Build A Life You Love In An Entertaining Way

I'm George Beesley, the founder and host of the We Need More Heroes Podcast.

The podcast aims to inspire and guide listeners to live better. The first season 'What can we learn from adventure' interviews some of the worlds most exciting professional adventurers.

We've had the likes of Erik Weihenmayer on - the first blind man to summit Mount Everest as well as the highest 6 summits on all the continents. And also climbing legend Conrad Anker featured in the recent hit film Meru (watch it right now if you haven't already). As well as loads of other amazing guests like Sean Conway, Benedict Allen, Pip Stewart, etc.

We have all sorts of listeners male, female, young, old, and everything in between!

I started this podcast to inspire people to make the most of their lives and to give them some guidance on how to do that.

I personally listen to a lot of podcast and found it a great medium to help me grow in an entertaining way.

My initial goals were to try to reach people feeling stuck in a rut and give them a burst of kick up the backside inspiration.

I started the podcast in 2017. It took me a good few months to release the first episode because I wanted to have a bank of 6 before releasing the first.

I'm currently cycling from Alaska to Argentina which makes it hard to release regular episodes but I'm still podcasting along the way. I aim for 1 per month.

Recently I've assembled a great team who are great at helping out with the podcast which means I can continue to travel and podcast. Right now it probably still takes me about 10-15 hours per episode - arranging the episode, prep, the interview, correspondance with team, checking edits, uploading, etc.

The podcast is self funded.

We do have some sponsors for the show but they just give us gear to test on our cycling trip, not cash. This made it far easier to secure sponsorship but gives the show a more professional feel (arguably...some people dislike any sponsorship but the show is free so 10 seconds of purely listing a sponsors name doesn't seem unreasonable).

The main benefits are that I really enjoy the process and get to connect with incredible people. I also get lots of wonderful feedback on the show.

Back home I was using two ATR2100's the Zoom H4N my mac and Adobe Audition. On the road I have just swapped the mic for either the internal mic on the Zoom or any mic I can find.

My team are great guest finders - shout out to Cody and Rachel! They guys come up with great suggestions and arrange the interviews.

I prepare for each episode by doing a basic google search - reading the guests website, social media, and recent articles, then check YouTube for any interesting interviews.

I do most by Skype now using Ecamm recorder.

Listeners find our show through all the usual channels iTunes, PlayerFM, Google.

We try to remain as active on social media as possible but given we're travelling now aim to spend as little time sitting on the laptop as possible. The show alone already takes up a lot of time. After the trip we will increase the time we spend on this

Try to find a good resource to walk you through the initial stages - google the best podcast start up guide, ask people who already have a podcast, etc. It will save you time rather than trying to do it piecemeal.

Approach less well known guests first (unless you already have a connection) then build from there. It's hard to get the heavy weights on in the early days.

Only start if you are really willing to commit to it. It's much more work than you imagine and it's better to spend your time elsewhere unless you're really going to do it!
