:49.052
Yeah, wait a minute.
00:37:49.052 --> 00:37:50.476
Yeah, yeah, hold on.
00:37:50.476 --> 00:37:53.190
We run the youth program in the evening.
00:37:53.190 --> 00:37:57.038
Yeah, you know when the janitors at the school work in the evening.
00:37:57.038 --> 00:38:01.840
So why are you charging me over right now hours, right for somebody that's already there.
00:38:02.181 --> 00:38:09.347
Yeah, unfortunately, this is the era we're living, right back in the pioneer days, when they set up camp and they built homes and they set up a town.
00:38:09.347 --> 00:38:12.777
If your roof was busted, we all fixed that damn roof.
00:38:12.777 --> 00:38:20.318
Yeah, I mean, I really think we we could learn something by going back and and and and, instead of again.
00:38:20.318 --> 00:38:24.914
We can make excuses and and get frustrated all day long, but at the same time, time is still ticking.
00:38:24.914 --> 00:38:29.211
You know, time doesn't wait for us to free the shit out, so we have to.
00:38:29.211 --> 00:38:34.615
We have to think about what can we do with the resources we have, right, and just run with it.
00:38:34.615 --> 00:38:42.791
You know, when it comes to the kids especially, it's surprising to me and has been with me when I gone to mohawk a few times To talk to the troubled teens in their classes.
00:38:42.791 --> 00:38:54.664
It's amazing to me how none of the classes you take in All throughout school, all the way through high school, none of them are designed to teach you how your brain works.
00:38:54.664 --> 00:38:59.592
None, not a single thing, with depression being as high as it is.
00:38:59.592 --> 00:39:01.900
And that's just of the ones, again, that reported.
00:39:01.900 --> 00:39:03.083
Or there's the ones we don't hear of.
00:39:03.083 --> 00:39:05.351
Usually those end in suicide, by the way.
00:39:05.351 --> 00:39:13.358
But how come we never told that the only reason why you're angry is because you're thinking angry thoughts?
00:39:13.358 --> 00:39:18.317
How come we're never told the reason why you're sad is because you're thinking sad thoughts?
00:39:18.317 --> 00:39:19.480
Well, what does this have to do with anything?
00:39:19.480 --> 00:39:24.253
Well, when you come to a place like this, I don't have time to think of those thoughts.
00:39:24.253 --> 00:39:27.429
It's that fucking simple.
00:39:27.429 --> 00:39:39.204
When you come to a place to do the sport we have, you have a problem, you're my problem, and I don't have time to be like okay, jose, cross-collar choking me right now.
00:39:39.204 --> 00:39:41.489
I want to talk to somebody about it.
00:39:41.489 --> 00:39:47.199
Right, I need a counselor to go over why he's making me feel this way.
00:39:47.199 --> 00:39:49.117
This is bullshit, man.
00:39:49.117 --> 00:39:51.369
This is bullshit here.
00:39:51.369 --> 00:39:54.396
You have a problem, I'm your problem, you're my problem.
00:39:54.396 --> 00:40:00.739
We're training with problems, but we're also training in real time to deal with the problem and move on.
00:40:01.146 --> 00:40:02.512
This is what's happening to our youth.
00:40:02.512 --> 00:40:09.217
What's happening to our youth is they don't you know what the CDC's recommendation is for these kids that have mental issues?
00:40:09.217 --> 00:40:11.510
More counseling, more drugs.
00:40:11.510 --> 00:40:16.005
Drugs are mind-altering, not mind-changing.
00:40:16.005 --> 00:40:24.880
Right, talking about it with other people who sit behind a desk, who don't face the bullying, who don't face what their faith?
00:40:24.880 --> 00:40:25.000
That?
00:40:25.000 --> 00:40:28.016
How do they speak on a level of compassion.
00:40:28.016 --> 00:40:31.996
Now you put them in a sport like this oh, did you get popped in the face?
00:40:31.996 --> 00:40:32.478
Move on.
00:40:32.478 --> 00:40:34.688
Oh, you went to pass their guard.
00:40:34.688 --> 00:40:35.751
You got need in the face real quick.
00:40:35.751 --> 00:40:37.356
You can't just sit there and cry about it.
00:40:37.356 --> 00:40:38.068
You got to move on.
00:40:39.052 --> 00:40:43.373
I have the same yeah, you're feeling wrestling same right, wrestling class.
00:40:43.434 --> 00:40:44.818
Right, yeah, I move on now.
00:40:45.266 --> 00:40:45.907
You move on now.
00:40:46.186 --> 00:40:47.570
Yeah, you start to cry.
00:40:47.570 --> 00:40:56.985
I had, so I have like a I think she's probably six yeah, she got hurt and it.
00:40:56.985 --> 00:41:03.099
It's like when one bad thing happens that she as long as she's winning every situation.
00:41:03.099 --> 00:41:07.356
There's a smile on her face and nothing's changing the world for her.
00:41:07.465 --> 00:41:10.775
But when it don't go away that she loses a situation.
00:41:11.056 --> 00:41:12.442
Yeah, something's hurt, yeah.
00:41:12.442 --> 00:41:16.431
And the other day it was Hmm, she was grabbing her ankle or whatever.
00:41:16.431 --> 00:41:20.829
And I was like, hey, you need to get back in.
00:41:20.829 --> 00:41:22.775
Yeah, we're running live drills.
00:41:22.775 --> 00:41:25.282
Yeah, like you need to get back in.
00:41:25.282 --> 00:41:26.847
Yeah, hey, they're waiting on you.
00:41:26.847 --> 00:41:28.632
I just let her be.
00:41:28.632 --> 00:41:30.880
I didn't even go before.
00:41:30.880 --> 00:41:32.766
I would have walked over to her baby there.
00:41:32.766 --> 00:41:37.045
Yeah, now like I tell him listen, there's no time to cry.
00:41:37.045 --> 00:41:39.871
Yeah, no, if you want to cry, go off the mat.
00:41:39.931 --> 00:41:40.050
Yeah.
00:41:40.251 --> 00:41:43.318
I don't look, don't ever let anybody see you, cry, cry.
00:41:43.318 --> 00:41:44.889
I was right, I'm on.
00:41:44.889 --> 00:41:45.168
Do it.
00:41:45.168 --> 00:41:48.818
Wipe your tears, wash your face, get back on the mat because the practice is not over.
00:41:49.485 --> 00:41:51.753
Could you imagine every problem you face?
00:41:51.753 --> 00:41:57.730
Then you need to go take a drug and we'll talk to somebody about it, but we're setting our kids up to fail in life.
00:41:57.730 --> 00:42:04.311
Life is gonna throw so many more curveballs at you and then you're gonna fuck around and wait to just talk to somebody.
00:42:04.311 --> 00:42:06.157
Use your words, little Johnny, and talk about it.
00:42:06.157 --> 00:42:09.380
Well, you're setting them up to fail, to fail.
00:42:09.380 --> 00:42:10.405
So this is what I'm saying.
00:42:10.405 --> 00:42:15.043
You know, of all the arts and I'm biased because this is my passion, mm-hmm.
00:42:15.043 --> 00:42:22.773
Of all the arts, I don't know of one that teaches you in real time you have a problem, you have to deal with it now and don't stay there.
00:42:22.773 --> 00:42:24.217
Better move on that problems.
00:42:24.217 --> 00:42:32.610
But this, this is this is where I feel.
00:42:32.811 --> 00:42:34.474
And again, I didn't finish high school.
00:42:34.474 --> 00:42:35.297
I had to take my GD.
00:42:35.297 --> 00:42:40.918
I took care of my brother in 1989 because he had the AIDS and leukemia via AIDS virus and leukemia.
00:42:40.918 --> 00:42:43.130
So I wasn't doing good in school anyway, so I dropped out.
00:42:43.130 --> 00:42:47.911
So I'm not smart, I don't, but I do know this.
00:42:47.911 --> 00:42:59.130
I do know this plain and simply if you don't figure out a way to deal with the issue head on Right and not stay there and and move on.
00:42:59.592 --> 00:43:04.010
That depression is gonna take you all the way down, all the way down, has no choice.
00:43:04.010 --> 00:43:06.375
It's either constructive or destructive.
00:43:06.375 --> 00:43:16.972
Those are the only two files, by the way, and no matter what it is that you do, it's either something that will help you build yourself up or build others up, or it's something that will help tear you down or tear others down.
00:43:16.972 --> 00:43:18.077
There's no in-between.
00:43:18.077 --> 00:43:23.260
There's no in-between even remaining stagnant and playing video games as a kid eight hours a day.
00:43:23.260 --> 00:43:24.985
It's destructive for sure.
00:43:24.985 --> 00:43:25.929
We know this for sure.
00:43:25.929 --> 00:43:28.454
So what are we doing with the facts that we know?
00:43:28.454 --> 00:43:30.824
And what are we doing with what we know that actually works?
00:43:30.824 --> 00:43:48.590
And and that's that that I feel is within our power to to for the for the owners of other academies is Make sure your instructors, especially teaching kids class, do they understand how, how valuable their their role is and how big of an impact they have on these kids and how big the real issue is right.
00:43:48.590 --> 00:43:50.297
Do you do they understand that?
00:43:50.557 --> 00:44:20.668
and and then, and Then you'll see people taking different, different attitudes toward like teaching and so on yeah, I, I think it's hard, like, as, like going talking about my kids, my, my oldest son, he had a learning disability through school, yeah, right, so we were constantly Having attention towards him, yeah.
00:44:20.668 --> 00:44:23.594
And then my other two kids they did fine in school.
00:44:23.594 --> 00:44:29.648
They were all athletes, yeah, right, and they were always in a sport.
00:44:29.648 --> 00:44:30.590
That was my thing.
00:44:30.590 --> 00:44:39.617
You had to be in a sport because it made you keep your grades, yeah, and it kept them off the streets, yeah.
00:44:39.637 --> 00:45:08.083
And Then my middle son, he graduated, he came to play football here at Modesto JC, didn't work out and I didn't realize this, but he was going through some mental health issues, right, and like he Made a doctor appointment and I went with him and it was like deeper than you thought, yeah.
