What does it take to keep creating when the industry changes, opportunities disappear, and the rules are constantly being rewritten?
Michael Mandaville is a writer, filmmaker, producer, entrepreneur, and storyteller whose career has taken him from major Hollywood productions to independent filmmaking, bestselling novels, screenwriting, and digital entrepreneurship.
A USC graduate with a Master’s in Professional Writing and a BA in Philosophy from UC Santa Barbara, Michael has spent more than 25 years working across the film industry as a producer, line producer, and unit production manager. His credits include the Taken series with Liam Neeson and Luc Besson, American History X, Havoc with Anne Hathaway, Above Suspicion, and numerous other film and television productions.
But Michael’s story isn't just about Hollywood credits.
He's also directed and produced independent films, written screenplays and plays, built businesses around the internet and media, and authored multiple novels—including his Stealing Thunder technothriller series, which won the Thrillspy Award, as well as Murder in the City of Light and Journey So Dreams May Come.
In this episode of CONTROL OR BE CONTROLLED, Darlington and Michael explore what it really means to build a creative life on your own terms.
We talk about the realities of working in Hollywood, the discipline required to keep reinventing yourself, the difference between having a creative dream and actually producing something, and how failure, uncertainty, and changing industries can either control you—or force you to become more adaptable.
Michael also shares stories from behind the scenes of major productions, his experiences working with people such as Liam Neeson, and how he managed to direct an independent feature film with a budget of only $10,000.
Whether you're an aspiring filmmaker, writer, entrepreneur, or simply someone trying to keep pursuing meaningful work in an unpredictable world, this conversation is a reminder that creativity isn't just inspiration.
It's persistence, adaptability, risk, and the willingness to keep moving when you don't know exactly where the road leads.
