Experience on news Radio eleven seventy.
5
00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:20.480
WWVA starts now.
6
00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.039
The Bloomdaddy Experience. It's seven oh six on news Radio
7
00:00:24.280 --> 00:00:27.440
eleven seventy. I want to invite somebody very special to
8
00:00:27.480 --> 00:00:29.800
the show right now. His name is Bob Woodson, civil
9
00:00:29.879 --> 00:00:33.719
rights leader, community development leader, author, founder and president of
10
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:37.280
the Woodston Center. That's a nonprofit research and demonstration organization
11
00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:42.079
that supports neighborhood based initiatives to revitalize low income communities.
12
00:00:42.280 --> 00:00:46.600
He also launched the Center's seventeen seventy six Units campaign.
13
00:00:46.920 --> 00:00:49.399
He was in Lorraine earlier today giving a speech to
14
00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:52.799
lawmakers other individuals, and he's kind of enough to stop
15
00:00:52.840 --> 00:00:54.039
by the studio here today.
16
00:00:54.039 --> 00:00:56.399
Bob, thanks so much for coming in. Pleased to be here.
17
00:00:56.840 --> 00:00:57.439
I want to start.
18
00:00:57.479 --> 00:00:59.280
I mean, there's so many things to hit on here,
19
00:00:59.320 --> 00:01:05.799
but neighborhood empowerment has been huge for you, and solutions
20
00:01:05.879 --> 00:01:08.640
driven by the people within the community rather than top
21
00:01:08.680 --> 00:01:13.640
down government programs. How did your upbringing, how did your
22
00:01:13.799 --> 00:01:17.480
military service in the Air Force shape your philosophy?
23
00:01:18.359 --> 00:01:22.920
Well, thanks for asking, I think. I was born in
24
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:31.120
nineteen thirty seven in Philadelphia, blue collar neighborhood. I was
25
00:01:31.159 --> 00:01:34.959
the youngest of five children, and my dad fought in
26
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.359
the First World War. He was a Harlem Hellcats, but
27
00:01:40.439 --> 00:01:45.439
he was wounded there and suffered some illnesses that later
28
00:01:45.519 --> 00:01:48.280
took his life when I was nine years old. So
29
00:01:48.439 --> 00:01:52.239
I was left with my mother with a fifth grade education,
30
00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:56.480
the youngest of five children to raise. But the neighborhood
31
00:01:56.519 --> 00:01:59.840
was stable. As I tell people, in those days, you
32
00:02:00.200 --> 00:02:04.079
elderly people could walk freely without being fear of being
33
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:08.960
assaulted by their grandchildren, never heard guns fired, and ninety
34
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:12.039
eight percent of the households had a man and women
35
00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:16.120
raising children. But there are all kinds of other support structures,
36
00:02:16.360 --> 00:02:22.599
the Elks and other self help organizations. But it also
37
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:27.120
meant that I had to rely on my peers more
38
00:02:27.159 --> 00:02:32.599
than my blood family. And so I guess, and there
39
00:02:32.599 --> 00:02:35.960
were five of us. One of them, some of your
40
00:02:36.120 --> 00:02:39.400
listeners will know, was Matt Robinson. He was Gordon on
41
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:43.719
Sesame Street, okay, the first black guy on Sesame Street.
42
00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:47.319
His daughter is Holly Robinson, the actress who's married to
43
00:02:47.439 --> 00:02:51.439
Rodney Peake. I had a chance to eulogize him about
44
00:02:51.479 --> 00:02:53.240
fifteen years ago in Hollywood.
45
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:56.240
But so I guess I.
46
00:02:56.240 --> 00:03:01.319
Gained us understood why kids joined gangs or have organizations
47
00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:05.199
outside of the family, But we were all responsible.
48
00:03:05.240 --> 00:03:06.280
They were a year older.
49
00:03:06.039 --> 00:03:10.000
Than me, and when they graduated, I was left unaffiliated.
50
00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:12.319
So I dropped out of high school and went into
51
00:03:12.360 --> 00:03:15.840
the military. Didn't have much interest in education, but I
52
00:03:15.879 --> 00:03:17.680
was always good in math, so I had straight a's
53
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:22.400
because they have to study. And the Air Force, the
54
00:03:22.439 --> 00:03:25.599
first time I had left the Tri state area and
55
00:03:26.599 --> 00:03:31.479
went and really got my eye open, taught me discipline.
56
00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:36.960
I heard white people with Southern accents for the first time, interesting,
57
00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:41.840
and so it just exposed me to a whole new world.
58
00:03:41.840 --> 00:03:44.680
I was in the station in New York and then Mississippi,
59
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:46.759
so I had a chance to see racism in the raw,
60
00:03:47.800 --> 00:03:51.280
but it didn't freak me out because I was used
61
00:03:51.319 --> 00:03:54.240
to going around with my own folks anyway, and so
62
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:57.840
we just found our way. And so I finished high
63
00:03:57.879 --> 00:04:01.400
school in the military, and they trained me and went
64
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:07.000
to the space program and flew the first Earth satellite attempt,
65
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:12.520
and so I just kind of gat it matured. It
66
00:04:12.639 --> 00:04:17.680
really matured me. Plus it really integrated people with different
67
00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:18.279
walks of life.
68
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:21.839
You founded the Woodston Center, launched the seventeen seventy six
69
00:04:22.040 --> 00:04:25.879
Nights Initiative. Did you have an aha moment when you
70
00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:33.199
decided to focus on entrepreneurship and self help rather than, hey,
71
00:04:33.399 --> 00:04:36.519
let's rely on government welfare policy reforms.
72
00:04:36.680 --> 00:04:37.839
Yeah, well I just came out.
73
00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:43.040
I was a young civil rights activist after I finished
74
00:04:43.160 --> 00:04:48.079
graduate school, and I was leading civil rights demonstrations in
75
00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:52.600
Barred Rustern's hometown of Westchester, Pennsylvania. I met doctor King
76
00:04:52.680 --> 00:04:56.160
through him. But something happened to me. First of all,
77
00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:59.199
I parted company with the movement on the issue of
78
00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:03.240
force bussing for integration. I was against integration, well, at
79
00:05:03.279 --> 00:05:07.639
least as the opposite of segregation. Me was desegregation, not integration,
80
00:05:08.680 --> 00:05:11.519
So that put me at odds with the leadership. The
81
00:05:11.560 --> 00:05:14.920
second thing that turned me off was we led demonstrations
82
00:05:14.920 --> 00:05:18.879
outside of a pharmaceutical company, and when they desegregated, they
83
00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:23.079
hired nine black PhD chemists. Then I realized that class
84
00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:30.839
was interfering with race. And so when they and so
85
00:05:29.959 --> 00:05:33.199
I sensed right then that a bait and switch game
86
00:05:33.319 --> 00:05:36.959
was going on. Then a lot of the civil rights
87
00:05:37.079 --> 00:05:41.040
leaders became elected officials, and then I saw the sixties
88
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:45.319
poverty programs. I knew from the beginning that it was
89
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:50.279
going to be worse for poor blacks than anything that
90
00:05:50.360 --> 00:05:53.839
I witnessed experience under segregation, and I was proven to
91
00:05:53.879 --> 00:05:54.319
be true.
92
00:05:55.759 --> 00:05:58.360
Talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil rights leader, community
93
00:05:58.399 --> 00:06:03.879
development lead, author, founder, resident of the Woodson Center, when well,
94
00:06:04.120 --> 00:06:08.240
in your view, what are the biggest misconceptions people, especially
95
00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:11.439
outside the inner city context, have about how change actually
96
00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:13.160
happens in low income neighborhoods.
97
00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:14.040
Well, first of.
98
00:06:14.040 --> 00:06:18.439
All, the biggest myth is that with the deterioration that
99
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:21.759
occurred in the black community, somehow that's the legacy of
100
00:06:21.800 --> 00:06:26.079
slavery and Jim Crow. That is just not true, and
101
00:06:26.120 --> 00:06:29.560
there's evidence to support there that a lot of the
102
00:06:29.639 --> 00:06:33.839
decline that you're talking in the black family occurred as
103
00:06:33.879 --> 00:06:39.240
a consequence of the sixties, where welfare was not only encouraged,
104
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:45.879
but it was demanded and people were recruited into the
105
00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:52.199
welfare system, and the socialists Cloud and Pivot at Columbia
106
00:06:52.360 --> 00:06:56.439
University had this paper that says the best way to
107
00:06:56.480 --> 00:07:01.360
fight poverty is redistributed income. That's socialism. But we're going
108
00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:05.720
to use a black community as a battering ram. And
109
00:07:05.800 --> 00:07:07.600
so there was used to be a stigma of black
110
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:10.399
commune being a welfare but they changed that, and then
111
00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:13.920
the government started to recruit blacks, and so more blacks
112
00:07:14.720 --> 00:07:17.759
flooded into the welfare system in four years in the
113
00:07:17.800 --> 00:07:21.480
early seventies at a time when the unemployment rate for
114
00:07:21.560 --> 00:07:25.920
blacks was four percent, and so what they predicted was true.
115
00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:32.160
There was you separate work from income and school dropout
116
00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:34.680
rights out of wedlock births.
117
00:07:35.680 --> 00:07:36.399
All of that.
118
00:07:38.079 --> 00:07:42.439
Occurred as a consequence of federal policies that separated work
119
00:07:42.439 --> 00:07:46.360
from income. And then the civil rights leaders became elected
120
00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:49.920
officials in these cities and they were administering the twenty
121
00:07:49.959 --> 00:07:54.720
two trillion dollars in where seventy percent of the money
122
00:07:54.759 --> 00:07:57.680
goes to the paper who served the poor. So we
123
00:07:57.759 --> 00:08:01.560
created a commodity out of poor po and the civil
124
00:08:01.680 --> 00:08:04.639
rights people didn't raise any.
125
00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:09.680
How is what you just said received within the black.
126
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:13.959
Community among low income people, It is well received. There's
127
00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.279
this myth that somehow the elite leadership speaks for all
128
00:08:18.360 --> 00:08:23.240
Black America on issues of choice and education. Only eight
129
00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:26.800
percent of the leadership supports it. Sixty percent of low
130
00:08:26.839 --> 00:08:31.120
income black supported the leadership supports defund the police. Eighty
131
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:34.399
percent of low income blacks do not support defund the police.
132
00:08:35.879 --> 00:08:38.960
Sixty percent of blacks don't believe that racism is their
133
00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:44.559
biggest barrier to flourishing. The leadership doesn't belive it. So
134
00:08:44.600 --> 00:08:49.240
there's a huge gap in the black community. But you
135
00:08:49.279 --> 00:08:52.600
don't know that because low income blacks don't have a voice.
136
00:08:53.799 --> 00:08:56.960
I'm going to continue this conversation. I've got to take
137
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:58.639
a break. More of the interview coming up here on
138
00:08:58.679 --> 00:09:00.320
eleven seventy WWA.
139
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:08.200
Seven twenty one on the Blue Daddy Experience with Sam
140
00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:13.679
and Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA. Sam is a
141
00:09:13.799 --> 00:09:16.559
little under the weather. So if you thought yesterday was bad,
142
00:09:16.759 --> 00:09:19.080
she sent me a text at about twelve thirty this morning.
143
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:21.120
Of course I didn't get it until I got out
144
00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:23.720
of bed this morning that said that she was one
145
00:09:23.799 --> 00:09:29.879
hundred times worse than she was yesterday. So she's at
146
00:09:29.879 --> 00:09:31.480
home getting better.
147
00:09:31.559 --> 00:09:32.679
I guess is what we'll say.
148
00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:36.000
We're gonna take a look at some local news. There
149
00:09:36.039 --> 00:09:38.879
has been some sentencing that is being ordered for a
150
00:09:38.919 --> 00:09:43.480
Pittsburgh Ban convicted in a Wheeling cold case sexual assault.
151
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.879
Prosecutors say a twenty three year old woman was attacked
152
00:09:46.919 --> 00:09:49.600
in two thousand and eight, with little progress made in
153
00:09:49.639 --> 00:09:53.519
the investigation until twenty twenty. That was when DNA evidence
154
00:09:53.559 --> 00:09:55.759
from the crime matched with the man convicted in a
155
00:09:55.799 --> 00:10:00.559
twenty thirteen sexual assault. Joseph Jones was subsequently convicted in
156
00:10:00.600 --> 00:10:02.919
connection with the two thousand and eight crime and has
157
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:05.919
now been sentenced to serve thirteen to thirty five years
158
00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:08.559
in prison. For those of our friends that are up
159
00:10:08.600 --> 00:10:11.360
in the Weirton area, more than one thousand Whirton residents
160
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.919
will be without power today. It's part of a planned
161
00:10:13.960 --> 00:10:17.120
outage from Lawn Power. Those in the Wharton and Marlin
162
00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:21.240
Heights area will be impacted. Notifications will be sent to
163
00:10:21.279 --> 00:10:24.159
those affected, and the outage is expected to last from
164
00:10:24.200 --> 00:10:28.320
eight thirty this morning until two pm. Also today, flu
165
00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:31.720
shots are available free of charge and Wheeling Well pointed
166
00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:34.679
West Virginia will host a vaccine clinic at Wheeling Island
167
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:37.919
on south Stone Street. That's the casino, the hotel, the racetrack,
168
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:38.279
so on.
169
00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:38.759
And so forth.
170
00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:41.440
Shots will only be given to adults over the age
171
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:44.480
of eighteen and Anyone that gets a vaccine will also
172
00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:48.600
be gifted a twenty five dollars gift card. In Brook County,
173
00:10:48.600 --> 00:10:51.639
the commission is looking for a new commissioner. This comes
174
00:10:51.639 --> 00:10:54.600
as AJ Thomas has announced his plans to resign next year.
175
00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:57.840
Officials say there are certain requirements for those interested in
176
00:10:57.879 --> 00:11:02.080
the position. Interviews are expected to begin in January.
177
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:02.840
And then.
178
00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:05.240
This is kind of a fun one out of New Martinsville.
179
00:11:05.639 --> 00:11:09.200
The New Martinsville Police Department is hosting its second annual
180
00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:13.919
Hide and Seek from the Police event this Saturday. Participants
181
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:17.159
hide on foot while officers search for them in cruisers
182
00:11:17.240 --> 00:11:20.639
over a two hour period. Registration costs ten bucks and
183
00:11:20.679 --> 00:11:24.039
it's limited to two hundred participants. The event raises money
184
00:11:24.039 --> 00:11:27.080
for the department Shop with a Cop Christmas program, which
185
00:11:27.120 --> 00:11:30.759
provides underprivileged children with two hundred and fifty dollars each
186
00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:34.240
for holiday shopping. So sounds like a pretty fun event
187
00:11:34.600 --> 00:11:38.200
and for a super great cause. At ten dollars a piece,
188
00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:41.879
two hundred participants, that's going to raise some pretty good
189
00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:43.960
money and it sounds like a lot of fun. So
190
00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:46.960
if you're in the New Martinsville area and you want
191
00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:50.159
to be chased by the cops. I guess legally and
192
00:11:50.200 --> 00:11:52.519
pay to have it done. Yeah, there you go. I
193
00:11:52.519 --> 00:11:54.080
don't know if you win at prize or anything. If
194
00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:56.600
you stay away from them, it doesn't say it's kind
195
00:11:56.639 --> 00:11:58.639
of interesting. I'm sure you can look it up or
196
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:01.720
give them a call. Some other news that's out there.
197
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:03.519
And I know a lot of people from this area
198
00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:06.600
travel to the Myrtle Beach area, you know, whether it
199
00:12:06.679 --> 00:12:10.000
be maybe a little bit farther north like Holden Beach,
200
00:12:10.159 --> 00:12:16.120
Nag's Head, Sunset Beaches in North Carolina. But North Carolina
201
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:19.159
residents are being reminded that there's a new law which
202
00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:23.960
bans balloon releases. North Carolina Senate Bill twenty went into
203
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:27.879
effect on October first, which bans the organization of or
204
00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:33.240
participation in balloon releases. Violators or violations are punishable by
205
00:12:33.279 --> 00:12:35.960
two hundred and fifty dollars fines, and then the goal
206
00:12:36.039 --> 00:12:39.399
is to cut down on litter, as balloons are believed
207
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:42.639
to be one of the deadliest types of debris from
208
00:12:42.720 --> 00:12:47.320
marine wildlife. And if you are an Amazon person and
209
00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:50.840
you had the Amazon Web services, there was an outage
210
00:12:50.840 --> 00:12:55.799
on Monday, well, it disrupted eight sleep Smart mattresses, causing
211
00:12:55.879 --> 00:13:00.240
beds to overheat and then trap users in the upright position.
212
00:13:00.840 --> 00:13:04.080
The AWS failure affected he controls on the smart beds,
213
00:13:04.159 --> 00:13:08.759
leaving customers unable to cool down overheating the mattresses. Some
214
00:13:08.879 --> 00:13:12.080
owners of the five thousand dollars Pod five Ultra adjustable
215
00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:15.720
beds found themselves stuck with the mattresses locked in incline
216
00:13:15.720 --> 00:13:19.960
positions designed to reduce snoring and back problems. Eight Sleep
217
00:13:20.039 --> 00:13:27.240
CEO Mateo French Franceschetti apologized on social media, writing, the
218
00:13:27.320 --> 00:13:31.039
AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night,
219
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:34.279
disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want
220
00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:36.759
to provide and I want to apologize for it. The
221
00:13:36.799 --> 00:13:41.759
company restored full functionality to all mattresses by ten pm Monday.
222
00:13:41.879 --> 00:13:44.120
That was ten pm Monday, and they're working on an
223
00:13:44.120 --> 00:13:49.080
outage proofing on their technology. So if you have a
224
00:13:49.320 --> 00:13:54.360
one of those fancy beds five thousand bucks man, that's
225
00:13:54.399 --> 00:13:58.039
a I don't know if that's I haven't bought a
226
00:13:58.039 --> 00:14:00.240
bed for a long time, so I don't know if
227
00:14:00.279 --> 00:14:02.960
that's expensive or not. And the last time I bought
228
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:05.559
a bed, I think I bought it on sales. That
229
00:14:05.600 --> 00:14:10.320
would have been shoot going on maybe nine or ten
230
00:14:10.399 --> 00:14:13.279
years ago, so I mean, I wouldn't be able to
231
00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:17.320
tell you what a bed costs today. There's a great
232
00:14:17.320 --> 00:14:21.000
story out of Santa Cruz, California. There's a mischievous sea
233
00:14:21.039 --> 00:14:25.879
otter and it's causing more trouble for surfers. In Santa Cruz, California.
234
00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:28.840
Last week, there was an otter that reportedly bit a
235
00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:33.159
surfer's foot before taking over her surfboard. The harbor patrol
236
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:35.879
officers found the otter still perched on the board about
237
00:14:35.879 --> 00:14:38.840
twenty minutes later. The surfer was brought to shore safely
238
00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:42.399
and lifeguards later retrieved the board. Officials say that her
239
00:14:42.440 --> 00:14:44.840
skin wasn't punctured, so it was just like a little
240
00:14:44.919 --> 00:14:47.720
nip I would guess. The incident is reminiscent of a
241
00:14:47.759 --> 00:14:52.039
twenty twenty three where they had another otter that has
242
00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:56.639
been tagged it's Arter eight forty one, and that otter
243
00:14:56.840 --> 00:15:00.679
was known for stealing surfboards in the same area. Authorities
244
00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:04.639
have not confirmed if this is the same animal or not,
245
00:15:05.360 --> 00:15:09.120
And of course there's always we have Florida man stories,
246
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:13.799
and police in Florida say a man stole a fire
247
00:15:13.879 --> 00:15:17.919
engine while crews were inside Tampa Saint Joseph's Hospital on
248
00:15:17.960 --> 00:15:22.279
Tuesday morning. The suspect was identified as fifty nine year
249
00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:27.159
old Warren Scudder. Well after he stole the fire engine,
250
00:15:27.159 --> 00:15:30.440
he crashed it into an suv before officers caught up
251
00:15:30.480 --> 00:15:33.799
with him and blocked the engine's path. The driver of
252
00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:36.600
the suv was treated for hip pain at the hospital,
253
00:15:37.080 --> 00:15:40.639
and Scudder was arrested and charged with grand theft, auto
254
00:15:41.159 --> 00:15:44.600
and hit and run. So not a good day for
255
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:49.360
Warren Scudder. You know again, Sam is off. It's the
256
00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:54.159
bloom Daddy Experience seven twenty eight on news Radio eleven seventy.
257
00:15:54.559 --> 00:15:58.000
Sam's off today, trying to heal up and get better.
258
00:15:58.440 --> 00:16:03.200
So you know, there you have it. With Halloween coming up,
259
00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:08.000
Mars Inc. Has announced news for next year. The Snickers
260
00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:11.679
Crunchy Peanut Butter ice cream bar is set to arrive
261
00:16:11.720 --> 00:16:14.919
in twenty twenty six. The frozen treat features peanut butter
262
00:16:14.960 --> 00:16:20.360
ice cream layered with caramel and crunchy peanuts. Interesting that
263
00:16:20.440 --> 00:16:24.440
sounds kind of good. Actually, extra peanuts are also mixed
264
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:27.440
into the chocolate coating for added texture. The company said
265
00:16:27.480 --> 00:16:30.600
Snickers and TwixT ice cream bars are currently the top
266
00:16:30.679 --> 00:16:34.840
selling frozen novelties in convenience stores. So there you have it.
267
00:16:35.720 --> 00:16:38.080
Second part of the bloom Daddy Interview is coming up
268
00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:42.320
right after the news and we'll be back. It's the
269
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:45.879
bloom Daddy Experience with Sam and Otis News Radio eleven seventy.
270
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:56.600
WWVA News Radio eleven seventy.
271
00:16:56.799 --> 00:16:59.320
It's the bloom Daddy Experience. Welcome back to the bloom
272
00:16:59.360 --> 00:17:03.000
Daddy Show. Cotinuing my conversation with Bob Woodson, civil rights icon,
273
00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:07.000
community development leader, author, founder president of the Woodson Center,
274
00:17:07.079 --> 00:17:11.319
also launched the seventeen seventy six Units campaign to count
275
00:17:11.400 --> 00:17:13.279
the sixteen nineteen Project.
276
00:17:13.359 --> 00:17:14.960
Before I get to that, I want to ask you.
277
00:17:15.200 --> 00:17:16.279
I've always talked.
278
00:17:16.079 --> 00:17:18.160
About how the Republican Party needs to do a better
279
00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:21.480
job of reaching out to the black voter, especially the
280
00:17:21.559 --> 00:17:24.480
young black voter. So with that in mind, from a
281
00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:28.720
conservative leaning perspective, Bob, what should Republicans and conservatives be
282
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:32.880
doing differently to engage with black American urban communities.
283
00:17:33.880 --> 00:17:38.480
Republicans have Bill Bennett years ago said that when Democrats
284
00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:41.160
see blacks and poor people, they see a see of
285
00:17:41.240 --> 00:17:47.160
victims and conservativecy aliens.
286
00:17:46.799 --> 00:17:48.480
That's one way of looking at.
287
00:17:48.440 --> 00:17:51.119
I mean, I think what they got to understand that
288
00:17:51.319 --> 00:17:56.079
conservatives have proprietary and strategic interests that are compatible with
289
00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:01.480
low income black communities. Conservatives his own profit from the
290
00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:06.079
existence of poverty, and so they should do. There was
291
00:18:06.119 --> 00:18:10.279
a Republican of Dick Reardon in nineteen ninety at Los Angeles.
292
00:18:11.559 --> 00:18:14.519
He took some of his friends into East LA and
293
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:18.440
listened to low income and built the Reardon Center. And
294
00:18:18.519 --> 00:18:22.359
he was the first Republican to win the mayor's race
295
00:18:22.400 --> 00:18:26.160
in thirty five years because he understood if you plant charitably,
296
00:18:26.279 --> 00:18:29.440
you can harvest politically, but you don't harvest a plant
297
00:18:29.440 --> 00:18:33.359
in the same year. So he and he won by
298
00:18:33.440 --> 00:18:37.440
sixty percent of all the demographics because Dick Reardon came
299
00:18:37.480 --> 00:18:42.759
in and really included the people suffering the problem in
300
00:18:42.839 --> 00:18:47.799
their own rebirth and redemption. That's what Republican Steve Goldsmith
301
00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:55.279
a few years after in Milwaukee, I mean Indianapolis, Indiana
302
00:18:55.359 --> 00:18:57.319
did the same thing with the same results.
303
00:18:57.880 --> 00:19:00.440
I want to ask you you mentioned culture earlier in
304
00:19:00.480 --> 00:19:04.200
this conversation. The culture conversation, it's it's often kind of
305
00:19:04.240 --> 00:19:06.559
kicked to the curb and we talk about systemic or
306
00:19:06.599 --> 00:19:07.799
structural change.
307
00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:10.039
You speak about you spoke about it earlier.
308
00:19:10.079 --> 00:19:14.680
Family, faith, personal responsibility local institutions. In your estimations, how
309
00:19:14.759 --> 00:19:18.559
much of the solution lies in changing culture versus changing
310
00:19:18.920 --> 00:19:19.960
let's say policy.
311
00:19:20.200 --> 00:19:22.680
Culture's everything I think it was.