00:45:08.083 --> 00:45:15.416
And Like I come from a different time, right, I'm like my dad was a Marine.
00:45:15.416 --> 00:45:22.152
I'm a Marine, right, so the Mental, the mentality, is different.
00:45:22.152 --> 00:45:23.655
Sure, right, like I don't under.
00:45:23.655 --> 00:45:31.588
And Jesse, about depression, don't understand it, yeah, yeah, like I.
00:45:31.588 --> 00:45:37.038
It's not that I don't have compassion, for sure, yeah, but I just don't understand it.
00:45:37.038 --> 00:45:42.014
Like I don't Understand how they can let themselves get to that.
00:45:42.014 --> 00:45:44.101
Yeah, right, and maybe you know it's.
00:45:44.101 --> 00:45:51.501
I Don't know, but I know it's out there and I mean one of my kids was dealing with it.
00:45:51.501 --> 00:45:52.465
He's fine now.
00:45:52.465 --> 00:45:54.989
Yeah, right, yeah, he's married.
00:45:54.989 --> 00:45:56.211
He has a son.
00:45:56.311 --> 00:46:09.070
I have a grandson because of yeah but it was very eye-opening when I sat in that doctor's office and he talked about it and I was like Shit this is.
00:46:09.592 --> 00:46:10.014
It's a real.
00:46:10.014 --> 00:46:11.722
Yeah, there's a short story.
00:46:11.722 --> 00:46:18.054
I have a and For me it really outlines life for anybody.
00:46:18.054 --> 00:46:20.677
You're somewhere in this story somewhere.
00:46:20.677 --> 00:46:31.992
The story Is about a man who signed up for seminary school and it was given the final assignment the class Seminaries for guys that want to become a minister later on in seminary school.
00:46:31.992 --> 00:46:45.498
So the last final assignment from the teacher was Write a five chapter Story about your life from where you started, as early as you can remember, to where you are today.
00:46:45.498 --> 00:46:49.210
You know that was the final assignment.
00:46:49.210 --> 00:46:53.652
So the teacher was collecting all the assignments at the end of the week.
00:46:53.652 --> 00:46:56.628
Some of them were pretty thick, you know he got.
00:46:56.628 --> 00:47:00.445
He noticed one in particular was one sheet of paper from one of his students.
00:47:00.445 --> 00:47:08.905
So he gravitated to that one first to grade it and he pulled the sheet of paper and it said my life in five chapters.
00:47:10.588 --> 00:47:13.293
Chapter one I was walking down a road.
00:47:13.293 --> 00:47:15.255
There was a hole in the road.
00:47:15.255 --> 00:47:21.925
I didn't see the hole and I fell, and I fell in the hole, okay.
00:47:21.925 --> 00:47:35.798
Chapter two I Was walking down the same road, same hole in the road, same hole in the road, but this time I chose to ignore it and, sure enough, I fell in the hole right.
00:47:35.798 --> 00:47:39.594
Chapter three walking down the same road.
00:47:39.594 --> 00:47:41.451
Same hole in the road.
00:47:41.451 --> 00:47:50.237
This time I thought I was big enough to step over it, but, wouldn't you know, I came up short and I slipped and I fell in the hole.
00:47:50.237 --> 00:47:54.572
Chapter four Walking down the same road.
00:47:54.572 --> 00:48:06.570
Same hole in the road, but this time thought I was smart enough to step around it, but, goddamn it, I got too close to the edge and I slipped and I fell in the hole.
00:48:06.570 --> 00:48:10.275
Fifth and final chapter I took a new road.
00:48:10.275 --> 00:48:13.909
I took a new road.
00:48:15.365 --> 00:48:19.146
Every time I look at adults dealing with Depression.
00:48:19.146 --> 00:48:23.710
I've had my share, mm-hmm, trust me, I've had my share, more than my share sometimes.
00:48:23.710 --> 00:48:25.708
But or I look at children.
00:48:25.708 --> 00:48:28.817
I wonder where they are on that on that spectrum.
00:48:28.817 --> 00:48:34.175
Are they all huffy, puff in their own pride, thinking they're big enough to take on anything in life?
00:48:34.175 --> 00:48:36.186
Mm-hmm, they crash.
00:48:36.186 --> 00:48:37.429
We all crash.
00:48:37.429 --> 00:48:42.809
Yeah, that's expected, just like riding a bike, you can expect to fall, but don't stay down.
00:48:43.755 --> 00:48:52.364
And the only reason why we keep putting our kids back up on the bike, knowing they're gonna fall down, is because we don't want them to be robbed of the joy of the feeling of riding a bike without the training wheels?
00:48:52.364 --> 00:48:55.748
Right, we know the end result With these kids.
00:48:55.748 --> 00:48:57.914
They don't know the end result, they don't see it.
00:48:57.914 --> 00:49:13.733
But for someone like you wrestling coach, teacher in Anna's case, michael, also teacher as well, outside of you know here, and we see the end result, they don't I get frustrated when I see parents, you know, and they're asking the kids do you feel like going to practice today?
00:49:13.733 --> 00:49:17.213
They don't see, they don't, they don't you.
00:49:17.253 --> 00:49:17.956
That's your job.
00:49:17.956 --> 00:49:20.724
Your job is to know they have to get through this.
00:49:20.724 --> 00:49:32.628
Giving them the option to just stay still or Hang out by the hole is not the right option, right, or ignoring it, pretending not to see the hole?
00:49:32.628 --> 00:49:34.391
That's that's even bigger problem.
00:49:34.391 --> 00:49:37.378
Where's most people are still stuck at pretending is not there.
00:49:37.378 --> 00:49:40.001
They know is there, but they're pretending as not there.
00:49:40.001 --> 00:49:42.009
Right, so they never get to the new road.
00:49:42.108 --> 00:49:48.963
This and for the again, for the, your audience, your Academy, might be the new road that saves a life.
00:49:48.963 --> 00:49:55.719
And If all your efforts were to just save one of those kids, one of those adults, would it be worth it?
00:49:55.719 --> 00:49:58.246
Damn right, damn right.
00:49:58.246 --> 00:49:58.887
Be worth it.
00:49:58.887 --> 00:50:08.146
You know they're watching, the kids are watching, and when they see adults of different nationalities, ethnicities, different financial, you know Securities and things.
00:50:08.146 --> 00:50:16.753
That when they see us all together doing one thing, supporting each other, that when pictures you see over there with a picnic we're doing a muddy run together, it can't be just about you two cannot.
00:50:16.753 --> 00:50:29.998
This is like a nice vehicle, but once they're here, they have nobody else to teach them what a community of people can be like as a family, regardless of your background, regardless of the skin color and your ethical origin.
00:50:29.998 --> 00:50:32.047
This is the example.
00:50:32.047 --> 00:50:32.829
This is so much more.
00:50:33.250 --> 00:50:34.652
Now Let me get to the last part.
00:50:34.652 --> 00:50:47.713
This is why we don't care for having douchebags in our gym, because when you start depleting the people that come here because they don't, they're just hurting everybody that's in the gym.
00:50:47.713 --> 00:50:49.000
This is what's not talked about.
00:50:49.000 --> 00:50:51.193
It's not that we don't like people to be aggressive.
00:50:51.193 --> 00:50:53.923
It's not that we want to shun the warrior spirit.
00:50:53.923 --> 00:51:01.878
It's just that when you become a threat to depleting the financial means, we need to keep this place open to support those kids.
00:51:01.878 --> 00:51:03.864
Yes, you're a threat to that.
00:51:04.947 --> 00:51:06.429
It's not that we're trying to be soft.
00:51:06.429 --> 00:51:08.626
It's not that we're trying to be a soft side of jujitsu.
00:51:08.626 --> 00:51:09.208
It's not that.
00:51:09.208 --> 00:51:13.644
It's just that in the big picture, two or three warriors.
00:51:13.644 --> 00:51:28.693
That's smashing through everybody carelessly, when they're just hobbyists at best we're all pretty much hobbyists at best, right, for the most part, then you're taking away potentially the opportunity we have to be a benefit to the community, right?
00:51:28.693 --> 00:51:29.637
That's the big threat.
00:51:29.637 --> 00:51:31.342
It's not that we're, you know.
00:51:31.342 --> 00:51:33.630
Oh, you know, we should be rolling hard all the time.
00:51:33.630 --> 00:51:34.782
We should be, you know.
00:51:34.782 --> 00:51:38.742
Okay, it's five minute round, we should be training 20 minute rounds, 30 rounds a day.
00:51:38.742 --> 00:51:42.141
It's like no, like wait, like there's a, there's a time for this.
00:51:42.141 --> 00:51:44.306
And then there's the bigger picture.
00:51:44.447 --> 00:51:47.038
The bigger picture is is how do we keep the lights on?
00:51:47.038 --> 00:51:59.594
Yeah, I'll guarantee you that you have a lot of viewers that aren't talking about how rough it is to just keep the doors open, brother, you know, yeah, it's nice, like hugamon janitor won't pick up shit.
00:51:59.594 --> 00:52:02.905
But it's another thing when it's like how do we get cleaning supplies?
00:52:02.905 --> 00:52:08.990
How do we replace all the toilet paper that's just being fucking carelessly thrown everywhere.
00:52:08.990 --> 00:52:10.246
And you see what I'm saying.
00:52:10.246 --> 00:52:11.492
This is real, I'm being real.
00:52:11.492 --> 00:52:12.217
I'm being real.
00:52:12.217 --> 00:52:16.521
You're gonna get a lot of people talking about oh yes, you know the gym, this, and I like these moves.
00:52:16.521 --> 00:52:17.804
I like being real.
00:52:17.804 --> 00:52:18.786
I like being real.
00:52:18.786 --> 00:52:22.141
How do we, how do we help these gym owners out?
00:52:22.141 --> 00:52:23.728
How do you help the guy?
00:52:23.728 --> 00:52:29.695
That's like I could pay the tags on my car or I could buy more supplies for the kids class.
00:52:29.695 --> 00:52:30.940
I think I'm gonna buy more.
00:52:30.940 --> 00:52:39.465
I think I'm gonna buy more supplies for the kids class lock it, the bigger pictures help these kids.
