00:00:01
Speaker 1: Want to talk, that's all.
00:00:05
Speaker 2: How's it going everybody, Welcome back, Welcome back TK.
00:00:10
Speaker 3: How you doing. My friend out there in La doing okay?
00:00:16
Speaker 4: I got I find myself almost confused. I see you got the tape on the logo, rightfully so. But they won tonight, so I'm happy about that.
00:00:25
Speaker 2: But I'm not taking this hat off for the rest of the season. Man, I'm just this is my new statement. You know that I'm displeased with the state of affairs. Win or lose tonight, still displeased, and we'll do an autopsy on this series a little bit. I wanted to talk a little bit about Anthony Volpi before we get into the game tonight. Volpi bench tonight, Aaron Boone had a chance to say that he would play tomorrow. He declined to do that. Kybiro ended up playing pretty well. He had a sacrifice fly. They brought Vulpi in for defense late in the game, which surprised me. He came in for John Carlos Stanton and then went over to play shortstop.
00:01:04
Speaker 3: Do you think that this is the beginning?
00:01:06
Speaker 2: Is this gonna be like the night we remember that Sunday night game in late August where it was kind of the beginning of the end of Anthony Volpi with the Yankees.
00:01:15
Speaker 4: I don't think so, but the I forget who was, but they were saying during the broadcast the Aaron Boone question where they're like, is he gonna play next game? And he was kind of like, will see that gives me pause. That's definitely a little bit of a hmmm, I wonder what that means. I don't think this is the beginning of the end, per se. I definitely think he's gonna be, you know, back in the lineup at some point. Maybe they're sort of looking at it where they're gonna give him a little bit of a break, because if you look at the stats, actually, whenever he's had a bit of a break, whether that's a physical or a mental break, he's actually come back and played pretty well. So maybe they're sort of looking for like a reset. But dude, I mean, this is the time of the year where it's like, you can't care about hurting people's feelings. Man, you gotta win games. David Cohne talking about that during the broadcast as well. So I don't know about the beginning of the end, but maybe the first crack in the armor is what I'll say.
00:02:12
Speaker 2: It was an opportunity to provide a vote of confidence for the young man, and he didn't do it. He declined to do it. So I'm thinking that they're starting to recognize that, hey, I mean, this guy is like dead last in ops and average and a number of offensive stats over the last couple of years.
00:02:30
Speaker 3: Let's talk through the game here, that's gonna go.
00:02:32
Speaker 2: Because the Yankees did pick up a win. Dustin May walked the first two hitters of the game, and then the Yankees couldn't score, and I'm thinking, here we go, gonna be another one of those nights. But in the second John Carlos single Jazz hit one into the bleachers two runs shot home run number one hundred for Jazz. He had two home runs in the game. Grisham also hit two home runs and they were both absolute bombs. He's got twenty four home runs now. He had four Ribby's on the night. Yanks got another run on a sackfly by Kyle Arrow. I did not know that we were allowed to score runs without home run, so that was good to see. We saw some good defense from Ryan McMahon tonight over there at third base, still not hitting really as a Yankee. I thought he'd provide more power and maybe it'll come at some point, But I just think it's interesting that he pretty much stopped hitting TK once he came to the Yanks.
00:03:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, they mentioned that on the broadcast as well the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball Booth. But he's played really good defense, which I'm happy to see because that has been Obviously, third base has been a bit of an issue this season. Oswaldo pretty much had the job until he got hurt, and then I think they said that like eight different people have started at third this season between Jazz and it was sort of like a just big black hole. So, yeah, he hasn't hit that well, but I was never expecting him to come over and mash. And you could argue to like, whenever come over from Colorado, you don't really know how that's gonna affect them, just because the air so thin over there and the ball really jumps. But I think I agree with you where I thought that maybe he'd hit a little bit more for power, but he might still kind of be in that sort of adjustment period. But look, as long as he plays great defense, like I can kind of live with it.
00:04:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, we had a decent start from Carlos Rodin, not a great start. I'll talk more about him in a minute when we do the picture Spotlight. But Devin Williams came in with a three run lead. I'm just gonna ask you, honestly, TK, did you did you have any faith at all in him holding a three run lead there? Because my stomach was like oh. It was like, I was like, oh man, it's gonna be bad. I was preparing for pain.
