Iron Monkey (1993)

WEBVTT
00:00.171 --> 00:08.874
[SPEAKER_03]: when Miramax brought this movie to the states, they took some liberties, they don't say.
00:09.675 --> 00:20.739
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to Recotopia, a happy home for recommended movies, TV shows, music, video games, foodstuffs, and more from three people you can definitely trust, trustability varies by region no guarantees implied.
00:35.258 --> 00:38.824
[SPEAKER_03]: And now, here are your hosts, Chris Akinson, Jeremy Scott, and Eron Dicer.
00:50.040 --> 00:54.282
[SPEAKER_04]: and joined by Aaron Dyser, Highly Ho, Yenorino's.
00:55.182 --> 00:56.323
[SPEAKER_04]: That's right, that's right.
00:56.443 --> 01:00.644
[SPEAKER_04]: Today's big recommend is Iron Monkey from 1993.
01:01.145 --> 01:05.767
[SPEAKER_04]: We'd also like to welcome Chat who've come out here to watch us talk about movies on a Tuesday.
01:05.807 --> 01:07.347
[SPEAKER_04]: We appreciate you very much.
01:07.968 --> 01:10.629
[SPEAKER_04]: Let's get on to our small recommends.
01:11.089 --> 01:13.150
[SPEAKER_04]: It's no big deal.
01:13.190 --> 01:14.390
[SPEAKER_04]: It's so small and light.
01:14.510 --> 01:16.811
[SPEAKER_04]: It's small, it's tiny, it's petite, it's weak.
01:17.411 --> 01:18.112
[SPEAKER_04]: Jeremy, what do you got?
01:18.937 --> 01:23.119
[SPEAKER_03]: somewhere in the late Ots late 2000s.
01:23.599 --> 01:28.621
[SPEAKER_03]: I gave up on network television, which is not to say, I thought it was all trash.
01:29.362 --> 01:32.983
[SPEAKER_03]: I just stopped checking those channels when I was watching television.
01:34.444 --> 01:39.326
[SPEAKER_03]: And much more into cable channels, movie channels, etc.
01:39.506 --> 01:43.067
[SPEAKER_03]: And so an entire 22 Emmy winning
01:44.708 --> 01:48.590
[SPEAKER_03]: sitcom went by me, and I never got to see it.
01:48.610 --> 01:49.930
[SPEAKER_03]: That's called Modern Family.
01:49.990 --> 01:51.651
[SPEAKER_03]: It came out in 2009.
01:52.631 --> 02:00.214
[SPEAKER_03]: And Christopher Lloyd, not Doc Brown, Christopher Lloyd, but the Fraser producing Christopher Lloyd is behind this show.
02:01.975 --> 02:05.116
[SPEAKER_03]: And it is delightful.
02:05.176 --> 02:06.817
[SPEAKER_03]: It's using the same kind of
02:07.517 --> 02:16.205
[SPEAKER_03]: Conceite, if you will, that the office does, in that they're filming some sort of documentary, and I'm only through the first season.
02:16.265 --> 02:19.408
[SPEAKER_03]: So it may get explained more in future seasons.
02:19.569 --> 02:19.729
[SPEAKER_03]: But
02:21.186 --> 02:28.892
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not sure any show but arrested development has made me laugh this hard this consistently episode in an episode out.
02:28.992 --> 02:42.181
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if the quality holds up overall 11 seasons, but it's funny with a capital F and in ways most shows wouldn't even bother with like there are throwaway jokes.
02:43.362 --> 03:01.399
[SPEAKER_03]: That kill me this one episode where Tyberall who's one of the main characters is talking to his wife Julie Bowen And they had already had a previous reference to his male cheerleading buddies in college who were who the football guys were so jealous of them They wouldn't let them join the football team
03:02.259 --> 03:08.346
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, and then later she makes a reference to your cheerleader, buddy Len, and, and we're moving on.
03:08.386 --> 03:13.252
[SPEAKER_03]: The show is moving on at this point, and Tyborrell's character says, Hey, Len was smart.
03:13.592 --> 03:14.433
[SPEAKER_03]: He wasn't a nerd.
03:14.613 --> 03:18.237
[SPEAKER_03]: He built his own helicopter, and if he was alive, then we cut to something else.
03:18.798 --> 03:19.379
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, so...
03:20.476 --> 03:30.624
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm rolling at the fact that his buddy Lynn died in his own home, Bill helicopter and the show that to the show, that's just a, if you catch that, you catch it and have fun with it.
03:30.705 --> 03:35.208
[SPEAKER_03]: If not, we've got bigger fish to fry and every episode is full of stuff like that.
03:36.289 --> 03:40.833
[SPEAKER_03]: So again, 90% of you are out there going, we'll dodge, you're in me, yeah.
03:41.033 --> 03:44.776
[SPEAKER_03]: But I'm here to confess that I missed a really good show and
03:46.157 --> 03:50.419
[SPEAKER_03]: I have a feeling this is going to be up there with my very favorites once I'm done.
03:50.999 --> 03:55.901
[SPEAKER_03]: But my wife and I are watching a few episodes every week and just really, really liking it.
03:56.021 --> 03:59.683
[SPEAKER_03]: So if like me, you'd ever been on the fence, take a shot.
03:59.743 --> 04:02.324
[SPEAKER_03]: It's on Hulu and it's freaking funny as balls.
04:03.568 --> 04:11.232
[SPEAKER_04]: I, um, I watched this when it aired, um, uh, probably for four or five seasons.
04:11.312 --> 04:16.914
[SPEAKER_04]: And then at some point, uh, I had, I just decided to drop it from my, my schedule.
04:17.194 --> 04:21.676
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think it was that it just fell off that badly or whatever.
04:21.736 --> 04:26.459
[SPEAKER_04]: But like, uh, it was just, it wasn't, it would part of my plans anymore or whatever.
04:26.519 --> 04:27.119
[SPEAKER_04]: But, uh,
04:27.399 --> 04:29.922
[SPEAKER_04]: I very much enjoyed the first four or five seasons.
04:29.962 --> 04:34.167
[SPEAKER_04]: I can't remember where I stopped, but I really enjoyed it too.
04:34.267 --> 04:42.056
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, and Ty Burrell was basically he had had a huge, he had had a pretty decent career before this, but like this made him a star.
04:42.757 --> 04:51.100
[SPEAKER_03]: And then he just moved his family to like why only he's like left Holly would all together because he was happy and I'm sure making it up money.
04:51.400 --> 04:57.082
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean if you make you making up money on this and then like when it goes into syndication and all that what does he need to do?
04:57.482 --> 04:57.822
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so
04:58.362 --> 04:59.903
[SPEAKER_00]: It is never too late Jeremy.
04:59.943 --> 05:25.372
[SPEAKER_00]: It is never too late to find one of the greatest it comes of all time I've watched every single episode of this as it was airing for every season Because it is so much fun and the mockumentary style makes no sense All the way to the end makes no bit of sense What they're doing following this family for this intense what it allows amount of time to wink at the camera and yeah, of course break the fourth wall
05:26.592 --> 05:51.551
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they're like many salilic weeds and that we're going right like you know in salilic weeds on stage they're not really honestly someone just breaking out of their normal routine to come and yell it yell all their thoughts that's just their inner thoughts and things like that so like you know but yeah there are sometimes especially when you start doing sins type of stuff of this format and everything you're like wait a minute
05:52.323 --> 06:03.753
[SPEAKER_04]: you you were down here and then you decided to take the crew up here to have like your inner thoughts broadcast and then you went back you know and did all this others love but uh yeah anyway.
06:04.233 --> 06:13.721
[SPEAKER_00]: I uh I love Phil the type uh bro and I love the dumpsy family, I love the dumpsy kids um but I think uh Mitchell and Cam
06:14.562 --> 06:19.624
[SPEAKER_00]: are some of the stuff that they do, some of the, the back and forth that they have.
06:19.824 --> 06:22.125
[SPEAKER_00]: They are so perfect in those roles.
06:22.505 --> 06:24.906
[SPEAKER_00]: Eric Stone Street was a revelation to me in this show.
06:24.926 --> 06:26.286
[SPEAKER_00]: He's so good.
06:27.806 --> 06:28.887
[SPEAKER_00]: And really enjoy it.
06:28.927 --> 06:32.028
[SPEAKER_00]: Plus there's, there's an opportunity for others to come play like,
06:33.389 --> 06:37.713
[SPEAKER_00]: you know Adam divine shows up for a couple seasons and he's hilarious there for a long time.
06:38.333 --> 06:51.685
[SPEAKER_00]: Fred Willard, I don't know if he showed up for you yet, Jeremy, but Fred Willard comes on the show for a cup of coffee and has a blast, Steve Zahn, Miraservino, just lots of people dropping by to have fun with his family.
06:51.725 --> 06:52.666
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it's good stuff.
06:53.994 --> 07:11.634
[SPEAKER_04]: Eric Stone Street by the way is the dude in almost famous who when gets the gets the phone call or whatever and and gives it to the kid He's like he's like your mom just called she freaked me out That's Eric Stone Street in an almost famous.
07:11.735 --> 07:12.796
[SPEAKER_00]: I did not know that.
07:13.196 --> 07:14.718
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's good stuff good stuff
07:15.426 --> 07:16.046
[SPEAKER_04]: What do you got, Aaron?
07:17.407 --> 07:18.627
[SPEAKER_00]: New movie called caught stealing.
07:18.647 --> 07:20.368
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the new Aaronowski movie.
07:21.108 --> 07:25.230
[SPEAKER_00]: Darren Aaronowski has always interested me.
07:25.390 --> 07:29.431
[SPEAKER_00]: Even when I'm not high on his films, I find them interesting.
07:29.931 --> 07:32.592
[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes I love them.
07:33.073 --> 07:35.694
[SPEAKER_00]: And we recently did an Aaronowski film on this.
07:36.274 --> 07:37.234
[SPEAKER_00]: Very podcast.
07:37.534 --> 07:38.695
[SPEAKER_00]: But this is different.
07:39.435 --> 07:51.481
[SPEAKER_00]: In my mind, then any movie he's ever done, it feels more like a straight-laced, not straight-laced, but a straightforward, accessible crime action drama.
07:51.741 --> 07:56.924
[SPEAKER_00]: Austin Butler plays the lead, somebody who is really in that,
07:58.925 --> 08:13.639
[SPEAKER_00]: That archetype of like the hitchcock man who gets caught up in things, you know, the innocent man that gets caught up in things beyond their ability plays with themes of regret redemption and how to heal.
08:14.860 --> 08:20.846
[SPEAKER_00]: Through that character, Zoe Kravitz plays his loved interest in the movie, and she is great.
08:21.266 --> 08:32.216
[SPEAKER_00]: Matt Smith plays a neighbor across the street who kind of is a part of what gets them into this mess, and man is Matt Smith taking interesting roles and doing interesting things with him.
08:32.856 --> 08:36.159
[SPEAKER_00]: I am really digging the choices he's making in his career.
08:36.239 --> 08:36.800
[SPEAKER_00]: Bad Bunny?
08:37.100 --> 09:01.164
[SPEAKER_00]: is great in this and I've seen him be funny and great on SNL so that doesn't necessarily surprise me too much, but then you've got Vincent de Nafrio and Leiav Schreiber together as a one-two team of, you know, I'm going to get this wrong, but it's like a, you know, like a a city Jew or there's like a real religious bent to them, but they're also like hardened
09:06.605 --> 09:08.126
[SPEAKER_00]: are so good in this.
09:09.127 --> 09:10.388
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, I loved this movie.
