BU BÖLÜM HAKKINDA
Huntington Beach isn't one beach. It's five, and picking the wrong one can quietly wreck an otherwise good day. Lane Stone breaks down all eight-plus miles of coastline — City Beach, Huntington State Beach, Bolsa Chica, Dog Beach, and Sunset Beach — and matches each one to the kind of day you're actually trying to have.
Born-and-raised local, 14 years running a real estate team here, and a strong opinion about which stretch of sand wins for bonfires.
What you'll learn:
- Why Huntington City Beach is the right call for first-timers — pier, Main Street, and Pacific City all within walking distance — and why it's the wrong call if you want quiet
- Where the fire rings actually are: Bolsa Chica's roughly 200 rings vs. the designated rings at Huntington State Beach
- The exact boundaries of Huntington Dog Beach (Golden West to Seapoint), its 5am–10pm hours, and the leash rules that change the moment you hit the sand
- Why dogs are off-limits on Bolsa Chica's sand entirely, and where to go instead
- Sunset Beach's trade-off: one of the widest stretches of sand in Southern California, free parking near Warner, and almost none of the visitor amenities
- The rip current warning near the Santa Ana River jetties that inexperienced surfers keep ignoring
Quick picks inside: best for families, best for bonfires, best for dogs, best for avoiding downtown crowds, best for biking.

00:00:00.560 --> 00:00:05.280
And we're back with another episode of Unlocking Huntington Beach.
00:00:05.360 --> 00:00:05.839
What's going on?
00:00:05.919 --> 00:00:10.080
My name is Lane Stone, and we have another good one for you today.
00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:14.960
And today we're going to be talking about all of the beautiful beaches that Huntington Beach has to offer.
00:00:15.119 --> 00:00:21.280
Now, when most people hear Huntington Beach, they picture one beach, one pier, and one long stretch of sand.
00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:27.839
But Huntington Beach actually has several different beach experiences, and choosing the wrong one can completely change your day.
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:32.640
The best beach for a first-time visitor is not necessarily the best one for families.
00:00:32.799 --> 00:00:35.759
The best place for a bonfire may not be the quietest beach.
00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:41.280
And if you bring your dog to the wrong section of the coastline, your beach day could end before it even begins.
00:00:41.439 --> 00:00:48.960
Today, I'm comparing Huntington City Beach, Huntington State Beach, Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington Dog Beach, and Sunset Beach.
00:00:49.119 --> 00:00:59.359
I'll break down what each beach is best for, what amenities you'll find, the biggest disadvantage of each location, and which beach you should choose based on the kind of day you actually want.
00:00:59.520 --> 00:01:01.439
Welcome back to Unlocking Huntington Beach.
00:01:01.520 --> 00:01:08.799
I'm Lane Stone, born and raised in Huntington, and I've been running a top real estate team right here in beautiful Huntington Beach for more than 14 years.
00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:15.519
And one of the things people learn after spending time here is that our coastline changes dramatically depending on where you stop.
00:01:15.760 --> 00:01:22.480
Huntington Beach has more than eight miles of coastline, stretching from Sunset Beach in the north down to the Santa Ana River near Newport Beach.
00:01:22.560 --> 00:01:32.959
Along the coastline, you have beaches operated by the city of Huntington Beach, beaches operated by California State Parks, and one very popular section specifically known for welcoming dogs.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:36.959
Each one has its own atmosphere, access points, parking system, and rules.
00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:43.280
So instead of declaring that one beach is universally better than all the others, I'm going to help you find the one that fits your day.
00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:54.719
Because the best beach means something very different to somebody looking to surf versus a family with young children, a dog owner, or someone carrying enough bonfire equipment to establish a small coastal settlement.
00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:59.280
Let's begin with the beach most visitors already have in mind, Huntington City Beach.
00:01:59.439 --> 00:02:02.879
This is the central stretch of coastline surrounding the Huntington Beach Pier.
00:02:03.040 --> 00:02:08.639
If it's your first time visiting Surf City and you want the classic Huntington Beach experience, this is where I would start.
00:02:08.800 --> 00:02:15.199
You have the pier directly in front of you, Main Street across Pacific Coast Highway, and Pacific City just south of downtown.