00:52:40.007 --> 00:52:40.469
There's those.
00:52:40.469 --> 00:52:41.355
Some of us are out there.
00:52:41.355 --> 00:52:43.402
Check my tags on my truck when you go out.
00:52:43.402 --> 00:52:52.992
Anyway, I, I really enjoyed our time.
00:52:52.992 --> 00:53:03.068
I really did, jose, yeah, I really enjoyed what you're doing and, and for the audience members that's watching this today, I hope not to offend any of the other academies.
00:53:03.108 --> 00:53:05.342
I'm just I'm too old to not keep it real.
00:53:05.342 --> 00:53:07.206
I'm too old man.
00:53:07.206 --> 00:53:10.282
I'm not impressed by things that are just a waste of time.
00:53:10.282 --> 00:53:15.023
It just I see a lot of things going on in gyms and it's like you're just a hamster in a wheel.
00:53:15.023 --> 00:53:19.063
You're not making any ground at all, you're just spinning yourself to death.
00:53:19.485 --> 00:53:20.608
The bigger picture is what?
00:53:20.608 --> 00:53:21.661
What do you want to accomplish?
00:53:21.661 --> 00:53:22.302
You have this gym.
00:53:22.302 --> 00:53:24.088
What do you want to accomplish?
00:53:24.088 --> 00:53:28.902
And if it's not to better, to make better adults through starting with the youth first, what are you doing?
00:53:28.902 --> 00:53:30.170
What are you doing this for?
00:53:30.170 --> 00:53:30.574
For what?
00:53:30.574 --> 00:53:40.262
Because you want to have some nice shirts with your logo on it and say this is me, and you want to go to a tournament and be like, yeah, we dominated, we got the team trophy, like, is that really?
00:53:40.262 --> 00:53:41.268
Is that at the end of the day?
00:53:41.268 --> 00:53:43.822
None of that makes any damn bit of sense, none of it.
00:53:43.822 --> 00:53:45.686
Who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year?
00:53:45.686 --> 00:53:47.793
Nobody gives a fuck.
00:53:47.793 --> 00:53:51.563
That's the Nobel Peace Prize.
00:53:51.563 --> 00:53:52.887
Who won it last year?
00:53:52.887 --> 00:53:54.490
They, me, three people that want it.
00:53:54.490 --> 00:53:56.012
Nobody cares.
00:53:56.012 --> 00:53:58.635
Everybody's gonna forget the things that you said.
00:53:58.635 --> 00:54:00.684
Everyone's gonna forget the things that you did.
00:54:00.684 --> 00:54:05.144
They're not gonna forget the way you made them feel they're not.
00:54:05.144 --> 00:54:08.934
So what can you do in what?
00:54:09.114 --> 00:54:12.983
yeah, yeah be that a be that example these kids need to.
00:54:12.983 --> 00:54:13.666
They already have.
00:54:13.666 --> 00:54:15.431
You know no such thing as a wasted life.
00:54:15.431 --> 00:54:16.681
You could always live as a bad example.
00:54:16.681 --> 00:54:23.927
Well, that's deep, that's gonna offend somebody, and if they're offended, you're the one I'm talking about.
00:54:23.927 --> 00:54:25.965
There's no such thing as a wasted life.
00:54:25.965 --> 00:54:27.755
You could always live as a bad example.
00:54:27.755 --> 00:54:28.318
Why?
00:54:28.318 --> 00:54:29.161
Not choose the other route.
00:54:29.641 --> 00:54:43.213
Yeah, yeah, yeah so get back to some of the yeah, so I stopped doing G in 2006.
00:54:43.894 --> 00:54:44.817
I didn't really believe in that.
00:54:44.817 --> 00:54:49.112
I was one of those guys that was like, okay, it's more real, realistic, fighting no G.
00:54:49.112 --> 00:54:59.737
Yeah, I thought that now that I'm older, who fuck, strips naked and fights, these people that are like I'm agitated with grips, like I'm at all, just bothers me, the grips.
00:54:59.737 --> 00:55:00.440
Fucking deal with it.
00:55:00.440 --> 00:55:03.190
Man, you're gonna fight someone naked or what I get.
00:55:03.190 --> 00:55:05.630
Some people take off their shirt when they fight in this.
00:55:05.630 --> 00:55:07.882
I've seen it, you know, but there's still hair.
00:55:07.882 --> 00:55:12.347
You gonna tell me like they're gonna be like okay, bro, like no grabbing, like no, grabbing fabric.
00:55:12.347 --> 00:55:13.333
Okay, we're gonna fight.
00:55:13.333 --> 00:55:15.222
Like don't, don't grab my shirt.
00:55:15.222 --> 00:55:17.675
Okay, we're just gonna fight, but don't you know?
00:55:17.675 --> 00:55:22.594
So I think that mentality was like there's a couple parts to this.
00:55:22.594 --> 00:55:27.849
Right, the big thing is is it's more realistic to fight no G because it's more realistic?
00:55:27.849 --> 00:55:28.860
That's not true to me.
00:55:28.860 --> 00:55:32.543
To me it's you're gonna fight in the street, it's gonna you're gonna have fabric.
00:55:32.543 --> 00:55:34.739
You know there's this new thing out where they're fighting in the pants.
00:55:34.739 --> 00:55:37.248
You know the they're doing jujitsu with the pants and the boots.
00:55:37.248 --> 00:55:38.121
They just in the dirt.
00:55:38.121 --> 00:55:39.751
It's in, it's in, like in Brazil.
00:55:39.751 --> 00:55:40.597
Now they're.
00:55:40.597 --> 00:55:41.643
They're coming out with tournaments now.
00:55:41.643 --> 00:55:45.262
So they're, that's how they're holding their tournaments fully attire and everything okay.
00:55:45.262 --> 00:56:01.322
But the other thing is is I understand folks that progress coming from wrestling as well, especially that you progress faster and you're able to resist the higher technical moves when you don't have the grip of the cloth.
00:56:01.322 --> 00:56:11.083
So I understand why that's so appetizing, because then you could be a blue belt giving a black belt a really hard time in no G, whereas in the G is very.
00:56:11.083 --> 00:56:12.987
It can be that much harder because of the grips.
00:56:12.987 --> 00:56:20.099
So I'm both think of it this way again in your academy, how many of you guys are hobbyists, right?
00:56:20.099 --> 00:56:23.809
John Danahur has got like I don't know thousands of students.
00:56:23.809 --> 00:56:35.922
You only hear of like ten of them, maybe of that, right, so those other ones are paying the bill for that, because in New York that I'm sure that building ain't cheap, so someone has to pay for it from us, right?
00:56:35.922 --> 00:56:40.983
Okay, so you have these people that are primarily hobbyists.
00:56:40.983 --> 00:56:44.797
Well, do they work out at the gym or just jujitsu?
00:56:44.797 --> 00:56:47.083
You'll have hobbyists that this is their only exercise.
00:56:47.083 --> 00:56:48.387
They don't.
00:56:48.387 --> 00:56:51.925
You know, I have a lot of people here, so this is another thing that we do here.
00:56:51.925 --> 00:56:54.340
I don't need to see them run in circles.
00:56:54.340 --> 00:56:55.744
I get it.
00:56:55.744 --> 00:56:56.947
This is our warm-ups.
00:56:56.947 --> 00:56:57.789
Here are two minute drills.
00:56:57.789 --> 00:57:01.510
So when we do warm-ups here, I don't for me personally.
00:57:01.510 --> 00:57:09.505
Again, if you're in an academy that does the, the shrimping back and forth and the in the running around in circles, I understand why I'm not in shining it here.
00:57:09.505 --> 00:57:13.003
Two minute drills, like what you started with Michael earlier.
00:57:13.003 --> 00:57:17.233
I have your back for two minutes, you know my back for two minutes and we is plant, we do our escapes.
00:57:17.233 --> 00:57:17.998
That's our warm-ups here.
00:57:17.998 --> 00:57:20.266
I don't need to see you do cartwheels and stuff for the kids.
00:57:20.266 --> 00:57:24.206
I do for the kids, I do their bear crawls and all those adults.
00:57:24.206 --> 00:57:29.206
If you're paying money here, I need to see you move and doing movements that actually apply.
00:57:29.206 --> 00:57:32.023
So it's just a little bit, a little bit different.
00:57:32.184 --> 00:57:33.831
But why the ghee?
00:57:33.831 --> 00:57:35.378
Because they need to sweat.
00:57:35.378 --> 00:57:35.940
We know this.
00:57:35.940 --> 00:57:40.150
So if you you need to right, you need to sweat like it.
00:57:40.150 --> 00:57:43.907
And if you need, if you like that nice air-conditioned environment, then that's great too.
00:57:43.907 --> 00:57:51.007
But we you do know, to get those, those things out of your system, you need to sweat, right, those toxins and everything, that's it.
00:57:51.007 --> 00:57:51.891
You need to sweat.
00:57:51.891 --> 00:57:55.686
So put on the ghee and sweat it out, and sweat it out, you know.
00:57:55.686 --> 00:57:58.311
So I go back to your original question.
00:57:58.311 --> 00:57:59.545
Both, both are important.
00:57:59.545 --> 00:58:01.612
Again, you know we do both.
00:58:01.612 --> 00:58:03.860
So we have ghee days, no ghee days.
00:58:03.860 --> 00:58:05.184
We also have wrestling days twice a week.
00:58:05.184 --> 00:58:12.070
Yeah, kids class, they have one day dedicated just wrestling Wednesdays, really just wrestling all day.
00:58:12.070 --> 00:58:12.331
Wednesday.
00:58:12.331 --> 00:58:17.032
Wrestling Wednesdays yeah, have to fight starts standing standing school yard.
00:58:17.032 --> 00:58:20.289
Fight starts standing, end up on ground but start standing wrestling.
00:58:20.289 --> 00:58:22.985
Big part of it, can't deny it, you can't deny it.
00:58:24.668 --> 00:58:27.963
I wish that right.
00:58:27.963 --> 00:58:34.244
There's a hard.