312
00:19:22.720 --> 00:19:29.079
Samuel Adams said that democracy and capitalism are but empty
313
00:19:29.160 --> 00:19:31.880
vessels into which we pour our values as a country,
314
00:19:33.480 --> 00:19:36.880
and that is true with culture. The greatest crisis facing
315
00:19:36.880 --> 00:19:41.119
America today is not racial. It is a moral and
316
00:19:41.160 --> 00:19:46.240
spiritual freefall that is destroying our children. According to Harvard study,
317
00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:50.359
the leading cause of death of Appalachian whites is prescription
318
00:19:50.519 --> 00:19:56.279
drugs homicide. For blacks and Silicon Valley it is suicide.
319
00:19:56.400 --> 00:20:02.640
The suicide rate among teenagers and Silicon times at national average.
320
00:20:02.359 --> 00:20:07.559
But elites keep bombarding our children, telling them a year
321
00:20:07.599 --> 00:20:10.440
after year that they live in a racist nation, and
322
00:20:10.480 --> 00:20:13.119
if you're white, you are an oppressor, and if you're.
323
00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:13.920
Black, you're a victim.
324
00:20:14.440 --> 00:20:19.000
After a while, these children begin to believe that perhaps
325
00:20:19.799 --> 00:20:24.480
they're unworthy, and so if a person devalues their life,
326
00:20:25.599 --> 00:20:28.039
they would be taking their own or take someone else's.
327
00:20:28.039 --> 00:20:31.279
They're different size of the same coin. And so we
328
00:20:31.400 --> 00:20:35.200
must we must set aside race. We must set aside
329
00:20:35.240 --> 00:20:41.559
our ideological differences and concentrate on the remralization of our
330
00:20:42.319 --> 00:20:43.720
society and our children.
331
00:20:43.880 --> 00:20:46.279
What you just said is very powerful, but it's so true.
332
00:20:46.519 --> 00:20:48.319
I mean, it is so true when you think about it.
333
00:20:48.319 --> 00:20:50.480
And along the same lines, Bob, if you could hand
334
00:20:50.880 --> 00:20:55.920
every young person in a struggling neighborhood one piece of advice,
335
00:20:55.960 --> 00:20:56.559
what would it be.
336
00:20:59.079 --> 00:21:02.440
That you are There are two ways to prevent people
337
00:21:02.480 --> 00:21:04.720
from competing. One is to tell them they don't have
338
00:21:04.759 --> 00:21:09.799
to ye and the other ones by law. What we
339
00:21:09.880 --> 00:21:11.960
can do is say to every young person that your
340
00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:16.079
destinies is in your own hands, that you can become
341
00:21:16.160 --> 00:21:20.480
agents of your own uplift. But values are caught, they're
342
00:21:20.519 --> 00:21:23.599
not taught. So what we do at the Woodson Center
343
00:21:24.319 --> 00:21:30.519
we recruit people who have overcome the challenges that a
344
00:21:30.559 --> 00:21:33.359
lot of our young people, and we put them in
345
00:21:33.480 --> 00:21:37.240
proximity to these young people so they can inspire them
346
00:21:37.279 --> 00:21:41.799
to become redeemed. America is a country of second chances.
347
00:21:41.880 --> 00:21:46.279
It is a country of redemption, and we have proven
348
00:21:46.960 --> 00:21:51.599
that children can be rescued from their self doubts if
349
00:21:51.640 --> 00:21:58.480
you expose them to mentors that have moral clarity and
350
00:21:58.839 --> 00:22:02.039
put them in relationship with them right, they can guide
351
00:22:02.119 --> 00:22:04.480
them to a more fruitful life.
352
00:22:04.519 --> 00:22:07.319
I'm talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil rights icon.
353
00:22:08.279 --> 00:22:13.200
Your work with seventeen seventy six Knights, it positions itself
354
00:22:13.400 --> 00:22:16.680
as the opposite of the sixteen nineteen project. Why did
355
00:22:16.759 --> 00:22:21.400
you feel it was so important to start seventeen seventy
356
00:22:21.440 --> 00:22:22.359
six Knights.
357
00:22:22.079 --> 00:22:24.680
Because a friend of mine told me that the current
358
00:22:24.839 --> 00:22:28.240
dialogue that we're facing is being driven by a group
359
00:22:28.279 --> 00:22:34.839
of elite whites, guilty whites who are seeking absolution from
360
00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:39.279
crimes they never committed, and by elite, entitled blacks who
361
00:22:39.319 --> 00:22:43.000
are seeking absolutions i mean, justices they never suffered.
362
00:22:44.480 --> 00:22:46.960
Yeah, that pretty much nails it.
363
00:22:47.519 --> 00:22:52.599
And so what we're trying to do is confront that reality.
364
00:22:53.640 --> 00:22:59.920
And since they were using black journalists to take race
365
00:23:00.799 --> 00:23:04.039
in America's birth defective slavery and use it as a
366
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:07.519
bludgeon against the country, we felt that the messengers to
367
00:23:07.680 --> 00:23:11.000
counter that must be black. But we didn't want to
368
00:23:11.279 --> 00:23:15.559
engage in any more gladiatorial debate. We wanted to offer
369
00:23:15.920 --> 00:23:22.000
a creative, inspirational narrative. So in our books that sold
370
00:23:22.039 --> 00:23:26.119
out within three weeks. Usually a book of essays don't
371
00:23:26.160 --> 00:23:30.559
sell like that, right, But because we told inspirational stories
372
00:23:31.160 --> 00:23:35.160
about how twenty blacks were born slaves and dyed millionaires.
373
00:23:35.920 --> 00:23:39.440
And we talked about how the black community in nineteen
374
00:23:39.519 --> 00:23:43.079
thirties to nineteen forty during the depression, had the highest
375
00:23:43.119 --> 00:23:47.480
marriage rate. So we emphasized in our books publication not
376
00:23:47.720 --> 00:23:51.519
how we suffered under the boot of slavery and Jim Crow,
377
00:23:52.039 --> 00:23:55.640
but how we achieved in the face of this opposition.
378
00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:59.319
Last question I have for you looking ahead ten years,
379
00:23:59.400 --> 00:24:04.039
What's one I don't know. Let's just say measurable change
380
00:24:04.759 --> 00:24:08.279
you hope to point to and say we did that.
381
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:13.519
I we have what we call the violence free zones.
382
00:24:13.880 --> 00:24:18.039
The violence we want to demonstrate that we can go
383
00:24:18.160 --> 00:24:23.599
into a whole neighborhood and transform and redeem it from within.
384
00:24:23.880 --> 00:24:25.920
We have islands of excellence.
385
00:24:25.960 --> 00:24:27.799
I can take you into one of the most violent
386
00:24:28.519 --> 00:24:31.799
areas of Washington, d C. And show you where not
387
00:24:31.880 --> 00:24:34.880
a single act of violence or crime has been committed
388
00:24:35.039 --> 00:24:39.759
in one hundred days. Through how yeah, we can bringing
389
00:24:39.799 --> 00:24:46.880
back bringing back people responsibility. What we call antibodies. That
390
00:24:46.960 --> 00:24:51.680
these grassroots leaders that I serve service antibodies. And the
391
00:24:51.680 --> 00:24:54.039
best way to cure the human body is a strength
392
00:24:54.079 --> 00:24:56.640
in its own immune system. So I would like to
393
00:24:56.680 --> 00:24:59.720
be able to have the resources to go into some
394
00:24:59.799 --> 00:25:03.160
of the he's really troubled neighborhoods and demonstrated how we
395
00:25:03.200 --> 00:25:07.839
can bring about a reduction and violence, crime and restore
396
00:25:08.400 --> 00:25:10.319
civil order in those communities.
397
00:25:11.079 --> 00:25:14.000
Bob, I'm sure everybody loved listening to you and Lorraine today.
398
00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:16.079
Thanks so much for stopping by my studio. Thank you
399
00:25:16.200 --> 00:25:21.519
been an honor. Bob Woodson, civil rights icon, community development leader, author, founder,
400
00:25:21.559 --> 00:25:24.400
president of the Woodson Center. Much more to come here
401
00:25:24.440 --> 00:25:27.000
on WTAM eleven hundred right after this.
402
00:25:34.519 --> 00:25:37.519
Seven fifty on the Blue Daddy experience with Sam and
403
00:25:37.559 --> 00:25:42.640
Otis otis flying solo this morning. Sam and you know,
404
00:25:43.559 --> 00:25:45.799
if you were listening yesterday, you realized that she was
405
00:25:45.839 --> 00:25:50.160
a little under the weather. And oh, around twelve thirty
406
00:25:50.240 --> 00:25:52.160
or so last night she sent me a text and said,
407
00:25:52.200 --> 00:25:53.839
of course I didn't get it until I woke up.
408
00:25:53.839 --> 00:25:56.599
This morning, she sent a text saying, hey, one hundred
409
00:25:56.599 --> 00:25:59.279
times worse than I was this morning. Don't think I
410
00:25:59.319 --> 00:26:01.880
can make it in I'm sorry. Well, you know you
411
00:26:01.920 --> 00:26:04.799
gotta do what you gotta do. I can make it sol.
412
00:26:04.920 --> 00:26:07.079
It's not the end of the world. It's a lot
413
00:26:07.119 --> 00:26:09.759
easier bouncing ideas off of each other but you know,
414
00:26:09.920 --> 00:26:12.839
we can make it work. And if you have anything
415
00:26:12.839 --> 00:26:15.359
you'd like to comment on, whether we've been talking about it,
416
00:26:15.400 --> 00:26:18.519
whether it's bloom Daddy's topic, whether it's something you else
417
00:26:18.559 --> 00:26:22.559
you want to bring up about White House renovation or
418
00:26:22.759 --> 00:26:26.119
the government shut down or anything of that nature, feel
419
00:26:26.160 --> 00:26:28.079
free to give us a call one eight hundred sixty two,
420
00:26:28.119 --> 00:26:32.200
four eleven seventy. Keep in mind Sam has access to
421
00:26:32.319 --> 00:26:36.039
the text number I don't, so it does not going
422
00:26:36.079 --> 00:26:38.319
to do you any good to text today, and she
423
00:26:38.519 --> 00:26:40.559
has access to the Facebook, so it's not going to
424
00:26:40.640 --> 00:26:43.279
do any good to comment on the Facebook page. So
425
00:26:43.400 --> 00:26:45.079
if you want to talk, you have to call me.
426
00:26:45.559 --> 00:26:47.079
Do it the old fashioned way and give us a
427
00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:49.720
call one eight hundred sixty two four eleven seventy. Be
428
00:26:49.920 --> 00:26:52.720
patient because as I've got everything in front of me,
429
00:26:53.559 --> 00:26:55.079
I may not be able to see the phone ring
430
00:26:55.160 --> 00:26:57.640
right away, So just you know, let it ring and
431
00:26:57.680 --> 00:27:00.640
I'll get to you eventually, you know. And it's no
432
00:27:00.759 --> 00:27:04.680
secret when Sam's here and we get into a topic,
433
00:27:04.759 --> 00:27:08.240
and sometimes we get into some music, and we had
434
00:27:08.240 --> 00:27:11.519
a couple of stories on some music related stuff, and
435
00:27:12.720 --> 00:27:15.319
while while bloom Daddy was in his interview, I just
436
00:27:15.359 --> 00:27:17.759
happened to be scrolling through some Facebook and I just
437
00:27:18.400 --> 00:27:20.039
there was a It just kind of pops up. I
438
00:27:20.039 --> 00:27:23.640
get this. It pops up on my timeline. It's called
439
00:27:25.200 --> 00:27:28.519
Charlie's Eighties Attic and it basically a lot of times
440
00:27:28.519 --> 00:27:31.640
it will give you a week or something, basically like
441
00:27:31.680 --> 00:27:35.039
the Billboard Top forty or whatever. So it pops up
442
00:27:35.079 --> 00:27:39.079
that it's the US Pop chart from October twenty second,
443
00:27:39.200 --> 00:27:40.079
nineteen eighty eight.
444
00:27:40.119 --> 00:27:41.039
It's the Top twenty.
445
00:27:41.680 --> 00:27:43.440
And I was looking down and I'm thinking to myself,
446
00:27:43.440 --> 00:27:45.279
you know, this is kind of in my wheelhouse my
447
00:27:45.359 --> 00:27:51.119
college days eighty eight and when I was DJing some
448
00:27:51.279 --> 00:27:53.720
frat parties or you know, we were having parties at
449
00:27:53.759 --> 00:27:56.880
our apartment or a friend's apartment and we would be
450
00:27:56.920 --> 00:28:01.160
set up our equipment and be the musical entertainment for
451
00:28:01.200 --> 00:28:04.160
the evening. Just looking at some of these songs that
452
00:28:04.200 --> 00:28:06.079
you know, they bring back some memories, but some of
453
00:28:06.119 --> 00:28:08.759
them you think about them and they're like, man, these
454
00:28:08.759 --> 00:28:12.119
were bad songs like Phil Collins a Groovy kind of Love,
455
00:28:12.799 --> 00:28:16.599
UB forty's Red Red Wine. But I just happened to
456
00:28:16.640 --> 00:28:22.839
go down and it spot eight and nine, both songs
457
00:28:23.279 --> 00:28:25.559
not the same song with two different versions but two
458
00:28:25.640 --> 00:28:28.440
totally different songs but with the same title Don't Be
459
00:28:28.559 --> 00:28:31.640
Cruel Bobby Brown at number eight and Cheap Tricks cover
460
00:28:31.720 --> 00:28:34.559
of the Elvis Presley's Don't Be Cruel at number nine.
461
00:28:35.119 --> 00:28:37.519
Just didn't get a chance to look it up, but
462
00:28:37.640 --> 00:28:41.119
to see if that's the first time that two songs
463
00:28:41.200 --> 00:28:46.720
with the same title but different songs were in the
464
00:28:46.720 --> 00:28:48.599
top twenty at the same time, actually in the top
465
00:28:48.640 --> 00:28:51.519
ten at the same time, So just curious. You know,
466
00:28:51.599 --> 00:28:54.519
some other songs on there, the Locomotion to cover by
467
00:28:54.599 --> 00:28:59.680
Kylie Minogue in Excess and Avertaris Apart Rod Stories Forever,
468
00:28:59.799 --> 00:29:03.920
Young bon Jovi's on there with Bad Medicine. So two
469
00:29:03.960 --> 00:29:07.480
songs from the Cocktail soundtrack, Don't Worry, Be Happy and
470
00:29:07.559 --> 00:29:11.000
Kokomo by the Beach Boys. So anyway, just a little
471
00:29:11.079 --> 00:29:14.079
just happened to catch my eye there. In case you
472
00:29:14.200 --> 00:29:16.799
missed it, Mattel, if you're a Barbie collector, you might
473
00:29:16.839 --> 00:29:19.880
want to get into this because Barbie has a new
474
00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:24.480
inspired doll by Fleetwood Max singer Stevie Nicks, and it's
475
00:29:24.559 --> 00:29:27.839
kind of highlighting the solo career. It's called the Stevie
476
00:29:27.920 --> 00:29:31.880
Nicks Bella Donna Barbie marks the forty third anniversary of
477
00:29:31.920 --> 00:29:35.960
her debut solo album Belladonna, which featured the hits Edge
478
00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:38.640
of seventeen and Stopped Dragging My Heart Around with Tom Petty.
479
00:29:39.279 --> 00:29:42.640
The doll depicts Stevie Nicks in the white flowing dress
480
00:29:42.839 --> 00:29:46.279
from the nineteen eighty one album cover. So, you know,
481
00:29:47.039 --> 00:29:51.920
Barbie's very iconic, very collectible. Maybe you're not a Barbie collector,
482
00:29:51.960 --> 00:29:55.079
but you're a Fleetwood Mac fan. Maybe a Stevie Nicks fan,
483
00:29:56.200 --> 00:29:58.519
rock and roll fan might be one. Just a kind
484
00:29:58.559 --> 00:30:02.839
of maybe make that purchase and put it away for
485
00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:05.920
your kids or grandkids for down the road.
486
00:30:06.960 --> 00:30:07.119
You know.
487
00:30:07.160 --> 00:30:10.880
We keep it on the music theme. There's a survey
488
00:30:10.920 --> 00:30:14.400
of two thousand music lovers. They found that thirty eight
489
00:30:14.440 --> 00:30:19.240
percent of Americans believe streaming music is superior to physical media.
490
00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:23.440
I don't know if it's superior. It's a lot easier
491
00:30:23.480 --> 00:30:26.799
to access, let's put it that way. Fourteen percent think
492
00:30:26.960 --> 00:30:29.799
listening to the radio is the best way to consume music,
493
00:30:30.079 --> 00:30:33.319
thank you, and fifteen percent prefer to hear their favorite
494
00:30:33.400 --> 00:30:37.759
artists live. The average respondent spends two hundred and seventy
495
00:30:37.759 --> 00:30:40.160
four bucks on music in a year, including concerts and
496
00:30:40.200 --> 00:30:43.799
streaming services well anymore two hundred and seventy four bucks.
497
00:30:43.839 --> 00:30:47.000
If you had a one concert, that could be the ticket. However,
498
00:30:47.079 --> 00:30:49.359
the Talker Research poll found that thirty five percent of
499
00:30:49.400 --> 00:30:52.960
adults believe a month of streaming shouldn't cost more than
500
00:30:53.039 --> 00:30:56.440
ten bucks, but fifty four percent would pay twenty for
501
00:30:56.519 --> 00:31:00.599
a vinyl record. Says here, streaming is great because you
502
00:31:00.640 --> 00:31:03.599
can obtain nearly anything you require almost all the time.
503
00:31:04.200 --> 00:31:07.480
That's quote by Steve Nixon of Free Jazz Lessons dot Com.
504
00:31:07.880 --> 00:31:10.880
He also said with physical music, the experience is different.
505
00:31:10.960 --> 00:31:14.640
If you buy something physical, you support the artists, which
506
00:31:14.680 --> 00:31:17.440
is true. And I think that's one of the biggest
507
00:31:17.480 --> 00:31:23.920
complaints that artists have about streaming is the the fact
508
00:31:23.960 --> 00:31:27.559
that they're not always getting you know, they're there due
509
00:31:27.720 --> 00:31:30.200
their due, their fair share of the money. Let's put
510
00:31:30.200 --> 00:31:35.119
it that way. When it comes to live music, there
511
00:31:35.160 --> 00:31:38.079
are and I'll just I'll throw this out there.
512
00:31:38.119 --> 00:31:38.319
You know.
513
00:31:39.119 --> 00:31:42.799
Two weeks ago went and saw Elvis Costello here at
514
00:31:42.799 --> 00:31:47.000
the Capitol Theater. And I love Elvis Costello, but I
515
00:31:47.079 --> 00:31:51.000
thought the live show was not It was not what
516
00:31:51.119 --> 00:31:57.359
I expected. And I think there's some people that would
517
00:31:57.359 --> 00:32:02.400
agree with me, the musicians. She was great, The music
518
00:32:02.519 --> 00:32:04.480
was okay, you know, was was good. I mean it
519
00:32:04.519 --> 00:32:08.519
was his songs, you know, but like the show itself
520
00:32:09.160 --> 00:32:13.680
just didn't get you involved. And you know, I think
521
00:32:13.720 --> 00:32:15.559
that's a big thing when you when you go to
522
00:32:15.559 --> 00:32:18.039
see a live artist. I mean, I've seen, good God,
523
00:32:18.079 --> 00:32:21.880
I don't know how many concerts I've seen. I've probably seen,
524
00:32:22.680 --> 00:32:25.240
you know, twenty to twenty five rock and roll Hall
525
00:32:25.279 --> 00:32:31.119
of famers play Springsteen, Mellencamp, I've seen the Stones, I've
526
00:32:31.119 --> 00:32:35.000
seen Rod Stewart, I've seen you know my good it
527
00:32:35.039 --> 00:32:39.079
is Tom Petty, you know, and they all do it differently. Obviously,
528
00:32:39.720 --> 00:32:41.599
Bruce has claimed the fame as you know that he
529
00:32:41.640 --> 00:32:44.640
plays a three hour show minimum. You know, if it's
530
00:32:44.720 --> 00:32:48.839
under three hours, you got jypped. But and Mellencamp at
531
00:32:48.839 --> 00:32:50.160
one point in time was a two to two and
532
00:32:50.200 --> 00:32:53.440
a half hour guy before his health issues kicked in.
533
00:32:53.720 --> 00:32:56.640
But you know, I mean, if you go see I
534
00:32:56.680 --> 00:32:58.759
have a friend that when he goes to a concert,
535
00:32:58.799 --> 00:33:03.240
he wants to see the artist performed the song exactly
536
00:33:03.279 --> 00:33:07.559
like it was on the on the recorded version, And
537
00:33:07.640 --> 00:33:10.039
I just don't know how you you know, first off,
538
00:33:10.480 --> 00:33:12.400
that would be that's great if you just want to
539
00:33:12.440 --> 00:33:15.759
sing along. But I think the interaction with the crowd
540
00:33:15.920 --> 00:33:19.759
sometimes extending it, adding in an extra verse or you
541
00:33:19.759 --> 00:33:24.119
know some you know, an extra guitar solo or something
542
00:33:24.160 --> 00:33:27.000
of that nature. You know, it mixes it mixes it
543
00:33:27.079 --> 00:33:28.519
up a little bit. And I think that a lot
544
00:33:28.559 --> 00:33:32.160
of times. And I can tell you this from seeing Springsteen.
545
00:33:32.279 --> 00:33:35.400
You know that he might take a three minute song
546
00:33:35.440 --> 00:33:38.920
and turn it into a ten minute you know, this
547
00:33:39.039 --> 00:33:42.359
ten minute epic version of it, and you know it
548
00:33:42.559 --> 00:33:45.920
just live music. You just it just kind of gets.
549
00:33:45.759 --> 00:33:47.640
You in the mood.
550
00:33:47.359 --> 00:33:50.440
It gets you to where you need to be. Anybody
551
00:33:50.440 --> 00:33:53.400
that has been to Jamboree and the Hills, there are
552
00:33:53.480 --> 00:33:56.400
good live performers and there are bad live performers, so
553
00:33:57.319 --> 00:33:58.559
you know, you know who they are.
554
00:33:58.599 --> 00:33:59.759
And if you go to.
555
00:34:00.039 --> 00:34:01.000
N you know what you like.
556
00:34:01.160 --> 00:34:04.480

566
00:34:46.239 --> 00:34:49.679
News Radio eleven seventy gets the bloom Daddy Experience. Hey,
567
00:34:49.679 --> 00:34:51.760
it's eight six, let's get this hour rolling.
568
00:34:52.480 --> 00:34:52.920
I want to.
569
00:34:52.840 --> 00:34:55.079
Invite somebody very special to the show right now. His
570
00:34:55.199 --> 00:34:59.800
name is Bob Woodson, civil rights leader, community development leader, author, founder,
571
00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:02.679
resident of the Woodston Center. That's a nonprofit research and
572
00:35:02.719 --> 00:35:07.639
demonstration organization that supports neighborhood based initiatives to revitalize low
573
00:35:07.719 --> 00:35:12.079
income communities. He also launched the Centers seventeen seventy six
574
00:35:12.360 --> 00:35:15.639
Units campaign. He was in Lorraine earlier today giving a
575
00:35:15.679 --> 00:35:19.199
speech to lawmakers other individuals, and he's kind enough to
576
00:35:19.199 --> 00:35:20.719
stop by the studio here today.
577
00:35:20.719 --> 00:35:23.000
Bob, thanks so much for coming in. Pleased to be here.
578
00:35:23.480 --> 00:35:24.119
I want to start.
579
00:35:24.159 --> 00:35:25.920
I mean, there's so many things to hit on here,
580
00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:32.440
but neighborhood empowerment has been huge for you, and solutions
581
00:35:32.519 --> 00:35:35.239
driven by the people within the community rather than top
582
00:35:35.280 --> 00:35:40.239
down government programs. How did your upbringing, how did your
583
00:35:40.360 --> 00:35:44.039
military service in the Air Force shape your philosophy.
584
00:35:44.920 --> 00:35:49.440
Well, thanks for asking. I think. I was born in.
585
00:35:51.840 --> 00:35:57.519
Nineteen thirty seven in Philadelphia, a blue collar neighborhood. I
586
00:35:57.559 --> 00:36:01.320
was the youngest of five children, and my dad fought
587
00:36:01.320 --> 00:36:05.079
in the First World War. He was a Harlem Hellcats,
588
00:36:06.719 --> 00:36:11.480
but he was wounded there and suffered some illnesses that
589
00:36:11.639 --> 00:36:14.039
later took his life when I was nine years old.
590
00:36:14.599 --> 00:36:17.920
So I was left with my mother with a fifth
591
00:36:17.920 --> 00:36:22.079
grade education, the youngest of five children to raise. But
592
00:36:22.159 --> 00:36:26.119
the neighborhood was stable, as I tell people, in those days,
593
00:36:26.559 --> 00:36:30.440
elderly people could walk freely without being fear of being
594
00:36:30.440 --> 00:36:35.320
assaulted by their grandchildren, never heard guns fired, and ninety
595
00:36:35.719 --> 00:36:38.119
eight percent of the households had a man and.
596
00:36:38.159 --> 00:36:39.239
Women raising children.
597
00:36:40.159 --> 00:36:42.800
But there were all kinds of other support structures, the
598
00:36:42.880 --> 00:36:48.320
Elks and other self help organizations.
599
00:36:48.400 --> 00:36:49.480
But it also meant.