09:10.529 --> 09:12.230
[SPEAKER_00]: I had so much fun.
09:12.250 --> 09:19.477
[SPEAKER_00]: The sounds more like a gyrochie movie, and it is kind of, you know what, it kind of feels like Aaron Opski, you know, doing a gyrochie kind of thing.
09:19.677 --> 09:19.897
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
09:20.457 --> 09:20.738
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
09:20.778 --> 09:21.498
[SPEAKER_03]: I gotta ask you.
09:21.679 --> 09:23.941
[SPEAKER_03]: Did they use the song from Drain's Addiction?
09:24.281 --> 09:25.922
[SPEAKER_03]: Been caught stealing in this movie.
09:26.022 --> 09:26.423
[SPEAKER_03]: Anywhere.
09:26.823 --> 09:28.164
[SPEAKER_03]: Cause if not, it's not.
09:28.224 --> 09:28.705
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not.
09:28.905 --> 09:30.466
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not great at pulling that stuff out.
09:30.546 --> 09:31.748
[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't remember.
09:33.049 --> 09:35.911
[SPEAKER_04]: I would I would I mean I would almost guess not.
09:36.091 --> 09:41.633
[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like Darren Irnosky would that's a little too on the head for him Yeah, I feel like yeah.
09:41.953 --> 09:46.976
[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like you would do that, but that's a pairing right there Vincent de Nafrio and Lea Schreiber I think that's yeah.
09:47.256 --> 09:47.656
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, there
09:48.096 --> 09:49.658
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they are so good to go.
09:49.798 --> 09:50.960
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I highly recommend this.
09:51.020 --> 09:51.781
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of fun.
09:51.801 --> 09:54.504
[SPEAKER_00]: I think you're going to have a good time.
09:55.125 --> 10:02.073
[SPEAKER_00]: And having just recently seen after hours, it's always fun to see Griffin Dunn, older Griffin Dunn, show up and in something and do stuff.
10:02.994 --> 10:04.676
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it's good.
10:04.816 --> 10:05.157
[SPEAKER_00]: Check it out.
10:05.917 --> 10:25.166
[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, I saw trailers for this and I wanted to see it, but I was a little, um, I don't know, I was a little, uh, taking a, again, what the word I'm trying to come up with here, um, I was a shy away from it, basically, by some of the reviews that I'm seeing on it and everything.
10:25.266 --> 10:26.866
[SPEAKER_04]: I, is this being well reviewed.
10:26.886 --> 10:28.327
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you know it seems like it's.
10:28.587 --> 10:29.928
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know honestly.
10:29.948 --> 10:30.829
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd have to look it up.
10:30.909 --> 10:33.030
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I guess I've got it up here.
10:33.050 --> 10:36.092
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I have the rotten tomatoes 84.
10:36.132 --> 10:38.054
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what's 84.
10:38.094 --> 10:38.194
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, 7.39.
10:43.612 --> 10:46.954
[SPEAKER_04]: And the people, what about the people, what are they saying?
10:47.234 --> 10:51.437
[SPEAKER_00]: According to Google users, 92% like to this movie, so.
10:51.897 --> 10:54.719
[SPEAKER_04]: But it's always kills me, man.
10:54.759 --> 11:02.063
[SPEAKER_04]: Some of these movies that have that kind of high rating between everybody, and they end up being like fourth place at the box office and everyone.
11:02.623 --> 11:06.285
[SPEAKER_04]: Jaws over the weekend was like the second place movie.
11:06.766 --> 11:06.966
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
11:07.066 --> 11:08.587
[SPEAKER_04]: We release of Jaws.
11:09.674 --> 11:24.528
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and Netflix throws K-pop demon hunters into theaters for one weekend and then it like comes out number one or whatever You know what I mean like it's just that's how it is I afraid to even go there, man I feel like that's a cultural tipping point for me like I need to accept that I'm old I loved it.
11:24.789 --> 11:27.651
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought I was so good, but you know dang all right
11:30.094 --> 11:34.479
[SPEAKER_04]: My small recommend is a documentary called The Kid Stays in the Picture.
11:34.539 --> 11:39.165
[SPEAKER_04]: It's based on the autobiography by Robert Evans.
11:39.285 --> 11:40.446
[SPEAKER_04]: Producer Robert Evans.
11:41.087 --> 11:42.949
[SPEAKER_04]: I had seen this movie before.
11:42.989 --> 11:45.712
[SPEAKER_04]: I went to a movie night where this was one of the movies.
11:46.613 --> 12:11.427
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, and I've read this book too, uh, very interesting, uh, read and watch if you ever have time to do that, uh, just a little slice of movie history, but Robert Evans was a, uh, want to be actor who had given up on acting and then was discovered by somebody and just waiting around in a pool one day who said you would be a great, uh, you would be a great, uh, uh, uh,
12:11.867 --> 12:26.792
[SPEAKER_04]: actor or a great look for my old husband, Irving Thalberg, the old producer, and so he got two parts in one year basically doing nothing and what wasn't even looking for it.
12:28.333 --> 12:32.374
[SPEAKER_04]: And then he just realized that he didn't really want to do this acting thing.
12:32.434 --> 12:33.715
[SPEAKER_04]: He wanted to be the guy.
12:34.335 --> 12:37.156
[SPEAKER_04]: The reason why this title is the way it is is that
12:37.656 --> 13:01.218
[SPEAKER_04]: He was in some, he was, he was going to act in this one movie and all the actors who were going to act with him didn't want to act with him in the movie and signed this thing saying, this is not going to be a success if Robert Evans is the lead, but then the producer got on set and Robert Evans did a scene in the guy goes, the kid stays in the picture and then and he just left.
13:02.098 --> 13:11.383
[SPEAKER_04]: But he Robert Evans says, you know, after that moment, I realized I wanted to be in the industry, but I wanted to be the guy who says the kid stays in the picture.
13:11.463 --> 13:12.684
[SPEAKER_04]: I want to mean that guy.
13:13.324 --> 13:20.969
[SPEAKER_04]: And so it shows him, it's him narrating, basically his own autobiography through all this thing.
13:21.669 --> 13:44.331
[SPEAKER_04]: now you have to take a lot of things that he says in here with a grain of salt because this is uh a hollywood producer talking about his own life and everything and who knows uh like exactly if all the stuff went down exactly as it did but eventually he gets on to paramount where he is there during the time love story comes out and the godfather comes out and
13:45.451 --> 14:01.701
[SPEAKER_04]: and he's he's become like this big producer and he wants to and he wants to make his own movies because his deal at Paramount doesn't pay him nearly as much as that you know Paramount is getting for all these movies projects that he's he's coming up with and everything but
14:02.401 --> 14:29.025
[SPEAKER_04]: uh... one of the funniest stories in there is about how during the godfather there's a there's a they're gonna see the daily's on this on this movie in frances for copula comes in he they had hired him based off of nothing basically he was the only basically the only Italian american director they knew and that's the reason why they hired him and the movies he had done before this did not show a guy who was capable of making the godfather
14:29.805 --> 14:45.958
[SPEAKER_04]: and and so he had he came in with this movie the original cut of the co-father that they came into watch on the daily was two hours and ten minutes long and that sounds super short doesn't it because yes it is and there's a point where they watch the movie
14:46.518 --> 15:07.885
[SPEAKER_04]: and Robert Evans like his like friends is I need to come sit you need to come to my office and talk to me and he's like the guy waited the guy waited 30 minutes to come to my office and he's like we pulled him off the street and he's given me 30 minutes before he gets into and he's like he's like he's like where the hell is there the rest of the picture you filmed the saga and you gave me a trailer
15:08.465 --> 15:16.833
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's like, it's rare for a producer to actually go to his director and say, hey, could you make this longer?
15:16.853 --> 15:18.394
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
15:18.494 --> 15:22.298
[SPEAKER_04]: And that's apparently one of his contributions to the Godfather.
15:22.641 --> 15:38.826
[SPEAKER_04]: And it also talks a lot about him dating and then marrying Allie McGraw at the time, which was ill-fated because Allie McGraw ended up shooting the getaway with Steve McQueen and Steve McQueen and they had a big huge affair.
15:39.367 --> 15:57.452
[SPEAKER_04]: during all of that, but this is a really good, it's a different kind of documentary, because it's basically just a bunch of pictures and stuff while Robert Evans talks in that voice, that producer, that Hollywood producer voice all the way through it and everything, and he's got some really interesting turns of phrase.
15:58.052 --> 16:09.039
[SPEAKER_04]: in the movie and everything, but it's well worked your time, especially if you want to just learn a few things about movie history, especially during an era where some of the greatest movies were getting made and everything.
16:09.100 --> 16:09.700
[SPEAKER_04]: So there you go.
16:10.161 --> 16:17.205
[SPEAKER_04]: All right, let's get on to our big recommend, and that is Iron Monkey, and it is Jeremy's turn, so Jeremy take it away.
16:17.465 --> 16:18.566
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm fine, I'm fine.
16:18.586 --> 16:20.407
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just that you're so big.
16:20.647 --> 16:21.968
[SPEAKER_04]: It's so huge.
16:22.088 --> 16:24.190
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a good rule, but it's bigger than rules.
16:24.370 --> 16:25.670
[SPEAKER_03]: It's bigger on the inside.
16:25.951 --> 16:26.451
[SPEAKER_01]: Is it?
16:26.591 --> 16:27.211
[SPEAKER_01]: I know this.
16:27.712 --> 16:29.913
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, we're going to start with an asterisk.
16:31.454 --> 16:35.857
[SPEAKER_03]: When when Miriamax brought this movie to the states, they took some liberties.
16:36.417 --> 16:42.560
[SPEAKER_01]: They... No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
16:54.807 --> 16:59.090
[SPEAKER_03]: But that is the version that is most accessible to anyone living in the U.S.
16:59.350 --> 17:04.954
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't own the original foreign English subtitle version.
17:05.895 --> 17:08.057
[SPEAKER_03]: But that is apparently the better version.
17:08.077 --> 17:09.498
[SPEAKER_03]: They also wrote a new score.
17:10.218 --> 17:20.106
[SPEAKER_03]: But the version that was available to you, all of our listeners, the version that I watched, that I'm going to recap now, is the version that Miramax altered when they brought it to the state.
17:20.427 --> 17:20.707
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
17:20.787 --> 17:20.927
[SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
17:20.987 --> 17:32.257
[SPEAKER_03]: So Iron Monkey is a new ping martial arts film set in 1858, and I'm going to stop right there until you, yes, I'm going to butcher a lot of these names, and I'm going to still give it a valiant effort.
17:32.997 --> 17:36.958
[SPEAKER_03]: Where the Chinese countryside is being ravaged by warlords and terrible flooding.
17:37.578 --> 17:49.142
[SPEAKER_03]: The text tells us the cities that therefore became crowded with peasants, who would flood the countryside and they came to the cities looking for food, and the protection provided by the Shaolin monks, martial arts masters.
17:49.262 --> 17:53.523
[SPEAKER_03]: But, instead, they found corrupt leaders and danger around every corner.
17:54.243 --> 17:59.645
[SPEAKER_03]: But in the town of Chikyang, a hero rose to defend the people, the Iron Monkey.
18:00.743 --> 18:05.644
[SPEAKER_03]: We next see the Iron Monkey himself, dressed and masked in an old black hopping across rooftops.
18:06.504 --> 18:15.166
[SPEAKER_03]: Then at the governor's palace, we see four Shaolin monks being brought food by Chief Fox and his men, but they scold him for caring more about food than security.
