Speaker 1: It's camp.
00:00:00
Speaker 2: I am six forty and you're listening to The Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
00:00:14
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, Jim, but a TD show.
00:00:29
Speaker 4: My favorite shows growing up, Fine, Fine man, the memories that come back from.
00:00:48
Speaker 5: That Art Race, Starry, Larry Wilcom and Baker and Get the Good Thing, Eric Strata.
00:01:03
Speaker 3: I can't buy AM six forty. It is the Conway Show. Before we get Tom on the phone here, let's talk to Robert Pine. He is with us from ships. Robert, how are you, sir?
00:01:13
Speaker 6: I am very well and thank you for having me on, Buddy.
00:01:17
Speaker 3: I can't tell you how many times I was sitting in my house watching that show. I would have to get home because you know, that was before VCRs, before you could tape anything. You had to get home to watch it. And I love that show. I was wondering, can you imagine how many guys and gals became police officers just because they watched that show. I'll bet that number is astronomical.
00:01:38
Speaker 1: It probably is.
00:01:40
Speaker 6: I go to these comic com things, you know, and we sign autographs and stuff like that. A lot of people coming through day I got into law enforcement because of your show, So I said, and some of them were retired. The ones are still active. I said, just do me a favor. Watch yourself out there. Be careful, because something happens to you, I'm gonna feel responsible exactly. Yeah.
00:02:09
Speaker 3: They put a lot of burden on your shoulders.
00:02:11
Speaker 6: Oh boy.
00:02:12
Speaker 1: Yeah. And to earn my money. Boy, that is great.
00:02:16
Speaker 3: I really enjoyed that. I know you coming on to talk with Tom Shy bushes with us as well.
00:02:21
Speaker 1: Tommy, are you there, bub Yes, I am.
00:02:24
Speaker 3: Okay. We're talking about the March of Dimes, the event in Victorville. And Tom, this is your fiftieth March of Dimes.
00:02:32
Speaker 7: Yes it is. And and Tim, thank you for having me today. Cafes played a little bit of a role in the history of my marching. I'm so I'm thrilled to be I will tell you, Oh.
00:02:43
Speaker 3: Is that right? What kind of role did we play? Is it insignificant?
00:02:49
Speaker 7: Loman and Barkley forty seven years ago, Wow, help me, Ray, I was trying to raise thirty seven dollars for the marching arms to meet the mayor of Covina. Omen To Barkley came up at a Brinks armored truck and delivered forty thousand dollars in dimes.
00:03:05
Speaker 3: Oh my god, what a great radio.
00:03:08
Speaker 7: The gentleman that made that happen was Skip you on from the Aussie and Harriet Show. He was our uncle DJ and he was friends with Roman and Barkley and they were the Southern California chairman. Oh okay, my dad drove me down to your station and I was on and the Camfi listeners responded to a kid trying to have people send me in the roll of dimes.
00:03:28
Speaker 3: Oh, that is unbelievable. How did Robert, how did you get involved with with Tom and the marcha Dimes?
00:03:38
Speaker 6: Well, I they I had a manager and they called a Tom called the manager and wanted me to be the.
00:03:47
Speaker 1: What do you call it? The a parade?
00:03:52
Speaker 3: Oh, the Grand Marshall, the.
00:03:54
Speaker 1: Grand Marshal, thank you, And that's how I met him.
00:03:59
Speaker 6: And uh, he's asked me to consequently to come up and help him with the March of Times. And then we have a Christmas thing, uh in coordination with the California Highway Patrol, and we have a we raise money and get gifts for the unfortunate kids who don't Wow, Christmas would be a lot less without I think what we try to do so. The moment I met Tom, I knew he was a He was a great guy. He's done so much good work for people in the High Desert. And I keep saying they should make a new thing and make him the ambassador.
00:04:54
Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah, but nobody's pick take me up.
00:05:02
Speaker 6: Now.
00:05:03
Speaker 1: It's great. And Tom, how old were you when you started this?
00:05:08
Speaker 7: I was thirteen years old.
00:05:10
Speaker 6: I'm thirteen years old. Okay, it makes you sixty three. I was wondering about it.
00:05:15
Speaker 3: Yeah. And Tom, you've had you've had your certainly your challenges in life. You had about fourteen surgeries.
00:05:23
Speaker 7: Yes, I was Yeah, I have cerebral palsy and I was born at one pound two ounces.