00:02:15.360 --> 00:02:23.039
There are restaurants, shops, bike and surfboard rentals, beach volleyball courts, restrooms, outdoor showers, and access to the paved beach path.
00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:30.560
The pier itself stretches approximately 1,850 feet into the Pacific Ocean and serves as the visual center of the city.
00:02:30.719 --> 00:02:40.800
This is also where many of Huntington Beach's biggest events happen, including surf competitions, volleyball tournaments, the Pacific Air Show, and Fourth of July activities such as the fireworks.
00:02:40.879 --> 00:02:52.319
Choose Huntington City Beach if you want the pier, easy access to downtown, restaurants within walking distance, beach volleyball, surf culture, people watching, and a full beach and city experience.
00:02:52.560 --> 00:02:55.680
This is also a good choice if your group wants different things.
00:02:55.840 --> 00:03:01.599
Some people can spend the day on the sand while others walk the pier, shop downtown, or get something to eat.
00:03:01.759 --> 00:03:05.840
You're not committing everyone to eight uninterrupted hours of sitting beside a cooler.
00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:09.039
The downside is that City Beach is normally the busiest option.
00:03:09.199 --> 00:03:13.919
On summer weekends and event days, the areas closest to the pier can become crowded very quickly.
00:03:14.159 --> 00:03:20.000
Parking can also be more expensive or difficult than it is farther north, especially if you arrive after the morning rush has already started.
00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:25.520
And because this is the center of the action, it may not be the right beach if your goal is complete peace and quiet.
00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:33.360
Next is Huntington State Beach, which begins south of Beach Boulevard and continues for approximately two miles to the Santa Ana River at the Newport Beach boundary.
00:03:33.520 --> 00:03:37.439
This area feels much more like a traditional full-day beach destination.
00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:45.759
It has large parking areas, restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic areas, volleyball and basketball courts, a paved multi-use trail, and designated fire rings.
00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:53.439
There are fewer immediate downtown distractions, which can be an advantage when your goal is simply to claim your part of the sand and stay for several hours.
00:03:53.599 --> 00:04:04.960
Choose Huntington State Beach if you want more room to spread out, a family beach day, fire rings, volleyball, or basketball, easy access from a large parking lot, a picnic, or fewer downtown crowds.
00:04:05.199 --> 00:04:10.080
This is especially useful for groups bringing chairs, umbrellas, food, and beach equipment.
00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:14.400
At City Beach, you may be carrying everything from a downtown garage or a smaller parking area.
00:04:14.560 --> 00:04:17.839
At Huntington State Beach, you can usually park much closer to the beach itself.
00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:23.279
Now, Huntington State Beach allows swimming and surfing, but the ocean conditions should be taken seriously.
00:04:23.439 --> 00:04:28.800
California State Parks warn that strong rip currents and rapidly breaking surf can create dangerous conditions.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:38.560
The southern end near the Santa Ana River jetties can produce powerful surf and shifting sandbars, so inexperienced surfers should not treat every section of this beach as a beginner area.
00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:42.879
Always swim near an active lifeguard tower and ask about conditions before entering the water.
00:04:43.040 --> 00:04:45.519
The biggest disadvantage is the distance from downtown.
00:04:45.680 --> 00:04:51.839
If your group wants to walk to the pier, Main Street, or Pacific City throughout the day, this is not the most convenient option.
00:04:52.079 --> 00:04:58.720
You can bike north using the coastal trail, but walking from the southern sections to the downtown is considerably farther than it looks from the car.
00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:04.240
Huntington State Beach is my pick for families or larger groups planning a traditional all-day beach setup.
00:05:04.319 --> 00:05:11.279
If you have more space, convenient parking areas, and access to firings and recreational facilities without being directly inside the downtown crowd.
00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:15.120
Now travel north from the pier and you'll reach Bolsa Chica State Beach.
00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:19.600
Bolsa Chica extends approximately three miles from Warner Avenue to Seapoint Avenue.
00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:23.360
It has a different personality from both downtown and Huntington State Beach.