18:15.726 --> 18:18.226
[SPEAKER_03]: And those are some dedicated monks to turn down free dim sum.
18:18.926 --> 18:27.388
[SPEAKER_03]: And I will pause here to mention that one of my favorite things about this movie is how focused on food it is and not just for food's sake, but it is part of the themes and the plot in many ways.
18:28.388 --> 18:30.550
[SPEAKER_03]: Chef Fox gives the food to the rest of his men.
18:30.710 --> 18:41.480
[SPEAKER_03]: Next, he takes the shark fin soup to the governor's chambers, where the governor is playing a think-hide-and-seek might-be-tag under the covers with some female companions, but he sends the soup away.
18:41.701 --> 18:45.924
[SPEAKER_03]: And that is a dedicated pajama party, however, to be turning down free shark fin soup.
18:46.725 --> 18:59.135
[SPEAKER_03]: Suddenly someone shouts there, and all the men come running in shoot arrows and down a bird, which makes chief fox very happy because foxes like to eat birds, but also because it means his new trap to catch the iron monkey is working.
18:59.876 --> 19:01.938
[SPEAKER_03]: If not even a yummy bird can escape it.
19:02.745 --> 19:08.347
[SPEAKER_03]: but just then the iron monkey appears and picks apart the soldiers until the foreshowling monk show up.
19:08.888 --> 19:09.348
[SPEAKER_03]: Which point?
19:09.648 --> 19:11.209
[SPEAKER_03]: The monkey runs inside the building.
19:11.629 --> 19:13.730
[SPEAKER_03]: The monk's follow, but chief fox thinks it's a trick.
19:14.050 --> 19:19.432
[SPEAKER_03]: And tells his men to hold their ground, but also he doesn't want to go in there because someone will steal his dead bird.
19:21.333 --> 19:23.374
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know why I kept going with that for so long.
19:24.334 --> 19:25.995
[SPEAKER_03]: The monkey is too much for the monks.
19:26.215 --> 19:32.577
[SPEAKER_03]: And as he flits and floats above them, ridiculing them for believing themselves to be righteous, while multi-kicking them in the head.
19:33.197 --> 19:37.239
[SPEAKER_03]: The soldiers finally bust in once the governor gets alarmed about the monkey being in his house.
19:37.279 --> 19:43.581
[SPEAKER_03]: And in one of my favorite moves in the movie, the iron monkey spins on his side on a table to clear a dozen men around him.
19:44.217 --> 19:54.521
[SPEAKER_03]: When the Iron Monkey is then in the middle of the chamber, Chief Fox brings another trap, because Fox is also like to eat monkeys, as rope walls create a makeshift cage, momentarily trapping our hero.
19:55.201 --> 20:05.505
[SPEAKER_03]: But ultimately, he just uses a knife to cut it, and then he Jedi jumps through the goddamn ceiling onto the roof and escapes, not through a pre-existing hole in the ceiling mind you.
20:05.766 --> 20:08.747
[SPEAKER_03]: He creates the hole with the power of his jump.
20:09.467 --> 20:21.093
[SPEAKER_03]: In the aftermath, the governor goes to examine his special trinkets when chief fox interrupts him, and the governor spots what he thinks is remnants of his shark thin soup on the chief's face, and slaps him, and docks his pay in the pay of his men.
20:21.734 --> 20:31.399
[SPEAKER_03]: When a soldier walks in that is suspiciously hiding his face and says that the iron monkey got away, chief fox approaches him, but then it turns out to be the iron monkey.
20:31.599 --> 20:35.541
[SPEAKER_03]: He sweep kicks, chief fox steals the governor's special trinkets and
20:40.198 --> 20:50.323
[SPEAKER_03]: The monkey leaves behind a knife letter, thinking the governor for the donation to the refugees and tells him to open the storehouses and give more food to the peasants, or you'll see more of me.
20:51.084 --> 21:00.689
[SPEAKER_03]: The next day, Chief Fox meets with two shady guys that want to open a brothel and they give a gift for the governor, but Chief Fox doesn't accept it, as he's afraid the iron monkey might steal it.
21:02.392 --> 21:09.737
[SPEAKER_03]: Next, we meet Dr. Iang, who could not possibly be more obviously the Iron Monkey if he tried, but I don't think the movie is trying to hide that.
21:10.137 --> 21:15.420
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, he's treating two patients at once, and even writes their prescriptions at the same time one with each hand.
21:16.001 --> 21:25.827
[SPEAKER_03]: He charges the rich patient, but not the poor patient, which pisses off the rich patient, patient because the rich like to eat the poor, and also they hate to see anyone being given anything for free.
21:26.635 --> 21:29.838
[SPEAKER_03]: Chief Fox comes to visit Dr. Yang and we learn that they're kind of friendly.
21:30.498 --> 21:37.824
[SPEAKER_03]: Miss Orchard enters and it's clear she's a manic pixie kung fu nurse because these dream-like cords start playing when she enters and everyone adores her.
21:38.585 --> 21:50.715
[SPEAKER_03]: As she feeds the sick patients, Dr. Yang treats Fox for his injuries from the previous night fighting until the brawl bros come in, looking for women they can kidnap to serve as hookers in their brawl, but Chief Fox stands up to them.
21:51.335 --> 21:54.518
[SPEAKER_03]: They bribe him with gold, which he takes, but then he has them arrested.
21:55.342 --> 22:04.529
[SPEAKER_03]: Later that night as Dr. Yang and Miss Orchard closed the front of the clinic by placing tall wooden boards next to one another creating a fence that isn't connected to it isn't connected to any other parts of itself.
22:05.090 --> 22:09.273
[SPEAKER_03]: I gotta say I expected 1858 home security in China to be a little better than this.
22:09.733 --> 22:21.803
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, in some wind blows and tosses papers into the air which allows them to have a little kung-fu ballet of paper retrieval in a scene that is designed to show us their bond but also foreshadow that Miss Orchard might just be a martial arts badass or so.
22:22.563 --> 22:33.845
[SPEAKER_03]: And in another one of my favorite moves in this movie, a single last falling paper before him, Dr. Yang whips the base of his robe, creating the perfect little mini breeze to neatly land that paper on the stack in his hand.
22:35.065 --> 22:46.647
[SPEAKER_03]: Next, we see the iron monkey deliver bags of gold to several groups of peasants around the city before he sees Miss Orkid, on the roof, dressed in all black like him, and she's come to join him in his vigilante ways.
22:47.567 --> 22:51.508
[SPEAKER_03]: The next day, the governor gets a letter from the Capitol telling him the royal minister is coming to the city.
22:52.048 --> 22:55.731
[SPEAKER_03]: So he orders troops to rest anyone that could be the Iron Monkey.
22:56.131 --> 23:07.239
[SPEAKER_03]: So they start arresting people jumping, people selling monkey powder, people scratching their face, and this is when we get introduced to two more important characters, Wang Keying and his son, Wang Fei Hong.
23:08.100 --> 23:12.183
[SPEAKER_03]: Wang Keying is also a physician, but also he renowned martial arts expert.
23:12.933 --> 23:19.895
[SPEAKER_03]: We see that he is a tough father, rebuking his son for believing, for behaving too young and insisting the boy recite his medicinal cure tables.
23:20.615 --> 23:34.098
[SPEAKER_03]: Wong Feihong, the boy, sees a bully, mistreating some kids and shoots a rock at him, which leads to a fight where Wong Kying uses an umbrella in a violent enough fashion to inspire Matthew Wong 20 some years later, and yes, that is a Colin Firth Kingsman's reference.
23:34.922 --> 23:38.784
[SPEAKER_03]: Wong Kying and his son are arrested by guards who think he could be the Iron Monkey.
23:39.764 --> 23:43.825
[SPEAKER_03]: All the suspected monkeys are then brought before the governor in what I'm just going to call the throne room.
23:43.845 --> 23:45.726
[SPEAKER_03]: It seems like he's on a throne.
23:45.746 --> 23:49.428
[SPEAKER_03]: This is a setting that features prominently in the movie.
23:49.448 --> 23:50.668
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm just going to go with the throne room.
23:51.208 --> 23:59.271
[SPEAKER_03]: But before the governor can literally brand Wong Fay Hong in the arm, the real Iron Monkey appears and Wong Kying fights him, believing his
24:01.598 --> 24:08.147
[SPEAKER_03]: They fight to a draw before the monkey escapes, but not before the Iron Monkey calls the Governor disgrace and slashes off one of his eyebrows.
24:08.807 --> 24:14.975
[SPEAKER_03]: The Governor is impressed with Wong Kying and basically decides to hold his son hostage and force him to hunt an apprehend the Iron Monkey.
24:15.376 --> 24:16.557
[SPEAKER_03]: He gives him seven days.
24:17.480 --> 24:27.291
[SPEAKER_03]: Dejected, Wong K. Ying, Wong does a city looking for food, but finds the business owners angry at him for fighting the Iron Monkey, and I don't know how words spreads this fast in an eight before photographs, but I digress.
24:27.752 --> 24:34.539
[SPEAKER_03]: He ends up on the steps outside of Dr. Yang's clinic, dejected, until Miss Orkid takes pity on him and invites him in for dinner.
24:35.360 --> 24:46.504
[SPEAKER_03]: He's so hungry he starts eating the veggies while she's still cooking, and has a reaction to the special local hot peppers, not unlike the reaction I had to the lowest heat level of hot chicken at Bolton's in Nashville back in 2014.
24:47.725 --> 24:50.586
[SPEAKER_03]: He then volunteers to help cook and does little cook food.
24:50.886 --> 24:55.948
[SPEAKER_03]: Before Dr. Yang arrives and does one of the coolest things I've ever seen done with a sharp blade and a chunk of dough.
24:56.488 --> 25:00.330
[SPEAKER_03]: What he actually does is he slices the dough as he moves away from the hot walk with each
25:04.490 --> 25:09.454
[SPEAKER_03]: At dinner, Wong Kayeang tells the two about the situation with the Iron Monkey and his sons imprisonment.
25:10.374 --> 25:12.215
[SPEAKER_03]: He thanks them for the meal and abruptly leaves.
25:13.156 --> 25:22.743
[SPEAKER_03]: The next day, Dr. Yang and Miss Orgard go to visit the child and Chief Fox decides to let him leave the prison because he's sick and go into Dr. Yang care at the clinic.
25:23.799 --> 25:34.569
[SPEAKER_03]: Later that night, Long Kying is out on the rooftop searching for the Iron Monkey, but across the way, inexplicably Chief Fox is sitting on the roof having soup and beckons the men to come share a snack, and he does.
25:34.870 --> 25:38.853
[SPEAKER_03]: The scene is important because it allows Chief Fox to tell him that he's going to look out for his song.
25:39.614 --> 25:45.995
[SPEAKER_03]: which gives Wong Kay Ying a bit of peace before suddenly a ban of thugs with a wrapped up person scurry by on a nearby roof.
25:46.235 --> 25:50.116
[SPEAKER_03]: And I really did not realize how much roofs in 1858 China doubled his roads.
25:50.316 --> 25:53.416
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, he goes after them thinking one of them might be the Iron Monkey.
25:54.256 --> 26:03.978
[SPEAKER_03]: As Wong Kay Ying fights the four thugs chief fox unfolds the blanket to reveal that the men had kidnapped a woman before one of the thugs attacks him and knocks Chief Ying out
26:09.294 --> 26:10.335
[SPEAKER_03]: They refused to answer him.
26:10.755 --> 26:14.899
[SPEAKER_03]: They attacked with knives, and he uses only his shoulder to take one of them out.