00:05:29
Speaker 8: Wow.
00:05:29
Speaker 7: And so my friend down the street came up with a marchand im sponsor sheet and said, I think you might like to do this. And so you get it because you're in the press of your help. But the local publisher of the newspaper had a staff put me in the newspaper and tell a story about a kid that's not supposed to be able to walk. And I was walking twenty miles. So they followed me every step of the way. And so sixteen, the first sixteen years, my walk was twenty miles and twenty long miles. So now it's Robert and I are gonna walk about twenty five steps one way and twenty five steps the other way. We're just enjoy today.
00:06:10
Speaker 3: I get it, and it's gonna be Uh, it's gonna be tomorrow. I'm sorry, ahead, Robert.
00:06:15
Speaker 6: I was just gonna say, with the disability that tom has, he's never taken advantage of that. He doesn't have one of those things in your car where he can park in special. I've never seen him without a smile on his face, no matter how much he's hurting or whatever. And he's a man to be admired for what he does, for the Hye desert and the challenges, the physical challenges he goes through. So's he's a stand up guy.
00:06:53
Speaker 3: You know. I had a slight fracture in my pinky, uh you know, so small they could even see it on on a on an X ray. But I asked the doctor if I could get one of those placards and he said no. So I respect you, Tommy.
00:07:09
Speaker 1: You gotta try.
00:07:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, you got at least give it an effort. What the hell, all right? So this whole thing is going to be tomorrow May ninth, at Victor Valley College in Victorville. We got a huge audience by the way up there. Can I find a lot of listeners up there, celebrating the fiftieth year. Yeah, it's gonna be eight a m. And that is that near the lake, you guys starting near the lake?
00:07:34
Speaker 7: Yeah, well, and right in the middle of the college campus. They have a little bit of a lake and it's about a quarter of a mile to encircle the campus. And so we're we have a nice concrete stage sound system and uh and for our listeners at least until.
00:07:50
Speaker 6: We run out.
00:07:51
Speaker 7: But you know, even Tony cops like donuts, so uh So the first time I did with the radio station up here, the first time we talked about it, phony cops like donuts, and everybody met me at the donut shop to say hi to Larry and Robert, and we raised a lot of money on those donuts.
00:08:13
Speaker 3: So that's great, that's fantastic. Well, so, Robert, are you going to be up there tomorrow in Victorville.
00:08:20
Speaker 1: Absolutely, I'm leaving here at seven thirty.
00:08:24
Speaker 6: So the traffic shouldn't be so bad. Sometimes it's terrible I'll be up there when I'm up there, but yeah, I sure will.
00:08:34
Speaker 3: I'm with you. That's going to be a huge event. It all starts. It's the High Desert March for Babies is what they call it. And it takes place tomorrow May ninth at Victor Valley College and that's in Victorville, celebrating fiftieth year. It starts at eight o'clock in the morning and it goes on till noon at the Victor Valley College Lake, which is right, as Tom said, right in the middle of that campus. And Robert Pine will be there so you can go up and chat with him about Chips and the four hundred You guys did four hundred of those.
00:09:10
Speaker 6: Episodes we did well, yeah about that we were out six years.
00:09:17
Speaker 1: Oh, I say, yeah, so yeah we did. We sure did a lot of them.
00:09:23
Speaker 6: And it's amazing the last three powers. As as I said, I'd go to these comic tons and my gosh, the people that are lining up there to meet us and everything. If you told me fifty years ago, because it'll be fifty years next year since we started, wow, this would still be a big deal. I'd say, you're.
00:09:48
Speaker 3: Out of your mind, you know. It was one of my favorite shows growing up. And I remember I think it all started like in nineteen seventy six, seventy seven, somewhere around there, and I was young. I was okay, so I was, you know, fourteen, But I remember in season three, the first episode in season three, the the a story was someone's stealing plants off the shoulders of the freeway, and I thought, oh, this series isn't gonna last long.
00:10:21
Speaker 1: But it did.
00:10:24
Speaker 3: Go ahead. Yeah, but it lasted a long time. I'm really glad that you got involved with it, Robert, and that you stayed with it, and you really helped not only you know, people to become highway patrol officers, but with this March of Dimes, it is perfect. It goes perfect with your character in Chips, you know, just a really solid guy off the air and on the air.
00:10:47
Speaker 6: Yeah, well it's I try. Tom keeps thanking me for for doing this and whatever.