600
00:36:49.280 --> 00:36:53.679
That I had to rely on my peers more than
601
00:36:53.719 --> 00:36:59.119
my blood family. And so I guess, and there were
602
00:36:59.199 --> 00:37:02.960
five of us. One of them, some of your listeners
603
00:37:03.000 --> 00:37:04.920
will know, was Matt Robinson.
604
00:37:05.000 --> 00:37:06.719
He was Gordon on Sesame.
605
00:37:06.320 --> 00:37:10.480
Street, okay, the first black guy on Sesame Street. His
606
00:37:11.159 --> 00:37:14.400
daughter is Holly Robinson, the actress who's married to Rodney Peake.
607
00:37:15.480 --> 00:37:18.599
I had a chance to eulogize him about fifteen years
608
00:37:18.599 --> 00:37:19.599
ago in Hollywood.
609
00:37:20.599 --> 00:37:22.000
But so I guess I.
610
00:37:22.599 --> 00:37:27.679
Gained us understood why kids joined gangs or have organizations
611
00:37:27.719 --> 00:37:31.719
outside of the family, But we were all responsible. They
612
00:37:31.719 --> 00:37:33.960
were a year older than me, and when they graduated,
613
00:37:34.880 --> 00:37:37.960
I was left unaffiliated. So I dropped out of high
614
00:37:37.960 --> 00:37:41.079
school and went into the military. Didn't have much interest
615
00:37:41.119 --> 00:37:43.239
in education, but I was always good in math, so
616
00:37:43.280 --> 00:37:46.679
I had straight a's because they have to study. And
617
00:37:46.800 --> 00:37:49.840
the Air Force, the first time I had left the
618
00:37:49.880 --> 00:37:55.639
Tri state area and went and really got my eye open,
619
00:37:56.800 --> 00:38:00.440
taught me discipline. I heard white people with Southern accents
620
00:38:00.480 --> 00:38:07.199
for the first time, interesting, and so it just exposed
621
00:38:07.239 --> 00:38:09.079
me to a whole new world. I was in station
622
00:38:09.239 --> 00:38:11.480
in New York and then Mississippi, so I had a
623
00:38:11.559 --> 00:38:15.519
chance to see racism in the raw, but it didn't
624
00:38:15.559 --> 00:38:18.400
freak me out because I was used to going around
625
00:38:18.440 --> 00:38:21.480
with my own folks anyway, and so we just found
626
00:38:21.480 --> 00:38:25.440
our way. And so I finished high school in the military,
627
00:38:25.719 --> 00:38:28.920
and they trained me and went to the space program
628
00:38:29.039 --> 00:38:36.599
and flew the first Earth satellite attempt, and so I
629
00:38:36.159 --> 00:38:39.920
just kind of gat it matured. It really matured me.
630
00:38:40.800 --> 00:38:44.679
Plus it really integrated people with different walks of life.
631
00:38:45.119 --> 00:38:48.280
You founded the Woodston Center, launched the seventeen seventy six
632
00:38:48.480 --> 00:38:52.280
Nights Initiative. Did you have an Aha moment when you
633
00:38:52.360 --> 00:38:59.599
decided to focus on entrepreneurship and self help rather than hey,
634
00:38:59.760 --> 00:39:02.920
let rely on government welfare policy reforms?
635
00:39:03.079 --> 00:39:05.239
Yeah, well, I this came out. I was a young
636
00:39:05.840 --> 00:39:07.039
civil rights.
637
00:39:06.760 --> 00:39:13.039
Activist after I finished graduate school, and I was leading
638
00:39:13.079 --> 00:39:17.480
civil rights demonstrations in Barred Rustern's hometown of Westchester, Pennsylvania.
639
00:39:18.159 --> 00:39:21.760
I met doctor King through him. But something happened to me.
640
00:39:21.920 --> 00:39:25.119
First of all, I parted company with the movement on
641
00:39:25.119 --> 00:39:29.519
the issue of forced bussing for integration. I was against integration, well,
642
00:39:29.559 --> 00:39:33.199
at least as the opposite of segregation. Me was desegregation,
643
00:39:33.400 --> 00:39:37.079
not integrated, So that put me at odds with the leadership.
644
00:39:37.800 --> 00:39:40.559
The second thing that turned me off was we led
645
00:39:40.599 --> 00:39:45.159
demonstrations outside of a pharmaceutical company, and when they desegregated,
646
00:39:45.199 --> 00:39:48.960
they hired nine black PhD chemists. Then I realized that
647
00:39:49.119 --> 00:39:56.119
class was interfering with race. And so when they and
648
00:39:56.159 --> 00:39:59.360
so I sensed right then that a bait and switch
649
00:39:59.440 --> 00:40:03.199
game was going on. Then a lot of the civil
650
00:40:03.280 --> 00:40:06.880
rights leaders became elected officials, and then I saw the
651
00:40:06.960 --> 00:40:09.000
sixties poverty programs.
652
00:40:09.039 --> 00:40:10.920
I knew from the beginning.
653
00:40:11.159 --> 00:40:14.840
That it was going to be worse for poor blacks
654
00:40:15.960 --> 00:40:19.679
than anything that I witnessed experience under segregation, and I
655
00:40:19.760 --> 00:40:20.800
was proven to be true.
656
00:40:22.239 --> 00:40:24.880
Talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil rights leader, community
657
00:40:24.880 --> 00:40:30.400
development leader, author, founder, president of the Woodson Center, when well,
658
00:40:30.639 --> 00:40:34.760
in your view, what are the biggest misconceptions people, especially
659
00:40:34.760 --> 00:40:37.960
outside the inner city context, have about how change actually
660
00:40:38.000 --> 00:40:39.760
happens in low income neighborhoods.
661
00:40:40.039 --> 00:40:43.159
Well, first of all, the biggest myth is that with
662
00:40:43.920 --> 00:40:47.639
the deterioration that occurred in the black community, somehow that's
663
00:40:47.679 --> 00:40:50.800
the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. That is just
664
00:40:50.920 --> 00:40:55.719
not true, and there's evidence to support there that a
665
00:40:55.760 --> 00:40:58.400
lot of the decline that you're talking in the black
666
00:40:58.440 --> 00:41:04.360
family as a consequence of the sixties, where welfare was
667
00:41:04.639 --> 00:41:11.159
not only encouraged, but it was demanded and people were
668
00:41:11.519 --> 00:41:17.440
recruited into the welfare system, and the socialists Cloud and
669
00:41:17.480 --> 00:41:22.599
Pivot at Columba University had this paper that says the
670
00:41:22.679 --> 00:41:27.400
best way to fight poverty is redistributed income that's socialism.
671
00:41:27.519 --> 00:41:30.719
But we're going to use a black community as a
672
00:41:30.760 --> 00:41:33.599
battering ram. And so there was used to be a
673
00:41:33.639 --> 00:41:35.800
stigma of black commune on being a welfare but they
674
00:41:35.880 --> 00:41:39.559
changed that and then the government started to recruit blacks,
675
00:41:39.639 --> 00:41:43.719
and so more blacks flooded into the welfare system in
676
00:41:43.920 --> 00:41:47.320
four years in the early seventies, at a time when
677
00:41:47.360 --> 00:41:51.199
the unemployment rate for blacks was four percent, and so
678
00:41:51.360 --> 00:41:54.840
what they predicted was true. There was you separate work
679
00:41:54.840 --> 00:42:01.760
from income and school dropout rights out of wedlock births.
680
00:42:02.599 --> 00:42:03.239
All of that.
681
00:42:05.000 --> 00:42:09.360
Occurred as a consequence of federal policies that separated work
682
00:42:09.400 --> 00:42:13.320
from income. And then the civil rights leaders became elected
683
00:42:13.360 --> 00:42:16.880
officials in these cities and they were administering the twenty
684
00:42:16.920 --> 00:42:21.719
two trillion dollars and where seventy percent of the money
685
00:42:21.760 --> 00:42:24.599
goes to the paper who served the poor. So we
686
00:42:24.760 --> 00:42:28.599
created a commodity out of poor people, and the civil
687
00:42:28.679 --> 00:42:34.920
rights people didn't raise any.
688
00:42:33.880 --> 00:42:37.480
How is what you just said received within the black community.
689
00:42:38.000 --> 00:42:41.199
Among low income people, it is well received. There's this
690
00:42:41.440 --> 00:42:45.760
myth that somehow the elite leadership speaks for all Black
691
00:42:45.760 --> 00:42:50.800
America on issues of choice and education. Only eight percent
692
00:42:50.840 --> 00:42:54.239
of the leadership supports it. Sixty percent of low income
693
00:42:54.280 --> 00:42:58.639
black supported the leadership supports defund the police. Eighty percent
694
00:42:58.679 --> 00:43:01.480
of low income Blacks do not support defund the police.
695
00:43:03.000 --> 00:43:06.000
Sixty percent of blacks don't believe that racism is the
696
00:43:06.079 --> 00:43:11.440
biggest barrier to flourishing. The leadership, oh doesn't believe it.
697
00:43:11.559 --> 00:43:15.440
So there's a huge gap in the black community. But
698
00:43:16.239 --> 00:43:19.079
you don't know that because low income blacks don't have
699
00:43:19.119 --> 00:43:19.719
a voice.
700
00:43:20.880 --> 00:43:24.000
I'm going to continue this conversation. I've got to take
701
00:43:24.000 --> 00:43:25.679
a break. More of the interview coming up here on
702
00:43:25.719 --> 00:43:32.960
eleven seventy wwvs.
703
00:43:31.880 --> 00:43:34.960
Hey twenty on this Thursday, The Blue Daddy Experience of
704
00:43:35.039 --> 00:43:39.960
Sam and otis news Radio eleven seventy wwva otis flying solo.
705
00:43:40.079 --> 00:43:43.360
Sam's on taking the day off to kind of hel
706
00:43:43.480 --> 00:43:47.000
up not feeling well, and if you listened yesterday, you
707
00:43:47.039 --> 00:43:50.679
know she sounded like crap. So before we went to
708
00:43:50.760 --> 00:43:53.400
the top of the hour news break, I was talking
709
00:43:53.400 --> 00:43:56.000
about some music, live music, so on and so forth,
710
00:43:56.559 --> 00:43:59.320
and got a phone call from Craig from Bysville and
711
00:43:59.400 --> 00:44:01.119
he joins this now good morning, Craig.
712
00:44:02.199 --> 00:44:06.920
Warning the subject he was talking about I and the
713
00:44:07.000 --> 00:44:11.360
songs you read off you know, I grew up in
714
00:44:11.400 --> 00:44:14.400
the sixties and seventies, and it just seems like from
715
00:44:14.480 --> 00:44:19.000
seventy five to eighty five there was some change in
716
00:44:19.079 --> 00:44:22.639
the music, and I really couldn't put my finger on it.
717
00:44:23.719 --> 00:44:29.480
I'm thinking maybe discoll but then disco went by the wayside,
718
00:44:29.519 --> 00:44:32.639
and then I guess you'd call a rock and roll
719
00:44:32.760 --> 00:44:37.039
tried to make it come, you know, maybe comeback. And
720
00:44:37.320 --> 00:44:41.199
it's just funny how just a matter of ten years booth,
721
00:44:41.639 --> 00:44:46.519
you know, it changed so much, you know, especially the
722
00:44:46.679 --> 00:44:50.239
characters you know, like the Hood and Rolling Stones, and
723
00:44:51.440 --> 00:44:54.800
then all these other artists submerged and some went away.
724
00:44:56.119 --> 00:45:01.760
Well, I mean the music is very for maybe lack
725
00:45:01.800 --> 00:45:04.239
of a better term, it's kind of cyclical, but in
726
00:45:04.559 --> 00:45:07.719
it maybe not. It doesn't doesn't always come back. But
727
00:45:09.119 --> 00:45:11.599
I think, like you said, you're you're obviously a little
728
00:45:11.599 --> 00:45:13.360
bit older than me. I'm gonna guess that you're probably
729
00:45:13.400 --> 00:45:18.119
in your mid to late sixties, correct, Okay, so I'm
730
00:45:18.159 --> 00:45:20.440
in my mid to late fifties, so I'm ten years
731
00:45:20.440 --> 00:45:23.719
behind you. So I think the music when you grow
732
00:45:24.239 --> 00:45:27.280
what what you listen to when you're growing up, is
733
00:45:27.320 --> 00:45:31.920
what you there there's a there's a window where you're
734
00:45:32.000 --> 00:45:36.239
influenced by your music. You know, I have kids, and
735
00:45:36.280 --> 00:45:39.079
I have friends that are younger, and I do not
736
00:45:39.280 --> 00:45:44.559
understand their musical tastes. Okay, my parents didn't understand.
737
00:45:44.079 --> 00:45:45.119
My musical tastes.
738
00:45:45.800 --> 00:45:50.679
So you know, it's it's that there's a window and
739
00:45:50.840 --> 00:45:53.360
and and we had an article on it one time
740
00:45:54.119 --> 00:45:58.639
a while back. But your music influences are like between
741
00:45:58.639 --> 00:46:02.400
a certain age, like between thirteen and sixteen and then
742
00:46:02.719 --> 00:46:05.679
and then it kicks in. And that's what you're you know,
743
00:46:05.760 --> 00:46:08.239
I mean, you know, you're you grew up with the
744
00:46:08.239 --> 00:46:10.599
Who and led Zeppelin and the Stones that were that
745
00:46:10.679 --> 00:46:13.079
were at the top of the charts in my wheelhouse.
746
00:46:13.119 --> 00:46:15.599
I mean it was Phil Collins, Daryl Hall and John Oots.
747
00:46:15.599 --> 00:46:18.920
I mean so a little bit. But the you know,
748
00:46:19.039 --> 00:46:22.239
Zeppelin was there in eighty eighty one. You know, the
749
00:46:22.280 --> 00:46:26.519
Stones haven't gone away, you know. So, I mean, you know,
750
00:46:26.599 --> 00:46:30.960
I get where you're coming from. But like today's music,
751
00:46:31.000 --> 00:46:32.840
I mean, hell, there's no way I can listen to
752
00:46:32.920 --> 00:46:33.679
ninety percent of.
753
00:46:33.639 --> 00:46:39.400
It right right I there, And yeah, you explained that
754
00:46:39.679 --> 00:46:44.440
very well. You know that you're right. You know what
755
00:46:44.559 --> 00:46:47.000
we grow up with and what makes us feel good.
756
00:46:47.239 --> 00:46:51.320
You know, you know, cranking up that we'll get fulled again,
757
00:46:51.800 --> 00:46:53.719
you know, shrowing down the highway.
758
00:46:54.119 --> 00:46:54.320
Yeah.
759
00:46:54.360 --> 00:46:56.960
Well, I mean, and you know, if you're if you're
760
00:46:57.000 --> 00:47:00.960
a music person, like I like to consider myself. I
761
00:47:01.000 --> 00:47:03.280
like to consider myself because I can. I can listen
762
00:47:03.320 --> 00:47:06.920
to just about anything. But you know, if you take
763
00:47:07.000 --> 00:47:10.400
me back to you know, the fifties and the sixties,
764
00:47:10.440 --> 00:47:12.239
like I can listen to Bill Haley and the Comments,
765
00:47:12.239 --> 00:47:15.840
I can listen to uh Seacrews, I can.
766
00:47:16.079 --> 00:47:16.559
You know they're there.
767
00:47:16.679 --> 00:47:19.400
There's oldies out there, Elvis, you know that you could
768
00:47:19.400 --> 00:47:21.760
that you can relate to. And you're sitting there and
769
00:47:21.760 --> 00:47:25.119
you're thinking, man, this was great music. The the Animals,
770
00:47:25.639 --> 00:47:30.199
you know, early to midst of course, the Beatles, like
771
00:47:30.280 --> 00:47:33.000
you said, the Stones, Yeah you know. But I mean
772
00:47:33.039 --> 00:47:36.639
I also, I don't think I'm closed minded when it
773
00:47:36.679 --> 00:47:37.320
comes to music.
774
00:47:37.360 --> 00:47:37.519
Now.
775
00:47:37.519 --> 00:47:39.760
There's there's groups that I don't like that are very
776
00:47:39.760 --> 00:47:42.400
popular with other people, Like I'm not. I can't listen
777
00:47:42.440 --> 00:47:44.800
to Pink Floyd and I can't listen to Rush. I
778
00:47:44.880 --> 00:47:48.679
just there they don't for whatever reason, I don't. I
779
00:47:48.679 --> 00:47:49.639
can't relate to them.
780
00:47:50.639 --> 00:47:52.719
I hear that absolutely here.
781
00:47:53.239 --> 00:47:57.920
And and you know, music is music is definitely subjective
782
00:47:58.559 --> 00:48:00.400
because it's what you what you grew up with. But
783
00:48:00.559 --> 00:48:02.599
you if you had older brothers or sisters, or your
784
00:48:02.599 --> 00:48:06.559
best friends or or what. Like one of my best friends,
785
00:48:06.599 --> 00:48:10.079
he loved R e O speedwagons, high in fidelity. I
786
00:48:10.079 --> 00:48:14.559
I just didn't do anything for me. So yeah, yeah,
787
00:48:14.800 --> 00:48:15.519
but love it.
788
00:48:16.599 --> 00:48:20.400
Go ahead, and Jane, you know he was talking about Rush.
789
00:48:20.480 --> 00:48:22.559
I'll just finish up with this. I had a friend
790
00:48:22.559 --> 00:48:26.320
who loved Rush, and that's all he would play. You know,
791
00:48:26.480 --> 00:48:30.079
this is back in the Yeah, I remember when he
792
00:48:30.159 --> 00:48:34.039
was going over to Pogos Pub in Youngstown and finally
793
00:48:34.119 --> 00:48:36.800
my friend reached from the back seat pulled out the.
794
00:48:36.800 --> 00:48:41.400
Tape through nice I can appreciate that.
795
00:48:42.599 --> 00:48:46.480
Oh yeah, it was you know, a big to do
796
00:48:46.960 --> 00:48:50.719
once we stopped, you know, but uh, you know, not
797
00:48:50.880 --> 00:48:53.840
a fight. Just you know, and listen to it.
798
00:48:54.119 --> 00:48:56.400
And to the people that like Rush, that's that's great.
799
00:48:56.760 --> 00:48:59.360
It just doesn't it doesn't do anything for me. You know,
800
00:48:59.840 --> 00:49:03.119
if you like him, then so be it. So but okay,
801
00:49:03.119 --> 00:49:07.519
I appreciate the call. Craig, all right, you too quick
802
00:49:07.519 --> 00:49:09.840
story about a Rush of what he was talking about
803
00:49:09.840 --> 00:49:12.000
and having a friend. I had a friend. I still
804
00:49:12.039 --> 00:49:15.199
have a friend. He's a year older than me and
805
00:49:16.719 --> 00:49:20.039
huge Rush fan, and he this is like when concerts
806
00:49:20.039 --> 00:49:22.280
were coming out on DVD and so on and so forth.
807
00:49:22.320 --> 00:49:25.199
So he approached me and said, hey, I want you
808
00:49:25.239 --> 00:49:29.280
to watch this Rush concert on DVD and I'll watch.
809
00:49:29.480 --> 00:49:31.760
He said, do you have a Springsteen concert on DVD?
810
00:49:32.480 --> 00:49:34.320
And I said, yeah, I got a couple, And I said,
811
00:49:34.400 --> 00:49:36.320
you know, I was trying to find the best one,
812
00:49:36.360 --> 00:49:39.199
so I got the one from Barcelona, not the best one,
813
00:49:39.199 --> 00:49:40.559
but probably the best one in my collection.
814
00:49:41.519 --> 00:49:42.840
So we swapped.
815
00:49:44.039 --> 00:49:48.079
DVDs and I sat there and like the biggest thing
816
00:49:48.159 --> 00:49:52.039
that he excited him was when the guitar player from
817
00:49:52.079 --> 00:49:54.199
Russian I can't think of his name off the top
818
00:49:54.239 --> 00:49:56.280
of my head, but he does like a leg kick,
819
00:49:56.320 --> 00:49:58.920
and I'm like, like, that's your excitement of the show
820
00:49:58.960 --> 00:50:02.920
where you have jumping all over the stage, playing different instruments,
821
00:50:03.400 --> 00:50:06.440
interacting with the crowd, so on and so forth. And
822
00:50:06.480 --> 00:50:08.840
it's just in his response to me, was I forgot
823
00:50:08.880 --> 00:50:12.639
how he said, I didn't realize Bruce Springsteen was that
824
00:50:12.800 --> 00:50:16.760
good of a guitarist. That was his interpretation. My interpretation
825
00:50:16.880 --> 00:50:20.559
on the rest wal the Rush DVD was the musicianship
826
00:50:20.679 --> 00:50:24.079
was great, but the concert itself was very boring. So
827
00:50:24.440 --> 00:50:27.599
that's just again, that's just me. So, hey, you want
828
00:50:27.639 --> 00:50:29.679
to just give a quick shout out on a couple
829
00:50:29.800 --> 00:50:33.760
things that are happening today. Flu shots are available free
830
00:50:33.760 --> 00:50:36.719
of charge in Wheeling. Well Point, West Virginia will host
831
00:50:36.719 --> 00:50:39.679
of vaccine clinic at Wheeley Island. That's the casino on
832
00:50:39.800 --> 00:50:42.519
south Stone Street. Shots will only be given to adults
833
00:50:42.519 --> 00:50:45.679
over the age of eighteen. Anyone that gets a vaccine
834
00:50:45.719 --> 00:50:48.159
will also be gifted a twenty five dollars gift card.
835
00:50:48.599 --> 00:50:51.480
And for our listeners and friends up in Weirton, more
836
00:50:51.480 --> 00:50:54.679
than a thousand residents will be without power today. It's
837
00:50:54.760 --> 00:50:57.760
part of a planned outage Vermond Power. Those in the
838
00:50:57.800 --> 00:51:01.920
Whirton and Marlin Heights area will be impacted. Notifications will
839
00:51:01.960 --> 00:51:04.599
be sent to those affected, and the outage is expected
840
00:51:04.639 --> 00:51:07.559
to last from about eight thirty, so about right now
841
00:51:08.079 --> 00:51:11.159
till two pm. So if you're in Weird and your
842
00:51:11.199 --> 00:51:14.840
power goes out, now you know why. So coming up,
843
00:51:14.880 --> 00:51:18.159
we've got the second half of the bloom Daddy interview
844
00:51:18.719 --> 00:51:22.360
and that'll be coming up. And just wanted to let
845
00:51:22.400 --> 00:51:26.239
a few things. The Pittsburgh Penguins Tonight, they're back on
846
00:51:26.280 --> 00:51:30.000
the ice. They face off against the Panthers from Sunrise
847
00:51:30.079 --> 00:51:33.039
in Florida. Pittsburgh's on a three game winning streak following
848
00:51:33.039 --> 00:51:35.559
a big victory over the Canucks, and don't forget. You
849
00:51:35.559 --> 00:51:39.360
can catch tonight's game in all Penguin games on our
850
00:51:39.400 --> 00:51:43.119
sister station, Eagle one O seven to five. It's the
851
00:51:43.239 --> 00:51:46.119
eight thirty. I'm sorry. Take twenty eight on the bloom
852
00:51:46.159 --> 00:52:14.119
Daddy Experience with Sam and Otis News Radio eleven seventy, WWVA.
853
00:52:03.480 --> 00:52:06.920
News Radio eleven seventy, It's the bloom Daddy Experience. Welcome
854
00:52:06.960 --> 00:52:10.159
back to the Bloomdaddy Show. Continuing my conversation with Bob Woodson,
855
00:52:10.199 --> 00:52:14.199
civil rights icon, community development leader, author, founder president of
856
00:52:14.239 --> 00:52:18.559
the Woodson Center, also launched the seventeen seventy six Units
857
00:52:18.639 --> 00:52:21.480
campaign to counter the sixteen nineteen Project.
858
00:52:21.519 --> 00:52:23.119
Before I get to that, I want to ask you.
859
00:52:23.360 --> 00:52:24.440
I've always talked.
860
00:52:24.280 --> 00:52:26.320
About how the Republican Party needs to do a better
861
00:52:26.440 --> 00:52:29.679
job of reaching out to the black voter, especially the
862
00:52:29.760 --> 00:52:32.639
young black voter. So with that in mind, from a
863
00:52:32.679 --> 00:52:36.960
conservative leaning perspective, Bob, what should Republicans and conservatives be
864
00:52:37.000 --> 00:52:41.039
doing differently to engage with Black American urban communities.
865
00:52:42.039 --> 00:52:42.800
Republicans have.
866
00:52:43.159 --> 00:52:47.440
Bill Bennett years ago said that when Democrats see blacks
867
00:52:47.480 --> 00:52:50.800
and poor people, they see a see of victims and
868
00:52:50.880 --> 00:52:55.360
conservativecy aliens.
869
00:52:55.000 --> 00:52:58.159
That's one way of looking at I mean, I think.
870
00:52:58.000 --> 00:53:01.960
What they got to understand that conservative have proprietary and
871
00:53:01.960 --> 00:53:06.639
strategic interests that are compatible with low income black communities.
872
00:53:07.440 --> 00:53:12.199
Conservatives don't profit from the existence of poverty, and so
873
00:53:12.480 --> 00:53:16.440
they should do. There was a Republican Dick Reardon in
874
00:53:16.559 --> 00:53:20.519
nineteen ninety at Los Angeles. He took some of his
875
00:53:20.639 --> 00:53:24.079
friends into East LA and listened to low income and
876
00:53:24.119 --> 00:53:27.880
built the Reardon Center. And he was the first Republican
877
00:53:28.000 --> 00:53:31.880
to win the mayor's race in thirty five years because
878
00:53:31.920 --> 00:53:35.559
he understood if you plant charitably, you can harvest politically,
879
00:53:35.920 --> 00:53:38.000
but you don't harvest a plant in the same year.