26:15.600 --> 26:19.344
[SPEAKER_03]: He demasks one of them and realizes they are or used to be monks.
26:19.704 --> 26:20.024
[SPEAKER_03]: And then...
26:20.887 --> 26:30.919
[SPEAKER_03]: My dear friends, comes my single favorite moment in the entire film, as Wong K. Yang draws a literal line in the sand with his right foot before deploying his shadow kick technique against the next to Salem.
26:31.339 --> 26:34.623
[SPEAKER_03]: Kick him in the face, easily 10 times inside of two seconds.
26:35.304 --> 26:40.130
[SPEAKER_03]: At this point, I traditionally rewind the movie and watch that kick over and over again before moving on.
26:41.103 --> 26:50.569
[SPEAKER_03]: He dispatches the rest of the group before they all run at the arrival of the next boss level up, a woman I call the grabber, who is a step-up Shaolin monk warrior with iron hands.
26:50.849 --> 26:55.111
[SPEAKER_03]: Not literally iron, but in Kung Fu, you typically strengthen the part of your body and call it iron something.
26:55.431 --> 26:55.912
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't make it up.
26:56.032 --> 26:56.512
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a real thing.
26:57.172 --> 27:03.756
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, the grabber absolutely hates the scaffolding in this place and starts ripping it apart to throw and kick at one K-Yang.
27:04.117 --> 27:09.340
[SPEAKER_03]: When she deploys super-eagles claw, he recognizes that she's a student of the Shaolin trader, Hin Hong.
27:10.168 --> 27:20.954
[SPEAKER_03]: She replies that the Shaolin are now aligned with the Royal Minister, as the entire scaffolding collapses above them, both combatants jump out to opposite sides and for tonight, the fight is a draw.
27:21.975 --> 27:34.962
[SPEAKER_03]: Back at Dr. Yangs, he and Miss Orchard treat Wong-Fey Hong's illness, and one night while putting him to sleep, he truly says, I know who you are, which gives them both paws, but then really doesn't ever come back into play.
27:36.524 --> 27:44.097
[SPEAKER_03]: Miss Orchard has a memory that has entirely too much blue filter laid over it to signify that it's a flashback, like, oh my god, levels of blue.
27:44.838 --> 27:50.507
[SPEAKER_03]: But it's her giving birth to a stillborn baby only to have Dr. Yang redeem her debt to her owners and rescue her.
27:51.796 --> 27:59.399
[SPEAKER_03]: In the next scene, the Royal Minister arrives at the governor's mansion, though eagle-eyed viewers will quickly realize this is just Dr. Yang and Miss Orkid in disguise.
27:59.980 --> 28:12.105
[SPEAKER_03]: There's also weird that anyone would think the Royal Minister would travel with just a single assistant, though they do flash the Royal Fan, which is apparently a literal fan owned by the Royal Minister and not the last surviving fan of the Kansas City Royals.
28:12.873 --> 28:26.402
[SPEAKER_03]: Whatever the point is that the pair of heroes bluff their way through this encounter, including an ingenious bit where they have planted a note from the Iron Monkey into the briefcase to explain the missing official seal, and order Chief Fox to beat on the governor.
28:26.982 --> 28:31.825
[SPEAKER_03]: And they end up leaving with a ton of bribery money and order the governor to open the storehouses and feed the people.
28:32.726 --> 28:34.647
[SPEAKER_03]: Back at Dr. Yang's Wong-Fei Hong wakes up.
28:35.665 --> 28:40.149
[SPEAKER_03]: finds, I think, his dad's umbrella and not so stealthily steals a vase and then leaves Ms.
28:40.229 --> 28:44.794
[SPEAKER_03]: Orchard and Apology letter saying he's going to go sell the pills to find his father.
28:45.535 --> 28:55.825
[SPEAKER_03]: He goes into the street and starts selling the pills, but the bullies his father beat up earlier arrived and a wonderful little fight happens where we see that Wong Fahong is pretty damn good with the kicking an umbrella fighting him some.
28:56.225 --> 29:03.868
[SPEAKER_03]: This is a super charming little action sequence, but we have not even begun to see what this little dude can do even though he's actually being played by a girl.
29:04.649 --> 29:14.092
[SPEAKER_03]: But then the boy's boss shows up, and the fight gets a little more serious, and it's clear that the kid is outmatched in raw power, but he uses his wits and his size to his advantage for a while.
29:14.673 --> 29:19.835
[SPEAKER_03]: Just as he's about to get beat, Miss Orka shows up, and knocks out the bad guy with a rock and they escape.
29:20.693 --> 29:35.829
[SPEAKER_03]: Next, the real royal minister arrives and immediately takes over the throne room and summons the governor, who, of course, does not believe this is the real royal minister, since he has already visited, but he is quickly corrected and ordered to bring some chicken and shark fin soup for the royal minister to eat.
29:36.229 --> 29:40.894
[SPEAKER_03]: And I've never had shark fin soup, sounds disgusting to me, but apparently it is a delicacy.
29:41.815 --> 29:46.276
[SPEAKER_03]: Next, Wong Fei Hong watches Dr Yang doing drills with a staff and then takes his turn doing it.
29:46.496 --> 29:47.176
[SPEAKER_03]: He's a quick learner.
29:47.676 --> 29:50.717
[SPEAKER_03]: Then his father arrives, and immediately scolds him for his appearance.
29:51.037 --> 29:52.958
[SPEAKER_03]: But then, grabs his hand as they want.
29:53.238 --> 29:57.179
[SPEAKER_03]: After having earlier shaken, Fei Hong's hand off when the child tried to grab his.
29:58.059 --> 30:03.580
[SPEAKER_03]: At dinner, they play a robust game of Duck Duck Refuse, where Wong K Ying doesn't want his child to eat the most duck.
30:03.780 --> 30:06.961
[SPEAKER_03]: Even those others, a doctor right there telling him the boy needs protein.
30:07.201 --> 30:09.902
[SPEAKER_03]: Until finally, Fei Hong is allowed to eat the damn thing.
30:10.582 --> 30:15.570
[SPEAKER_03]: later that night we see the governor in drab close in the streets having been sent packing by the world minister.
30:15.590 --> 30:17.813
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not even sure we ever see him again.
30:18.668 --> 30:21.749
[SPEAKER_03]: somewhere nearby a woman cries, because she can't bury her husband.
30:22.409 --> 30:26.531
[SPEAKER_03]: Iron Monkey shows up to give her money for a burial, only for her to turn out to be the grabber.
30:26.991 --> 30:30.932
[SPEAKER_03]: And the dead husband is actually her accomplice, a man I shall call Johnny two swords.
30:31.432 --> 30:32.353
[SPEAKER_03]: This was all a trap.
30:32.833 --> 30:37.074
[SPEAKER_03]: They give him more trouble than the usual thugs, but it's still pretty clear Iron Monkey is better than them.
30:37.535 --> 30:41.936
[SPEAKER_03]: But just as he's leaving and insulting them, their boss jumps through the wall and it's the royal minister.
30:42.536 --> 30:46.838
[SPEAKER_03]: And he gets the monkey off their back by doing the Buddhist paw move on the monkey's back.
30:47.658 --> 30:53.021
[SPEAKER_03]: Iron monkey tries to retreat, but the royal minister follows, telling him he only has 30 minutes before the poison will kill him.
30:54.082 --> 30:59.805
[SPEAKER_03]: Some bells are tripped, alerting one king to activity nearby, and he goes and intercepts, and fights the royal minister.
30:59.825 --> 31:06.149
[SPEAKER_03]: It reveals himself to be the disgraced Shaolin monk, Henan Hong, who betrayed the order to become the Emperor's henchmen.
31:07.233 --> 31:11.998
[SPEAKER_03]: King tries the shadow kick trick again, but this time is opponent is too good, and blocks every kit.
31:12.499 --> 31:18.145
[SPEAKER_03]: The world minister tries the Buddhist palm again, but this time, King blocks it before eventually escaping.
31:19.046 --> 31:23.651
[SPEAKER_03]: Luckily, for Iron Monkey, he himself is a doctor, and he knows how to treat the Buddhist palm poison.
31:23.752 --> 31:27.275
[SPEAKER_03]: Structing Miss Orga don't want to do, spelling out the liberal recipe for the antidote.
31:27.992 --> 31:39.494
[SPEAKER_03]: When Wong Kying arrives, he soon discovers that Dr. Gang is the Iron Monkey, and after first appearing angry, he softens when Miss Orkid and Feihong plead with him, and he remembers how good Yang and Orkid have been to him in his son.
31:40.517 --> 31:52.181
[SPEAKER_03]: While he and his son write down some medical meditation type recipe thing, we also learn the one of the real ministers' talents is painting people's faces super accurately after fighting with them for two minutes in the street at night when it's dark.
31:52.801 --> 32:02.865
[SPEAKER_03]: As he draws a poster with Dr. Yang's face on it, but it's not to mass-produced posters, so that person can be found, it's just so the real minister can throw sharp things out of an anger, and that is very weird.
32:04.125 --> 32:12.348
[SPEAKER_03]: He and Henhang then orders his men to check all the clinics because clearly the men he fought last night are both injured and that's pretty smart honestly should have done that immediately.
32:12.988 --> 32:30.133
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, cut to Yang clinic where he and Kaying are super healed already as Yang tells the story of why the city needed Iron Monkey in the first place and it's a lot like Batman honestly because Iron Monkey's dad was killed by corrupt criminals and he speaks whisperly about hoping one day to have honest officials so the Iron Monkey can retire.
32:30.922 --> 32:32.603
[SPEAKER_03]: Suddenly, there's a knock at the door and Ms.
32:32.643 --> 32:36.246
[SPEAKER_03]: Orkin goes to check, but it's chief fox because fox is like to eat orchids.
32:36.306 --> 32:37.647
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't realize I kept that joke going.
32:38.228 --> 32:42.391
[SPEAKER_03]: But also, he's there to tell her the royal minister once Dr. Yang and Wong Kaye ain't arrested.
32:42.691 --> 32:46.534
[SPEAKER_03]: And when she plays innocent, he indicates he already knew Dr. Yang was the iron monkey.
32:46.854 --> 32:48.575
[SPEAKER_03]: And oh my god, there's only 20 minutes left.
32:49.456 --> 32:57.239
[SPEAKER_03]: I do want to give a moment to the hilarious river of tears that come out of the young actor's eyes during the crime because I'm saying goodbye to my dad moment.
32:57.599 --> 32:59.120
[SPEAKER_03]: It's an astonishing amount of liquid.
32:59.780 --> 33:07.343
[SPEAKER_03]: Kayeang scolds his son for crying only to turn around and shed a tear himself and I love this movie but this is a pretty toxic father thing happening here.
33:07.383 --> 33:15.427
[SPEAKER_03]: I know the movie is trying for the stern father tough love thing but a strong man sheds blood before he shed tears is some great A toxic masculinity.
33:16.287 --> 33:24.194
[SPEAKER_03]: Just as soon as the two men leave, the original four-shallon monks from the first scene of the governor's mansion knock on the door before knocking the door down entirely.
33:24.695 --> 33:26.216
[SPEAKER_03]: It happened so quickly after the men leave.
33:26.276 --> 33:31.200
[SPEAKER_03]: It's hard for me to believe they didn't hear it, but I am definitely down with the scene that lets Miss Orgood kick some ass.
33:32.128 --> 33:38.317
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's a great fight scene, and I love her style of fighting, which I have termed, I am completely unbothered by all of this tiger stance.