00:10:55
Speaker 1: I said. You know, it's so easy. All I got to do is show up.
00:11:00
Speaker 6: I'm being sort of recognizable, and I mean, why wouldn't you do that?
00:11:06
Speaker 3: That's right exactly. We'll keep promoting it for the rest of the evening. I really appreciate you coming on. Robert, very nice to meet you, and Tom nice meeting you, and congratulations. We'll keep that banging this out for you.
00:11:19
Speaker 1: Thank you very so much.
00:11:24
Speaker 3: Ah, that's great, all right, thanks fellows. I appreciate that. All right, Get on up to I'm Victorville tomorrow eight am Victor Valley College and go meet Robert Pine. And Tom shy Bush will be up there as well. And that's a really good deal. Fiftieth March of Dimes event in Victorville, and Tom's been to every one of them, every one after fourteen surgeries, body cast braces years of therapy and he keeps going. So if you live in Victorville, that's gonna be the place to go Tomorrow, May ninth, eight am, Victor Valley College in Victorville. That's great. What a sweet man that is. Robert Pine.
00:12:00
Speaker 8: You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI AM six forty.
00:12:06
Speaker 3: Let me just take a second here to talk about Robert Pine. Robert Pine got involved with Tom shy Bush and this March of Dimes decades ago, decades ago, and when Robert Pine was much younger. Robert Pine was born before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He's eighty eighty five. I think this year eighty five years old. And George Carlin used to say, men who live long, eighty to ninety is not a good decade for men. They fall apart. And Robert Pine could have said, I'm eighty five, I don't feel great. I'll gladly lend you my voice for this event, but it's a struggle for me to get around. And he didn't. He's driving all the way up to Victorville tomorrow for the fiftieth anniversary of the fiftieth March of Dimes event in Victorville. That is a great man. He could have easily used his age or whatever, you know, health is conditioned, whatever condition he's currently in. He could have easily said, hey, I can't get there. And he didn't do that. What a sweet man that is. And he's eighty five and as you heard, still has a tremendous sense of humor, which is also very tough because you remember when your dad or your grandfather was eighty five, angry as hell all the time, just you know, always at one hundred out of one hundred all the time, always pissed, always shutting down, always yelling, always swearing. Guys get angry as they get older. And Robert Pine, one of the sweetest men in the world, is going up to Victorville tomorrow, and so if you live in Victorville, you may want to go out and thank him for that. Yeah, you know, March of Dimes. They got a great winner in Robert Pine. So it'll be tomorrow at eight am Victor Valley College in Victorville. They're celebrating their fiftieth year and it's going to be at the again, Victor Valley College at the Lake. There's a lake right in the middle of that university or that college, and they'll be there at eight am until noon. So if you live out in that area and you want to meet Tom Shybush, he'll be out there his fiftieth March of Dimes. He's been a big fan of kfive his whole life. And Robert Pine will be there as well.
00:14:45
Speaker 9: And Larry Wilcox.
00:14:47
Speaker 3: Going to yes, wow, yeah, the whole reunion pretty cool.
00:14:51
Speaker 6: Huh.
00:14:52
Speaker 9: Yeah, he's been a part of it as well for a real long time, wasn't he?
00:14:55
Speaker 3: Was he Baker?
00:14:56
Speaker 9: John Baker, Yeah, John Baker. And also two fun facts about Robert Pine. He was in the Apple Dumpling Gang rides again.
00:15:06
Speaker 3: Well, that's right, that's right.
00:15:07
Speaker 9: And his son is Chris Pine, who was a huge movie star.
00:15:11
Speaker 3: Well, I didn't know that Chris Pine was his kid. Yeah, that got's huge.
00:15:16
Speaker 10: He's huge.
00:15:16
Speaker 3: Oh that's sensational.
00:15:18
Speaker 7: Is cool.
00:15:19
Speaker 3: He's got a great dad, you know. I mean, that's that's a solid human being. But can you imagine. I love his response when I said, you know, there must be thousands of CHP officers, both men and women, who got into it, or maybe not even CHP, just law enforcement because of you, And he said, he always has the same response, please be careful out there. I don't want that. I don't want you to get in any accident or get shot. And then I it's my you know, my my fault. So please be careful out there. That's a great response. That's that's really cool. So get on out there tomorrow, High Desert March of Dimes for Babies. It takes place tomorrow eight am Victor Valley College in Victorville. All right, we're live on kf I am six forty. We'll come back. We'll talk a little bit about the weather because it is Mother's Day, and maybe you're going out and you want to know if it's gonna be hotter in hell on Mother's Day. We're not gonna do two hours of it, but we're gonna tell you to give you a brief, you know, rundown of what you'd be looking at this weekend for Mother's Day, which is the day after tomorrow.