00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:29.040
The coastline feels more open, and you are across Pacific Coast Highway from the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.
00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:38.879
You'll find restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic roomadas, volleyball and basketball courts, an educational visitor center, the coastal bike trail, and close to 200 designated firings.
00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:44.800
Bolsa Chica also offers RV camping with approximately 50 campsites for self-contained recreational vehicles.
00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:46.800
Tent camping is not allowed.
00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:59.279
Choose Bolsa Chica State Beach if you want a bonfire, RV camping, surfing, a long bike ride, more distance from downtown, easy access to the Bolsa Chica area, or a calmer and more open beach atmosphere.
00:05:59.439 --> 00:06:01.519
It's particularly strong for bonfires.
00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:10.879
Bolsa Chica offers close to 200 fire rings, generally available on a first-come, first served basis, unless one is included with a reserved picnic area.
00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:13.680
During summer and holiday weekends, you still need to arrive early.
00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:20.240
Fire rings have a curious ability to turn otherwise peaceful adults into competitive land claimants before breakfast.
00:06:20.480 --> 00:06:26.560
Keep in mind dogs are not permitted on the sand or in the water at Bolsa Chica State Beach except for service animals.
00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:30.800
Leash pets are allowed in the parking lots and on the multi-use trail.
00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:35.199
Dog owners who want beach access should continue south to Huntington Dog Beach instead.
00:06:35.279 --> 00:06:42.000
The downside is that Bolsa Chica does not offer the same immediate access to restaurants, shopping, and downtown attractions.
00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:45.600
This is a beach where you choose because you want to be at the beach.
00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:51.920
If someone in your group expects to wander onto Main Street for lunch, they are going to discover that the pier is several miles south.
00:06:52.079 --> 00:07:00.240
Bolsa Chica is one of the best choices for a more relaxed beach day, especially if you want a fire ring, RV camping, or access to the northern coastal trail.
00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:06.160
It is also a strong option for visitors who want to combine the beach with a separate visit to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.
00:07:06.319 --> 00:07:12.079
Just remember that the reserve and State Beach are different destinations on opposite sides of Pacific Coast Highway.
00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:16.160
Next is the beach with the simplest category wind, Huntington Dog Beach.
00:07:16.319 --> 00:07:21.120
Dog Beach is located along Pacific Coast Highway between Golden West Street and Seapoint Avenue.
00:07:21.279 --> 00:07:27.759
It's open daily from 5 in the morning until 10 at night and offers two nearby metered parking areas.
00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:32.560
You'll find restrooms, picnic tables, waste bags, beach access points, and ramps.
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:38.560
Dogs must be leashed while entering and leaving the beach inside the parking areas and on the upper bluff.
00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:42.000
Once you reach the beach sand, the area is leash optional.
00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:47.600
However, the beach is not fenced, so your dog should have reliable recall and remain under control.
00:07:47.920 --> 00:08:01.920
Choose Huntington Dog Beach if you want your dog on the sand, an ocean walk with your pet, socialization with other dogs, pet friendly photographs, a casual beach visit, or to watch dogs experience more happiness in 20 minutes than most humans manage all week.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:06.079
Even visitors without dogs sometimes stop here because it's genuinely entertaining.
00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:11.759
If you go, bring fresh water, a bowl, waste bags, a leash, shade, and a towel.
00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:16.800
Do not allow your dog to drink ocean water and watch for signs of exhaustion or distress.
00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:21.920
Not every dog is naturally comfortable around waves, crowds, or dozens of unfamiliar animals.
00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:29.120
Introduce them to the environment gradually rather than launching them into the Pacific and hoping instinct handles the administrative details.
00:08:29.279 --> 00:08:32.320
The biggest disadvantage is that dog beach can feel unpredictable.
00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:36.240
You have dogs running, playing, barking, and crossing through beach setups.
00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:39.120
Parking also feels quickly during warm weekends.
00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:45.120
It's not the best destination for someone seeking a quiet beach nap or anyone uncomfortable around off-leash dogs.
00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:53.279
If you have a dog that is social, comfortable near water, and responsive to commands, this is one of the best pet-friendly experiences on all of Huntington Beach.