00:58:34.244 --> 00:59:08.469
Yeah, my sorry, it's what opposed hard damn right, it's free that, like we'll do a wrestling practice and everybody will be like, yeah, but you play freeze tags the last time yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, everybody is running full speed yeah they're not tired.
00:59:08.469 --> 00:59:12.684
No, no, no, they didn't see it, they didn't see in between the stripes.
00:59:12.844 --> 00:59:14.088
Yeah, they didn't see the progress.
00:59:14.088 --> 00:59:15.221
Embrace the suck.
00:59:15.221 --> 00:59:16.063
I saw it on the sticker.
00:59:16.063 --> 00:59:16.525
You ever see that.
00:59:16.525 --> 00:59:17.547
Embrace the suck.
00:59:17.547 --> 00:59:21.389
But you have to know how do you embrace it, not just tell somebody embrace it.
00:59:21.389 --> 00:59:23.766
You have to know why we don't have our why is right.
00:59:23.766 --> 00:59:28.791
You know, if you understood the why, be hearing what you do, then it makes the suck that much easier.
00:59:28.791 --> 00:59:29.012
Right?
00:59:29.012 --> 00:59:37.744
My why is is gone and my family and what I mean by family is my friends and my students all, or that's my why, that's my why.
00:59:37.963 --> 00:59:43.342
You know people used to say like, oh, think in terms of what would they write on your tombstone?
00:59:43.342 --> 00:59:58.896
You know, when you die, for me is not, it is, it's not that, for me it's understanding that your legacy, whatever legacy you could build, will go as far as possibly your grandkids.
00:59:58.896 --> 01:00:00.760
What do you know about your great grandpa?
01:00:00.760 --> 01:00:09.628
There you go, that's as far, doesn't matter how, how, all his achievements and accolades, I don't even matter what he like.
01:00:09.628 --> 01:00:17.581
There's hardly anybody who could give a clear, has a clear grasp of what their great grandma, great grandpa, was like.
01:00:17.581 --> 01:00:23.152
Your legacy at best is maybe two generations at best.
01:00:23.152 --> 01:00:26.186
It's a very small window, by the way.
01:00:26.186 --> 01:00:35.222
And then the older we get right you and I are very close in age the older we get it's you realize that there's no fun in being served anymore.
01:00:35.222 --> 01:00:42.282
The true joy is serving others and seeing others develop the best version of themselves.
01:00:42.282 --> 01:00:48.179
Knowing that you had a small part, a small part in that that's, that's your true satisfaction.
01:00:48.179 --> 01:00:49.384
There's no, there's.
01:00:49.384 --> 01:00:50.427
It's priceless.
01:00:50.527 --> 01:00:53.735
You can't buy that and the beauty of our sport here.
01:00:53.735 --> 01:00:55.635
You can't fake this shit.
01:00:55.635 --> 01:01:00.690
Oh, I could do this shit all day long, even though nobody does this shit when they end up fight.
01:01:00.690 --> 01:01:02.474
I could do all that shit all day long.
01:01:02.474 --> 01:01:06.932
Right, I could fake that pretty damn well, even if I never did it Right.
01:01:06.932 --> 01:01:10.440
You can't fake this and I need you.
01:01:10.440 --> 01:01:15.358
I Can't stand in front of a TV and practice Jews I have.
01:01:15.358 --> 01:01:16.802
I need you, I.
01:01:16.802 --> 01:01:18.193
So this is a.
01:01:18.193 --> 01:01:19.217
This is a group effort.
01:01:19.217 --> 01:01:21.750
No matter how you, there's there's no eye in this.
01:01:21.750 --> 01:01:22.451
This is a week.
01:01:22.451 --> 01:01:23.474
This is a we thing.
01:01:23.474 --> 01:01:29.835
This is a we thing another reason why I don't like it when we start damaging our and hurting our, our teammates.
01:01:29.835 --> 01:01:41.077
You know, I feel destroyed inside when you know Anybody that I've accidentally hurt while while rolling, because now I lose out on apartment for like three months, six months, you know, and I ruined.
01:01:41.077 --> 01:01:55.139
I Is not necessary, not necessary, but this is a, this is a we effort To to maybe not so much a legacy, as much as it is is is to get that feeling like wow, this person didn't believe in this.
01:01:55.300 --> 01:01:56.510
How many nerds have you come across?
01:01:56.510 --> 01:01:59.179
They came into the gym and I like badasses.
01:01:59.179 --> 01:02:02.690
Now, you know, bro, it's, it's, it's amazing.
01:02:02.690 --> 01:02:07.737
I look at some of these guys and I'm like, wow, when you first came here, I was like no, this guy, you're not gonna last.
01:02:07.737 --> 01:02:13.172
And now they're right and and then they tough it out and Then they feel whole.
01:02:13.172 --> 01:02:22.641
So you could see the, you could see how they they've developed a sense of like Right and something real right and nobody can take that away from them.
01:02:22.641 --> 01:02:24.672
Our kids need to feel this.
01:02:24.672 --> 01:02:31.576
Sorry to keep bringing it back to the kids, but the kids they don't get this from a video game, they don't get this room.
01:02:31.576 --> 01:02:36.315
These are real achievements, these are real emotions and they have to, they have to feel.
01:02:36.516 --> 01:02:38.050
You have to learn how to lose, man.
01:02:38.050 --> 01:02:40.195
You're gonna learn how to lose real quick in this sport when you first start.
01:02:40.195 --> 01:02:48.990
You gonna learn if you can't cope with losing Life will life will dish that out to you You're gonna lose big relationships, jobs.
01:02:48.990 --> 01:02:51.315
You're gonna lose big, you're gonna lose big.
01:02:51.315 --> 01:02:58.724
And if you just if you, if you just can't cope with it and deal with it, your only resort is then Poor mental health and possibly suicide.
01:02:58.724 --> 01:03:03.639
You know, yeah, but we can change that.
01:03:03.639 --> 01:03:08.128
We can, or we can at least have a positive influence on moving that needle the right direction.
01:03:08.128 --> 01:03:10.177
Yeah, yeah.
01:03:11.831 --> 01:03:17.398
Make it that for sure, I think we already are, think we already are pretty good, yeah, so what's something outside of Jiu-Jitsu?
01:03:19.472 --> 01:03:19.532
Oh.
01:03:21.731 --> 01:03:22.072
My wife.
01:03:22.072 --> 01:03:24.543
We play ice hockey, that we're on ice hockey team together.
01:03:24.543 --> 01:03:25.666
She just started this year.
01:03:25.666 --> 01:03:26.429
This was a childhood dream of mine.
01:03:26.429 --> 01:03:34.025
I played ice hockey when I was nine years old but, again, money was really, really tough and it was in foster city at the time.
01:03:34.025 --> 01:03:38.869
And this year I just started back up again and we're playing adult ice hockey.
01:03:38.869 --> 01:03:44.269
She knows how to skate a little bit on the ice and she's a trooper, so she joined a co-ed ice hockey.
01:03:45.916 --> 01:03:48.750
So Wednesday nights is our date night and it's not like any other.
01:03:48.750 --> 01:03:55.139
We're on the high, we're on the ice, we're on the high, we're on the ice ramming in.
01:03:55.139 --> 01:03:56.362
The people had stocked in.
01:03:56.362 --> 01:03:57.905
We play what's the name of it?
01:03:57.905 --> 01:04:02.391
Oak Park, oh no, I wish Oak Park Ice rink.
01:04:02.391 --> 01:04:03.835
Yeah yeah, oh yeah, there's a.
01:04:03.835 --> 01:04:06.342
It's been there since 1969 or something like that.
01:04:06.342 --> 01:04:08.106
But we're part of a team.
01:04:08.106 --> 01:04:11.706
I did a three-day tournament in Vegas and man, that was.
01:04:11.706 --> 01:04:13.023
That was a beautiful thing.
01:04:13.110 --> 01:04:33.342
We also have three kids at home still ones in high school, ones, middle school ones in elementary school and as a school teacher, and so we're, we're, we're actively involved with with the kids and that occupies most of our days, but when it comes to free time, whatever that it looks like, which is very rare we love.
01:04:33.342 --> 01:04:36.436
Yeah, we try to do like outdoor it.
01:04:36.436 --> 01:04:39.943
We like go boogie boarding, we'll ride our kayaks, we'll go fishing.
01:04:39.943 --> 01:04:51.657
You know, really making sure we're keeping that, that family core unit, a Something of value to be cherished and by our kids, you know.
01:04:51.657 --> 01:04:54.182
So we're doing our best that we can there.
01:04:54.182 --> 01:05:00.418
But, yeah, lately it's been ice hockey on on Wednesdays and Definitely something different.
01:05:01.262 --> 01:05:03.356
Oh, bro, this is a again, this is there's.
01:05:03.356 --> 01:05:04.543
No, you know, it's just you.
01:05:04.543 --> 01:05:12.929
You, if you haven't already, you'll get to the point where you have these hubs to hide out in during a round, you know, where you kind of like locked down and you kind of can stay there and catch your breath.
01:05:12.929 --> 01:05:14.695
None of this happens in hockey.
01:05:14.695 --> 01:05:16.427
It's constant, going constant.
01:05:16.427 --> 01:05:20.981
You're constantly moving there and you can't, you can't slack because you're in.
01:05:20.981 --> 01:05:21.563
Everybody sees you.
01:05:21.563 --> 01:05:24.085
You got to keep moving, yeah, you got to keep moving, yeah.
01:05:24.085 --> 01:05:29.655
Even more reason why I need to get you out there.
01:05:29.655 --> 01:05:31.117
You might be a good goalie then.
01:05:31.418 --> 01:05:35.496
The other thing, too is it's humbling for me Because you're, you're out of your regular element.
01:05:35.496 --> 01:05:46.119
You know, here I have, like I have places where I feel safe under anybody right, but out there, I'm vulnerable, and you learn to embrace that vulnerable, that vulnerability.
01:05:46.119 --> 01:05:51.237
You know you, you learn it's a kind of it becomes exciting Instead of like, huh, I'm not that good at it.