00:16:24
Speaker 8: You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI AM six forty.
00:16:31
Speaker 3: Hey, belly, Oh, you know what, how about this as a coincidence? Can you remember the show that I always refer to, or the episode of the Middle where I talk about, you know, Frankie. The mom wakes up when Mother's Day and she says, I don't want to do anything for Mother's Day. Yeah, and then Mike, her husband's, like, oh, I'm gonna stay on high alert. Yes, anytime mom says I don't want anything from Mother's Day, it's it costs a lot more and a lot more involvement, ma'am, I'm gonna stay on high alert. Well, you know who was also in that episode, Robert Pine? Oh he was, Yeah, he played mister Travers in that episode.
00:17:08
Speaker 10: Oh, I have to go back and look at that.
00:17:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's right it's right, but I, uh, yeah, mom says I don't want to do anything for Mother's Day. It instantly became twelve times more complicated. Yeah, and stay on high alert.
00:17:23
Speaker 9: Hey, did you drive when you were a limo driver? Did you drive Robert Pine or Larry Wilcox.
00:17:28
Speaker 3: I think I drove Larry Wilcox. Oh, okay, I don't think I drove Robert Pine. I think it was Larry Wilcox.
00:17:34
Speaker 1: I drove.
00:17:35
Speaker 3: He used to live over. I guess I shouldn't say where he lived because maybe he still lives there. Yeah, and so I don't do that. But very very nice man. A lot of nice guys came out of that show Chips. Although I'll tell you an Eric Estrada story. We were I was in Hawaii with my dad and my brothers. My sister is a family trip now you and we were staying in a place called the Kaha Hilton, and my dad's sitting on the beach and a guy comes over and sits next to him, and it's Eric E. Stratta and it's my dad. Talked to him for you know, half hour, forty five minutes. He was a punch on Chips and Eric Estrada goes, eh, you know, I'm wearing a hat, but it's really difficult to uh, you know, to walk around because people swarm you and they recognize you all the time, even on vacation. You know, it's it's hard to you know, just sit on the beach and enjoy your family and relax without people coming up and talking to you. And my dad was like, oh, well, you know, that really never bothered me. You know, I think those reason why we're here at the beach is because of people like that, and and he says yea, he says, but you know, when you're on vacation, you just want to keep a low profile. So about twenty five minutes later, there's a little peninsula that goes out at the call of Hilton, and Eric Astrada is at the end of it, and he yells to his life like a manager assistant, Hey, I need some more ice tea out here.
00:19:04
Speaker 11: And everybody at the beach look turns yeah. Yeah, everybody, thousand people on the beach turned to see who just.
00:19:16
Speaker 3: Did that.
00:19:18
Speaker 10: Wait to keep a little profile.
00:19:20
Speaker 3: And my dad looks out and goes, yeah, that's uh, that's that's exactly how you do that. Yeah, mix in with the crowd. They'll never notice you. It's fantastic, all right. Let's get it a little bit of weather here. It's going to get hot for Mother's Day. Let's find out who's going to be sweating you, Mom or both.
00:19:41
Speaker 12: We've been tracking this area of high pressure which is part of the Pacific High, and that high is going to be stronger and stronger over the next forty eight hour period.
00:19:50
Speaker 3: Oh no sweating Mom on Mother's Day, and.
00:19:53
Speaker 12: The sinking air will generate a secondary center of the high that happens on Sunday, aftern and Monday.
00:20:00
Speaker 13: And when that happens, the temperatures are going to jump way up. Now the high itself is moving, so it's not gonna stay there very long. As a matter of fact, we'll start cooling off once we get into Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Another lovely night across so Keels and I will say generally in the fifties, raine layer clouds coming up through Huntington Beach. It'll be cloudy and or vine tomorrow morning fifty seven, and then we'll start to see those temperatures out there in the interior areas up around ninety one degrees. That's for San Bernadino for your Saturday afternoon Paul Springs getting up at one o four. So some of these temperatures in the desert areas are looking like something that you would see maybe in July, so a little bit warmer.