880
00:53:39.800 --> 00:53:42.599
So and he won by sixty percent of all the
881
00:53:42.639 --> 00:53:48.199
demographics because Dick Reardon came in and really included the
882
00:53:48.320 --> 00:53:52.599
people suffering the problem in their own rebirth and redemption.
883
00:53:53.559 --> 00:53:59.639
That's what Republican Steve Goldsmith a few years after in Milwaukee,
884
00:54:00.280 --> 00:54:03.960
I mean Indianapolis, Indiana, did the same thing with the
885
00:54:03.960 --> 00:54:04.920
same results.
886
00:54:05.519 --> 00:54:08.079
I want to ask you. You mentioned culture earlier in
887
00:54:08.119 --> 00:54:12.039
this conversation. The culture conversation, it's often kind of kicked
888
00:54:12.079 --> 00:54:14.760
to the curb and we talk about systemic or structural
889
00:54:14.840 --> 00:54:18.239
change you speak about you spoke about it earlier, family, faith,
890
00:54:18.320 --> 00:54:22.599
personal responsibility, local institutions. In your estimations, how much of
891
00:54:22.639 --> 00:54:27.440
the solution lies in changing culture versus changing let's say policy.
892
00:54:27.679 --> 00:54:30.159
Culture's everything I think it was.
893
00:54:30.159 --> 00:54:36.480
Samuel Adams said that democracy and capitalism are but empty
894
00:54:36.559 --> 00:54:39.239
vessels into which we pour our values as a country,
895
00:54:40.800 --> 00:54:44.199
and that is true with culture. The greatest crisis facing
896
00:54:44.239 --> 00:54:48.400
America today is not racial. It is a moral and
897
00:54:48.440 --> 00:54:53.440
spiritual freefall that is destroying our children. According to Harvard study,
898
00:54:53.480 --> 00:54:56.960
the leading cause of death of Appalachia and whiteses is
899
00:54:57.000 --> 00:55:03.400
prescription drugs homicide. For blacks in Silicon Valley, it is suicide.
900
00:55:03.559 --> 00:55:07.199
The suicide rate among teenagers and Silicon Guy is six
901
00:55:07.280 --> 00:55:12.599
times at national average. But elites keep bombarding our children,
902
00:55:12.719 --> 00:55:16.360
telling them a year after year that they live in
903
00:55:16.400 --> 00:55:19.599
a racist nation, and if you're white, you are an oppressor,
904
00:55:19.639 --> 00:55:20.199
and if you're.
905
00:55:20.079 --> 00:55:21.000
Black, you're a victim.
906
00:55:21.519 --> 00:55:26.079
After a while, these children begin to believe that perhaps
907
00:55:26.880 --> 00:55:31.599
they're unworthy, and so if a person devalues their life,
908
00:55:32.719 --> 00:55:35.119
they would be taking their own or take someone else's.
909
00:55:35.119 --> 00:55:38.360
They're different size of the same coin. And so we
910
00:55:38.480 --> 00:55:42.239
must we must set aside race. We must set aside
911
00:55:42.320 --> 00:55:48.639
our ideological differences and concentrate on the remralization of our
912
00:55:49.400 --> 00:55:50.800
society and our children.
913
00:55:50.960 --> 00:55:53.360
What you just said is very powerful, but it's so true.
914
00:55:53.599 --> 00:55:55.400
I mean, it is so true when you think about it.
915
00:55:55.400 --> 00:55:57.599
And along the same lines, Bob, if you could hand
916
00:55:57.960 --> 00:56:03.000
every young person in a struggling neighborhood one piece of advice,
917
00:56:03.039 --> 00:56:03.639
what would it be.
918
00:56:06.159 --> 00:56:09.519
That you are There are two ways to prevent people
919
00:56:09.559 --> 00:56:11.800
from competing. One is to tell them they don't have
920
00:56:11.840 --> 00:56:16.880
to yep, and the other ones by law. What we
921
00:56:16.960 --> 00:56:19.039
can do is say to every young person that your
922
00:56:19.079 --> 00:56:23.159
destinies is in your own hands, that you can become
923
00:56:23.239 --> 00:56:27.559
agents of your own uplift. But values are caught, they're
924
00:56:27.599 --> 00:56:30.679
not taught. So what we do at the Woodson Center
925
00:56:31.400 --> 00:56:37.440
we recruit people who who have overcome the challenges that
926
00:56:37.519 --> 00:56:39.840
a lot of our young people, and we put them
927
00:56:40.320 --> 00:56:44.000
in proximity to these young people so they can inspire
928
00:56:44.079 --> 00:56:48.880
them to become redeemed. America is a country of second chances.
929
00:56:48.960 --> 00:56:53.360
It is a country of redemption, and we have proven
930
00:56:54.039 --> 00:56:58.679
that children can be rescued from their self doubts if
931
00:56:58.719 --> 00:56:59.880
you expose them to me.
932
00:57:01.519 --> 00:57:04.079
That have moral clarity.
933
00:57:05.519 --> 00:57:08.760
And put them in relationship with them right, they can
934
00:57:08.800 --> 00:57:11.519
guide them to a more fruitful life.
935
00:57:11.599 --> 00:57:14.400
I'm talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil Rights Icon.
936
00:57:15.360 --> 00:57:20.280
Your work with seventeen seventy six Knights, it positions itself
937
00:57:20.480 --> 00:57:23.760
as the opposite of the sixteen nineteen project. Why did
938
00:57:23.840 --> 00:57:28.480
you feel it was so important to start seventeen seventy
939
00:57:28.519 --> 00:57:29.440
six Knights.
940
00:57:29.159 --> 00:57:31.760
Because a friend of mine told me that the current
941
00:57:31.920 --> 00:57:35.079
dialogue that we are facing is being driven by a
942
00:57:35.079 --> 00:57:40.440
group of elite whites, guilty whites who are seeking absolution
943
00:57:41.760 --> 00:57:46.199
from crimes they never committed, and by elite, entitled blacks
944
00:57:46.239 --> 00:57:50.079
who are seeking absolutions i I mean justices they never suffered.
945
00:57:51.559 --> 00:57:53.920
Yeah, that pretty much nails it.
946
00:57:54.599 --> 00:57:59.679
And so what we're trying to do is confront that reality.
947
00:58:00.719 --> 00:58:07.039
And since they were using black journalists to take race
948
00:58:07.880 --> 00:58:11.119
in America's birth defective slavery and use it as a
949
00:58:11.159 --> 00:58:14.599
bludgeon against the country, we felt that the messengers to
950
00:58:14.760 --> 00:58:18.079
counter that must be black. But we didn't want to
951
00:58:18.360 --> 00:58:22.599
engage in any more gladiatorial debate. We wanted to offer
952
00:58:23.000 --> 00:58:29.079
a creative, inspirational narrative. So in our books that sold
953
00:58:29.079 --> 00:58:33.199
out within three weeks. Usually a book of essays don't
954
00:58:33.239 --> 00:58:37.639
sell like that, right, But because we told inspirational stories
955
00:58:38.239 --> 00:58:42.239
about how twenty blacks were born slaves and died millionaires.
956
00:58:43.000 --> 00:58:46.519
And we talked about how the black community in nineteen
957
00:58:46.639 --> 00:58:50.159
thirties to nineteen forty during the depression, had the highest
958
00:58:50.199 --> 00:58:54.559
marriage rate. So we emphasized in our books publication not
959
00:58:54.800 --> 00:58:58.599
how we suffered under the boot of slavery and Jim Crow,
960
00:58:59.119 --> 00:59:02.719
but how we achieved in the face of this opposition.
961
00:59:03.639 --> 00:59:06.440
Last question I have for you looking ahead ten years,
962
00:59:06.480 --> 00:59:11.039
What's one I don't know. Let's just say measurable change
963
00:59:11.840 --> 00:59:15.360
you hope to point to and say we did that.
964
00:59:17.079 --> 00:59:20.599
I we have what we call the violence free zones.
965
00:59:20.960 --> 00:59:25.119
The violence we want to demonstrate that we can go
966
00:59:25.239 --> 00:59:30.679
into a whole neighborhood and transform and redeem it from within.
967
00:59:31.000 --> 00:59:33.039
We have islands of excellence.
968
00:59:33.039 --> 00:59:34.920
I can take you into one of the most violent
969
00:59:35.599 --> 00:59:38.880
areas of Washington, d C. And show you where not
970
00:59:39.000 --> 00:59:42.000
a single act of violence or crime has been committed
971
00:59:42.119 --> 00:59:46.840
in one hundred days through how yeah we can bringing
972
00:59:46.880 --> 00:59:54.000
back bringing back people responsibility, what we call antibodies. That
973
00:59:54.039 --> 00:59:58.760
these grassroots leaders that I serve service antibodies, and the
974
00:59:58.760 --> 01:00:01.239
best way to cure the human is a strength in
975
01:00:01.239 --> 01:00:03.840
its own immune system. So I would like to be
976
01:00:03.920 --> 01:00:07.039
able to have the resources to go into some of
977
01:00:07.039 --> 01:00:10.440
these really troubled neighborhoods and demonstrate it how we can
978
01:00:10.519 --> 01:00:15.840
bring about a reduction and violence, crime and restore civil
979
01:00:16.000 --> 01:00:17.400
order in those communities.
980
01:00:18.199 --> 01:00:21.079
Bob, I'm sure everybody loved listening to you and Lorraine today.
981
01:00:21.079 --> 01:00:23.159
Thanks so much for stopping by my studio. Thank you
982
01:00:23.280 --> 01:00:28.599
been an honor. Bob Woodson, civil rights icon, community development leader, author, founder,
983
01:00:28.639 --> 01:00:31.480
president of the Woodson Center. Much more to come here
984
01:00:31.519 --> 01:00:34.159
on WTAM eleven hundred right after this.
985
01:00:35.480 --> 01:00:40.800
Eight fifty on News Radio eleven seventy Wwva Blundetti experience
986
01:00:40.840 --> 01:00:43.320
with Sam and otis no Sam today. She's a little
987
01:00:43.360 --> 01:00:45.400
under the weather. If you listened to yesterday show, you
988
01:00:45.400 --> 01:00:49.159
would realize that she sent me a text and said,
989
01:00:49.440 --> 01:00:52.440
I am a hundred times worse. I cannot make it
990
01:00:52.480 --> 01:00:56.360
in and she apologized. But we are not alone because
991
01:00:56.360 --> 01:00:59.920
we have the one, the only Kevin Cook from Strawbot
992
01:01:00.119 --> 01:01:08.840
Motive joining us at the moment. Good morning, Kevin, I'm busy.
993
01:01:08.960 --> 01:01:14.519
I have two hats. I'm wearing two hats today. I
994
01:01:14.559 --> 01:01:17.519
do have this for you because you're you're you're in
995
01:01:17.559 --> 01:01:21.039
my age wheelhouse, so to speak. Did you know that
996
01:01:21.159 --> 01:01:25.199
today is National TV talk show host Day and it's
997
01:01:25.239 --> 01:01:28.320
observed annually on Johnny Carson's birthday.
998
01:01:29.159 --> 01:01:30.880
I did not, but I was.
999
01:01:33.840 --> 01:01:34.320
Yeah, he was.
1000
01:01:34.719 --> 01:01:36.800
Oh he was the king of Late Night that he
1001
01:01:37.039 --> 01:01:40.039
he he earned that Moniker. And you know, I was
1002
01:01:40.079 --> 01:01:42.840
in college when David Letterman started to get popular, and
1003
01:01:42.880 --> 01:01:46.719
I can remember my one roommate saying, oh, Johnny Carson sucks.
1004
01:01:46.840 --> 01:01:49.599
David Letterman's where it is now? Blah blah blah. And
1005
01:01:49.760 --> 01:01:52.320
you know, we were in that age group where you know,
1006
01:01:52.480 --> 01:01:57.159
David Dave was appealing to the younger college age kids
1007
01:01:57.159 --> 01:01:59.880
as opposed to John Carson. So I mean I could
1008
01:02:00.000 --> 01:02:01.760
see where people interpreted it that way.
1009
01:02:02.679 --> 01:02:04.199
Yeah, good thing that Carson was.
1010
01:02:04.320 --> 01:02:08.400
Nothing was political, okay, it was just you know, all
1011
01:02:08.440 --> 01:02:11.000
about the gas and he put a lot of effort,
1012
01:02:11.280 --> 01:02:14.960
you know, his knowledge of the Castle Spectact. But he
1013
01:02:15.079 --> 01:02:19.400
was party sharp, smart, is overall very good.
1014
01:02:19.599 --> 01:02:23.599
It was true entertaining absolutely. So you know, Johnny's last
1015
01:02:23.639 --> 01:02:27.800
name was Carson, or we could say cars on sale.
1016
01:02:31.280 --> 01:02:35.639
We're saying, man, wow, yeah, I didn't say it was good.
1017
01:02:35.800 --> 01:02:37.039
I didn't say it was good.
1018
01:02:37.960 --> 01:02:43.320
About I'm headed to Mountain here Honda, as everybody would
1019
01:02:43.320 --> 01:02:45.199
be in you know, one hundred miles in this place
1020
01:02:45.280 --> 01:02:48.280
Auto notes. By now we have you know, Strong Automotive
1021
01:02:48.280 --> 01:02:51.079
Group has number one and number two minor dealers in
1022
01:02:51.119 --> 01:02:54.480
the entire state of Weard. And if we sell more
1023
01:02:54.519 --> 01:02:59.320
Honda than anyone right now, we have the absolutely phenomenal selection.
1024
01:03:00.119 --> 01:03:00.280
Uh.
1025
01:03:00.320 --> 01:03:03.519
If you're much civics, h all do it for the
1026
01:03:03.599 --> 01:03:06.559
number one fairly vehicle in the Ohio Valley.
1027
01:03:06.639 --> 01:03:08.760
It is the c r V. Uh.
1028
01:03:09.320 --> 01:03:12.880
Those things are just a change. I mean we see
1029
01:03:13.000 --> 01:03:18.239
them now very consistently with two hundred thousand plus miles
1030
01:03:18.960 --> 01:03:21.360
and I actually tell me that day that I want
1031
01:03:21.400 --> 01:03:24.000
to trade it. But it doesn't make any sense to
1032
01:03:24.400 --> 01:03:26.440
the thing that simply will not quit.
1033
01:03:27.280 --> 01:03:27.440
Uh.
1034
01:03:28.039 --> 01:03:30.760
I mean it's they're just spectacle with its coil as
1035
01:03:30.800 --> 01:03:35.000
passports bridge lads, they're great incentence on all of them
1036
01:03:35.079 --> 01:03:37.960
right now. Uh. We aredineering at the end of the
1037
01:03:38.079 --> 01:03:40.719
mund and you know everybody noticed this last week, these
1038
01:03:40.800 --> 01:03:43.840
last few days, they had a bunch of sales managers
1039
01:03:43.840 --> 01:03:45.360
that are trying to hit their numbers.
1040
01:03:45.840 --> 01:03:46.000
Uh.
1041
01:03:46.119 --> 01:03:48.960
The manufacturers have put a lot of fracture orders, you know,
1042
01:03:49.159 --> 01:03:52.159
to be dominant in the market. And with the incentives
1043
01:03:52.199 --> 01:03:54.920
out there, do that. Uh, and we put the money
1044
01:03:54.960 --> 01:03:55.880
in the trade.
1045
01:03:55.840 --> 01:03:58.880
And making it happen, you do, I mean it makes
1046
01:03:58.960 --> 01:04:00.840
you guys, do make it happen. And I can attest
1047
01:04:00.880 --> 01:04:01.159
to that.
1048
01:04:01.920 --> 01:04:05.039
Yeah, And that's the fact. We'll Stuart as well, Jerry.
1049
01:04:05.440 --> 01:04:09.119
They carry ever Drives, the only odd dealer in the
1050
01:04:09.280 --> 01:04:12.880
entire state of Westerginia that has lifetime protection. They had
1051
01:04:12.960 --> 01:04:13.599
to ever Drive.
1052
01:04:14.039 --> 01:04:15.360
It covers these vehicles.
1053
01:04:15.800 --> 01:04:18.679
You know, get your transmission drive right and something happens
1054
01:04:18.679 --> 01:04:22.480
if stam, I get a back your quick as possible.
1055
01:04:23.320 --> 01:04:24.880
Again, I know that for a fact.
1056
01:04:25.719 --> 01:04:25.920
Yep.
1057
01:04:26.440 --> 01:04:29.039
All right, Well we'll try to do better with this
1058
01:04:29.159 --> 01:04:30.079
joke today.
1059
01:04:30.159 --> 01:04:32.079
Okay, Wow, well listen, hold on, I want you to
1060
01:04:32.159 --> 01:04:35.599
be on the defensive today. All right, you have to
1061
01:04:35.679 --> 01:04:40.119
be on the defensive just in case, because it's National
1062
01:04:40.239 --> 01:04:42.400
slap you're irritating coworker day.
1063
01:04:45.119 --> 01:04:46.679
I will try to be careful all day.
1064
01:04:47.760 --> 01:04:51.920
You never know where it's gonna come from never irritated.
1065
01:04:52.000 --> 01:04:52.559
And I'm glad.
1066
01:04:52.639 --> 01:04:54.920
I am glad Sam isn't here because I'd probably get
1067
01:04:54.960 --> 01:05:01.000
slapped more than once. All Right, man, we'll talk tomorrow.
1068
01:05:02.360 --> 01:05:04.760
All right, we'll see you. As we said, it is
1069
01:05:04.880 --> 01:05:09.000
National TV Talk Show Host Day, and you know we
1070
01:05:09.079 --> 01:05:11.719
were talking about Johnny Carson, and it is observed annually
1071
01:05:11.840 --> 01:05:14.760
on his birthday. He was the king of late night television,
1072
01:05:14.800 --> 01:05:18.400
hosted NBC's The Tonight Show for thirty years prior to
1073
01:05:18.559 --> 01:05:20.599
his death in two thousand and five at the age
1074
01:05:20.679 --> 01:05:24.239
of seventy nine. It's also National Boston Cream Pie Day.
1075
01:05:24.320 --> 01:05:28.480
It's iPod Day. Some celebrity birthdays today. Weird Al Yankovic.
1076
01:05:30.719 --> 01:05:33.119
I don't know if that's a celebrity or not. Dwight
1077
01:05:33.239 --> 01:05:36.360
yoakum And has been here several times. One of my
1078
01:05:36.440 --> 01:05:43.400
favorites to go see Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool, Oh the body
1079
01:05:43.559 --> 01:05:46.440
what is it? The Bodyguard's Bodyguard or something like that
1080
01:05:46.719 --> 01:05:49.719
with Samuel L. Jackson, Great move, two movies, very good
1081
01:05:49.840 --> 01:05:54.800
and retired Football Star. That's what it says. I didn't
1082
01:05:54.800 --> 01:05:59.800
say that. Doug Flutie is sixty three today. So those
1083
01:05:59.800 --> 01:06:02.039
are couple of the things that are going on Today again,
1084
01:06:03.039 --> 01:06:06.159
Sam and otis on the Blue Daddy Experience. Sam unfortunately
1085
01:06:06.280 --> 01:06:09.400
a little bit under the weather. The Chargers host the
1086
01:06:09.480 --> 01:06:13.679
Vikings tonight to kick off Week eight of the NFL season. Elsewhere,
1087
01:06:13.760 --> 01:06:16.400
the Steelers host Jordan Love and the Packers on Sunday
1088
01:06:16.480 --> 01:06:19.440
Night Football. Pittsburgh is coming off at disappointing loss to
1089
01:06:19.480 --> 01:06:22.360
the Bengals, but still leads the AFC North at four
1090
01:06:22.440 --> 01:06:25.400
and two. Meanwhile, a future Hall of Fame quarterback has
1091
01:06:25.440 --> 01:06:29.199
been thinking about revenge. Steelers gunslinger Aaron Rodgers told the
1092
01:06:29.320 --> 01:06:32.880
media yesterday he has no animosity towards the Packers and
1093
01:06:33.000 --> 01:06:35.000
this is the first time the forty one year old
1094
01:06:35.360 --> 01:06:39.440
will play his former team. And don't forget Penguins tonight
1095
01:06:39.519 --> 01:06:42.360
on the ice from Florida taking on the Panthers. They're
1096
01:06:42.400 --> 01:06:45.159
on a three game winning streak. If you can't catch
1097
01:06:45.159 --> 01:06:47.440
it on the two, it is on our sister station
1098
01:06:47.639 --> 01:06:50.400
Eagle one oh seven to five Tonight's game and of
1099
01:06:50.480 --> 01:06:54.519
course all Penguins games. Tomorrow nights starts the World Series.
1100
01:06:54.599 --> 01:06:58.000
The Fall Classic is almost here. The defending champs Dodgers
1101
01:06:58.039 --> 01:07:01.679
battle the Blue Jays in Game one Toronto, La, going
1102
01:07:01.800 --> 01:07:04.519
for their third title in six years after dominating the
1103
01:07:04.559 --> 01:07:07.239
Brewers in a sweep of the NLCS to advance. On
1104
01:07:07.360 --> 01:07:10.199
the other side, Toronto is playing for its first World
1105
01:07:10.280 --> 01:07:13.039
Series in more than three decades after it celebrated back
1106
01:07:13.079 --> 01:07:17.000
to back championships in ninety two and ninety three. The
1107
01:07:17.119 --> 01:07:19.880
Jays fought back from a three to two ALCS deficit
1108
01:07:20.559 --> 01:07:24.000
to sink the Mariners and secure the American League pennant
1109
01:07:24.440 --> 01:07:27.960
former pirate Blake Snell taking the mound for the Dodgers,
1110
01:07:28.840 --> 01:07:33.760
and actually two former pirates scheduled to take the mound
1111
01:07:33.880 --> 01:07:37.679
for the Dodgers during the series. Blake Snell in Game one,
1112
01:07:38.280 --> 01:07:42.440
Tyler Glass now I believe in Game three so, and
1113
01:07:42.519 --> 01:07:46.679
then Snell will be back in five and Glass now
1114
01:07:46.760 --> 01:07:51.159
in seven, I believe. Is how it's set up. It's funny,
1115
01:07:51.199 --> 01:07:54.559
you know, we talk about certain things. And if you're
1116
01:07:54.599 --> 01:07:58.159
familiar with Tom Holland, he's the guy that's playing Spider
1117
01:07:58.199 --> 01:08:01.079
Man in the Marvel universe right now. Well, his contract
1118
01:08:01.159 --> 01:08:07.559
with Marvel reportedly prevents him from pursuing the role as
1119
01:08:07.800 --> 01:08:10.639
James Bond, and that's according to the Sun. The agreement
1120
01:08:10.760 --> 01:08:13.800
blocks Holland from taking any other parts that will overshadow
1121
01:08:14.119 --> 01:08:18.840
that one meaning you know either one, effectively ruling out
1122
01:08:18.880 --> 01:08:22.239
the Double seven franchise. A source told the publication Tom
1123
01:08:22.319 --> 01:08:26.560
can't play two superheroes. It just won't happen. Holland previously
1124
01:08:26.680 --> 01:08:29.720
called Bond the pinnacle of working in our industry, but
1125
01:08:29.880 --> 01:08:34.039
joins actors like Tarren Edgerton and Glenn Powell who have
1126
01:08:34.159 --> 01:08:37.960
stepped back from consideration. The search continues for Daniel Craig's
1127
01:08:37.960 --> 01:08:41.359
replacement following twenty twenty one's No Time to Die, and
1128
01:08:41.600 --> 01:08:44.479
Amazon seeks it. Because Amazon owns the franchise now, they
1129
01:08:44.520 --> 01:08:47.039
seek a fresh face actor in his late twenties or
1130
01:08:47.079 --> 01:08:51.239
early thirties. Scott Rose Marsha, relatively unknown actor, reportedly screen
1131
01:08:51.359 --> 01:08:54.680
tested in June using scenes from GoldenEye and was told
1132
01:08:55.199 --> 01:08:59.239
don't impersonate a previous Bond. So there you have it.
1133
01:08:59.319 --> 01:09:00.239
Tom Holland out.
1134
01:09:00.760 --> 01:09:02.399
Although I don't I don't know how Tom.
1135
01:09:02.319 --> 01:09:05.319
Holland could be James Bond. I he's not really British,
1136
01:09:05.960 --> 01:09:06.079
is he?
1137
01:09:06.279 --> 01:09:06.600
I don't know.
1138
01:09:07.600 --> 01:09:10.720
I guess that's something I have to look up anyway.
1139
01:09:10.880 --> 01:09:14.359
Thanks for joining us age fifty eight. Hopefully Sam will
1140
01:09:14.399 --> 01:09:16.880
be back tomorrow, but if not, The Blue Daddy experience
1141
01:09:16.920 --> 01:09:19.239
with Sam and notice will go on and we will
1142
01:09:19.319 --> 01:09:20.000
see you tomorrow.
1
00:00:01.280 --> 00:00:04.599
D number one TUK show in the Ohio Valley. This
2
00:00:04.960 --> 00:00:09.039
is the bloom Daddy Experience. Your host, bloom Daddy. His
3
00:00:09.359 --> 00:00:14.400
goal inform, entertain, and tick people off. The bloom Daddy
4
00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:17.000
Experience on news Radio eleven seventy.