00:04:42
Speaker 4: They yeah, they put him in, and they put in Volpi in the game too, And I literally texted my dad. I said, oh, oh, Volti and Williams in the game. Here we go. I literally wrote that it worked out, but that I had absolutely no confidence. I have noticed something and I'll give a shout out to my dad who kind of made this point. Whatever he like jerks his fastball, you know that he's not going to pitch well because like, as if he can locate the fastball. Usually he pitches pretty well because it's got to like keep guys honest. But every time he jerks it glove side, I've noticed that it's like he'll fall apart.
00:05:16
Speaker 3: He doesn't have Yeah, yeah, he was getting.
00:05:21
Speaker 2: Lots of uh swings and missus tonight. I think, I mean, how many how many have you have? Like three or four cuts and missus? And he had two strikeouts, so you know, getting some sync too. I mean, you'll take it. You'll take scoreless outing, but for sure not a comfortable, comfortable inning. Weaver had three strikeouts tonight. That's good, dove all. He allowed two hits but pitched out of it. I thought the cutter looked nasty tonight. We were talking during the game about how like a project this winter is to teach that kid some control because he's got just filthy stuff, Like he has a chance to be elite if he could figure it out. But Jazz broke it open with his second home run. Yankees avoid the suite, all right, TK. So who you're gonna go with for the belt tonight?
00:06:28
Speaker 3: We went with Uh.
00:06:31
Speaker 4: I believe Aaron Judge is the King of New York and this guy is the Prince of New York. Jazz Chisholm Jr.
00:06:41
Speaker 2: Ninth Belt for Jazz leading the team as we go through the leaderboard, Freedom Rodin in second with nine so two belt lead for Jazz.
00:06:51
Speaker 3: Christam with six.
00:06:52
Speaker 2: He made a bid tonight, Bellinger five, Judge and Rise four and a half, Warren and Stanton with four each, and then three deming Schmidt, Wells to Escara and Yarborough, and then a lot of guys with one, including Oswaldo Cabrera, who I miss dearly man. It's like this team started to go downhill when we lost Oswaldo.
00:07:11
Speaker 1: Dude.
00:07:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, I know that everybody loves him in the clubhouse, so maybe maybe I don't know. I'd energy like there's a little bit of an element missing there. He was always kind of had that high energy, like Smiley kind of guys.
00:07:23
Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, all right, let's talk about Rodin.
00:07:26
Speaker 2: So why is it that our pitchers are having so much difficulty throwing strikes? And I don't want to break this guy's balls too much, because you know, he pitched well enough tonight to get the win, obviously, and he's got a three point twenty four ERA on the year. He is not having a bad year. He's having a solid year. But he's walked five guys in a game multiple times now, including tonight he did allow one hit, and I know people are gonna be like Rob Rob Erro. He pitched great But to me, the walks are becoming a problem for this team, and it's more of the whole staff more so than just rodn I mean, Dovaal has been walking guys, Williams has been walking guys now tonight. Neither one of them walked anybody, but on any given night they could walk the bases loaded. We've had problems with Louis Heel walking guys. I just feel like the way that the Yankees chase the home run and they chase exit velocity, there's kind of a similarity in pitching where they chase velocity, and sometimes that doesn't necessarily maybe pitch shape too, and maybe sometimes you got to pound the strike zone, right, you got to emphasize throwing strikes, throwing good strikes.
00:08:33
Speaker 3: Thoughts on that.
00:08:34
Speaker 4: No, yeah, I agree with you. Five walks is just way too much. He is like a strikeout pitcher. But that affects how deep you can go into a game. Right, You're taxing your bullpen if you're gonna throw more pitches because you're walking more guys and you're getting in yourself into trouble. And I said, the key to Carlos Rdan is always going to be the walks. Because he is a little bit susceptible to the long ball. And when you walk two guys and then you give up a homer, you know, that's a three run shot instead of what could have been I guess a solo shot, and those are kill you. It's always walks will always kill you all the time. I don't really know what it is because it's it's funny because I don't really think it's just one guy. It seems like it's a bit of a team thing. So maybe, as you said, a little bit of the velocity, a little bit of the obsession with that and you know, spin rate and all that, and maybe a little bit less so on taking something off of something to throw a strike. But you know the name of the game is throwing strikes, right, Yeah. I always think of Kyle Hendrix on the Cubs. I mean, he's old now and he's a bit of a watch player. But like in twenty sixteen when they won the World Series, he was only throwing like eighty nine miles an hour, and the guy was super effective.