00:20:40
Speaker 3: Okay, So it's gonna be hot Saturdays, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Sunday and Monday and then Tuesday it's it's going to go back down normal. All right, that's cool. I mean, you know, so if you're gonna take mom out for Mother's Day, I know the Dodgers are playing on Sundays, so maybe take mom out to enjoy a Dodgers game. Bring a short sleeve shirt and shorts because it's gonna be warm out there at Dodge Day all.
00:21:06
Speaker 10: I know another place, so it would be great to take mom on Mother's.
00:21:10
Speaker 3: Day Old Marongo, Yes, yes, spot, yeah, I think.
00:21:16
Speaker 10: That casita that's right, her own plunge pool.
00:21:20
Speaker 3: That's right. And give her some champagne and wine in the morning so she'll pass out and you can hit the tables by about two.
00:21:25
Speaker 10: That's right.
00:21:27
Speaker 3: Where it sounds like you're going to be somewhere with your leisure wear.
00:21:31
Speaker 10: That's right. I am the Sunset Beach Art Festival. It's both Saturday and Sunday and Sunset Beach. It's just north of Seal Beach South south, Okay, it's south of Seal Beach.
00:21:51
Speaker 3: It's exactly the opposite.
00:21:57
Speaker 10: Yeah, south.
00:21:58
Speaker 4: I was.
00:21:58
Speaker 10: I was sitting on my looking at the map.
00:22:01
Speaker 3: Okay, and that's gonna be right on the beach.
00:22:04
Speaker 6: Hun.
00:22:05
Speaker 10: Yeah, Pacific Avenue right around Seventeenth Street. It goes in both directions, but Pacific and Seventeenth that's right in the ballpark of where it's at. And both Saturday and Sunday.
00:22:16
Speaker 3: I saw them Sunday setting up big tents on the beach. So there's gonna be some coverage there in case you're going out there and it's ninety five degrees. They'll have some shape.
00:22:24
Speaker 10: Oh thank goodness. Yeah, they've got right on Pacific Avenue. It's nice. It's a nice tree lined street as well, so it'll and you got that great ocean breeze so you'll be fine.
00:22:36
Speaker 1: Yeah.
00:22:36
Speaker 3: And the nearest parking lot is in Sampedro, so you may want to take an uber.
00:22:44
Speaker 10: And slight down there if you. If you need to, they have parking set up and sheds and everything.
00:22:50
Speaker 3: Yeah, excellent, no walking, except for what time do you have to be out there?
00:22:55
Speaker 10: Oh, nine in the morning.
00:22:57
Speaker 3: It starts at nine, but what time you get there?
00:22:59
Speaker 10: Like it's oh yeah, I mean I'll be there the first day around seven setting up. You got to roll in around eight the second day.
00:23:08
Speaker 3: So it's just it's both days.
00:23:10
Speaker 10: Both days, Saturday and Sunday.
00:23:12
Speaker 3: Yes, are you? Are you gonna sorry?
00:23:18
Speaker 10: Sounds like so much fun.
00:23:20
Speaker 3: Yay, it does sound like a nightmare. We got to get you a pension, baby, or a lottery ticket or something. You know, you're working seven days a week.
00:23:32
Speaker 10: Sometimes I do. It's it's sandal season, come on.
00:23:35
Speaker 3: All right, all right, it's a busy. But we got to get a lad with a pension, and you know, I mean, seriously, you got to stop with these sandals. You gotta you gotta get you know, a lottery or something. Roll the ladies out there their pensions too. Yeah, I know. But I'm not sure that she's there yet.
00:23:56
Speaker 10: Yeah, that's I'm still on the other team. She'll stay on high alert.
00:24:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, but look, it's a long life. You never know if you can.
00:24:06
Speaker 10: It's a long life.
00:24:07
Speaker 1: It is.
00:24:07
Speaker 3: You never know what you're gonna meet eyes with somebody and go like, there's a woman in who owns a there's a woman who owns a shop in Burbank, heterosexual, a whole life, married to a man, playing tennis with another couple, lock's eyes with the woman on the other team. The couple on the other team both got divorced and married six months later. That's wid Neither one of them ever even thought that they were had lesbian tendancies. So I'm saying, it's a long life. And they just knew, Yeah, they knew. They knew that they were going to spend the rest of their lives together. And they sort of said it to each other like on the tennis court, like, hey, you know, but I don't want to flip you out, but I think we're supposed to spend the rest of our lives together. And the other lady goes, I think you're right. How great? Great is that? Sounds like a Hallmark movie, Fellio, Who can hallmark that?