5
00:00:17.280 --> 00:00:20.480
WWVA starts now.
6
00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.039
The Bloomdaddy Experience. It's seven oh six on news Radio
7
00:00:24.280 --> 00:00:27.440
eleven seventy. I want to invite somebody very special to
8
00:00:27.480 --> 00:00:29.800
the show right now. His name is Bob Woodson, civil
9
00:00:29.879 --> 00:00:33.719
rights leader, community development leader, author, founder and president of
10
00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:37.280
the Woodston Center. That's a nonprofit research and demonstration organization
11
00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:42.079
that supports neighborhood based initiatives to revitalize low income communities.
12
00:00:42.280 --> 00:00:46.600
He also launched the Center's seventeen seventy six Units campaign.
13
00:00:46.920 --> 00:00:49.399
He was in Lorraine earlier today giving a speech to
14
00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:52.799
lawmakers other individuals, and he's kind of enough to stop
15
00:00:52.840 --> 00:00:54.039
by the studio here today.
16
00:00:54.039 --> 00:00:56.399
Bob, thanks so much for coming in. Pleased to be here.
17
00:00:56.840 --> 00:00:57.439
I want to start.
18
00:00:57.479 --> 00:00:59.280
I mean, there's so many things to hit on here,
19
00:00:59.320 --> 00:01:05.799
but neighborhood empowerment has been huge for you, and solutions
20
00:01:05.879 --> 00:01:08.640
driven by the people within the community rather than top
21
00:01:08.680 --> 00:01:13.640
down government programs. How did your upbringing, how did your
22
00:01:13.799 --> 00:01:17.480
military service in the Air Force shape your philosophy?
23
00:01:18.359 --> 00:01:22.920
Well, thanks for asking, I think. I was born in
24
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:31.120
nineteen thirty seven in Philadelphia, blue collar neighborhood. I was
25
00:01:31.159 --> 00:01:34.959
the youngest of five children, and my dad fought in
26
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.359
the First World War. He was a Harlem Hellcats, but
27
00:01:40.439 --> 00:01:45.439
he was wounded there and suffered some illnesses that later
28
00:01:45.519 --> 00:01:48.280
took his life when I was nine years old. So
29
00:01:48.439 --> 00:01:52.239
I was left with my mother with a fifth grade education,
30
00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:56.480
the youngest of five children to raise. But the neighborhood
31
00:01:56.519 --> 00:01:59.840
was stable. As I tell people, in those days, you
32
00:02:00.200 --> 00:02:04.079
elderly people could walk freely without being fear of being
33
00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:08.960
assaulted by their grandchildren, never heard guns fired, and ninety
34
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:12.039
eight percent of the households had a man and women
35
00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:16.120
raising children. But there are all kinds of other support structures,
36
00:02:16.360 --> 00:02:22.599
the Elks and other self help organizations. But it also
37
00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:27.120
meant that I had to rely on my peers more
38
00:02:27.159 --> 00:02:32.599
than my blood family. And so I guess, and there
39
00:02:32.599 --> 00:02:35.960
were five of us. One of them, some of your
40
00:02:36.120 --> 00:02:39.400
listeners will know, was Matt Robinson. He was Gordon on
41
00:02:39.439 --> 00:02:43.719
Sesame Street, okay, the first black guy on Sesame Street.
42
00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:47.319
His daughter is Holly Robinson, the actress who's married to
43
00:02:47.439 --> 00:02:51.439
Rodney Peake. I had a chance to eulogize him about
44
00:02:51.479 --> 00:02:53.240
fifteen years ago in Hollywood.
45
00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:56.240
But so I guess I.
46
00:02:56.240 --> 00:03:01.319
Gained us understood why kids joined gangs or have organizations
47
00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:05.199
outside of the family, But we were all responsible.
48
00:03:05.240 --> 00:03:06.280
They were a year older.
49
00:03:06.039 --> 00:03:10.000
Than me, and when they graduated, I was left unaffiliated.
50
00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:12.319
So I dropped out of high school and went into
51
00:03:12.360 --> 00:03:15.840
the military. Didn't have much interest in education, but I
52
00:03:15.879 --> 00:03:17.680
was always good in math, so I had straight a's
53
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:22.400
because they have to study. And the Air Force, the
54
00:03:22.439 --> 00:03:25.599
first time I had left the Tri state area and
55
00:03:26.599 --> 00:03:31.479
went and really got my eye open, taught me discipline.
56
00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:36.960
I heard white people with Southern accents for the first time, interesting,
57
00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:41.840
and so it just exposed me to a whole new world.
58
00:03:41.840 --> 00:03:44.680
I was in the station in New York and then Mississippi,
59
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:46.759
so I had a chance to see racism in the raw,
60
00:03:47.800 --> 00:03:51.280
but it didn't freak me out because I was used
61
00:03:51.319 --> 00:03:54.240
to going around with my own folks anyway, and so
62
00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:57.840
we just found our way. And so I finished high
63
00:03:57.879 --> 00:04:01.400
school in the military, and they trained me and went
64
00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:07.000
to the space program and flew the first Earth satellite attempt,
65
00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:12.520
and so I just kind of gat it matured. It
66
00:04:12.639 --> 00:04:17.680
really matured me. Plus it really integrated people with different
67
00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:18.279
walks of life.
68
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:21.839
You founded the Woodston Center, launched the seventeen seventy six
69
00:04:22.040 --> 00:04:25.879
Nights Initiative. Did you have an aha moment when you
70
00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:33.199
decided to focus on entrepreneurship and self help rather than, hey,
71
00:04:33.399 --> 00:04:36.519
let's rely on government welfare policy reforms.
72
00:04:36.680 --> 00:04:37.839
Yeah, well I just came out.
73
00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:43.040
I was a young civil rights activist after I finished
74
00:04:43.160 --> 00:04:48.079
graduate school, and I was leading civil rights demonstrations in
75
00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:52.600
Barred Rustern's hometown of Westchester, Pennsylvania. I met doctor King
76
00:04:52.680 --> 00:04:56.160
through him. But something happened to me. First of all,
77
00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:59.199
I parted company with the movement on the issue of
78
00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:03.240
force bussing for integration. I was against integration, well, at
79
00:05:03.279 --> 00:05:07.639
least as the opposite of segregation. Me was desegregation, not integration,
80
00:05:08.680 --> 00:05:11.519
So that put me at odds with the leadership. The
81
00:05:11.560 --> 00:05:14.920
second thing that turned me off was we led demonstrations
82
00:05:14.920 --> 00:05:18.879
outside of a pharmaceutical company, and when they desegregated, they
83
00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:23.079
hired nine black PhD chemists. Then I realized that class
84
00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:30.839
was interfering with race. And so when they and so
85
00:05:29.959 --> 00:05:33.199
I sensed right then that a bait and switch game
86
00:05:33.319 --> 00:05:36.959
was going on. Then a lot of the civil rights
87
00:05:37.079 --> 00:05:41.040
leaders became elected officials, and then I saw the sixties
88
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:45.319
poverty programs. I knew from the beginning that it was
89
00:05:45.360 --> 00:05:50.279
going to be worse for poor blacks than anything that
90
00:05:50.360 --> 00:05:53.839
I witnessed experience under segregation, and I was proven to
91
00:05:53.879 --> 00:05:54.319
be true.
92
00:05:55.759 --> 00:05:58.360
Talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil rights leader, community
93
00:05:58.399 --> 00:06:03.879
development lead, author, founder, resident of the Woodson Center, when well,
94
00:06:04.120 --> 00:06:08.240
in your view, what are the biggest misconceptions people, especially
95
00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:11.439
outside the inner city context, have about how change actually
96
00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:13.160
happens in low income neighborhoods.
97
00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:14.040
Well, first of.
98
00:06:14.040 --> 00:06:18.439
All, the biggest myth is that with the deterioration that
99
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:21.759
occurred in the black community, somehow that's the legacy of
100
00:06:21.800 --> 00:06:26.079
slavery and Jim Crow. That is just not true, and
101
00:06:26.120 --> 00:06:29.560
there's evidence to support there that a lot of the
102
00:06:29.639 --> 00:06:33.839
decline that you're talking in the black family occurred as
103
00:06:33.879 --> 00:06:39.240
a consequence of the sixties, where welfare was not only encouraged,
104
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:45.879
but it was demanded and people were recruited into the
105
00:06:45.920 --> 00:06:52.199
welfare system, and the socialists Cloud and Pivot at Columbia
106
00:06:52.360 --> 00:06:56.439
University had this paper that says the best way to
107
00:06:56.480 --> 00:07:01.360
fight poverty is redistributed income. That's socialism. But we're going
108
00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:05.720
to use a black community as a battering ram. And
109
00:07:05.800 --> 00:07:07.600
so there was used to be a stigma of black
110
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:10.399
commune being a welfare but they changed that, and then
111
00:07:10.480 --> 00:07:13.920
the government started to recruit blacks, and so more blacks
112
00:07:14.720 --> 00:07:17.759
flooded into the welfare system in four years in the
113
00:07:17.800 --> 00:07:21.480
early seventies at a time when the unemployment rate for
114
00:07:21.560 --> 00:07:25.920
blacks was four percent, and so what they predicted was true.
115
00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:32.160
There was you separate work from income and school dropout
116
00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:34.680
rights out of wedlock births.
117
00:07:35.680 --> 00:07:36.399
All of that.
118
00:07:38.079 --> 00:07:42.439
Occurred as a consequence of federal policies that separated work
119
00:07:42.439 --> 00:07:46.360
from income. And then the civil rights leaders became elected
120
00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:49.920
officials in these cities and they were administering the twenty
121
00:07:49.959 --> 00:07:54.720
two trillion dollars in where seventy percent of the money
122
00:07:54.759 --> 00:07:57.680
goes to the paper who served the poor. So we
123
00:07:57.759 --> 00:08:01.560
created a commodity out of poor po and the civil
124
00:08:01.680 --> 00:08:04.639
rights people didn't raise any.
125
00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:09.680
How is what you just said received within the black.
126
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:13.959
Community among low income people, It is well received. There's
127
00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:18.279
this myth that somehow the elite leadership speaks for all
128
00:08:18.360 --> 00:08:23.240
Black America on issues of choice and education. Only eight
129
00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:26.800
percent of the leadership supports it. Sixty percent of low
130
00:08:26.839 --> 00:08:31.120
income black supported the leadership supports defund the police. Eighty
131
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:34.399
percent of low income blacks do not support defund the police.
132
00:08:35.879 --> 00:08:38.960
Sixty percent of blacks don't believe that racism is their
133
00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:44.559
biggest barrier to flourishing. The leadership doesn't belive it. So
134
00:08:44.600 --> 00:08:49.240
there's a huge gap in the black community. But you
135
00:08:49.279 --> 00:08:52.600
don't know that because low income blacks don't have a voice.
136
00:08:53.799 --> 00:08:56.960
I'm going to continue this conversation. I've got to take
137
00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:58.639
a break. More of the interview coming up here on
138
00:08:58.679 --> 00:09:00.320
eleven seventy WWA.
139
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:08.200
Seven twenty one on the Blue Daddy Experience with Sam
140
00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:13.679
and Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA. Sam is a
141
00:09:13.799 --> 00:09:16.559
little under the weather. So if you thought yesterday was bad,
142
00:09:16.759 --> 00:09:19.080
she sent me a text at about twelve thirty this morning.
143
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:21.120
Of course I didn't get it until I got out
144
00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:23.720
of bed this morning that said that she was one
145
00:09:23.799 --> 00:09:29.879
hundred times worse than she was yesterday. So she's at
146
00:09:29.879 --> 00:09:31.480
home getting better.
147
00:09:31.559 --> 00:09:32.679
I guess is what we'll say.
148
00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:36.000
We're gonna take a look at some local news. There
149
00:09:36.039 --> 00:09:38.879
has been some sentencing that is being ordered for a
150
00:09:38.919 --> 00:09:43.480
Pittsburgh Ban convicted in a Wheeling cold case sexual assault.
151
00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.879
Prosecutors say a twenty three year old woman was attacked
152
00:09:46.919 --> 00:09:49.600
in two thousand and eight, with little progress made in
153
00:09:49.639 --> 00:09:53.519
the investigation until twenty twenty. That was when DNA evidence
154
00:09:53.559 --> 00:09:55.759
from the crime matched with the man convicted in a
155
00:09:55.799 --> 00:10:00.559
twenty thirteen sexual assault. Joseph Jones was subsequently convicted in
156
00:10:00.600 --> 00:10:02.919
connection with the two thousand and eight crime and has
157
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:05.919
now been sentenced to serve thirteen to thirty five years
158
00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:08.559
in prison. For those of our friends that are up
159
00:10:08.600 --> 00:10:11.360
in the Weirton area, more than one thousand Whirton residents
160
00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.919
will be without power today. It's part of a planned
161
00:10:13.960 --> 00:10:17.120
outage from Lawn Power. Those in the Wharton and Marlin
162
00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:21.240
Heights area will be impacted. Notifications will be sent to
163
00:10:21.279 --> 00:10:24.159
those affected, and the outage is expected to last from
164
00:10:24.200 --> 00:10:28.320
eight thirty this morning until two pm. Also today, flu
165
00:10:28.440 --> 00:10:31.720
shots are available free of charge and Wheeling Well pointed
166
00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:34.679
West Virginia will host a vaccine clinic at Wheeling Island
167
00:10:34.799 --> 00:10:37.919
on south Stone Street. That's the casino, the hotel, the racetrack,
168
00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:38.279
so on.
169
00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:38.759
And so forth.
170
00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:41.440
Shots will only be given to adults over the age
171
00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:44.480
of eighteen and Anyone that gets a vaccine will also
172
00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:48.600
be gifted a twenty five dollars gift card. In Brook County,
173
00:10:48.600 --> 00:10:51.639
the commission is looking for a new commissioner. This comes
174
00:10:51.639 --> 00:10:54.600
as AJ Thomas has announced his plans to resign next year.
175
00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:57.840
Officials say there are certain requirements for those interested in
176
00:10:57.879 --> 00:11:02.080
the position. Interviews are expected to begin in January.
177
00:11:02.559 --> 00:11:02.840
And then.
178
00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:05.240
This is kind of a fun one out of New Martinsville.
179
00:11:05.639 --> 00:11:09.200
The New Martinsville Police Department is hosting its second annual
180
00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:13.919
Hide and Seek from the Police event this Saturday. Participants
181
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:17.159
hide on foot while officers search for them in cruisers
182
00:11:17.240 --> 00:11:20.639
over a two hour period. Registration costs ten bucks and
183
00:11:20.679 --> 00:11:24.039
it's limited to two hundred participants. The event raises money
184
00:11:24.039 --> 00:11:27.080
for the department Shop with a Cop Christmas program, which
185
00:11:27.120 --> 00:11:30.759
provides underprivileged children with two hundred and fifty dollars each
186
00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:34.240
for holiday shopping. So sounds like a pretty fun event
187
00:11:34.600 --> 00:11:38.200
and for a super great cause. At ten dollars a piece,
188
00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:41.879
two hundred participants, that's going to raise some pretty good
189
00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:43.960
money and it sounds like a lot of fun. So
190
00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:46.960
if you're in the New Martinsville area and you want
191
00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:50.159
to be chased by the cops. I guess legally and
192
00:11:50.200 --> 00:11:52.519
pay to have it done. Yeah, there you go. I
193
00:11:52.519 --> 00:11:54.080
don't know if you win at prize or anything. If
194
00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:56.600
you stay away from them, it doesn't say it's kind
195
00:11:56.639 --> 00:11:58.639
of interesting. I'm sure you can look it up or
196
00:11:58.639 --> 00:12:01.720
give them a call. Some other news that's out there.
197
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:03.519
And I know a lot of people from this area
198
00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:06.600
travel to the Myrtle Beach area, you know, whether it
199
00:12:06.679 --> 00:12:10.000
be maybe a little bit farther north like Holden Beach,
200
00:12:10.159 --> 00:12:16.120
Nag's Head, Sunset Beaches in North Carolina. But North Carolina
201
00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:19.159
residents are being reminded that there's a new law which
202
00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:23.960
bans balloon releases. North Carolina Senate Bill twenty went into
203
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:27.879
effect on October first, which bans the organization of or
204
00:12:27.919 --> 00:12:33.240
participation in balloon releases. Violators or violations are punishable by
205
00:12:33.279 --> 00:12:35.960
two hundred and fifty dollars fines, and then the goal
206
00:12:36.039 --> 00:12:39.399
is to cut down on litter, as balloons are believed
207
00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:42.639
to be one of the deadliest types of debris from
208
00:12:42.720 --> 00:12:47.320
marine wildlife. And if you are an Amazon person and
209
00:12:47.360 --> 00:12:50.840
you had the Amazon Web services, there was an outage
210
00:12:50.840 --> 00:12:55.799
on Monday, well, it disrupted eight sleep Smart mattresses, causing
211
00:12:55.879 --> 00:13:00.240
beds to overheat and then trap users in the upright position.
212
00:13:00.840 --> 00:13:04.080
The AWS failure affected he controls on the smart beds,
213
00:13:04.159 --> 00:13:08.759
leaving customers unable to cool down overheating the mattresses. Some
214
00:13:08.879 --> 00:13:12.080
owners of the five thousand dollars Pod five Ultra adjustable
215
00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:15.720
beds found themselves stuck with the mattresses locked in incline
216
00:13:15.720 --> 00:13:19.960
positions designed to reduce snoring and back problems. Eight Sleep
217
00:13:20.039 --> 00:13:27.240
CEO Mateo French Franceschetti apologized on social media, writing, the
218
00:13:27.320 --> 00:13:31.039
AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night,
219
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:34.279
disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want
220
00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:36.759
to provide and I want to apologize for it. The
221
00:13:36.799 --> 00:13:41.759
company restored full functionality to all mattresses by ten pm Monday.
222
00:13:41.879 --> 00:13:44.120
That was ten pm Monday, and they're working on an
223
00:13:44.120 --> 00:13:49.080
outage proofing on their technology. So if you have a
224
00:13:49.320 --> 00:13:54.360
one of those fancy beds five thousand bucks man, that's
225
00:13:54.399 --> 00:13:58.039
a I don't know if that's I haven't bought a
226
00:13:58.039 --> 00:14:00.240
bed for a long time, so I don't know if
227
00:14:00.279 --> 00:14:02.960
that's expensive or not. And the last time I bought
228
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:05.559
a bed, I think I bought it on sales. That
229
00:14:05.600 --> 00:14:10.320
would have been shoot going on maybe nine or ten
230
00:14:10.399 --> 00:14:13.279
years ago, so I mean, I wouldn't be able to
231
00:14:13.279 --> 00:14:17.320
tell you what a bed costs today. There's a great
232
00:14:17.320 --> 00:14:21.000
story out of Santa Cruz, California. There's a mischievous sea
233
00:14:21.039 --> 00:14:25.879
otter and it's causing more trouble for surfers. In Santa Cruz, California.
234
00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:28.840
Last week, there was an otter that reportedly bit a
235
00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:33.159
surfer's foot before taking over her surfboard. The harbor patrol
236
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:35.879
officers found the otter still perched on the board about
237
00:14:35.879 --> 00:14:38.840
twenty minutes later. The surfer was brought to shore safely
238
00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:42.399
and lifeguards later retrieved the board. Officials say that her
239
00:14:42.440 --> 00:14:44.840
skin wasn't punctured, so it was just like a little
240
00:14:44.919 --> 00:14:47.720
nip I would guess. The incident is reminiscent of a
241
00:14:47.759 --> 00:14:52.039
twenty twenty three where they had another otter that has
242
00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:56.639
been tagged it's Arter eight forty one, and that otter
243
00:14:56.840 --> 00:15:00.679
was known for stealing surfboards in the same area. Authorities
244
00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:04.639
have not confirmed if this is the same animal or not,
245
00:15:05.360 --> 00:15:09.120
And of course there's always we have Florida man stories,
246
00:15:09.919 --> 00:15:13.799
and police in Florida say a man stole a fire
247
00:15:13.879 --> 00:15:17.919
engine while crews were inside Tampa Saint Joseph's Hospital on
248
00:15:17.960 --> 00:15:22.279
Tuesday morning. The suspect was identified as fifty nine year
249
00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:27.159
old Warren Scudder. Well after he stole the fire engine,
250
00:15:27.159 --> 00:15:30.440
he crashed it into an suv before officers caught up
251
00:15:30.480 --> 00:15:33.799
with him and blocked the engine's path. The driver of
252
00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:36.600
the suv was treated for hip pain at the hospital,
253
00:15:37.080 --> 00:15:40.639
and Scudder was arrested and charged with grand theft, auto
254
00:15:41.159 --> 00:15:44.600
and hit and run. So not a good day for
255
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:49.360
Warren Scudder. You know again, Sam is off. It's the
256
00:15:49.360 --> 00:15:54.159
bloom Daddy Experience seven twenty eight on news Radio eleven seventy.
257
00:15:54.559 --> 00:15:58.000
Sam's off today, trying to heal up and get better.
258
00:15:58.440 --> 00:16:03.200
So you know, there you have it. With Halloween coming up,
259
00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:08.000
Mars Inc. Has announced news for next year. The Snickers
260
00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:11.679
Crunchy Peanut Butter ice cream bar is set to arrive
261
00:16:11.720 --> 00:16:14.919
in twenty twenty six. The frozen treat features peanut butter
262
00:16:14.960 --> 00:16:20.360
ice cream layered with caramel and crunchy peanuts. Interesting that
263
00:16:20.440 --> 00:16:24.440
sounds kind of good. Actually, extra peanuts are also mixed
264
00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:27.440
into the chocolate coating for added texture. The company said
265
00:16:27.480 --> 00:16:30.600
Snickers and TwixT ice cream bars are currently the top
266
00:16:30.679 --> 00:16:34.840
selling frozen novelties in convenience stores. So there you have it.
267
00:16:35.720 --> 00:16:38.080
Second part of the bloom Daddy Interview is coming up
268
00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:42.320
right after the news and we'll be back. It's the
269
00:16:42.320 --> 00:16:45.879
bloom Daddy Experience with Sam and Otis News Radio eleven seventy.
270
00:16:46.399 --> 00:16:56.600
WWVA News Radio eleven seventy.
271
00:16:56.799 --> 00:16:59.320
It's the bloom Daddy Experience. Welcome back to the bloom
272
00:16:59.360 --> 00:17:03.000
Daddy Show. Cotinuing my conversation with Bob Woodson, civil rights icon,
273
00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:07.000
community development leader, author, founder president of the Woodson Center,
274
00:17:07.079 --> 00:17:11.319
also launched the seventeen seventy six Units campaign to count
275
00:17:11.400 --> 00:17:13.279
the sixteen nineteen Project.
276
00:17:13.359 --> 00:17:14.960
Before I get to that, I want to ask you.
277
00:17:15.200 --> 00:17:16.279
I've always talked.
278
00:17:16.079 --> 00:17:18.160
About how the Republican Party needs to do a better
279
00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:21.480
job of reaching out to the black voter, especially the
280
00:17:21.559 --> 00:17:24.480
young black voter. So with that in mind, from a
281
00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:28.720
conservative leaning perspective, Bob, what should Republicans and conservatives be
282
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:32.880
doing differently to engage with black American urban communities.
283
00:17:33.880 --> 00:17:38.480
Republicans have Bill Bennett years ago said that when Democrats
284
00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:41.160
see blacks and poor people, they see a see of
285
00:17:41.240 --> 00:17:47.160
victims and conservativecy aliens.
286
00:17:46.799 --> 00:17:48.480
That's one way of looking at.
287
00:17:48.440 --> 00:17:51.119
I mean, I think what they got to understand that
288
00:17:51.319 --> 00:17:56.079
conservatives have proprietary and strategic interests that are compatible with
289
00:17:57.119 --> 00:18:01.480
low income black communities. Conservatives his own profit from the
290
00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:06.079
existence of poverty, and so they should do. There was
291
00:18:06.119 --> 00:18:10.279
a Republican of Dick Reardon in nineteen ninety at Los Angeles.
292
00:18:11.559 --> 00:18:14.519
He took some of his friends into East LA and
293
00:18:14.880 --> 00:18:18.440
listened to low income and built the Reardon Center. And
294
00:18:18.519 --> 00:18:22.359
he was the first Republican to win the mayor's race
295
00:18:22.400 --> 00:18:26.160
in thirty five years because he understood if you plant charitably,
296
00:18:26.279 --> 00:18:29.440
you can harvest politically, but you don't harvest a plant
297
00:18:29.440 --> 00:18:33.359
in the same year. So he and he won by
298
00:18:33.440 --> 00:18:37.440
sixty percent of all the demographics because Dick Reardon came
299
00:18:37.480 --> 00:18:42.759
in and really included the people suffering the problem in
300
00:18:42.839 --> 00:18:47.799
their own rebirth and redemption. That's what Republican Steve Goldsmith
301
00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:55.279
a few years after in Milwaukee, I mean Indianapolis, Indiana
302
00:18:55.359 --> 00:18:57.319
did the same thing with the same results.
303
00:18:57.880 --> 00:19:00.440
I want to ask you you mentioned culture earlier in
304
00:19:00.480 --> 00:19:04.200
this conversation. The culture conversation, it's it's often kind of
305
00:19:04.240 --> 00:19:06.559
kicked to the curb and we talk about systemic or
306
00:19:06.599 --> 00:19:07.799
structural change.
