David died twice after being struck head-on by a four-wheel drive—and exactly ten years later, he was elected as a Member of Parliament.
In this deeply personal podcast conversation, David recounts the cycling accident that left him trapped beneath a vehicle for 50 minutes. His surgeon rated his injuries nine out of ten, with ten representing death. After four and a half months in hospital, he had to learn to walk again and was told he might never walk or ride a bicycle again.
He proved both predictions wrong.
But the physical recovery was only part of his journey. David opens up about PTSD, anxiety and depression—and the question that followed him for a decade: “Why did I survive?”
When he won his parliamentary seat exactly ten years after the accident, he says he finally found his answer and a renewed sense of purpose.
Beyond his remarkable survival story, the conversation explores major political and economic issues affecting South Australia and regional communities, including:
• The divide between metropolitan and regional services
• Government spending and political priorities
• Renewable energy and its impact on rural communities
• Data centres, water consumption and energy demand
• How artificial intelligence is changing political offices
• AI deepfakes, cybersecurity and data sovereignty
• Why people who understand AI could replace those who do not
• One Nation’s growing support among working-class voters
• Trust, honesty and accountability in politics
• The difference between opposition and governing
• Freedom of speech and the right to cause offence
• The Victorian election and the possibility of a coalition government
• Advice for young people who want to enter politics
This is a conversation about survival, faith, depression, resilience, political change and discovering a purpose greater than yourself.