00:25:00
Speaker 1: Huh?
00:25:02
Speaker 7: No?
00:25:03
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, and belly are shut down. There's always a complication later on, come on, come on, think about it. Well, Hallmark's not there yet. They're not doing it. They're not doing those Christmas music about movies about lesbians or gay guys.
00:25:23
Speaker 9: No, don't get that I'm aware of.
00:25:24
Speaker 3: Don't get there.
00:25:25
Speaker 10: I think they are they well, I guess maybe they are.
00:25:28
Speaker 3: Yeah, think about it. Belly sells herself as a big fan of this channel to get blankets and coffee cups from the Hallmark channel, and it's never looked at it.
00:25:40
Speaker 8: No I have.
00:25:40
Speaker 9: I just didn't connect the dots, I see.
00:25:44
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, So Saturday and Sunday sunset beach, go out and see Angel. And please, guys, go out there. If you've got a radical pension, please rescue her from these events and for me having to promote this crap. So let's get out there, all right, Angel, Thanks, Okay, all right, we're alive. I know, I know it's time to take a break. It's time to take a break. I think from radio.
00:26:12
Speaker 8: You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI Am sixty.
00:26:18
Speaker 3: It is Friday, the eve Friday before Mother's Day. Mother's Day is this Sunday. So get out and treat mom right, and you know, lay some stuff on her flowers, maybe a trip to Marongo for the day. And then you got you don't do anything for another year. But you gotta treat her right. You gotta treat mom right. She put up a lot when you were a baby. All right, Price is Right? A new record set for the highest single game win on the Price is Right. Let's find out how much this guy or gal took home.
00:26:54
Speaker 14: This is right, one retired veteran. It made daytime TV history.

00:27:24
Speaker 3: Vanessa hit the jackpop playing the Lions Share.
00:27:27
Speaker 13: That's the new high stakes game creating through a partnership with bet MGM.
00:27:31
Speaker 14: After correctly guessing grocery prices to earn five balls, she risked it all through every round, ultimately revealing two hundred and twenty seven thousand, five hundred dollars in cash a plus a luxury.
00:27:43
Speaker 3: Oh, this is cash, so this is not you know, winning a car and a boat and a trip. We have to sell all that stuff to get money. She won cash.

00:27:53
Speaker 3: Wait, how much did you win in cash?
00:27:55
Speaker 14: Your hold on, ultimately revealing two hundred and twenty seven thousand, five hundred dollars in cash.
00:28:00
Speaker 3: Wow, almost two undred twenty eight thousand dollars in.
00:28:03
Speaker 14: Cash plus a luxury trip for two to Morocco that was worth more than twelve thousand dollars. Her daughter cheering from the audience made the emotional win even sweeter.
00:28:13
Speaker 3: And how soon before the local guys break into her house and it's their cash. So look, they got her picture. They know how much money she won. Now she's got to put a bars and get guns and alarms and dogs and lights and bushes and the whole run. So congratulations, But it ain't what it used to be. You know, before you could win and spend the money, your neighbor would be happy about it. Now they want it. They want the cash, all right. Let's talk to or not talk to it. Listen to Norm Langer, he owns Langer's Deli right out near MacArthur Park. I heard somebody on the station use that term today, mcgar ear. Did you really Yeah, it was a male.
00:29:05
Speaker 15: Wow.
00:29:06
Speaker 1: Wow.
00:29:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, and he has his own show. Woh and he is he's not on in mornings Yick's in a way figure that out. Yeah.
00:29:16
Speaker 16: MacArthur Park Historic MacArthur Park Lake, a sprawling landmark in Ellie's Westlake neighborhood, once known for its picturesque views and cultural significance.
00:29:27
Speaker 3: It was beautiful. MacArthur Park was absolutely stunning back in the nineteen forties, fifties, sixties. Families were there, people with top hats, you know, women with long dresses and umbrellas to keep the son out of their their hair and their eyes. Horses. And now it's just people bent over because they've taken way too many drugs.
00:29:53
Speaker 16: But that's changed. Almost every area of the park covered with used syringes.