33:38.798 --> 33:43.244
[SPEAKER_03]: She's so, she's so nonchalant with her poses and facial expressions and even her movements.
33:43.745 --> 33:46.389
[SPEAKER_03]: A contrast to almost every other fighter in this film.
33:47.310 --> 33:58.095
[SPEAKER_03]: Then one of the monks uses a sleeping powder on her, which I have to believe is a party foul in the land of Kung Fu, you know, something that is generally considered on sportsmen like kind of like biting and boxing or bonding and baseball.
33:58.715 --> 34:08.440
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, the powder works and these assholes are about to do evil shit to this lovely woman when thankfully Wong Fay Hong decides to step in and this is probably my second favorite scene in the entire movie.
34:09.040 --> 34:37.518
[SPEAKER_03]: kid, actor just nails the moves, the line delivery, the faces, it's just a delightful scene to watch the staff weapon drills from earlier come back into play in an actual fight, which also shows how rapidly Fae-Hong adapted and improved his fighting and it should be noted that Wong Fae-Hong is the more famous of him and his father in real Chinese lore and he's considered a folk hero and they even made the movie once upon a time in China before this about him as an adult and that was Jet Lee playing him.
34:38.385 --> 34:44.668
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, I especially liked the sequence where he minks the guy dance by tapping the rod at his feet left and right left and right left and right and then smacks him on the chin.
34:45.288 --> 34:49.690
[SPEAKER_03]: But then that grabber shows up and she is clearly too much for Fahong, though he does try his best.
34:49.990 --> 34:52.070
[SPEAKER_03]: She eventually knocks him out instead of killing him.
34:52.851 --> 34:58.013
[SPEAKER_03]: Miss Yank, Miss Yank, Miss Orkid then goes to where Yank and K, Yank are and tells them about all these events.
34:58.741 --> 35:05.068
[SPEAKER_03]: We then see that the royal minister Hen Hong is having the boy hung and tortured in the throne room, not hung like Kildhong but dangled.
35:05.969 --> 35:17.822
[SPEAKER_03]: As chief fox shakes his head and tries to appeal for the boy's life, but Johnny two swords attacks chief fox, and eventually chief Yang is about to, chief Yang, chief fox is about to be killed when they iron monkey appears.
35:18.382 --> 35:22.046
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's clear to us viewers that this Iron Monkey has actually won K-Ying.
35:22.827 --> 35:31.097
[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone starts fighting, and at one point the Royal Minister spits a cherry at won K-Ying that embeds in the body of a henchman K-Ying was fighting.
35:31.951 --> 35:41.173
[SPEAKER_03]: Then the real iron monkey shows up and now it's go time as there are two of them to contend with, and it's kind of hilarious that they both had to run back to the clinic to change clothes before this rescue could take place.
35:41.813 --> 35:49.175
[SPEAKER_03]: The original monkey severes the train holding Fae-Hung up, up a 4k and can grab him, Hen-Hung uses his doctor-strained cloak to retrieve the boy.
35:49.675 --> 35:56.936
[SPEAKER_03]: With the kid lying on the table in front of the throne, grab her and Johnny two swords, attack the two iron monkeys, and that's just silly, because the real iron monkey
35:59.777 --> 36:04.358
[SPEAKER_03]: Before he got a sheep shot, boot upon, wait, was that last night that happened?
36:04.518 --> 36:06.179
[SPEAKER_03]: Shit, it might even be the same night.
36:06.519 --> 36:08.039
[SPEAKER_03]: It's the sun even come up since that fight.
36:08.139 --> 36:08.959
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think it has.
36:09.119 --> 36:21.922
[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, just as hit homes about to boot upon the kid, lady monkey, aka Miss Orkid, who was dressed in all black and somehow completely cured of all that sleeping powder from a half hour ago, appears and throws knives at the pin-hung.
36:22.162 --> 36:23.963
[SPEAKER_03]: I said the pin-hung like he's an article.
36:24.775 --> 36:54.243
[SPEAKER_03]: uh... who uses one of his concubines as a human shield allowing time for chief fox to pull the boy off the table there's another amazing sequence i want to point out in the side fight between young and grab her where he stops her sword with a flat palm slaps the other palm on the other side of the sword runs them both down the length of the sword to her face and then side punches in the face like six times really fast uh... and i love that uh... young tells orchid and k-ying to get the boy out of there and actually says about the blue royal minister i can handle him
36:54.583 --> 36:57.045
[SPEAKER_03]: which is a weird thing to say about a man who nearly killed you.
36:57.485 --> 36:59.167
[SPEAKER_03]: Wait, was that last night's ad happen?
36:59.307 --> 37:00.788
[SPEAKER_03]: Shit, this might even be the same night.
37:01.048 --> 37:02.630
[SPEAKER_03]: Has the sun even come up since that fight?
37:02.710 --> 37:04.191
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think it has, anyway.
37:04.791 --> 37:13.318
[SPEAKER_03]: Outside, work it in K-Yang, take out the grabber using very common metal, using the very common metal ball to the eye, followed by being kicked through a wall technique.
37:13.719 --> 37:18.603
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm surprised we don't see that combo more often in movies since it's so storied, and obviously super effective.
37:19.305 --> 37:23.570
[SPEAKER_03]: As everyone escapes and runs away, the Royal Minister crashes through a wall and confronts them all in the street.
37:24.151 --> 37:34.702
[SPEAKER_03]: As Chief Fox and Orchard take Faeong to hide, Yang and Kying attack, but Hinhang throws Dr. Yang through a whole ass wall into a field of close lines.
37:35.323 --> 37:54.130
[SPEAKER_03]: It's clear he and hung his stronger than both of them, but they persist, even as the fighting causes a massive fire to break out, causing all three combatants to jump up to the tops of the burning, city block full of blankets and clothes lines on fire, with the fighters having to balance on the tops of wooden beams that are themselves also on fire.
37:55.370 --> 38:00.892
[SPEAKER_03]: Also, they didn't actually take Fae-Hong to hide, they're standing right outside watching this fight and it makes my head hurt.
38:02.077 --> 38:03.838
[SPEAKER_03]: Regardless, I love the final fight.
38:03.938 --> 38:07.860
[SPEAKER_03]: I love how everyone holds themselves up to find gravity with forearm strength, their toes strength.
38:07.940 --> 38:12.843
[SPEAKER_03]: I love how the heroes keep nonchalantly tapping on their onfire, cloning to put the fires out.
38:13.243 --> 38:13.964
[SPEAKER_03]: I love the luck.
38:14.344 --> 38:19.107
[SPEAKER_03]: I love the fire, which helps the fighting surface be even more dangerous than just being balancing on sticks.
38:19.447 --> 38:22.749
[SPEAKER_03]: I love them balancing on the broken top of the pole after it breaks off.
38:23.129 --> 38:25.210
[SPEAKER_03]: I love the sweat on everyone's face from the heat.
38:25.791 --> 38:27.932
[SPEAKER_03]: And I love the trapeze on the shoulders landing.
38:28.652 --> 38:33.093
[SPEAKER_03]: And then being tossed stabs to vault out of the fire while the royal minister burns.
38:33.153 --> 38:33.913
[SPEAKER_03]: I love it all.
38:34.533 --> 38:34.933
[SPEAKER_03]: Fight me.
38:35.614 --> 38:40.335
[SPEAKER_03]: Days later, at the train station, Chief Fox shows up to say goodbye to Wong Feihong and Wong Keying.
38:41.415 --> 38:43.955
[SPEAKER_03]: As the governor arrives, that's new governor arrives.
38:43.995 --> 38:46.796
[SPEAKER_03]: They all share hopes for the future and say they're goodbyes.
38:46.996 --> 38:50.117
[SPEAKER_03]: And Keying grabs Feihong's hand as they walk away.
38:51.182 --> 38:55.666
[SPEAKER_03]: And the end title card tells us that holy shit, Dr. Yang and Miss Orchard were lovers after all.
38:56.106 --> 38:57.267
[SPEAKER_03]: Or became lovers later.
38:57.607 --> 38:57.907
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
38:58.788 --> 39:04.553
[SPEAKER_03]: Another title card says, Fae-Hong grew up to be one of China's greatest heroes who helped lead the rebellion against the Qing dynasty.
39:05.033 --> 39:07.575
[SPEAKER_03]: And that, my friends, is the Iron Monkey.
39:08.095 --> 39:08.856
[SPEAKER_03]: What did you guys think?
39:09.783 --> 39:09.963
[SPEAKER_04]: Hmm.
39:12.144 --> 39:16.546
[SPEAKER_04]: I can't remember if I had seen this movie before, but I did have it on Blu-ray.
39:16.626 --> 39:20.548
[SPEAKER_04]: It is the American Blu-ray, so it is the same version that you saw.
39:22.909 --> 39:26.131
[SPEAKER_04]: But it was pretty clear once I saw Miramax on this.
39:26.171 --> 39:30.813
[SPEAKER_04]: There was a reason why, and this is before we all knew what a monster Harvey Weinstein was.
39:32.194 --> 39:47.965
[SPEAKER_04]: later on, but he was a monster in another way, and that he was called Harvey Siserhands, and he would always cut things down for whatever reason, for whatever stupid reason he was thinking of, and whatever, but it was pretty apparent from the get-go that this was cut.
39:48.506 --> 39:59.394
[SPEAKER_04]: It didn't have anything to do with the original, but I was just like, oh my gosh, this feels very, it's fast-paced, but it's faster pace to then, I think, the original filmmakers and
40:01.875 --> 40:12.038
[SPEAKER_04]: So, that I'm not shocked to see to hear that they had cut some stuff out and it's such a hypocritical thing, too, considering what Miramax was coming out with in this era and everything like that.
40:12.478 --> 40:17.019
[SPEAKER_04]: If it was a matter of length, well, they came out with pulp fiction, the following year.
40:17.439 --> 40:21.280
[SPEAKER_04]: If it was violence, they had reservoir dogs, previews.
40:21.460 --> 40:31.022
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's just like, you know, whatever reason they came up with, we're cutting it, I'm almost certain they let go in other movies and everything.
40:31.402 --> 40:45.979
[SPEAKER_04]: If you were if your name wasn't Quentin Tarantino who was the guy who presented this and in the United States if you weren't Quentin Tarantino You weren't gonna get that your own your own so which is weird though You would think Quentin Tarantino would be like yeah, let's keep it the way it is and
40:47.400 --> 40:53.404
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know why he must not have had any power in this situation at the time, so very weird.
40:54.565 --> 41:12.977
[SPEAKER_04]: So yes, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, I really love the action in this, and it's not a just nothing new, we've seen it in Robinhood and Zoro and things like that, but I like setting up criminals as the people who are actually good, and you know what clearly
41:15.919 --> 41:22.364
[SPEAKER_04]: doesn't necessarily mean good or moral, especially in this case where everybody's corrupt, everybody in power is corrupt.
41:24.206 --> 41:32.352
[SPEAKER_04]: So it just kind of shows like, yeah, this, this is a lawbreaker, but that doesn't always mean a bad thing in certain circumstances.
41:34.254 --> 41:45.145
[SPEAKER_04]: I also, I thought that was illustrated pretty brilliantly later when, uh, when, uh, Donnie Yan is trying to buy stuff after fighting with the Iron Monkey and the vendors that sell him anything.
41:45.285 --> 41:51.872
[SPEAKER_04]: They're just like, they're just like, no, I mean, Iron Monkey, he's a lawbreaker, but he's he's our lawbreaker.
