The Government Service Trump Killed May Return as a Campaign Prop
A Reinvention of the Recently Destroyed
The Trump administration is quietly developing America.gov, an AI-driven portal that could offer passport renewals, tax filing, and other federal services. Among the options reportedly under consideration is a replacement for Direct File—the popular free tax-filing program the administration itself eliminated last year.
That is not innovation. It is political laundering: destroy a functioning public service, rebuild some altered version under new management, and present the restoration as an achievement.

The Decision-Makers Are Not a Mystery
Donald Trump’s administration killed Direct File. According to the reporting, Elon Musk also played a role in its destruction. Now Joe Gebbia, an Airbnb co-founder and former Department of Government Efficiency official, is leading the new project through the White House’s National Design Studio. Former DOGE operative Edward Coristine is also involved.
These are not powerless technicians cleaning up an inherited mess. They are members and alumni of the governing operation that created the mess. The administration holds the institutional authority, chose demolition, and now controls any reconstruction.
“Competence” Is the Convenient Distraction
The article frames America.gov as a possible competence scandal: perhaps the launch will go badly and embarrass Republicans before the midterms. That framing is too forgiving.
The central scandal is not that Trump officials might fail to reproduce a service they dismantled. It is that they destroyed an existing program and may now use its partial resurrection as an electoral selling point. Calling this a test of competence converts an identifiable sequence of political decisions into a neutral question of execution.
A smooth launch would not erase the original sabotage. It would merely make the repackaging more effective.
Public Infrastructure as Campaign Merchandise
Officials reportedly hope America.gov can help Republicans in the midterm elections. That detail exposes the project’s governing logic: federal services are being treated not as durable public infrastructure, but as branded political merchandise.
Direct File belonged to the public. Its value came from letting people file taxes without paying private intermediaries. Killing it stripped away that benefit. Reviving it inside a Trump-branded initiative would allow the administration to claim credit for returning something it deliberately removed.
The public pays twice: first through the loss of a working service, then through the cost and uncertainty of rebuilding it.
DOGE’s Revolving Door of Authority
The involvement of former DOGE personnel also reveals how little “former” can mean inside this administration. Gebbia now commands an official White House design operation. Coristine is reportedly participating in a multi-agency initiative. DOGE’s personnel and governing instincts have not vanished; they have migrated into new institutional containers.
At the time of the source report, the administration had not publicly confirmed the project and officials reportedly targeted a September launch. That secrecy limits scrutiny while political appointees shape services involving sensitive interactions with the federal government. An “AI-driven” label does not answer basic questions about accountability, privacy, reliability, or who benefits from replacing established systems.
Destruction Creates Its Own Publicity Opportunity
This is a recurring pattern of reactionary government: discredit public capacity, dismantle it, then selectively restore its most popular functions under loyalist control. The resulting dysfunction is blamed on bureaucracy; the repair is credited to the people who caused it.
America.gov may eventually work, falter, or never launch. The deeper political fact is already visible. The Trump administration converted a functioning public benefit into rubble, and that rubble has become raw material for its next campaign advertisement.
