Leonardo da Vinci was told exactly the same thing, five hundred years ago, by almost everyone who held power over his life. He was right to ignore them. It simply took the world about five centuries to understand why. Tonight we sit with the many-sided man the world had no place for, and the three quiet taxes it charged him for the crime of being more than one thing.
This is not a lecture and not quite a biography. It is a slow, warm sermon told through the real scenes of his life. The job application where the finest painter alive buried the word painting at the very bottom, under nine kinds of weapon.
The Pope who looked at him and said he would never amount to anything. The giant bronze horse that was melted into cannon. The notebook nobody wanted, cut apart with a knife by a man who thought he was helping. A discovery about the human heart that sat in the dark for four and a half centuries before a laboratory finally caught up to it.
And underneath all of it, a gentle and, I think, hopeful argument. The three things the world charged a mind like his, the not being findable, the not being carried, the years spent buying your own hands, have quietly been cancelled inside your own lifetime.
The age everyone fears, the one that flattens people into single functions, is the age we are leaving, not the one we are entering. Only one price was never repealed. Curiosity has always been work.
So rest here a while, and let the shame of being many-sided fall away. You were not scattered. You were simply born, at last, into a world that has almost run out of reasons to break you.
If a moment in this one lands, leave a comment and tell me the one interest you were told, once, to give up. And if it makes you think of someone who was also told to pick one thing, share it with them. It may be the thing that lets them unfold a little.
Sleep well.