41:52.372 --> 42:15.842
[SPEAKER_04]: Basically, you mentioned a lot of this in the synopsis, but I like how Dr. Yang gives medicine to the poor guy and makes the rich guy buy his even appealing to his ego by saying, I can't give you a cheaper drug if you like, and the guy's like, no, I can avoid it, and you know, and I know for some people, that's just pure communism.
42:18.361 --> 42:22.645
[SPEAKER_04]: kind of agree with this continent, by the way.
42:23.386 --> 42:28.672
[SPEAKER_04]: I like how the security guy takes the brides and sends the guy who bribed him to jail.
42:28.732 --> 42:30.053
[SPEAKER_04]: That's really funny to me.
42:32.255 --> 42:35.318
[SPEAKER_04]: You mentioned the sequence where they're grabbing all the floating flyers.
42:35.358 --> 42:41.284
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's just a great cinematic piece that's really, really fun and beautiful.
42:42.245 --> 42:43.846
[SPEAKER_04]: Donnie Yan and the umbrella.
42:44.706 --> 42:47.807
[SPEAKER_04]: Again, just in general, just watching Donnie Yan.
42:47.907 --> 42:49.307
[SPEAKER_04]: I love doing that.
42:49.347 --> 42:50.508
[SPEAKER_04]: I love watching Donnie Yan.
42:50.868 --> 42:54.469
[SPEAKER_04]: I love that he kicks that dude like 20 times in just a few seconds.
42:54.509 --> 42:55.789
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that you brought that up.
42:56.409 --> 42:57.690
[SPEAKER_04]: It's obviously stuff up.
42:57.910 --> 42:58.350
[SPEAKER_04]: Whatever.
42:58.510 --> 42:59.090
[SPEAKER_04]: Just love it.
43:01.531 --> 43:07.953
[SPEAKER_04]: I love the part in the flashback where the dude is about the kill miss or wicked and she just closes her eyes and just ready to accept it.
43:09.173 --> 43:17.356
[SPEAKER_04]: And she's a badass, her signature fight in this is, it might be my favorite part in this.
43:17.396 --> 43:19.897
[SPEAKER_04]: It ends a little bit too soon with a sleeping powder.
43:19.917 --> 43:21.258
[SPEAKER_04]: I kind of wish they didn't do it.
43:21.818 --> 43:27.060
[SPEAKER_04]: Especially considering, like you said, she recovers from that sleeping powder pretty quickly.
43:27.900 --> 43:36.323
[SPEAKER_04]: She's taken out of the action and then she's able to walk wherever to where they are and tell them, hey, months came and took a good.
43:36.943 --> 43:51.044
[SPEAKER_04]: and all that um but she in that fight she has that kick where she does the summer salt and kicks the other guy behind her and and then there's that part with a spinning table that's like sitting there just you know hitting people and just kind of like going we have a mind of its own or whatever
43:52.105 --> 44:06.865
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, one thing, and I don't know if this is a cultural thing or what, but it could be just that they cut stuff like this out of the movie, I mean, who knows, but I don't think Iron Monkey ever struggles with the idea that his actions are also hurting others.
44:06.905 --> 44:08.187
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not saying he's wrong.
44:08.943 --> 44:20.751
[SPEAKER_04]: But it feels like it would be a, it would weigh heavily on you that other people are going to jail because the corrupt government thinks that they are you or whatever.
44:20.791 --> 44:30.277
[SPEAKER_04]: And I guess, I guess you could kind of get over that by saying, well, that's just them, you know, that's what else is new.
44:30.377 --> 44:33.179
[SPEAKER_04]: The people's lives are already horrible anyway.
44:33.259 --> 44:34.299
[SPEAKER_04]: So whatever.
44:34.339 --> 44:37.241
[SPEAKER_04]: But we don't ever really see him feel any guilt or anything about that.
44:39.011 --> 44:52.636
[SPEAKER_04]: that his actions are leading to people around the town thinking that stealing is okay under any context because Donnie in comes in and they try to steal from him and they're and he's like, you know, they're like, they're like, what's wrong with stealing?
44:53.116 --> 44:57.458
[SPEAKER_04]: Basically, and it doesn't seem like that ever comes up either that he doesn't thank to himself.
44:57.498 --> 45:02.220
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I'm stealing for a good reason, but it seems like it's filtered.
45:02.240 --> 45:06.842
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, you see in the sequel, when the Joker shows up, Alfred's going to teach him,
45:07.682 --> 45:13.527
[SPEAKER_03]: to listen about how he caused the Joker by being Iron Mountain.
45:15.589 --> 45:16.991
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I see.
45:17.151 --> 45:18.972
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm damn gonna need to see that sequel.
45:19.913 --> 45:23.496
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, uh, Wong-Vehong, you mentioned this.
45:23.897 --> 45:26.299
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, he's played as a kid in this movie.
45:26.359 --> 45:30.323
[SPEAKER_04]: Huge folk hero in China has been portrayed in a ton of movies.
45:31.583 --> 45:36.045
[SPEAKER_04]: very much enjoy his big fight scene in the middle of the movie also using an umbrella.
45:36.125 --> 45:40.947
[SPEAKER_04]: Love when he says, my country is pretty good after that first fight.
45:42.108 --> 45:46.610
[SPEAKER_04]: The fight after Miss Orkid brought this up to get's taken out of it with a sleeping powder.
45:47.790 --> 45:50.311
[SPEAKER_04]: He's using that boastick in a lot of creative ways.
45:50.351 --> 45:51.112
[SPEAKER_04]: I like using it.
45:51.472 --> 45:58.535
[SPEAKER_04]: I like when he uses it to break the tube with the powder in it and he's saying all these things, like the state goes into the hole and all that other type of stuff.
45:59.415 --> 46:01.576
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, and the final fight is great.
46:01.916 --> 46:04.716
[SPEAKER_04]: I love the staging on the polls at the end of the fire all around.
46:04.736 --> 46:06.336
[SPEAKER_04]: I wouldn't change a thing about it.
46:06.897 --> 46:15.778
[SPEAKER_04]: It is a little hard to take seriously though when all these fighters have shown that they defy physics regularly.
46:16.238 --> 46:19.619
[SPEAKER_04]: So like when they're sitting there like, I'm hanging up on these polls.
46:19.699 --> 46:20.799
[SPEAKER_04]: I better not fall.
46:20.859 --> 46:23.640
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, we've just seen a bunch of you motherfuckers.
46:24.340 --> 46:40.676
[SPEAKER_04]: jump from the floor through the roof in some scenes and so like like you could have easily navigated that and just gotten on the roof or something like that and not worried about it but anyway I did really like this movie I would love to see the uncut version of it someday
46:41.617 --> 46:45.898
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'll start there, think, because I think I didn't see the link up version.
46:46.259 --> 46:49.720
[SPEAKER_00]: I just found last night when I was doing some research, I was like, oh, there's two versions.
46:49.780 --> 46:51.060
[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder which one I watched.
46:51.120 --> 46:59.363
[SPEAKER_00]: And the main thing that I saw was running time was about five minutes different, and that the unconversion doesn't have the Quentin Tarantino presents.
47:00.203 --> 47:07.368
[SPEAKER_00]: at the front of it or whatever, and the version I watched was longer, was five minutes longer, and it doesn't have that Quintarentino thing.
47:07.448 --> 47:10.870
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's quite possible I watched a different version than you.
47:11.050 --> 47:17.494
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, that is just based on my little bit of slew thing last night as I was trying to figure out what I watched.
47:17.534 --> 47:23.258
[SPEAKER_00]: And I will say this, the movie I watched was hilarious, like even was
47:24.298 --> 47:50.988
[SPEAKER_00]: Looney Tunes hilarious throughout most of it through sound effects and just a lot of the stuff that was happening There's a moment you mentioned and I'll bring it up as an example of just what is throughout this movie And again, I don't think so much has been changed that this tone still isn't there in in fact both of you guys talk about how funny this movie is At points, but Jeremy and your description you mentioned the cocky bind being used as a human shield
47:52.171 --> 48:01.117
[SPEAKER_00]: She goes on to be used as a weapon, like he throws that concubine at him and then she's kicked back to him.
48:02.378 --> 48:08.342
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and in this version, she, like she comically gets kicked off the screen.
48:08.402 --> 48:09.743
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, very hilarious.
48:10.044 --> 48:12.525
[SPEAKER_04]: But she does, that doesn't come back into play at all.
48:12.565 --> 48:16.308
[SPEAKER_04]: Like I don't think that Jeremy, that doesn't happen in the real, in our version, doesn't.
48:16.448 --> 48:17.949
[SPEAKER_04]: No, okay, there you go.
48:17.969 --> 48:22.914
[SPEAKER_04]: Because once she gets kicked off the screen, it's hilarious because it's the way the way it's presented.
48:23.634 --> 48:25.096
[SPEAKER_04]: But there's nothing else after that.
48:25.116 --> 48:29.199
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm sitting there going, how can you cut something that brilliant out of a movie?
48:29.299 --> 48:30.480
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so funny.
48:30.580 --> 48:32.322
[SPEAKER_00]: And the movie is full of that kind of stuff.
48:32.422 --> 48:34.043
[SPEAKER_00]: It also, my understanding is,
48:34.964 --> 48:54.535
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it is, uh, often the original version was much more what they call undercranced, like a lot of sped up martial arts action and during different moments, and they actually slowed some of that down, uh, in the editing, although there's still a couple from what it sounds like you guys were saying, uh, moments that are sped up, uh, in that way, but I don't know.
48:54.795 --> 48:59.938
[SPEAKER_00]: It was, it was one of those experiences for me where, uh, well, I'll just say this.
49:00.798 --> 49:07.521
[SPEAKER_00]: Marshall Arts movies haven't been my favorite kinds of movies and some of that has to do with violence, you know, whatever.
49:07.681 --> 49:11.202
[SPEAKER_00]: But Jackie Chan I love and it was always the sense of humor.
49:11.322 --> 49:17.485
[SPEAKER_00]: It was always the understanding of how silly, how ridiculous all this stuff can be and how fun it can be.
49:17.665 --> 49:19.325
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what this movie is.
49:19.545 --> 49:20.466
[SPEAKER_00]: It is ridiculous.
49:20.586 --> 49:21.266
[SPEAKER_00]: It is fun.
49:22.346 --> 49:26.048
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the the guy uses his sleeve,
49:26.348 --> 49:33.949
[SPEAKER_00]: as some sort of solid weapon that just expands against the laws of like he breaks a wall with the end of his sleeve ribbon.
49:33.969 --> 49:36.270
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, like what's going on half the time here.
49:36.290 --> 49:38.970
[SPEAKER_00]: I got on and sleeves must must be.
49:40.010 --> 49:48.132
[SPEAKER_00]: I think my favorite scene is the papers, the recapturing the papers between the two of them.
49:48.172 --> 49:51.293
[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's really beautiful and interesting and fun.
49:51.313 --> 49:53.333
[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a lot of really fun, innovative
49:54.073 --> 49:58.895
[SPEAKER_00]: you know, uh, ways to play with props and different things within fights, uh, yeah.
49:59.355 --> 50:01.476
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I had a blast watching this movie.
50:01.636 --> 50:03.676
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, you guys mentioned most of the other stuff I have here.
50:03.696 --> 50:07.278
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, one of my favorite lines was fight poison with poison.
50:07.418 --> 50:08.838
[SPEAKER_00]: What a brilliant doctor.
50:08.858 --> 50:10.619
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, thank you.