01:05:51.237 --> 01:06:02.469
You know, it's like that's what we see with the kids today, like as soon as they, the minute, like you were talking about, you're one girl, yeah, the minute you can't cope with the idea that you're not as proficient at something as you see other people and you shut down.
01:06:02.469 --> 01:06:04.755
Well, what is it was left for you at that.
01:06:04.755 --> 01:06:05.737
You know what's you?
01:06:05.737 --> 01:06:07.181
Everything's gonna be new to you.
01:06:07.181 --> 01:06:08.932
So I was.
01:06:08.952 --> 01:06:09.614
Hockey humbles.
01:06:09.614 --> 01:06:13.041
It humbles me, you know, it really does.
01:06:13.041 --> 01:06:21.057
I feel the excitement of Again embracing the suck Not great at all, but it's, it's enjoyable, yeah.
01:06:21.057 --> 01:06:23.784
And then there's a lot of meditation, bible time.
01:06:23.784 --> 01:06:31.000
You know I don't shy away from being what people call a Christian, but I'm I'm really into scripture.
01:06:31.000 --> 01:06:32.242
I love reading my Bible.
01:06:32.242 --> 01:06:33.452
Why we do it together?
01:06:33.452 --> 01:06:39.253
We go to church on Sundays at shelter Cove, which is a a lot of my students go there as well, and it works for me.
01:06:39.253 --> 01:06:41.181
We love everybody from all different.
01:06:41.181 --> 01:06:43.289
We have a lot of people from different religions.
01:06:43.289 --> 01:06:45.579
I like learning about their stuff too, and so.
01:06:45.579 --> 01:06:51.402
But the Bible just has a way of certain verses hitting when they need to hit.
01:06:51.402 --> 01:06:54.496
In my life, whatever I'm, whatever I'm you know dealing with.
01:06:54.958 --> 01:06:57.914
Again, it's a matter of understanding the mind.
01:06:57.914 --> 01:07:03.802
If you, if you Allow yourself to just open yourself up to thoughts, the bad ones will creep in.
01:07:03.802 --> 01:07:05.514
People don't understand.
01:07:05.514 --> 01:07:05.855
Did you know?
01:07:05.855 --> 01:07:06.617
You can't make a thought.
01:07:06.617 --> 01:07:10.737
There's, it's an absolute impossibility to make a thought.
01:07:10.737 --> 01:07:12.563
All you can do is open yourself up to thoughts.
01:07:12.563 --> 01:07:14.699
So my mom passed away many years ago.
01:07:14.699 --> 01:07:16.789
Right, I can't make a thought about her.
01:07:16.789 --> 01:07:21.126
I could just open up the idea of thinking about her and these things will start dropping in.
01:07:21.126 --> 01:07:24.039
And so there's no such thing will.
01:07:24.322 --> 01:07:25.849
And this is part of people that go into depression.
01:07:25.849 --> 01:07:29.802
All of their stinking thinking they think are themselves coming up with their own thoughts.
01:07:29.802 --> 01:07:31.454
That's not even possible.
01:07:31.454 --> 01:07:32.717
You can't make a thought.
01:07:32.717 --> 01:07:40.239
You could just open yourself up to them and then you claim those bad thoughts as your own and that's what sends you into this depressed mode for those that have like PTSD.
01:07:41.032 --> 01:07:45.775
You start thinking like I could have been a better husband, I could have been a better father, I could have been a bit, and nobody knows you're.
01:07:45.775 --> 01:08:01.097
You're fighting these battles in your head but you and then you go home and you're all frustrated and then maybe your wife says something that makes you feel even worse again that you're bad, this, and then all hell breaks Looses because all day long you've been battling these thoughts already, and so you become short-tempered.
01:08:01.097 --> 01:08:07.262
Not because you're a short-tempered person, but because you've been worn thin already all day thinking these, thinking these thoughts.
01:08:07.262 --> 01:08:13.914
This is why, yeah, the number one thing I do when I go speak at high schools is I teach them how to, how their brain works.
01:08:13.914 --> 01:08:28.912
If you can, if you can, get rid of the stinking thinking and and and put something else in its place like this, then you don't have time to be, you know, just Marinating in that shit.
01:08:29.574 --> 01:08:32.353
This is like a good Bro it's right.
01:08:32.474 --> 01:08:33.818
It's right in your face.
01:08:33.818 --> 01:08:36.775
That's right in your face.
01:08:41.791 --> 01:08:43.377
Yeah, you seem to open.
01:08:43.538 --> 01:08:53.692
Yeah, bro, can I, before you go further, watching your face light up like that man, it it, it's like a high for me, you know.
01:08:53.692 --> 01:09:03.158
So when we're going over just basic movements like that, and then you, you see someone light up, I Would much rather see that on you than me.
01:09:03.158 --> 01:09:03.840
Feel that for me.
01:09:03.840 --> 01:09:06.314
It does so much more for me.
01:09:06.314 --> 01:09:09.100
Like you think it maybe it's a blessing to you, is not?
01:09:09.100 --> 01:09:10.623
It's a big blessing for me.
01:09:10.623 --> 01:09:13.905
So so I'm the one thinking you for those moments, you know.
01:09:13.905 --> 01:09:16.672
But anyway, good, and like.
01:09:19.091 --> 01:09:23.479
No, no, you were talking about, like even just today, going over the basic movements and and and how.
01:09:23.479 --> 01:09:25.082
That's like eye opening for you.
01:09:25.623 --> 01:09:34.579
You know Little details make it so much simpler.
01:09:34.720 --> 01:09:35.882
Yeah right.
01:09:35.882 --> 01:09:41.554
Yeah, I.
01:09:43.150 --> 01:09:43.913
Get into ball.
01:09:43.913 --> 01:10:07.627
It makes sure I was yeah, can't think of anything else right and then Process what's going on, and then it just makes me want to see more right, right.
01:10:07.627 --> 01:10:10.275
Yeah so instead of Me.
01:10:11.110 --> 01:10:12.475
Looking at garbage?
01:10:12.475 --> 01:10:13.953
Hey, man.
01:10:13.953 --> 01:10:19.235
Yes, that's it Right, there's no space for other shit.
01:10:19.235 --> 01:10:20.801
Yeah, no, right.
01:10:20.801 --> 01:10:22.689
It occupies with the right stuff, right?
01:10:23.654 --> 01:10:31.789
I'm like, oh how, like I was telling Jesse on the way over here, I hit a clock show the other night and was it good?
01:10:31.789 --> 01:10:35.859
Yeah, it was the first time.
01:10:35.859 --> 01:10:52.940
I had tried on previous occasions to do it and it's just by me watching a video, yeah, and seeing the placement, seeing what he's doing, and then me trying to mimic that in the room, yeah, in a live situation, yeah, right.
01:10:52.940 --> 01:10:58.578
So I hit it the other night and I was like, oh yeah, was it great?
01:10:58.578 --> 01:11:01.945
Yeah, no, was there details that I probably missed?
01:11:02.367 --> 01:11:15.019
Yeah, probably, yeah, yeah but the concept like okay, I did this, joe, like, like, when we talked about using the lapels, to like pulling them out.
01:11:15.199 --> 01:11:21.399
Yeah, yeah, Well, right right.
01:11:21.699 --> 01:11:26.639
No, what the terminology could be Freehand it's a it's ahead of the game.
01:11:26.658 --> 01:11:27.904
You know, let me hand this to you.
01:11:27.904 --> 01:11:31.939
Okay, yeah, I Knew ahead of time what I was gonna do.
01:11:31.939 --> 01:11:34.010
The same thing with that lapel.
01:11:34.010 --> 01:11:34.752
We didn't.
01:11:34.752 --> 01:11:42.270
What we didn't go over was maybe, instead of putting that lapel over so fast, I Show it to so you reach for it and then I come inside.
01:11:42.270 --> 01:11:44.233
What does that mean?
01:11:44.233 --> 01:11:54.621
Means it like when, now, when you start thinking of techniques, how can I accomplish the same end result, but in a way that doesn't disrupt what you want to do?
01:11:54.621 --> 01:12:00.203
Remember, I told you earlier your your best Jiu Jitsu game is gonna be where he's getting what he wants.
01:12:00.203 --> 01:12:04.463
You also are getting what you want, but ultimately it benefits you.
01:12:04.604 --> 01:12:08.019
When I roll now with my students, these guys will tell you the.
01:12:08.019 --> 01:12:12.939
So, depending on what the round is, say, let's say it's a four minute round, the first three minutes of yours.
01:12:12.939 --> 01:12:17.390
So I lay down and I I earned my way on top.
01:12:17.390 --> 01:12:31.815
I don't just go out the gate, balls to the wall and just like you know, like I want to earn, I want to, I want to Grow my defense as well while you're growing your, your attacks, right, okay, but even then.
01:12:31.815 --> 01:12:38.755
So when now I'm on top, or if I'm practicing a finish, if I'm working so hard for it, and then I'm.
01:12:38.755 --> 01:12:41.805
Then I go home and I'm obsessing why was I working so hard?
01:12:42.247 --> 01:12:43.069
Where was my setup?
01:12:43.069 --> 01:12:45.197
How, what did I telegraph it?
01:12:45.197 --> 01:12:49.270
What could I do to get his hands up higher so that I'm not trying to push?
01:12:49.270 --> 01:12:53.934
You know, if I go north-south and I'm trying to push the wrist down to the waist, am I, am I?
01:12:53.934 --> 01:12:57.850
How do I get him to move his Hit hands down to his waist?
01:12:57.850 --> 01:13:07.238
So just a quick example if you're north-south, you're on top and I need to get his way hands down those ways, how can you get him to want to put his, his hands down to the waist?
01:13:07.238 --> 01:13:10.072
Go back to side control and neon belly, they go.
01:13:10.072 --> 01:13:11.173
Neon belly, they push your knee.
01:13:11.173 --> 01:13:12.216
Now the hands are there.
01:13:12.216 --> 01:13:14.603
Go back to north-south, keep the hands there, right.
01:13:14.603 --> 01:13:17.595
So maybe it's just a different path, a new road.
01:13:17.595 --> 01:13:21.844
You know, maybe, and and this is where the development comes over time.