00:09:40
Speaker 3: But he spotted it. Well.
00:09:42
Speaker 2: You know, seth Luo dominated us a couple of years ago, throwing just nothing but soft stuff. But putting it exactly where he wanted to. Mike Mosino won twenty games in his final year. He was throwing like eighty six eighty seven miles an hour, but he threw it exactly where he wanted. You know, we remember Jimmy Key, who was so vital to that Yankees ninety sixteen. You know, at the end of his career, he was, you know, spotting the baseball very very I mean, I guess he always he was, you know, hitting his spots, but he was at the end of his career there and and and you know, he was pounding the zone. Even though he didn't have much, he would he would hit his spots and he would expand the zone. You know, I just think that throwing strikes is a lost art and is very important for pitchers. But the Yankees, I guess they got a lot of problems to focus on.
00:10:23
Speaker 3: I guess that's just added to the list.
00:10:25
Speaker 2: So last night I had a little bit of a rant, and it's kind of one of those things where I said, I feel like I said everything I had to say this weekend, Right, I've said all I have to say about that, And so I wanted to give TK a chance to get get his words in there on the series. And I know we just won tonight, so I don't want to be two down, but we did just lose three out of four in a vital series. So I wanted to give TK a chance to kind of talk it over with a new segment called the Autopsy.
00:11:00
Speaker 5: Top Seed with.
00:11:09
Speaker 4: Like the Dexter team man. And as you guys see there, this is gonna be kind of the theme of this little autopsy. That's me in two thousand and nine as a nine year old with the World Series trophy. It was in my hometown. My mom took my friend and I to go see it, and I got a picture in front of it. But that's just how long it's been, Derek since we have won the World Series, all right, So I wanted to put that out there. But really my thing is this, all Right, we just lost three out of four in Yankee Stadium to the Boston Red Sox. Then we got the Washington Nationals and the Chicago White Sox, so they're definitely gonna get fat on those teams. And then you got Houston on the road, and then Toronto and then Detroit and then Boston. So really it's kind of like, are they gonna which Yankee team are we gonna see? Because it seems like this team every time they play a big game in a big spot chocolate soft serf in the pants. And some of you may understand that reference, but my dad was telling me the other day. My dad's cousin went to the game Saturday night when it was just an absolute blowout, and he was saying that there were Boston fans in the concourse chanting f the Yankees and let's go Red Sox in Yankee Stadium. That is just absolutely unacceptable. And to me, that goes back to when the Yankees lost the World Series to the Dodgers in Yankee Stadium. They couldn't even win that game that they should have won to at least push the game back to la where if the Dodgers had eventually won, they wanted in Dodgers Stadium, not in Yankee Stadium. That's supposed to be sacred ground. And there I think this just all comes down to some of the things that Derek had highlighted in his rant with this organizational philosophy, with the home runner bust, and that's the best way to win. And it's not to say that home runs are not going to help you win. They are. It's an important facet of the game, and it works over the one hundred and sixty two. But have you noticed, Derek that whenever they put in the new rules with the man for man at second, they're terrible at it because they don't situationally hit. They don't get the guy over, they don't get him over to third with with the now to the outfield or a ground ball to the right side of the infield and then get him in that way. It's just ridiculous. And personally, I'm twenty five years old, so I didn't really get to experience any of the winning other than that picture you guys saw in two thousand and nine. I never saw the nineties dynasty or the Reggie Jackson years or any of that. I just heard about it. And to me, I get kind of irritated because twenty of the twenty seven championships were before free agency, Like most of the championships to me, is just a brand. It's just we're the Yankees. We have twenty seven championships, Like, I don't really believe in those rings. They're just kind of like, Okay, there weren't as many teams. Back then, you didn't really have as many rounds of the playoffs in modern base ball. I'm more so looking at the Astros, the Dodgers, the Rays. You know, teams that year in and year out, even if they have an off year. The Astros have just been competitive for the last basically ten years with different players. They just seem to have something in the water in Houston, and I hate them for it. That just they produce winning and it drives me nuts. And I look at the team like the Rays with a dirt cheap payroll. How are they always kind of in the mix? You look at the Dodgers. The Dodgers is a product of the Tampa Bay Rays with money because basically their GM was from the Rays organization. That's what the Dodgers are. And I see, Frankie baseball Yankees are the Cowboys. Yeah, the New York Yankees are the Dallas Cowboys of Major League Baseball. It is just a fact.