50:11.279 --> 50:36.758
[SPEAKER_04]: How did nobody else think of fighting poisons with poison makes so double the poison that works I never would have thought of that One in the chat I'm noticing a thing about the dubbing and that's the other thing about this version that I'm sure that I'm sure the same thing happened for Jeremy's version They are doing a different dub of even though it's in Mandarin or Canton.
50:36.798 --> 50:37.959
[SPEAKER_04]: I can't remember which
50:40.297 --> 50:48.827
[SPEAKER_04]: When it's clear that their mouths don't match up with the actual interests with the act and they're speaking the actual language.
50:48.867 --> 50:51.630
[SPEAKER_04]: So it's not like a bad English dub or whatever.
50:51.710 --> 50:56.656
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just so like, so like in your version, everything was good.
50:56.676 --> 50:59.580
[SPEAKER_00]: They were clearly saying, I didn't sense anything was dubbed.
51:00.612 --> 51:08.134
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so, uh, yeah, that's pretty much all I had down, uh, the, uh, the, I thought the pole dancing at the end was great.
51:08.814 --> 51:11.334
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, hottest pole dancing I've seen since day low as the hustlers.
51:11.354 --> 51:13.215
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so, uh, so yeah, there you go.
51:13.235 --> 51:20.616
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,
51:25.459 --> 51:26.941
[SPEAKER_02]: be very, very quiet.
51:27.021 --> 51:27.943
[SPEAKER_02]: She can't watch secrets.
51:27.963 --> 51:29.725
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Gary, little secret.
51:29.745 --> 51:31.467
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you something I've never told anyone.
51:34.152 --> 51:37.353
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm going to go ahead and say mine, it has been said.
51:37.393 --> 51:38.654
[SPEAKER_04]: It was said in the synopsis.
51:38.734 --> 51:42.355
[SPEAKER_04]: I just saw this movie, once upon a time in China.
51:42.455 --> 51:50.317
[SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of like, it's kind of like, when you watch Iron Monkey, it's interesting.
51:50.357 --> 51:55.539
[SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of like the prequel for Wong-Ve Hong and everything.
51:55.559 --> 51:57.460
[SPEAKER_03]: It was actually intended to be that.
51:58.108 --> 52:04.034
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, complete with umbrella fight, which is something that Jet Lea does and once upon a time in China.
52:05.696 --> 52:11.042
[SPEAKER_04]: And you know, I think a lot of these filmmakers have made Wong Fei Heng movies.
52:11.562 --> 52:17.168
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm pretty sure that Yingwo Ping did drunken master was was was that.
52:17.328 --> 52:28.254
[SPEAKER_04]: was Jack and Jackie Chan, as that character, but like, but sweetheart, the TSUI, heart, and I think it's like sweet something like that.
52:28.594 --> 52:31.175
[SPEAKER_04]: Who, unfortunately, like a lot of,
52:33.036 --> 52:45.320
[SPEAKER_04]: people who came from Hong Kong over to here, trying to make American movies, faced the same challenges as everybody else to John Wu may have been the only one who really got a few good movies out.
52:46.760 --> 52:52.682
[SPEAKER_04]: And everybody else, like stars and directors, were always getting pigeonholed in these one things.
52:53.282 --> 53:00.148
[SPEAKER_04]: Sweetheart did the movie Double Team, the Dennis Rodman John Claude Van Dammovie, that was awful.
53:01.049 --> 53:13.280
[SPEAKER_04]: And he did another John Claude Van Dammovie after that, but Sweetheart was the producer and writer of this film, and he also directed and wrote once upon a time in China.
53:13.860 --> 53:22.705
[SPEAKER_04]: So there's a lot of like parallels between those two movies obviously, so it was hard for me to go against that.
53:22.745 --> 53:24.626
[SPEAKER_04]: There's plenty others obviously that can go.
53:24.646 --> 53:25.367
[SPEAKER_04]: That's a good call.
53:26.860 --> 53:49.293
[SPEAKER_00]: I went with one that has also been passingly mentioned, like you have said, there are many different versions of this kind of character, and most cultures have a version of this character, who is a person of the people breaking the law to help the people, whether it be Robin Hood, or the one I went with, which is Mask of Zorro, I think is a good double feature here.
53:50.854 --> 54:01.962
[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the same feel, a lot of the same, pretending to be who you're not and interacting with the people in both forms of who you are.
54:02.642 --> 54:04.924
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, Mask of Zoro is my double feature.
54:05.494 --> 54:24.087
[SPEAKER_04]: And I also considered at one time Batman, but then it was like which Batman, maybe Batman begins probably goes along with this one more than any other one, but there was a thought of maybe putting Batman in this, but yeah, anyway, yeah, I think that's a really good choice.
54:24.107 --> 54:25.869
[SPEAKER_02]: So that was a good choice as well.
54:26.689 --> 54:32.854
[SPEAKER_04]: All right, so what's we got next week's homework and it's Aaron's turn, so what
54:34.835 --> 54:38.956
[SPEAKER_00]: I would like to tell you about a woman named Ellen Hure.
54:39.696 --> 54:42.176
[SPEAKER_00]: Ellen Hure is a fully artist.
54:42.436 --> 54:48.077
[SPEAKER_00]: She has done almost 400 movies, 396 movies starting with Annie.
54:48.137 --> 54:49.798
[SPEAKER_00]: In 1982, all the way up to the present day.
54:50.458 --> 54:53.718
[SPEAKER_00]: She is a writer, a stand-up comedian and a fully artist.
54:53.838 --> 55:00.800
[SPEAKER_00]: She has done fully work on such movies as Iron Monkey and movies.
55:01.040 --> 55:03.000
[SPEAKER_00]: What do we talk about last week?
55:04.000 --> 55:05.922
[SPEAKER_00]: It's my very first news broadcast news.
55:05.962 --> 55:06.883
[SPEAKER_00]: She did broadcast news.
55:06.903 --> 55:12.469
[SPEAKER_00]: She did iron monkey and she is the connection this week To the fifth element.
55:12.509 --> 55:14.191
[SPEAKER_00]: She also did fully work on the fifth element.
55:14.211 --> 55:15.612
[SPEAKER_00]: So fifth element.
55:15.753 --> 55:20.958
[SPEAKER_00]: I will be Thought you were given us a documentary about fully orders.
55:20.978 --> 55:21.539
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, me too
55:23.481 --> 55:25.403
[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy the amount of movie she has done.
55:25.503 --> 55:27.505
[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought I'd bring her name up.
55:27.545 --> 55:31.810
[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's amazing what the IMDB collaboration search will will bring up.
55:31.970 --> 55:36.395
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, this is supposed to be on to be go ahead Chris.
55:36.933 --> 55:43.218
[SPEAKER_04]: This movie's batshit, and it's, it's the good kind of batshit, but it's batshit.
55:43.558 --> 55:53.486
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it is, it is Luke Basson before Luke Basson went full Luke Basson, you know, in some other movies.
55:53.506 --> 55:53.986
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.
55:54.066 --> 55:56.268
[SPEAKER_04]: I always considered this full Luke Basson.
55:56.288 --> 56:00.151
[SPEAKER_04]: This is pretty, this is pretty maximum Luke Basson, man.
56:00.411 --> 56:01.692
[SPEAKER_04]: All right, fair enough.
56:01.992 --> 56:23.218
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I considered this about as full Luke Bassan as it gets, but I mean, if we're talking about his directorial style, yes, we're talking about him being a creep, it probably started earlier, but I am I'm looking forward to watching this one again, it's been it's been a second since I've seen the fifth element probably since we send the movie.
56:24.220 --> 56:26.741
[SPEAKER_04]: uh but uh but yeah I'm I'm looking forward to this.
56:26.881 --> 56:31.863
[SPEAKER_04]: This is this is Prime Bruce Willis too and Gary Oldman's fantastic and it's good.
56:32.063 --> 56:32.243
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
56:32.283 --> 56:32.523
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
56:33.403 --> 56:33.863
[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
56:34.403 --> 56:38.204
[SPEAKER_04]: That is going to do it for this week uh chat.
56:38.325 --> 56:40.785
[SPEAKER_04]: Once again, thank you so much for coming out here today.
56:40.845 --> 56:43.206
[SPEAKER_04]: We appreciate you very much.
56:43.306 --> 56:47.187
[SPEAKER_04]: Next week's movie is the fifth element and we will see you next time.
56:47.547 --> 56:47.888
[SPEAKER_04]: See you.
56:48.228 --> 56:48.548
[SPEAKER_04]: Bye guys.
56:48.568 --> 56:48.888

57:25.841 --> 57:30.440
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm doing all right, I'm in the middle of fantasy football draft season.
57:32.604 --> 57:34.965
[SPEAKER_04]: all the things that that entails.
57:35.045 --> 57:37.985
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just, I don't know, it's maddening sometimes.
57:38.105 --> 57:53.989
[SPEAKER_04]: I go into these drafts going, all right, here's some guys that I want and it just people reach so hard for players and it's so hard to get to the person that you want.
57:54.069 --> 57:56.630
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, it's hard to realize sometimes
58:02.631 --> 58:05.694
[SPEAKER_04]: that aren't as attractive as that new rookie or something like that.
58:05.754 --> 58:23.832
[SPEAKER_04]: But in one of the fancy drafts that I was in over the weekend, I have the fifth pick and there I want to get a running back because I've got the running back hungry league that
58:24.613 --> 58:47.716
[SPEAKER_04]: it's a standard league so it's not one of those things we get points per reception or anything like that so it's so running backs are very highly valued so you want to get one of those good ones those rookie ones because after that the pick and start getting a little slim and I don't know I'm always snake bin that league in what position of a draft because it's like
58:48.777 --> 59:07.322
[SPEAKER_04]: I had the fifth pick and I'm sitting there going, okay, either either Ashton, Gentie, Trevion, Henderson, or Murray, and Hampton get one of those guys and I knew that there was a really good chance that I was not going to get any of those guys.
59:07.582 --> 59:09.283
[SPEAKER_04]: because that's just the way that league is.
59:09.323 --> 59:10.804
[SPEAKER_04]: They just go after running back.
59:10.824 --> 59:12.566
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like crazy.
59:13.306 --> 59:22.552
[SPEAKER_04]: And I always have a question to myself, do I want to go after a running back that I will be be solid, but it's not the guy that I'm looking for.
59:23.847 --> 59:34.032
[SPEAKER_04]: Or do I go after another position and I decided I was either going to try to pick up Jalen Hertz or I was going to get George Kittle at the fifth if all those three running backs went off.
59:34.052 --> 59:38.874
[SPEAKER_04]: And so the draft goes almost immediately exactly how I think it's going to go.
59:39.214 --> 59:42.596
[SPEAKER_04]: First guy gets Ashton, Jenty, the second guy gets Marion Hampton.
59:43.116 --> 59:48.179
[SPEAKER_04]: Then the next guy picks Pook and Akua, this is a keeper league by the way, so the reason
59:53.681 --> 01:00:01.988
[SPEAKER_04]: because oh, they just prized these rookie running backs over Christian McAverley, or Dumear Gibbs, or something like that, because those guys are already gone.
01:00:02.668 --> 01:00:10.074
[SPEAKER_04]: But the next guy, the guy just before me gets up, and I'm like, okay, I mean, if he's going to get Trevi on Henderson, he'll just snap him right up.
01:00:11.795 --> 01:00:20.202
[SPEAKER_04]: He waits, there's a two minute time limit, it goes into the second, it's like 50, 40 seconds, I'm like, what is?
01:00:21.061 --> 01:00:37.874
[SPEAKER_04]: Is he going to get like there's several good players he could get here is he going to skip over Trevi on Henderson and no just there is he snapped him up and I'm now I'm like looking at this running back crew that's left over in this thing and I'm like.