307
00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:10.039
You speak about you spoke about it earlier.
308
00:19:10.079 --> 00:19:14.680
Family, faith, personal responsibility local institutions. In your estimations, how
309
00:19:14.759 --> 00:19:18.559
much of the solution lies in changing culture versus changing
310
00:19:18.920 --> 00:19:19.960
let's say policy.
311
00:19:20.200 --> 00:19:22.680
Culture's everything I think it was.
312
00:19:22.720 --> 00:19:29.079
Samuel Adams said that democracy and capitalism are but empty
313
00:19:29.160 --> 00:19:31.880
vessels into which we pour our values as a country,
314
00:19:33.480 --> 00:19:36.880
and that is true with culture. The greatest crisis facing
315
00:19:36.880 --> 00:19:41.119
America today is not racial. It is a moral and
316
00:19:41.160 --> 00:19:46.240
spiritual freefall that is destroying our children. According to Harvard study,
317
00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:50.359
the leading cause of death of Appalachian whites is prescription
318
00:19:50.519 --> 00:19:56.279
drugs homicide. For blacks and Silicon Valley it is suicide.
319
00:19:56.400 --> 00:20:02.640
The suicide rate among teenagers and Silicon times at national average.
320
00:20:02.359 --> 00:20:07.559
But elites keep bombarding our children, telling them a year
321
00:20:07.599 --> 00:20:10.440
after year that they live in a racist nation, and
322
00:20:10.480 --> 00:20:13.119
if you're white, you are an oppressor, and if you're.
323
00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:13.920
Black, you're a victim.
324
00:20:14.440 --> 00:20:19.000
After a while, these children begin to believe that perhaps
325
00:20:19.799 --> 00:20:24.480
they're unworthy, and so if a person devalues their life,
326
00:20:25.599 --> 00:20:28.039
they would be taking their own or take someone else's.
327
00:20:28.039 --> 00:20:31.279
They're different size of the same coin. And so we
328
00:20:31.400 --> 00:20:35.200
must we must set aside race. We must set aside
329
00:20:35.240 --> 00:20:41.559
our ideological differences and concentrate on the remralization of our
330
00:20:42.319 --> 00:20:43.720
society and our children.
331
00:20:43.880 --> 00:20:46.279
What you just said is very powerful, but it's so true.
332
00:20:46.519 --> 00:20:48.319
I mean, it is so true when you think about it.
333
00:20:48.319 --> 00:20:50.480
And along the same lines, Bob, if you could hand
334
00:20:50.880 --> 00:20:55.920
every young person in a struggling neighborhood one piece of advice,
335
00:20:55.960 --> 00:20:56.559
what would it be.
336
00:20:59.079 --> 00:21:02.440
That you are There are two ways to prevent people
337
00:21:02.480 --> 00:21:04.720
from competing. One is to tell them they don't have
338
00:21:04.759 --> 00:21:09.799
to ye and the other ones by law. What we
339
00:21:09.880 --> 00:21:11.960
can do is say to every young person that your
340
00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:16.079
destinies is in your own hands, that you can become
341
00:21:16.160 --> 00:21:20.480
agents of your own uplift. But values are caught, they're
342
00:21:20.519 --> 00:21:23.599
not taught. So what we do at the Woodson Center
343
00:21:24.319 --> 00:21:30.519
we recruit people who have overcome the challenges that a
344
00:21:30.559 --> 00:21:33.359
lot of our young people, and we put them in
345
00:21:33.480 --> 00:21:37.240
proximity to these young people so they can inspire them
346
00:21:37.279 --> 00:21:41.799
to become redeemed. America is a country of second chances.
347
00:21:41.880 --> 00:21:46.279
It is a country of redemption, and we have proven
348
00:21:46.960 --> 00:21:51.599
that children can be rescued from their self doubts if
349
00:21:51.640 --> 00:21:58.480
you expose them to mentors that have moral clarity and
350
00:21:58.839 --> 00:22:02.039
put them in relationship with them right, they can guide
351
00:22:02.119 --> 00:22:04.480
them to a more fruitful life.
352
00:22:04.519 --> 00:22:07.319
I'm talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil rights icon.
353
00:22:08.279 --> 00:22:13.200
Your work with seventeen seventy six Knights, it positions itself
354
00:22:13.400 --> 00:22:16.680
as the opposite of the sixteen nineteen project. Why did
355
00:22:16.759 --> 00:22:21.400
you feel it was so important to start seventeen seventy
356
00:22:21.440 --> 00:22:22.359
six Knights.
357
00:22:22.079 --> 00:22:24.680
Because a friend of mine told me that the current
358
00:22:24.839 --> 00:22:28.240
dialogue that we're facing is being driven by a group
359
00:22:28.279 --> 00:22:34.839
of elite whites, guilty whites who are seeking absolution from
360
00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:39.279
crimes they never committed, and by elite, entitled blacks who
361
00:22:39.319 --> 00:22:43.000
are seeking absolutions i mean, justices they never suffered.
362
00:22:44.480 --> 00:22:46.960
Yeah, that pretty much nails it.
363
00:22:47.519 --> 00:22:52.599
And so what we're trying to do is confront that reality.
364
00:22:53.640 --> 00:22:59.920
And since they were using black journalists to take race
365
00:23:00.799 --> 00:23:04.039
in America's birth defective slavery and use it as a
366
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:07.519
bludgeon against the country, we felt that the messengers to
367
00:23:07.680 --> 00:23:11.000
counter that must be black. But we didn't want to
368
00:23:11.279 --> 00:23:15.559
engage in any more gladiatorial debate. We wanted to offer
369
00:23:15.920 --> 00:23:22.000
a creative, inspirational narrative. So in our books that sold
370
00:23:22.039 --> 00:23:26.119
out within three weeks. Usually a book of essays don't
371
00:23:26.160 --> 00:23:30.559
sell like that, right, But because we told inspirational stories
372
00:23:31.160 --> 00:23:35.160
about how twenty blacks were born slaves and dyed millionaires.
373
00:23:35.920 --> 00:23:39.440
And we talked about how the black community in nineteen
374
00:23:39.519 --> 00:23:43.079
thirties to nineteen forty during the depression, had the highest
375
00:23:43.119 --> 00:23:47.480
marriage rate. So we emphasized in our books publication not
376
00:23:47.720 --> 00:23:51.519
how we suffered under the boot of slavery and Jim Crow,
377
00:23:52.039 --> 00:23:55.640
but how we achieved in the face of this opposition.
378
00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:59.319
Last question I have for you looking ahead ten years,
379
00:23:59.400 --> 00:24:04.039
What's one I don't know. Let's just say measurable change
380
00:24:04.759 --> 00:24:08.279
you hope to point to and say we did that.
381
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:13.519
I we have what we call the violence free zones.
382
00:24:13.880 --> 00:24:18.039
The violence we want to demonstrate that we can go
383
00:24:18.160 --> 00:24:23.599
into a whole neighborhood and transform and redeem it from within.
384
00:24:23.880 --> 00:24:25.920
We have islands of excellence.
385
00:24:25.960 --> 00:24:27.799
I can take you into one of the most violent
386
00:24:28.519 --> 00:24:31.799
areas of Washington, d C. And show you where not
387
00:24:31.880 --> 00:24:34.880
a single act of violence or crime has been committed
388
00:24:35.039 --> 00:24:39.759
in one hundred days. Through how yeah, we can bringing
389
00:24:39.799 --> 00:24:46.880
back bringing back people responsibility. What we call antibodies. That
390
00:24:46.960 --> 00:24:51.680
these grassroots leaders that I serve service antibodies. And the
391
00:24:51.680 --> 00:24:54.039
best way to cure the human body is a strength
392
00:24:54.079 --> 00:24:56.640
in its own immune system. So I would like to
393
00:24:56.680 --> 00:24:59.720
be able to have the resources to go into some
394
00:24:59.799 --> 00:25:03.160
of the he's really troubled neighborhoods and demonstrated how we
395
00:25:03.200 --> 00:25:07.839
can bring about a reduction and violence, crime and restore
396
00:25:08.400 --> 00:25:10.319
civil order in those communities.
397
00:25:11.079 --> 00:25:14.000
Bob, I'm sure everybody loved listening to you and Lorraine today.
398
00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:16.079
Thanks so much for stopping by my studio. Thank you
399
00:25:16.200 --> 00:25:21.519
been an honor. Bob Woodson, civil rights icon, community development leader, author, founder,
400
00:25:21.559 --> 00:25:24.400
president of the Woodson Center. Much more to come here
401
00:25:24.440 --> 00:25:27.000
on WTAM eleven hundred right after this.
402
00:25:34.519 --> 00:25:37.519
Seven fifty on the Blue Daddy experience with Sam and
403
00:25:37.559 --> 00:25:42.640
Otis otis flying solo this morning. Sam and you know,
404
00:25:43.559 --> 00:25:45.799
if you were listening yesterday, you realized that she was
405
00:25:45.839 --> 00:25:50.160
a little under the weather. And oh, around twelve thirty
406
00:25:50.240 --> 00:25:52.160
or so last night she sent me a text and said,
407
00:25:52.200 --> 00:25:53.839
of course I didn't get it until I woke up.
408
00:25:53.839 --> 00:25:56.599
This morning, she sent a text saying, hey, one hundred
409
00:25:56.599 --> 00:25:59.279
times worse than I was this morning. Don't think I
410
00:25:59.319 --> 00:26:01.880
can make it in I'm sorry. Well, you know you
411
00:26:01.920 --> 00:26:04.799
gotta do what you gotta do. I can make it sol.
412
00:26:04.920 --> 00:26:07.079
It's not the end of the world. It's a lot
413
00:26:07.119 --> 00:26:09.759
easier bouncing ideas off of each other but you know,
414
00:26:09.920 --> 00:26:12.839
we can make it work. And if you have anything
415
00:26:12.839 --> 00:26:15.359
you'd like to comment on, whether we've been talking about it,
416
00:26:15.400 --> 00:26:18.519
whether it's bloom Daddy's topic, whether it's something you else
417
00:26:18.559 --> 00:26:22.559
you want to bring up about White House renovation or
418
00:26:22.759 --> 00:26:26.119
the government shut down or anything of that nature, feel
419
00:26:26.160 --> 00:26:28.079
free to give us a call one eight hundred sixty two,
420
00:26:28.119 --> 00:26:32.200
four eleven seventy. Keep in mind Sam has access to
421
00:26:32.319 --> 00:26:36.039
the text number I don't, so it does not going
422
00:26:36.079 --> 00:26:38.319
to do you any good to text today, and she
423
00:26:38.519 --> 00:26:40.559
has access to the Facebook, so it's not going to
424
00:26:40.640 --> 00:26:43.279
do any good to comment on the Facebook page. So
425
00:26:43.400 --> 00:26:45.079
if you want to talk, you have to call me.
426
00:26:45.559 --> 00:26:47.079
Do it the old fashioned way and give us a
427
00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:49.720
call one eight hundred sixty two four eleven seventy. Be
428
00:26:49.920 --> 00:26:52.720
patient because as I've got everything in front of me,
429
00:26:53.559 --> 00:26:55.079
I may not be able to see the phone ring
430
00:26:55.160 --> 00:26:57.640
right away, So just you know, let it ring and
431
00:26:57.680 --> 00:27:00.640
I'll get to you eventually, you know. And it's no
432
00:27:00.759 --> 00:27:04.680
secret when Sam's here and we get into a topic,
433
00:27:04.759 --> 00:27:08.240
and sometimes we get into some music, and we had
434
00:27:08.240 --> 00:27:11.519
a couple of stories on some music related stuff, and
435
00:27:12.720 --> 00:27:15.319
while while bloom Daddy was in his interview, I just
436
00:27:15.359 --> 00:27:17.759
happened to be scrolling through some Facebook and I just
437
00:27:18.400 --> 00:27:20.039
there was a It just kind of pops up. I
438
00:27:20.039 --> 00:27:23.640
get this. It pops up on my timeline. It's called
439
00:27:25.200 --> 00:27:28.519
Charlie's Eighties Attic and it basically a lot of times
440
00:27:28.519 --> 00:27:31.640
it will give you a week or something, basically like
441
00:27:31.680 --> 00:27:35.039
the Billboard Top forty or whatever. So it pops up
442
00:27:35.079 --> 00:27:39.079
that it's the US Pop chart from October twenty second,
443
00:27:39.200 --> 00:27:40.079
nineteen eighty eight.
444
00:27:40.119 --> 00:27:41.039
It's the Top twenty.
445
00:27:41.680 --> 00:27:43.440
And I was looking down and I'm thinking to myself,
446
00:27:43.440 --> 00:27:45.279
you know, this is kind of in my wheelhouse my
447
00:27:45.359 --> 00:27:51.119
college days eighty eight and when I was DJing some
448
00:27:51.279 --> 00:27:53.720
frat parties or you know, we were having parties at
449
00:27:53.759 --> 00:27:56.880
our apartment or a friend's apartment and we would be
450
00:27:56.920 --> 00:28:01.160
set up our equipment and be the musical entertainment for
451
00:28:01.200 --> 00:28:04.160
the evening. Just looking at some of these songs that
452
00:28:04.200 --> 00:28:06.079
you know, they bring back some memories, but some of
453
00:28:06.119 --> 00:28:08.759
them you think about them and they're like, man, these
454
00:28:08.759 --> 00:28:12.119
were bad songs like Phil Collins a Groovy kind of Love,
455
00:28:12.799 --> 00:28:16.599
UB forty's Red Red Wine. But I just happened to
456
00:28:16.640 --> 00:28:22.839
go down and it spot eight and nine, both songs
457
00:28:23.279 --> 00:28:25.559
not the same song with two different versions but two
458
00:28:25.640 --> 00:28:28.440
totally different songs but with the same title Don't Be
459
00:28:28.559 --> 00:28:31.640
Cruel Bobby Brown at number eight and Cheap Tricks cover
460
00:28:31.720 --> 00:28:34.559
of the Elvis Presley's Don't Be Cruel at number nine.
461
00:28:35.119 --> 00:28:37.519
Just didn't get a chance to look it up, but
462
00:28:37.640 --> 00:28:41.119
to see if that's the first time that two songs
463
00:28:41.200 --> 00:28:46.720
with the same title but different songs were in the
464
00:28:46.720 --> 00:28:48.599
top twenty at the same time, actually in the top
465
00:28:48.640 --> 00:28:51.519
ten at the same time, So just curious. You know,
466
00:28:51.599 --> 00:28:54.519
some other songs on there, the Locomotion to cover by
467
00:28:54.599 --> 00:28:59.680
Kylie Minogue in Excess and Avertaris Apart Rod Stories Forever,
468
00:28:59.799 --> 00:29:03.920
Young bon Jovi's on there with Bad Medicine. So two
469
00:29:03.960 --> 00:29:07.480
songs from the Cocktail soundtrack, Don't Worry, Be Happy and
470
00:29:07.559 --> 00:29:11.000
Kokomo by the Beach Boys. So anyway, just a little
471
00:29:11.079 --> 00:29:14.079
just happened to catch my eye there. In case you
472
00:29:14.200 --> 00:29:16.799
missed it, Mattel, if you're a Barbie collector, you might
473
00:29:16.839 --> 00:29:19.880
want to get into this because Barbie has a new
474
00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:24.480
inspired doll by Fleetwood Max singer Stevie Nicks, and it's
475
00:29:24.559 --> 00:29:27.839
kind of highlighting the solo career. It's called the Stevie
476
00:29:27.920 --> 00:29:31.880
Nicks Bella Donna Barbie marks the forty third anniversary of
477
00:29:31.920 --> 00:29:35.960
her debut solo album Belladonna, which featured the hits Edge
478
00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:38.640
of seventeen and Stopped Dragging My Heart Around with Tom Petty.
479
00:29:39.279 --> 00:29:42.640
The doll depicts Stevie Nicks in the white flowing dress
480
00:29:42.839 --> 00:29:46.279
from the nineteen eighty one album cover. So, you know,
481
00:29:47.039 --> 00:29:51.920
Barbie's very iconic, very collectible. Maybe you're not a Barbie collector,
482
00:29:51.960 --> 00:29:55.079
but you're a Fleetwood Mac fan. Maybe a Stevie Nicks fan,
483
00:29:56.200 --> 00:29:58.519
rock and roll fan might be one. Just a kind
484
00:29:58.559 --> 00:30:02.839
of maybe make that purchase and put it away for
485
00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:05.920
your kids or grandkids for down the road.
486
00:30:06.960 --> 00:30:07.119
You know.
487
00:30:07.160 --> 00:30:10.880
We keep it on the music theme. There's a survey
488
00:30:10.920 --> 00:30:14.400
of two thousand music lovers. They found that thirty eight
489
00:30:14.440 --> 00:30:19.240
percent of Americans believe streaming music is superior to physical media.
490
00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:23.440
I don't know if it's superior. It's a lot easier
491
00:30:23.480 --> 00:30:26.799
to access, let's put it that way. Fourteen percent think
492
00:30:26.960 --> 00:30:29.799
listening to the radio is the best way to consume music,
493
00:30:30.079 --> 00:30:33.319
thank you, and fifteen percent prefer to hear their favorite
494
00:30:33.400 --> 00:30:37.759
artists live. The average respondent spends two hundred and seventy
495
00:30:37.759 --> 00:30:40.160
four bucks on music in a year, including concerts and
496
00:30:40.200 --> 00:30:43.799
streaming services well anymore two hundred and seventy four bucks.
497
00:30:43.839 --> 00:30:47.000
If you had a one concert, that could be the ticket. However,
498
00:30:47.079 --> 00:30:49.359
the Talker Research poll found that thirty five percent of
499
00:30:49.400 --> 00:30:52.960
adults believe a month of streaming shouldn't cost more than
500
00:30:53.039 --> 00:30:56.440
ten bucks, but fifty four percent would pay twenty for
501
00:30:56.519 --> 00:31:00.599
a vinyl record. Says here, streaming is great because you
502
00:31:00.640 --> 00:31:03.599
can obtain nearly anything you require almost all the time.
503
00:31:04.200 --> 00:31:07.480
That's quote by Steve Nixon of Free Jazz Lessons dot Com.
504
00:31:07.880 --> 00:31:10.880
He also said with physical music, the experience is different.
505
00:31:10.960 --> 00:31:14.640
If you buy something physical, you support the artists, which
506
00:31:14.680 --> 00:31:17.440
is true. And I think that's one of the biggest
507
00:31:17.480 --> 00:31:23.920
complaints that artists have about streaming is the the fact
508
00:31:23.960 --> 00:31:27.559
that they're not always getting you know, they're there due
509
00:31:27.720 --> 00:31:30.200
their due, their fair share of the money. Let's put
510
00:31:30.200 --> 00:31:35.119
it that way. When it comes to live music, there
511
00:31:35.160 --> 00:31:38.079
are and I'll just I'll throw this out there.
512
00:31:38.119 --> 00:31:38.319
You know.
513
00:31:39.119 --> 00:31:42.799
Two weeks ago went and saw Elvis Costello here at
514
00:31:42.799 --> 00:31:47.000
the Capitol Theater. And I love Elvis Costello, but I
515
00:31:47.079 --> 00:31:51.000
thought the live show was not It was not what
516
00:31:51.119 --> 00:31:57.359
I expected. And I think there's some people that would
517
00:31:57.359 --> 00:32:02.400
agree with me, the musicians. She was great, The music
518
00:32:02.519 --> 00:32:04.480
was okay, you know, was was good. I mean it
519
00:32:04.519 --> 00:32:08.519
was his songs, you know, but like the show itself
520
00:32:09.160 --> 00:32:13.680
just didn't get you involved. And you know, I think
521
00:32:13.720 --> 00:32:15.559
that's a big thing when you when you go to
522
00:32:15.559 --> 00:32:18.039
see a live artist. I mean, I've seen, good God,
523
00:32:18.079 --> 00:32:21.880
I don't know how many concerts I've seen. I've probably seen,
524
00:32:22.680 --> 00:32:25.240
you know, twenty to twenty five rock and roll Hall
525
00:32:25.279 --> 00:32:31.119
of famers play Springsteen, Mellencamp, I've seen the Stones, I've
526
00:32:31.119 --> 00:32:35.000
seen Rod Stewart, I've seen you know my good it
527
00:32:35.039 --> 00:32:39.079
is Tom Petty, you know, and they all do it differently. Obviously,
528
00:32:39.720 --> 00:32:41.599
Bruce has claimed the fame as you know that he
529
00:32:41.640 --> 00:32:44.640
plays a three hour show minimum. You know, if it's
530
00:32:44.720 --> 00:32:48.839
under three hours, you got jypped. But and Mellencamp at
531
00:32:48.839 --> 00:32:50.160
one point in time was a two to two and
532
00:32:50.200 --> 00:32:53.440
a half hour guy before his health issues kicked in.
533
00:32:53.720 --> 00:32:56.640
But you know, I mean, if you go see I
534
00:32:56.680 --> 00:32:58.759
have a friend that when he goes to a concert,
535
00:32:58.799 --> 00:33:03.240
he wants to see the artist performed the song exactly
536
00:33:03.279 --> 00:33:07.559
like it was on the on the recorded version, And
537
00:33:07.640 --> 00:33:10.039
I just don't know how you you know, first off,
538
00:33:10.480 --> 00:33:12.400
that would be that's great if you just want to
539
00:33:12.440 --> 00:33:15.759
sing along. But I think the interaction with the crowd
540
00:33:15.920 --> 00:33:19.759
sometimes extending it, adding in an extra verse or you
541
00:33:19.759 --> 00:33:24.119
know some you know, an extra guitar solo or something
542
00:33:24.160 --> 00:33:27.000
of that nature. You know, it mixes it mixes it
543
00:33:27.079 --> 00:33:28.519
up a little bit. And I think that a lot
544
00:33:28.559 --> 00:33:32.160
of times. And I can tell you this from seeing Springsteen.
545
00:33:32.279 --> 00:33:35.400
You know that he might take a three minute song
546
00:33:35.440 --> 00:33:38.920
and turn it into a ten minute you know, this
547
00:33:39.039 --> 00:33:42.359
ten minute epic version of it, and you know it
548
00:33:42.559 --> 00:33:45.920
just live music. You just it just kind of gets.
549
00:33:45.759 --> 00:33:47.640
You in the mood.
550
00:33:47.359 --> 00:33:50.440
It gets you to where you need to be. Anybody
551
00:33:50.440 --> 00:33:53.400
that has been to Jamboree and the Hills, there are
552
00:33:53.480 --> 00:33:56.400
good live performers and there are bad live performers, so
553
00:33:57.319 --> 00:33:58.559
you know, you know who they are.
554
00:33:58.599 --> 00:33:59.759
And if you go to.
555
00:34:00.039 --> 00:34:01.000
N you know what you like.
556
00:34:01.160 --> 00:34:04.480

WWVA starts now.
566
00:34:46.239 --> 00:34:49.679
News Radio eleven seventy gets the bloom Daddy Experience. Hey,
567
00:34:49.679 --> 00:34:51.760
it's eight six, let's get this hour rolling.
568
00:34:52.480 --> 00:34:52.920
I want to.
569
00:34:52.840 --> 00:34:55.079
Invite somebody very special to the show right now. His
570
00:34:55.199 --> 00:34:59.800
name is Bob Woodson, civil rights leader, community development leader, author, founder,
571
00:35:00.079 --> 00:35:02.679
resident of the Woodston Center. That's a nonprofit research and
572
00:35:02.719 --> 00:35:07.639
demonstration organization that supports neighborhood based initiatives to revitalize low
573
00:35:07.719 --> 00:35:12.079
income communities. He also launched the Centers seventeen seventy six
574
00:35:12.360 --> 00:35:15.639
Units campaign. He was in Lorraine earlier today giving a
575
00:35:15.679 --> 00:35:19.199
speech to lawmakers other individuals, and he's kind enough to
576
00:35:19.199 --> 00:35:20.719
stop by the studio here today.
577
00:35:20.719 --> 00:35:23.000
Bob, thanks so much for coming in. Pleased to be here.
578
00:35:23.480 --> 00:35:24.119
I want to start.
579
00:35:24.159 --> 00:35:25.920
I mean, there's so many things to hit on here,
580
00:35:26.000 --> 00:35:32.440
but neighborhood empowerment has been huge for you, and solutions
581
00:35:32.519 --> 00:35:35.239
driven by the people within the community rather than top
582
00:35:35.280 --> 00:35:40.239
down government programs. How did your upbringing, how did your
583
00:35:40.360 --> 00:35:44.039
military service in the Air Force shape your philosophy.
584
00:35:44.920 --> 00:35:49.440
Well, thanks for asking. I think. I was born in.
585
00:35:51.840 --> 00:35:57.519
Nineteen thirty seven in Philadelphia, a blue collar neighborhood. I
586
00:35:57.559 --> 00:36:01.320
was the youngest of five children, and my dad fought
587
00:36:01.320 --> 00:36:05.079
in the First World War. He was a Harlem Hellcats,
588
00:36:06.719 --> 00:36:11.480
but he was wounded there and suffered some illnesses that
589
00:36:11.639 --> 00:36:14.039
later took his life when I was nine years old.