01:13:22.391 --> 01:13:28.409
You know, is is just strategizing how to accomplish what you want without trying so hard.
01:13:28.409 --> 01:13:31.680
I'll tell you this is kind of a dirty secret of mine.
01:13:31.680 --> 01:13:37.194
I really don't care about finishes anymore, as Much as I love sweeping somebody.
01:13:37.194 --> 01:13:45.369
Have you ever pulled off a really clean, clean sweep on somebody when they're so off-balanced and their their feet like slap the ground when you like scissors.
01:13:45.369 --> 01:13:49.122
Maybe you get a really nice hitters weep when you can perfectly time someone off balance.
01:13:49.122 --> 01:13:53.320
I guess it would be equivalent to a judo throw or judo you know somebody.
01:13:53.320 --> 01:14:01.970
I I love a nice, clean sweep where I end up back on top and I'm in control of the situation, whereas, like if it was like a fighting situation, I'm on top dropping bonds.
01:14:01.970 --> 01:14:03.734
I know I could if I wanted to, you know.
01:14:03.734 --> 01:14:04.956
So I'm not.
01:14:04.956 --> 01:14:11.989
I'm not as impressed anymore by like the force, the force, or I really, really I'm trying to become less.
01:14:11.989 --> 01:14:22.282
I'm really filtering out a lot of the fluff and just focus on just just the technique it you know, instead of like Trying to crush through everything you know.
01:14:23.416 --> 01:14:29.143
And then, when you understand what the techniques look like, then you have to ask yourself how are, how, are efficient?
01:14:29.143 --> 01:14:30.225
Are you in those moves?
01:14:30.225 --> 01:14:33.042
Are you huffing and puffing at the end of the like?
01:14:33.042 --> 01:14:43.904
Are you really, are you holding your breath when you're trying to do the attacks as a killer, breathing just a lot of times when, if you see me at tournaments and I'm coaching my folks, I'm reminding them to breathe.
01:14:43.904 --> 01:14:46.421
It's a bizarre thing, isn't it?
01:14:46.421 --> 01:14:50.274
But some of these guys they're holding the position I could see them holding, holding their breath.
01:14:50.274 --> 01:14:52.360
Yeah, breathing like that, your mind is not clearing.
01:14:52.360 --> 01:14:53.324
What's the worst case scenario?
01:14:53.324 --> 01:14:53.765
You tap.
01:14:53.765 --> 01:14:55.622
So why do you have to breathe so hard now?
01:14:55.622 --> 01:15:01.296
Worst case scenario you tap, we start again, but yeah, just just Again.
01:15:01.476 --> 01:15:02.920
It's hard to teach someone.
01:15:02.920 --> 01:15:13.587
Your learning curve, I think, really makes a positive direction, makes a positive change, when you're able to control your breathing and you're not running so much from the dog anymore.
01:15:13.587 --> 01:15:31.579
If your whole focus is just constantly running from the dog and I'm trying to tell you, hey, I'll put your right hand down, you're still running from the dog, so you're not even, you're not even conscious, you just on a fight or flight mode, yeah, but the moment that you can control your breathing and then you can really rationalize what, what's the end result here?
01:15:31.579 --> 01:15:35.515
Okay, end result here I get caught, I tap, and then I go back and I do my homework.
01:15:35.515 --> 01:15:36.176
How did I get there?
01:15:36.176 --> 01:15:38.801
It's fine, but you don't have to.
01:15:38.801 --> 01:15:41.849
You don't have to hold your breath and be in a panic situation.
01:15:41.849 --> 01:15:48.264
You know, sit in a scenario the whole time you just tanking yourself, and then let's just say you just power out of it.
01:15:48.264 --> 01:15:52.814
Let's say you hold your breath and you do your one big push like a bench press and you get out.
01:15:52.814 --> 01:15:54.222
You got, you got shit left.
01:15:54.222 --> 01:15:54.786
Now you get.
01:15:54.786 --> 01:16:01.877
Okay, you got to turtle or something, but now you have nothing for the onslaught coming after that because you put it all in that one bump, you know.
01:16:01.877 --> 01:16:07.681
So maybe you just need to chill out, take an inventory my arms down, my arms, low neck is protected.
01:16:07.681 --> 01:16:09.306
Chill, just breathe for a while.
01:16:09.306 --> 01:16:11.886
You can't breathe, you can't open and contract your diaphragm.
01:16:11.886 --> 01:16:15.860
Well then, don't lay it on your back, get to your side, let your diaphragm breathe again.
01:16:15.860 --> 01:16:20.498
Yeah, make sense, yeah, so, yeah, it's little things like this.
01:16:21.119 --> 01:16:22.943
This is why, in the beginning for our white belts.
01:16:22.943 --> 01:16:24.324
Defense is the.
01:16:24.324 --> 01:16:26.229
This is what our two-minute drills are all.
01:16:26.229 --> 01:16:29.981
Defense, you know, get your movements down on on the defense side first.
01:16:29.981 --> 01:16:34.806
Anyway, you can't pass guard, none of your offense, it's all shit anyway, you'll never get there.
01:16:34.806 --> 01:16:37.579
You might know how to do it, but you'll never get there to apply it.
01:16:37.579 --> 01:16:38.805
And then you think you're not learning anything.
01:16:38.805 --> 01:16:41.555
Yeah, so defense first.
01:16:41.555 --> 01:16:45.179
Be a hard one to rape, right on the map.
01:16:45.179 --> 01:16:49.301
Be a hard one to rape and then, when you can control your breathing, now you can start thinking of countering.
01:16:49.301 --> 01:16:50.931
Now you can start thinking of sweeps.
01:16:50.931 --> 01:16:52.639
Now you can start thinking of attacks.
01:16:52.639 --> 01:16:56.009
But these are all things that are easy to say to the white belt.
01:16:56.009 --> 01:16:57.994
It's like I'm just trying to survive.
01:16:57.994 --> 01:16:58.555
I don't know.
01:16:58.555 --> 01:16:59.118
I'm trying to.
01:16:59.118 --> 01:17:00.582
I'm tapping to everything.
01:17:00.582 --> 01:17:02.386
I'm tapping to like side-control, pressure.
01:17:02.386 --> 01:17:05.435
How do I get these guys, you know deltoid off my face?
01:17:05.435 --> 01:17:09.052
That's smashing the side of my face and side-control you know, that kind of stuff there.
01:17:09.373 --> 01:17:12.100
So but it's time, wait.
01:17:12.341 --> 01:17:24.539
This, this art is very special in that you really appreciate Other people, appreciate your belt colors in this, because they know what you've had to invest the time and and the sacrifice You've had to make.
01:17:24.539 --> 01:17:26.375
Most especially, again, the kids.
01:17:26.375 --> 01:17:35.384
I know I've always circled back to the kids but you know you have some of these kids that are like gray, gray, black and they're like, oh that adults, just a white belt, it's like no, you don't understand, that's not the same.
01:17:35.384 --> 01:17:38.895
You know, yeah, it's not, the adult will still kill you, you know.
01:17:38.895 --> 01:17:46.636
But but what they they do appreciate is they, they know that that they understand the sacrifice on their level.
01:17:46.636 --> 01:17:48.202
How much more adults doing it.
01:17:48.202 --> 01:17:55.067
And they look up to you, even if you're just, you know, one, two stripe white belt, they know, they know to appreciate and have respect for you.
01:17:56.536 --> 01:17:58.021
What's your most normal moment?
01:18:04.384 --> 01:18:08.409
Man, there's a lot of them and it's it's hard to just pick one because then it makes a.
01:18:08.409 --> 01:18:14.418
There's a lot of them.
01:18:14.418 --> 01:18:16.917
There's one.
01:18:16.917 --> 01:18:24.137
Well, the one that stands out obviously is promoting my son with the one that I couldn't tie the white stripe on, giving him.
01:18:24.137 --> 01:18:38.507
Tying that black belt, you know, fix a lot of the things that I beat myself up over, I would have to say, and that's probably why God kind of put it in my heart to take a picture with Brad.
01:18:40.435 --> 01:18:41.055
2012.
01:18:41.055 --> 01:18:50.471
Just had my spinal cord surgery and I woke up, got all these wires hanging draining the blood from my spinal cord and everything.
01:18:50.471 --> 01:19:02.677
I'm sitting in bed, I've got this, I've got this neck brace on and I'm sitting there and I'm thinking to myself I'm done, I'll never be able.
01:19:02.677 --> 01:19:05.363
You know, I'll never be able to go back to just again.
01:19:05.363 --> 01:19:07.167
You know, because I was root.
01:19:07.167 --> 01:19:19.806
It was a very messy operation and I'm sitting there in the room looking at the ceiling and I'm quarantined because this type of surgery you can't be exposed to any kind of disease.
01:19:19.806 --> 01:19:22.295
You know, it could end your life fairly easily.
01:19:22.295 --> 01:19:30.806
Yeah, but Brad worked for the hospital at Memorial at the time and so they let him through because he was part of staff, you know.
01:19:30.806 --> 01:19:34.926
So Brad and I have trained together for many, many years.
01:19:34.926 --> 01:19:46.402
And Brad Comes in there, I'm sitting there and I'm just kind of like, looking at the ceiling, like I'll never be able to teach kids class.
01:19:46.402 --> 01:19:47.645
The kids mean everything to me.
01:19:47.645 --> 01:20:04.617
You know, if I haven't already, if you haven't figured that out, and I already missed the kids so much and I was thinking myself, man, the surgeon had come in and told me that they they had to do a lot more than the original Discs.
01:20:04.617 --> 01:20:13.381
It was supposed to be C3 and 4, but they had to get C3, 4, 5 and 6 out then put in cadaver bones After they got to the tumor in the spinal cord.
01:20:13.381 --> 01:20:16.568
So he said that, you know, swallowing would be an issue.
01:20:16.568 --> 01:20:25.086
He said that, you know, depending on on the healing process, might not have any mobility in the neck because of the metal plate and the screws, you know.
01:20:25.086 --> 01:20:35.154
So when he left, I'm sitting there just kind of like, like man, god, you could have taken me out at brain surgery, because I was paralyzed coming out of brain surgery.