01:00:39.407 --> 01:00:42.168
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want, I mean, these guys are good.
01:00:42.228 --> 01:00:43.929
[SPEAKER_04]: I just don't want James Conner.
01:00:44.029 --> 01:00:45.450
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want Chuba Hubbard.
01:00:45.530 --> 01:00:49.172
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want these, these players.
01:00:50.092 --> 01:00:53.194
[SPEAKER_04]: And so there's Jalen Hurt sitting there and there's George Kittle.
01:00:53.214 --> 01:00:59.477
[SPEAKER_04]: I want to head and got Jalen Hurt so I could have a really good quarterback a top tier quarterback in my fantasy lineup.
01:01:00.077 --> 01:01:04.919
[SPEAKER_04]: And then the other part of it was, I had Chuba Hubbard last year.
01:01:04.939 --> 01:01:06.280
[SPEAKER_04]: I offered,
01:01:07.243 --> 01:01:10.405
[SPEAKER_04]: a third for a third round pick, Chubahubbert.
01:01:10.525 --> 01:01:12.326
[SPEAKER_04]: I figured people would snap that up.
01:01:12.386 --> 01:01:15.768
[SPEAKER_04]: There's people who had no good keepers whatsoever.
01:01:16.609 --> 01:01:18.250
[SPEAKER_04]: And nobody took me up on it.
01:01:18.650 --> 01:01:21.992
[SPEAKER_04]: And he gets picked in the first seven picks, Chubahubbert.
01:01:22.453 --> 01:01:26.275
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sitting there going, I offered this guy for a third round pick.
01:01:26.375 --> 01:01:29.797
[SPEAKER_04]: You guys are like snapping it up in the first round, what's going on?
01:01:31.098 --> 01:01:31.498
[SPEAKER_04]: And yes,
01:01:33.019 --> 01:01:38.142
[SPEAKER_04]: If that person had traded with me, he would've had to keep Hubbard and then drop somebody else on his lunch.
01:01:38.363 --> 01:01:50.270
[SPEAKER_04]: The guy who got Hubbard not a big deal, but there were two or three teams that could have used a Chuba Hubbard and they just said, no, and they were like, and just one guy's keeping Jared Goff.
01:01:50.671 --> 01:01:56.835
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, Jared Goff perfectly fine, but in a league where passing touchdowns are four points and not six,
01:01:58.387 --> 01:02:00.189
[SPEAKER_04]: But he's worthless almost.
01:02:00.349 --> 01:02:01.751
[SPEAKER_04]: You don't keep Jared Goff.
01:02:02.472 --> 01:02:05.795
[SPEAKER_04]: And so like, there were like three or four teams that could have used a Hubbard.
01:02:06.156 --> 01:02:08.278
[SPEAKER_04]: And then some other guy in the league was able to trade Aaron Jones.
01:02:08.298 --> 01:02:09.559
[SPEAKER_04]: Who's not even near what Chewbe Hubbard is right now.
01:02:09.580 --> 01:02:10.761
[SPEAKER_04]: Was able to trade Aaron Jones for a pick.
01:02:10.781 --> 01:02:17.168
[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you,
01:02:17.388 --> 01:02:18.669
[SPEAKER_04]: You value Aaron Jones.
01:02:18.709 --> 01:02:21.851
[SPEAKER_04]: He's gonna split all of his back failed with Jordan Mason this year.
01:02:22.211 --> 01:02:25.774
[SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, that's some just nerdy fantasy football shit.
01:02:26.474 --> 01:02:39.903
[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of sharps in that league and there's a lot of people who are kind of like, and this is, this is just fun or whatever, and the people who are like, this is just fun, get taken advantage of, and I can't ever seem to take advantage of them.
01:02:44.474 --> 01:02:49.417
[SPEAKER_02]: I do love that Bellachick got rocked on his first game out at North Carolina.
01:02:49.537 --> 01:02:50.177
[SPEAKER_02]: I do love that.
01:02:50.358 --> 01:02:50.678
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
01:02:51.178 --> 01:02:51.558
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
01:02:51.638 --> 01:02:52.979
[SPEAKER_02]: It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
01:02:52.999 --> 01:03:05.827
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't, I can understand that to me, to me hiring Bill Bellachick at this age, it's kind of like, again, going back to fantasy football, it's like,
01:03:06.587 --> 01:03:10.930
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like picking up Frank Gore or somebody like Frank Gore's not in the league anymore.
01:03:10.970 --> 01:03:11.711
[SPEAKER_04]: His son is.
01:03:12.491 --> 01:03:18.776
[SPEAKER_04]: But like Frank Gore, when he was in his 30s or whatever, people were like, oh Frank Gore, I know that name.
01:03:19.377 --> 01:03:25.581
[SPEAKER_04]: And they pick him up and they put him in their line up and it's like, Frank Gore is not what he was when he was in his 20s, guys.
01:03:25.701 --> 01:03:26.782
[SPEAKER_04]: And Bill Balichick.
01:03:29.264 --> 01:03:29.944
[SPEAKER_04]: What are you expecting?
01:03:29.964 --> 01:03:30.805
[SPEAKER_04]: What are you expecting?
01:03:31.125 --> 01:03:33.287
[SPEAKER_04]: At North Carolina with Bill Balichick.
01:03:34.462 --> 01:03:36.145
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's talk about Aaron when he's going on.
01:03:36.245 --> 01:03:36.987
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, he's still here.
01:03:37.027 --> 01:03:37.267
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
01:03:37.728 --> 01:03:43.478
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I thought he was going to leave his face.
01:03:43.598 --> 01:03:47.225
[SPEAKER_03]: So I have an observation I'd like to make.
01:03:48.228 --> 01:03:48.368
[SPEAKER_05]: Uh-huh.
01:03:49.008 --> 01:03:57.170
[SPEAKER_03]: We uh, we have entered an era where gimmicky internet interviews shows are annoying me.
01:03:58.070 --> 01:03:58.390
[SPEAKER_03]: All right.
01:03:58.410 --> 01:04:11.073
[SPEAKER_03]: So we started, I'm going to say we started with hot ones, right, where the gimmick was a famous person eats increasingly hotter chicken wings while they're being interviewed by a guy whose reputation is to be a pretty good interviewer.
01:04:11.953 --> 01:04:13.154
[SPEAKER_03]: Right, and I'm fine with that.
01:04:13.394 --> 01:04:26.178
[SPEAKER_03]: There have been some very entertaining clips of that show that I've seen particularly Conan O'Brien Went for it with gusto, so then another one I've seen crop up in the last year or two is the chicken check
01:04:26.858 --> 01:04:38.083
[SPEAKER_03]: chat or chicken shop girl, just a blots of blonde girl, she's very flirty, with all everybody she interviews and they're in a chicken shop eating.
01:04:38.264 --> 01:04:39.264
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, chicken.
01:04:39.344 --> 01:04:40.565
[SPEAKER_04]: I have not seen this.
01:04:40.985 --> 01:04:52.911
[SPEAKER_03]: So last week I saw a new one and I actually got angry because it was it was James gun and somebody else from Superman and they're lying in coffins
01:04:57.693 --> 01:05:02.495
[SPEAKER_03]: interviewing each other and the series is called grave conversations.
01:05:03.535 --> 01:05:09.497
[SPEAKER_03]: And I went on a 30-minute rant to my wife about that that's not even that's not even a good pun.
01:05:09.997 --> 01:05:15.279
[SPEAKER_03]: Like if you want grave conversations to be the name of your interview show go to a cemetery.
01:05:16.099 --> 01:05:16.680
[SPEAKER_03]: No, yeah.
01:05:16.880 --> 01:05:18.840
[SPEAKER_03]: Not an on a half open coffin.
01:05:18.860 --> 01:05:23.102
[SPEAKER_03]: Like so we've gone from hot ones, which is actually I used to joke.
01:05:23.947 --> 01:05:26.208
[SPEAKER_03]: that I should do sour ones, right?
01:05:26.288 --> 01:05:30.711
[SPEAKER_03]: And just feed celebrity's sour shit, make faces, be the same thing.
01:05:30.751 --> 01:05:32.311
[SPEAKER_03]: But at least hot ones was original.
01:05:32.351 --> 01:05:33.912
[SPEAKER_03]: It was the first one to come along.
01:05:33.952 --> 01:05:36.093
[SPEAKER_03]: And now we're like, whoa, here's a word.
01:05:36.474 --> 01:05:37.694
[SPEAKER_03]: It's punny with this other word.
01:05:38.054 --> 01:05:41.276
[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll come put them in the situation and give them two cards to talk to each other.
01:05:41.356 --> 01:05:44.818
[SPEAKER_03]: And now it's like on the regular PR cycle.
01:05:45.138 --> 01:05:47.159
[SPEAKER_03]: Like hot ones, it annoys me.
01:05:47.179 --> 01:05:48.280
[SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm.
01:05:48.300 --> 01:05:48.540
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.
01:05:49.000 --> 01:05:49.920
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
01:05:52.282 --> 01:06:10.233
[SPEAKER_00]: I had a segment brewing when I was doing a show and the celebrity topic of conversation would be that t-shirt that you just, you know, couldn't let go of your favorite t-shirt, you know, from childhood or adolescent or college or whatever.
01:06:10.913 --> 01:06:27.118
[SPEAKER_03]: and the segment was going to be called shirt happens and it just never never got off the ground but that's still a lot that's so much better though like I mean I'm not surprised that you would have something better in your pocket then grave conversation with putting me tough and so good
01:06:28.402 --> 01:06:30.944
[SPEAKER_01]: It'll be weird, it'll be weird, because it's shit in the coffin.
01:06:31.884 --> 01:06:44.912
[SPEAKER_04]: We have shallow grave conversations where it's like, it's like the conversations that we have a really shallow or it's just a whole podcast about the movie, shallow grave.
01:06:44.932 --> 01:06:50.316
[SPEAKER_03]: Or you're in a dug unused grave, you're in an actual grave hole.
01:06:52.397 --> 01:07:06.022
[SPEAKER_04]: a shallow conversation about something like your favorite soft drink flavors right like and you know the the consequences of fame and and like people recognize and you want the street and stuff
01:07:09.396 --> 01:07:16.079
[SPEAKER_04]: Conan kind of, I don't know, I feel like Conan almost destroyed hot ones with how good he was on him.
01:07:16.199 --> 01:07:24.403
[SPEAKER_03]: He was so, I've never seen anyone that gung ho, and it was clear he was suffering, but he was not going to stop the act.
01:07:24.463 --> 01:07:26.664
[SPEAKER_03]: He was just gonna keep powering through.
01:07:26.724 --> 01:07:29.905
[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of my favorite things about him is that he'd commits to the bit so hard.
01:07:30.986 --> 01:07:47.842
[SPEAKER_04]: It's basically the inbox because everybody after that is, you know, we're back to the old like, oh, this isn't all that bad and then like then like they eat something and there's always it's always the same reaction when people can't handle the hot food or whatever it's always like
01:07:48.402 --> 01:08:05.848
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh my god, you know, just that they're trying to keep it together and, and, and, you know, oh, well, you know, please kill me right now or some, you know, just nonsense or whatever and it's just, it's just not nearly as interesting because they just can't, you know, you can't, can't top the cone and one anymore.
01:08:05.868 --> 01:08:09.333
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't have a hot, I have a hot chicken joke in my recap of my book.
01:08:11.917 --> 01:08:12.498
[SPEAKER_02]: Very well.