00:29:58
Speaker 3: Oh my, well, you know why they're Every enter the park is covered by syringes because they give them out for free. They give a free syringes.
00:30:05
Speaker 17: I just want to bring they able to have people bringing their kids back to the park.
00:30:11
Speaker 6: Sew.
00:30:11
Speaker 3: I thought that was a woman screaming park.
00:30:14
Speaker 6: Bang.
00:30:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, shot, Sean, that's a siren.
00:30:21
Speaker 16: Sean, a former drug dealer who doesn't want to reveal his identity, lives in MacArthur Park and talk to us about.
00:30:26
Speaker 3: The k She nailed it, she nailed with MacArthur doesn't.
00:30:29
Speaker 16: Want to reveal his identity, lives in MacArthur Park, and talk to us about the rampant drug use and sales it triggered yesterday's large scale law enforcement operation that led to numerous arrests.
00:30:39
Speaker 3: Okay, MacArthur Park has been like that probably, I would say thirty five years, forty years. I used to work down there in the late nineties and it absolutely was a hell hole back then. And that's thirty years ago, so maybe forty forty five years ago. So here's the question. Why did it take the FEDS to come in and clean it up, or at least to start cleaning it up. Why didn't the mayor do it and not just this mayor any mayor or any you know, police chief before before Jim McDonald, he's the one that had to do it. Why didn't the FEDS or LAPD before Jim McDonald do it? Why did we wait so long?
00:31:20
Speaker 16: Business owners say the drug epidemic is fueled by a city led needle distribution program around the park.
00:31:26
Speaker 3: Look, I think you can do drugs, you know you can. You know smoke weed. I don't. I don't know if I think when you get into blow that's dangerous. But you can get into this, you can get you can lose your edge and get buzzed. I think it's when you get into needles that a lot of alarms go off when you're putting a needle into your arm.
00:31:46
Speaker 15: And they wanted to end all we are doing by giving out.
00:31:49
Speaker 3: Okay, this is this is Langer himself. It's name nor Norm Langer. This is the guy who owns that deli and when he opened up is a beautiful area and now it's like, you know, he's on Mars.
00:32:02
Speaker 15: And they wanted to end all we are doing by giving out Needles is number one attracting more people that we didn't have before, and number two fighting a never ending battle of helping people shoot up.
00:32:14
Speaker 17: I don't seen people who do you do use a needle shoot up, whatever the term may be, that's.
00:32:23
Speaker 3: The term they use. That's exactly the term. They have never heard another one. That's the only one.
00:32:28
Speaker 17: Shoot up, whatever the term may be, that's it. I don't seen them use the same needle. It really don't serve a purpose.
00:32:36
Speaker 3: Oh wow, Okay, so he's saying that the free needles are insignificant. These guys keep using the same needle over and over, which makes sense. You know, if you're shooting drugs in your body, you're not really concerned about what germs might be on that needle.
00:32:49
Speaker 16: On Wednesday, teams of local and federal agents storm MacArthur Park, arresting those allegedly trafficking fentanyl and math. Officials saying that Eighteenth Street Gang and Sinelo, a drug cartel, are also tied to the illegal narcotics sales operations.
00:33:03
Speaker 18: Yesterday, twenty one arrest we're made.
00:33:04
Speaker 3: This is Jim McDonald. This is the police chief. There's a new chief in town and he's not going to put up with this crap At MacArthur Park.
00:33:11
Speaker 18: Yesterday, twenty one arrest were made. There's still seven people outstanding. Nineteen kilos of fentanyl with sees. That's enough to kill one hundred and ninety thousand people street value on that's about ten million dollars.
00:33:23
Speaker 16: Law enforcement officials also arrested as South LA couple accused of hand delivering drugs, storing and stashing narcotics at businesses by the park. Langer and this property owner John Alley said arresting those involved in the drug trade is just part of the solution. They say the mayor and council leader for this district or part of the problem.
00:33:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with them. I agree with.
00:33:44
Speaker 16: Them and want them to stop programs at hand out needles in Narcan.
00:33:48
Speaker 12: The councilwoman should be advocating first and foremost. This is the most dangerous area of her district. She doesn't come around here.
00:33:57
Speaker 3: Yeah, she should, and she should be here. That's right, That's exactly right. He's a very smart man and makes a great sandwich. So thing wrong with that guy. We're live on KFI AM six forty. This is KFI.