590
00:36:14.599 --> 00:36:17.920
So I was left with my mother with a fifth
591
00:36:17.920 --> 00:36:22.079
grade education, the youngest of five children to raise. But
592
00:36:22.159 --> 00:36:26.119
the neighborhood was stable, as I tell people, in those days,
593
00:36:26.559 --> 00:36:30.440
elderly people could walk freely without being fear of being
594
00:36:30.440 --> 00:36:35.320
assaulted by their grandchildren, never heard guns fired, and ninety
595
00:36:35.719 --> 00:36:38.119
eight percent of the households had a man and.
596
00:36:38.159 --> 00:36:39.239
Women raising children.
597
00:36:40.159 --> 00:36:42.800
But there were all kinds of other support structures, the
598
00:36:42.880 --> 00:36:48.320
Elks and other self help organizations.
599
00:36:48.400 --> 00:36:49.480
But it also meant.
600
00:36:49.280 --> 00:36:53.679
That I had to rely on my peers more than
601
00:36:53.719 --> 00:36:59.119
my blood family. And so I guess, and there were
602
00:36:59.199 --> 00:37:02.960
five of us. One of them, some of your listeners
603
00:37:03.000 --> 00:37:04.920
will know, was Matt Robinson.
604
00:37:05.000 --> 00:37:06.719
He was Gordon on Sesame.
605
00:37:06.320 --> 00:37:10.480
Street, okay, the first black guy on Sesame Street. His
606
00:37:11.159 --> 00:37:14.400
daughter is Holly Robinson, the actress who's married to Rodney Peake.
607
00:37:15.480 --> 00:37:18.599
I had a chance to eulogize him about fifteen years
608
00:37:18.599 --> 00:37:19.599
ago in Hollywood.
609
00:37:20.599 --> 00:37:22.000
But so I guess I.
610
00:37:22.599 --> 00:37:27.679
Gained us understood why kids joined gangs or have organizations
611
00:37:27.719 --> 00:37:31.719
outside of the family, But we were all responsible. They
612
00:37:31.719 --> 00:37:33.960
were a year older than me, and when they graduated,
613
00:37:34.880 --> 00:37:37.960
I was left unaffiliated. So I dropped out of high
614
00:37:37.960 --> 00:37:41.079
school and went into the military. Didn't have much interest
615
00:37:41.119 --> 00:37:43.239
in education, but I was always good in math, so
616
00:37:43.280 --> 00:37:46.679
I had straight a's because they have to study. And
617
00:37:46.800 --> 00:37:49.840
the Air Force, the first time I had left the
618
00:37:49.880 --> 00:37:55.639
Tri state area and went and really got my eye open,
619
00:37:56.800 --> 00:38:00.440
taught me discipline. I heard white people with Southern accents
620
00:38:00.480 --> 00:38:07.199
for the first time, interesting, and so it just exposed
621
00:38:07.239 --> 00:38:09.079
me to a whole new world. I was in station
622
00:38:09.239 --> 00:38:11.480
in New York and then Mississippi, so I had a
623
00:38:11.559 --> 00:38:15.519
chance to see racism in the raw, but it didn't
624
00:38:15.559 --> 00:38:18.400
freak me out because I was used to going around
625
00:38:18.440 --> 00:38:21.480
with my own folks anyway, and so we just found
626
00:38:21.480 --> 00:38:25.440
our way. And so I finished high school in the military,
627
00:38:25.719 --> 00:38:28.920
and they trained me and went to the space program
628
00:38:29.039 --> 00:38:36.599
and flew the first Earth satellite attempt, and so I
629
00:38:36.159 --> 00:38:39.920
just kind of gat it matured. It really matured me.
630
00:38:40.800 --> 00:38:44.679
Plus it really integrated people with different walks of life.
631
00:38:45.119 --> 00:38:48.280
You founded the Woodston Center, launched the seventeen seventy six
632
00:38:48.480 --> 00:38:52.280
Nights Initiative. Did you have an Aha moment when you
633
00:38:52.360 --> 00:38:59.599
decided to focus on entrepreneurship and self help rather than hey,
634
00:38:59.760 --> 00:39:02.920
let rely on government welfare policy reforms?
635
00:39:03.079 --> 00:39:05.239
Yeah, well, I this came out. I was a young
636
00:39:05.840 --> 00:39:07.039
civil rights.
637
00:39:06.760 --> 00:39:13.039
Activist after I finished graduate school, and I was leading
638
00:39:13.079 --> 00:39:17.480
civil rights demonstrations in Barred Rustern's hometown of Westchester, Pennsylvania.
639
00:39:18.159 --> 00:39:21.760
I met doctor King through him. But something happened to me.
640
00:39:21.920 --> 00:39:25.119
First of all, I parted company with the movement on
641
00:39:25.119 --> 00:39:29.519
the issue of forced bussing for integration. I was against integration, well,
642
00:39:29.559 --> 00:39:33.199
at least as the opposite of segregation. Me was desegregation,
643
00:39:33.400 --> 00:39:37.079
not integrated, So that put me at odds with the leadership.
644
00:39:37.800 --> 00:39:40.559
The second thing that turned me off was we led
645
00:39:40.599 --> 00:39:45.159
demonstrations outside of a pharmaceutical company, and when they desegregated,
646
00:39:45.199 --> 00:39:48.960
they hired nine black PhD chemists. Then I realized that
647
00:39:49.119 --> 00:39:56.119
class was interfering with race. And so when they and
648
00:39:56.159 --> 00:39:59.360
so I sensed right then that a bait and switch
649
00:39:59.440 --> 00:40:03.199
game was going on. Then a lot of the civil
650
00:40:03.280 --> 00:40:06.880
rights leaders became elected officials, and then I saw the
651
00:40:06.960 --> 00:40:09.000
sixties poverty programs.
652
00:40:09.039 --> 00:40:10.920
I knew from the beginning.
653
00:40:11.159 --> 00:40:14.840
That it was going to be worse for poor blacks
654
00:40:15.960 --> 00:40:19.679
than anything that I witnessed experience under segregation, and I
655
00:40:19.760 --> 00:40:20.800
was proven to be true.
656
00:40:22.239 --> 00:40:24.880
Talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil rights leader, community
657
00:40:24.880 --> 00:40:30.400
development leader, author, founder, president of the Woodson Center, when well,
658
00:40:30.639 --> 00:40:34.760
in your view, what are the biggest misconceptions people, especially
659
00:40:34.760 --> 00:40:37.960
outside the inner city context, have about how change actually
660
00:40:38.000 --> 00:40:39.760
happens in low income neighborhoods.
661
00:40:40.039 --> 00:40:43.159
Well, first of all, the biggest myth is that with
662
00:40:43.920 --> 00:40:47.639
the deterioration that occurred in the black community, somehow that's
663
00:40:47.679 --> 00:40:50.800
the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. That is just
664
00:40:50.920 --> 00:40:55.719
not true, and there's evidence to support there that a
665
00:40:55.760 --> 00:40:58.400
lot of the decline that you're talking in the black
666
00:40:58.440 --> 00:41:04.360
family as a consequence of the sixties, where welfare was
667
00:41:04.639 --> 00:41:11.159
not only encouraged, but it was demanded and people were
668
00:41:11.519 --> 00:41:17.440
recruited into the welfare system, and the socialists Cloud and
669
00:41:17.480 --> 00:41:22.599
Pivot at Columba University had this paper that says the
670
00:41:22.679 --> 00:41:27.400
best way to fight poverty is redistributed income that's socialism.
671
00:41:27.519 --> 00:41:30.719
But we're going to use a black community as a
672
00:41:30.760 --> 00:41:33.599
battering ram. And so there was used to be a
673
00:41:33.639 --> 00:41:35.800
stigma of black commune on being a welfare but they
674
00:41:35.880 --> 00:41:39.559
changed that and then the government started to recruit blacks,
675
00:41:39.639 --> 00:41:43.719
and so more blacks flooded into the welfare system in
676
00:41:43.920 --> 00:41:47.320
four years in the early seventies, at a time when
677
00:41:47.360 --> 00:41:51.199
the unemployment rate for blacks was four percent, and so
678
00:41:51.360 --> 00:41:54.840
what they predicted was true. There was you separate work
679
00:41:54.840 --> 00:42:01.760
from income and school dropout rights out of wedlock births.
680
00:42:02.599 --> 00:42:03.239
All of that.
681
00:42:05.000 --> 00:42:09.360
Occurred as a consequence of federal policies that separated work
682
00:42:09.400 --> 00:42:13.320
from income. And then the civil rights leaders became elected
683
00:42:13.360 --> 00:42:16.880
officials in these cities and they were administering the twenty
684
00:42:16.920 --> 00:42:21.719
two trillion dollars and where seventy percent of the money
685
00:42:21.760 --> 00:42:24.599
goes to the paper who served the poor. So we
686
00:42:24.760 --> 00:42:28.599
created a commodity out of poor people, and the civil
687
00:42:28.679 --> 00:42:34.920
rights people didn't raise any.
688
00:42:33.880 --> 00:42:37.480
How is what you just said received within the black community.
689
00:42:38.000 --> 00:42:41.199
Among low income people, it is well received. There's this
690
00:42:41.440 --> 00:42:45.760
myth that somehow the elite leadership speaks for all Black
691
00:42:45.760 --> 00:42:50.800
America on issues of choice and education. Only eight percent
692
00:42:50.840 --> 00:42:54.239
of the leadership supports it. Sixty percent of low income
693
00:42:54.280 --> 00:42:58.639
black supported the leadership supports defund the police. Eighty percent
694
00:42:58.679 --> 00:43:01.480
of low income Blacks do not support defund the police.
695
00:43:03.000 --> 00:43:06.000
Sixty percent of blacks don't believe that racism is the
696
00:43:06.079 --> 00:43:11.440
biggest barrier to flourishing. The leadership, oh doesn't believe it.
697
00:43:11.559 --> 00:43:15.440
So there's a huge gap in the black community. But
698
00:43:16.239 --> 00:43:19.079
you don't know that because low income blacks don't have
699
00:43:19.119 --> 00:43:19.719
a voice.
700
00:43:20.880 --> 00:43:24.000
I'm going to continue this conversation. I've got to take
701
00:43:24.000 --> 00:43:25.679
a break. More of the interview coming up here on
702
00:43:25.719 --> 00:43:32.960
eleven seventy wwvs.
703
00:43:31.880 --> 00:43:34.960
Hey twenty on this Thursday, The Blue Daddy Experience of
704
00:43:35.039 --> 00:43:39.960
Sam and otis news Radio eleven seventy wwva otis flying solo.
705
00:43:40.079 --> 00:43:43.360
Sam's on taking the day off to kind of hel
706
00:43:43.480 --> 00:43:47.000
up not feeling well, and if you listened yesterday, you
707
00:43:47.039 --> 00:43:50.679
know she sounded like crap. So before we went to
708
00:43:50.760 --> 00:43:53.400
the top of the hour news break, I was talking
709
00:43:53.400 --> 00:43:56.000
about some music, live music, so on and so forth,
710
00:43:56.559 --> 00:43:59.320
and got a phone call from Craig from Bysville and
711
00:43:59.400 --> 00:44:01.119
he joins this now good morning, Craig.
712
00:44:02.199 --> 00:44:06.920
Warning the subject he was talking about I and the
713
00:44:07.000 --> 00:44:11.360
songs you read off you know, I grew up in
714
00:44:11.400 --> 00:44:14.400
the sixties and seventies, and it just seems like from
715
00:44:14.480 --> 00:44:19.000
seventy five to eighty five there was some change in
716
00:44:19.079 --> 00:44:22.639
the music, and I really couldn't put my finger on it.
717
00:44:23.719 --> 00:44:29.480
I'm thinking maybe discoll but then disco went by the wayside,
718
00:44:29.519 --> 00:44:32.639
and then I guess you'd call a rock and roll
719
00:44:32.760 --> 00:44:37.039
tried to make it come, you know, maybe comeback. And
720
00:44:37.320 --> 00:44:41.199
it's just funny how just a matter of ten years booth,
721
00:44:41.639 --> 00:44:46.519
you know, it changed so much, you know, especially the
722
00:44:46.679 --> 00:44:50.239
characters you know, like the Hood and Rolling Stones, and
723
00:44:51.440 --> 00:44:54.800
then all these other artists submerged and some went away.
724
00:44:56.119 --> 00:45:01.760
Well, I mean the music is very for maybe lack
725
00:45:01.800 --> 00:45:04.239
of a better term, it's kind of cyclical, but in
726
00:45:04.559 --> 00:45:07.719
it maybe not. It doesn't doesn't always come back. But
727
00:45:09.119 --> 00:45:11.599
I think, like you said, you're you're obviously a little
728
00:45:11.599 --> 00:45:13.360
bit older than me. I'm gonna guess that you're probably
729
00:45:13.400 --> 00:45:18.119
in your mid to late sixties, correct, Okay, so I'm
730
00:45:18.159 --> 00:45:20.440
in my mid to late fifties, so I'm ten years
731
00:45:20.440 --> 00:45:23.719
behind you. So I think the music when you grow
732
00:45:24.239 --> 00:45:27.280
what what you listen to when you're growing up, is
733
00:45:27.320 --> 00:45:31.920
what you there there's a there's a window where you're
734
00:45:32.000 --> 00:45:36.239
influenced by your music. You know, I have kids, and
735
00:45:36.280 --> 00:45:39.079
I have friends that are younger, and I do not
736
00:45:39.280 --> 00:45:44.559
understand their musical tastes. Okay, my parents didn't understand.
737
00:45:44.079 --> 00:45:45.119
My musical tastes.
738
00:45:45.800 --> 00:45:50.679
So you know, it's it's that there's a window and
739
00:45:50.840 --> 00:45:53.360
and and we had an article on it one time
740
00:45:54.119 --> 00:45:58.639
a while back. But your music influences are like between
741
00:45:58.639 --> 00:46:02.400
a certain age, like between thirteen and sixteen and then
742
00:46:02.719 --> 00:46:05.679
and then it kicks in. And that's what you're you know,
743
00:46:05.760 --> 00:46:08.239
I mean, you know, you're you grew up with the
744
00:46:08.239 --> 00:46:10.599
Who and led Zeppelin and the Stones that were that
745
00:46:10.679 --> 00:46:13.079
were at the top of the charts in my wheelhouse.
746
00:46:13.119 --> 00:46:15.599
I mean it was Phil Collins, Daryl Hall and John Oots.
747
00:46:15.599 --> 00:46:18.920
I mean so a little bit. But the you know,
748
00:46:19.039 --> 00:46:22.239
Zeppelin was there in eighty eighty one. You know, the
749
00:46:22.280 --> 00:46:26.519
Stones haven't gone away, you know. So, I mean, you know,
750
00:46:26.599 --> 00:46:30.960
I get where you're coming from. But like today's music,
751
00:46:31.000 --> 00:46:32.840
I mean, hell, there's no way I can listen to
752
00:46:32.920 --> 00:46:33.679
ninety percent of.
753
00:46:33.639 --> 00:46:39.400
It right right I there, And yeah, you explained that
754
00:46:39.679 --> 00:46:44.440
very well. You know that you're right. You know what
755
00:46:44.559 --> 00:46:47.000
we grow up with and what makes us feel good.
756
00:46:47.239 --> 00:46:51.320
You know, you know, cranking up that we'll get fulled again,
757
00:46:51.800 --> 00:46:53.719
you know, shrowing down the highway.
758
00:46:54.119 --> 00:46:54.320
Yeah.
759
00:46:54.360 --> 00:46:56.960
Well, I mean, and you know, if you're if you're
760
00:46:57.000 --> 00:47:00.960
a music person, like I like to consider myself. I
761
00:47:01.000 --> 00:47:03.280
like to consider myself because I can. I can listen
762
00:47:03.320 --> 00:47:06.920
to just about anything. But you know, if you take
763
00:47:07.000 --> 00:47:10.400
me back to you know, the fifties and the sixties,
764
00:47:10.440 --> 00:47:12.239
like I can listen to Bill Haley and the Comments,
765
00:47:12.239 --> 00:47:15.840
I can listen to uh Seacrews, I can.
766
00:47:16.079 --> 00:47:16.559
You know they're there.
767
00:47:16.679 --> 00:47:19.400
There's oldies out there, Elvis, you know that you could
768
00:47:19.400 --> 00:47:21.760
that you can relate to. And you're sitting there and
769
00:47:21.760 --> 00:47:25.119
you're thinking, man, this was great music. The the Animals,
770
00:47:25.639 --> 00:47:30.199
you know, early to midst of course, the Beatles, like
771
00:47:30.280 --> 00:47:33.000
you said, the Stones, Yeah you know. But I mean
772
00:47:33.039 --> 00:47:36.639
I also, I don't think I'm closed minded when it
773
00:47:36.679 --> 00:47:37.320
comes to music.
774
00:47:37.360 --> 00:47:37.519
Now.
775
00:47:37.519 --> 00:47:39.760
There's there's groups that I don't like that are very
776
00:47:39.760 --> 00:47:42.400
popular with other people, Like I'm not. I can't listen
777
00:47:42.440 --> 00:47:44.800
to Pink Floyd and I can't listen to Rush. I
778
00:47:44.880 --> 00:47:48.679
just there they don't for whatever reason, I don't. I
779
00:47:48.679 --> 00:47:49.639
can't relate to them.
780
00:47:50.639 --> 00:47:52.719
I hear that absolutely here.
781
00:47:53.239 --> 00:47:57.920
And and you know, music is music is definitely subjective
782
00:47:58.559 --> 00:48:00.400
because it's what you what you grew up with. But
783
00:48:00.559 --> 00:48:02.599
you if you had older brothers or sisters, or your
784
00:48:02.599 --> 00:48:06.559
best friends or or what. Like one of my best friends,
785
00:48:06.599 --> 00:48:10.079
he loved R e O speedwagons, high in fidelity. I
786
00:48:10.079 --> 00:48:14.559
I just didn't do anything for me. So yeah, yeah,
787
00:48:14.800 --> 00:48:15.519
but love it.
788
00:48:16.599 --> 00:48:20.400
Go ahead, and Jane, you know he was talking about Rush.
789
00:48:20.480 --> 00:48:22.559
I'll just finish up with this. I had a friend
790
00:48:22.559 --> 00:48:26.320
who loved Rush, and that's all he would play. You know,
791
00:48:26.480 --> 00:48:30.079
this is back in the Yeah, I remember when he
792
00:48:30.159 --> 00:48:34.039
was going over to Pogos Pub in Youngstown and finally
793
00:48:34.119 --> 00:48:36.800
my friend reached from the back seat pulled out the.
794
00:48:36.800 --> 00:48:41.400
Tape through nice I can appreciate that.
795
00:48:42.599 --> 00:48:46.480
Oh yeah, it was you know, a big to do
796
00:48:46.960 --> 00:48:50.719
once we stopped, you know, but uh, you know, not
797
00:48:50.880 --> 00:48:53.840
a fight. Just you know, and listen to it.
798
00:48:54.119 --> 00:48:56.400
And to the people that like Rush, that's that's great.
799
00:48:56.760 --> 00:48:59.360
It just doesn't it doesn't do anything for me. You know,
800
00:48:59.840 --> 00:49:03.119
if you like him, then so be it. So but okay,
801
00:49:03.119 --> 00:49:07.519
I appreciate the call. Craig, all right, you too quick
802
00:49:07.519 --> 00:49:09.840
story about a Rush of what he was talking about
803
00:49:09.840 --> 00:49:12.000
and having a friend. I had a friend. I still
804
00:49:12.039 --> 00:49:15.199
have a friend. He's a year older than me and
805
00:49:16.719 --> 00:49:20.039
huge Rush fan, and he this is like when concerts
806
00:49:20.039 --> 00:49:22.280
were coming out on DVD and so on and so forth.
807
00:49:22.320 --> 00:49:25.199
So he approached me and said, hey, I want you
808
00:49:25.239 --> 00:49:29.280
to watch this Rush concert on DVD and I'll watch.
809
00:49:29.480 --> 00:49:31.760
He said, do you have a Springsteen concert on DVD?
810
00:49:32.480 --> 00:49:34.320
And I said, yeah, I got a couple, And I said,
811
00:49:34.400 --> 00:49:36.320
you know, I was trying to find the best one,
812
00:49:36.360 --> 00:49:39.199
so I got the one from Barcelona, not the best one,
813
00:49:39.199 --> 00:49:40.559
but probably the best one in my collection.
814
00:49:41.519 --> 00:49:42.840
So we swapped.
815
00:49:44.039 --> 00:49:48.079
DVDs and I sat there and like the biggest thing
816
00:49:48.159 --> 00:49:52.039
that he excited him was when the guitar player from
817
00:49:52.079 --> 00:49:54.199
Russian I can't think of his name off the top
818
00:49:54.239 --> 00:49:56.280
of my head, but he does like a leg kick,
819
00:49:56.320 --> 00:49:58.920
and I'm like, like, that's your excitement of the show
820
00:49:58.960 --> 00:50:02.920
where you have jumping all over the stage, playing different instruments,
821
00:50:03.400 --> 00:50:06.440
interacting with the crowd, so on and so forth. And
822
00:50:06.480 --> 00:50:08.840
it's just in his response to me, was I forgot
823
00:50:08.880 --> 00:50:12.639
how he said, I didn't realize Bruce Springsteen was that
824
00:50:12.800 --> 00:50:16.760
good of a guitarist. That was his interpretation. My interpretation
825
00:50:16.880 --> 00:50:20.559
on the rest wal the Rush DVD was the musicianship
826
00:50:20.679 --> 00:50:24.079
was great, but the concert itself was very boring. So
827
00:50:24.440 --> 00:50:27.599
that's just again, that's just me. So, hey, you want
828
00:50:27.639 --> 00:50:29.679
to just give a quick shout out on a couple
829
00:50:29.800 --> 00:50:33.760
things that are happening today. Flu shots are available free
830
00:50:33.760 --> 00:50:36.719
of charge in Wheeling. Well Point, West Virginia will host
831
00:50:36.719 --> 00:50:39.679
of vaccine clinic at Wheeley Island. That's the casino on
832
00:50:39.800 --> 00:50:42.519
south Stone Street. Shots will only be given to adults
833
00:50:42.519 --> 00:50:45.679
over the age of eighteen. Anyone that gets a vaccine
834
00:50:45.719 --> 00:50:48.159
will also be gifted a twenty five dollars gift card.
835
00:50:48.599 --> 00:50:51.480
And for our listeners and friends up in Weirton, more
836
00:50:51.480 --> 00:50:54.679
than a thousand residents will be without power today. It's
837
00:50:54.760 --> 00:50:57.760
part of a planned outage Vermond Power. Those in the
838
00:50:57.800 --> 00:51:01.920
Whirton and Marlin Heights area will be impacted. Notifications will
839
00:51:01.960 --> 00:51:04.599
be sent to those affected, and the outage is expected
840
00:51:04.639 --> 00:51:07.559
to last from about eight thirty, so about right now
841
00:51:08.079 --> 00:51:11.159
till two pm. So if you're in Weird and your
842
00:51:11.199 --> 00:51:14.840
power goes out, now you know why. So coming up,
843
00:51:14.880 --> 00:51:18.159

844
00:51:18.719 --> 00:51:22.360
and that'll be coming up. And just wanted to let
845
00:51:22.400 --> 00:51:26.239
a few things. The Pittsburgh Penguins Tonight, they're back on

848
00:51:33.039 --> 00:51:35.559
a big victory over the Canucks, and don't forget. You
849
00:51:35.559 --> 00:51:39.360

852
00:51:46.159 --> 00:52:14.119
Daddy Experience with Sam and Otis News Radio eleven seventy, WWVA.
853
00:52:03.480 --> 00:52:06.920
News Radio eleven seventy, It's the bloom Daddy Experience. Welcome
854
00:52:06.960 --> 00:52:10.159
back to the Bloomdaddy Show. Continuing my conversation with Bob Woodson,
855
00:52:10.199 --> 00:52:14.199
civil rights icon, community development leader, author, founder president of
856
00:52:14.239 --> 00:52:18.559
the Woodson Center, also launched the seventeen seventy six Units
857
00:52:18.639 --> 00:52:21.480
campaign to counter the sixteen nineteen Project.
858
00:52:21.519 --> 00:52:23.119
Before I get to that, I want to ask you.
859
00:52:23.360 --> 00:52:24.440
I've always talked.
860
00:52:24.280 --> 00:52:26.320
About how the Republican Party needs to do a better
861
00:52:26.440 --> 00:52:29.679
job of reaching out to the black voter, especially the
862
00:52:29.760 --> 00:52:32.639
young black voter. So with that in mind, from a
863
00:52:32.679 --> 00:52:36.960
conservative leaning perspective, Bob, what should Republicans and conservatives be
864
00:52:37.000 --> 00:52:41.039
doing differently to engage with Black American urban communities.
865
00:52:42.039 --> 00:52:42.800
Republicans have.
866
00:52:43.159 --> 00:52:47.440
Bill Bennett years ago said that when Democrats see blacks
867
00:52:47.480 --> 00:52:50.800
and poor people, they see a see of victims and
868
00:52:50.880 --> 00:52:55.360
conservativecy aliens.
869
00:52:55.000 --> 00:52:58.159
That's one way of looking at I mean, I think.
870
00:52:58.000 --> 00:53:01.960
What they got to understand that conservative have proprietary and
871
00:53:01.960 --> 00:53:06.639
strategic interests that are compatible with low income black communities.