00:14:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, going off.
00:14:51
Speaker 4: Previous success in history, we're the New York Yankees were the interlocking end Why that doesn't mean anything to me anymore. Man, just not winning and in order to keep that mystique, that sort of aura and Yankee Stadium. It is just not there. Teams don't care that it's the Yankees anymore.
00:15:12
Speaker 3: I I at this.
00:15:12
Speaker 4: Point, let's sell the naming rights to the Yankee Stadium. Let's make it Amazon Stadium. It's it's put the ad on the jersey like just these little things. Man, it's just not the same. They're not the New York Yankees. They're everybody else and we and I'm not asking them to win a World Series every season. I'm just asking them to play good baseball and be competitive and care and have some of that fire and get pissed off when they lose. That's what I'm asking for.
00:15:41
Speaker 3: Derek, Well, tkaction. I think we should.
00:15:45
Speaker 2: We should get to some fan reactions here because I think a lot of people are agreeing with you.
00:15:50
Speaker 3: Right now.
00:15:51
Speaker 2: We got to call about our shortstop situation.
00:15:53
Speaker 6: Hey, Derek John from Hawaii, how beautiful is it to see the baseball be thrown directly from the short stop up directly into the first baseman's mit, Oh my god, what a luxury. It's almost like we've been missing this all year. Let's go Yanks. Let's go call Aero. Sorry, Volpi.
00:16:13
Speaker 2: And Volpe did come in for defensive purposes. Later on, I thought that was interesting. Here's a call about Judge.
00:16:19
Speaker 6: Hike Doug. This is eight and from Long Island. I just want to say, Aaron, Judge, man, he's had a horrible series, Like we need him to step up, and he struck out three times this game. He's struck out against Bueller.
00:16:31
Speaker 5: It's ridiculous the guy.
00:16:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, so he started out two tigns, but he did have a bad series. You brought up that he's hit two hundred since the All Star break. He's playing hurt obviously, I mean it's obvious. I mean he's you go back and watch his bats early on in the in the season versus now, Uh, you know, maybe he needs to get back with the swing man, figure things out with swingman.
00:16:52
Speaker 3: Call here back.
00:16:53
Speaker 5: Wanted to get your take on this moving forward throughout the remainder of this season. Should Jose Caballero be the shortstop and just have have Vault be on as pinch running and you know, maybe if there's a tough left he get him a start at second base here and there. Honestly, I know they might.
00:17:13
Speaker 2: Know, so I don't think that they're gonna play him at second base because he's never played second base, and I can't see him pinch running for Caby Arrow, but I could see him pinch running for Stanton, you know, I could see him coming in late in the game for that. But I'm all in favor of giving Caby Arrow more playing time. To me, he seems like exactly the type of baseball player that the Yankees need.
00:17:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, he's been really good since the deadline. Is a very low key, great acquisition at the deadline. He has a little bit of that edge. He's an irritant Boone was saying before he was a Yankee, he hated him and now he loves him. So I really like the element that he kind of brings to the game. Is he gonna like wow you on the stat sheet? No, probably not. But I think he has a little bit of that intangibleness to him. You know, I think that it's definitely on the table that he should get some time like tonight at shortstop. I don't know what they're gonna do with any volvi, if he's gonna get another you know, thirty starts at short whatever, But uh, I definitely like Caballero in the lineup. He has a little bit of that. He has a bit of that. You know, he has a bit of that Josh Donaldson annoyance, but like not as a player, but like that you that he annoys you, you know what I mean?
00:18:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I agree on her percent. Here here's a call here also mo about cabal.