01:20:35.154 --> 01:20:40.805
I had no function of my legs, for it took me six months to walk four months.
01:20:40.805 --> 01:20:42.829
Note, my speech was all messed up.
01:20:42.829 --> 01:20:46.980
Yeah, so I was in a walker for so it really took me out and I'm like, man, I'm done.
01:20:47.743 --> 01:20:55.667
So Brad comes in and he goes hey, buddy, this Brad, the guy we took a picture with earlier yeah, I was like, what's up, man, he goes.
01:20:55.667 --> 01:20:57.680
Well, you survived.
01:20:57.680 --> 01:21:02.764
And I was like, yeah, you know he's black belt at the time and he was a gorilla, black black belt.
01:21:02.764 --> 01:21:06.702
And I said, yeah, and he goes.
01:21:06.702 --> 01:21:07.423
Well, how long?
01:21:07.423 --> 01:21:08.125
Till you come back.
01:21:08.125 --> 01:21:11.474
I said, brad, I'm done, man, I'm done.
01:21:11.474 --> 01:21:16.671
And he looked at me, shake his head and goes you're not done, you're not done.
01:21:16.671 --> 01:21:17.534
His kids need you.
01:21:17.534 --> 01:21:20.029
Nobody can do that for the kids.
01:21:20.029 --> 01:21:20.734
I don't like those kids.
01:21:20.734 --> 01:21:24.569
I like those kids and you know the other instructors don't like them kids.
01:21:24.569 --> 01:21:28.788
He goes, we need you to come back.
01:21:28.788 --> 01:21:29.912
And I said, brad, I'm done.
01:21:29.912 --> 01:21:30.675
And he goes I got something for you.
01:21:33.021 --> 01:21:36.994
So he pulls out this book, because by Dave Camaro it's called submit everyone.
01:21:36.994 --> 01:21:40.733
And he sits bedside with me, hands me the book.
01:21:40.733 --> 01:21:45.724
See that I'm a fucking mess there, get out of here.
01:21:45.724 --> 01:21:56.314
He hands me this book and he says you might not be able to train with me now, but you better start reading this book and you better have you ready with some shit when you get out, because we're I'm gonna fuck you up.
01:21:56.314 --> 01:21:57.177
He goes I'm not, don't?
01:21:57.177 --> 01:21:57.619
You, don't play this.
01:21:57.619 --> 01:22:02.115
I'm crippled bullshit with me, because when you and I start training again, I'm gonna fuck you up.
01:22:02.115 --> 01:22:03.439
So you baby ready, you know.
01:22:03.439 --> 01:22:04.320
And so I'm crying.
01:22:04.320 --> 01:22:11.396
That's me crying and and the nurse took the picture and there's this guy, kimura.
01:22:11.417 --> 01:22:17.639
You know I'm talking about the famous Kimura.
01:22:17.639 --> 01:22:26.942
His last name is Kimura broke Elio Gracie's arm like three times with the move in his head and he's like oh, I'm gonna fuck you up Elio Gracie's arm like three times with the move and everything like that.
01:22:26.942 --> 01:22:32.679
Here's what the people don't know about Kimura Badass judo.
01:22:32.679 --> 01:22:34.805
Everybody knows that judo was this thing.
01:22:34.805 --> 01:22:36.007
He was destroying everybody.
01:22:36.007 --> 01:22:41.037
He lost four judo matches and quit.
01:22:41.037 --> 01:22:49.962
He was so distraught, losing four in a row matches, he was done and you could look it up on Wikipedia.
01:22:49.962 --> 01:22:59.095
Had it not have been for his friends To talk to him, to shake the shit out of him, to say, hey, look, you're bigger than this, come back.
01:22:59.095 --> 01:23:00.216
He wouldn't have came back.
01:23:00.216 --> 01:23:03.144
We wouldn't have a lot of the moves we have today.
01:23:03.144 --> 01:23:09.759
He wouldn't have the movie showed you today had he not have Persevere through that.
01:23:11.055 --> 01:23:13.545
So your question was what's most memorable moments?
01:23:13.545 --> 01:23:21.668
Had Brad Messes me up still, had not he not have done what he did, we might not be here.
01:23:21.668 --> 01:23:22.992
Isn't that crazy?
01:23:22.992 --> 01:23:39.137
I Tell this to people all the time if you feel moved by the universe or God or whatever to say something positive and speak something positive in a person's life, do that shit, because you don't know the generations of kids and people after people that they could have a positive influence on.
01:23:39.137 --> 01:23:44.152
If you, if you don't let that word come out this that was what Brad did.
01:23:44.152 --> 01:23:44.835
It's crazy.
01:23:44.835 --> 01:23:46.123
He this wasn't even planned.
01:23:46.123 --> 01:23:47.635
He's not even part of our Academy.
01:23:47.635 --> 01:23:55.864
I just give him free reign to come over here because he's he's a brother to me, so he just happened to be here the day you came working out.
01:23:56.064 --> 01:23:57.368
Yeah, it's crazy.
01:23:57.368 --> 01:24:07.118
Like they say, you never know what someone's going to Do.
01:24:07.118 --> 01:24:08.002
Just a simple.
01:24:09.277 --> 01:24:11.247
Hey man yeah yeah.
01:24:11.247 --> 01:24:12.578
Yeah.
01:24:13.917 --> 01:24:19.440
Like I said, I know a lot of people, but maybe not as often as a shit.
01:24:19.520 --> 01:24:28.286
Yeah, yeah, if something inside you is saying, hey, go back and see how that person's doing and I'll see this with me all the time.
01:24:28.286 --> 01:24:37.484
Cashiers are probably the ones that get abused the most, and so I always try to make small conversations with cashiers Just to, because I know that's a tedious fucking job.
01:24:37.484 --> 01:24:42.542
You know, even at a McDonald's drive-through, nobody gives two shits about them.
01:24:42.542 --> 01:24:46.694
Usually you know to say hey, look, or to crack a joke to make them laugh a little bit.
01:24:46.694 --> 01:24:49.061
And so I I'm now.
01:24:49.061 --> 01:24:51.349
I'm now through all that I've been through.
01:24:51.349 --> 01:24:56.904
I know enough that as soon as I, god, put something in me or whatever that is for other people.
01:24:56.904 --> 01:25:06.795
We were at a liquor store, gas station, I was filling up gas and three kids were acting up over there and I went over there and talked to one of the kids.
01:25:06.795 --> 01:25:13.640
I felt moved to do so and got to know him, got to know his name and invited him out here.
01:25:13.640 --> 01:25:15.777
I'm hoping to see him, you know.
01:25:15.777 --> 01:25:20.228
But what if that's all he had at that?
01:25:20.228 --> 01:25:23.255
What if he was just looking for a sign?
01:25:23.255 --> 01:25:27.805
How many times have you been looking for a sign to just come up with a?
01:25:27.805 --> 01:25:30.442
Just one reason to keep pushing?
01:25:30.442 --> 01:25:34.064
I just need one good sign to keep pushing.
01:25:34.837 --> 01:25:39.295
We have another student that we gave an academic scholarship to Shit grades for the longest time.
01:25:39.295 --> 01:25:43.838
God has grades up to a 3.8, right, his aunt finally allowed him.
01:25:43.838 --> 01:25:44.862
He has no family.
01:25:44.862 --> 01:25:47.920
Long story back in Mexico Nobody, he's got nobody.
01:25:47.920 --> 01:25:49.064
This aunt's not even an aunt.
01:25:49.064 --> 01:26:02.064
This aunt is a relative of a cousin, of a cousin in Mexico who was a neighbor to two druggy parents who overdosed and died and left these two children to this neighbor.
01:26:02.064 --> 01:26:03.899
That's all.
01:26:03.899 --> 01:26:06.259
It has nothing and all brought.
01:26:06.259 --> 01:26:06.720
This is nothing.
01:26:07.536 --> 01:26:11.025
Last week comes in, he got his grades up.
01:26:11.025 --> 01:26:14.698
We gave him permission to come back here and train, because that's the deal you got to give us the grades.
01:26:14.698 --> 01:26:15.341
You got to do your part.
01:26:15.341 --> 01:26:20.113
And I want to tell you all his fingers were taped.
01:26:20.113 --> 01:26:22.234
He hadn't been training.
01:26:22.234 --> 01:26:23.860
So I'm like, how do you fuck up your fingers?
01:26:23.860 --> 01:26:25.801
He hadn't been training.
01:26:26.314 --> 01:26:34.800
And the story was that his uncle said all right, yeah, your aunt's going to allow you to go back and train, but I'm not going to give you a ride there unless you clean this entire backyard, chop wood or something.
01:26:34.800 --> 01:26:38.856
Yeah, he goes.
01:26:38.856 --> 01:26:43.222
If you chop this, yeah, I'll consider giving it right here.
01:26:43.222 --> 01:26:52.542
This kid, yeah, literally all his fingers had blood coming through the tape Just because he got his grades.
01:26:52.542 --> 01:26:56.542
And then they made it even harder for him by making him do some god-awful shit.
01:26:56.542 --> 01:27:09.215
But where would he be, where would he be, or where would any of these kids be, if Brad, at that moment, didn't sit bedside with me, hand me the book, to say, no, I'm not letting you quit.
01:27:09.215 --> 01:27:11.002
I'm not letting you quit.
01:27:11.636 --> 01:27:12.801
First of all, nobody likes these kids.
01:27:12.801 --> 01:27:14.460
Like you, like these kids.
01:27:14.460 --> 01:27:20.764
Yeah, you're not leaving this shit to us.
01:27:20.764 --> 01:27:31.186
And since then and I have seen it I've had a lot of those kids come drive here now, right, patrick?
01:27:31.186 --> 01:27:38.840
And yeah, yes, they come here and we tell the stories of how I went back.
01:27:38.840 --> 01:27:40.164
As soon as I came out of the hospital.
01:27:40.164 --> 01:27:43.002
I'll show you just to tell them I was okay.
01:27:43.002 --> 01:27:48.240
See that picture, I'm still in my neck brace Just to let them know I'm okay and I'm coming back.