872
00:53:07.440 --> 00:53:12.199
Conservatives don't profit from the existence of poverty, and so
873
00:53:12.480 --> 00:53:16.440
they should do. There was a Republican Dick Reardon in
874
00:53:16.559 --> 00:53:20.519
nineteen ninety at Los Angeles. He took some of his
875
00:53:20.639 --> 00:53:24.079
friends into East LA and listened to low income and
876
00:53:24.119 --> 00:53:27.880
built the Reardon Center. And he was the first Republican
877
00:53:28.000 --> 00:53:31.880
to win the mayor's race in thirty five years because
878
00:53:31.920 --> 00:53:35.559
he understood if you plant charitably, you can harvest politically,
879
00:53:35.920 --> 00:53:38.000
but you don't harvest a plant in the same year.
880
00:53:39.800 --> 00:53:42.599
So and he won by sixty percent of all the
881
00:53:42.639 --> 00:53:48.199
demographics because Dick Reardon came in and really included the
882
00:53:48.320 --> 00:53:52.599
people suffering the problem in their own rebirth and redemption.
883
00:53:53.559 --> 00:53:59.639
That's what Republican Steve Goldsmith a few years after in Milwaukee,
884
00:54:00.280 --> 00:54:03.960
I mean Indianapolis, Indiana, did the same thing with the
885
00:54:03.960 --> 00:54:04.920
same results.
886
00:54:05.519 --> 00:54:08.079
I want to ask you. You mentioned culture earlier in
887
00:54:08.119 --> 00:54:12.039
this conversation. The culture conversation, it's often kind of kicked
888
00:54:12.079 --> 00:54:14.760
to the curb and we talk about systemic or structural
889
00:54:14.840 --> 00:54:18.239
change you speak about you spoke about it earlier, family, faith,
890
00:54:18.320 --> 00:54:22.599
personal responsibility, local institutions. In your estimations, how much of
891
00:54:22.639 --> 00:54:27.440
the solution lies in changing culture versus changing let's say policy.
892
00:54:27.679 --> 00:54:30.159
Culture's everything I think it was.
893
00:54:30.159 --> 00:54:36.480
Samuel Adams said that democracy and capitalism are but empty
894
00:54:36.559 --> 00:54:39.239
vessels into which we pour our values as a country,
895
00:54:40.800 --> 00:54:44.199
and that is true with culture. The greatest crisis facing
896
00:54:44.239 --> 00:54:48.400
America today is not racial. It is a moral and
897
00:54:48.440 --> 00:54:53.440
spiritual freefall that is destroying our children. According to Harvard study,
898
00:54:53.480 --> 00:54:56.960
the leading cause of death of Appalachia and whiteses is
899
00:54:57.000 --> 00:55:03.400
prescription drugs homicide. For blacks in Silicon Valley, it is suicide.
900
00:55:03.559 --> 00:55:07.199
The suicide rate among teenagers and Silicon Guy is six
901
00:55:07.280 --> 00:55:12.599
times at national average. But elites keep bombarding our children,
902
00:55:12.719 --> 00:55:16.360
telling them a year after year that they live in
903
00:55:16.400 --> 00:55:19.599
a racist nation, and if you're white, you are an oppressor,
904
00:55:19.639 --> 00:55:20.199
and if you're.
905
00:55:20.079 --> 00:55:21.000
Black, you're a victim.
906
00:55:21.519 --> 00:55:26.079
After a while, these children begin to believe that perhaps
907
00:55:26.880 --> 00:55:31.599
they're unworthy, and so if a person devalues their life,
908
00:55:32.719 --> 00:55:35.119
they would be taking their own or take someone else's.
909
00:55:35.119 --> 00:55:38.360
They're different size of the same coin. And so we
910
00:55:38.480 --> 00:55:42.239
must we must set aside race. We must set aside
911
00:55:42.320 --> 00:55:48.639
our ideological differences and concentrate on the remralization of our
912
00:55:49.400 --> 00:55:50.800
society and our children.
913
00:55:50.960 --> 00:55:53.360
What you just said is very powerful, but it's so true.
914
00:55:53.599 --> 00:55:55.400
I mean, it is so true when you think about it.
915
00:55:55.400 --> 00:55:57.599
And along the same lines, Bob, if you could hand
916
00:55:57.960 --> 00:56:03.000
every young person in a struggling neighborhood one piece of advice,
917
00:56:03.039 --> 00:56:03.639
what would it be.
918
00:56:06.159 --> 00:56:09.519
That you are There are two ways to prevent people
919
00:56:09.559 --> 00:56:11.800
from competing. One is to tell them they don't have
920
00:56:11.840 --> 00:56:16.880
to yep, and the other ones by law. What we
921
00:56:16.960 --> 00:56:19.039
can do is say to every young person that your
922
00:56:19.079 --> 00:56:23.159
destinies is in your own hands, that you can become
923
00:56:23.239 --> 00:56:27.559
agents of your own uplift. But values are caught, they're
924
00:56:27.599 --> 00:56:30.679
not taught. So what we do at the Woodson Center
925
00:56:31.400 --> 00:56:37.440
we recruit people who who have overcome the challenges that
926
00:56:37.519 --> 00:56:39.840
a lot of our young people, and we put them
927
00:56:40.320 --> 00:56:44.000
in proximity to these young people so they can inspire
928
00:56:44.079 --> 00:56:48.880
them to become redeemed. America is a country of second chances.
929
00:56:48.960 --> 00:56:53.360
It is a country of redemption, and we have proven
930
00:56:54.039 --> 00:56:58.679
that children can be rescued from their self doubts if
931
00:56:58.719 --> 00:56:59.880
you expose them to me.
932
00:57:01.519 --> 00:57:04.079
That have moral clarity.
933
00:57:05.519 --> 00:57:08.760
And put them in relationship with them right, they can
934
00:57:08.800 --> 00:57:11.519
guide them to a more fruitful life.
935
00:57:11.599 --> 00:57:14.400
I'm talking to Bob Woodson right now, civil Rights Icon.
936
00:57:15.360 --> 00:57:20.280
Your work with seventeen seventy six Knights, it positions itself
937
00:57:20.480 --> 00:57:23.760
as the opposite of the sixteen nineteen project. Why did
938
00:57:23.840 --> 00:57:28.480
you feel it was so important to start seventeen seventy
939
00:57:28.519 --> 00:57:29.440
six Knights.
940
00:57:29.159 --> 00:57:31.760
Because a friend of mine told me that the current
941
00:57:31.920 --> 00:57:35.079
dialogue that we are facing is being driven by a
942
00:57:35.079 --> 00:57:40.440
group of elite whites, guilty whites who are seeking absolution
943
00:57:41.760 --> 00:57:46.199
from crimes they never committed, and by elite, entitled blacks
944
00:57:46.239 --> 00:57:50.079
who are seeking absolutions i I mean justices they never suffered.
945
00:57:51.559 --> 00:57:53.920
Yeah, that pretty much nails it.
946
00:57:54.599 --> 00:57:59.679
And so what we're trying to do is confront that reality.
947
00:58:00.719 --> 00:58:07.039
And since they were using black journalists to take race
948
00:58:07.880 --> 00:58:11.119
in America's birth defective slavery and use it as a
949
00:58:11.159 --> 00:58:14.599
bludgeon against the country, we felt that the messengers to
950
00:58:14.760 --> 00:58:18.079
counter that must be black. But we didn't want to
951
00:58:18.360 --> 00:58:22.599
engage in any more gladiatorial debate. We wanted to offer
952
00:58:23.000 --> 00:58:29.079
a creative, inspirational narrative. So in our books that sold
953
00:58:29.079 --> 00:58:33.199
out within three weeks. Usually a book of essays don't
954
00:58:33.239 --> 00:58:37.639
sell like that, right, But because we told inspirational stories
955
00:58:38.239 --> 00:58:42.239
about how twenty blacks were born slaves and died millionaires.
956
00:58:43.000 --> 00:58:46.519
And we talked about how the black community in nineteen
957
00:58:46.639 --> 00:58:50.159
thirties to nineteen forty during the depression, had the highest
958
00:58:50.199 --> 00:58:54.559
marriage rate. So we emphasized in our books publication not
959
00:58:54.800 --> 00:58:58.599
how we suffered under the boot of slavery and Jim Crow,
960
00:58:59.119 --> 00:59:02.719
but how we achieved in the face of this opposition.
961
00:59:03.639 --> 00:59:06.440
Last question I have for you looking ahead ten years,
962
00:59:06.480 --> 00:59:11.039
What's one I don't know. Let's just say measurable change
963
00:59:11.840 --> 00:59:15.360
you hope to point to and say we did that.
964
00:59:17.079 --> 00:59:20.599
I we have what we call the violence free zones.
965
00:59:20.960 --> 00:59:25.119
The violence we want to demonstrate that we can go
966
00:59:25.239 --> 00:59:30.679
into a whole neighborhood and transform and redeem it from within.
967
00:59:31.000 --> 00:59:33.039
We have islands of excellence.
968
00:59:33.039 --> 00:59:34.920
I can take you into one of the most violent
969
00:59:35.599 --> 00:59:38.880
areas of Washington, d C. And show you where not
970
00:59:39.000 --> 00:59:42.000
a single act of violence or crime has been committed
971
00:59:42.119 --> 00:59:46.840
in one hundred days through how yeah we can bringing
972
00:59:46.880 --> 00:59:54.000
back bringing back people responsibility, what we call antibodies. That
973
00:59:54.039 --> 00:59:58.760
these grassroots leaders that I serve service antibodies, and the
974
00:59:58.760 --> 01:00:01.239
best way to cure the human is a strength in
975
01:00:01.239 --> 01:00:03.840
its own immune system. So I would like to be
976
01:00:03.920 --> 01:00:07.039
able to have the resources to go into some of
977
01:00:07.039 --> 01:00:10.440
these really troubled neighborhoods and demonstrate it how we can
978
01:00:10.519 --> 01:00:15.840
bring about a reduction and violence, crime and restore civil
979
01:00:16.000 --> 01:00:17.400
order in those communities.
980
01:00:18.199 --> 01:00:21.079
Bob, I'm sure everybody loved listening to you and Lorraine today.
981
01:00:21.079 --> 01:00:23.159
Thanks so much for stopping by my studio. Thank you
982
01:00:23.280 --> 01:00:28.599
been an honor. Bob Woodson, civil rights icon, community development leader, author, founder,
983
01:00:28.639 --> 01:00:31.480
president of the Woodson Center. Much more to come here
984
01:00:31.519 --> 01:00:34.159
on WTAM eleven hundred right after this.
985
01:00:35.480 --> 01:00:40.800
Eight fifty on News Radio eleven seventy Wwva Blundetti experience
986
01:00:40.840 --> 01:00:43.320
with Sam and otis no Sam today. She's a little
987
01:00:43.360 --> 01:00:45.400
under the weather. If you listened to yesterday show, you
988
01:00:45.400 --> 01:00:49.159
would realize that she sent me a text and said,
989
01:00:49.440 --> 01:00:52.440
I am a hundred times worse. I cannot make it
990
01:00:52.480 --> 01:00:56.360
in and she apologized. But we are not alone because
991
01:00:56.360 --> 01:00:59.920
we have the one, the only Kevin Cook from Strawbot
992
01:01:00.119 --> 01:01:08.840
Motive joining us at the moment. Good morning, Kevin, I'm busy.
993
01:01:08.960 --> 01:01:14.519
I have two hats. I'm wearing two hats today. I
994
01:01:14.559 --> 01:01:17.519
do have this for you because you're you're you're in
995
01:01:17.559 --> 01:01:21.039
my age wheelhouse, so to speak. Did you know that
996
01:01:21.159 --> 01:01:25.199
today is National TV talk show host Day and it's
997
01:01:25.239 --> 01:01:28.320
observed annually on Johnny Carson's birthday.
998
01:01:29.159 --> 01:01:30.880
I did not, but I was.
999
01:01:33.840 --> 01:01:34.320
Yeah, he was.
1000
01:01:34.719 --> 01:01:36.800
Oh he was the king of Late Night that he
1001
01:01:37.039 --> 01:01:40.039
he he earned that Moniker. And you know, I was
1002
01:01:40.079 --> 01:01:42.840
in college when David Letterman started to get popular, and
1003
01:01:42.880 --> 01:01:46.719
I can remember my one roommate saying, oh, Johnny Carson sucks.
1004
01:01:46.840 --> 01:01:49.599
David Letterman's where it is now? Blah blah blah. And
1005
01:01:49.760 --> 01:01:52.320
you know, we were in that age group where you know,
1006
01:01:52.480 --> 01:01:57.159
David Dave was appealing to the younger college age kids
1007
01:01:57.159 --> 01:01:59.880
as opposed to John Carson. So I mean I could
1008
01:02:00.000 --> 01:02:01.760
see where people interpreted it that way.
1009
01:02:02.679 --> 01:02:04.199
Yeah, good thing that Carson was.
1010
01:02:04.320 --> 01:02:08.400
Nothing was political, okay, it was just you know, all
1011
01:02:08.440 --> 01:02:11.000
about the gas and he put a lot of effort,
1012
01:02:11.280 --> 01:02:14.960
you know, his knowledge of the Castle Spectact. But he
1013
01:02:15.079 --> 01:02:19.400
was party sharp, smart, is overall very good.
1014
01:02:19.599 --> 01:02:23.599
It was true entertaining absolutely. So you know, Johnny's last
1015
01:02:23.639 --> 01:02:27.800
name was Carson, or we could say cars on sale.
1016
01:02:31.280 --> 01:02:35.639
We're saying, man, wow, yeah, I didn't say it was good.
1017
01:02:35.800 --> 01:02:37.039
I didn't say it was good.
1018
01:02:37.960 --> 01:02:43.320
About I'm headed to Mountain here Honda, as everybody would
1019
01:02:43.320 --> 01:02:45.199
be in you know, one hundred miles in this place
1020
01:02:45.280 --> 01:02:48.280
Auto notes. By now we have you know, Strong Automotive
1021
01:02:48.280 --> 01:02:51.079
Group has number one and number two minor dealers in
1022
01:02:51.119 --> 01:02:54.480
the entire state of Weard. And if we sell more
1023
01:02:54.519 --> 01:02:59.320
Honda than anyone right now, we have the absolutely phenomenal selection.
1024
01:03:00.119 --> 01:03:00.280
Uh.
1025
01:03:00.320 --> 01:03:03.519
If you're much civics, h all do it for the
1026
01:03:03.599 --> 01:03:06.559
number one fairly vehicle in the Ohio Valley.
1027
01:03:06.639 --> 01:03:08.760
It is the c r V. Uh.
1028
01:03:09.320 --> 01:03:12.880
Those things are just a change. I mean we see
1029
01:03:13.000 --> 01:03:18.239
them now very consistently with two hundred thousand plus miles
1030
01:03:18.960 --> 01:03:21.360
and I actually tell me that day that I want
1031
01:03:21.400 --> 01:03:24.000
to trade it. But it doesn't make any sense to
1032
01:03:24.400 --> 01:03:26.440
the thing that simply will not quit.
1033
01:03:27.280 --> 01:03:27.440
Uh.
1034
01:03:28.039 --> 01:03:30.760
I mean it's they're just spectacle with its coil as
1035
01:03:30.800 --> 01:03:35.000
passports bridge lads, they're great incentence on all of them
1036
01:03:35.079 --> 01:03:37.960
right now. Uh. We aredineering at the end of the
1037
01:03:38.079 --> 01:03:40.719
mund and you know everybody noticed this last week, these
1038
01:03:40.800 --> 01:03:43.840
last few days, they had a bunch of sales managers
1039
01:03:43.840 --> 01:03:45.360
that are trying to hit their numbers.
1040
01:03:45.840 --> 01:03:46.000
Uh.
1041
01:03:46.119 --> 01:03:48.960
The manufacturers have put a lot of fracture orders, you know,
1042
01:03:49.159 --> 01:03:52.159
to be dominant in the market. And with the incentives
1043
01:03:52.199 --> 01:03:54.920
out there, do that. Uh, and we put the money
1044
01:03:54.960 --> 01:03:55.880
in the trade.
1045
01:03:55.840 --> 01:03:58.880
And making it happen, you do, I mean it makes
1046
01:03:58.960 --> 01:04:00.840
you guys, do make it happen. And I can attest
1047
01:04:00.880 --> 01:04:01.159
to that.
1048
01:04:01.920 --> 01:04:05.039
Yeah, And that's the fact. We'll Stuart as well, Jerry.
1049
01:04:05.440 --> 01:04:09.119
They carry ever Drives, the only odd dealer in the
1050
01:04:09.280 --> 01:04:12.880
entire state of Westerginia that has lifetime protection. They had
1051
01:04:12.960 --> 01:04:13.599
to ever Drive.
1052
01:04:14.039 --> 01:04:15.360
It covers these vehicles.
1053
01:04:15.800 --> 01:04:18.679
You know, get your transmission drive right and something happens
1054
01:04:18.679 --> 01:04:22.480
if stam, I get a back your quick as possible.
1055
01:04:23.320 --> 01:04:24.880
Again, I know that for a fact.
1056
01:04:25.719 --> 01:04:25.920
Yep.
1057
01:04:26.440 --> 01:04:29.039
All right, Well we'll try to do better with this
1058
01:04:29.159 --> 01:04:30.079
joke today.
1059
01:04:30.159 --> 01:04:32.079
Okay, Wow, well listen, hold on, I want you to
1060
01:04:32.159 --> 01:04:35.599
be on the defensive today. All right, you have to
1061
01:04:35.679 --> 01:04:40.119
be on the defensive just in case, because it's National
1062
01:04:40.239 --> 01:04:42.400
slap you're irritating coworker day.
1063
01:04:45.119 --> 01:04:46.679
I will try to be careful all day.
1064
01:04:47.760 --> 01:04:51.920
You never know where it's gonna come from never irritated.
1065
01:04:52.000 --> 01:04:52.559
And I'm glad.
1066
01:04:52.639 --> 01:04:54.920
I am glad Sam isn't here because I'd probably get
1067
01:04:54.960 --> 01:05:01.000
slapped more than once. All Right, man, we'll talk tomorrow.
1068
01:05:02.360 --> 01:05:04.760
All right, we'll see you. As we said, it is
1069
01:05:04.880 --> 01:05:09.000
National TV Talk Show Host Day, and you know we
1070
01:05:09.079 --> 01:05:11.719
were talking about Johnny Carson, and it is observed annually
1071
01:05:11.840 --> 01:05:14.760
on his birthday. He was the king of late night television,
1072
01:05:14.800 --> 01:05:18.400
hosted NBC's The Tonight Show for thirty years prior to
1073
01:05:18.559 --> 01:05:20.599
his death in two thousand and five at the age
1074
01:05:20.679 --> 01:05:24.239
of seventy nine. It's also National Boston Cream Pie Day.
1075
01:05:24.320 --> 01:05:28.480
It's iPod Day. Some celebrity birthdays today. Weird Al Yankovic.
1076
01:05:30.719 --> 01:05:33.119
I don't know if that's a celebrity or not. Dwight
1077
01:05:33.239 --> 01:05:36.360
yoakum And has been here several times. One of my
1078
01:05:36.440 --> 01:05:43.400
favorites to go see Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool, Oh the body
1079
01:05:43.559 --> 01:05:46.440
what is it? The Bodyguard's Bodyguard or something like that
1080
01:05:46.719 --> 01:05:49.719
with Samuel L. Jackson, Great move, two movies, very good
1081
01:05:49.840 --> 01:05:54.800
and retired Football Star. That's what it says. I didn't
1082
01:05:54.800 --> 01:05:59.800
say that. Doug Flutie is sixty three today. So those
1083
01:05:59.800 --> 01:06:02.039
are couple of the things that are going on Today again,
1084
01:06:03.039 --> 01:06:06.159
Sam and otis on the Blue Daddy Experience. Sam unfortunately
1085
01:06:06.280 --> 01:06:09.400
a little bit under the weather. The Chargers host the
1086
01:06:09.480 --> 01:06:13.679
Vikings tonight to kick off Week eight of the NFL season. Elsewhere,
1087
01:06:13.760 --> 01:06:16.400
the Steelers host Jordan Love and the Packers on Sunday
1088
01:06:16.480 --> 01:06:19.440
Night Football. Pittsburgh is coming off at disappointing loss to
1089
01:06:19.480 --> 01:06:22.360
the Bengals, but still leads the AFC North at four
1090
01:06:22.440 --> 01:06:25.400
and two. Meanwhile, a future Hall of Fame quarterback has
1091
01:06:25.440 --> 01:06:29.199
been thinking about revenge. Steelers gunslinger Aaron Rodgers told the
1092
01:06:29.320 --> 01:06:32.880
media yesterday he has no animosity towards the Packers and
1093
01:06:33.000 --> 01:06:35.000
this is the first time the forty one year old
1094
01:06:35.360 --> 01:06:39.440
will play his former team. And don't forget Penguins tonight
1095
01:06:39.519 --> 01:06:42.360
on the ice from Florida taking on the Panthers. They're
1096
01:06:42.400 --> 01:06:45.159
on a three game winning streak. If you can't catch
1097
01:06:45.159 --> 01:06:47.440
it on the two, it is on our sister station
1098
01:06:47.639 --> 01:06:50.400
Eagle one oh seven to five Tonight's game and of
1099
01:06:50.480 --> 01:06:54.519
course all Penguins games. Tomorrow nights starts the World Series.
1100
01:06:54.599 --> 01:06:58.000
The Fall Classic is almost here. The defending champs Dodgers
1101
01:06:58.039 --> 01:07:01.679
battle the Blue Jays in Game one Toronto, La, going
1102
01:07:01.800 --> 01:07:04.519
for their third title in six years after dominating the
1103
01:07:04.559 --> 01:07:07.239
Brewers in a sweep of the NLCS to advance. On
1104
01:07:07.360 --> 01:07:10.199
the other side, Toronto is playing for its first World
1105
01:07:10.280 --> 01:07:13.039
Series in more than three decades after it celebrated back
1106
01:07:13.079 --> 01:07:17.000
to back championships in ninety two and ninety three. The
1107
01:07:17.119 --> 01:07:19.880
Jays fought back from a three to two ALCS deficit
1108
01:07:20.559 --> 01:07:24.000
to sink the Mariners and secure the American League pennant
1109
01:07:24.440 --> 01:07:27.960
former pirate Blake Snell taking the mound for the Dodgers,
1110
01:07:28.840 --> 01:07:33.760
and actually two former pirates scheduled to take the mound
1111
01:07:33.880 --> 01:07:37.679
for the Dodgers during the series. Blake Snell in Game one,
1112
01:07:38.280 --> 01:07:42.440
Tyler Glass now I believe in Game three so, and
1113
01:07:42.519 --> 01:07:46.679
then Snell will be back in five and Glass now
1114
01:07:46.760 --> 01:07:51.159
in seven, I believe. Is how it's set up. It's funny,
1115
01:07:51.199 --> 01:07:54.559
you know, we talk about certain things. And if you're
1116
01:07:54.599 --> 01:07:58.159
familiar with Tom Holland, he's the guy that's playing Spider
1117
01:07:58.199 --> 01:08:01.079
Man in the Marvel universe right now. Well, his contract
1118
01:08:01.159 --> 01:08:07.559
with Marvel reportedly prevents him from pursuing the role as
1119
01:08:07.800 --> 01:08:10.639
James Bond, and that's according to the Sun. The agreement
1120
01:08:10.760 --> 01:08:13.800
blocks Holland from taking any other parts that will overshadow
1121
01:08:14.119 --> 01:08:18.840
that one meaning you know either one, effectively ruling out
1122
01:08:18.880 --> 01:08:22.239
the Double seven franchise. A source told the publication Tom
1123
01:08:22.319 --> 01:08:26.560
can't play two superheroes. It just won't happen. Holland previously
1124
01:08:26.680 --> 01:08:29.720
called Bond the pinnacle of working in our industry, but
1125
01:08:29.880 --> 01:08:34.039
joins actors like Tarren Edgerton and Glenn Powell who have
1126
01:08:34.159 --> 01:08:37.960
stepped back from consideration. The search continues for Daniel Craig's
1127
01:08:37.960 --> 01:08:41.359
replacement following twenty twenty one's No Time to Die, and
1128
01:08:41.600 --> 01:08:44.479
Amazon seeks it. Because Amazon owns the franchise now, they
1129
01:08:44.520 --> 01:08:47.039
seek a fresh face actor in his late twenties or
1130
01:08:47.079 --> 01:08:51.239
early thirties. Scott Rose Marsha, relatively unknown actor, reportedly screen
1131
01:08:51.359 --> 01:08:54.680
tested in June using scenes from GoldenEye and was told
1132
01:08:55.199 --> 01:08:59.239
don't impersonate a previous Bond. So there you have it.
1133
01:08:59.319 --> 01:09:00.239
Tom Holland out.
1134
01:09:00.760 --> 01:09:02.399
Although I don't I don't know how Tom.
1135
01:09:02.319 --> 01:09:05.319
Holland could be James Bond. I he's not really British,
1136
01:09:05.960 --> 01:09:06.079
is he?
1137
01:09:06.279 --> 01:09:06.600
I don't know.
1138
01:09:07.600 --> 01:09:10.720
I guess that's something I have to look up anyway.
1139
01:09:10.880 --> 01:09:14.359
Thanks for joining us age fifty eight. Hopefully Sam will
1140
01:09:14.399 --> 01:09:16.880
be back tomorrow, but if not, The Blue Daddy experience
1141
01:09:16.920 --> 01:09:19.239
with Sam and notice will go on and we will
1142
01:09:19.319 --> 01:09:20.000
see you tomorrow.