00:18:26
Speaker 7: Derek, what's some man, it's small notice something we don't always have to hear for the home run ball. You know, they could put the bottle of slavans there's a runner off third or whatever. But look, Cabalo a shortstop, really surprised you, and I love that he has worked up fucking Dia say, hold, I don't care what you do with give rid of him, but don't give him out of that. But in that situation where there's a runner off first and third, Bothy either strikes out or is there grumble that's a double.
00:19:01
Speaker 3: Boy one hundred percent and he pops out a lot.
00:19:04
Speaker 2: I mean, I've seen Caballero make the correct baseball play a number of times here, whether it's getting a you know, productive out like tonight, or you know, taking the wide open right side for a base hit. He runs a base as well. Uh yeah, I'm in favor of giving him more playing time. Quick words from our sponsor tonight the guys who were at Foul Territory talking Arena Club, and then we'll be back here to wrap it up with tk.
00:19:27
Speaker 8: Okay Kratz. I opened up Arena Club, put my own money in there, and I wasn't gonna go big. I know we went over the Ruby pack a week ago. This time I just went for the low level pack where it's an easy entry point. Twenty five bucks. You can get yourself a big Boy card. The Grail has many good options. I slice open the pack. We're looking at it if you're watching us right now, and I pull a card from the nineteen fifties, super cool. I enjoyed the experience looking at it. It's Jim Gilliam, It's the top set from the mid fifties.
00:19:58
Speaker 4: It's cool.
00:19:58
Speaker 8: It's a Brooklyn Dodger. But it's worth more than the card. Like I said, I'm gonna sell it back. I got twenty eight bucks instantly, so I can buy another one of those packs and try and get.
00:20:08
Speaker 4: What I want.
00:20:09
Speaker 1: Absolutely the excitement I heard Kip say before, the excitement's in the chase. You sold it back, now you get to open another one. I enjoy when you slide it across the screen there and the pack opens.
00:20:21
Speaker 4: You know where to go.
00:20:21
Speaker 8: Arenaclub dot com slash foul twenty percent off your first lab packer card purchase, get after it.
00:20:29
Speaker 2: Well, we got some bad news, folks. Apparently the squirrel has died. Uh, the squirrel that made its rounds the other night has has left us. Unfortunately TK at least he doesn't have to watch the rest of the season. So how are we feeling about about things here? We got, like you said, white Sox coming up, We've got no Nationals and then and then White Sox. I feel like if the Yankees don't go seven and oh, I mean, even if they do go seven and oh, doesn't change them as a team, but like they pretty much gotta go seven and oh to like, you know, even have a chance at the division. There's still six games back in the division, I mean wild card. They'll probably get there because they play some Tomato cans here down the stretch. But you know, I just wouldn't be satisfied with a wild card. It's just no fun. But either way, I just I can't see this team going very far in the playoffs.
00:21:30
Speaker 4: No, I mean, look, they'll probably make the wild card. Whether that's the third wild card or the first wild card, I don't know, but I think they'll probably make the wild card. I think they'll get I think the furthest this team will go as the Alds. I don't think they're gonna beat Detroit. I don't think they'll beat Houston. I don't think they'll beat Toronto. I don't think they'll be I don't think they'd beat Seattle. You know, bought like, because all those teams have pitching, and time and time again we've seen when this team faces good pitching and lead pitching, what you do in the playoffs, they don't show up, just simple as that. So I don't know, man, it's just like there's something in the formula here that's just wrong. It's just off. You know. They they they're not gonna they won't make the adjustment. They're still going trying to go deep, which is how they won tonight. They hit the home run. That's great, but I just don't think that, you know, they'll really get far in October. It's disappointing. It's it's gonna ye gonna be tough.
00:22:29
Speaker 2: That I I made this comparison probably last year, and it just came to my mind where, you know, it seems like for years the Yankees have been trying to fit like Queen sized solutions over king sized problems. Right when you know, how, you have that sheet and it's just too small for the bed or whatever. You can't get that last corner and it keeps popping off. That's kind of what this team feels like. It just feels like, you know, just just a little bit the wrong size, wrong shape, wrong coaching, wrong everything. But hey, at least we won tonight, ladies and gentlemen. I'll be back tomorrow. We're gonna do a voicemail show before the game around probably four point thirty, so call in with your thoughts and then we'll be back after the game. Yankees taking on the Nationals from the stadium. TK appreciate the autopsy.

Speaker 3: We'll see you next time.
