Seven

Sean and Brendan revisit Se7en (1995), David Fincher's relentlessly dark crime thriller that follows two detectives hunting a killer whose crimes are inspired by the seven deadly sins. They explore the film's oppressive atmosphere, meticulous direction, and compelling performances from Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey, examining how each character brings a different perspective to the darkness surrounding them. We dive into the psychology of Somerset, Mills, and John Doe, the film's memorable dialogue, and Fincher's remarkable restraint in depicting violence—often allowing suggestion, reaction, and imagination to be more disturbing than anything shown on screen. Along the way, they discuss the filmmaking choices that create the movie's unforgettable sense of dread and, of course, the devastating final act that cemented Se7en in cinematic history. Thirty years later, it remains a masterclass in atmosphere, tension, and the unsettling power of what a filmmaker chooses not to show.