00:08:53.519 --> 00:08:58.000
Now, if you do not have a dog, there are better beaches for a traditional day on the sand.
00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:00.639
At the northern end of Huntington Beach is Sunset Beach.
00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:05.919
Sunset Beach stretches roughly a mile and a half from Warner Avenue north toward Anderson Street.
00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:08.320
It feels noticeably different from the pier area.
00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:15.840
This is a quieter residential beach community with beachfront homes, nearby cafes and restaurants, and one of the widest stretches of sand in Southern California.
00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:22.960
You'll find public restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic areas, and free parking options near Warner Avenue and along parts of Pacific Avenue.
00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:26.799
Sunset Beach is generally open from 5 in the morning until 10 at night.
00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:38.159
Choose Sunset Beach if you want a quieter beach, a residential coastal atmosphere, fewer downtown crowds, a long walk, a peaceful sunset, nearby local cafes, or a slower beach day.
00:09:38.320 --> 00:09:44.639
It is a strong choice for couples, locals, and visitors who have already experienced the pier and want something more relaxed.
00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:50.000
The nearby Sunset Green Belt also adds a community park and walking area just inland from the sand.
00:09:50.159 --> 00:09:55.600
The trade-off is that Sunset Beach has fewer large visitor facilities than City Beach or the State Beaches.
00:09:55.840 --> 00:10:00.960
Parking is more limited and you will not have the same concentration of attractions or organized activities.
00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:07.120
Dogs are also not allowed on the beach and restrictions include alcohol, glass, smoking, and tent camping.
00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:11.200
Sunset Beach is the best choice for visitors who value atmosphere over amenities.
00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:15.120
It feels more like a small beach community and less like a center of a major tourist destination.
00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:16.879
Now let's make the decision simple.
00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:18.320
Here's a quick summary.
00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:21.840
Best beach for the first-time visitors, Huntington City Beach.
00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:26.480
You get the pier, downtown, restaurants, and the most recognizable surf city experience.
00:10:26.720 --> 00:10:28.960
Best for families is the Huntington State Beach.
00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:34.159
There's more room, large parking areas, restrooms, recreation, and plenty of space for a full day setup.
00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:35.679
Best beach for bonfires.
00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:42.399
This one is close, but I would give the advantage to Bolsa Chica State Beach because of the large number of fire rings and picnic options.
00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:45.039
Best beach for dogs, Huntington Dog Beach, obviously.
00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:48.720
Best beach for avoiding downtown crowds, Sunset Beach or Bolsa Chica.
00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:50.960
Choose Sunset for a quieter residential feel.
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:55.679
Choose Bolsa Chica for more facilities, fire rings, and a full state beach experience.
00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:59.039
Best beach for restaurants and activities, Huntington City Beach.
00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:03.440
You're within walking distance of Main Street, Pacific City, and downtown businesses.
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:10.000
Best beach for biking, Bolsa Chica or Huntington State Beach both connect directly to the paved coastal trail.
00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:11.519
Best beach for surfing.
00:11:11.679 --> 00:11:14.639
That depends on your experience level and current ocean conditions.
00:11:14.879 --> 00:11:18.799
Never choose a surf spot solely because someone on the internet labeled it as the best.
00:11:19.039 --> 00:11:23.039
Check the conditions, speak with a lifeguard, and stay within your actual skill level.
00:11:23.200 --> 00:11:27.679
The important thing is not finding the one beach that is supposedly perfect for everyone.
00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:31.519
It's choosing the section of Huntington Beach that matches the day you want to have.
00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:37.919
Before you leave home, check the weather, surf conditions, parking situation, and any major events that could affect access.
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:43.519
Once you arrive, follow posted rules, swim near a lifeguard, and leave the beach cleaner than you found it.
00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:52.559
If you found this guide helpful, subscribe to Unlocking Huntington Beach for local guides, community updates, and everything you need to know about living in or visiting Surf City.
00:11:52.799 --> 00:11:57.039
My name is Lane Stone, and I'll leave you with this like I do each and every week.
00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:01.440
Do good, Huntington Beach deserves it, and I'll see you on the next one.