01:27:48.240 --> 01:27:51.542
A lot of them didn't know if I was going to come back.
01:27:51.542 --> 01:27:57.217
I said I'm coming back, but none of them really knew that it was Brad, that Brad.
01:27:57.217 --> 01:27:58.863
Same thing with Kimura.
01:27:58.863 --> 01:28:01.322
You wouldn't know what, kimura, had it not been for his friends.
01:28:02.697 --> 01:28:27.243
Last question, sure, what advice do you have for the new person, the older person, the guy that's having physical yeah, gosh, if I could echo Bruce Lee's empty cup, god, that didn't make any sense to me.
01:28:28.295 --> 01:28:41.820
You know, when Bruce Lee talked about having empty cup, empty cup, every day you come, be willing to absorb, you know, be willing to absorb, embrace the suck we talked about earlier.
01:28:41.820 --> 01:28:46.515
Being a good student, not hurting other partners, that's okay, that's all.
01:28:46.515 --> 01:28:47.980
Should be common sense type stuff.
01:28:47.980 --> 01:28:55.485
But if I could just speak directly into the heart of the person that's like oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, because that's all they hear.
01:28:55.485 --> 01:28:59.122
By the way, a new person on the mat All they're hearing in their head is oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.
01:28:59.122 --> 01:29:00.117
That's all they're hearing.
01:29:00.117 --> 01:29:01.439
Right, turn that voice off.
01:29:01.439 --> 01:29:03.725
Turn that voice off.
01:29:05.295 --> 01:29:09.681
The worst thing that can happen is you just tap Don't be these idiots that tap too late and now you're hurt.
01:29:09.681 --> 01:29:11.145
You're hurt because you didn't tap.
01:29:11.145 --> 01:29:14.043
You typically it's because they didn't tap sooner enough, okay.
01:29:14.043 --> 01:29:18.506
And the other one is the person applying the attack maybe went a little overboard too.
01:29:18.506 --> 01:29:20.980
So empty your cup.
01:29:20.980 --> 01:29:21.561
Come here with them.
01:29:22.335 --> 01:29:23.460
Don't come with any expectations.
01:29:23.460 --> 01:29:26.301
Never compare yourself to someone else.
01:29:26.301 --> 01:29:32.506
Like I told you earlier, if you're going to compare yourself, think about what you do with.
01:29:32.506 --> 01:29:35.122
Do do If you had to fight yourself the first day you walked in.
01:29:35.122 --> 01:29:36.998
Give yourself that.
01:29:36.998 --> 01:29:42.622
Usually academies have like a free grace period or whatever A beginner, like two week trial or something like that.
01:29:42.622 --> 01:29:49.947
Even just that you'll know enough that you could destroy yourself the first day you walked in For sure.
01:29:49.947 --> 01:29:55.291
Like hands down, you are so empty cup, zero pride, zero ego.
01:29:55.291 --> 01:29:56.295
Check all that stuff at the door.
01:29:56.295 --> 01:29:59.009
That stuff's going to leave that shit.
01:29:59.009 --> 01:30:02.842
Leave that shit wherever you found it, leave it where it didn't do you any good anyway.
01:30:02.842 --> 01:30:06.962
You know, a person that's really good at this shouldn't have to shout it out.
01:30:07.163 --> 01:30:18.708
By the way, yeah, people say like, like the special, like the belt chasers, you should get yourself to be so good that everybody would question why you're not promoted yet.
01:30:18.708 --> 01:30:20.457
You shouldn't have to.
01:30:20.457 --> 01:30:23.886
You shouldn't have to say anything about like hey, so what's up?
01:30:23.886 --> 01:30:25.900
Am I going to get, am I going to get promoted?
01:30:25.900 --> 01:30:30.295
The way you roll and your character, people think it's just your performance.
01:30:30.295 --> 01:30:35.760
For me, it's not just your performance on the mat, it's your character on the mat, it's your character off the mat.
01:30:35.760 --> 01:30:45.028
Yeah, we know, we know, marcelo Garcia, let go of a few black belts because they developed into something that did not match what they're about.
01:30:45.028 --> 01:30:48.122
Right, those guys are still losers today considered, right?
01:30:48.122 --> 01:30:52.877
I don't even have to say their names, but they're talented, they know a lot of stuff.
01:30:52.877 --> 01:31:05.292
But if we want this sport to grow to its full potential, I believe A it should be looked at as a benefit to the community, not a development of bullies.
01:31:05.292 --> 01:31:13.157
We're not trying to arm bullies into giving more stuff to be even more lethal, so it should be what.
01:31:13.157 --> 01:31:16.041
What can you do to be a positive influence in the community?
01:31:16.041 --> 01:31:24.150
And then and then, secondly, what can we do to not just develop good kids to be good kids, to be better adults?
01:31:24.150 --> 01:31:26.801
What can we do to develop the adults to be better adults?
01:31:27.323 --> 01:31:30.216
For the kids here, you don't know whose kids, who.
01:31:30.216 --> 01:31:34.146
You come here on a Tuesday and you see all the kids running around and the parents.
01:31:34.146 --> 01:31:41.295
You'll see someone lighter skin than Anna holding a kid, dark as this table, and you think that they're just family.
01:31:41.295 --> 01:31:43.295
Everybody's kids here is everybody's kids.
01:31:43.295 --> 01:31:48.445
Everybody here is like Auntie and Uncle, like Mike, is like big brother, big uncle to every kid.
01:31:48.445 --> 01:31:50.176
That's how they are, that's how.
01:31:50.176 --> 01:32:06.970
That's how you don't know who's kid blonde, who if you just came here on a Tuesday, so for the new folks is you're there to absorb, absorb, absorb, absorb and then, as you develop your skill, what can you do to give back to to the Academy?
01:32:06.970 --> 01:32:09.380
You know, help out with the kids class, even if you're a white belt.
01:32:09.380 --> 01:32:12.295
You know you can help out with the kids class just being an adult presence on the mat.
01:32:12.295 --> 01:32:17.823
I always tell them, just because you just started be here, you might learn more in kids class than you do in adults class.
01:32:17.823 --> 01:32:20.283
Right, have you said that before, jesse?
01:32:20.283 --> 01:32:21.930
Yeah, you, you just might.
01:32:23.157 --> 01:32:25.382
So zero pride, zero ego.
01:32:25.382 --> 01:32:29.632
Empty cup every day, every day, always a student.
01:32:29.632 --> 01:32:30.274
I'm still a student.
01:32:30.274 --> 01:32:30.978
I study.
01:32:30.978 --> 01:32:34.130
I study at least an hour, hour and a half a day.
01:32:34.130 --> 01:32:35.295
45 minutes of it's in the shower.
01:32:35.295 --> 01:32:42.488
I let all my family take their shower and I run out the rest of the hot water and I have my, I have my phone on and I'm watching matches.
01:32:42.488 --> 01:32:49.386
I'm watching matches, current matches, not what happened 12 years ago in Abu Dhabi.
01:32:49.386 --> 01:32:50.168
None of that stuff.
01:32:50.168 --> 01:32:55.186
I'm watching what's going on right now, because I will never claim to know at all.
01:32:55.186 --> 01:32:57.429
I feel like I barely scratched the surface.
01:32:57.429 --> 01:32:58.295
You know how it is already.
01:32:58.295 --> 01:32:59.359
You open one door.
01:32:59.359 --> 01:33:00.162
Five more doors open.
01:33:00.162 --> 01:33:07.212
I opened that one, five more doors open and then you can't even find your back to the original door that you open, because now you're so engulfed in it.
01:33:07.212 --> 01:33:08.295
It just never ends.
01:33:09.037 --> 01:33:11.024
If anybody wants to get in contact with you.
01:33:11.537 --> 01:33:14.295
Sensei Studio headquarters on Instagram.
01:33:14.295 --> 01:33:23.170
There's a phone number, 209-485-4104, and everybody's invited to come.
01:33:23.170 --> 01:33:37.608
This is an open house, but we all we ask is that when you come here, bring a smile, have fun, and it's just know that it's a mutual blessing for you to come, because we get used to training with each other, right.
01:33:37.608 --> 01:33:40.199
When someone else comes, it's like I don't.
01:33:40.199 --> 01:33:41.965
I don't understand the whole flags thing.
01:33:41.965 --> 01:33:55.985
I understood it way back when, like, like, oh, we don't cross J because, whatever we're not that here Everybody's invited to come here and just as much as this is our home, like I told you when you first walked in, I could teach you the stuff I'm passionate about.
01:33:55.985 --> 01:33:57.868
That don't mean shit for you, right?
01:33:57.868 --> 01:34:07.681
Especially, we have size difference, okay, so I never let people leave here without being able to take a plate home, just like the Filipino, japanese tradition.
01:34:07.681 --> 01:34:10.295
With anybody who come to my mom's house, you always had to take a plate home.
01:34:10.295 --> 01:34:13.425
So I'll always ask at the end okay, where are they catching you?
01:34:13.425 --> 01:34:15.492
At your gym, and then we'll build on.
01:34:15.492 --> 01:34:16.295
We'll build on that.
01:34:16.295 --> 01:34:20.625
That way people feel like they got something they can use.
01:34:20.625 --> 01:34:22.515
That's tangible for them, you know.
01:34:22.655 --> 01:34:23.962
Thank you for coming out.
01:34:23.962 --> 01:34:26.704
You guys are welcome here anytime.
01:34:26.704 --> 01:34:28.371
Yeah, anytime, as much as you want.
01:34:28.371 --> 01:34:29.295
Greg, that's a good dude.
01:34:29.295 --> 01:34:33.458
I've known him for a while now and, well, anybody that's been under Mike.
01:34:33.458 --> 01:34:36.204
This is, this is the feel here is.
01:34:36.204 --> 01:34:39.099
I hope you feel the same like one world it's.
01:34:39.099 --> 01:34:39.761
We're like that.
01:34:39.761 --> 01:34:42.194
You know we don't have like, oh, you got to have this color gear.
01:34:42.194 --> 01:34:43.319
You got to.
01:34:43.319 --> 01:34:48.280
I like people expressing themselves through whatever color, gila Rash guard, I don't care.
